A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN project aimed at supporting underprivileged learners is set to make a significant impact at Makukhanye Primary School in Jeffreys Bay through donations of essential school supplies and motivational sessions designed to inspire young people
The Colour Your Calling initiative, led by project manager, Nikita Magwanya, addresses the critical challenges faced by learners in under-resourced public primary schools, where many children lack basic stationery supplies and struggle with low morale due to limited exposure to positive role models
She said that the project is designed to meet both the material and emotional needs of young learners
"Many learners in public schools face challenges such as a lack of school supplies, low morale, and limited exposure to positive role models, especially ones they can relate to or who come from similar backgrounds We seek to bridge that gap by offering practical support and emotional encouragement," said Magwanya
She said that at the launch on 7 November at Makukhanye Primary, the comprehensive initiative will provide 280 backpacks to learners identified as being in need, along with 1,260 exercise books and supplies of pens, pencils, erasers and rulers
Magwanya said that the project targets approximately 550 to 600 learners in grades 1 to 3 and 700 to 800 children in grades 4 to 7
Beyond material support, she said that the project will feature motivational sessions delivered by community leaders and role models
At the launch, police officer, Anita Mula, will speak on the topic "discipline builds your future," sharing how discipline and education helped her become an officer Faith leader, Trinos Moyo, will deliver a speech on "wisdom is strength," while a former learner will share their journey with the message "I was once where you are "
A school teacher is also set to address the learners on the day
"This project is more than just a donation; it is an investment in the next generation, fostering ambition and a stronger foundation for lifelong child development and discipline," said Magwanya

She said that for children from low-income families, even basic school items can be unaffordable, leading to decreased participation, low self-esteem and poor academic performance
"Quality education is a fundamental right for every child, yet many learners in public primary schools face significant barriers that hinder their academic growth and personal development," said Magwanya
"By donating stationery and organising motivational activities, the project addresses immediate material needs and nurtures long-term educational aspirations "
To manage resource constraints, Magwanya said that they have partnered with local businesses and organisations, including the JBay Recycling Project, where recycling materials are gathered in exchange for stationery
She further said that they plan to purchase stationery in bulk to reduce the
costs and engage with the community to encourage additional donations
Magwanya said that the project emphasises community involvement and aims to create a supportive learning environment that encourages children to stay in school, value education, and believe in a brighter future
She said that the success of the project will be measured not only by the distri-
bution of materials but also by ensuring every learner feels seen, heard and valued
"We want every child to leave highly encouraged, motivated to continue their good work, and inspired by the message that education is their stepping stone to opportunity," said Magwanya
She said that stationery donations can be dropped off at the Victory 4 All centre in Tokyo Sexwale

THE annual National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer event held on 27 September proved to be another resounding success, with 74 mall venues across the country raising a remarkable R2 million for Cupcakes of Hope
At Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay, the local event sold out all available cupcakes, continuing the venue's impressive track record since joining the initiative in 2012
Janelle Stokker, Coordinator for the Fountains Mall event, said that they cannot give out financial figures for individual events, for safety and security reasons, but she could share that they sold out every cupcake and had nothing left by the end of the day
She said that the Jeffreys Bay venue sold approximately 1,200 cupcakes during the day, with 20 Cupcake Angels participating in the baking, decorating and day-of assistance
with organisers offering private support to visitors who become emotional after losing family members or friends to cancer
Stokker said that some of the highlights of the event are meeting someone, especially a child, who has beaten cancer
She said that the funds raised will continue Cupcakes of Hope's vital work supporting families of children diagnosed with cancer
"Funds raised go to assisting patients and their families with daily expenses, which include, amongst other things, nutritional supplements, medical equipment, prosthetics, travel costs, and care packages in the paediatric oncology wards," said Stokker
Furthermore, she said that local families in Kouga have directly benefited from this support, which includes both financial and emotional support

"Public response was wonderful, with many folks who had diarised the event after reading about it in the Kouga Express and on social media Some people came back for seconds and thirds," said Stokker
She said that they have had approximately the same number of cupcakes available every year
However, since they have several people interested in baking and decorating for next year's event, they expect to have an even larger collection available in 2026
"Thanks to the amazing support from Kouga residents, we have sold out every year," said Stokker
She further explained that there's always a bittersweet aspect to the event,
"For many of the families, it is not just the financial support that they received but also the emotional support that helped carry them through the difficult times Even when the worst happens and they lose a child, they are still positive about the support they received from Cupcakes of Hope," said Stokker
Looking ahead, she said that they would love to host a bigger event next year and they are also looking into holding a smaller event during the Christmas holidays, which is in the process of being finalised
Stokker said that those interested in hosting a similar event at their workplace, school or church to help raise awareness and funds for Cupcakes of Hope can contact her at 083 983 7296

