JEANINE Lewis’s life was forever changed on 18 August 2024 when a horrific collision on Main Road, Walmer, between 10th and 11th Avenue, claimed the life of her son, Aden, and left her with catastrophic injuries
“My 12-year-old son, Aden, was killed instantly on the scene,” Lewis recounted “I was rushed to hospital by ambulance, not realising that my real battle was only beginning,” she wrote in a letter to the mayor
The crash left the heartbroken mom with a collapsed lung, surgical emphysema, a fractured pelvis and a broken hand
However, the full extent of her injuries only became apparent days later, as she has since been diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury (Level 2), Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Now medically boarded and registered as disabled, Lewis has spent months in and out of the hospital, from January to July 2025, with ongoing treatment
Despite writing to authorities, pleading for traffic calming measures following her son’s death in August last year, Lewis says numerous accidents have continued to occur on the same dangerous stretch of road
In a follow-up letter dated 8 October, this time to Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe, she described witnessing another serious collision that morning

they are necessary,” she stated
Despite losing her child, her health, her career and her sense of safety, Lewis refuses to remain silent
“Every day is a struggle physically, mentally and emotionally
But my greatest pain is knowing my child’s death could have been prevented,” she shared
“This is not just about my son It’s about every mother, father and child who travels that road daily not knowing that one night, one reckless driver, could destroy everything ” Lewis is calling on authorities to take immediate action before another family suffers the same devastating loss
“No one deserves to go through what I am living with every day Aden’s life must not be forgotten - his death must mean change ”
In response to the heartfelt letter and request for road safety measures, the Executive Mayor instructed the Traffic and Road Safety Department to implement road safety measures
“I am deeply saddened by the serious accident on Main Road, Walmer, and extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected family,” Lobishe commented
“Two vehicles collided, and one even rolled over It’s heartbreaking and deeply frustrating to see the same tragedy repeat itself whilst our pleas for intervention are ignored ”
Sadly, for the mom who lives in Walmer and commutes along the same road daily, it is forever a reminder of her son’s tragic death and the need for road safety measures
“How many more accidents need to happen before something changes?” she asked Lewis argues that traffic lights alone are insufficient and calls for the installation of speed humps, traffic circles and working streetlights to slow reckless drivers
In her correspondence, Lewis
pointed to the National Road Traffic Act and the Municipal Systems Act, which place a duty on local authorities to ensure road safety and take reasonable measures to protect the public from foreseeable harm
“This road has become a proven danger, and urgent traffic-calming measures are no longer optional
“Road safety is a top priority, and I have directed our Traffic and Road Safety Department to urgently implement traffic-calming measures, including speed humps and traffic circles to prevent further incidents ”
She also urged motorists to drive responsibly
“We are reviewing all safety data along this route and will take every possible step to protect our residents I urge all motorists to drive responsibly and report dangerous conditions ”

SINCE 2018, a staggering 57 attorneys have been disbarred for professional misconduct, with some stealing between R1 5 million and R5 million from their clients, according to Fidelity Fund reports
“These abuses erode faith in the legal system,” the Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund (LPFF) said in a statement
“We are raising awareness publicly, transparently and community by community ”
The LPFF is a statutory body established under the Legal Practice Act, with the mandate to protect
South Africans from financial loss due to attorney theft or dishonesty
In order to restore public confidence in South Africa’s legal profession, the LPFF is launching a community outreach programme
The initiative will be unveiled at an Imbizo-style engagement on Saturday, 25 October from 10:00 to 12:00, at the Sizakele Konzi Community Hall on Jabavu Street in KwaNobuhle
The event is expected to bring together representatives from the Legal Practice Council (LPC) and affected communities to address the crisis of trust in the legal system
In an interview with PE Express, LPFF Chief Executive Officer Mot-
latsi Molefe shared practical steps vulnerable communities can take to protect themselves from unscrupulous legal practitioners
“The public must ask to see the following and take these steps to confirm the status of a practitioner,” Molefe explained
“The lawyer must have a Fidelity Fund Certificate, which is issued by the LPC every year The public has a right to see this certificate, and they may confirm with the Legal Practice Council regarding a practitioner’s registration ”
The weekend event will mark the beginning of a national awareness campaign designed to educate the public on how to report dishonest
attorneys and claim compensation when money or property is stolen
The event will equip members of the public with essential knowledge, such as how to verify a legal practitioner’s status online
“The public may check the FFC status of a practitioner on the LPC and FFC websites A direct call to the provincial LPC will also yield favourable results,” Molefe shared
For anyone who suspects they have been victims of attorney misconduct, Molefe advises the public to contact the LPC in circumstances where they suspect that their money has been abused by practitioners “so that the LPC may confirm this and take disciplinary ac-
tion if necessary
“The public may also approach the LPFF in the same circumstances, and action may be taken between the two organisations through working together ” Molefe added that the LPFF is taking a multi-pronged approach to address these systemic issues
“The LPFF is working to manage the risk of the Fund through inspections of trust accounts held by practitioners in their law firms, and training in conjunction with the LPC on trust accounts and the Legal Practice Act,” Molefe revealed

