DONOVAN

JASON DONOVAN HAS RETURNED TO ONE OF HIS MOST FAMOUS ROLES: PLAYING FRANK-N-FURTER IN RICHARD O’BRIEN’S ANARCHIC MUSICAL, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW SO, THE QUESTION HAS TO BE: WHY?

by Eugene Hyland

Photo

“In a nutshell,” he says, “I’m a fan. I love the show; I love the music; I love the character. I was touring my own show about five years ago and included ‘Sweet Transvestite’ from Rocky as a key moment in my musical career. It went down a storm.”

He subsequently emailed producer Howard Panter saying that he’d read there was to be a 50th anniversary production of Rocky Horror and he’d love to be involved. And so it came to pass: first in Sydney and Melbourne and now via an extensive UK tour.

The Rocky Horror Show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O'Brien. A humorous tribute to various B movies associated with the science fiction and horror genres from the 1930s to the early 1960s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged, cleancut couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter, unveiling his new creation, Rocky, a Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially-made, fully-grown, physically perfect muscle man complete with blond hair and a tan.

The show was produced and directed by Jim Sharman. The original London production premièred at the Royal Court Theatre (Upstairs) on 19 June 1973. It later moved to several other locations in London and closed on 13 September 1980. The show ran for a total of 2,960 performances. On the 50th anniversary of the musical in 2023, it is said the production had been performed in 20 different languages and seen by 30 million people globally.

He's the same performer but how does Jason feel about tackling the role over 25 years later? “I don’t feel uncomfortable, playing Frank at 56 – and, of course, I have personal reasons for being grateful to the show.”

The stage manager on that late 90s touring production was a young woman called Angela Malloch. “I’d be backstage waiting to go on,” recalls Jason, “and I’d get chatting to Ange.” The blossoming friendship turned into romance but the relationship hit the buffers.

Shortly afterwards, Angela found out she was pregnant. It was ultimatum time. “If the relationship had any chance of working, she told me, and if I was going to have any involvement in the life of our child, I would have to give up the self-indulgent hedonistic lifestyle of the 90s and take greater control of my life. And I did.

It's something that happened gradually rather than immediately. “You either seize your opportunities or you don’t”. But, in the end, he says, you’ve got to want to change. “Elton John said it and it’s true: nobody can do it for you.”

It was a major turning point in his life and the beginning of a relationship – the couple finally married in 2008 –that has stood him in good stead from that day to this. The couple have three children: Jemma is 25 and an actress; 24-year-old Zac is a TV producer in Australia and Molly, 14, is still at school.

In the meantime, their father has graduated from small-screen fame as Scott in the longrunning Australian soap, Neighbours, to chart-topping pop stardom and now, among much else, as a stalwart of musical and straight theatre in a diverse number of productions.

He played Joseph in the original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (returning as Pharaoh in the 2019 revival and subsequently on tour). He was in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as eccentric inventor

Caractacus Potts, has had two stabs at playing drag artist Mitzi in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, he also played music mogul Sam Phillips in Million Dollar Quartet, the demon barber of Fleet Street himself in Sweeney Todd and Lionel Logue in The King’s Speech.

But it is Dr Frank-N-Furter who occupies a special place in his heart. “One of the reasons I love Rocky is because it’s a short show.” And nor is he joking. “It says everything it needs to say and nothing more. There’s no unnecessary padding. It means nobody gets bored and you leave them wanting more.”

Fine but, hand on heart, what’s it like climbing into those fishnet stockings and high heels seven times a week? “In many ways, very easy, I put on the costume and there’s Frank all over again. I’m in touch with my feminine side but I come from a masculine sensibility. The character embraces both sides of me: a strength and a vulnerability as well as danger and denial.

“Look, I come to the role as an actor. I always dreamed of fronting a rock band and this is about as close as I’ve got. When I put on those high heels, I become that rock ‘n’ roll star. It makes me feel powerful, tall, in charge.

“And audiences love it. As I look out from the stage, I see a beautiful landscape of people wearing outrageous costumes. It’s not hard to see why: in many ways, Rocky is panto for adults. The costumes are just as much a part of the show as the characters and the music.”

All right but what about the wear and tear on his back? He laughs. “I spend a lot more time in physio these days, something I’ve put in as an appendix in my contract! I’m in my mid-50s. I’m aware of having to look after myself.”

With regular exercise? “Yes, but not obsessively so. Mental health and physical fitness go hand-in-hand for me. This life is a long journey, you hope. My dad gave me the tool of a good work ethic linked to physical activity.

“I don’t go to the gym: I’m not interested in lifting weights. But I swim. I ride my bike. I stretch. I steam. I do those things more or less on a daily basis. In fact, they’ve become a borderline addiction. And, of course, doing the show is a work-out in itself: I put a lot of energy into my performance.”

He’s also sensible about his eating regime. “Within reason but then I’m lucky. I seem to burn a lot of fat naturally. Trouble is, you get to my age and you’re in sniper’s alley: increasingly, you’re dodging a lot of bullets. There’s a bit of arthritis here, deteriorating eyesight there. If I take off my glasses, I can’t see whether the bottle contains shampoo or conditioner!” he laughs.

“Although my vocals were never my strongest point back in the day, since Joseph, I have worked really hard and through 30 years of strengthening my vocal cords – they’re a muscle like anything else – I’ve become a better singer. Rocky now plays to my strengths, less musical theatre, more edgy, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. More me really!”

Touring at any age is demanding and Jason is about to embark on a fairly punishing schedule. He’ll be performing in Manchester, Leeds, Swansea, Wimbledon, Norwich, Nottingham and Dublin. He makes light of it. “On tour, I wake up a little later; there are no domestic chores to tackle – no trimming the ivy or doing the washing. And I’m a seasoned professional when it comes to locating any M&S or Waitrose.

“I do try and get home at weekends, though, and not agree to more than three or four weeks away at a stretch. But if I want to play Frank – and I do – I’ve got to travel. It comes with the territory. What else are you doing? “I’ve got my Doin’ Fine Encore tour –across the UK from February to March 2026. It’s a greatest hits show, a celebration of 35 years of work.”

But for now his focus is bringing Frank-N-Furter back to life, both for his own satisfaction and that of his inexhaustible audience. “I’ve reached a point of great contentment,” says Jason. “As long as I have my family and my health, as long as I have a good life/work balance, I’m happy. I like to think I work to live, not the other way around.”

What Happens to Inheritance on Divorce?

Emma Davies, Partner & Solicitor at Nelsons explains the complex process of dividing finances when a marriage ends, especially when inheritances are involved. Many people assume that inheritance automatically stays with the person who received it. However, this is not always the case.

