By Monday evening, 2 June, the last two of the 16 major leaks that were scheduled to be repaired during the five-day planned water interruption in Kimberley, were attended to.
These were part of the comprehensive Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) programme consisting of 35 projects to be implemented in three phases over approximately eight years. A R2,5 billion grant by the National Treasury was allocated for this.
After the water shutdown on Thursday evening, 29 May, excessive repair work commenced on Friday morning at the water treatment plants at Riverton, as well as on identified major leaks on the approximately 30km of bulk pipelines from Riverton to Kimberley.
On Monday evening it was expected that line filling from Riverton to Kimberley would commence around midnight, with water reaching the reservoirs in Newton approximately four hours later.
However, on Monday at 13:00 the latest update indicated that the pumping of water into the distribution network – from the Newton reservoirs – would be delayed due to a setback. This setback was experienced at Midstation on the newly installed isolation valve on the 900mm diameter pipeline.
Rikus Rossouw, project leader of engineering firm Bigen Africa, indicated that supply to residents in high-lying areas was likely to take place on Wednesday morning.
According to Thabo Mothibi, spokesperson for the Sol Plaatje Municipality, repair work was executed as scheduled, despite some setbacks.
Farr se sluiting hou ernstige gevolge vir Noord-Kaapse gemeenskappe in, sê Jooste.
Charné Kemp spoke with Annelize Essop, residential social worker and acting project leader at the Bophelo Child and Youth Care Centre in Kimberley.
Bophelo is a non-governmental, non-profit project functioning under the management of the Executive Welfare Council (AFM Welfare).
What inspired the creation of Bophelo, and what is its core mission?
Bophelo is part of the Child Protection Programme. This is a government approved and subsidised programme addressing the need of abandoned, orphaned, neglected, and abused children, as well as children living with disabilities. Its vision and mission is to be a relevant and accessible service to the most vulnerable persons and families.
How do you identify the communities or causes that need your support the most?
In our temporary safe care programme at the baby home at 43 Robinson Street, ten children can be cared for from birth until two years.
The special needs house at 59 Blacking Street can accommodate ten children in residential care from age three to 18 years. Children can only be placed at our homes with legal court orders.
Children at our centre are also from different backgrounds, races, cultures, ethnicities, and religions in the Northern Cape. If space is available, all children to whom our services are relevant, with a court order, are admitted into the programme.
Please share details about your major ongoing projects.
The Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) Centre for Global Change is busy with a project at the centre which will assist in saving on electricity costs.
The collaboration with the university and the centre is ongoing and other depart-
ments are expected to come on board in the future.
Two of the Mr and Miss Diamantveld finalists are busy with a few initiatives to raise much-needed funds and items for the centre.
School winter uniforms and winter clothes are collected for the winter. How is transparency and accountability in managing funds handled?
The management committee consists of volunteers from the community, who are responsible for the management of the centre.
The treasurer who serves on the committee reports on the finances on a quarterly and annual basis at committee meetings and an annual general meeting (AGM). The annual auditing of the finances is done by an independent auditor.
Monthly and quarterly progress reports are also submitted to the AFM Welfare, as well as the Department of Social Development (DSD). What are some of the challenges faced in achieving goals, and how are they overcome?
The centre is challenged by a monthly financial shortfall for running costs and more. These challenges are tackled with the assistance of our dedicated donors from the community, churches, other organisations, companies,
institutions, and schools. How is the impact of your work in the communities measured?
To date, Bophelo has made a difference in the lives of 258 children right across the Northern Cape.
Children were either reunited with families, placed into foster care, other residential facilities or adopted by families in collaboration with external organisations and the DSD. What role does collaboration with other organiations or government bodies play?
Through collaboration with other role players such as child protection organisations, DSD, other government departments, churches and more, Bophelo can provide a holistic service to each child in our care. How are donors engaged and encouraged for longterm support?
The centre has an active Facebook and Instagram page through which we engage with donors.
Members of the community, volunteers, schools, prospective and existing donors, organisations and companies also make scheduled visits to the houses where they spend time with the children and learn more about the project. What is a success story that highlights the difference

