At least one of the three suspects accused of killing three men in cold blood in Hawston on Mother’s Day is out on parole.
This came to light on Friday 20 June, when Mzwandile “Zwai” Nyembezi started testifying during his bail application in Hermanus Magistrates’ Court.
The 50-year-old and his alleged accomplices, Tsepo Moahloli (39) and Mfundo Tom (40), appeared in court under heavy police guard for the murders of Uwellin “Pork” Salies, Vittorio Julies and Royston Plaatjies on Sunday 11 May in Linford Street, Hawston. Salies and Julies succumbed to their injuries on the scene, while Plaatjies died in hospital later on.
The court heard Nyembezi had allegedly been the driver of a BMW reportedly hijacked in Eersterivier.
Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape, confirmed the charges against a fourth accused, named “Accused
1” for convenience’s sake, had been withdrawn, leaving only Nyembezi, Moahloli and Tom charged with the triple murder.
The prosecutor indicated the state would oppose the suspects’ bail application due to the seriousness of the crime and the fact that they were accused of Schedule 6 offences, namely murder. Accused 3 (Moahloli) abandoned his bail application.
The prosecutor also informed the court that records indicated Nyembezi was out on parole while Tom, who had a previous conviction for armed robbery, completed his parole last year.
Moahloli and Luthando Ngedezi (35) were arrested at a security complex in Paarl on 28 May, when members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and detectives followed-up information about the whereabouts of suspects believed to have been responsible for the fatal shooting.
Paarl Post reported that Ngedezi and Moahloli abandoned their bail application when they appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Friday 6 June for the possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition. The charges stemmed from the fact that AGU members seized an AK47 rifle and eight rounds of ammunition as well as three 9 mm pistols without serial numbers and various rounds of ammunition during the suspects' arrest on 28 May.
Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie, a provincial police spokesperson, reported that the firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they had been used in the commission of crime. He stated that more charges could be added depending on the outcome of these tests.
Ngedezi and Moahloli’s next appearance for the firearm-related charges is scheduled for 5 August.
The first accused in the murder case made his first appearance in connection with the triple murder in the Hermanus Magistrates' Court on Monday 9 June. He was scheduled to start his bail application
on Wednesday the 18th. On this day he was, however, joined in the dock by another accused and the case was rolled over to the next day (Thursday 19 June) for Tom to be added to the case.
A large contingent of armed AGU officials were stationed inside as well as outside the courtroom while the suspects appeared. In his bail application Nyembezi admitted he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment in 2000 for culpable homicide, 28½ years for robbery and murder in 2002, for which he was on parole, and nine years in 2015 for robbery and illegal possession of a firearm. He indicated he would plead not guilty to the current murder charges.
Nyembezi admitted he made a booking for two nights at an establishment in Her-
manus for his co-accused, with whom he was seen on Saturday 10 May and Sunday. He denied any knowledge of the white BMW’s hijacking in Eersterivier, or that he was asked to clone a number plate to put on the hijacked vehicle, which he denied driving at the crime scene.
Nyembezi said he and his co-accused split up the Sunday after he took them to a shisanyama (restaurant selling meat). He then went to Onrus where he bought water and waited for someone. Afterwards, he said, he went to Zwelihle where he met his co-accused and they went back to the hotel. Nyembezi denied being friends with Salies. He also vehemently denied allegations that the friendship turned sour when he (Nyembezi) wanted to start dealing in drugs and extortion in Hawston.