The Starting Point

In divorce, the court’s first consideration is the needs of both parties and any children. Whilst inheritance is often treated as separate from matrimonial assets, this depends on how it has been treated during the marriage and whether the parties’ needs can be met without using it.

Ringfencing Inheritance

If an inheritance has been kept separate, for example, in a personal savings account or property held solely in the recipient’s name, it may be easier to argue it should be excluded from the matrimonial pot so long as there are sufficient “matrimonial” assets to meet both spouses’ needs. However, if the asset has been mingled with marital property (such as using an inheritance to buy a family home, paying off mortgages, or using it for family expenses), it can become harder to claim it as “non-matrimonial”

Needs Trump

Everything

Even if an asset is considered nonmatrimonial, the court can still order that it be taken into consideration if that is necessary to meet the housing and income needs of both spouses and any children. For example, if one spouse has received a substantial inheritance and the other assets are limited, the court may consider it fair that the parties use some of the inherited assets to meet their needs.

How to Protect Inheritance on Divorce

Prenuptial or Postnuptial Agreements: These agreements can set out how inheritance should be treated on divorce. Whilst such agreements are not legally binding, they can be upheld by the court if entered into correctly.

Keeping Assets Separate: Avoid mixing inherited assets with joint funds where possible.

Clear Evidence: Keep documentation showing the source of the inheritance and

how it was used. This can help prove that the inheritance should be considered non-matrimonial.

In Summary

The court generally will not invade inherited property unless there are insufficient assets to meet the parties’ needs. It is important to remember that a court has a wide discretion when it comes to considering how inheritance should be treated on divorce, and each case will be determined depending on its facts.

East Midlands Airport marks its 60th anniversary

Sixty years of aviation history in the East Midlands took off in 1965, when the Airport (EMA) began operating flights for the first time.

Over its six decades EMA has played a significant role not only as a gateway to holidays for 130 million people, but as a major cargo hub that helps to drive key parts of the local economy.

In its first year of operation there were only 114,888 passengers and just 358 tonnes of cargo. Sixty years later, after terminal and runway expansions, a new air traffic control tower and many developments in aviation, more than 4m passengers fly through EMA every year and a one thousand-fold increase in cargo volumes make it the number one express freight air hub in the UK. EMA now contributes £1.6bn to the national economy and supports more than 17,000 jobs across the UK.

The county and city councils of Derbyshire, Derby, Leicestershire, Leicester, Nottinghamshire and Nottingham bought the airfield in 1963 for £37,500, having chosen the site of the old wartime RAF Castle Donington as a replacement for Burnaston Aerodrome near Derby which only had a grass runway.

It took £1,375,000 and 13 months to develop, with its location at the heart of the country and next to the yet-to-bebuilt M1 extension giving it a strategic edge which it continues to benefit from today.

A full timeline of EMA’s history is available here: www. eastmidlandsairport.com/about-us/ east-midlands-airport-and-mag/ourhistory

Celebratory Aeropark Open Weekend and Red Arrows

East Midlands Airport opened for operations on April 2 1965 and was given an official royal opening on 21 July of that year by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh who unveiled a plaque still on display in the terminal.

To mark the diamond anniversary of that occasion, an extended weekend of family fun days is to take place on July 19, 20 and 21 at the East Midlands Aeropark. Crowds are set to be treated to flypasts by the Red Arrows and the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight unit.

The Aeropark boasts a sizeable collection of heritage aircraft, some of which will be opened up for visitors for the fun

There will be games, food stalls, community stalls, a bouncy castle and children’s entertainment on the fun days, which will run from 10am to 6pm each day. Flypasts are subject to prevailing weather conditions and operational considerations.

Free parking for the events will be available in a nearby field. It can be reached by following Diseworth Road from its junction near the Nags Head in Castle Donington to the bottom and follow marshal instructions. Blue Badge parking will be available in the main car park outside the front gates of the Aeropark. The event will also be accessible by Trent Barton’s Skylink bus service, with a stop close to the Aeropark entrance.

Admission prices are £5 for adults, £3 for children aged 5-16, with under-fives free. Tickets can be bought with cash or card/ contactless on the day. All proceeds go to maintaining the museum which is run by volunteers.

More information about the Aeropark, including details of their display aircraft, is available here www. eastmidlandsaeropark.org

EMA improvements in its 60th year

A huge range of improvements are taking place at East Midlands Airport as it marks its 60th anniversary.

days. Viewing mounds within the Aeropark provide a perfect vantage point to see aircraft landing, taxiing and taking off from East Midlands Airport’s runway – as well as the specially arranged flypasts.

The Red Arrows will carry out a flypast of the site on Sunday 20 July to delight crowds gathered at the Aeropark. There will also be flypasts of a Spitfire on the same day and a Dakota on Monday 21 July.

Passengers will find a transformed, larger and brighter security hall fitted with next-generation scanning equipment to make clearing security even quicker and easier. Anyone using the rapid drop off area will also find it quicker and easier, with a new barrierless payment system. New bars, a refurbished Escape Lounge and upgraded toilet facilities are among many other improvements in the terminal, and there’s also been significant investment in the runway, taxiway and air traffic control technology.

On the cargo side of the business, the airport is attracting new cargo operators and recently announced exciting plans to develop four sites near its runway. It is inviting expressions of interest from prospective developers of new cargo facilities which could bring thousands of jobs and a huge boost to the regional economy.

From its climbing centre and bike tracks to nursery, Café and football facilities, the Village has grown into a vibrant hub for people of all ages in Newark. This year’s birthday event is both a celebration of that progress and a chance to give back.

The event promises a festivalstyle atmosphere with a huge range of activities for families, children and young people to enjoy.

From outdoor climbing and athletics tasters with Newark Athletics to Nerf battles, street dance workshops, and messy play in the YMCA Nursery, the day is designed to get everyone moving, exploring and having fun together. There’ll be creative zones too – including animation and science workshops, arts and crafts, and an interactive games room for teens. Younger children can enjoy baby sensory sessions, while sports fans can take part in football and foot golf.

Visitors can try out Raleigh’s latest range of bikes, including e-bikes - with all safety

equipment provided. Friendly team members will be on hand to guide test rides and offer exclusive event-day deals on selected models.

There will also be live entertainment from members of the YMCA’s Music Production programme, adding energy and local talent to the day’s events. And with BBQ food, snacks, drinks and ice cream available from the YMCA Café, families are encouraged to make a day of it, bring a picnic blanket, and relax between activities.

While the day promises something for everyone, it’s also about something bigger. All proceeds from the celebration will go to the YMCA Scholarship Fund, which helps ensure that no child or young person is excluded from YMCA activities due to cost. The fund supports access to programmes like Y-Kids and Youth sessions and Camp Williams, school holiday activity programme, giving more young people the chance to discover their potential and grow in confidence.