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has successfully restored its telephone services after weeks of disruption caused by an outstanding R9 million telecommunications debt that left residents unable to access essential municipal services
The telecommunications crisis had severely impacted the municipality's
operations, with residents unable to contact ward councillor offices, log service requests or reach any municipal office via landline
The situation prompted urgent intervention demands from opposition councillors, who called upon the Acting City Manager to resolve the mounting debt crisis During the blackout period, the municipality's
inability to maintain basic communication infrastructure highlighted the ongoing financial challenges facing the Eastern Cape municipality
The R9 million debt had accumulated over an extended period, ultimately resulting in service providers cutting telecommunications access to municipal facilities
Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe
has now encouraged Nelson Mandela Bay residents to resume using municipal services by contacting the NMBM Call Centre on 0800 20 50 50
The restored call centre provides support for residents requiring assistance with various municipal matters
"Residents can utilise the call centre for a wide range of services," the municipality stated, outlining that the facility handles account queries, water and sanitation issues, electricity matters, vandalism reports and other service delivery-related concerns
WOMEN across South Africa united in support of a single goal on Saturday: to raise funds and awareness for early detection screenings of breast cancer in disadvantaged communities
Whilst 1,850 women gathered at 18 secret locations across the country, 117 local women in Nelson Mandela Bay participated in an early morning dip on Saturday, 11 October
The registration cost was R200 per person, with proceeds going towards pre-screening for cancer in underprivileged communities Marguerite Smit, from Awehness Travel, who organised the event in conjunction
with ILoveBoobies, explained the initiative’s background
“The ILoveBoobies organisation has been hosting the swim, which first started on a beach in Cape Town eight years ago,” she said “This year, they were trying to reach women across South Africa to take a dip or swim at a secret location at the same time ”
At the women-only event, mothers, daughters and grandmothers could share their stories in a supportive environment
“Some get very excited and remove their tops, so that they can feel free and in a safe space with other women to share the trauma they have been through Whether they

The centre also provides information about various municipal departments to ensure residents can access the appropriate services efficiently

have lost someone to cancer or are currently fighting cancer, it was an amazing experience The women showed strong community support,” Smit added
The location of the swim remained secret until the night before the event to ensure privacy and safety
“We had an amazing crew of water support, which included Coast-
al Water Rescue, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Kings Beach Lifesaving Club We hope to have more participants next year,” she concluded

"EVERYONE deserves a chance to heal" is a motto Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) Revive adheres to in their mission to make health and wellness accessible to every individual regardless of socio-economic circumstances
The NPO provides free wellness screenings, trauma support and emotional resilience workshops to underprivileged communities in Gqeberha and surrounding areas
With an active need for mental health support in schools and communities, the NPO is on a mission to reach more schools, corporate offices and communities during Mental Health Awareness Month this October
Revive, formerly known as Lifeline SA, a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in Gqeberha has been serving the community since March 1977
Director of the NPO, Astrid Thomas, shared how the organisation has evolved since it opened its doors to the community "We have been around for many years and our focus is mental health " In 2014, the NPO rebranded to Revive – Empowering Emotional Change – to better address the evolving emotional wellness needs of Nelson Mandela Bay
"The name change marked a shift from reactive crisis intervention to proactive emotional wellness and psychoeducational outreach," Thomas shared "Revive now focuses on grassroots-level support, aiming to prevent social ills such as domestic violence and substance abuse before they escalate " Their outreach programmes include trauma and resilience workshops at schools, supportive parenting programmes and awareness programmes aimed at preventing substance abuse, gender-based violence and suicide
"Post-COVID, Revive saw a surge in counselling requests due to increased psychosocial distress," Thomas shared "The pandemic highlighted the importance of mental health support in homes, schools and workplaces, reinforcing the need for accessible emotional wellness services "
Revive provides no-fee counselling services for individuals and community members (both in-person and virtual sessions), no-fee community awareness programmes, no-fee emotional wellness workshops and no-fee psychoeducational programmes
According to Thomas, schools are actively reaching out to Revive for support "This demonstrates a strong interest from schools in building emotional support systems and partnering with Revive to address mental health challenges among learners," she commented
"Revive works with schools to address urgent emotional needs and is training teachers as lay counsellors to act as 'emotional paramedics' This initiative strengthens emotional support structures within schools "
To provide free support to schools and communities, however, fundraising and financial support are vital
"Unfortunately, local business support is limited While Revive offers comprehensive and affordable Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP), many companies prefer working with larger national providers who then subcontract Revive to deliver services locally," she shared "This indirect engagement means Revive receives minimal direct support from local businesses, despite offering full Occupational Health and Wellness services "
How can local businesses and individuals support Revive?
Use Revive's EAP services to support employee wellness
• Make financial donations and receive a Section 18A tax certificate
• Sponsor a beneficiary and receive an SED certificate (Revive is Level 1 B-BBEE)
• Join the MySchool programme and list Revive as a beneficiary