The contentious debate on farm attacks was taken to Parliament earlier this month when Ian Cameron, in his capacity as the DA’s spokesperson on police, called on the South African Police Service to declare farm attacks and rural violence on both farmers and workers a national policing priority.
“This is not only to protect the food producers of the country,” he said, “but to defend every South African who labours in our agricultural heartlands under constant threat of violence.”
Cameron said while the 12,4% national decrease in murder over the last quarter is welcome, the unrelenting violence that rural communities continue to face cannot be ignored.
The fourth quarter crime statistics included a section titled “attacks on rural communities”.
Under this section the police recorded that between January and March 2025 six murders and 13 attempted murders took place in farming areas, and one rape case was reported.
In this period there were 11 assaults with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH) and 53 robberies with aggravating circumstances also recorded.
“These are often not opportunistic crimes. They are calculated, brutal and often feature torture, rape and execution-style-killings.
“Many of these attacks are disproportionately violent where victims are left mutilated and tortured.”
Cameron argued that these attacks are not just crimes against individuals.
“They are attacks on the constitutional right to dignity, life and safety. They are attacks on the very viability of our rural economy, food security, employment and national stability.”
He said government's Rural Safety Strategy that was “adopted with much fanfare” remained inconsistently implemented and underfunded without clear

accountability.
“Crime intelligence in rural areas is scarce to non-existent. Rural police stations remain understaffed, under-resourced and overwhelmed.
“A recent police strategic briefing highlighted, once again, the need for an intelligence-led policing model to guide operations. This is a move the DA wholeheartedly supports.
“This must not remain in the realm of theory. It must translate into rural deployments backed by crime analyses, actionable intelligence and swift prosecution-led investigations.”
The South African government initially adopted the Rural Safety Strategy in July 2011. It was later reviewed and approved in August 2019, and the reviewed strategy was implemented starting April 2020.
The strategy is a comprehensive approach to addressing safety and security in rural areas, including both farming communities and general rural populations. It focuses on enhanced policing, accessibility and integrated, multi-disciplinary crime-prevention measures.
The strategy aims to reduce crime, improve service delivery and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and rural communities.

As property transactions increasingly shift online for convenience and speed cybercriminals are seizing the opportunity to exploit buyers and sellers. With significant sums of money and sensitive information exchanged during these transactions, both parties are prime targets for fraud.
Criminals frequently impersonate property practitioners or conveyancers and attempt to deceive buyers and sellers into depositing funds into fraudulent bank accounts. To protect yourself our advice is the following:
• Beware of urgent payment requests: Scammers often use pressure tactics, stressing the urgency of finalising a deal. These demands often coincide with a sudden change in banking details, an alarming red flag that should never be ignored.
• Always verify banking details: Before making any payments, contact your conveyancer or property practitioner directly – preferably via phone – to confirm the legitimacy of banking information. Banks can also verify account details for added assurance. We will never change our banking information and we invite clients to confirm the details as
mentioned.
• Educate yourself about common scams: understanding how fraudsters operate helps identify and avoid suspicious activity.
Staying informed could prevent falling victim to increasingly sophisticated schemes.
• Secure your email: Cybercriminals frequently hack email accounts to intercept communication and alter payment instructions. Use strong, unique passwords, avoid sharing login credentials, and ensure your device has up-to-date antivirus software. As cybercrime evolves alongside digital property transactions vigilance is critical. By staying cautious, verifying details and proactively protecting personal information, property buyers and sellers can greatly reduce their risk of fraud and ensure smoother, safer transactions.

The Overberg District Municipality's road budget allocation has been increased to R162,57 million for the 2025'2026 financial year.
This announcement was made last week when the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, together with officials from the provincial Department of Infrastructure, met with road workers, municipal officials, councillors, and mayors of the Overberg District, to discuss the new Provincial Roads Delivery Model for the region.
The engagement followed similar sessions on the Garden Route, in the Central Karoo, Cape Winelands and West Coast districts as part of the Department of Infrastructure’s province-wide roadshow to introduce the new Provincial Roads Delivery Model.
Simmers said: “The introduction of the new Provincial Roads Delivery Model marks a fundamental shift in how road infrastructure will be managed across the province.
“ This model phases out the road agency function of district municipalities. While standardisation remains critical I assess each case on its own merits, guided by the principles of cost-efficiency, value for money, and service excellence.”
He explained that this strategic re-evalu-
ation of the roads delivery model, previously implemented through district municipalities, is underpinned by a comprehensive five-year assessment of performance and value for money for the residents of the Western Cape.
“Through our evaluations we observed that each district operates uniquely, and in the Overberg there is a distinct and commendable focus on people. The full attendance at today’s session reflects the strong support from leadership to ensure that staff are engaged and directly informed.”