Declan Barker, Head of Programmes at YMCA Newark & Sherwood, said: “This event is our chance to thank the community for three incredible years, but more than that, it’s about making sure every child has the same opportunity to grow, learn and belong. By coming along and enjoying the day, families will be directly supporting others who need a little help getting through the door.”

You can find more information at www.ymcanewarksherwood.org or call the YMCA on 01636 233 125 to speak to someone directly about booking tickets and reserving activity sessions. Places for coached activities will be limited, so YMCA encourages families to book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Compa Authentic Sicilian street food served with a

After hearing lots about the buzzing food scene in Beeston we kept meaning to visit but a ring road and a desire for ease above most things meant it is still on my to do list (see also ‘Sherwood’). Luckily for us the much praised Compa has opened a city centre branch so we booked in for lunch on a frosty Friday.

From research online it was clear that people love the service and food at Compa but on viewing photos of the interior I had a couple of reservations. When you get there it makes a little more sense but you can’t really escape the fact a modern, light, corner unit has been retro fitted to look like a quaint local taverna. The interior is in a battle with the building and the blue LED’s do nothing to break up the fight. We were warmly greeted on

big Sicilian

smile

arrival and told we could chose a table but the layout was a bit off – 3 tables of 4 were against the window with one table of 2 right next to the door. I was freezing so opted to sit as far from the door as possible but still left my coat on during the meal as it wasn’t warm (and I was driving so didn’t even have a booze coat). We ordered Bruschetta and Arancine for starters. The bruschetta was bursting with colour (contrary to the awful photos) and the warmth of the garlic rubbed on the bread elevated it.

The Prosciutto and Mozarella Arancine tasted under seasoned at first but I enjoyed the warm stickiness of the cheesy rice. I crossed my knife and fork after one and then found myself asking The Northerner a minute later if I could have another. On

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

returning for a second I realised they were quite addictive.

The Northerner ordered the the Porchetta for a main course and I had Pasta al Forno with the hope of warming up. The waiter assured us all the food was freshly cooked and the chef came out the kitchen to cut the Porchetta loin from the display fridge. It was all very reassuring, the wax tablecloths and TV whisper in your ear ‘this doesn’t look good though’.

On arrival what the Porchetta lacked in presentation it made up for in authenticity, in a different (better) world I am sure this dish is served under a vine in Sicily. The potatoes managed to balance the sweetness of garlic without any acrid taste when it is burnt. The skin on the porchetta had a rich snap on first inspection but folded in the way I remember pork crackling used to. The generous dried herbs used in the dish complimented.

My rigatoni was a compact and simple affair. The highlight was the sweetness of the ragu, it was a little oily but neither me or The Northerner could leave it alone and we found ourselves revisiting the small dish even after declaring we were ‘done’.

For pudding we were assured that the Cannoli were the best option but I wanted to try a little more so ordered the caramel cake. I should have listened to the waiter

as the pistacho cannoli was very good. It was sweet but there was the aftertaste from the ricotta cheese which meant it never became sickly. I pretty much ignored the caramel cake until it was finished.

Compa has been one of the hardest places to review since I started the blog. If housed in a different building where the interior focused on authenticity AND warmth I would probably be singing it’s praises from the rooftop. Although the food was good we both left smelling of the oil used to cook the Porchetta and a bit crestfallen.

It's a first for Nottingham entrepreneur Rahul Passan embarks on opening a lavish new Indian afternoon tea room by day which switches at night to a bar specialising in small plates, Indian whiskeys and cocktails infused with spices.

This is the fourth venture for the Passan family who opened Bombay Deli back in 1995 then known as Bombay Sweet Centre. Now under the herald-ship of son Rahul, the 30th anniversary also sees the expansion of the brand into a cool new bar called Passan’s Tea Room and Cocktail Bar.

Passan’s will be located on the first floor of Bombay Deli but the offering and vibe will be very different to the hustle and bustle of the fast-paced deli, on the corner of Carrington Street. Yet the dedication to traditional family recipes and authentic Indian flavours remains the same.

Upstairs, the space has been transformed with richly-coloured and luxurious Indian themed décor, perfect for many different special occasions. It will be unveiled to show a seven-metre dark wood bar as the centrepiece, and

an array of dining tables, poseur tables and sofas with seating for 75. The walls are adorned with beautiful artwork featuring jungle cats and mythical elephants.

What can diners expect?

"The idea of this room is for something really different for Nottingham. It will have an Indian theme, traditional, royal, mixed with a bit of heritage, beautifully decorated" said Rahul who is from West Bridgford.

It will be an iconic centrepiece that is set to create a luxurious yet inviting environment.

HANDMADE CHOCOLATE

The 120-seater restaurant will feature live DJ performances and carefully curated playlists to enhance the exquisite food and cocktail offering in its eyecatching décor. Guests are encouraged to order a number of small and large plates to share or enjoy them traditionally as starters and mains.

The name Nōshi combines Nō, symbolising skill and artistry, with Shi, the Japanese word for four. Here the number four represents balance and harmony, drawing on the four elements of beauty: Sabi (simplicity), Wabi (imperfection), Shibui (refinement), and Yugen (grace). These elements inspire and inform their core pillars:

food, drink, service, and surroundings.

Sue Crimes, Head of Brand who joined from Living Ventures, formally the Managing Director of the national Gusto and Alchemist restaurant groups, who is leading on the new venture, said: “Nōshi will offer something completely new to those who live and work in Nottingham. Combining exceptional food and drinks with a memorable and immersive experience. The essence of opulence shapes our entire guest experience. With each visit, our goal is to delight, inspire, and establish Nōshi as Nottingham’s must-visit destination.”

Undoubtedly the food will be the star of the show. The innovative menu has been designed by an Executive Development Chef, who has trained worldwide across London, New York and Shanghai. His pedigree will certainly bring something fresh, new and exciting to the culinary crowd of Nottingham.

The team is renowned for creating visual statements with their dishes, using unusual ingredients and ornaments to create drama and impact. His ethos of creating light, healthy dishes crafted from the finest quality ingredients was a perfect fit for Nōshi.

Nōshi’s menu will use the finest ingredients to create a sophisticated blend of bold and refreshing tastes. From artfully crafted small plates including the Sweet Sticky Chicken to indulgent main dishes like the Wagyu Beef served sizzling on a Pink Himalayan Salt Block, each creation reflects the restaurant’s dedication to innovation and culinary artistry.

Cocktail lovers will be delighted with the bespoke blends crafted by experienced mixologists, using the freshest seasonal ingredients, designed to complement the luxury of the surroundings and the vibrant menu. The menu will feature cocktails such as the signature Cherry and Chocolate Daiquiri, Cinnamon Old Fashioned, Blackcurrant Martini and a Blue Mimosa.

