Could you tell us a little about your character, Baroness Demonica Hardup?

Baroness Demonica Hardup, name and nature the same, darling! She is hard up, because they’ve run out of money, and that’s why she’s trying to palm her two daughters off onto the Prince. Because without the money they are ruined. Her marriage isn’t a marriage made in heaven, she only married him [Baron Hardup] because of the money, so she doesn’t actually love him. In fact, she’s really conniving, she’s sneaky, and she is demonic.

You are wearing a stunning ensemble right now. Do you have a favourite costume in the show?

I do have a favourite costume. I really love the finale one, that’s amazing, the walk down is just fabulous. I’m really fond of the one I’m wearing now which is green and orange, we love that, and there’s also some quite amazing ‘bustleated’ almost Victorian costumes which are gorgeous. It harks back to the Victorian era, and I love those.

What are you most looking forward to about being in Nottingham for panto season this year?

I’m looking forward to mixing with some of the people out on the street. The people that come to the theatre are up for it, they’re really rowdy, and they also come out to have a good time.

I’ve got lots of friends here so morning coffees, things like that, lovely dinners out.

How will you balance your time between Strictly Come Dancing and the start of this pantomime season? Will you get any days off?

No, I don’t have any days off! Every day is taken up with something, either Strictly or panto rehearsals. Of course, learning lines is a really important thing.

I’ve got a lot of charity engagements that I have to achieve before I start in panto because once I get into panto, that is my life over [laughs] because I work seven days a week. Sunday, and through the rest of the week up until Friday I’m doing panto, of course, two shows a day, and then I am filming very early on Strictly. Sometimes I’ve got to go in at seven in the morning. It is really tiring but fulfilling.

Are you working on any other projects at the moment, other than Strictly and panto?

Yes, I’m working on a show called Santa - The Visit for Cheltenham Racecourse. That opens

on the 19th of December, so we’re rehearsing in November for two weeks and getting that up and running.

I’m also releasing a new coffee table book called Revelations - Songs Boys Don’t Sing which goes with my one man show which I’m currently writing for next year. That is going on all of April, May, and June.

My intention will be to take July and August off, then the whole thing starts again.

Which do you prefer: writing, directing, choreographing, singing, acting, judging…?

My favourite thing is to direct and choreograph. That is my most favourite thing. That’s what I was doing before Strictly, that’s what I’ve been doing during Strictly, and that’s where my passion is.

I’m too old to dance anymore, really, to give it any real welly. I’ve had two hip replacements and, you know, there is a time that one should hang up the dance shoes and I feel like this is it. I’ll do a little bit of dancing in the panto, as much as I can cope with, but I still love it. Even just moving about, doing a little bit of dancing is great.

I love singing as much, but my passion as I say is directing and choreographing. I would like to move into film, if I could, in that way. TV is, for me, just a Saturday job anyway, and always was. I never anticipated that it would ever last beyond two or three years. It’s gone on for 21 years now and I’m more surprised than anyone!

Have you worked with any of your Cinderella cast mates before, either in panto or elsewhere?

No, this is the first panto season I have done where I know absolutely no-one so for me it’s going to be all new. A lot of the performers this year it’s their first panto so it’s going to be amazing. I love the fact that new life is bred into the whole season in that way and for me it keeps everything fresh. It’s an amazing cast and we’re very lucky to have convinced these amazing West End Wendys and Broadway stars to come and join us.

Will this be the first time you have performed at the Theatre Royal?

No, I did two seasons of Annie, and I managed to do one here. I just remember standing out

on the street in my Annie drag with the trams going past! But I’ve had a lot of my shows come through here that I’ve directed and choreographed [Son of a Preacher Man, NOW That’s What I Call A Musical], so I’m very lucky to return.

Will you have family and friends coming to see you over the festive season?

Yes, I’ve got an entourage of people that want to come and see the panto. I have a lot of friends here as well and one of them, thankfully, runs a hotel so

all

work-orientated, and for me it’s a good time to be settled in one place and then my friends can come to me.

My family, unfortunately, all live in Australia so none of them can ever come over and see panto. It’s a real shame because I would love them to see the genre because we don’t have that in Australia. I mean there are some places that do put on pantomimes, so people know they exist, but it isn’t as embedded in the culture.

Tell us why people should book to see Cinderella this Christmas? People should book to see Cinderella here at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, because it is full of life, it’s full of vitality, it’s a wonderful age-old story about love, about morality, about people.

It’s a very human story, rags to riches, to say it doesn't matter how much money you’ve got in the world, true love finds true love. I think that’s really important, especially nowadays when there’s so many wars happening in the world. It’s nice to celebrate the nicer side of humanity.

my friends can go and stay at the hotel which is great. We can meet up after the show, have some dinner, which will be really nice. It’ll be festive but very

Also, it’s all-singing, all-dancing, allBroadway, all-West End [laughs]. It’s very glittery, it has amazing singing, dancing, acting, and comedians. It also has the best production values of any show I’ve ever seen. There’s been a lot of money spent on the scenery, and all the costuming, the wigs, the hair, the makeup, the lighting, and the sound.

From the producer of the hit stage adaptation of The Girl on the Train, audiences will not want to miss this edge-of-your-seat brand-new production of Single White Female. Aspect recently caught up with Kym about her love for the stage.

KYM MARSH

“This is my villain era,” says Kym Marsh, with a laugh so warm it is hard to imagine the multi-talented actress with her friendly, likeable persona, being remotely villainous. Yet, in her latest role, as Hedy, in the world premiere stage adaptation of the iconic Nineties’ psychological thriller, Single White Female, audiences are in for a surprise and are going to be unsure whether she’s friend or foe.

The play is about to begin a six-month tour of the UK, taking in 21 venues across the country. It tells the story of recently divorced mum Allie, who is trying to juggle childcare with starting a new business. When she advertises for a lodger to help make ends meet, along comes the seemingly delightful Hedy - but quickly we see that all is not as it seems and their new friendship takes a sinister turn.

So, does portraying someone who appears lovely but might have a darker side come hard to Kym, who was one of the most popular characters, Michelle Connor, in Coronation Street for 13 years, has won a multitude of acting awards and, amongst other things, has starred in Waterloo Road, Strictly Come Dancing and presented BBC One’s Morning Live?

“Actually the last few roles I have done have been pretty villainous and I love it,” she says. “It's so easy to play the typical moustache twiddler. But I want to make Hedy a little bit more layered and actually have people be a bit taken aback, unsure if she’s good or bad right up to the last minute and even feeling sorry for her, particularly near the end. So, it is a bit more complex and nuanced than you might imagine.”

How did she end up being asked to take on such an interesting and chilling role, that thrilled audiences in the 1992 worldwide hit movie?

“After I played Alex Forrest in the stage version of Fatal Attraction, we started to have discussions about what potential other projects there might be and we came up with the idea of Single White Female because it had never been done before,” she explains.

“It was also within that kind of genre of those epic, classic films that had a real impact on people at that time. So I have been attached to it from the start and it’s really exciting - the character of Hedy is so interesting and challenging to play.

“Without giving too much away to anyone who hasn’t seen the film, the character is very complex and, from an acting point of view, it gives me an opportunity to explore so many different places that you don't necessarily really go to normally.”

The new, stage version of Single White Female will appeal to a new generation who have never seen the movie, but it will also give a new perspective to fans of the original film, as it has been updated by author, journalist and broadcaster, Rebecca Reid, with a focus on social media, playing on the themes of ambition, identity and isolation through that lens.

Kym says this has done more than just give it a contemporary spin, it actually makes the story feel even more relevant. “There obviously wasn't social media back in the 90s,” she says. “But if you know the essence of the plot and what it's about, it works very well because we see people trying to imitate people's lives online all the time.

“We hear about these stories of people ‘catfishing’ and so on and I think there are elements of that within Single White Female that make it feel up to date and its themes are even more relevant today than they were then.

“I think the world of social media is a wonderful place, but it's also to be handled with care, because there is always that element of danger about it. And when you have a character like Hedy, and then you put social media into her hands, it can be tricky to the point of dangerous.”

Will fans of the original still recognise the film they know and love - and will they be treated to the iconic stiletto moment? Kym laughs. “The essence is very much still the

same. But the story is slightly changed - as well as being more up-to-date, it's based in the UK rather than being in America. So there are differences but the big, important, epic moments are still in there. And it’s very much still a thriller with a real shock factor - we want to have people on the edge of their seats. I think people will still very much love the story whether they've seen the film or not. As for the iconic stiletto moment - you’ll have to wait and see!”

Kym says that having been in several stage productions recently, including Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party, has given her a real love of the stage, while she continues to enjoy her television career.

“I’m so lucky that I am able to enjoy both being in front of the camera and also being on stage,” she says. “Obviously on stage you get an instant kind of reaction which is very rewarding - you know immediately how much people are enjoying what you’re doing when you are on stage. Television can be very different from that. But there is a real buzz being on stage, you get that atmosphere straight away. And I really like travelling around, seeing different places and some beautiful theatres. It’s interesting that everywhere you go, the audience reacts differently to different parts. Then again, in front of a camera you always get to go again!”

So even now, she gets nervous?

“Of course I do!” she admits. “Theatre is way more nerve wracking, that’s for sure. My dad passed away last year and I have found myself standing in the wings before I go on stage saying, “Come on Dad, come on Dad.” Because you want to feel that someone is helping you out when you are out there, you really hope that nothing’s going to go wrong, that you give a great performance and people enjoy it.”

Aged 49, Kym has not stopped working since she auditioned for the TV show Popstars, 25 years ago, joining the band Hear’Say. She says she is grateful that she has such a warm reception from the British public.

“I feel very fortunate and very lucky that I've been allowed to have the career that I've had and to have been received in the way that I have,” says the mother-of-three, who is also a grandma.

“I think maybe it's because I come across as a sincere individual. I've never tried to hide anything. I make mistakes and hold my hands up and I think that gives me a girl next door feel - perhaps everyone knows someone a bit like me.

“I was brought up by a family who are very caring and open. My family means everything to me. I absolutely adore my kids and my grandchildren. I think I try to only ever be caring and open, too, when I'm being interviewed or meeting new people, because, to be honest, I don't know how to be anything else!”

There are many places on the Single White Female Tour that Kym is excited to visit - particularly Brighton’s Theatre Royal where the play opens in January and, as she hails from the North West, Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool venues will be special. But the very last night of the tour will be particularly memorable for her in more ways than one.

“We will be in Malvern and it’s my 50th birthday,” she explains. “I am not sure exactly what we will be doing that night after the final show but I do know Malvern won’t be quite as peaceful as it usually is!”

Single White Female will be showing at the Theatre Royal Nottingham 20 -24 January 2026. For bookings call 01159 895555 or visit trch.co.uk

SAVE THE CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY 2025

TV PERSONALITIES INCLUDING ALISON HAMMOND, JOE SWASH AND MYLEENE KLASS MBE AMONGST THOSE SUPPORTING THE CHARITY’S ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

A star-studded lineup of celebrities have teamed up to support Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day, which is set to return for a fourteenth year on Thursday 11 December.

Actor Ashley Jensen, TV presenter, Paralympic medallist and journalist Ade Adepitan, comedian and writer Dom Joly, comedian, writer and podcaster Jen Brister, and influencer and entrepreneur Olivia Bowen are all teaming up with BAFTA nominated TV presenter and broadcaster Alison Hammond, actor, presenter and author Joe Swash and broadcaster, musician and campaigner Myleene Klass to encourage the nation to don their favourite pre-loved pullovers and join in the merriment!

Christmas Jumper Day sees schools, workplaces and groups of friends and families adorn themselves in their wackiest woolies for the day, whilst raising money for Save the Children. Since it launched in 2012, the festive fundraiser has raised over £40 million to help transform the lives of children both in the UK and around the world to stay safe, healthy and learning.

Ahead of the big day, the host of famous faces shared their tree-mendous traditions and tips on how to get involved with their jolly jerseys in a sustainable way this Christmas Jumper Day:

Alison Hammond said: “For the past couple of years, I’ve been flat out doing panto, but this Christmas, I’ve got a proper break! Usually, I spend the day at my sister’s place – she’s the queen of roast dinners. I’ll be honest, I fully take advantage and crash on the sofa while she whips up the most amazing meal. After such a fullon year, having a day to properly relax feels like the ultimate treat.”

