NELSON Mandela Bay has witnessed an alarming escalation in kidnappings targeting business owners in recent years, with a particularly troubling pattern emerging against entrepreneurs of foreign descent
This disturbing trend has contributed to the metro being identified as the most problematic district in the Eastern Cape, according to SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, as revealed in the second and third quarter crime statistics released on March 12, 2025 This analysis examines the scope of the problem, the factors contributing to business owners becoming targets, and the wider implications for community safety and economic development in the Eastern Cape's largest metropolitan area
UD Express spoke to SAPS spokesperson Captain André Beetge, and Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, to obtain relevant information, and they both shared their expertise regarding the matter
According to Beetge, SAPS Sector Managers visit all businesses, including foreign-owned shops in the area of their responsibility, and regularly address safety concerns where a lack of proper security measures is identified "Regular patrols by crime prevention units also include such businesses in their patrol routes, and on the Community Police Forum (CPF) platforms the topic of safety of local businesses is a regular discussion point," he said "All business owners are generally encouraged to join with their local CPF structures to keep being informed of the latest tendencies, as well as receiving safety hints and tips "
Beetge concluded, "Where any person has a reasonable suspicion that they are possibly being targeted, they are invited to report such information to their local police station immediately "
When asked about the Hawks' involvement in kidnapping cases, Mhlakuvana stated that every kidnapping incident involving a ransom demand falls within their mandate, with the Directorate actively investigating all such
instances
He said, "The Hawks have noted the scourge of kidnapping incidents in the province, especially in Gqeberha, where both residents and foreign business people fall victim
“However, although we have noted the rise in kidnapping incidents, the Hawks have made enormous breakthroughs in some of the cases
“There are a number of suspects currently behind bars who are linked to kidnappings "
He added that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation is thoroughly examining all abduction cases, actively pursuing every potential lead to ensure that ground investigators can effectively work towards preventing the significant number of such incidents throughout the province
Regarding intelligence gathering efforts to pre-emptively identify potential kidnapping plots against foreign business owners, the Hawks confirmed they are collaborating closely with all other law enforcement organisations, including Crime Intelligence

THE Rotary Club of Uitenhage South was recently donated more than 15,000 books that were shipped into the country from schools in Texas, United States of America, through the Texas Rotary Club (TRC)
According to The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South President, Clive Hassell, Rotary Clubs in Texas contacted all their schools for their spare books to donate
The TRC collected books that filled a 12-metre container and paid for the shipping and all cost-related expenses to getting the container into the country
This giveaway prompted many Nelson Mandela Bay residents and teachers crowding together when collecting the books at the first public opening at the Uitenhage Airfield Hassell added that, "Upon the arrival of the container, the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South sorted each book and stored them at the Uitenhage Airfield hangar, which was borrowed from and not paid for We are now giving out books to whoever wants one "
Speaking about the project, Hassell said,
"How it started is that we contacted a few local schools that we believed were in dire need of reading material to come and collect books at the Airfield We have had this under the radar and only gave away some books privately to Kariega township schools for the last month and only a few came to collect We then decided to open it up to the public "
"Every child needs to learn how to read," he said "They are not going to go far in life if they do not read Education is one of the most important things that Rotary does Another project we are involved in concerns local crèches in KwaNobuhle, where we have been paying a stipend to a fully trained individual to go into the crèche, once a week for a year, to teach not only the learners, but staff members who have no formal training in running a crèche
“We also founded a project in which we donate R5,000 worth of learning toys and material That is why I believe that education is very important in Rotary the world over "
"I believe we have close to 20,000 books A lot of these books are English learning
books, but we also do have many adult and school library books I estimate about 3,000 adult library books, a couple of thousand school library books, and the rest are mainly primary school and a few high school books for good measure," Hassell said
Ilene Julies, teacher at Nasruddin Islamic Primary School was overjoyed by the initiative
"My principal and staff don't know that I am here We lost our whole library in the June flash flood, so I am here to get as many books as I can to surprise them "
When asked how long he believes this giveaway would last, considering the number of people who were present on day one, "We plan to do this until the hangar is empty," Hassell said
"We hope that in the next couple of weeks, a month tops, we run out of books and as is evident on day one, people are coming out with boxes of books and that is what we want "
• Residents and educators are welcome to collect books at the Uitenhage Airfield on Mondays, from 13:00 until 16:00
THE Despatch Preparatory School recently held a Bullying Awareness Week for its learners; an initiative of the Department of Education
Additionally, according to the school's deputy principal, Asja Strydom, with the recent increase in bullying in the area of Despatch, the school felt it fitting to host the awareness programme Present at the programme was the school's alumnus, Siyabulela Deli, an all-round entertainer widely known for his comedy videos as Ta Fire, born and raised in Despatch He was invited by the school to educate the learners about bullying and why they should not do it Strydom shared, "The initiative started because the Department of Education requested that schools in the area start doing anti-bullying awareness campaigns for their learners, and the school felt