In a strong show of unity and commitment to saving lives, stakeholders from across the Grabouw community gathered early on 12 June to shine a spotlight on road safety along the N2 highway, an infamous stretch where pedestrians, particularly youth, are at high risk of being struck by speeding vehicles.
The initiative, held as part of Youth month activities, brought together the South African Police Service (SAPS), Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement, local councillors, the Department of Health, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) road safety ambassadors, Community Policing Forum (CPF), and various community organisations. The event focused on raising awareness of the dangers of crossing the N2 on foot, particularly during early morning and evening hours when visibility is low. Many young people in the area cross the busy highway daily to get to school or work, or to relieve themselves due to insufficient toilets, often risking their lives.
The chair of the CPF David Williams said: “Our youth are not just the future,
they are the now. We cannot continue to lose them to preventable tragedies. This campaign is about empowering them with knowledge and encouraging the entire community to make road safety a shared priority.”
Community members were encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing and to use safer crossing points wherever possible. Visibility, especially during winter mornings, was emphasised as a key factor in preventing accidents. EPWP ambassadors and other volunteers handed out reflective armbands and educated passersby on the importance of being seen. Traffic officers also engaged with motorists, reminding them to reduce speed, and remain alert, particularly in residential and school zones.
The event is part of an ongoing road safety campaign spearheaded by the Western Cape Government’s Road Safety Management and its partners, aiming to reduce pedestrian fatalities and encourage behavioural change through education and community involvement.
As the morning sun rose over Grabouw, the collective message was clear: “Every life matters. Be seen. Be safe.”
Simmers highlighted the Overberg District Municipality’s performance, stating it had consistently delivered high-quality work, met annual targets and provided good value for money.
“In instances where targets were not met the deviations were transparently documented and approved. Given this track record the road function will not be absorbed back into the provincial department.
“ODM will retain its current role, subject to a renewed contractual framework and a more robust monitoring and evaluation process.”
The minister acknowledged the tangible outcomes of ODM’s performance, saying: “Because of the district’s proven capacity and commitment, we have responsibly increased the roads budget allocation in the Overberg from R77,09 million in 2016-'17 to R162,57 million for the 2025-'26 financial year. More significantly, we are now in a position to explore how ODM can support other municipalities in fulfilling their road-related mandates.”
Sakkie Franken, Executive Mayor of the Overberg District Municipality, stated: “Every apple, ton of canola and grain from our region depends on road infrastructure.
“Every tourist that visits supports job creation but they need safe, accessible roads. I am proud of the ODM roads team and even more proud today that our efforts are being recognised at provincial level.
“We are eager to partner with the Western Cape Government and the private sector to achieve our ambitious targets, especially given the extent of our gravel road network.”
In closing, Simmers emphasised the broader impact of the new delivery model and said: “With quality roads comes investment. Investment drives infrastructure development. Infrastructure development creates jobs. Jobs bring dignity and improves the well-being to our communities.”
Shared responsibility for understanding road laws, whether from a cyclist’s or driver’s perspective, must be a peaceful affair.
As someone who has been cycling for 13 years and driving on South African roads with equal experience I’ve always prided myself on understanding both perspectives. I’ve been actively involved in community cycling safety initiatives for over a decade, advocating for the protection of cyclists while promoting responsible road sharing.