“We’ve got a little Christmas Day tradition going on in our family. We open a few pressies in the morning, tuck into lunch, and then unwrap the rest later on. It’s a great way to keep the excitement going all day! There’s

always a bit of charades, a lot of snoozing once we’ve eaten, and plenty of festive telly. And the King’s speech? My son never misses it – it’s become one of his favourites.”

“I absolutely love Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day – it’s such a fun way to do some good! And it’s so simple to take part. If your December’s jam-packed like mine, just pop to your nearest charity shop and grab a fabulous pre-loved jumper. Every bit raised goes towards helping children in the UK and around the world stay safe, healthy and learning. So come on babes, get involved and sign up now!”

because, having kids myself, I know how important it is for children to feel safe, protected and supported. Anything we can do to help raise money so children all over the world can experience these basic rights is something I’m all for. You don’t even need a new jumper to get involved – grab any old thing from your cupboard and spruce it up with some tinsel or baubles. Job’s a good ’un!”

Myleene Klass said: “Christmas Day in casa Klass starts very early, with my littlest one waking us all up in excitement for the big day. There is wrapping paper everywhere and lots of discussions about who does and who doesn’t eat Brussel

“We have a great Christmas tradition in our house, involving Father Christmas. Once he has dropped off all the presents, I put wrapping paper in front of the living room door, which the children then tear through - creating an adorable photo. There’s now a competition of who can race down the stairs the fastest to burst the paper first, which I always try to win.

“I have been a Save the Children ambassador for over 13 years and have seen the incredible work they do both in the UK and across the world – most recently in Colombia last year. With so many crises occurring globally, it can often leave you feeling helpless and overwhelmed. That’s why I love supporting Christmas Jumper Day. It’s such an easy and fun way to get involved and know you’re doing something important that will help make a difference to someone’s life. Whether it’s a bake sale at school or work, or just wearing your wackiest woolly and donating a couple of pounds to Save the Children, you could be helping give children around the world a happy and healthy start to their

Ashley Jensen said: “Christmas Day in our house is very much a doggy-friendly Christmas,

with my dogs Lloyd and Amber causing mayhem as they rip the wrapping paper off the presents, play with it and run around the house creating a trail of mess behind them. It’s also a time to eat food we never usually have during the rest of the year or really like. In my family, it’s the Brussel sprout. Personally I love them. Nobody in my family likes them, but I don’t like food going to waste so I always make sure they eat them.

“I’m supporting Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day again this year because it’s a fun way for everyone to get involved and do some good. All you have to do is don a silly second-hand festive jumper and donate as much or as little as you can. I believe that every child deserves a safe and happy childhood and the smallest amount can help make a difference to children both in this country and around the world.”

Ade Adepitan said: “Christmas Day at my house is all about family. I like it when all the aunts, uncles and kids come together and there’s lots of eating and drinking – it’s all about the good vibes. And if it snows outside, that’s a bonus.

“I love decorating the tree with my son. We have a massive collection of baubles and tinsel, and we make a big moment of turning the lights on. That’s when it really starts to feel like Christmas.

“I’m supporting Christmas Jumper Day because the work that Save the Children does is so important. Life is tough for many children who go without the love and support that is so vital in childhood, and we’re lucky to have a charity which is making sure children from across the world are safe and supported.”

Dom Joly said: “I’m an ex-goth so I can be quite grumpy around Christmas time, but some festive traditions have creeped in over the years. It doesn’t feel like Christmas unless I have a tube of my favourite biscuits, chocolate Bath Olivers, which are so rare these days that my wife has to drive halfway across the country to find them. I also take my two black Labradors on a walk around the park on Christmas Day – they both have special Christmas collars that flash and look very festive.

“I’ve been to see the incredible work that Save the Children is doing to support

children and families on the ground in Ukraine. In areas of conflict all around the world, the charity is working tirelessly to ensure children still have access to food, education, and a modicum of structure in a world that has often been ripped apart. Christmas Jumper Day is such a simple way of supporting this vital work – I’d urge everyone, even Christmas grumps like me, to get involved if you can.”

Jen Brister said: “Because I’m half Spanish, we have a big occasion on Christmas Eve. I make paella and lots of little tapas, and my children will be given a new pair of Christmas pyjamas which they will proudly model around the house.

“I’m getting involved in Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day because I think that every child has the right to a happy future, and I would love to give every child in the world the same opportunities that I am very fortunate to give my own. You can also support the planet while you’re at it by re-purposing an old jumper or buying something vintage – it’s what Attenborough would want after all.”

Olivia Bowen said: “I love Christmas Jumper Day, because it’s a great excuse to put on a silly jumper and raise money for an amazing cause. All you need to do is have fun, find a second-hand jumper and remember to donate as much as you can to support children here in the UK and all around the world!”

Sign up your school, workplace or friend and family group to get your free fundraising pack brimming with creative ideas to help make the most of the day. Then on the big day, grab your favourite second-hand jumper and donate what you can to Save the Children to help children in the UK and around the world stay safe, healthy and learning.

Disabled N for ‘Young

Parents of Charlotte Walker, 7, had no idea if their daughter would ever speak, eat or walk when she was born with a rare genetic condition – but this year she’s made huge steps becoming more independent and even got over her fear of dolls.

A seven-year-old deafblind girl from Nottingham has been shortlisted for a national charity’s ‘Young Person of the Year’ Award in recognition of the incredible progress she’s made in recent years, learning to eat, sign and speak.

Charlotte Walker was diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome, which affects all of her senses, at just a few days old. Her mum, Vanessa, 46, didn’t know if Charlotte would ever be able to do things like eat, drink, communicate and walk on her own. But Charlotte – who uses a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid – has made huge progress since those early days.

She’s been supported by the charity Sense’s MSI, or multi-sensory impairment, team since October 2018, when Charlotte was just eight months old, receiving support both in the family home and in the charity’s hub in Loughborough. In that time, the charity has supported Charlotte and her mum to learn key Makaton signs together, so the pair could communicate and understand each other better. This supported the development of speech, which Charlotte now uses alongside signing. Charlotte and her family recently fronted a fundraising campaign for Sense this year, helping the charity to raise money for its community hubs, including the Loughborough Hub.

Charlotte, who lives with her parents, brother and sister and her pet dog, Copper, has had a milestone year. At Easter time, Charlotte, who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, communicated to her family a newfound determination to be more independent.

Charlotte’s increased independence, particularly with her self-care skills, has been life changing and so positive. As a way for Charlotte to focus on the progress she's making, her parents set up a reward system. Each positive day earns her a 'star' in her rocket.

In deciding what her reward would be for two weeks of progress, Charlotte wanted to buy a dolly. Charlotte’s family were surprised, because she’s had a lifelong fear of baby dolls and visibly shakes when near one. However, Charlotte decided she wanted to

girl up Person’ Award

overcome her fear and the family visited their local toy shop to buy her a new doll, which Charlotte named Hannah. Though she was initially shaking in the aisle at the toy shop, once the family brought Hannah home for the rest of the day Charlotte was a complete natural, looking after her dolly with pride. Charlotte’s now saving up for more stars for a cot bed for Hannah.

Vanessa has also observed her daughter showing more emotional intelligence this year, apologising to others for her mistakes and taking ownership. She has really developed a deeper understanding of the consequences of her behaviour.

Charlotte’s incredible progress hasn’t gone unnoticed at Sense – the national charity that supports disabled people with complex needs – as she is now up for the charity’s ‘Young Person of the Year’ Award.

Responding to being shortlisted, Charlotte’s mum Vanessa said: “When I was told Charlotte had been shortlisted, it had been a really hard week, but this felt like a real moment to be grateful and take a step back to look at everything she has overcome. It means a lot. There is so much progress that Charlotte's made and it’s wonderful to see her celebrated for everything she can do and the big steps of progress

she’s made – the fact that other people recognise that in Charlotte is very special. We went out and got cakes to celebrate too!”

Rebecca Liddiard, Head of Children and Young People Services at Sense, said: “Charlotte is an amazing, resilient young girl who has worked really hard to learn how to communicate through sign and speech, all with Sense’s support. It’s fantastic, and heartwarming, news that Charlotte has been shortlisted for this Award in recognition of all that she’s achieved. I have no doubt Charlotte will continue to thrive and we wish her all the luck in the world at the Awards!”

Sense received more than 100 nominations for its awards this year. It was down to a team of disabled judges to review the nominations and decide a shortlist for each category. These judges are: Strictly Come Dancing finalist Tasha Ghouri; one of the BBC’s 100 Women of 2024 Roxy Murray; award-winning scientist Max Fisher; disability advocate Pravjoth Gill; and medal-winning ballroom and Latin American dancer Shaun Hayward. More information about the judges can be found here: www. sense.org.uk/sense-awards/2025-senseawards-judges

Sense will be revealing this year’s winners on its social media channels in November.

Festival Raising Over Half a Million

Beat The Streets, the music festival originated by DHP Family to raise funds to help homeless people, will return on Sunday 25 January 2026

The multi-venue festival in Nottingham has raised an impressive total of £554,155 for Framework - the charity working to end homelessness across the East Midlands - since its inception in 2018. Along the way, it has been recognised for its community impact at the UK Festival Awards winning the national title in 2022.

Tickets will be on sale for Beat The Streets on 27 October, at a recommended donation of £20, with organisers hoping many will choose the option to donate more to secure a wristband for access to all venues across the day.

This year, there will also be special high-ticket items available to purchase including a backstage tour of Rock City; a golden ticket for access to every single Rock City show in 2026 and a Splendour backstage tour.

Joseph Patten, DHP Family, said: “Hitting a milestone like half a million pounds raised after our 2025 festival was a massive moment for everyone involved in Beat The Streets and we’re excited to get the ball rolling again now for 2026. We’ll have an exciting line-up of Nottingham’s greatest musicians coming soon, so watch this space and grab your ticket next week to show your support for Framework.”

Last year’s Beat The Streets fundraising went towards securing Nottingham’s Street Outreach Team. These vital frontline workers go out 365 days a year to provide lifesaving support to rough sleepers across the city helping them to find safe and suitable accommodation. The funds raised in 2026 will go towards

Framework’s Homeless to Home campaign to complete the development of 20 high-quality, self-contained homes in Basford. When complete, Lee House will become home to some of the most vulnerable men in Nottingham along with round the clock support to help them move towards a better future.

Previously the money raised has enabled Framework to employ mental health workers to support rough sleepers with complex needs, enabled its emergency winter shelter to stay open all year and helped to open new accommodation for former rough sleepers.

Claire Eden, Framework's Head of Fundraising, said: “Funds raised at Beat The Streets make a massive difference in helping Framework meet the challenges of homelessness, and particularly rough sleeping, in Nottingham. Income from Beat The Streets allows us to address the most urgent need at that time, supplementing the ongoing commitment of Nottingham City Council.

"Since 2018, Beat The Streets income has been used to employ extra staff, keep services open, and help fund the building of new accommodation, among many other things. Being able to count on this support is worth its weight in gold.

"We are so grateful for the continuing commitment of DHP to present this outstanding music and fundraising event, and to everyone who makes it happen - the staff at DHP, the musicians who give their services and everyone else who volunteers and, of course, the enthusiastic audiences.

"Roll on Sunday 25 January for another

memorable and inspiring event."

Beat The Streets has seen hundreds of artists from across the region take to the stages over the years including Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods, Grace Petrie, Ferocious Dog, Do Nothing, Divorce, Bored Marsh, JayaHadaDream and GIRLBAND! to name just a few.

Richard Whitehead MBE RICHARD

Richard Whitehead MBE, Paralympic gold medallist, worldrecord holder, and champion of diversity and inclusion, crossed the finish line of the TCS New York City Marathon to mark a monumental milestone, the 100th marathon of his extraordinary career.

More than two decades ago, Richard set foot on the streets of New York for his very first marathon, having never run a mile before. That race ignited a passion that would carry him across finish lines around the globe. In January 2025, Richard announced an ambitious new challenge, to complete 20 marathons across the world in a single year. Fittingly, this journey came full circle in New York, the city where it all began.

Reflecting on the achievement, Richard shared: “It’s such an incredible feeling to have completed my 100th marathon.

I’m proud of the miles I’ve run, but even prouder of the impact my journey has, showing people that with the right support and barriers removed, anything is possible.

I know the power of visibility, and I’ve seen how someone like me who lives with a very physical disability, can inspire others to believe in their own potential.”

Richard’s feat is unprecedented, no double amputee has ever completed 100 marathons. Already the fastest amputee marathon runner in the world, this latest accomplishment adds another world record to his name. But for Richard, the challenge has never been about speed or numbers, it’s about possibility.