It all started with a phone call in early May, informing staff at the McGregor Museum in Kimberley that one of its exhibition pieces had gone missing.
After this alarming call, personnel at the museum engaged in a search for this piece, requesting the help of the public. The missing piece was identified as Private Bob, part of the Regiment Gallery exhibition on the top floor of the museum.
At the McGregor Museum, housing fascinating and unbelievable parts of history, it is not uncommon for strange things to happen.
Private Bob is a soldier without a rank, and although headless, was neatly dressed in uniform.
As the days passed, the mystery of his disappearance deepened as he was seen at different spots in and around Kimberley. Hesitant to confront a headless soldier, the public kept personnel at the museum updated on his movements.
Private Bob was first spotted in the newly opened Slice of Nice coffee shop and deli at the museum in Atlas Street. Unfortunately, on the museum personnel’s arrival there was no sign of him – only a few crumbs on a table and an “IOU” scribbled on a napkin.
Next he was sighted at the Duggan-Cronin Photographic Gallery, close to the McGregor Museum. Again, on arrival of personnel, there was no sign of him except for his visitors book entry.
Days later, he was spotted at the Magersfontein Battlefield Museum, approximately 45km from Kimberley. Maybe he had a longing for a quiet evening with a starlit sky and the lingering sound of a bagpipe?
It seems Private Bob also had a longing for fun, as he was spotted playing billiards at the Rudd House Museum in Belgravia, Kimberley.
But travelling, even without a head it seems, makes one thirsty and he was seen popping in for tea at the Victorian-style Dunluce House, also in Belgravia.
All fun comes to an end, however, and Private Bob is back in his
exhibition, where he belongs. His travels were nothing more than the McGregor Museum’s initiative of taking part in the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) annual International Museum Day, observed on 18 May.
Dominique McAnda, a curator at the museum, says this year’s theme was “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”. With this in mind, they decided to create a new awareness on the McGregor Museum and its satellite museums.
Museums are key contributors to the sustainable development of communities. As trusted institutions and integral threads in a shared social fabric, museums are uniquely placed to foster positive change on a global scale.
In the search for Private Bob, the public had to follow information on the Facebook page McGregor Museum Kimberley. Pictures of his whereabouts were published, and a winner and runner-up were selected through a lucky draw.
McAnda says they were surprised by the positive reaction, and how much people enjoyed it. Some even thought he was really stolen. She was the one who moved Private Bob to the different locations, which was also a lot of fun.
“A beautiful story with a surprise. Kudos to those who initiated the prank,” was one comment on Facebook.
When looking at the video of the phone call on Facebook, where it all started, until the last video where McAnda locked the door to Private Bob’s exhibition case: Museums are indeed a lot of fun.
Bophelo has made?
Our organisation aims to make a difference in each child’s life we care for.
Through the sponsorship of the community and the efforts of the committee and staff members, one of our children attained a Guilds diploma to become a chef. Another completed her Level 4 Early Childhood Development training.
Another one was recently selected for the Northern Cape team to compete at the Toyota South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) Championship in Gqeberha, which took place at the end of March. What plans do you have for the future growth and expansion of initiatives?
The organisation plans to get more community members, churches, schools, and other stakeholders involved in the project to create a sense of community ownership.
The community is encouraged to follow our social media pages to see how they can get involved either as a donor, volunteer, committee member, service provider, and more.

Foto: Helena Barnard

Sy ma is ’n ruk gelede in hegtenis geneem omdat sy
waarskynlik by haar kind se verdwyning betrokke is.
KARIN MULLER
Daar word gesê: “Tyd laat alle wonde genees.”
Hoewel dit nie so eenvoudig is nie, steek daar dalk tog waarheid in.
Probeer staande bly. Fisiek. Emosioneel. Finansieel. Psigies. Sommige dae is moeiliker as ander. Sommige dae is byna
onuithoudbaar.

“But he is an Italian,” was Umberto’s sensible reply. “He doesn’t care if you break some law a little bit, as long as you wear beautiful shoes. Are you wearing beautiful shoes? Are you wearing the shoes I gave you? ... principessa?” I looked down at my ip- ops. “I guess I’m toast.”

Elke tree is ’n uitdaging.
Stof, klippe en selfs vreemde slakke laat my gril.
Net wanneer ek begin skreeu, skrik ek wakker.
Sweet tap van my voorkop af.