Recently, however, I found myself in an uncomfortable position that serves as a stark reminder that even experienced road users can make mistakes, and that our road laws need better understanding from all parties involved.
While driving into Hermanus I momentarily took my eyes off the road, a split-second lapse that every human driver has experienced. In that moment I failed to maintain the legally-required 1-m distance from two cyclists who were riding side by side along the yellow line. It was an error, plain and simple, and one I immediately acknowledged.
On realising my mistake I raised my hand in apology, a gesture of accountability that I believe is essential when we make errors on the road. I then proceeded to join the queue of traffic waiting at the traffic lights, expecting the matter to be resolved through this acknowledgment.
What happened next, however, highlighted a concerning aspect of roadrage culture that affects all road users, regardless of their mode of transport. The cyclist approached my vehicle and, when I lowered my window expecting a civil conversation, unleashed a torrent of verbal abuse that continued despite my repeated apologies. While I understand near-miss incidents can be frightening and emotionally charged, the response demonstrated a troubling trend towards aggression and not constructive dialogue.
During this confrontation I attempted to discuss the relevant road laws, specifically, the legal requirement for cyclists to ride in single file rather than abreast. The cyclist’s response was to justify their positioning by claiming they were “riding in the yellow line” as if this somehow superseded traffic regulations.
This incident highlights crucial gaps in road-law understanding:
WESTERN CAPE PASSING LAWS FOR MOTORISTS:
Under 60 km/h: Maintain 1-m clearance when passing cyclists; Over 60 km/h: Maintain 1,5-m clearance when passing cyclists. These distances are mandatory.
CYCLING REGULATIONS:
Single-file riding: Cyclists are required to ride in single file, not abreast. Road positioning: The yellow line does not grant special exemption from traffic
laws.
Predictable behaviour: Cyclists must follow consistent, predictable patterns. The problem with riding abreast is that when two cyclists ride side by side, they create several safety hazards, including the following:
Impossible passing distances: Motorists cannot maintain the required 1-1,5 m clearance without crossing into oncoming traffic
Increased road space: Two cyclists abreast effectively double the space required for safe passing
Traffic disruption: Forces motorists to either risk dangerous overtaking or remain stuck behind at significantly reduced speeds
Legal violation: Riding abreast violates traffic regulations regardless of road positioning.
This incident reinforces that road safety is a shared responsibility requiring:
From motorists:
Constant attention and focus while driving.
Respect for legally-mandated passing distances.
Patience when safe passing opportunities aren't immediately available.
Immediate acknowledgment and apology for mistakes.
From cyclists:
Adherence to single-file riding regulations; understanding road positioning doesn’t override traffic laws.
Constructive rather than aggressive responses to road incidents.
Recognition that yellow lines are guidance, not legal exemptions.
Moving forward:
After 13 years of cycling and community advocacy, I've learned that road safety improvements come through education, not confrontation. While I accept full responsibility for my momentary lapse in attention, the incident shows we need:
• Better education about cycling laws for all road users.
• Clearer enforcement of single-file riding requirements.
• More constructive dialogue when incidents occur.
• Mutual respect, not aggressive confrontation.
Road safety is not about cyclists versus motorists; it’s about all of us sharing the same space responsibly. When mistakes occur, as they inevitably will, our response should focus on learning and improving, and not blame and aggression.
I’ve spent more than a decade advocating for cycling safety and remain committed to promoting better understanding among all road users. The incident, if anything, reminds us we all have room for improvement, and constructive dialogue will always be more effective than verbal assault. The road belongs to us all; let’s share it safely, legally and respectfully.

