The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has issued an urgent appeal to all vessels and members of the maritime community operating between Cape Town and Langebaan to remain vigilant and report any sightings that may assist in the ongoing search for a missing man
David van der Merwe, a 48-year-old local resident, was last seen in the water offshore of Melkbosstrand on the late afternoon of Wednesday 2 April His last-known position is believed to be somewhere between Koeberg and Grotto Bay
An extensive, coordinated search operation was launched immediately following reports that Van der Merwe was in distress NSRI Melkbosstrand responded swiftly to the call, joined by Big Bay Surf Lifesaving (BBSL), Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue squad drone unit, the police, an Aerios Global Aviation (AGA) helicopter dispatched by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and West Coast coast watchers Despite thorough efforts stretching late into the night - continuing past midnight - no trace of Van der Merwe had yet been found
OPERATION
The operation has since expanded to involve additional support from NSRI stations in Table Bay, Yzerfontein and Mykonos as well as Police Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), Police Sea Borderline Control, law enforcement and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) Telkom Maritime Radio Services has issued an “All Ships Alert” to increase awareness and vigilance among vessels passing
through the region
“We are urging all boaters, fishermen and vessels operating along this stretch of the coast to keep a sharp lookout,” said an NSRI spokesperson “Any sightings, however insignificant they may seem, could be vital to the investigation ” A beachgoer who witnessed the incident described the scene as “chaotic and deeply
distressing” “We saw a figure bobbing in the surf, further out than most swimmers go,” recalled Marinda Fourie, who was walking her dog along the beachfront “He seemed to be trying to keep his head above water, then we lost sight of him ” Yet she was unsure whether it was the same man
The NSRI had not given up hope and said all relevant authorities remain on high alert The public was urged to report any information that may assist in locating Van der Merwe by contacting the MRCC or their nearest NSRI station
Further updates will be provided as new information became available, the NSRI said

. We are facing a sexual violence crisis, and we cannot
be silent
We are constantly reminded how much of a dark, sick and crazy world we live in, particularly in South Africa It has taken the global social media community a matter of days to do something that should have been done months ago by calling for #JusticeForCweCwe
For those unfamiliar with the case, CweCwe is a seven-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and sodomised at her school in the Eastern Cape in October last year, with her parents battling to get some form of justice for her since
With calls using the hashtag on social media from countries like Jamaica, United States of America (USA), Canada, Germany and the likes, it has taken global attention to make this horrific incident trend
With yet another tragic reminder of South Africa's deep-rooted crisis of sexual violence, her case has also reminded us again about how unsafe women and children are in this country at the hands of men Men took great offence to the "Men are trash" movement years ago, but the small sense of doubt about their safety is something most women have when in the presence of men We cannot trust men and we need to walk with some caution around them So, the perception that men are approaching us (women and children) with ill-intention is engrained
The saddest part is that the most recent cases, including the father who had allegedly raped his infant because
"he wanted to give her something to cry about" is another reminder that even those meant to protect us can be the very ones we need to watch out for
Despite immediate reporting by her mother, who is a police officer, there has been little to no progress in the investigation So, many people have failed this little girl The school, the driver, the police, the justice system, even to an extent the parent who did not trust her instincts
Public outrage has been immense, with protests and a petition gathering more than 600 000 signatures demanding accountability Why must it always take public pressure for authorities to act? The system is clearly broken What we need to see in this movement is about more than just #JusticeForCwecwe
Children and women across the country are suffering in silence The same silence CweCwe and her family had endured for six months as so many have tried to silence them
We are facing a devastating crisis of sexual violence, with some of the highest rates of rape and gender-based violence (GBV) in the world
Statistics paint a grim picture: thousands of rape cases are reported annually, yet conviction rate remains alarmingly low
In many instances, survivors are met with victim-blaming attitudes from law enforcement, medical professionals, and even their communities
Delays in investigations, mishandling of evidence, and the intimidation of survivors further discourage victims from seeking justice There is a deep-rooted cultural problem that normalises violence against women and children
While we can refer to the cases reported, there are still many that go unreported due to fear, stigma, or a lack of faith in the system, reinforcing a cycle of abuse At some point we feel we have heard it all I am sick to my stomach We cannot be silent - SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS

Pensioner slams fixed City budget, tariffs
What an absurd excuse for another yearly budget
The fixed tariffs are nothing else than a way of robbing property owners It was never there when we first sign up for municipality rendering services In fact, we paid a deposit to Eskom of R3 500 to supply electricity and was changed to the City as an inbetween supplier in about 1996
So where are our deposits plus interest today since Eskom is not our residence supplier anymore?
Did we as property owners sign an "agreement" or a binding contract?
No, we just apply for municipal service rendered as far as I can remember for water, electricity and refuse removal
We bought our property for R132 000 in 1990 and
after 30 years' inflation, the property’s financial value can't be more then R500 000 - commonsence
As pensioners now our original salaries are cut in half and there is a zero yearly or inflation increase So where will it all end? Sell the property and join the squatter settlements to just stay alive?
The real fact is we (all property owners) subsidise the growing squatter townships, illegal immigrents, the high salaries council and more
I think the budget does not reflect a real valuation of living cost today, but just steamrolls a yearly tradition to increase, increase and more
I'm tired of the political game nonsence to milk the geeses who lay the eggs JJ, Brackenfell
