THE Equleni Garden Project in NU29, Motherwell, is transforming urban agriculture in Nelson Mandela Bay. Recently visited by Councillor Bassie Kamana, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, along with Deputy Director for Urban Agriculture, Passmore Dongi, the project stands as a beacon of community-driven success and sustainability.

Founded in 2023 by Monalisa Nomathamsanqa Badi, the garden has become a vital source of sustenance and community support.

Badi, who leads the initiative, explained, “I sell the crops to my local community, which allows me to feed my family and support a crèche with a soup kitchen, as well as elderly residents and my church, where I serve as a pastor. With support from the Directorate, I am now able to change many lives. I also plan to expand to a nursery in the near future.”

Municipal spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, said the project has garnered support from the municipality, as highlighted during the recent visit.

"This is one of the projects we support under EDTA," said MMC Kamana. "Our goal is to empower individuals who want to pursue farming as a livelihood, helping them generate their own income. We encourage more residents to start similar

initiatives, as this will ensure long-term food security in our communities."

Supported by the Integrated Settlement and Urban Planning (ISUP) Grant, in

partnership with Human Settlements, the garden is equipped with seeds, wheelbarrows, watering cans, and other essential resources. Any surplus produce is sold at

the Fresh Produce Market, contributing to the local economy.

Dongi emphasised, “Food security is critical and has the potential to create more job opportunities in the future. We will continue to identify and support more projects.”

Soyaya said the municipality's commitment to such initiatives not only addresses immediate food needs but also builds sustainable community development.

"The Equleni Garden Project is a testament to the successful collaboration between local government and community members, paving the way for economic empowerment and social cohesion," he added.

Badi's vision to expand her efforts into a nursery is a demonstration of the project's potential to transform urban agriculture into a thriving sector within the local economy.

By nurturing community-driven projects, Nelson Mandela Bay is on a path towards resilience and self-sufficiency, driven by a collaborative spirit, Soyaya commented.

He concluded that the project highlights the importance of empowering communities through sustainable agricultural practices, reinforcing the role of local initiatives in fostering economic growth.

With continued support, projects like Equleni Garden can lead to lasting change, providing hope and resources to communities in need.

THREE security guards at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha narrowly escaped injury during a daring robbery recently.

The incident, involving three armed men, occurred just before 01:00 on Sunday, March 16.

Eastern Cape Department of Health Director of Communications, Siyanda Manana, confirmed that the assailants entered through the hospital's main entrance, opposite Shoprite.

They targeted the female security guards in the guard house, stealing personal and company mobile phones.

"They pointed them with guns and took their personal phones and the company cell phone," Manana said, adding that no staff or patients were harmed.

This robbery marks the latest in a concerning trend of attacks on healthcare facilities in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. Manana condemned the assaults, stressing that they undermine both healthcare access and safety.

"Healthcare facilities must be protected at all costs because such incidents trample on our people's rights to healthcare and safety at our institutions," he emphasised.

To support those affected, Manana said

the Department would provide psychosocial assistance to the guards.

He further noted a similar attack had occurred at the same institution last year, highlighting persistent security issues.

SAPS spokesperson Captain André Beetge reported that the armed suspects approached the guards at approximately 00:35, demanding their phones before fleeing on foot. SAPS Gelvandale has opened a case of armed robbery and is actively investigating.

The police urged the public to assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

"We implore everyone who might have seen or heard anything about the incident to please contact the police," Beetge urged.

The Department of Health plans to collaborate closely with law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.

"We will work hand in glove with law enforcement to bring the culprits responsible to book," Manana affirmed.

As investigations proceed, enhancing security at healthcare facilities remains a priority, said Manana.

"The commitment to bolstering safety measures is essential in preventing future incidents and protecting staff and patients.

This robbery serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust security proto-

TO display and encourage community spirit and generosity, the Joy Group, led by Henry Fourie, recently embarked on a mission to transform the living conditions of those less fortunate.

Their latest project, renovating a small single room, located in the Schauderville community, for a woman in need, has touched the lives of many and serves as an inspiring

reminder of the power of collective action. For Fourie and his team, making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate has always been a priority. "It has always been important for us to make a difference," said Fourie. With this guiding principle, the Joy Group was formed, a collective of like-minded individuals dedicated to community assistance. "We already have a group, and it was not difficult to get all on board as we are like-minded when it comes to assisting the community," he explained.