I am writing to express my profound concern and frustration regarding an incident involving the local traffic department on 31 May in Steenbras Street, Hermanus Industrial Area.
Between 14:00 and 15:00, traffic officers were conducting a stop-and-go operation, checking licences and vehicles. My concern stems from an incident in which a vehicle, attempting to enter business premises just before the official stop, was pulled to the side of the road. The driver, on seeing the instruction to do so, acknowledged it with a thumbs-up and proceeded to comply.
Despite this clear indication of obedience the officer immediately began to harass the driver. His primary complaint was that the Traffic Department “expects obedience when a traffic officer instructs you to pull off," implying insubordination where none existed. This aggressive tone was entirely unwarranted and set an immediate negative precedent for the interaction.
The officer then proceeded to scrutinise the vehicle, questioning why the front number plate was not fixed to the front bumper. The driver attempted to
My family and I would like to send a shout-out to CuLive Security and Overstrand Fire and Rescue for their very quick response to our crisis recently.
Our extractor caught fire and our fire extinguisher didn’t do the job. We pressed the panic button connected to CuLive, which contacted us immediately and then contacted Overstrand Fire and Rescue on our behalf. Both parties were here in record time and the damage was minimal.
Thank you very much, Faure family

explain that the vehicle had recently undergone a roadworthy test, that the number plate was clearly visible in the front window, and they had the necessary bracket, intending to mount it as soon as possible. Despite this reasonable explanation, and the fact that the plate was visible, the officer continued to threaten the driver with suspension of his licence.
It was evident that the officer was flexing his authority in a manner that was unhelpful and entirely unnecessary. After a needlessly hostile encounter the officer eventually let the driver go. This incident was a terrible and unnecessary display of overreach and harassment by an official whose duty is to serve and protect the public. Such conduct undermines public trust and cooperation, and it reflects poorly on the Hermanus Traffic Department. I urge the department to review its approach to public interactions and ensure its officers conduct themselves with professionalism and respect, rather than resorting to intimidation for minor, easily resolvable issues.

It was a long-standing dream that has finally come true.
Last year the Cliff Path Action Group began to join the two sections of the 12 km Cliff Path, but this didn’t happen without any problems nor without opposition from the Poole’s Bay residents. In October 2024 the High Court ordered the Poole’s Bay Residents Association to remove the illegal balustrade that blocked the Cliff Path and to pay all the legal costs (“Happy Day for Cliff Path”, Hermanus Times, 23 October 2024). And now it is finally happening and the 800 m link at Poole’s Bay was completed on Friday 20 June.
“This is a remarkable achievement,” Jobre Stassen of the Hermanus Cliff Path Action Group, declared, “and we could not have done it without all the contractors. We used only local contractors, and this not only saved us money, but the service we received from them was remarkable.”

In a remarkable triumph for conservation efforts the Overberg has secured a precious jewel in its biodiversity crown. Haarwegskloof, home to the largest remaining connected stretch of renosterveld on earth, officially has had provincial nature-reserve status from April. This landmark declaration represents not just a win for conservation, but is a beacon of hope for one of South Africa’s most threatened and unique ecosystems.
The reserve is owned by WWF South Africa and managed by the Overberg Renosterveld Trust (ORT), a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring the fragile renosterveld ecosystem that once covered large parts of the Overberg.
Located between Swellendam and Bredasdorp, the Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Nature Reserve spans 547 ha of critically-endangered Eastern Rûens Shale Renosterveld. It’s home to a remarkable diversity of endemic and rare plant species. Threatened bird species such as Black Harrier and Cape Vulture have been recorded here
as well as secretive mammals, including the aardwolf and aardvark.
CapeNature facilitates the legal administrative process to declare these sites protected areas in terms of the National Environmental Protected Areas Act (Act 57 of 2003). The declaration, made in April 2025 by Western Cape Provincial Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell, cements the site’s status as a vital stronghold for one of South Africa’s most threatened ecosystems. He congratulated the different stakeholders for working together to make this conservation initiative a reality.
“We have excellent environmental legislation in South Africa, but without passionate and dedicated stakeholders, it would mean very little. I am especially proud of the work CapeNature continues to do to expand the conservation estate in the province. We know that healthy biodiversity is key to protect and buffer us against extreme weather and climate change. But more than that, we owe it to future generations to protect our unique and precious
natural environment.”
CapeNature CEO Dr Ashley Naidoo said CapeNature, the ORT and WWF South Africa have a long-standing relationship with each other. “This declaration is an acknowledgement of the ongoing and admirable conservation efforts that the ORT is carrying out in the Overberg. CapeNature supports these efforts through assessing and reviewing the biodiversity value of these important biodiversity areas. Through stewardship facilitation, legal support and on-the-ground collaboration, CapeNature continues to assist in securing the future of some of the Western Cape’s most vulnerable ecosystems.”
For Dr Odette Curtis-Scott, CEO and founder of the ORT, the declaration marks a milestone in the journey to protect this irreplaceable landscape. “Renosterveld is one of the most threatened vegetation types in South Africa, with an estimated 5% of its original extent intact. Much of it has been ploughed for agriculture, and what little remains is highly fragmented, making the formal protection of Haarwegskloof as a nature reserve really important.”
Haarwegskloof, home to the largest remaining connected stretch of renosterveld on earth, was officially declared a provincial nature reserve in April.
The declaration provides the highest level of legal protection under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act. It ensures that the Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Nature Reserve will remain dedicated to conservation efforts, while allowing for scientific research, habitat restoration and low-impact eco-tourism activities. “We hope our ongoing work with incredible partners and landowners will inspire further protection of renosterveld remnants throughout the region,” said Curtis-Scott.
Haarwegskloof stands as an example of what is possible when government and private organisations work together in the conservation of South African and Western Cape biodiversity.