General Manager, Monika Krzemińska said “We can’t wait to unveil Nōshi to the public. It will definitely be an experience that will surprise and delight.”

East Leake A LOVELY VILLAGE TO CALL HOME

East Leake is a charming and wellconnected village located in the Rushcliffe district of Nottinghamshire, although it borders Leicestershire, contributing to some confusion about its county. This thriving community sits approximately 11 miles south of Nottingham city centre, making it an attractive location for commuters seeking a quieter, semi-rural lifestyle with easy access to urban amenities.

The village boasts a welcoming and active community, with a blend of traditional charm and modern convenience. Its historical roots are still visible in the older buildings and the parish church of St Mary’s, while newer developments have helped the area to grow in popularity, particularly among families and professionals.

Schooling in East Leake is a significant draw for families. The village is served by several well-regarded schools. Lantern Lane Primary School and Brookside Primary School offer strong foundations for younger children, with good reputations locally. For secondary education, East Leake Academy is a popular choice, known for its academic standards, a wide range of extracurricular activities, and modern facilities following a recent refurbishment. The presence of good schools contributes to the village’s appeal for young families looking for a secure and supportive learning environment.

Leisure and recreational facilities in East Leake are excellent for a village of its size. The East Leake Leisure Centre, located next to the secondary school, features a gym, swimming pool, sports hall, and fitness

classes catering to all ages. There are also several sports clubs and outdoor spaces, including football and cricket pitches, tennis courts, and access to walking and cycling paths through the scenic Nottinghamshire countryside. The nearby Rushcliffe Country Park offers further opportunities for outdoor activities.

Shops and amenities in East Leake are conveniently located around the village centre. You’ll find a variety of local shops, including a Co-op supermarket, a pharmacy, post office, bakeries, and several independent stores and takeaways. The village also has a number of traditional pubs, cafés, and restaurants offering a relaxed, community-focused dining experience.

Transport links are another key benefit of living in East Leake. While it doesn’t have its own train station, nearby stations in Loughborough and East Midlands Parkway provide rail services to Nottingham, Leicester, and beyond. The village is also well served by bus routes, and the A60 and A6 offer easy access to major road networks.

In summary, East Leake combines the peaceful charm of village life with excellent amenities, schooling, and transport connections, making it a highly desirable place to live for families, professionals, and retirees alike. Its proximity to Nottingham –just a 20- to 30-minute drive – makes it ideal for those seeking balance between rural tranquillity and city convenience.

As the team's most eco-friendly development to date, every property will have an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate, which can be attributed in part to air source heat pumps, underfloor heating, electric car chargers and solar panels. The first release of the brand-new house

• Gedling Quarter - Gedling: Just down the road from Park View is Gedling Quarter. A select development of homes featuring the latest in advanced energy-saving technology. Only a few final homes are remaining, so don’t miss your last chance to buy here!

• Chateau Mews: If you’re looking for a different take on new home living, Chateau Mews in the vibrant suburb of West Bridgford could be for you. Here you’ll find an exclusive choice of homes up to five bedrooms, including some that are ready to move into right now.

• Sherwin Gardens: Sherwin Gardens is a charming development in the much sought-after area of Bramcote. Surrounded by green spaces and close to local amenities like supermarkets, schools, parks, and public transport links, Sherwin Gardens combines modern living with a peaceful, rural setting, making it an ideal place to call home.

• Beeston Canalside: In June, Keepmoat threw open the doors to its Beeston Canalside development which offers a unique opportunity to live in a stunning, modern canalside location across homes.

In addition to the plentiful choice of energy-efficient homes across the borough, the housebuilder also offers exclusive buying support schemes…

If you’re looking to sell your home, Keepmoat’s EasyMove scheme will manage the sale and even pay your estate agent fees - saving you a small fortune. Plus, there are great initiatives available such as Deposit Unlock which can help you move without a big deposit and save on stamp duty.

Greenwood Community Forest in the heart of Nottinghamshire

In the centre of Mansfield Woodhouse and extending east to the Trent, the Greenwood Community Forest stands as a testament to collective action and environmental stewardship.

A collaboration between Nottinghamshire County Council and local authorities, with other partners including the Forestry Commission, the Woodland Trust, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the Sherwood Forest Trust, as well as the numerous ‘Friends of’ greenspaces in the area. Together we are transforming the landscape and fostering a deeper connection between communities and nature.

Greenwood Community Forest delivers the Trees for Climate grants, a multimillion-pound woodland creation programme, funded through the Defra’s Nature for Climate Fund.

In Nottinghamshire more than 757,000 trees have been planted on 577 hectares since 2020. It is estimated that each tree can capture up to 150kg of carbon per year (link open to the source of the statistics at the UN); the 757,000 trees planted can expect to capture up to 113,550 metric tons of carbon annually - that’s equivalent to almost 13 million petrol driven car journeys of 50 miles each - helping to improve air quality and

overall quality of life.

Beyond carbon capture, these woodlands offer recreational spaces for residents. Projects like the one at Thorney Abbey Farm near Southwell, where 86,775 native trees have been planted with the support and help of students from Nottingham Trent University and volunteers, exemplify the community's role in environmental restoration. Such initiatives also promote mental and physical well-being by providing accessible green spaces. We work with private as well as public landowners to create the green spaces that will enhance local biodiversity, improve soil and water quality, so advancing crop production and benefitting wildlife for generations to come.

Our professional team will listen to your needs, assist in designing the woodland, source all the resources needed

To register your interest or to find out how we can help you to plant trees on your land, contact us at: greenwood@nottscc.gov.uk or go to our website www.greenwoodforest.org.uk

including labour for finally planting the trees.

Greenwood Community Forest is more than just a collection of trees; it is a living legacy of environmental commitment and community collaboration. As these woodlands mature, they will stand as enduring symbols of collective effort towards a greener, more sustainable future.

It is worth spending some time researching potential wedding service suppliers and also looking at any reviews they have received online. Bride’s Dress and Groom’s Suit

One of the most exciting parts of a wedding is choosing a dress, but it can also be very stressful. Many brides may have their dream dress in mind, but it is worth trying a number of different styles before making a final choice. that’s before any well-meaning relatives have given their opinion. The best idea is to stay open-minded and try on a few different styles to see what suits you –often things look very different to how they appear on a model in a magazine!

For the bridegroom the main decision is whether to buy or hire a suit. It is always worth talking to the best man and other senior male officials before making a final choice. Also remember that whatever you decide you will need to allow time for fittings and any alterations. It’s not just the bride who wants to look their best on the big day.