“I hope everything I do embodies courage and inclusion,” he said. “I want to proudly advocate for people living with disabilities and inspire others to believe that they too can achieve the extraordinary.”

Throughout his career, Richard has used sport as a platform to break down barriers, promote wellbeing, build community, and drive social change. His unwavering energy and optimism continue to motivate people of all ages and abilities.

“I see my disability as a resource, not a hindrance,” Richard added. “I want to help others see that they can make a difference, and that everyone has a gift to nurture and a story worth telling.”

This milestone is not the finish line for Richard, it’s a launchpad for what’s next. With exciting plans on the horizon, stay tuned for more announcements from one of the most inspiring athletes of our time.

Following the success of its Limitless Dining concept, KINU is delighted to introduce its collection of three private dining rooms, each designed to offer a uniquely intimate and elevated dining experience in the heart of Nottingham.

Nestled within KINU’s moody, Japaneseinspired interiors, the private rooms blend modern elegance with refined comfort, creating the perfect setting for celebrations, corporate events, or gatherings with family and friends. Each space can accommodate between 12 and 16 guests, offering a sense of exclusivity while maintaining KINU’s signature warmth and hospitality.

Guests booking a private room can choose from a dedicated private dining menu, each featuring a curated selection of our most celebrated Japanese-Asian dishes crafted fresh and tailored exclusively for the private dining experience

A gluten-free menu is available upon request, and the team will be happy to accommodate any other dietary requirements with prior notice via email.

Our private dining rooms are an extension of what makes KINU special — intimacy, flavour, and the freedom to indulge without limits. They’re designed to give guests an unforgettable experience whether it’s a milestone celebration, business dinner, or special night with loved ones.

Hero plates include:

Yuzu Miso Glazed Fish – delicately glazed with sweet-savory miso and lifted by bright yuzu, a refined balance of smoky depth and citrus freshness

Smoked Short Rib Rendang – smokey, slow-cooked beef short rib with a charred blackened crust, braised until fall-off-thebone tender, finished in a rich coconut curry layered with warm spices and aromatics for a deep, indulgent flavour

Signature Xiao Long Bao – handmade fresh every day by KINU’s talented chefs, these delicate pleated dumplings are filled with steaming, aromatic broth. Served piping hot, each bite bursts with rich flavour for a moment of pure theatre at the table

KINU has devised a drinks menu of cocktails with character - featuring three distinctive signatures that balance

EXPERIENCE PRIVATE DINING AT KINU INDULGE WITHOUT LIMITS

elegance, theatre, and originality: Lady Gion – hibiscus and rose–infused gin shaken with lychee and lemon, to pped with prosecco and served in a coupe with an edible flower and pink shimmer

Kintsugi Sour – sake and plum liqueur balanced with citrus and shaken to a silky foam, finished with edible gold dust and a crack motif across the surface

Kinutini – vodka and sake shaken with lychee liqueur and a whisper of coconut water, served ice-cold with a single lychee pearl.

No KINU experience is complete without dessert. The highlight of the menu is Black Sesame & Caramel Harmony - nutty black sesame ice cream paired with warm miso caramel, crisp sesame brittle, tangy yuzu curd, and dark chocolate crumble, finished with a sculptural charcoal tuile. Served with tableside drama, it is a finale that balances richness, freshness, and texture, designed as much for indulgence as it is for theatre.

The look and feel of the restaurant has been designed from the heart. KINU’s interiors are original, personal, and intentional. Every detail has been designed exclusively for this space by owner Goz, reflecting a vision of

moody luxury that feels both indulgent and welcoming. Deep charcoal tones, velvet textures, Japanese birch trees, and gold accents create an atmosphere equally suited to romantic dinners, stylish celebrations, and corporate evenings.

Three private dining spaces, named Gion, Tanaka and Kintsugi, seat between 12 and 25 guests, each inspired by Japanese heritage and philosophy.

Goz explains her vision beyond food : “KINU is my labour of love, created with the intention of being more than just a place to eat. I wanted to design a space where guests feel welcomed and immersed in the experience, with every detail considered to make their time with us truly memorable and somewhere they would want to return to again and again.”

“Every detail has been designed exclusively for KINU, with originality and authenticity at its core. This isn’t a concept borrowed from elsewhere, it is a one-of-a-kind experience created especially for Nottingham’s guests. As an independent restaurant, we are proud to be part of Nottingham’s ever-growing dining scene and to offer a real alternative to the high street chains. I am so excited to finally share it with everyone.”

Iberico World Tapas

The Original Nottingham Tapas Restaurant. Bringing together the rustic simplicity of tapas dining with refined ingredients and world flavours.

Before Bar Iberico there was Iberico World Tapas, an elder sibling in every respect. Grown up and with a definite air of sophistication. I remember when the restaurant first opened and people raved about the 'Inside out' chicken wings and the charcuterie. I went in the early days and loved the ambience (and ham) but never went back. As I had wanged on to The Northerner about Iberico World Tapas leading the charge for the 'new crew' (Escabeche, Bar Iberico etc) we decided to go on a child free night.

Like it's younger sister the restuarant offers a express dining deal which we walked in at the end of. The restaurant was packed, every table filled and

because of the low ceilings felt a touch overwhelming with the noise. It turns out that one large table was responsible for 90% of the din and as soon as they left I let out a sigh of relief. I think I am probably more sensitive to noise than most people but living every day through toddler tantrums and a constant flow of answering back from a 9 year old I would just like everyone to shut the f&*@ up once in a while.

Anyway onto the actual point of the post - the food. The Northerner couldn't spot anything on the main section of the menu that took his fancy so decided to go big on appetisers and snacks and I took a very selfish approach of ordering whatever I wanted. We started

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

with croquettes, a cheese and ham board, smoked almonds and tomato bread.

Observant readers may spot that the charcuterie board above has no cheese, a minor error which was resolved quickly. The cheese taking the place of the iberico ham, a damn shame. We should have inspected the menu in a bit more detail. The star of the show were the croquettes which The Northerner promptly ordered 2 more of upon finishing the first two. It was all 'nice' but compared to El Gato Negro (in Manchester) we were left underwhelmed. It feels harsh to say this but for the cost of the meal there should be a bit more than 'nice'.

My two seafood dishes did not miss the spot though - the prawns were so sweet, worth all the effort to peel and eat them. The flesh had that perfect dryness/not a hint of slime and with the lemon and sauce reminded me of the amazing prawns that they used to serve at Sexy Mama Loves Cicchetti (RIP). The grilled gem lettuce with anchovies were another win for me (The Northerner was not a fan of either of these dishes) but there wasn't enough manchego to make an impact. The pickled onions were a touch too sour but did bring some balance.

The Northerner had ordered chorizo and I had the asparagus dish and as much as he disliked the chorizo, I loved the asparagus. Even though the chorizo was cooked in the traditionl method The Northerner said it was a little too close to a black pudding texture and as I only really like chorizo fried to a crisp I abstained. The asapargus with butter milk and hazlenut pesto was my favourite dish.

The nuts had so much depth of flavour they grounded quite a light dish in a forest of toasty autumn. The buttermilk added a sour acidity which tasted a lot better than it sounds. It was my first

DINNER

asparagus of the season so I was SOLD.

Now the restaurant was quieter we decided to share churros for pudding - as it was such a meal of two halves (The Northerner barely touching the larger dishes and me leaving most of the appetizers to him) we hoped this would be a uniting end to the experience. It was the high point; The Northerner declaring them the best he has ever had. Cooked all the way through so there was no wetness in the dough; with a thick chocolate sauce, more like melted chocolate than hot chocolate. It may not be authentic but it tastes nicer in my opinion.

At the end of the night I looked around the nearly empty restaurant and realised little has changed since I went over a decade ago, this nostalgia does tip slightly into a need for investment. The core theme is strong and unites the restaurant but it could do with a bit of care, love and money spending on it. The elephant in the room is that Iberico World Tapa's is too easy to compare to Bar Iberico, and despite being more expensive the food is on par (with the service in Bar Iberico being better in my opinion). So again I find myself wondering if it will be another 10 years before I return.

There’s something magical about the scent of Christmas dinner wafting through the house — the golden roast in the oven, the crackle of potatoes crisping, and the sound of laughter mingling with the clink of glasses. The Christmas table isn’t just a meal; it’s a memory in the making.

This year, let’s go beyond tradition and craft the ultimate Christmas dinnera feast that celebrates the classics, embraces a few bold twists, and brings everyone together around the most delicious table of the year.

Setting the Scene

Before we talk turkey (literally), start with the atmosphere. Dimmed lights, flickering candles, and a playlist that mixes Michael Bublé with a hint of Sinatra set the tone. Dress the table in soft linens, scatter sprigs of pine or eucalyptus, and finish with a touch of sparkle - a gold napkin ring or a few mercury-glass ornaments do wonders.

A Sparkling Start

Kick off the evening with something festive in hand. A Cranberry Prosecco Fizz hits the perfect note - tangy, bubbly, and effortlessly elegant. Mix chilled prosecco with a splash of cranberry juice and a sprig of rosemary. For non-drinkers, a pomegranate spritz with soda water is just as celebratory.

Reinventing the Roast

No Christmas table feels complete without a show-stopping centerpiece.

The Classic: Roast Turkey with Sage Butter, brined overnight for tenderness, rubbed with sage butter under the skin, and roasted to a golden crisp - this turkey is the crown jewel. Baste generously, rest patiently, and carve proudly.

A FEAST TO Remem b er

The Twist: Beef Wellington

For those who want drama and decadence, a perfectly medium-rare beef fillet wrapped in duxelles and puff pastry never fails to impress. It’s indulgence, wrapped in pastry perfection.

Vegetarian option? Try a Mushroom and Chestnut Wellington - earthy, rich, and satisfying enough to make even meatlovers jealous.

Sides

That Steal the Show

Here’s where your creativity shines. Every great Christmas dinner has its heroes - and they often come in side-dish form.

Crispy Roast Potatoes: Parboiled, roughed up, and roasted in goose fat for the ultimate crunch. Sprinkle with sea salt and rosemary flakes.

Honey-Glazed Parsnips & Carrots: Sweet, caramelized, and irresistible.

Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta & Chestnuts: Forget soggy sprouts - roast them until crisp and toss with smoky pancetta and nutty chestnuts.

Cauliflower Cheese Gratin: Creamy, golden, and comforting - a hug in a dish.

The Finishing Touches

No feast is complete without the trimmings: rich, glossy gravy, tangy cranberry sauce, and warm Yorkshire puddings puffed to perfection. Don’t forget the stuffing - a mix of sausage,

herbs, and breadcrumbs that’s good enough to eat by the spoonful.

Sweet Endings

Finish with a flourish. The best Christmas desserts combine nostalgia with indulgence.

Classic Christmas Pudding: Steamed, spiced, and doused in brandy for that allimportant flambé moment.

Sticky Toffee Trifle: Layers of sponge, toffee sauce, whipped cream, and crushed honeycomb - a modern masterpiece.

Cheese Board Finale: Stilton, brie, and aged cheddar, served with fig chutney and crackers, for those who prefer savoury over sweet.

The Grand Finale

As the plates clear and laughter lingers, serve a round of Irish coffees or spiced hot chocolates. Add a mince pie (or two) for good measure. After all, Christmas comes but once a year - and this is how you make it count.

The Takeaway

The ultimate Christmas dinner isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence. It’s the crackle of conversation, the warmth of good food, and the joy of everyone gathered together. Whether you serve turkey or tofu, champagne or cocoa, the true magic is in the moments shared around the table.

BAR GIGI SERVES UP THE ITALIAN DREAM

NOTTINGHAM modern Italian restaurant Bar Gigi continues to elevate its offering with a new menu, thoughtfully put together for Autumn. Curated with the darker, colder months in mind, the new menu has been created with authentic Italian flavours at the front and centre. Featuring an array of dishes that make the most of the season’s freshest produce, and captivating pairings which allow the ingredients to shine through, the menu builds on the restaurant’s popular food offering which has helped to place it firmly on the city’s foodie map.

Menu highlights include the show-stopping duck egg yolk raviolo, which features a large single raviolo filled with a ricotta and herb filling carefully piped around the egg yolk. Served with a brown butter, basil oil and Parmesan foam, it makes a comforting and indulging match made in heaven.

