Hulle sou op Maandag 30 Junie saam met sers Nzima Adoons (42) in die hof verskyn, maar hul name is nooit in die hof aangeteken nie
Mojalefa Senokoatsane van die Vrystaat-kantoor van die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag het Dinsdag op ’ n navraag van BloemNuus bevestig die vyf mans se name het nooit op die hofrol verskyn nie omdat daar geen verbintenis tussen hulle en die misdaad gevind kon word nie

The long arm of the law has seemingly caught up with a Bloemfontein attorney, culminating in her appearance in the Bloemfontein Regional Court
The attorney Elmarie Prinsloo (47) is facing serious criminal charges of fraud, theft, money laundering, as well as contravention of the Attorneys Act
Prinsloo is expected to reappear in the same court on Thursday, 17 July, following her first appearance on 26 June
Her appearance followed an investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Bloemfontein She was served with summons on 11 June, following the elite crime fighting state agency ' s completion of its investigation regarding fraud and money laundering allegations
Prinsloo is accused of swindling a client of about R3,4 million and contravening the Attorneys Act The swindled cash is reportedly part of a victim’s estate
WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the charges pertained to fraud and money laundering allegedly committed from January 2015 to July 2017
“The suspect was entrusted with the complainant’s estate, which she received in the form of about R6 million in cash
“This amount was supposed to be held in a trust account on behalf of the complainant, but it was kept in the suspect's personal account
This resulted in the complainant losing about R3,4 million,” said Matoti
The charge of contravention of the Legal Practice Act relates to practicing without a Fidelity Fund Certificate (FFC), which is binding for all attorneys in the profession The Hawks uncovered this during the investigation
The Legal Practice Council (LPC) issues an FFC to practitioners annually – this is a mandatory licence for legal practitioners in South Africa who handle client funds
The document is a guarantee that the practitioner is authorised to manage trust accounts and protects the public from potential losses due to theft or misappropriation of these funds
It also ensures practitioners can handle client funds and property responsibly
Prinsloo joins the growing list of Free State attorneys accused of unethical practices, eroding the public’s trust in the legal profession Just this year from January to May, according to the LPC website, three practitioners were disbarred: Kabelo Matee, Nozipho Cokisa Dlali and Sharon de Lange Those suspended are: Matshediso Caroline Tladi, Hermanus Johannes Kleynhans, Johan Gerardus van Es, Lourens van Wyk and Daniël Johannes de Wet
About 15 practitioners in the Free State have been disbarred, while the number of suspended candidates with pending cases is about 35 The LPC is investigating candidates under suspension This number of suspended and disbarred practitioners refers to September 2022 to May this year

Snails are part of the process of a unique art exhibition that can be viewed at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein during the Vrystaat Arts Festival from 15 to 19 July
Sonya Rademeyer, as well as volunteers, have been working on the solo exhibition What Remains Through Time, Slowness and Stillness, which can be visited in the Reservoir at Oliewenhuis The exhibition is a collection of different, but in some ways related, installations
“It is a layered exhibition and we collaborated not only with the community, but also live snails The exhibition explores the notion of historical erosion and cultural erasure due to early colonisation through traces created by more-than-human-kin,” she explains

Precision surgery by robotic system

A new journey has begun at the Mediclinic Bloemfontein with the introduction of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System as the first of its kind in private practice in central South Africa
The first sacrocolpopexy (a surgical procedure used to treat pelvic organ prolapse) was performed by Dr Do-Jo Jordaan, gynaecologist, on 8 June She was followed by Dr Jos Myburgh, urologist, who performed the first radical prostatectomy (a surgical procedure where all or part of the prostate gland is removed) on 14 June, with the robotic surgery system
International medical literature firmly establishes robotic-assisted surgery as the gold standard for prostatectomies, with both patients and surgeons favouring this approach
Carol Defty, the hospital’s general manager, said at the launch of the da Vinci system on 24 June that the use of this kind of technology was without doubt the future of healthcare
“With Mediclinic Bloemfontein providing healthcare to patients from across the central region, including the Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Lesotho, this is an important addition to our services,” Defty said Jordaan, having already performed nine surgeries by the time of the launch, said the benefit of the system was multi-faceted
“The enhanced 3D vision into the
pelvis, where you work in a narrow, closed space, makes precise work possible
“The patients experience less pain, and recovery is much quicker”
She said in eight of the nine cases the patients lost less than a teaspoon of blood during the operation
Dr Carl Streicher, general and bariatric surgeon, performed his first right hemicolectomy (a procedure to remove either the right or left side of the colon or large intestine) and abdominoperineal resection (a procedure where the anus, rectum, and part of the sigmoid colon are removed
to treat rectal or anal cancer); and Dr Francois Kruger, general surgeon, his first right hemicolectomy and low anterior resection (a procedure to remove a portion of the rectum, typically for rectal cancer, and reconnect the remaining rectum to the colon)
Dr Rachel Moore, chief medical officer (CMO) at Mediclinic Southern Africa, confirms this is one of three da Vinci robotic surgical systems that was implemented across the group in South Africa The other three are in Mediclinic Vergelegen, Mediclinic Kloof and Mediclinic Durbanville Other surgeons in Bloemfontein

Urologists Dr Aubrey Coetzer and Dr Willem Dahms will be trained and accredited in the next few months
Each surgeon practises with the simulator for up to 40 or 50 hours before they start operating with a proctor Only after the intensive training is concluded, are surgeons allowed to use the da Vinci system

countries, including France, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Germany The opportunities that the system hold are endless, including operations that can be conducted from outside the theatre and even from elsewhere in the world
Defty has confirmed that all surgery with the da Vinci system is not yet covered by medical aid, but this is sure to change