Beauty experts reveal the dos and don’ts for looking after your hair this summer

As the weather starts to heat up, it’s time to ensure that you’re thoroughly looking after your hair this summer. Rising temperatures can cause hair to become frizzy, damaged, and discoloured. To prevent any lasting damage this summer, experts at the beauty and wellness marketplace, Fresha, have created a guide on how to protect your hair during the warm months ahead.

Don’t skip the conditioner

Hydration is essential over the next few months to prevent your hair from becoming dry and damaged. As the temperatures rise, the warm weather can strip away the hair’s natural moisture, so it’s crucial to ensure you’re not skipping out the conditioner in your hair-care routine. Deep conditioning treatments can prevent the hair from looking dried out and will defend against any breakage, keeping your hair sufficiently hydrated this summer.

Try out a hydrating hair mask

Hair masks can also boost your hair’s hydration, making them an essential part of your summer hair care routine. A hydrating hair mask should be used around once a week during the warmer weather to prevent dry and brittle hair. The products contain restorative ingredients and should be applied directly after shampooing for maximum benefits. When using your hair mask, generously apply the product from the roots to the tips and focus on gently massaging it into your scalp. Once applied, leave the hair mask on for about 3-5 minutes before rinsing as usual.

For very dehydrated hair, you can leave the product on longer, around 10-15 minutes. However, it’s important not to leave the product on overnight with wet hair as, this can result in oilylooking hair.

Hair masks work to strengthen and hydrate hair, reducing the appearance of frizz. Because of this, it’s worth trying one out this summer if the product isn’t already part of your hair-care routine.

Avoid daily hair washes

While it’s incredibly tempting to wash

your hair after a long day in the sun, experts recommend that you resist this urge over the next few months. Washing your hair daily over the summer can strip it of natural oils, making it extra dry.

Because of this, your hair will become more susceptible to damage and breakage, such as split ends. As the sun is already drying out your hair enough this summer, experts advise you to wash your hair every other day during the warmer months ahead.

Use sun-protecting products

It’s not just your skin that needs protecting this summer; intense UV rays can also significantly damage your hair and scalp. A badly sunburnt scalp can result in typical symptoms of sun poisoning, such as headaches and nausea. To prevent this, it is essential to use scalp suncream when working on your tan over the next few months. Wearing a hat in the warm weather will also effectively protect your hair and scalp from any nasty sun damage.

After-sun shampoo products are also essential to pack with you on holiday this summer. The products contain UV filters, which aid rehydration after sun exposure. Various UV sprays are also hugely beneficial to try out this summer. The leave-in product protects hair from harmful sun exposure, maintaining healthy-looking hair in warmer weather.

Ditch the straighteners

Over the next few months, it’s heavily advised to ditch the heated styling tools and embrace your natural hair type.

Hair straighteners and curling irons can apply extra stress to hair during summer, resulting in split ends and drylooking hair. After being out in the sun all day, heated appliances exemplify sun damage, so opting for natural styling techniques over the warmer months ahead is better.

Protect your hair before a swim

While there’s nothing better than a refreshing dip in the pool to cool down, chlorine and salt water can cause significant hair damage.

The ultimate summer hair care guide

Saltwater can cause your hair to become incredibly dry, while the chlorine chemicals place your hair at risk of becoming discoloured. Wash your hair in cool, fresh water before and after swimming. Pre-soaking your hair reduces the amount of chlorine or saltwater it absorbs. Applying water directly after swimming also helps to rehydrate the hair, which is essential after swimming in the sea. Try out a conditioning hair spray after swimming, this helps restore moisture to your hair, preventing split ends and breakage. You can also make your own conditioner spray at home by mixing fresh water with your daily conditioner.

Invest in a silk pillowcase

To keep the frizz under control, experts recommend using a silk pillowcase at night. Silk absorbs less moisture than other materials, preventing your hair from becoming dehydrated. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase at night can effectively reduce frizz, resulting in smoother and softer-looking hair. The product is also hugely beneficial for your skin, making it a worthwhile investment for the summer.

The Colour of Confidence

They say confidence is the ultimate fashion statement - but what if the secret to appearing instantly more self-assured was as simple as the colour you wear?

According to psychologists, wearing a specific shade can boost perceived confidence by up to 20%. In a world where first impressions matter more than everwhether in the boardroom, on a first date, or at a high-stakes event - choosing the right outfit could be your silent power move.

Experts at Edit Suits, renowned for their precision in tailoring and deep understanding of fabric psychology, affirm that the right colour choice isn't just about aesthetics—it’s about influence. So, what’s the magic hue that can elevate your presence and command attention the moment you step into a room? Science has the answer.

The Colour of Confidence: How Science Proves Your Outfit Can Boost Your Presence

Confidence isn’t just a feeling - it’s a perception. Studies in psychology and colour theory suggest that the way we dress has a profound impact not only on how others see us but also on how we see ourselves. And among all the hues available, one colour stands out as a scientifically proven confidence booster: red.

The Psychology Behind Red

According to researchers, wearing red significantly increases a person’s perceived dominance, attractiveness, and confidence. This is because red is a highenergy colour associated with power, passion, and urgency. It naturally draws attention, making the wearer appear more self-assured and authoritative.

Dr. Mark Campbell, a leading psychologist specialising in visual perception, explains: "Red is a primal colour linked to survival and social status. Throughout history, it has been used in everything from royalty’s robes to sports jerseys to indicate strength and importance."

From corporate leaders to athletes, those who wear red tend to be seen as more competent and assertive. Even in nature, the colour red signifies dominance - think of a cardinal’s bright plumage or a lion’s rich mane.

Red in Professional and Social Settings

Whether you’re heading into a business meeting, a networking event, or a social gathering, wearing red can subtly shift how people interact with you. Studies show that in workplace settings, individuals dressed in red are perceived as more persuasive and capable. In dating scenarios, men and women who wear red are often rated as more attractive and confident.

Experts at Edit Suits, specialists in bespoke tailoring, affirm that incorporating red into your wardrobe doesn’t have to mean wearing an all-red ensemble. Instead, they suggest strategic use of the colour through ties, pocket squares, blouses, or even accessories. "A deep red tie with a navy suit can signal authority without overwhelming," notes one of Edit Suits' stylists. "For a more casual yet confident look, a burgundy blazer or a red dress shirt can make a statement while maintaining sophistication."

How to Wear Red for Maximum Impact

To make red work for you without overdoing it, consider these expert styling tips:

Business & Power Dressing – A red tie, pocket square, or scarf adds a touch of authority to your formal attire.

Casual Confidence – Burgundy or maroon knitwear is a subtle yet effective way to integrate red into everyday outfits.

Bold Statements – If you’re feeling daring, a red blazer or dress can be a powerful choice for high-impact events.

Footwear & Accessories – Red shoes, belts, or handbags can add a confident edge to neutral outfits.