Meanwhile, for seafood lovers, the sea bass, served with fennel puree, confit fennel, fish velouté and olive oil caviar made from Bar Gigi’s very own homegrown and pressed olive oil, is sure to impress. The delicate flavour of the fish along with the peppery olive oil and sweet fennel, work well together to create a dish that is fresh and inviting. To

finish, diners can indulge in plum and ricotta cake, served with whipped mascarpone, a sweet treat inspired by Italian upside-down pear cake.

Explaining more about his inspiration for the new menu, head chef at Bar Gigi, Connor Robson, said: “This new menu feels very personal for us. A lot of the dishes are either inspired by the restaurant’s Italian family heritage or precious memories of food-centred trips. “Italians traditionally use Autumn to celebrate the harvest season, with a focus on rich, earthy flavours and comforting dishes that feel like home. That’s something I’ve really channelled in this new autumn menu, and as we move into the new season, we really wanted to add a pasta dish which is comforting but still reminds us of our travels. Cavatelli, which is my favourite dish on the menu, is a perfect example of that. It’s a typical Puglian pasta shape made with flour and water, and the truffle cream adds that warm hug on colder days.”

For diners looking to visit at lunchtime, there have also been some changes to the lunch offering. Pasta is the shining star of the new lunch menu, with four standout dishes that all have their own identity. These include a Sicilian fennel sausage and pistachio

rigatoni, a creamy courgette bucatini and Bar Gigi’s signature beef short rib ragu. All the dishes served at Bar Gigi have a story. From family travels through Sicily and southern Italy, to choosing high-quality ingredients from local or trusted Italian suppliers, Bar Gigi is a place where “ogni piatto racconta una storia” - every dish tells a story.

Bar Gigi is located in an eye-catching 15th Century building at Flying Horse Walk. Its iconic black and white building is steeped in history and includes a two-floor restaurant and a sprawling labyrinthine network of medieval caves which host a range of intimate tasting events and private bookings throughout the year.

Serves 4

MOB Kitchen's Pomegranate and Pistachio Pavlova Wreath

I Whip up your British Lion eggs to make a delicious pavlova. Piled high with raspberries, pomegranate seeds and pistachios, this pudding will make a beautiful centrepiece for your Christmas table.

Don’t let the egg yolks go to waste. Use them to make a hollandaise sauce for breakfast the next day.

Ingredients:

• 100g Pistachios

• 4 British Lion Eggs

• 200g Caster Sugar

• 1 Tsp Cornflour

• 200ml Double Cream

• 100ml Natural Yoghurt

• 40g Icing Sugar

• 1 Pomegranate

• 300g Raspberries

• Bunch of Mint

Method:

1. Roughly chop your pistachios.

2. Separate your British Lion egg whites and yolks, saving your yolks for another meal – perhaps a hollandaise sauce for a tasty way to start the day. Place your egg whites in a large bowl and whisk to stiff peaks with electric beaters.

3. Add a spoonful of sugar and whisk again until your mixture forms stiff peaks. Add more sugar and whisk again, continuing in this way until all of the sugar has been added and you have a thick and glossy mixture.

4. Add the cornflour and half of the chopped pistachios and gently fold in until totally incorporated.

5. Line a large baking tray with parchment and gently spoon your

mixture into a large circle on your tray, allowing odd peaks to stick up to give texture. Gently smooth out the top to accommodate your toppings later.

6. Bake for 1 hour, or until you have a crisp, white shell and leave to cool completely.

7. Add your double cream and icing sugar to a bowl and whisk until it forms thick, soft peaks, being careful not to over-whip it - it should look smooth, not fluffy. Add your yoghurt and fold through with a spoon.

8. Deseed you pomegranate and discard the skin.

9. Add your cream to the top of your pavlova and finish with your raspberries, pomegranate seeds, remaining chopped pistachios and mint. Serve and enjoy!

FOCUS ON East Bridgford

Community and Facilities

At the heart of East Bridgford is Butt Field, a green open space that hosts a variety of sporting activities and social events. Sports and recreation are well catered for: there are cricket and football clubs, a bowling green, and a thriving tennis club The village hall is another community hub, hosting theatre, art groups, dance classes, and local meetings. A development of the playground next to Butt Field has made it fully accessible, with inclusive equipment like specialist swings and sensory play areas — a testament to the village’s commitment to welcoming everyone. Amenities

Despite its modest size (population around 1,760 as of the 2021 Census East Bridgford supports a solid range of everyday facilities. The village has a Post Office and general store, a newsagent, a hairdresser, and a medical centre, ensuring residents don’t always have to travel to access essentials. The village’s historic fabric

adds to its appeal. Much of it lies within a conservation area, which preserves winding roads, old cottages, and mature trees, giving the village a timeless feel. Religious and cultural life is also strong: there’s St Peter’s Church, a Grade I listed building with Anglo-Saxon foundations.

Education

For families, one of the biggest draws is St Peter’s Church of England Primary School. The school has a stellar reputation and was rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted in a recent inspection. For older children, secondary education is available in nearby Bingham, where schools like Toot Hill serve the local area.

village into the surrounding countryside, offering beautiful walking and cycling routes, especially towards the Vale of Belvoir. These paths also help give East Bridgford its strong rural character and sense of openness.

Buying a Brand-New Home in the New Year

The beginning of a new year often brings a sense of renewal and fresh opportunities. For many people, it’s also the perfect time to take a major step toward their dream of homeownership. Buying a brand-new home in the new year offers not only the excitement of a fresh start but also several practical benefits—modern design, energy efficiency, and the peace of mind that comes with owning something untouched and built to last.

One of the main advantages of purchasing a newly built home is that everything is modern and up to current standards. New homes are designed with today’s lifestyles in mind—open floor plans, larger kitchens, walk-in closets, and smart-home technology. They also meet updated building codes and energy-efficient standards, which can save homeowners a significant amount of money over time. Features like better insulation, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and energy-saving appliances make new homes both environmentally friendly and costeffective.

Another appealing aspect is the ability to personalize your space. Many builders allow buyers to choose from different floor plans, finishes, and upgrades before the home is completed. This means you can pick the type of flooring,

countertops, and even paint colours that match your style. Buying a brand-new home gives you the opportunity to create a space that truly reflects your personality without the need for immediate renovations or costly repairs.

Financially, the new year can also be a great time to buy. Builders often offer special promotions or incentives to attract buyers, such as covering closing costs or including free upgrades. Additionally, mortgage rates and loan programs may be favourable at the start of the year, especially if you have spent time improving your credit or saving for a larger down payment during the previous year. Consulting with a real estate agent and a mortgage professional can help you find the best deals and understand all your financing options.

Finally, owning a new home provides peace of mind. Most new homes come with builder warranties that cover major structural components and appliances for several years. This protection means fewer unexpected expenses and more confidence as you settle into your new space. In summary, buying a brand-

new home in the new year is an exciting and rewarding decision. It symbolizes a fresh chapter filled with comfort, customization, and long-term value.

Whether you’re purchasing your first home or upgrading to something larger, a new home can be the perfect way to begin the year with stability, pride, and optimism for the future.

Winter Wildlife Wonders

You might think that with shorter, colder days and the prospect of a wintery shower, the best way to appreciate wildlife at this time of year would be to open or book or pop on a natural history documentary whilst sat in a fireside chair. However, whilst a handful of creatures are hibernating, and a few favourites have headed south, winter has much to offer in terms of wildlife watching.

When the first snowfall of winter arrives, even just a light dusting, it can open up a whole new element to wildlife watching with the opportunity to look out for the tracks of mammals such as fox, deer, otter and badger.

When you’ve exhausted the opportunities presented by looking at the ground, winter is a great time to look up into the treetops. With trees bare of their leaves, many birds are easier to spot amongst the branches, and a range of species will now be forming winter roosts. Large gatherings high in the trees provide distinct benefits for birds in terms of both safety in numbers and additional, much needed, warmth. Birds to look out for include corvids such as rooks, crows and jackdaws. The

sight and sound of a large corvid roost massing is a winter wildlife spectacle to be savoured. Whilst very different to the almost balletic displays that starling flocks put on before descending into reedbeds, it is still a wonderful experience not to be missed. The best time to track down bird roosts is about an hour before sunset - look out for small flocks of birds all heading in the same direction towards safe roost spots. A good place to head is our Besthorpe Nature Reserve west of Newark, between the villages of Collingham and Besthorpe – where the island in the main lake –Mons Pool, is home to a sizable roost.

In many ways, winter is the best time of year to watch ducks, geese and swans. Firstly, Winter sees our highest numbers of birds present and the males, or drakes can be seen in their brightest plumage.

Christmas Contact DisputesArranging Christmas Contact as a Separated Parent

Hannah Bridgwood, Legal Director in our expert Family Team, gives some tips for avoiding disputes.

Christmas is a time for family, but for separated parents, agreeing festive contact arrangements can be one of the most stressful challenges of the year. Disputes often arise when expectations clash, but with early planning and a clear understanding of the legal framework, you can avoid unnecessary conflict and ensure your children enjoy the holiday season.

At Nelsons we regularly advise parents who are struggling to agree on Christmas contact arrangements in the weeks leading up to the main event. Hannah Bridgwood, Legal Director in our expert Family Team, gives some tips for avoiding disputes.

The Legal Framework

In England and Wales, child arrangements are governed by Section 8 of the Children Act 1989, which empowers the court to make Child Arrangements Orders. These orders set out where a child lives and when they spend time with each parent, including holidays such as Christmas.

If you already have an order, review it early to confirm what is specified for the festive period. If no order exists, parents are encouraged to agree arrangements amicably and collaboratively, always prioritising the child’s welfare which is also the Family Court’s paramount consideration.

Why Early Planning Matters

Leaving discussions until December is a recipe for stress. Start planning at least 6–8 weeks in advance to allow time for negotiation and, if necessary, mediation. Early communication helps manage expectations and avoids lastminute disputes that could negatively overshadow the holiday.

Tips for Avoiding Disputes

Be flexible: Consider alternating Christmas Day each year or splitting the holiday period into blocks. Put children first: Avoid arrangements that involve excessive travel or disrupt routines, ensure they have good quality

time with each parent and do not argue in front of them.

Use technology: Parenting apps or written plans can help maintain clarity and reduce misunderstandings.

Put everything in writing: to avoid misunderstandings.

Use virtual contact: If one parent cannot see the child in person, agree on video calls for special moments.

When a Court Order May Be Needed

If parents cannot agree, or if one parent is being denied contact, a court order may be necessary. Before applying, most parents must attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) unless exemptions apply (e.g. domestic abuse or urgency). The court will only make an order if it is better for the child than making no order at all and expects parents to cooperate and collaborate as much as possible before involving the Court. Also bear in mind that if an application needs to be issued at Court, if it is made in November or early December it is unlikely you will get a hearing listed before Christmas.

If you need to make an application to Court, What Will the Court Consider?

When deciding Christmas contact, the court applies the Welfare Checklist under Section 1(3) of the Children Act 1989, which includes:

• The child’s wishes and feelings (considered in light of age and understanding).

• Physical, emotional, and educational needs.

• The likely effect of any change in circumstances.

• The child’s age, sex, background, and characteristics.

• Any harm the child has suffered or is at risk of suffering.

The overriding principle is always the child’s welfare and the Court tends to favour arrangements that minimise disruption and promote stability, while ensuring meaningful time with both parents.

If you are struggling to agree Christmas contact or need advice on Child Arrangements Orders, contact Hannah Bridgwood, Legal Director and Family Law Solicitor at Nelsons, on 0115 958 6262 for expert guidance tailored to your circumstances. Early advice can help you avoid conflict and ensure a joyful festive season for your children.

AN AMAZING AND UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

The 2025 Lights of Abraham will feature new glittering archways, interactive stepping stones, a neon forest, giant illuminated creatures including majestic swans, and colourful surprises round every corner along a trail that can take over an hour to complete.

Rupert Pugh, Development Director at the Heights, explains: “Last year’s winter trail was very popular, so this year we wanted to make sure that returning, as well as new guests have plenty of new features to enjoy. It’s going to be a stunning display. Once the park closes for the main season on November 2nd, the team will set to work installing tens of thousands of lights, illuminated figures and festive decorations. We’re aiming to be even more spectacular than last year”.

The famous Vista bar and Treetops Café will be open for festive tipples alongside hot snacks and delicious cakes and Christmas treats. Firepits will also be installed outside to toast marshmallows and warm up a little.