that with the increase in bullying taking place at different schools, we felt it was a good time to start
We wanted to focus on people our learners knew
“They often hear from their teachers about anti-bullying messages, but we decided to look for their local heroes; people that they looked up to Ta Fire being a former pupil of ours, it made it even more special "
She added that children need to learn about bullying at a young age, so that they know the effect it has on others
"The more they are exposed to how this affects their fellow learners, the higher the chances of them being empathetic towards one another "
Speaking to UD Express, Deli said,
"I went to my old school to speak about bullying, because during that week, they were having a programme called the bullying awareness week at school When calling
me, the deputy principal said that they were looking for an old learner who was influential to come and speak to the learners, and I made myself available If my words could help one learner, that would mean a lot to me "
Deli said that though he was not a victim of bullying himself, he added, "Maybe I was but was not aware of it at the time For example, in Grade 8, we were called "pots" (newcomers), where we would basically do whatever our seniors told us to do
“I did not identify that as bullying I did however witness people getting bullied and it is not a great sight to see Not everyone can stand up for themselves and it is unfair when someone bigger or stronger than you picks on you for whatever reason This motivated me to go and speak to the learners that come after me, because I don't want them to go through something like that Bullying is very bad "
As this is an important topic that needs to be spoken about more, Deli added that he would be open to going to more schools to share his anti-bullying message with more learners, if time permits
"Growing up, we were not as fortunate to have people constantly reminding us how wrong bullying is and educating us on the outcomes of it, regardless of the type of bullying, whether physical or emotional I would love to create awareness of this, so that we can bring an end to it," he said Jenna Thomas, one of the school's Grade 1 teachers shared, "I believe that the visit from the alumnus was important as he encouraged learners to develop empathy and understanding towards those who have been bullied Learners were also encouraged to be kind and to play their part in being an upstander, rather than a bystander,
against bullying The fact that Ta Fire is a current influencer and attended school at Despatch Preparatory also made the talk very real and relatable " She added, "Our learners always hear from us about how wrong bullying is, but because it came from him, my hope is that they take even more heed and act on the seriousness of preventing bullying "
Thomas wishes that the learners at Despatch Preparatory take concrete action to prevent bullying, by standing up for someone being bullied, reporting incidents, or being kind and inclusive to others "I hope that our learners will be more aware of their actions and words, and more mindful of how they might impact others," she said

A ROUTINE doctor's visit and keen observation of unusually low blood pressure led to the discovery of a life-threatening illness for Gqeberha resident, Zachary Francis.
The 21-year-old Nelson Mandela University student was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, a rare condition which affects an estimated two to seven people per million annually.
From an active and sporty young man who spent his weekends playing rugby, cricket and socialising, Zachary's weekdays are now filled with syringes and trips to the hospital as he navigates the biggest fight of his life
The Bachelor of Education Foundation Phase student is in urgent need of a stem cell match
However, according to DKMS Africa only 0.36% of South Africans are registered as potential stem cell donors, of which 8% are Asian 9% Coloured, and 38% Black.
What does this mean?
The data suggests that patients from the above ethnic groups face a herculean challenge in finding potential life-saving matches.
DKMS Africa Donor Recruiter, Yanelani Mbolompo, explained the medical prognosis and treatment for aplastic anaemia
"The prognosis for individuals with aplastic anaemia can vary significantly, as responses to
treatment differ from person to person. However, with standard treatments, approximately 80% of patients show improvement," he said.
Zachary receives his weekly transfusions at Life Mercantile Hospital, and although he is on a medical aid, it does not cover all his expenses.
"In April, Zachary began treatment with Revolade to stimulate his bone marrow, but unfortunately, as of now, there have not been the expected improvements," Mbolompo shared with PE Express on Monday, June 23.
"In June, Zachary started an immunosuppressive therapy called Atgam, which aims to suppress the immune response that affects bone marrow and assists in its recovery," he added
According to Mbolompo, aplastic anaemia can occur at any age but is more commonly diagnosed in young adults (15-25 years) and older adults (over 60 years).
Unfortunately, none of Zachary's family members are a stem cell match, and according to DKMS Africa around 70 % of patients rely on the kindness of strangers for their survival.
Marlon Francis, Zachary s father, explained: "A sibling could most likely have been a match, but unfortunately he is an only child.
Parents are only up to a 50% (match) but we are not, so he needs a donor from the database."
Although everything seems
bleak, hope remains.
"We are all feeling positive at the moment and praying that we find a donor."
Francis explained how the medical costs for treatments has depleted their medical aid benefits, which is why a fundraising event is planned for July.
"In the last three months he has used close to R400 000 in benefits," said Marlon. "His savings are depleted, and we have to make 20% co-payments for medication and doctor's visits now."
Zachary's diagnosis came as a surprise, as he was always a healthy child and adult, his father added
"Zachary was out on a park run in early February this year," Marlon recalled. "After the run, he felt a bit tired and took his blood pressure, which was very low, and then went to see his doctor who who sent him right to the Mercantile Hospital."
Zachary was admitted to the hospital, where he underwent various blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy, and the diagnosis was confirmed.
"Zachary did not have low blood pressure before, but as the doctor explained, symptoms are very hard to see with aplastic anaemia."
To assist with the medical costs, a fundraising event will take place at the Nelson Mandela
Club on July 26 at the cost of R80.