Why This Matters

In an era where personal branding is crucial - whether for career growth, social influence, or personal confidence - the right outfit can become a psychological tool. A spokesperson from Edit Suits highlights that tailored clothing, combined with the right colour choices, can enhance both self-perception and the way others perceive you. Dressing with intention and understanding colour psychology can give you an edge, ensuring you make lasting impressions with every interaction.

There are great expectations of you being made by people who are impressed with your progress so far. What you are capable of accomplishing will be phenomenal. The desire for a complete change of direction sees you taking risks that at one time you would even have considered, but you are now in a much better place emotionally and mentally than in recent times.

aries

Keep your eye on what is next in line, because you are about to enjoy some success regarding a very tricky matter. A new start is strongly indicated which will all lead to a major breakthrough, either professionally or personally. Refuse to enter into petty arguments with people, because they have nothing better to do with their time. A love affair intensifies. There is excitement in the air as you begin to walk down a new pathway.

cancer

After recent events and realising just where you stand in someone’s affections, allows you to make some very important decisions regarding your long term future happiness. Certain individuals that were once seen as important, have been relegated to the back benches, because you quite rightly feel let down. A newcomer on the romantic scene appears to tick all the boxes, but before you start rushing into anything, do your homework.

You want to try something new to expand your interests and meet other like-minded individuals. Don't make any hasty decisions, or you may have to backtrack when you realise how impulsive you have been. Romantically, love blossoms with either a previous partner, whom you have never completely got over, or someone totally new, who succeeds in winning your affections.

When something important changes it can be a daunting experience. You could really use some words of encouragement, but its also difficult to know who is on your side, or who to trust. A complicated involvement with someone you feel strangely drawn to won't be without its problems, and it looks as though you are about to ignore the red flag warnings throwing caution to the wind.

With your love of life becoming increasingly more intense and interesting, there is a definite upbeat feel about your long term prospects with a partner. A new friendship could start with someone you initially find pleasant, but who enjoys controlling everything and everyone. Keep a close eye on your finances and refrain from spending money you can ill afford just to keep up with others, because everything you borrow today must be repaid at a later date.

Certain plans may have to be shelved in the light of new information, but do content yourself with the fact that you have done everything possible to secure your position so far. You have made the right decision regarding a certain relationship, because you are now listening to your instincts. Friends who have been out of the picture for some time could suddenly make a reappearance, but you may not be that interested in rekindling an old flame. You may wonder what you have done to deserve so many challenges as you are currently dealing with, but its all part of your spiritual development, and a chance to see just what you are capable of achieving. It's time to get a grip and start making a few overdue, positive changes, otherwise you could easily get down in the dumps. Having a major clear out will enable you to free up some more time for you, instead of constantly being at the beck and call of others.

Take stock of your finances and look into new ways of making sound investments for the future. Imaginative ideas liven up your social life, whilst surprising others with your sudden change of direction. Someone may expect you to drop everything and spend more time with them, but perhaps they are not as busy as you are. Always prioritise your own interests and needs allowing everything else to fall into place.

A change of heart regarding your career or a personal arrangement, but perhaps not entirely in the way you expected. A relationship could be heading for the rocks if something is not done about improving communication techniques. Pay attention to your health, especially if you have been overdoing things or living under stressful conditions. Someone is about to reveal their true colours, so pay close attention.

Someone is making a big deal out of nothing, so its down to you to put down firmer boundaries. Family concerns continue, especially if there are health issues involved. Romance and socialising look interesting, especially if you are looking for adventure and excitement. A new admirer could soon mysteriously appear that takes your breath away, because they seem far more in tune with your needs and desires than you ever imagined possible.

Circumstances are now starting to force you to take a long hard look at your finances. Perhaps there is not as much money in the coffers to continue sustaining your lifestyle. Neglecting friends or people who could help you is not a wise decision now, as old doors close allowing new ones to open. Someone is about to test your patience, so be mindful not to fall for their mind games, because there is much at stake if you take the wrong path.

LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Charity is gearing up to save more lives than ever with the addition of a second

helicopter.

The charity, which saves lives across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire has secured a spot on the production line in Italy for a new helicopter at a cost of around £7m. LNAA currently operates with one helicopter, its iconic yellow AW169. But as mission numbers rise, the doctors, paramedics and pilots who respond to an average of four missions a day, know that there are patients they can’t currently get to.

Medical Director Dr Gareth Davies said: “We want to bring our skill and experience to the side of more patients, more quickly, and across a wider area. A second aircraft is a game-changer for these patients and for us as we expand what we can do to meet the needs of the communities that we serve.”

The charity is completely funded by donations and the project has taken flight thanks to initial fundraising efforts which have raised £4m.

The Michael Cornish Charitable Trust and BNA Charitable Incorporated Organisation have each given £1m towards the second helicopter. The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust and Nottingham based company Experian have also made generous contributions to the project, along with LNAA contributing thanks to its fundraising efforts.

Michael Cornish said: “Our charitable trust has existed to help charities who have a

tangible, positive impact on communities, including saving lives. LNAA does this 365 days of the year, across a vast area, so it fits entirely with our vision. We are excited to be part of something that will unquestionably help to save lives.”

A spokesperson for BNA said: “BNA have been a major contributor over the years and are pleased to have generously donated to this important strengthening of LNAA’s cover of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.”

A spokesperson for The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust said: “The Trust has been a major supporter of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance over the years because we know how important the charity is in being able to deliver life-saving care on the scene. We're pleased that we have been able to make a sizeable donation to help ensure that LNAA can get to more patients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire”.

The plan for a second helicopter emerged after data gathered by the charity showed there are people in need who the service cannot get to with just one aircraft. In the last five years, the charity has seen a 135 percent increase in mission numbers and recent data has shown that there’s an average of 1.4 missions every day the crews are not able to currently respond to. The second helicopter will be an AW109 Grand New model and is scheduled to land at the charity in summer 2027 with a view to being fully operational by autumn that year.

LNAA’s CEO Karen Jobling said: “We are absolutely delighted to share this incredible news with our supporters. The addition of a second helicopter means that we will be able to attend more emergencies, more quickly, and provide critical care to more patients who might not otherwise have access in time. This is truly a life-changing development for the communities we are here to serve.

“Every life we save is a thanks to the people who support LNAA. The second helicopter will belong to everyone who has ever donated, fundraised, or supported us in any way. It will save many more lives, and we could not achieve this without them.”

We caught up with stars of the Tina

Turner Story

Jochebel Ohene

On the 24th of May 2023, Anna Mae Bullock, the ‘Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll better known to the world as Tina Turner, died at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, at the age of 83.

