Eerder as om te bly wag vir die departemente van gesondheid en openbare werke om die terrein in George Holmesstraat, aan die agterkant van die Nasionale Hospitaal, netjies te maak, het lede van die publiek en lede van die VF Plus self ingespring.
BloemNuus het op 17 April berig oor die asbes en mediese afval wat op die terrein lê en het self besoeke aan die perseel gebring. Die geboue wat vroeër deur die departement gesondheid opgerig is met die doel om pasiënte te huisves, maar nooit gebruik is nie en intussen verval het, is afgebreek. Die asbes waarmee die strukture gebou is, moet steeds verwyder word.
Christiaan Lombard van die VF Plus sê die spuitnaalde en ander mediese afval wat in April op die terrein was, is intussen verwyder.
Die raadslede het toe verlede week die gras gesny en die rommel op die terrein opgetel. Die Mangaung-metro het die bome op die terrein gesnoei. Inwoners kla al jare lank oor dié stuk onversorgte terrein, wat by tye vir misdadige aktiwiteite gebruik word. Raadslede, en selfs wetgewerlede, het al die probleme hier onder die aandag van die LUR vir gesondheid gebring.

An urgent investigation must be done into the repeated water outages in Brandfort.
According to DA councillor Marieta Visser, the DA in Masilonyana will write to Saki Mokoena, MEC of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), to investigate the municipality and implement consequence management.

Ná verskeie vergaderings sonder optrede het Van Niekerk die saak aan die provinsiale wetgewer gerig, waar ingryping gesoek word van die LUR vir gesondheid en die LUR vir openbare werke en infrastruktuur.

“During our recent oversight visit to the Brandfort treatment plant, we found that the pump at station B has been removed for repairs, halting purification. Although workers attempted to clean the water with newly delivered chemicals, the reserve supply is empty,” she said.
Visser said when this new pipeline was handed over to the municipality in 2017, it was fully functional, with state-of-the-art components, including telemetry. Workers must travel 30km up and down to operate the equipment manually.

Bloem Show fire burning still

The successful staging of the 2025 Bloem Show culminated with notable attendance of both patrons and exhibitors, despite it running for one day shorter than last year.
The event was held from 25 April to 3 May.
This was the fourth Bloem Show after the Covid-19 pandemic, which had resulted in the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 instalments. These cancellations were due to global safety measures to prevent the spreading of the virus, which negatively impacted the socioeconomy.
Elmarie Prinsloo, chief executive officer (CEO) of Bloem Show, attributed the slight drop this year to unfriendly weather conditions, but mentions success in the fact that it was another crime-free event.
“The show faced some weather-related challenges, including rain before the opening and a cold front during the final days. Thunderstorms caused a temporary halt in activities once, but overall, the event was blessed with pleasant autumn weather. Throughout, the safety of all visitors remained a top priority.
“With three public holidays and a full school holiday week during the event, we welcomed 106 706 visitors, a notable increase of 6 000 from the last comparable event in 2019, despite a shorter nine-day duration due to the preceding
Easter weekend. Although slightly lower than the 2024 edition, which spanned ten days, this year’s attendance still reflects strong public support during challenging economic times.”
The 2024 Bloem Show set the highest record of 126 427 visitors this reportedly was the highest since 2012 and post Covid-19.
Prinsloo added notable increases include 345 exhibitors and 60 food stalls.
The Creative Crafts and Arts section received 2 711 entries, more than last year’s 2 342, making it “the largest of its kind in South Africa”.
“The significant participation from schools and children highlighted the community's pride and creative spirit,” said Prinsloo.
Agricultural products remain the mainstay of Bloem Show, with a record 408 dairy product entries received from across the country.
The agricultural programme featured 22 championship events with 5 759 animals –horses, cattle, sheep and goats – participating.
“The event, once again, confirmed its status as one of central South Africa’s premier shows, contributing significantly to the economic vitality of Bloemfontein and the Free State. Positive feedback was abundant, especially regarding the variety, quality and addition of new exhibitions.”
Work to prepare and ensure the 2026 show’s success is underway. Bloem Show will next year be held from 23 April to 2 May.
Investigation into fraudulence forges ahead