Guests will arrive via the festoon-lit riverside walkway before boarding cable cars to take a flight across the valley and up through an avenue of colour to the summit. Once at the top, the trail winds along a circular tarmac pathway past historic structures, through woodlands and across raised boardwalks. The trail is pushchair friendly, but dogs are not allowed due to the salt used to maintain the pathways in icy conditions.

Following the huge success of last year’s winter lights trail, Derbyshire’s awardwinning visitor attraction, The Heights of Abraham, has announced that the 2025 “Lights of Abraham” will shine from November 21st.

The historic estate will close the main season exhibitions and attractions on November 2nd before transforming for the Winter Trail, which opens to the public on Friday 21st November. The Lights of Abraham then shine on selected nights until December 30th excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Tickets have been on sale for a few weeks now, and popular dates and times are already selling out. Tickets start at just £16 for children aged 4 to 15 years. Under 4’s are admitted free, and adult tickets cost £22. Tickets can be obtained from the official website Open from 4.00pm to 8pm, Friday 21st November to Tuesday 30th December. The theatre was buzzing with excitement as members of the press and special guests including the Mayor gathered to meet the cast and representatives of UK Productions, whilst getting a sneak peek at the magic in store this Christmas.

The venue was transformed into a fairytale photo backdrop, complete with a sequin shimmer wall and a stunning apple-shaped balloon installation from Lighting and Balloon Decor, perfectly setting the scene for interviews and photographs by Elizabeth Orridge Photography. A green screen provided by Linney gave the cast the chance to film dynamic promotional content, offering a glimpse of the festive spectacle to come. Guests were also treated to a beautiful buffet spread by The Bakers Shop, based on Hermitage Lane -- - adding an extra touch of local flavour to the celebrations.

And the fun didn’t stop inside! The cast spilled out onto the street, causing joyful chaos outside the venue as they interacted with theatre customers, passers-by and even bus drivers and passengers, encouraging everyone to snap up their tickets soon for what promises to be a magical festive season.

Headlining the cast is beloved CBeebies star Katrina Bryan (Nina and the Neurons, Molly & Mack) as the deliciously wicked Evil Queen. Katrina shared her excitement:

Ben Harlow makes a triumphant return as the outrageously fabulous Dame Dilly Donut, promising even more glitter, giggles, and glamour than ever before.

“I am so delighted to be returning to the Palace Theatre. We had a blast last year, didn't we? This year Dame Dilly Donut will be just as outrageous. Snow White will have music, dancing and laughs a go go… Mansfield, let’s party!”

Also returning is audience favourite Adam Moss as the lovable Muddles, bringing his signature mischief and high-

energy humour to the stage. They are joined by Joseph Dockree (Mrs Doubtfire, Mary Poppins, Cabaret) as the dashing Prince Fredrick, and Emilie du Leslay (Starlight Express, Wind in the Willows, Les Misérables) as the enchanting Snow White, both of whom shone during the day with their outstanding talent and personalities.

Festive Favourites M&M’s Treats

and a Whole Lot of Christmas Cheer at The Arc Cinema

There’s nothing quite like Christmas at the cinema — the smell of popcorn in the foyer, the buzz of excitement in the air, and the warm glow of festive favourites lighting up the big screen. This December, The Arc Cinema invites you to relive the magic with its much-loved Christmas Classics season, offering a perfect mix of nostalgia, family time, and a few sweet surprises.

Every weekend in the lead-up to Christmas, The Arc will be screening some of the most iconic seasonal films of all time — and tickets are just £5 per person. Whether you're introducing the next generation to these classics, or simply treating yourself to a moment of joyful escapism, there's something for everyone in this year’s line-up.

Front and centre is Home Alone, which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2025. Still as sharp, chaotic, and heart-warming as ever, watching Kevin outwit the Wet Bandits on the big screen is a tradition not to be missed. Also returning is How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey’s unforgettable turn as the Christmashating, green-furred mischief-maker. This year marks the film’s 20th anniversary, and it’s never looked better than in full festive surround sound at your local cinema.

Families can also enjoy timeless favourites like Elf, The Polar Express,

The Muppet Christmas Carol, and more surprise additions to be announced throughout the season. Tickets for Christmas Eve screenings will go on sale soon — and with many shows expected to sell out, audiences are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

And what’s a festive film without a treat? This year, every Family Combo purchased during a Christmas Classics screening will include a free bag of M&M’s, courtesy of The Arc’s sweet new partnership with Mars Confectionery. It’s a small gesture with a big smile — because nothing goes better with Christmas movie magic than popcorn, a drink, and a little chocolate joy.

While festive favourites lead the charge in December, there's no shortage of blockbuster brilliance on offer too. Audiences can look forward to Wicked: For Good, the longawaited screen adaptation of the beloved musical phenomenon; Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, bringing jump scares and suspense back in a big way; and Avatar: Fire & Ash, James Cameron’s epic return to Pandora just in time for the holidays.

Whether you're escaping the cold, making new traditions, or indulging in a bit of festive magic, The Arc Cinema promises a warm welcome, great value, and the very best of the season on screen.

Make it a Christmas to remember — and don’t forget the M&M’s.

Getting your car looking like new

After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.

The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.

The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.

Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent corrosion.

Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a highquality, durable finish. Finally, a clear

coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.

Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.

Winter Lipcare

Why your lips feel dryer in Winter – beauty expert shares the real causes of chapped lips (and what to stop doing now)

As the temperature drops, beauty professionals are warning that many people will soon experience tight, flaking, or peeling lips — and even that strange white layer that sometimes appears inside the mouth.

According to Danielle Louise, a beauty expert listed on Fresha, the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform, most winter lip issues aren’t just caused by the cold — they’re made worse by our daily habits.

“Your lips don’t have oil glands, which means they can’t hydrate themselves. That’s why so many people get sore, cracked or flaky lips during winter — and why that white film or ‘layer of skin’ appears inside the mouth,” Danielle explains. “It’s often dead skin caused by dehydration, saliva irritation, or overuse of thick balms that sit on top instead of hydrating underneath.”

What Causes the White or Peeling Layer

That soft, white film inside the lips is more common than people realise. Danielle says it usually appears when:

You’re constantly licking or rubbing your lips, irritating the inner skin.

You’re using heavy or waxy balms that block moisture instead of helping it absorb.

You’ve over-exfoliated or applied multiple lip products without letting them sink in.

“It’s not harmful, but it’s a red flag that your lips are stripped of natural oils,” she adds. “Treat it early before it leads to painful cracks or inflammation.”

What to Do Instead

1. Hydrate from the inside out. Sip water throughout the day and use a hydrating serum or oil before your balm.

2. Layer products properly. Serum first to nourish, then a balm to lock it in.

3. Use SPF. UV rays can still cause dryness and pigmentation even in winter.

4. Sleep with a treatment mask. Overnight formulas with ceramides or squalane help repair the barrier while you rest.

What to Avoid

Danielle Louise, a beauty expert listed on Fresha says the biggest winter mistakes are often the simplest:

Licking your lips. It momentarily feels soothing but actually dries them out faster.

Overusing lip balm. Constant re-application prevents your lips from naturally retaining moisture.

Matte or long-wear lipsticks. These formulas can be too drying — especially without a serum base.

Exfoliating too often. Gentle once-a-week exfoliation is enough; too much can worsen peeling.

Using menthol or camphor balms. They can irritate already chapped lips and make dryness worse.

“If your lips sting when you apply balm, that’s your sign to stop and switch to something gentler,” Danielle advises. “Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and jojoba oil will do far more to heal and protect.”

The Takeaway

“Lip care should be part of your daily skincare routine,” Danielle concludes.

“Treat your lips like you would the skin on your face - hydrate, protect and avoid anything harsh. Within a few days, you’ll notice the difference.”

Every Se cond Counts: What to Do If Your Dog Is Choking

It can happen in an instant — your dog swallows a treat the wrong way, grabs a toy that’s too small, or gulps down something they shouldn’t.

Suddenly, they’re coughing, pawing at their mouth, or struggling to breathe. Knowing what to do in those critical moments could save your dog’s life. Here’s how to recognize the signs of choking and take quick, calm action until you can get to a vet.

Signs of Choking:

Pawing at mouth, gagging, retching, drooling, wheezing, coughing. If fully blocked, the dog may be silent, struggle to breathe, and turn blue. Collapse and death can occur if untreated.

Immediate Action:

Do not delay. If your dog can’t breathe, act fast. Do not muzzle. Restrain gently to protect yourself. Open the mouth and check for visible objects. Remove only if safe using tweezers - never finger sweep or push the object deeper.

Helping a Choking Dog:

Large objects may be dislodged by pressing thumbs under the jaw and pushing forward.

Small dogs: Lift by thighs and gently shake downward.

Large dogs: Lift hind legs (wheelbarrow style) or tilt head downward.

Heimlich Manoeuvre:

Standing dog: Wrap arms around belly, make a fist, and push up and forward behind rib cage.

Lying dog: Support back, squeeze abdomen upward and forward. Check mouth again and remove any dislodged object. If unsuccessful, go to the vet immediately.

Aftercare:

Even if the object is removed, a vet check is essential - internal damage may have occurred. Soft food may help during recovery; pain relief may be needed.

Suffocation/Strangulation:

Caused by plastic bags, cords, or strings. Cut away carefully.

Take a First Aid Course

How to drink less alcohol this Christmas

Alcohol can often be at the forefront of Christmas. This time of year, is for gathering and celebrating with your loved ones, which can often mean consuming too much alcohol.

Over 60% of drinkers in the UK overindulge during the festive period, consuming more alcohol than usual and having their first drink at an earlier time of day.

Alcohol consumption can have a negative effect on the heart and a few drinks can cause you to sleep poorly and be tired the next day, making you reach for unhealthy foods for a quick energy fix. In this month’s healthy tip, we share some ideas for how you can reduce your alcohol consumption this festive season and enter the new year feeling full of energy.

ALCOHOL-FREE DRINKS

With so many alcohol-free alternatives of your favourite big-name brands now available, why not use Christmas as a time to try them out? You may need to try a few to find one that you like, but often they taste very similar to their alcoholic counterpart.

Even if you don’t quit drinking entirely, you can reduce the amount of alcohol you consume by alternating your regular drink with an alcohol-free version.

MOCKTAILS

Mocktails or cocktails without alcohol

are a great way to enjoy a tasty drink this festive season. Bars and restaurants often have a wide range of mocktails for you to choose from, and they’re usually cheaper too. Be mindful when choosing your drink of how much sugar is in it, try to avoid those containing sugar syrups and fruit juices. Instead, opt for ones containing ingredients like mint, lime juice and soda water. A fancy glass makes all the difference, so why not buy some decorative cocktail vessels, and make some indulgent mocktails at home.

ENJOY ALCOHOL IN MODERATION

To look after our heart, we don’t have to stop drinking completely. The key is to enjoy alcohol in moderation and adopt other healthy lifestyle habits alongside this. The NHS recommends drinking no more than 12 units of alcohol per week, spread across three or more days which is the equivalent to six medium (175ml) glasses of wine or six pints of 4% beer. By not exceeding these recommendations, you may feel more able to be physically active and cook healthier meals.

A spoonful a day could be the simplest way to boost your immunity, soothe your skin, and support local bees.

Why Wellbeing Experts

Urge You to Buy Local Honey This Winter

As temperatures drop and the cold season sets in, wellbeing experts on Fresha, the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform, are encouraging people to turn to one of nature’s oldest remedies: local honey.

According to experts across Fresha’s wellness community, just a spoonful of raw local honey can offer a range of benefits that make it a winter essential, from easing sore throats to supporting gut health and even improving sleep quality.

“Local honey is one of those timeless ingredients that actually earns its place in your cupboard,” says one Fresha nutrition expert. “It’s natural, effective, and good for you—and your local ecosystem too.”

The Sweet Benefits of Local Honey

Helps Build Resistance to Local Allergens

Because local honey contains trace amounts of pollen from your area, small, regular exposure may help your body become less sensitive to it, easing seasonal allergy symptoms over time.

Soothes Sore Throats and Coughs

Honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help calm irritation and coat the throat, offering natural relief from winter coughs and dryness.

Supports the Gut and Immune System

Raw honey is a natural prebiotic, feeding healthy gut bacteria and supporting digestion, which plays a huge role in overall immunity.

Encourages Restful Sleep

A spoonful before bed can help stabilise blood sugar and support melatonin production, promoting deeper, more restful sleep.

Nourishes Skin from the Inside Out

Thanks to its antioxidant and antimicrobial qualities, honey helps protect cells and reduce inflammation, benefits that show up in clearer, calmer skin.