It was a day that Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy will never forget as, at the time, she was starring as the pop legend in the Australian production of Tina - The Tina Turner Musical. It wouldn’t be until the next day that she would learn of the sad news, making that night’s performance one of the most emotional of her career.

Looking back, she recalls, “When I first performed this show, Tina was still alive, a week after we opened, she passed. I didn't know until I started receiving messages from people the next day telling me how sorry they were to hear the sad news. I was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa...’

“That night, the house was packed, people wanted to be there to pay their respects and show their gratitude. Having experienced doing the show with the potential for Tina to walk in the door at any moment, that night I experienced it with the potential of her presence being there… the emotion was phenomenal, a different level of performance, like an out of body experience.”

MacCarthy is one of two performers reprising their role as Tina for the UK tour of the smash hit musical that charts the highs and lows of the singer’s journey from Nutbush, Tennessee, to becoming one of the world’s best loved performers. Joining MacCarthy on the production directed by Phyllidia Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) is Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi - the pair will alternate the role.

The first UK Tour is also the eighth production of the show; Tina - The Tina Turner Musical premiered at London’s Aldwych Theatre in 2018, a Broadway production opened the following year. Further productions followed, in Hamburg in 2019, Stuttgart, where N’Zuzi joined the production, in 2020, Madrid in 2021 and Sydney, where MacCarthy came onboard in 2023. There was also a US Tour, in 2022.

Today, both Tinas are together, sharing their love of the star who first came to public attention as one half of Ike and Tina Turner and later scored global success on her own with songs such as What’s Love Got To Do With It?, We Don’t Need Another Hero, and, of course, The Best.

N’Zuzi says, “My foster dad was a huge fan of Tina Turner, consequently, she was the first black artist I was introduced to as he had all her cassettes and CDs. I’d dance in front of the TV whenever she was on, that’s why they sent me to dance school, to stop me blocking the view of the telly.”

As a child, N’Zuzi’s party-piece was Proud Mary, indeed you could say she was destined to play her current role, “Maybe there was something in the stars,” she agrees, admitting her road to the musical was “random”.

She explains, “I was in rock bands at the time and at several concerts I'd been asked to sing the likes of Proud Mary. I was working in Germany when the producers needed an alternate Tina and they emailed me. I thought, ‘Why not?’ So I went along and I got the job. It just happened.”

laughs as she recalls, ”That was the first time I ever came across her name, it was back in the day when you got these cards that, when opened, would sing. This one sang, ‘Simply the best,’ over and over again."

To their regret, neither N’Zuzi nor MacCarthy met the rock legend whose story they tell, the former missing the opportunity to do so by just a few months.

“Tina had visited the show a few months before I joined during a cast change,” she says. “So half of the cast had met her, the other half, like me, had not. But I discovered that Tina loved Germany and that when she ran away from Ike, she hid in Stuttgart, just around the corner from our theatre there.

Not many people are aware of that. In fact, while I was there, I went to a local recording studio to record some stuff and there, on the walls, were all these amazing photos of Tina that I’d never seen before.”

Being on stage when Tina died meant MacCarthy couldn’t pay her respects to the star until the tour had finished, at which point she embarked on a pilgrimage to Switzerland, to visit Tina’s home.

“I went to her house and laid some flowers by her door. Unlike many huge stars who live in secluded communities, her house was by the road, she always wanted to be accessible. I spent 45 minutes there; I knew she wasn’t there but I wanted the connection of having walked the streets that she would have walked. It allowed me to say, 'Thank you,' to her for being the incredible woman she was and for giving strength to so many people. It was a visit filled with joy and gratitude.”

For both actors, telling Tina’s story is a challenge they are revelling in, from her trademark strut to her powerful, distinctive vocals, they have spent many hours studying the singer in order to capture her essence.

“Our choreographer Simone Mistry-Palmer worked a lot with Tina so knew all the moves. She has ensured that what you see in the show is faithful to what Tina did on stage and both Jochebel and I have watched a lot of videos. We still do because we are very different Tinas,’ says N’Zuzi, adding, "No one will ever be her, but as we are telling her story, we have a tool box of things we can choose to implement in the songs, for example, she had a very specific way of

strut was something she took time to master. “That whole Tina-esque presence was definitely something I had to work at and took about eight or nine weeks to perfect, but with Tina you are constantly learning. If you want to be better and better you have to constantly go back to the documentaries about her, to revisit her story, and then drive that into your performance. Every day, you learn something new. The thing is, when you finish rehearsals and go to the shops and suddenly hear, 'What’s love got to do, got to do wIth it...' coming over the store's speakers, you do think, “Tina's following me. She wants me to do better - that’s how I feel anyway.”

“Me too," laughs N’Zuzi.

With such an iconic back-catalogue to choose from, it almost seems unfair to ask the pair to choose their favourite song, for the record it's Tina’s cover of The Tramps’ classic floor-filler, Disco Inferno, although MacCarthy, adds, “I also love singing I Can’t Stand The Rain because a sample of it was used in Missy Elliot’s The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) - I like that, the past and the present coming together through Tina’s influence.”

N’Zuzi ranks River Deep Mountain High and, unsurprisingly, Proud Mary among her favourites, but admits, “ It’s so hard to choose, however, my favourite moment in the show is when it's time to sing Simply The Best. The second the audience hears the introduction they are on their feet, singing out loud and in that moment Tina is alive. I look up and think, ‘Tina’s up there somewhere watching this going, ‘Oh, this one again…’.”

Simply The Best begins the musical's explosive concert finale, which recreates Turner's record-breaking 1988 show in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Recalling the first night she stepped in front of an audience to deliver that scene, N’Zuzi reveals the audience reaction left her in tears. “I cried because, oh my God, I had done it, we had done it, and the audience gave us so much love. We were celebrating and honouring Tina together.”

That love continues at the stage door, says MacCarthy, “When you come out the Stage Door, having given it your all, and audience members, many of whom saw Tina in concert, are waiting to thank you for giving them back the memory of seeing her live, it

is so encouraging. It’s a lovely, lovely feeling, so many blessings of love that can sometimes be a little overwhelming.”

N’Zuzi smiles, as she remembers, “I’m quite small in real life, so often I’m not recognised, but when I started playing Tina, my hair was shaved. When I walked back to my car after the show people never recognised me. I’d hear them replaying the medley at the end of the show on their phones, saying things like, ‘Oh my god, she is Tina Turner!’ I’d stay silent but hearing them say that was such a gift for me. I’d just have a little smile. But it’s also lovely to do pictures and sign for people. Hearing them tell you how much they loved the show is so validating. That’s why you do it, to make people happy and feel nostalgic."

As they prepare to take Tina’s story around the UK, just what would they say to the Queen of Rock if were she were to appear in their dressing room one night?