The case of the alleged defrauding of the Moqhaka Local Municipality involving former Free State MECs and two prominent officials is set to continue in the Free State High Court in August. It will continue with the accused being former MEC Motshidisi Agnes Koloi and Vusimuzi Rajuili, following the acquittal of Serake Jakob Leeuw, former executive mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
The case has been probed by the Free State Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit.
WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, has confirmed the withdrawal of charges against Leeuw.
She said Koloi and Rajuili had reappeared in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on 7 April, with the matter being postponed to 25 and 26 August for plea and trial.
The case pertains to the alleged defrauding
of the ANC-governed Moqhaka Municipality of R150 000, purportedly during Koloi’s tenure as the executive mayor, in 2017.
Koloi's resignation follows her indictment along with Leeuw and Rajuili, who is the chief director for the Human Settlement Programme.
The Hawks’ findings suggest they worked in cahoots to take more than R150 000 under the pretext that it would be used for a sound system during a Nelson Mandela memorial lecture.
However, the event reportedly never took place, despite money being paid.
The accused face charges of fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Municipal Management Act.
Rajuili and Koloi have since been released from police custody after each was granted bail of R10 000, with strict conditions that they must not contact state witnesses, directly or indirectly.
They must also not interfere with the investigation.

Plaaslike ondernemings het erkenning gekry tydens die Tinteltong-eerbewyse wat op 6 Mei in Bloemfontnein aangebied is.
Die eerbewyse het saamgeval met die stigting van die AfriForum Sakenetwerk in die stad. Uit die nominasies wat vanjaar ontvang is, is vier Bloemfonteinse ondernemings met Tinteltong-eerbewyse beloon.
In 2025 is daar spesifiek gefokus op plaaslike ondernemings in hul onderskeie gemeenskappe en die verskil wat hulle dáár maak.
Blom Online van Charné Swanepoel is vereer vir sy uitstekende diens in Afrikaans.
Emje Vorster se onderneming
Emhouse Plaasprodukte is vir sy uitstekende bydra tot die Afrikaanse gemeenskap vereer.
Nog ’n plaaslike onderneming wat vereer is vir sy kreatiewe naam, is Liedjiesbos vir sy kreatiewe Afrikaanse naam.
Die vierde wenner van die plaaslike TintelTong-eerbewyse was Joany Brink met haar onderneming ’n Brink of Touch Candle Company vir die kreatiewe Afrikaanse slagspreuk (“ruik dit”) vir sy reeks kerse met Afrikaanse name.

toekennings uitgedeel het en dat ons só gegroei het dat ons hierdie jaar altesaam 32 eerbewyse aan Afrikaanse ondernemings gaan oorhandig.
“Boonop word dié glansgeleentheide nou ook by AfriForum se plaaslike sakenetwerke aangebied, waar daar eens net een nasionale geleentheid was,” sê Van der Walt.
Marisa Kruger, voorsitter van AfriForum se plaaslike sakenetwerk in Bloemfontein, sê die groep bied ’n tuiste vir Afrikaanssprekende sakelui met gedeelde waardes.
“Dit is op gesellighede soos hierdie dat bande gebou word en ons mekaar kan ondersteun," sê Van der Walt.
Saam met die gasspreker op die Tinteltong-eerbewysgeselligheid Lizette Volkwyn (middel), is Joalene Uys (links) en Sharlien Wentzel. Die doel van hierdie toekennings is ook om ander ondernemings te motiveer om besigheid in hul hartstaal te doen.
Tuiste vir seniors vier sy inwoners se vele gelukkige, goue jare met vriende

’n Heerlike kuier onder die koeltebome, prettige speletjies en ’n spitbraai-ete is sommige van die bederfies wat gereël is vir die 25ste bestaansjaarvieringe van die Gratias-aftreeoord in Dan Pienaar.
Inwoners en genooide gaste het op 7 Mei by die klubhuis byeengekom.
Prof. Fief van der Merwe, destyds die wyksraadslid van Dan Pienaar, was nou betrokke by die ontstaan van die oord. Destyds was die terrein ’n gruisgroef waar die Vrystaat-veteranemotorklub byeenkomste gehou het. Van der
Merwe, wat ook die viering bygewoon het, het destyds volgehou dit is die ideale terrein vir ’n aftree-oord, wat toe wel verwesenlik is. Vandag het Gratias ongeveer 70 inwoners. Die drie oudste manne in die oord is Charles du Preez, Bennie van der Walt en Wikus Marais, wat almal 87 jaar oud is.
Sommige inwoners bly al langer as 20 jaar in Gratias en geniet die mooi omgewing teen die koppie in Genl Hertzogstraat.
Oom Johan Botes (79) was een van die eerste inwoners van Gratias. Hy het destyds ’n pragtige bonsaiversameling gehad wat hy deesdae by ’n ander perseel versorg.
Van die speletjies wat die inwoners op die verjaardagvieringe gespeel het, sluit in lepelloop met gekookte eiers en diereresies.
Hulle is op ’n spitbraai-ete trakteer, en inwoners van die onderskeie vier strate het verskeie bykosse verskaf.
Ronel du Preez, ook ’n inwoner, het kunswerke spesiaal vir die viering gemaak. ’n Yskasmagneet met een van haar kunswerke op is aan elke inwoner as geskenk ter herdenking van die dag uitgedeel.
Daan Potgieter, voorsitter van die trustees, het op die geleentheid gesê dit is heerlik om almal byeen te hê vir die viering.
Elders given the home they deserve