The project involved a comprehensive renovation of a woman's modest living space. With her permission, the team cleared out her room, repainted it, and installed new cupboards, a new bed, and enhanced electrical fittings. "The lady lives in a small single room, and we decided to make it as comfortable as possible," Fourie said. The endeavour was made possible through the generous contributions of local businesses and community members. Gary Benjamin, a local businessman, provided essential plumbing assistance, while Steel Pipes and Fittings donated supplies for the new bed. Electrical work was expertly handled by Victor Britz, and Herbert Assam constructed the cupboards. Additionally, Cortney Leo, using her contacts, secured most of the food needed for the project.

Despite the challenges posed by their age, Fourie and his group were undeterred in their mission. "Being elderly and doing most of the work ourselves, we found it challenging, but at the end, we felt fulfilled," he reflected. This sentiment of fulfilment is echoed in the transformative impact the renovation is likely to have on the beneficiary’s life.

When asked about how it felt to have her home chosen for renovation, the recipient, Michelle Valentine, described her feelings as "completely overwhelmed." Among the changes she is most looking forward to are "having a stove and having a bed and bed-

ding for winter."

The renovation process also brought unexpected moments as she vacated her home for three nights to allow the work to take place. Despite any initial disruption, the outcome has been life changing. "What I received totally free today will change my mindset to an attitude of giving and appreciating," she said, her gratitude evident. As she reflected on the support she received, her emotions ran high. "My emotions were over the top, and no words can express how I feel," she said, capturing the profound impact of the Joy Group’s efforts.

Beyond physical improvements, the renovation was aimed at having a ripple effect within the wider community. "We hope that our actions will inspire others to get involved in improving the living conditions of the less fortunate," Fourie said. By demonstrating the potential of community collab-

oration, the Joy Group hopes to encourage others to follow suit.

Looking ahead, Fourie envisions continuing their work with the aid of established businesses. "With donations from established businesses, we can do so much more," he affirmed. This ambitious outlook aligns with the Joy Group’s mission to extend its reach and support even more individuals in need.

"Through the dedication of individuals like our members, and the generosity of numerous supporters, the Joy Group has not only transformed a living space but has also reignited a sense of community and compassion. I'm incredibly proud of their work, as it stands as a testament to the difference that can be made when people unite for a common cause, demonstrating that even small acts of kindness can lead to meaningful change." Fourie concluded.

The reciepient of the newly renovated home, Michelle Valentine (in white pants), could not hold back her tears as she was comforted by Bonita Meintjies, a member of the Joy Travellers Club.

IT can be concluded that although winter is still a few months away, it's definitely making a soft launch, and with the Gqeberha wind, some days are colder than others.

This is why South Africans have been rallying together with knitting needles and crochet hooks for a heartwarming cause.

As the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement marks 11 years of spreading joy, a dazzling blanket installation recently adorned Nelson Mandela University on March 20. This vibrant display celebrated the United Nations International Day of Happiness, showcasing unity, compassion, and creativity.

The centrepiece for this year's installation was a cheerful yellow smiley emoji with sparkling blue eyes and a red smile, set against a backdrop of warm hues - reds, oranges, blues, purples, and pinks. Surrounding this enormous blanket was an array of colourful creations handcrafted by the KnitWits from across the nation.

This giant tapestry of happiness inspired and delighted many. Twenty-five percent of these donated blankets will remain in Gqeberha, providing warmth to those in need within the Eastern Cape.

KnitWits contributed handmade blankets in various colours and patterns, weaving warmth and joy into this artful project. Bridget van Oerle from The BUZ Hive, said, “We are excited to be at the heart of this powerful initiative, which not only honours Madiba's legacy but also

offers a meaningful lesson in social responsibility and generosity. Our province has significant needs as winter approaches, and with blankets donated staying in the Eastern Cape, we hope this effort will bring warmth to both bodies and hearts.”

Gqeberha Ambassadors were central to these efforts, working tirelessly to collect and distribute blankets.

Their dedication honours Madiba's legacy in the most compassionate way.

“Initiatives like this remind us of the extraordinary impact of kindness, creativity, and collective action,” added Van Oerle.

Founded in 2013 by Carolyn Steyn, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day started as a simple challenge from Zelda la Grange, Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant, to make 67 blankets to honour Mandela Day.