Dan sing hulle ou FAK-volksliedjies terwyl iemand viool of kitaar speel. Daar word in waens, of in ’n seiltent daarnaas, geslaap.
Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore accepted the chairpersonship and host of the Northern Cape Mine Managers’ Association (NCMMA) at its annual general meeting held recently. The roles are rotated annually, among member-mines, to ensure diverse leadership and shared responsibility within the association. The NCMMA, established in the early 1960s, serves as a professional body for mine managers in South Africa’s mineral rich Northern Cape region. Its membership includes managers from various commodities, with its primary goals including the promotion of best practices in mining operations, helping the exchange of technical knowledge, and addressing industry-specific challenges unique to the area. Katlego Lebese (photo), mining manager at Kumba Iron Ore and the 2025 chairperson of the NCMMA, expressed a strong commitment to this role. “We are committed to creating platforms for meaningful dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration that will drive lasting, positive change across the Northern Cape mining community.” Photo: Supplied
Dié byeenkoms vind by Platfontein buite Kimberley plaas. Daarvoor benodig hulle ’n borg of geldelike ondersteuning. Diegene wat hulp kan aanbied, kan Gert Eiman by 078 164 2364 bel of ’n e-pos na eimang676@gmail.com stuur. Foto: Verskaf
During Child Protection Week, observed from 29 May to 5 June, the role families play in ensuring the safety and well-being of children is in the spotlight.
A strong family unit fosters a safe environment where children can grow and thrive.
Parents and caregivers play a vital role in teaching children about their rights, setting boundaries, and ensuring they are protected from abuse and neglect.
Ways families can protect their children:
■ Establish a daily check-in routine where children feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. For example, having a “safe space” conversation at dinner where everyone talks about their day without judgment.
■ Teach children about personal boundaries using age-appropriate books or role-playing scenarios. For instance, explaining the concept of “safe touch” and “unsafe touch” and encouraging them to speak up if they feel uncomfortable.
■ Set up parental controls on devi-
ces and monitor online activity to ensure children are engaging with safe content.
■ Create a “gratitude jar” where family members write positive notes to each other. Another way is ensuring children have access to counselling or support groups if they face emotional challenges.
■ Participate in local child protection workshops to learn more about safeguarding children.
Families, schools, and communities must work together to create a culture of protection and advocacy for children’s rights Every child deserves a safe and loving home. By taking proactive steps, families can foster a future where every child feels safe, valued, and empowered.

The 1 000 beneficiaries of the 2025 Avbob Road to Literacy campaign have been announced. This project, in collaboration with Oxford University Press South Africa, is a nationwide trolley library initiative.
It continues to improve access to books in communities across South Africa, with a focus on schools and non-profit organisations (NPOs).
The announcement was made at an event hosted in Sandton, Johannesburg, on 29 May.
The project addresses the ongoing challenges of low literacy and numeracy levels at foundation phase by providing culturally and linguistically relevant materials in all 11 official written languages.
This year’s campaign reflects substantial growth from the 180 library trolleys distributed in its inaugural year, 2022. Each of the 1 000 mobile library
includes 500 books from Oxford University Press SA selected to support literacy and numeracy skills in alignment with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (Caps) curriculum. The total number of books distributed this year will exceed 500 000, up from 250 000 in 2024.
Each trolley library is valued at R57 000, bringing the total investment for the 2025 campaign to R57 million. The trolleys are designed to be mobile, durable, and easy to access in shared or under-resourced learning environments.
This year’s campaign received 8 661 nominations from across all nine provinces, submitted by educators, caregivers, community leaders, and members of the public.
Since 2022, the campaign has evolved into one of the most extensive mobile library programmes in the country.
Educational experts have long advocated for mother tongue instruction at the
early stages of schooling. Research has consistently shown that when children learn to read in their home language, they are more likely to stay in school, perform better academically, and transition successfully to additional languages later in life.
A total of 20 educational institutes in the Northern Cape will benefit from this project.
They are the Bantu Kwantu Renaissance; Vela-Langa Primary School; E.R. Mocwaledi; Pabalelo Primary School; Agape Community Upliftment Projects; Abantwana After-care Centre; Amogelang ECD; Delta Primary School; J.J. Booysen Primary School; J.J. Charné Kemp talked with Micheal Ludick, headmaster of the Kimberley Technical High School (KTHS).
What is the core mission of the school, and how is it implemented?
The KTHS aims to provide holistic education, balancing academics with technical skills, leadership, and cultural enrichment.
As the only technical-focused school in the Northern Cape, we prioritise hands-on learning through the Department of Basic Education’s Three-Stream Model, ensuring learners are placed in pathways suited to their abilities and career goals.
Our curriculum integrates core academics with technical subjects like Mechanical and Electrical Technology, fostering real-world applications. What new projects were launched since your appointment?
Transformative projects were launched to position the KTHS as a leader in technical education, academic excellence, and holistic learner development. Our involvement in the Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) programmes has led to more than eight learners receiving full university bursaries, fostering innovation and environmental responsibility.
Participation in national debating and public speaking competitions were enhanced, helping learners

engage with social justice issues while developing critical thinking and public discourse skills.
Involvement in Maths and Science Olympiads, the National AstroQuiz, and international learning programmes were increased.
Rugby was reintroduced, and hockey, netball, athletics, and soccer helps to promote discipline and teamwork.
Curriculum transformation has been a major focus. Some subjects were phased out, with learners now starting with Mechanical Technology, Civil Technology, Electrical Technology, and Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) from Gr.8. This ensures learners gain practical skills from the outset.
We are introducing new streams in Construction, Electronics, Coding and Robotics, and Computer Applications Technology (CAT) to enhance digital literacy.
What are the biggest challenges at the school?
The misconception that we have shifted away from technical education. We have strengthened and modernised our technical focus, maintaining fully functional workshops that produce learners with top-quality practical skills.
Another misconception is that we only prepare learners for artisan careers. While we take pride in training skilled artisans, our curriculum