The oldest resident of the Reënboog Old Age Home, and also the oldest resident in Heidedal, Ouma Katie Adriaanse, turns 100 next month.
She received a warm blanket from police members of the Heidedal Police Station, close to this municipal Old Age Home.
Stakeholders including the police, the Angel Foundation, Mr Central South Africa, and the Mangaung Metro, attended the launch of the 67 Days to Mandela Day – Light up the Future campaign at the retirement home on Monday, 12 May.
Angelique Kemp of the Angel Foundation at the event said the date had been chosen specifically so that the next 67 days would be spent on upgrading the old age home and the grounds.
The project is scheduled to conclude on Mandela Day, 18 July.
The first phase has already started, with trees being pruned and grass being cut.
On Monday, Ntombi Nhlapo, member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Human Settlements, along with the aforementioned stakeholders, started work on a vegetable garden at the back of the premises.
Kemp says the project as a whole entailed many facets, like fixing the gate, fixing the cracks inside the living units, and tending to the many water problems within the units.
“One of the biggest concerns is for the old people’s safety. There is no gate that keeps intruders out, and the residents are permanently at risk. There have been break-ins and we constantly fear for their safety.
“Tata Nelson Mandela believed in a rainbow nation. Let us fix this old age home and fix this rainbow,” she urges.
“These residents are supposed to be living in a sanctuary, but recently it has become a place where evil breathes.
“We urge the police to be visible here at the home to check on their neighbours.”
The home is just a stone’s throw from
the Heidedal Police Station, and right next to the Mangaung 10111 Centre.
“I believe a society is judged by how they treat their elderly. This should be a place of dignity, comfort and care.
“Let us work together to make the Reënboog Old Age Home a sanctuary again.”
Nhlapo said the Mangaung Metro knows that there is a lot that needs to be done at the municipal old age homes.
“We lack the capacity and decided to outsource work that needs to be done there.”
She says the municipality will attend to problems like the water leakages.

Jannie du Toit bied sedert die Covid-19-pandemie gereeld konserte aan om geld in te samel vir mense met gestremdhede.
Op 30 Mei bied Du Toit in samwerking met talle Bloemfonteinse musici 'n konsert aan om die Jean Webber-huis en die Vrystaatse Vereniging vir mense met getremdhede (APD-Vrystaat) te ondersteun. Jean Webber is al meer as 40 jaar 'n toevlugsoord vir individue met ernstige gestremdhede. Die huis dien as veilige hawe en bevorder die waardigheid en help hulle om so selfversorgend moontlik te
wees. Inwoners sluit mense in wat kwadrupleë is, beroerte-oorlewendes en individue met serebrale gestremdheid, veelvuldige sklerose en mense met ernstige gestremdhede in.
Du Toit sê hy hoop om 'n bydra te lewer en die verliese uit te wis wat sedert die pandemie gely is en om Loslitdag weer so vinnig moontlik terug te kry by die groot insamelingsveldtog wat dit voor 2020 was.
Du Toit gaan saam met Anton Esterhuyse, wat die land aan die praat gehad het met sy 100 liedjies vir 100 jaar in 100 dae-projek, 'n besonderse vertoning hou. Ander kunstenaars sluit in Ella Kotze, wat al saam met Du Toit op die verhoog was. Daar is ook Martinette Spoelstra, die tjellis Kornelia