Over the years, it has grown into a global movement, crafting a legacy of compassion one stitch at a time.

Reflecting on the event, Steyn expressed, “After COVID-19 delays, we are thrilled to finally bring this joyful initiative to Gqeberha, under the perfect banner of happiness and unity. The ethos of 67 Blankets has always been about spreading warmth and uplifting communities, and it’s wonderful to see this spirit being embraced by Nelson Mandela University.”

As South Africans came together to craft this symbol of unity and warmth, the legacy of 67 Blankets continues to unite communities, proving the power of compassion and creativity in making a tangible difference, Van Oerle said.

GqeberhagathersforDrBabalwaMaholwana’smemoirlaunch

"BEYOND inspiring, my mission is to empower," are the words Dr Babalwa Maholwana lives by. It is no surprise then, that

despite the freezing cold and rainy weather outside, warmth and wisdom filled the Nelson Mandela Business School on Thursday,

March 13.

The launch of Dr Babalwa Maholwana's memoir, The After 40 Dilemma, was a rivet-

ing evening hosted in partnership with the Black Management Forum (BMF).

The event connected book enthusiasts, business leaders, and young professionals in a discussion rich with insight and personal reflection.

BMF NMB Chairperson, Siyabulela Jodwana, opened the evening by highlighting the importance of strategic leadership for black professionals.

"Strategic positions are held by black professionals, but the gates are still closed. We are saying to young professionals, occupy those spaces and be active in a meaningful way," Jodwana urged.

Maholwana's memoir resonated deeply with attendees, especially through an all-women panel discussion exploring corporate leadership, motherhood, and personal development.

The panel focused on the challenge women face in prioritising themselves amid demanding careers and family responsibilities.

Human Capital Specialist, Zola Ngoma, shared insights on maintaining balance, saying, "Balancing your everyday life means giving your most energy to what is important and making that choice every day."

Reflecting on her memoir, Dr Maholwana said, "As women, we have been conditioned to give endlessly - to our careers, our families, and our relationships. But the biggest lesson I have learned is that you cannot pour from an empty cup. The After 40 Dilemma is about reclaiming yourself, your voice, and your power - without guilt."

The After-40 Dilemma is the real-life story of one woman's transition into her 40s; her fierce race against her biological clock while navigating a melting pot of blended family parenting, adult learning, and multiple mental health crises.

Babalwa (fondly known as Dr Babs) is a qualified medical doctor and mother of one who is at the peak of an enviable executive career in pharmaceuticals.

A whirlwind romance in her early 40s challenges most of her assumptions and choices about getting married, having more children, studying further, and living her purpose.

The evening unfolded with panelists, Zola Ngoma, Clinical Psychologist, Ziyanda Arose-Dlulane, and Nomhle "Chinese" Tys, Public Sector Lead for Metrofile, sharing

aimed at not only inspiring, but empowering through her own journey.

personal stories of resilience, leadership, and self-discovery, echoing the book's core message: women can and should prioritise their own well-being while succeeding in their professional and personal lives.

The event celebrated professionals and leaders who embody authenticity, set boundaries, and embrace empowerment.

The After 40 Dilemma serves as both a memoir and a guide for navigating personal growth, leadership, and self-care in the modern world.

A copy of The After-40 Dilemma costs R280 and is available for purchase through Amazon.

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

THE global welfare organisation, International WeLoveU, led by Chairwoman Giljah Zahng, recently held a blood donation campaign at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Donor Centre in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The event attracted 21 volunteers, including WeLoveU members, their families, and local residents from the Gqeberha area, all united in the mission to share the gift of life.

The campaign began at 10:00 on Sunday, March 16 as volunteers gathered at the SANBS Donor Centre and systematically went through the necessary pre-donation procedures.

Of the participants, 13 were deemed suitable and donated a collective 5850ml of healthy blood over two hours. SANBS commended WeLoveU for organising the event and supported the process by providing snacks for donors.

Unathi Xuba, a WeLoveU member, expressed her feelings after donating. "I heard that one person's blood donation can save up to three lives. This touched my heart because I can share life with others through this donation."

Fellow member, Lutho Jonas, added, "I will gladly do this again to save three more lives," expressing his commitment to the cause.

The initiative is part of WeLoveU's 'Worldwide Blood Donation One, Two Movement', a global campaign that began in Korea in 2004 and has been ongoing for over 20 years.