FROM bacon, feta and avo to ham and pineapple or peri peri chicken and peppadews, pizza toppings are getting a gourmet glow-up the world over, fuelled by global flavours, inventive ingredients and a hunger for adventure
Forget basic tomato paste and mozzarella; today's toppings take cues from every corner of the culinary map
In Seoul, South Korea, wood-fired pizzerias are layering Korean BBQ beef with spicy kimchi, creating a sweet 'n' sour heat that transforms each bite
Over in London, you might find butter chicken pizzas with cooling drizzles of mint yogurt, while Tokyo chefs are experimenting with miso-roasted mushrooms that deliver deep, savoury umami bites
"Pizza is a passport now," said Chef Lila Santoro of Pizzalab, a London pop-up known for its global fusion pies "Every topping tells a story about culture, comfort, and curiosity "
The plant-based revolution has also reached the pizza oven, and it's anything but bland
Forget the rubbery soy cheese of the past; new dairy-free options like cashew mozzarella and almond ricotta melt beautifully and taste rich
Meanwhile, jackfruit 'pulled pork', marinated in smoky barbecue sauce, is stealing the spotlight from traditional meat
Pair that with charred broccolini, lemon zest or a handful of roasted chickpeas, and vegan pizza suddenly feels gourmet and not like a compromise
Luxury isn't just for tasting menus anymore
Upscale pizzerias are infusing comfort food with fine-dining flair
Picture prosciutto topped with truffle honey, black garlic paired with creamy burrata, or even a whisper of caviar over crème fraiche for those special-occasion slices These ingredients turn pizza into an experience - indulgent, tactile, and entirely unforgettable
peaches, mascarpone and a drizzle of balsamic glaze
Some chefs are even daring to blend chocolate with chili flakes, proving that pizza can flirt with the unexpected and still be utterly delicious
Pizza has always been democratic, endlessly adaptable and universally loved, but now, it's also become a reflection of how we eat today: adventurous, conscious and creative Whether you crave spice, sustainability or sheer decadence, there's a topping for every palate So the next time you pick up a slice, don't just think of cheese and pepperoni
Think of possibility
Here are three fabulously different pizzas for you to make at home

inside to heat Roll or stretch the pizza dough on parchment paper to your preferred thickness Spread over a thin layer of passata/tomato paste Dot the mozzarella around, then add the bacon Arrange fig quarters on top Transfer to the baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling Remove from the oven then top with a handful of fresh rocket and a drizzle of olive oil
Optional variations:
• Add a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat
• Use prosciutto instead of bacon for a more delicate saltiness
Add 1 small red onion, thinly sliced (for sweetness)
• Drizzle over balsamic glaze instead of olive oil
SpicyMangoChickenPizza
Ingredients
• 1 pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
• ½ cup spicy chili-garlic tomato sauce
1 cup cooked chicken breast,shredded
• ½ fresh mango thinly sliced
• ½ red onion thinly sliced
1 small jalapeño,thinly sliced (optional for heat)
• 1 cup mozzarella cheese,shredded
• ¼ cup crumbled feta
• Handful of fresh coriander
Lime wedges for serving
Method
Preheat oven to 220°C Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface and place it on a baking sheet or stone Spread the sauce evenly over the dough Top with shredded chicken, mango slices, red onion, jalapeño, and both cheeses Bake for 10–12 minutes, until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly Garnish with fresh coriander and a squeeze of lime before serving

Method
Shred the jackfruit slightly with your fingers or a fork to give it a pulled-pork texture
In a pan, heat a little olive oil over medium heat
Add the jackfruit, half the smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder Sauté 5–6 minutes until lightly browned
Stir in the BBQ sauce and simmer for another 5–10 minutes until thick and sticky Set aside
"It's about balance," said New York chef Diego Ramos "A drizzle of truffle oil can be magical, as long as you let the crust and sauce still shine "
Even seaweed flakes, once reserved for ramen, are finding their way onto pizzas, adding a briny, mineral-rich crunch It's a movement that's as much about ethics as flavour
Every topping reflects a growing respect for what's local, seasonal, and sustainable
Dessert pizzas are also no longer an afterthought; they're a trend of their own
Imagine a crisp crust smeared with fig jam, scattered with blue cheese and candied walnuts; or a summer special topped with roasted
Fig and bacon pizza.