“Kennis is mag.
“Ek was in Villiersdorp Sekondêr. In graad 12 was daar net twee klasse.
Kennis is mag!
“Doen jou beste in die skool. Neem die regte besluite. Werk hard.

Youth Day in South Africa is celebrated annually on 16 June to commemorate the student uprisings that took place in Soweto 49 years ago.
The Caledon Museum, in partnership with the Caledon Library and DK Fitness, celebrated youth, health and unity by hosting a vibrant and empowering fitness event in the Victoria Hall. Education Officer at the Caledon Museum Marlon Sauls said: “The gathering, attended by spirited young people from across the community, was a celebration of strength, vitality and unity as well as a powerful reminder of what is possible when institutions come together for a shared purpose.”
He said the day’s theme, “Empowering your body. Elevate your mind”, echoed far beyond the walls of the Victoria Hall. “It called on young people to embrace movement, resilience and camaraderie. Through dance, high-energy workouts
and joyful interaction our youth were reminded that wellness is not a privilege but a right, a joy and shared responsibility.”
Sauls expressed heartfelt thanks to DK Fitness, Theewaterskloof Municipality, @Homebased Learning Caledon as well as the Caledon Library, one of the museum’s most valued stakeholders, for their steadfast support and for co-hosting this dynamic event.
“The success of the day is a direct reflection of their generosity, their vision for youth development and their commitment for cultivating a thriving, healthy community.”
He issued an invitation for collaboration to other organizations, schools and community leaders. “Let us build platforms where our youth are not only seen, but uplifted, where they can celebrate who they are whilst building towards who they may become. Together we can create a culture of health, energy and unity that resonates long beyond Youth Day.”