Supports Local Beekeepers and Sustainability

Buying honey locally helps sustain bee populations and supports biodiversity, meaning you’re doing something good for your body and your planet.

“There’s a reason honey has been used for thousands of years; it’s one of nature’s best multitaskers,” adds another Fresha wellbeing expert. “It can boost your mood, soothe your skin, sweeten your tea, and help the planet, all from one jar.”

How to Add It to Your Routine

• Stir a teaspoon into warm (not hot) water or herbal tea

• Drizzle over porridge, yoghurt, or toast

• Apply as a natural face mask (1 tsp honey + 1 tsp olive oil) for glowing skin

• Take a spoonful before bed for better sleep

Education

THE RIGHT SIXTH FORM FOR YOUR CHILD

Choosing the right sixth form is one of the most important decisions in a young person’s education. The two years spent in sixth form lay the foundation for university, apprenticeships, or future careers

Therefore, parents and students should take time to explore their options carefully. Below are some of the best ways to make an informed and confident choice.

Understand Your Child’s Goals and Learning Style

Every student is unique, with different academic strengths, ambitions, and learning preferences. Start by discussing your child’s future goals — do they plan to go to university, pursue a vocational path, or start an apprenticeship? For example, an academically focused student might thrive in a traditional sixth form attached to a secondary school, while someone interested in hands-on learning could benefit from a college offering BTECs or T Levels. It’s equally important to consider how your child learns best — some prefer structured classroom environments, while others excel with more independence and practical work.

Research Academic Performance and Reputation

Look into each sixth form’s academic results, such as A-level or BTEC outcomes and university progression rates. These can often be found on the school or college website, or through official government performance tables. However, remember that numbers don’t tell the whole story — good pastoral care, enrichment opportunities, and student support can be just as crucial to your child’s success and wellbeing.

Visit Open Days and Talk to Staff and Students

Attending open days or evenings is one

of the best ways to get a real sense of a sixth form’s environment. Encourage your child to talk directly to teachers and current students about course content, workload, and school culture. Notice how approachable staff are and whether students seem motivated and happy. These visits also allow you to explore the facilities, such as libraries, laboratories, and study spaces.

Consider Course Options and Flexibility

Ensure the sixth form offers the subjects your child wants to study and check the timetable flexibility. Some institutions allow a mix of A-levels and vocational courses, which can be ideal for students exploring multiple interests. It’s also worth checking whether additional opportunities — such as work placements, extracurricular clubs, or leadership programmes — are available to support personal development.

Evaluate Support and Wellbeing Services

Sixth form can be a challenging period, so pastoral care is essential. Investigate what kind of academic and emotional support is available. Mentoring schemes, counselling, and university or careers guidance can make a huge difference to your child’s experience.

In summary

The right sixth form should align with your child’s ambitions, interests, and personality. By combining research, personal visits, and open conversations, you can help your child choose an environment where they feel supported, inspired, and ready to achieve their full potential.

Trent College Sixth Form

Choosing the right Sixth Form is one of the most important decisions you and your child will make. At Trent College, this crucial stage of education is about much more than just grades - it’s about equipping young people with the confidence, independence and ambition to thrive at university and beyond.

Trent College Sixth Form is a highachieving, hardworking and collaborative community. With 24 A Level and BTEC options, plus the prestigious Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Trent College offers genuine choice. Academic outcomes speak for themselves - a 100% A Level pass rate, with 68% of all entries awarded A–B grades* in 2025 - a testament to exceptional teaching, small tutor groups, and dedicated pastoral care.

The modern Wortley Sixth Form Centre provides an inspiring environment modelled on university life. With bright study spaces, a resource centre, meeting rooms, and the welcoming Ivy Café, students benefit from independence within a supportive community.

Life at Trent goes far beyond the classroom. A wealth of co-curricular and leadership opportunities -from the Duke

of Edinburgh’s Award and Combined Cadet Force to Drama, Music, Sport and academic societies – all help to develop essential skills such as teamwork, resilience and self-discipline. Sixth Formers are encouraged to take on prefect and mentoring roles, becoming positive role models within the wider school.

The dedicated Careers & Higher Education Centre, accredited by the Careers Development Institute, provides expert one-to-one guidance on university applications, apprenticeships and gap year planning. Over the past four years, 337 students have gone on to university, including 144 at Russell Group institutions and 106 at top 20 UK universities.

For families seeking flexibility, boarding options (full, weekly or flexi boarding) offer additional academic support, structure and the chance to form lifelong friendships within a warm, inclusive community of international and UK students.

At Trent College, the Sixth Form years are an investment in more than academic results - they are a foundation for success, independence and personal growth that lasts long after school life ends. To find out more about Trent College Sixth Form visit www.trentschools.net or

Where winter looks Fairy-Tale perfect

There are cities that embrace winter and then there is Tallinn, a place where winter feels like it was made here. When the first snow settles across its medieval rooftops and the Old Town’s cobbled lanes glisten beneath lantern light, the capital of Estonia transforms into something close to a fairy tale. There is charm, yes...but also atmosphere, history, and a quiet kind of magic that feels almost too cinematic to be real.

Tallinn in winter is not just a destination. It’s an experience in texture: the crunch of snow underfoot, the glow of candles behind thick stone walls, the unmistakable scent of woodsmoke drifting above ancient towers. This is Europe as you imagine it in storybooks — except the food is better, the coffee is excellent, and the Wi-Fi never fails.

Some places rely on blue skies to sparkle. Tallinn doesn’t need them. Its medieval heart, a UNESCO World Heritage site becomes even more atmospheric when cloaked in winter’s pale light. The Old Town’s maze of winding streets and turreted fortifications looks lifted from a folktale, the kind told beside a fireplace while the wind howls outside.

Walking through the city in winter means discovering micro-scenes of pure wonder: a lone violinist playing beneath a streetlamp; a dusting of snow softening the sharp angles of Baltic Gothic architecture; the silhouette of St. Olaf’s Church rising into the grey-blue sky like something from a myth. There is no bad time to wander here, but winter brings an extra layer of enchantment — and a welcome quietness that summer crowds rarely allow.

Tallinn’s Old Town is the kind of place that forces you to slow your pace, partly because the cobbles are icy, but mostly because every corner looks like it deserves a moment. The city’s medieval heart glows in winter. Wooden stalls from seasonal markets (if you're visiting before Christmas) sell wool goods, gingerbread, and sweet-hot glögi. Afterwards, the square turns calm and

somehow even more magical.

Toompea Hill: Climb slowly, the streets curve and rise like a giant’s staircase — and you’ll reach viewpoints offering breathtaking winter panoramas. From Patkuli or Kohtuotsa platforms, the terracotta rooftops look powdered with sugar, chimneys puffing gentle threads of smoke into the cold air.

Duck into St. Catherine’s Passage, where medieval workshops glow warmly, or circle the 14th-century city walls, still watchful after seven centuries. In winter, these spaces feel intimate, as though Tallinn’s long history has drawn closer around you.

Tallinn excels at warmth - both literal and atmospheric. After the chill bites at your cheeks, the city invites you into its cafés, wine bars and restaurants like a familiar friend. Think candlelight, mismatched armchairs, thick rustic cakes and the low hum of locals chatting in Estonian. These are places where hours slip by easily — and where you’ll begin to understand why the city feels so soulful in winter.

There are few experiences more winterperfect than dining in a vaulted stone cellar warmed by candlelight. Expect NordicBaltic flavours reinvented: smoked fish, wild mushrooms, handmade dumplings, game meats, black bread still warm from the oven. Just beyond the Old Town walls lies Telliskivi Creative City, Tallinn’s bohemian, industrialchic quarter where street art, concept stores, coffee roasters and design studios thrive.

Winter doesn’t dampen the energy - if anything, it concentrates it indoors, where warm lights spill from galleries, and locals gather for craft beer, indie films and late-night conversations.

A short walk away, Kalamaja, once a fisherman’s district, is filled with colourful wooden houses and cosy cafés. Its relaxed, neighbourhood vibe offers a gentle contrast to he intensity of the medieval centre.

If winter has a perfect city, Tallinn might just be it.

Cosy Bedrooms

With the autumnal air greeting us in the mornings, it is clear that winter is not too far behind.

Plan ahead and create a cosy winter escape in your bedroom that will make it almost impossible to leave. Georgia Metcalfe, Founder & Creative Director of French Bedroom shares her top tips on how to update your bedroom for the season ahead and beyond.

Dark Woods

Dark wooden product sales at French Bedroom have seen an 84.65% increase from 2024 to 2025. Dark wooden furniture is now officially back en vogue, the rich and warm tones of dark wood creating a welcoming and cocooning atmosphere, ideal for the bedroom. When paired with clean lines and brass hardware, dark pieces create the perfect backdrop for showcasing exceptional accessories and embodying a sense of timeless elegance.

Faux Furs

French Bedroom had a 160% increase in searches on our website for “faux fur” for July 2025 vs August 2025. Faux fur is the perfect way to introduce warmth and comfort into your bedroom. Opt for a deep chocolate shade to complement dark wooden furniture or choose rich berry tones to layer in colour and texture. However you style it, faux fur brings a luxurious softness that makes chilly autumn

nights feel all the more inviting.

Rugs

Rugs can be a wonderful way to bring detail, pattern, or colour into your bedroom. A neutral rug featuring a pop of colour in keeping with the room’s colour palette can add a point of interest and unify the scheme, while a rug with a scalloped edge or a pretty pattern will add visual interest and detail to any minimal interior scheme.

“I always opt for something heavy on textural interest; a soft deep pile rug, patterned, plain or laser cut, will always feel luxurious and cosy underfoot, making it that little bit easier to jump out of bed on an autumnal morning”

Georgia Metcalfe, Founder & Creative Director, French Bedroom.

Lighting

Lighting is key to creating a bedroom that feels warm and inviting. Gentle bedside lamps or the flicker of scented candles will cast a soft glow, instantly adding cosiness and calm. Autumnal scents such as Warm Musk & Black Vanilla or Bourbon Sugar & Tobacco Leaf will infuse the space with a soothing richness, while bulbs in warm tones of amber or gold create a relaxing atmosphere that feels endlessly cosy.

The Perfect Christmas Tree

Nothing makes Christmas feel quite as magical as picking your real tree. It’s the centrepiece of the festive season, the backdrop for treasured family traditions, and the place where presents gather on Christmas Eve. For many, choosing a real tree together is the moment the celebrations truly begin.

According to Dobbies’ Plant Buyer, Nigel Lawton, a little preparation goes a long way when it comes to finding the perfect fit. Nigel explains: “Buying a real tree is such a special part of Christmas, but it’s worth planning ahead. Measure the height, width and depth of your space before you come into store, it avoids the disappointment of getting home and realising your tree is too big or too small. I always recommend bringing a tape measure with you, it makes the process stress-free.”

Real trees for every home

At Dobbies, there’s a real tree for every size and style of space, from grand family living rooms to compact apartments, starting from just £24.99. Nigel says: “If you’ve got tall ceilings or an open-plan area to fill, the Premium Nordmann Fir is a classic choice. The UK’s most popular Christmas tree for a reason, its lush, deep green needles and full conical shape give a traditional festive feel. The needles are softer too, so it’s ideal for homes with young children or pets.

“For narrower rooms, the Nordmann Fir Slim is a clever solution. You still get the elegance and height of a full-size tree, but it takes up much less floor space. It’s been specially grown for this shape, so it looks perfectly balanced in smaller living rooms.

“And if space is really limited, pot grown trees are brilliant. They’re compact but still make a real statement once decorated with baubles and lights. They’re perfect for balconies, porches or more compact homes, and the great thing is they can be planted outside after Christmas to enjoy for years to come.”

Scent and colour

Nigel adds that choosing by fragrance or foliage can really enhance your Christmas atmosphere: “If scent is important to you, I’d recommend the Fraser Fir. It has a wonderful citrus-like aroma that fills your home, and its blue-green tint gives it a striking look. It’s beautifully shaped, with a narrower silhouette than a Nordmann Fir, so it won’t dominate the room but still feels generous.

“For smaller spaces, the Blue Spruce is another great choice. Its silvery-blue needles bring a cool, festive elegance, and it gives off that classic Christmas tree smell. It’s particularly good if you’re looking for something compact but distinctive. These are also available as pot grown options, making them a sustainable long-term choice.”