Language in 2026, making education more accessible and culturally responsive.
Our learners participate in leadership and civic engagement initiatives, such as My Voice SA and ENKE Trailblazers, fostering ethical leadership and social justice awareness.
also equips learners for professional careers in engineering, science, medicine, law, and commerce by combining Mathematics and Physical Sciences with technical subjects.
Some believe our curriculum is less demanding, but the opposite is true. We set high academic standards, requiring learners to take Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, along with Physical or Technical Sciences. This ensures strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
How is inclusivity and equal opportunities handled?
All learners receive support and empowerment. Once a boys-only institution, we are now proudly co-educational with a near 50/50 gender ratio.
Recognising linguistic diversity, we plan to reintroduce Afrikaans Home

Learners excel in academic and advocacy competitions, ranking among the province’s top Moot Court schools, with learners presenting arguments at the Constitutional Court. Beyond academics, we provide mentorship, learner support, and anti-bullying initiatives to create a safe and nurturing environment. What are some recent achievements or successes?
The KTHS has grown into a powerhouse of academic, technical, cultural, and sporting excellence. At the heart of our success are our outstanding educators – four national teaching awards finalists and Viki Mpompolas, recognised as South Africa’s best secondary school educator and honoured by the African Union.
In 2024, we achieved top academic rankings, including the Northern Cape’s Best EGD School, second place in Technical Sciences and Technical Maths, and the top technical school for Gr.10 to Gr.12 in the Frances Baard District. Our matriculant, Kutlo Motlhoioa, made history as the province’s top student and secured first place in
Mathematics and Electrical Technology.
We won the Heritage Education Schools Outreach Programme and placed second in Moot Court. Learners were placed second in the South African Youth Water Prize for two consecutive years, earning full university bursaries for over eight learners.
Our learners continue to shine in national AstroQuiz, Olympiads, and youth development platforms. How is mental health and well-being prioritised?
Mental health is a key component of academic success and overall well-being. Our School-Based Support Team (SBST) works with educators, social workers, and counsellors to assist learners facing emotional, behavioural, or academic challenges. We partner with the Department of Social Development and wellness organisations to run workshops on bullying, substance abuse, gender-based violence, and stress management. How is innovation incorporated?
Our state-of-the-art Cyberlab focuses on agriculture, mining, renewable energy, and astronomy, providing hands-on, project-based learning in coding, simulations, and data analysis.

In two separate tournaments, the Frances Baard Rugby Region claimed the Griquas Regional Championship titles for both the U21 men’s and women’s team.
On Saturday, 31 May, in Calvinia, the Frances Baard Rugby Region’s U21 men's team achieved a historic feat by winning, back-to-back, the Griquas Regional Championship title for 2025. On 17 May in Kimberley, the Frances Baard women’s team were the winners at the women’s rugby regional tournament.
Demonstrating exceptional skill, unity and resilience, the young athletes secured their victory in a highly competitive tournament.
In their opening match, they defeated the Fears team from the Van Druten Region with a score of 38 – 24. In this match, Stephan du Toit from Frances Baard was announced Man of the Match. Following this, they faced the tournament hosts and favourites, Logan, and tri-
umphed with a 28 – 10 victory. The final was a showcase of dominance against Namakwaland, with Frances Baard winning convincingly (26 – 3) to secure the title.
Head coach Josef Molale – along with assistant coaches Vernon Guss, Lawrence Lemmetjies and Jonathan
Adendorf – played a pivotal role in developing the players’ skills, instilling discipline, and fostering a winning mentality. Their strategic guidance and unwavering commitment were instrumental in navigating the challenges of the tournament and ultimately securing the championship.
Support from the region’s leadership also played a vital role. Chairman Romeo Syfers and secretary Moira Januarie traveled to Calvinia to cheer on the team, demonstrating their commitment to youth development and rugby excellence within the community. Behind the scenes, team
manager Roderique Januarie provided crucial leadership and organisation, ensuring the team remained focused and motivated throughout the tournament.
This victory highlights the emerging talent within the Frances Baard region and marks a milestone in its rugby history, says Syfers.
■ The results of the matches played are: Namaqua 31 – 5 Pixley ka Seme; Frances Baard 38 – 24 Van Druten; Namaqua 25 – 3 ZF Mgcawu; Van Druten 26 – 24 Logan; Pixley ka Seme 10 –18 ZF Mgcawu; Frances Baard 28 – 10 Logan; Van Druten 28 – 20 ZF Mgcawu; and Frances Baard 26 – 3 Namaqua.
The Frances Baard Rugby Region invites local businesses and organisations to support the development of young athletes.
“Your partnership can help nurture talent, promote community development, and sustain the region’s rugby excellence,” says Syfers.

Hiertydens swem deelnemers in ’n dam, pan, of selfs die see.