According to Willem Pretorius, the local assistant branch leader, it aims to create a ripple effect in blood donation, starting with one person and spreading exponentially to engage people worldwide.

This movement aligns with the World

Health Organization's (WHO) goal of achieving 100% voluntary, unpaid blood donation globally.

Globally, in 64 countries, 117 000 people have participated in the Blood Donation Campaign, with 52 000 donating blood.

This remarkable effort is estimated to have saved 156 000 lives as of 2024, showcasing the profound impact of WeLoveU's initiatives, Pretorius proudly added.

In addition to blood donations, WeLoveU actively participates in various altruistic efforts.

In February, they provided food packages to 64 households affected by a fire in Dunoon, Cape Town, and have previously supported disaster victims in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

Pretorius said, "Our commitment extends to community clean-up initiatives under the ‘Global Clean World Movement,’ aiming to enhance environmental awareness and combat climate change. "WeLoveU's actions are making a real difference. They embody a commitment to community welfare and show how collective efforts can lead to meaningful change."

International WeLoveU, an NGO affiliated with the United Nations Department of Public Information, boasts 155 000 members in 79 countries.

Its members have undertaken 4500 social contribution activities in areas such as environmental conservation, emergency relief and poverty alleviation. Their efforts have earned them prestigious accolades, including the Order of Merit from the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

"WeLoveU's activities continue to receive support globally as they contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), striving for a hopeful future for humanity and the planet," Pretorius concluded.

DreamDanceProjectpromotesinclusivity

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

NELSON Mandela Bay has become the focal point for an inspiring initiative, the Dream Dance Project 2025, aimed at making dance accessible to individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities.

This innovative endeavour, launched on Wednesday, March 19, at The Athenaeum, marries the performing arts with healthcare, demonstrating a profound commitment to inclusivity.

Spearheaded by a passionate leadership team, including Michel Maling, Cathy Ballinger, and Donna Mey-de Lange, the project seeks to provide safe and inclusive dance opportunities. The core objectives are clear: offer access, deliver education, ensure sustainability, and provide a platform for performance. Dance classes are tailored to cater to diverse needs, creating an environment where individuals with disabilities can thrive. "Our goal is to break barriers and showcase the talents of those often overlooked," said Mey-de Lange, reflecting the project's spirit.

WhatsetstheDreamDanceProjectapartis its integration of medical professionals into the dance environment. Physiotherapists (Marelize Opperman and Marlene Stander), Occupational Therapist (Clair Mopp), and Biokineticist (Cara Cannon), are crucial to the initiative.

They train dance teachers to ensure safe and personalised dance instruction, prioritising the physical and emotional well-being of participants. The collaboration extends beyond the dance floor. Local organisations like Dance Dynamic and the Nicki Ray Academy have joined forces with the project, contributing resources and expertise.

"Community support is vital, showcasing a unified effort to foster inclusivity in the arts. With the backing of local stakeholders, we’re building something sustainable," Mey-

de Lange emphasised.

Participants will enjoy classes adapted to their unique needs, focusing on personal growth and enjoyment.

By pairing each participant with a trained dancer, the project ensures individual attention and support. The long-term aim is not only personal enrichment but also the potential for professional opportunities in the performing arts.

The Dream Dance Project offers more than just classes; it creates platforms for performance. By doing so, it raises awareness of disability inclusivity and celebrates the talents within this community.

"Seeing these individuals perform and thrive is a testament to the power of collectiveactionandcreativity,"remarkedMey-de Lange.

The project is supported not just by its leadership and medical team, but by a broad network of local organisations and volunteers. Together, they create a vibrant tapestry of support and innovation. This collective effort highlights the community's dedication to fostering equality and breaking stereotypes. "We encourage others to join us in this journey, ensuring dance is accessible to all, regardless of ability," said Mey-de Lange, calling for continued collaboration and support.

Withitssightssetonthefuture, theDream Dance Project 2025 is aimed at addressing a critical gap in opportunities for individuals with disabilities, representing a commitment to social change through arts and culture.

"We want our legacy to be one of empowerment, where the joy of dance becomes a unifying force, bringing about societal change and personal growth. Through this initiative, Nelson Mandela Bay is paving the way for inclusivity, proving that empathy and creativity can lead to transformative outcomes," Mey-de Lange concluded.