Caring for your real tree

Once you’ve chosen your perfect tree, care is key to keeping it looking fresh throughout December. Nigel explains: “With a freshly cut tree, keep it outside in a sheltered area until you’re ready to bring it indoors. Trim around an inch from the base of the trunk and stand it in a bucket of water, that helps it draw up moisture and reduces needle drop.

“When you move it inside, place it in a stand that holds water and make sure the reservoir is topped up daily. Real trees can drink a surprising amount, sometimes up to a litre a day, so it’s worth checking regularly.

“Position your tree away from radiators or open fires, as heat will dry it out quickly. And when decorating, spread ornaments deeper into the branches for balance, not just on the outer tips. The Premium Nordmann Fir is excellent for holding lots of decorations thanks to its

full structure.” Dobbies also has a range of water-holding stands and tree care essentials available in-store, so customers can keep their tree looking vibrant for as long as possible.

Sustainability at the heart

Every Dobbies real tree is grown in partnership with Needlefresh, who are committed to sustainable practices.

Nigel says: “Our trees aren’t cut from wild forests. They’re grown on environmentallymanaged farms across Scotland, with each one nurtured for up to 12 years before it makes its way into our stores. Every tree is hand-pruned to create the perfect festive shape, and because the work is done by hand, the impact on wildlife is kept to a minimum.

“That means when you take a Dobbies tree home, you can feel confident it’s been grown with care.”

Nigel’s top tip

Nigel’s final piece of advice: “Choosing your Christmas tree should be one of the highlights of the festive season. Take your time, measure up carefully, and think about the look and scent you want in your home. With the right preparation and care, your tree will stay fresh and beautiful right through Christmas, and it will be the heart of your celebrations.”

Making More Room

Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.

Assess Feasibility

Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.

Plan Your Space

Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.

Structural Considerations

Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.

Lighting and Ventilation

Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Access

Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.

Utilities

Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.

Finishing Touches

Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.

Budget

Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

Professional Help

Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.

By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

HEATING UP THE HOME

Wood-burning stoves have long been seen as a staple in the living room, creating cosiness and warmth on chilly evenings. Today, these timeless features are finding new life in every corner of the home.

From conservatory stoves, to range cookers and those placed in garden rooms, homeowners are looking at new ways to integrate stoves into the home to

enhance comfort, heat and style. Joanna Humphreys, Fire and Stove Specialist at Direct Stoves explains why they are so popular.

Range Cookers

Range cookers bring country charm and modern efficiencies to the heart of the home, the kitchen. Perfect for those seeking a cottagecore-inspired aesthetic, these traditional stoves offer more than just warmth; they offer practical benefits too.

“Designed to meet the latest EcoDesign standards, range cookers provide cleaner, more efficient combustion, making them a more sustainable choice for contemporary living. Beyond their eco credentials, they offer a range of versatile functions, allowing you to cook on the hob or bake in the oven, while gently radiating heat throughout the kitchen.”

Conservatory Stoves

Conservatories are often light-filled spaces, but these can become under-utilised in winter due to the struggles of keeping them warm throughout the colder months. Adding a wood-burning stove can help to transform these spaces into a cosy sanctuary, perfect for hosting guests that can be used year-round.

“Due to their glass construction, conservatories can get really cold during the winter. A wood-burning stove offers an extremely efficient way of heating up your room when you need it. They also have the added benefit of producing the cosy atmosphere that only the flicker of real flames can offer.

When considering where you are going to fit your wood burner in your conservatory, bear in mind that the closer you fit this to your house, the easier it will be. This is because your stove flue will need to be supported; and the wall is a good place to do this. The flue can then be attached to the wall all the way up to the roof, where it can deposit fumes at a safe distance at your rooftop - this should be at least 1 metre above your house guttering.”

Outdoor Fireplaces

Outdoor stoves have redefined how we use our gardens, making entertaining more enjoyable during the colder months. By providing warmth and ambience, they extend the summer into autumn, allowing homeowners to make the most of their exterior spaces.

"Similar in construction to indoor fireplaces, outdoor fireplaces are typically made from materials such as pumice, brick, or mortar, and feature a chimney, firebox and hearth. They are usually installed on a stone, brick or concrete patio to ensure safety and longevity. More than just a heat source, they act as a stylish focal point for conversation and relaxation. Perfect for casual family gatherings or more formal occasions, it keeps guests comfortable and warm against a backdrop of crackling flames.”

GROWING YOUR BUSINESS IN NEWARK AND SHERWOOD

Newark and Sherwood is a district full of ambition and creativity. Situated at the crossroads of road and rail networks, and within a 1-hour 15-minute train ride from London, the district is an ideal place to locate and grow your business.

With an agenda focussed on sustainable growth, the District Council (NSDC) is passionate about providing the best service for local businesses and those interested in moving to the area.

Our Economic Growth team offers a package of support to help businesses access training, property and data. We offer a Grant Finder search service to identify funding options, and during 2025 we provided approximately £100,000 of grants to local businesses through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Using Government funding we have procured a business advisory service to assist businesses with advice and guidance on how to grow, set goals and build resilience. We also work with local businesses to create tailored retail campaigns aimed at boosting local spend, such as our recently launched Newark and Sherwood Gift Card.

Our programme of business support events includes workshops, 1-to-1 advice surgeries, and our Economic Growth Conference. The Conference takes place every October and offers a mix of

presentations, interactive sessions and networking to showcase local support, prompt discussions and promote recent developments.

We are now preparing our 2026 programme of events. As part of this we are hosting an interactive workshop on 26th February that will help local businesses discover how to harness AI to boost productivity and scale.

NSDC also works with education providers to ensure the future workforce has the skills that meet industry needs. Our Future First Expo links learners with employers to help them explore opportunities, with spots available for organisations to exhibit every November.

New investment is going into regeneration schemes in our towns, such as the creation of retail units and a public services hub in Ollerton to boost local connectivity. More investment is on the horizon with the announcement of the Pride in Place programme.

External schemes include the dualling of the A46 to ease journey times, and Middlebeck, a development adding 7,000 homes and employment floorspace south of Newark. Meanwhile, the Tritax Park logistics site offers opportunities for enterprises to join a growing regional logistics sector.

Up-to-date information on local developments can be found in our bimonthly business newsletter.

GROWING YOUR BUSINESS

Growing a business is an exciting journey, but it also comes with challenges that require clarity, strategy, and reliable guidance. Whether you are launching a startup or scaling an established company, the advice you follow can significantly influence your direction and long-term success. In a world filled with information, opinions, and ever-changing market conditions, seeking proper and correct advice becomes not only helpful, but essential.

One of the first steps in scaling any business is understanding your current position and defining where you want to go. This means taking a realistic look at your resources, strengths, weaknesses, and the opportunities available within your industry. Sound advice often begins with proper self-assessment. When you clearly understand what you have to offer and how you differ from competitors, you can make better strategic decisions. Advisors, mentors, or consultants can help you gain this clarity by providing objective insights and raising questions that you may overlook when too close to the day-today operations.

Another critical factor in business growth is developing a well-structured plan. While passion and ambition can get you started, growth requires focus, direction, and measurable goals. Experienced advisors can help you build strategies around marketing, operations, finance, and customer acquisition. They offer tested perspectives, allowing you to avoid common pitfalls and adopt practices that have proven effective for similar businesses. In many cases, the right advice can save you months—or even years—of trial and error.

Seeking proper advice also means turning to reliable sources. Not every opinion will be relevant, and not every expert understands your business model. Surround yourself with individuals who have actual experience in the areas you need help with. This may include industry mentors, financial advisors, legal professionals, or business coaches. Joining business communities, industry associations, or entrepreneurial networks can also expand your access to knowledgeable voices. Choosing the right advisors helps ensure that the guidance you receive is grounded in reality, not based on assumptions.

In addition to external advice, listening to your customers is one of the most valuable sources of insight. Customer feedback can guide your product development, pricing strategies, and marketing decisions. Understanding your audience’s needs helps you grow in a direction that matches demand rather than assumptions. Proper advice often comes from simply paying attention to the people who use your product or service every day.

It is also important to stay adaptable. The business world changes rapidly— technology evolves, trends shift, and competitors emerge. Growth-minded businesses consistently seek updated advice to remain relevant. Continuing education, professional development, and periodic consultations with experts help keep your strategies fresh and competitive. The willingness to learn and adjust is often what separates growing businesses from stagnant ones.

Finally, remember that the best advice is only useful if you act on it.

Implementation is key. Applying what you learn—whether it involves improving operations, redesigning your brand, or restructuring your financial approach— brings tangible results.

In short, growing your business requires vision, strategic planning, and the willingness to seek and apply proper, correct advice. With the right guidance and consistent effort, your business can move confidently toward long-term success.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

Care in thr Community

Emotional Wellbeing During the Festive Season

While December is often associated with connection and celebration, for many people it can also be a period of increased stress, fatigue, and emotional strain. The expectations surrounding the festive season, social commitments, financial pressures, or family dynamics can all affect psychological wellbeing. For those who have experienced bereavement, loneliness, or change, these effects can be particularly pronounced.

Research consistently shows that social isolation, disrupted routines, and reduced rest during this time of year can heighten symptoms of anxiety, low mood, and stress-related difficulties. Even positive events, such as gatherings and celebrations, can increase sensory and emotional demands, especially for those who are already managing high levels of stress or who are neurodivergent.

At The Purple House Clinic Nottingham, we recognise that the end of the year can bring complex

emotions. Some individuals may feel pressure to appear cheerful while privately experiencing exhaustion, sadness, or disconnection.

Acknowledging these feelings, rather than avoiding them, is a key step in maintaining emotional health.

Supporting Psychological Balance

Taking small, intentional steps to protect wellbeing can make a meaningful difference. These might include:

• Setting realistic expectations for the holiday period and recognising limits.

• Maintaining routines that support sleep, nutrition, and physical activity.

• Scheduling downtime between social commitments to allow for recovery.

• Connecting intentionally with people who provide understanding and emotional safety.

• For those managing more significant emotional challenges — such as anxiety, grief, or interpersonal difficulties — professional support can provide an opportunity to reflect, develop coping strategies, and regain a sense of control.

How We Can Help

At The Purple House Clinic Nottingham, our multidisciplinary team provides evidence-based psychological therapies and specialist assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. We offer a calm, confidential environment where individuals can explore difficulties and work towards improved emotional wellbeing.

The festive period can be both meaningful and demanding. By recognising its psychological impact and seeking appropriate support, individuals can foster resilience and move into the new year with greater balance and clarity.

Newark hospice nominated

Beaumond House Hospice Care in Newark was established in 1982 and has four bedrooms devoted to caring for patients at the end of their lives, alongside a day therapy service, and a Hospice at Home service.

Catheryn Lowe who worked for Beaumond House for 10 years nominated the charity in the national competition:“The service offered by Beaumond House is phenomenal. In my role, I would speak with families that the team had supported and they’d say Beaumond House was a lifeline, giving supported access to their loved ones at a time when every moment matters. It’s a very emotional time and there is only one chance to get it right.

“Beaumond House is a patient centred service, with a higher ratio of nurses to patients than in a hospital. The Hospice at Home service means people can have the end of their life at home, spending those invaluable last days where they want to be. This often means fewer journeys across the country and less anxiety. Wherever possible, every request and every choice is supported by Beaumond House.

Sherwood Gift Card would be used to make patients’ stays more comfortable. This could include items such as extra towels and bed linen to make their stay as comfortable as possible, or gifts to relieve anxiety and improve mental wellbeing. The team supports local businesses wherever possible and using the gift card to enhance patient care from within our local community would be a wonderful thing.”

The person or organisation with the most nominations in The BIG Christmas Giveback will win a £1,000 Town & City Gift Card—such as the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card—with one nominator also winning a £500 gift card.

Simon Machin, director of income generation at Beaumond House said: “We’re incredibly grateful for the nomination in The BIG Christmas Giveback. Being nominated is a wonderful reminder of the impact our care and support provides. We’re honoured to be part of such a caring and supportive community.

restaurants, attractions, salons and services.

Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Growth at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Beaumond House is a shining light in our community, providing a much needed, valued and appreciated service for patients at the end of their lives and their families. It would be wonderful to see Beaumond House win this national competition, using the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card to support patients at a critical time.”

The Newark and Sherwood Gift Card is part of the award winning Town & City Gift Card concept from fintech Miconex. Over 20,000 local businesses are part of Miconex’s local gift card programs around the world with over £45m spent locally through the cards.

“The kind words and recognition of our compassionate, patient-centred care mean so much to us. If we were to win a Newark and Sherwood Gift Card, every penny could help the hospice to provide palliative care to patients and families across Newark and Sherwood.”