Caledon celebrated Youth Day with the slogan “On court. Out of court.” Its trainer, Bernadette Juries, said because netball is played on a court the slogan is really very apt. “Our vision was to support our youth. To get our youth off the streets we encourage them to partake in sport.”
For Youth Day the Tigers invited members of the Caledon Cricket Club and the Myddleton Soccer Club to participate in their event. “Our players formed their own teams with the cricket and soccer players,” said Juries, “so it was mixed teams and it was really great fun. Our focus was on people from Caledon. People who will be there to encourage and guide
our youth. People who will keep our youth on the right track.”
Before the start of the event she shared a Youth Day message with the players and explained the importance of celebrating Youth Day.
In Genadendal the Yeboneers from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) @ Home Learning programme, managed by local implementing partner, Solution Base, hosted a vibrant Youth Day Activation at the Genadendal Sports Field.
The event featured a dynamic Career Expo, with representatives from the police and the Genadendal Community Policing Forum showcasing a range of career opportunities within the
South African Police Service. Youth attending received valuable insights into the responsibilities of various police units and were treated to a thrilling demonstration by the Crime Prevention Unit, which simulated the successful apprehension of a fleeing vehicle, much to the crowd’s delight.
In the spirit of inclusivity and with many learners attending the event, a sport activation was also incorporated under the theme “A child in sport is a child out of court”. A variety of sporting activities engaged approximately 500 learners throughout the day. The local municipality also partnered in the success of this event.
On 16 June Stanford made history by hosting the first PeaceJam South Africa Junior Peace Slam, a vibrant gathering of young students, mentors, community stakeholders and passionate contributors, all united in the spirit of peace and leadership.
The event was led by Anchelle Damon, Amber Barends and a dedicated team whose tireless efforts ensured its success. Their leadership, backed by strong local support, created a powerful space for inspiration and collaboration.
Central to the day were workshops led by PeaceJam’s experienced peace-building mentors.
These sessions engaged primary-school learners from Die Bron Primary and Okkie Smuts Primary in activities that promoted personal growth, empathy and teamwork, bringing PeaceJam’s core values to life.
A highlight of the day was the moving keynote by Vanessa Tedder of the Stanford Community Policing Forum (CPF), whose message of self-worth and purpose left a lasting impression on all who attended.
The success of the event was
made possible through the generous support of sponsors, donors, and volunteers from Die Bron Primary School, Community Women in Blue, the Stanford Neighbourhood Watch, Overstrand Municipality, Stanford Community Policing Forum, Stanford police, Badisa, Grootbos Foundation, Overberg Gems, TPG, Thusong Service Centre and others whose contributions brought energy and meaning to the day.
“I think the learners enjoyed
it so much they wanted more,” said Damon. “My hope for this initiative is to launch this at every school in the Overstrand and Overberg. It is life changing and really shapes an individual on a different level.
“The engagements were positive and the feedback from the participants were inspirational, which showed it was efficient and effective... The PeaceJam Stanford chapter is poised to grow as a hub for youth leadership in the Overberg.”

Nestled in the serene landscapes of the Hemel & Aarde Valley lies a true hidden gem of local heritage – the Ertjiesvlei Chapel. Far more than just a quaint building, this historic structure stands as a silent witness to nearly a century of community life, faith and perseverance.
According to Danel Serfontein the chapel dates back to 1926, when pioneering farming families of the Ertjiesvlei area came together with a common vision.
“It was built through the collective effort of these early settlers, who pooled their
resources and labour to create a place of worship and gathering. As time went by the farming community added extra spaces, including a kitchen, bathrooms, braai area and the outbuilding that is used for missionary purposes.”
For generations the Ertjiesvlei Chapel served as the heartbeat of its rural community. Beyond Sunday services, it hosted life’s most significant milestones – baptisms, where new lives were celebrated, weddings, where futures were joined, and funerals, where beloved community members were taken leave of with due ceremony.
Foto: Mitzi Buys
Foto: Mitzi Buys
“As with many historic structures the chapel likely faced periods of decline, neglect or even threats of demolition as communities shifted and populations migrated,” said Danel.
“However, its continued existence is a testament to dedicated individuals or groups who tirelessly worked to preserve it, recognising its irreplaceable historical and cultural value.”
Today the Ertjiesvlei Chapel continues its legacy of service. Now available as a self-catering venue for various occasions, it generates income to cover maintenance costs while still fulfilling its original pur-
pose as gathering place for the community. A new chapter in the chapel’s story is now being written as restoration efforts gain momentum.
The local community has rallied once again, with Hermanus residents donating plants and other resources to help preserve this important landmark.

Ek trap in my voorouers se voetspore. Ek is my dorp se trots.