THE South African racing public will definitely take note of the winner of Friday's feature race at the Fairview track in Greenbushes
The main event is the R200,000 Racehorse Owners Association Stakes for three-year-old horses over 1600m, annually a special race on the Eastern Cape calendar
Many previous winners, and also some who only managed to run a place in the race, went on to achieve even bigger things on the international and national scene
Racing purists will have many wonderful stories to tell when they look at some of the famous names who performed well in this race
The list of names includes former Durban July winners Bold Silvano and Big City Life, and others like Lizard’s Desire, Paris Perfect, and Global Drummer Racing fans will be eager to see who will join that list with a big performance on Friday It should be a fantastic race
It is certainly a race to look forward to, but the tongues are already wagging about the Eastern Cape's biggest race of the year coming up on the 31st
The R350,000 Algoa Cup race will then be run over 2000m, and there is huge interest in this event
Three Western Cape trainers - Justin Snaith, Glen Kotzen and André Nel - have nominated horses to run in the Eastern Cape’s most prestigious race
The Western Cape visitors have been dominating this race in the modern era Firealley’s victory last year was only the second time in the last 20 years that an Eastern Cape horse has won the Algoa Cup
Snaith (4 entries), Kotzen and Nel (2 each) have nominated eight horses to try to regain the Western Cape’s dominance of the Algoa Cup
Master Redoute (Nel) and Holding Thumbs (Kotzen) are the highest-rated horses amongst these entries
There are 23 entries in total
Among the Fairview stables, Alan Greeff leads the nominations with six entries, which include the Eastern Cape reigning Horse of the Season, My Best Shot, and the province’s Champion Stayer, Bournemouth
Gavin Smith and Sharon Kotzen have nominated two horses each, while Jacques Strydom, Juan Nel, Tara Laing, Cliffie Miller and Emmanuel Kaknis have all entered one horse
Last year's winner, Firealley, is Strydom’s entry Strydom also won the race in 2009 with Surfin’ USA, the last Eastern Cape horse to win before Firealley broke the drought last year
For local racing fans, the upcoming feature races are mouthwatering events, but we have already seen a remarkable achievement this month at Fairview
This past Friday, Mercantour became the first locally-trained horse to win all three legs of the Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Poly Challenge The Cape Town horse, King Regent, broke the ice last season
Mercantour, trained by Greeff and ridden by Richard Fourie, had no problems winning the final leg of the Challenge over 1600m He also won over 1200m in August and over 1400m last month
By winning the Triple Crown, Mercantour secured a bonus of a cool R250,000 for his connections!

“Initially, I was approached by Nkuli Solwazi, who is one of PE Express newspaper’s readers in Motherwell, who read the article about the financial challenges my son faced
“Solwazi told me that she had mobilised 500 PE Express readers in Gqeberha and seven readers in Cape Town so that they could contribute funds to make Uhuru’s trip possible Ndyebo Secondary School, a teacher, NPS Butchery, a local business, Collocotts Tyres, and a certain orange farmer in Addo contributed immensely to helping my son PE Express coverage drew the attention of donors to my son I was optimistic that my son would secure funds I did not give up, and my patience paid off ”