The Newark and Sherwood Gift Card is also centred on making a positive difference locally, providing a local option for gifts, rewards and incentives. I encourage everyone to nominate today, and consider using the Newark & Sherwood Gift Card to support local businesses.” A Newark hospice that provides a home from home for end-of-life care has been nominated in a national competition that aims to

“Located in an old Victorian Building, Beaumond House is very homely and has a sense of calm, with the warmth of the team shining through. People walk through the big blue door and are immediately welcomed with compassion. End of life care isn’t something many of us think about until we or a loved one is facing the end of their lives. And at a time when stress and anxiety is high, Beaumond House is there to support patients and their families.

“If we won The BIG Christmas Giveback, the Newark and

The Newark and Sherwood Gift Card launched in 2025 and can be spent with over 90 local businesses, including shops,

Colin Munro is the CEO of Miconex and said: “The nomination for Beaumond House is exactly the type of nomination we’re looking for in The BIG Christmas Giveback, so we can shine a light on the people and organisations making a positive difference locally.

Dementia Support

Top tips and advice to support people with dementia through autumn and winter

As the days grow shorter and colder, Alzheimer’s Society is reminding people across the East Midlands to check in on loved ones, friends and neighbours living with dementia. Angelo Makri, Senior Knowledge Officer for Wellbeing at Alzheimer’s Society, shares useful tips to help keep people living with dementia safe and well during Autumn and Winter.

Cold Weather Support

Dress warmly – Layers are key. Cotton, wool or fleece materials are best for maintaining body heat.

Keep rooms warm – Use heating, draught-proofing and thermal curtains to maintain a steady temperature.

Encourage movement – Gentle activity such as stretching, walking around the house, or even wiggling toes helps boost circulation.

Make the most of light – Natural light supports mood and helps reduce confusion linked to shorter days. Try to ensure there is enough light in the home especially as it starts getting dark earlier.

Stick to a routine – Consistency and familiarity are important for people with dementia and may help avoid confusion or distress.

Be careful outdoors – Perception issues mean wet or icy pavements may not be easily recognised. Support the person to go outside and go with them if possible.

Eat and drink regularly – Cold weather uses extra energy and dehydration can creep in unnoticed. Warm meals and drinks provide comfort and health benefits.

Get a benefits check – The person may be eligible for winter fuel payments, cold weather payments or a warm home discount.

Seasonal Activities to Spark Joy

Autumn and winter can also be rich with opportunities to create positive experiences through the senses. Simple seasonal activities can boost wellbeing, spark memories, and provide comfort:

Bake a seasonal dish – The scent of baking can be soothing and familiar. Preparing a seasonal dish such as apple crumble, mince pies or spiced soup allows your loved one to enjoy the smells of autumn and winter cooking.

Bring nature indoors – Collect autumn leaves, conkers, pinecones or acorns during a walk and bring them home. Touching, smelling and seeing these natural items can stimulate the senses and prompt conversation about past autumns and winters.

Homemade autumn and winter potpourri Simmer cinnamon sticks, cloves, citrus peelings and apple slices on the hob to fill the home with comforting seasonal aromas. This can create a warm, calming atmosphere which the person may find reassuring.

Support and Advice

There are almost one million people living with dementia in the UK today, with almost 75,000 of those in the East Midlands, and winter can be a worrying time for families and carers.

Angelo says: “Knowing how to best support someone with dementia during the colder months, by checking in on them and following these tips, helps to make sure they are comfortable, safe and able to stay as independent as possible.

Every action, whether it’s checking in on a neighbour, donating or supporting research, adds up. It will take a society to beat dementia.

Please get involved by visiting alzheimersociety. org.uk/joinus or call the Dementia Support Line on 0333 150 3456.

Hollygate Memorial woodlands

A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services.

Since then, we have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance our service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.

We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.

We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and

spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.

There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.

There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family

plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.

Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) Charity has submitted a planning application for a site in Edwalton, Nottingham.

Located just south of the A52/A606 roundabout at Edwalton, the site has been pledged as a gift to the charity by local benefactor Mr. Brian Wells, subject to securing planning permission. It comes after Tollerton Airfield was sold for development, meaning it will no longer serve as a base for LNAA’s Nottingham Critical Care Car or as a landing site for the helicopter.

The move would potentially provide critical infrastructure to support LNAA’s life-saving operations, which currently responds to an average four missions a day.

Last year, LNAA responded to 1,724 incidents – and demand is rising. On average, there are 1.5 ‘missed missions’ each day because the LNAA crew are already on another emergency call. Many of these occur in Nottinghamshire, underlining the urgent need for an LNAA base there.

The proposed location would provide rapid access to Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) just six miles away. Proximity to the A52 ensures swift onward patient transfer by road as QMC does not have a helipad.

HELP BRING NOTTINGHAM’S SAFE BUS TO LIFE

Crowdfunding campaign

A new community project led by It’s in Nottingham - the city’s Business Improvement District (BID) is calling on local businesses and residents to help bring a new Nottingham Safe Bus to life - a mobile welfare and first aid hub that will support people in Nottingham’s city centre on busy nights out.

base is about saving more lives. We are humbled by the generosity of Mr. Wells, and we know our supporters will be with us every step of the way should we be successful in our bid for planning permission.”

LNAA is not government or NHS funded and relies entirely on charitable donations. The proposed development is therefore a rare opportunity, enabled by the wonderfully generous pledged donation of land.

Mr Wells said: "The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is a charity close to my heart and one that I have been involved with for many years. I am delighted to be able to support this life saving service with the gift of land which has the potential to help the charity realise its vision of being by the side of more patients. I hope that this will inspire others to donate and help save lives because anyone of us could need this service, at any time."

How you can help:

• Donate at www. ambucopter.org.uk/ donate

• Organise a fundraising event in your community

• Volunteer with LNAA

The initiative aims to refurbish a decommissioned bus, generously donated by Nottingham City Transport, into a fully equipped space where trained welfare officers, volunteers, and medical staff can offer first aid, support, and a safe place to rest.

Once complete, the Nottingham Safe Bus will operate in the city centre during weekends and major events, providing practical help for those who are injured, lost, or vulnerable - easing pressure on local emergency services and hospitals.

Every weekend, thousands of people visit Nottingham’s bars, clubs, and restaurantsand while the city’s night-time economy is thriving, it also brings challenges for police and welfare teams.

A short pilot project with St John Ambulance in Christmas 2024 demonstrated the potential impact of having a centralised welfare point.

Over just seven nights:

• 102 people were supported by on-site welfare staff

• 73 cases were managed on location without needing hospital treatment

• Saving an estimated £30,000–£50,000 in NHS costs in a single week

Scaled up year-round, a permanent Safe Bus could save £1.6–£2.7 million annually in avoided ambulance and A&E costs.

The Safe Bus project is being delivered in partnership with:

• Nottingham City Council –providing the bus’s city-centre base

• Nottingham City Transport –donating the bus

• trentbarton – supporting MOTs, driver training, and servicing

• Nottingham Street Pastors –providing on-board welfare support

• University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University

During the day, the bus will also serve as a base for community health campaigns, student outreach, and city events — ensuring it benefits all parts of the community.

The team is now asking for public and business support through a crowdfunding campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to transform the donated vehicle into a fully equipped Safe Bus.

Funds will cover:

• Interior refit and safetycompliant layout

• On-board medical area with sink, bed, and running water

• Solar panels and sustainable power supply

• Accessibility improvements, heating, lighting, and welfare seating

Keep Warm and Well This Winter

Keeping warm in winter is important as we get older as cold weather and winter bugs can affect us more than they used to. Winter weather can also stop us from getting out and about sometimes. But there are things you can do to stay warm and well and prepare yourself and your home for the winter period.

Keep moving

A little bit of activity now and then is a great way to help you keep warm, as well as help you maintain strength and mobility. So try not to sit still for more than an hour at a time. If walking is difficult, you can do chair-based exercises while sitting or holding on to the back of a chair. Even moving your arms and legs and wiggling your toes can help you keep warm and well. There's no onesize-fits-all approach when it comes to keeping moving, so it's important you do something that feels right – and safe – for you.

Eat well

It can sometimes be difficult to keep up the motivation to prepare meals. But it's good to try and keep to a routine where you can. Warming foods, like soup and stews, and hot drinks like tea can help you to keep warm, so try to have at least one hot meal a day and as many hot drinks as you can. Try to have a range of foods in your diet and try to eat fruit and vegetables each day – frozen and tinned vegetables can be just as good as fresh. It's also a good idea to keep your cupboards stocked with some basics just in case you can't get out to the shops – whether due to illness or bad weather.

Consider taking a vitamin D supplement

We need vitamin D for healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Our bodies create it from sunlight but, during the winter months, the sun isn’t strong enough and it’s difficult to get the amount we need from our diet. You might want to speak to your doctor about taking a vitamin D supplement for a boost over winter.

Get your winter vaccinations

Respiratory viruses are more widespread in winter, so it's especially important to get your vaccinations. Vaccinations are particularly important this winter as flu and coronavirus levels are expected to rise. You're entitled to a free flu jab from the doctor or pharmacist if you:

• a re aged 65 or over

• care for someone, such as a friend or family member

• a re a frontline worker in health or social care

• a re under 65 and have a serious longterm health condition

• l ive in the same house as someone who is immunocompromised

• a re in long-stay residential care.

When you get your flu jab, check if you're also eligible for the pneumo vaccine, which helps protect you from pneumonia, and the Shingles vaccine.

Make sure your home is warm enough

Try to heat your home to a steady and comfortable temperature throughout the day in the rooms you use most, such as the living room and bedroom – usually around 18°C (64°F) is ideal. If there are rooms you don't use, like a spare bedroom, turn off the radiators in that room and close the doors. This will help you save on energy costs while keeping warm in winter.

During the day, keeping curtains open can help allow warmth into your home. At dusk, close all the curtains and keep the windows closed to block out draughts and help keep heat in when the weather's at its coldest. It can also help to keep doors closed around your home to stop draughts. If you have wood or laminate floors, you may want to consider putting rugs down to better insulate your home.

Use a hot water bottle

Using hot water bottles is a cost-effective way to stay warm, especially if you put them under blankets or duvets to keep you warm while you're sleeping. Make sure to never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket.

Stop the spread of germs

As well as getting vaccinated, there are some other simple measures we can take to reduce the spread of illness. Regularly washing your hands with soap and water is one of the best ways to stop

germs from spreading. You can also:

• catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue

• choose to wear a face covering in busy indoor spaces, like shops

• l eave windows ajar to let fresh air circulate when meeting people indoors

• avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

It's a good idea to keep some hand santiser with you when you're out and about in case you can't access a sink or bathroom to wash your hands.

Wrap up well

Wrapping up well, using jumpers, hats, scarves and blankets can help you stay warm over the colder months. Wearing several thin layers will keep you warmer than wearing one

and about. Think about stocking up on cold and sore throat remedies, as well as food, in case it's harder to leave the house. Your pharmacist can give you advice on what might help if you're feeling under the weather. You might also want to get big bottle of water in case the water supply is interrupted.

Take extra care outside when the ground is slippery

It's important to be careful when out and about. In the autumn, fallen leaves and rain can make the ground very slippery. And in winter, ice and slow can seriously increase your risk of falls. You might find that shoes with non-slip soles or with a good grip are helpful. Consider keeping salt and sand mixture handy to grit paths. You could ask your neighbours for help to clear paths or driveways in bad weather.

Look out for other people

There are lots of simple, practical things we can do to look after each other over the winter period. Encourage the older people you know to look after their health – one of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure they've had their free flu jab and coronavirus booster vaccine.

Try to make time for relatives, friends and neighbours. Darker nights and cold weather can make it harder for people to get out and about and we can all end up feeling lonely or out of sorts. Calling for a chat, popping in for a cuppa or even sending a card in the post can really help let someone know you're thinking about them. When it's wet or icy outside, it's easier to slip. You could help your neighbours get out and about safely by helping them keep their paths and driveways clear and salting their steps and slopes.

thick layer, as layers trap warm air between them. If you're heading out, make sure you take some extra layers – even if you don’t need them immediately. It's a good idea to be prepared because the temperature can drop significantly when the sun goes down. Wear warm nightwear, thick socks and slippers Cold temperatures can disrupt our sleep. Wearing warm nightwear, as well as thick socks and slippers, can help you stay warm overnight.