Fees binnekort in Rosestad

Die Vrystaat Kunstefees wat van 15 tot 19 Julie in Bloemfontein plaasvind, verwelkom weer vanjaar die visionêre talent van Nico Scheepers.
Hy is nie net regisseur en skrywer van talle produksies op die fees nie, maar gaan ook 'n werksessie vir jong talentvolles aanbied.
Scheepers sê dit is vir hom lekker om by die fees in Bloemfontein betrokke te wees.
“Ek is baie lief vir die Vrystaat Kunstefees. My produksies Amper, Vrystaat en Nêrens, Noord-Kaap het hier gedebuteer. Die kampus het van die beste teaters in die land.
“Ek sien uit om teater te kan maak en is trots dat dit nie net in ons taal oorleef nie, maar floreer. Dit word noodgedwonge aan die lewe gehou deur ’n tipe van ’n kollektiewe onderbewussyn - asof Afrikaanssprekendes in hulle murg weet dít is waar ons taal se voorbestaan natgelei moet word. Dit is die grootste eer.”
Hy behartig die regie van die toneelstuk Seun. Dit handel oor die memoir van die skrywer Dana Snyman. Die produksie met akteur Wilhelm van der Walt wys niemand is alleen in hul vrees en verwarring oor ander mense se gedrag nie.
'n Gesprek oor die boek, Seun, vind ook vanjaar by die Litfees plaas. Elsabé Zietsman sal met Snyman in gesprek wees.
Die tweede produksie waarby Scheepers betrokke is as regisseur, is Speelgoed van Glas. Dit handel oor die weerloosheid en die feilbaar-
heid van ’n familie wat verken word in ’n tydlose, klassieke verhoogstuk.
Hy bied ook ’n skrywerskursus, Die Skrywer se Pen - skep jou eerste toneel, op die fees aan. Hy gee leiding oor hoe dialoog, visuele vertelling en karakterdinamika ’n boeiende rolprent skep.
Michael Garbett, feesdirekteur, sê dit is ’n eer om Scheepers by die fees betrokke te hê.

Runner aims even higher

The World Athletics Championship beckons for Free State 400m track runner Mthi Mthimkulu.
This comes with him qualifying as a member of the South African team to compete in this year's championships, to be held in Tokyo from 13 to 21 September.
Mthimkulu was a key member of both the men's and mixed 4 x 400m relay teams which competed in the World Athletics Relay in Guangzhou, China, held on Saturday and Sunday, 10 and 11 May. In the men's 4 x 400m relay on Saturday, Mthimkulu and his teammates Udeme Okon, Lythe Pillay, and Zakithi Nene won their heat in 3:00.00.
This was the fastest time in the world this year and the fastest qualifiers.
Mthimkulu followed on his sterling form by participating in the mixed relay, where the team finished fifth.
His selection by the governing federation, Athletics South Africa (ASA), for the just-ended showpiece in China and qualifying for another global event in Tokyo followed his continued drastic improvement.
This was a continuation of his performance on home front, in the ASA Grand Prix International Championship.
Mthimkhulu, a student at the University of the State (UFS), won the 400m race with a personal best (PB) of 45.76 seconds at the ASA Grand Prix tournament.
Currently ranked among the top six in South Africa, Mthimkulu will be among the more than 2 000 competitors from some 200 countries to showcase their talent at the forthcoming spectacle in Tokyo.
"The relay world championships have really been a great experience;
I really enjoyed the travelling and interacting with my teammates," said Mthimkulu.
The lanky runner from Virginia is not new to fierce international competition, having previously competed in 2022 at the junior world championships in Colombia.
He has dominated the Free State Champions in the 400m since he began competing in the U16 and U19 categories.
Mthimkulu's rapid rise is toward realisation of his dream to compete globally. While competing as a junior, Mthimkhulu had said: “But I am going to do my absolute best. I want to improve in every race that I start.”
In 2022, Mthimkulu attained the best time in the 400m (47.48) at the Athletics Free State Championships, with 20.94 in the 200m at a league meeting, and 10.68 in the 100m.

Die Hoër Meisieskool Oranje se o.15A-tennisspan het vir ’n vierde keer uit ses jaar die Amanda Coetzer-toernooi gewen en is sodoende die nie-amptelike Suid-Afrikaanse kampioen. Hy het Affies op Saterdag 10 Mei met 8 – 2 in die eindstryd van die o.15-afdeling geklop.
Die span se ander seges was oor die Rhenish Girls’ High (10 – 2), Hoërskool Waterkloof (12 –0), Hoërskool Menlopark (12 – 0) en Paarl Girls’ High (8 – 2, halfeindstryd).
Inge Ferreira en Yana Olivier was die beste o.15-dubbelspaar. Yana was ook die beste nr.3-speler (o.15) en het die eerbewys vir die beste sportmanskap ontvang.
Mieke le Roux was die beste nr.2-speler (o.15) en Mariaana Spamer die beste nr.4-speler (o.15).
Oranje se o.19A’s het ’n trotse rekord voortgesit deur in elk van die 26 Amanda Coetzer-toernooie in die top drie te eindig. Dié span het Paarl Girls’ 12 – 0 om die derde plek geklop. Donna le Roux was die beste nr.1-speler (o.19); Lika Claassens die beste nr.4-speler (o.19); Zané Volskenck die beste nr.6-speler (o.19) en Ameli Bezuidenhout die beste nr.7-speler (o.19).