“Thank you… but then there would be so much to say, I think I would lock the door so that we could have a chat for about three hours..." laughs N'Zuzi, "… and then I’d cry.”

“I’d scream, either out of excitement or fear...” beams MacCarthy, without a second's hesitation, “... and when I’d finished screaming, I’d ask, ‘What are you doing here?’ Because I’m not worthy of being in the presence of such greatness.”

N'Zuzi speaks for both of them, when she says, “That’s the great thing about Tina - The Tina Turner Musical, it ensures her amazing story can live on, and on, and on, and we are honoured to be keeping a part of her alive .”

International artists from four continents will play starring roles at this summer's Gate To Southwell Festival in July alongside some of the UK's leading folk roots and acoustic music performers.

Senegal’s “Hendrix of the kora” Seckou Keita will be one of the headline acts with his African Homeland Band, and there’ll also be a strong European contingent including Madrid-based Track Dogs, Barcelona World music stars El Pony Pisador and returning Italian duo Veronica Sbergia & Max De Bernardi. All the way from America comes the cajun/zydeco Texan sounds of Ruben Moreno and Broster & West, featuring GTSF favourite Mike West of Truckstop Honeymoon together with Canadian songwriter Nick Broster. Top Aussie performers Hat Fitz & Cara return to GTSF, performing their rich mix of delta Blues, folk and traditional Celtic styles, and acclaimed Australian songstress Lucy Gallant will bring her colourful brand of folk pop.

With long-established major music events such as Cambridge Folk Festival and WOMAD sadly taking a break in 2025, the 18th Gate To Southwell looks certain to provide a welcome, high-quality alternative for festival goers. Led by English folk hero Richard Thompson OBE – the famous Fairport Convention guitarist and celebrated singer-songwriter – UK stars will include Alabama 3, Katharine Priddy, Skinny Lister, Jon Boden & The Remnant Kings, The Magpies (featuring Bella Gafney, Holly Brandon and Ellie Gowers), The Rosie Hood Band, Sam Kelly & Jamie Francis, Banter, Sam Carter, up-and-coming five piece Evolution of Fishermen and the alt-folk of Common Culture from Barnsley.

Adding to the international flavour, but hailing from North Yorkshire, there’s also the New York Brass Band. And for something completely different –featuring everything from Carolan to tango to Vivaldi – there’s Simon Mayor’s

magnificent Mandolinquents. (Irish Music Magazine described Mayor as “a demon on the mandolin, an angel on the fiddle”.)

Immune Support for Summer Travel

With international travel on the rise again this summer, maintaining strong immune health while on the move is more important than ever

NeuroScent, a new disrupter in therapeutic essential oil formulations, introduces the Immune Blend, a targeted, science-backed aroma solution designed to support the body’s natural defences and enhance resilience during travel.

Formulated with a curated selection of botanicals including Tea Tree, Frankincense, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, and Thyme, the Immune Blend provides a convenient, natural way to fortify immune response against environmental stressors such as recycled air, disrupted sleep and changing climates.

“We developed the Immune Blend to help individuals maintain their wellbeing during travel,” says Olga Melita, founder of NeuroScent. “The formulation is rooted in scientific research and supports the body’s natural ability to protect and adapt under pressure.”

Scientific Basis

The Immune Blend includes ingredients clinically recognised for their immunological and antimicrobial properties:

• Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia): Demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Peer-reviewed studies confirm its ability to disrupt viral membranes and inhibit influenza virus replication (Carson et al., J Antimicrob Chemother, 2001).

• Frankincense (Boswellia neglecta): Shown

to reduce inflammation markers and modulate immune response. A 2020 study in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy found that Boswellia extract improved T-cell function and respiratory resilience.

• Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus): Contains 1,8-cineole, which supports respiratory health and mucosal immunity. Clinical data show its efficacy in relieving symptoms of bronchitis and sinusitis (Juergens et al., Respir Med, 2003).

NeuroScent’s portable delivery formats, such as the Mini Portable Diffuser and direct-use dropper bottles, ensure that travellers can incorporate immune support seamlessly into their routine, whether in transit or on arrival.

Hydration for heart health

Did you know that over 66% of the UK population doesn’t drink enough water? Lauren Hewitt, Registered Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, breaks down why staying hydrated is essential for overall heart health

Water makes up over half (60%) of your body weight, and every single cell in your body, including the cells that make up your heart, needs to be properly hydrated to work well. Water performs many roles, such as regulating body temperature through sweating, lubricating joints and removing waste products.Proper hydration is especially important when thinking about heart health because it impacts the cardiovascular system in several ways, and we share how you can ensure that you’re getting enough water to keep your heart healthy.

HOW DOES DEHYDRATION AFFECT YOUR HEART?

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more water than it takes in. Fluids can be lost through breathing, sweating and if we are unwell or sick. When vital fluids are not replaced, your body may feel tired and lethargic. You could suffer from feeling thirsty, having a dry mouth, darkcoloured urine or headaches.

Lauren Hewitt, Registered Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, explains: “Being dehydrated causes the amount of blood circulating in our body to decrease. When this happens, the heart must beat faster, which increases our heart rate and our blood pressure, which can increase our risk of a cardiac event. This is of particular concern if you already have high blood pressure or have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease.

“Many studies have found that adequate hydration is associated with reduced long-term risks of heart disease. Being hydrated helps your heart to pump blood more easily through your blood vessels

and to your muscles. This means that your muscles, including your heart, do not have to work as hard. Older adults are at a higher risk of dehydration. As you age, your fluid reserve becomes smaller, you can struggle to sense when you are thirsty, and your ability to conserve water reduces.

“Hydration also plays an important role in aiding the digestive system to function effectively, preventing constipation and removing waste products from the body. It allows your brain to function optimally and supports your memory, mood, concentration and reaction times.”

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU AIM TO DRINK?

The NHS recommends that adults consume six to eight glasses or 1.5 to 2 litres of fluids per day. If it is a hot day or you do physical activity, which makes you sweat, you’ll need to drink more. You will also need to drink more fluids if you are unwell, recovering from illness, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. All of these require your body to lose more water and fluids, and you need to replace them to prevent dehydration.

“An easy way to monitor your hydration levels is by looking at the colour of your urine,” says Lauren. “You should aim for it to become a clear, pale-yellow colour throughout the day. If it remains dark after your first morning trip to the toilet, it’s a sign you need to drink more. The key to optimal hydration is to drink at regular

intervals throughout the day.”

HOW DO YOU STAY HYDRATED?

Drinking water is the best way to remain hydrated however, other non-alcoholic drinks such as milk, juice and herbal teas count towards your daily fluid goals. Fruit juices and smoothies also contribute towards hydration however, these should be limited to one small glass or 150ml per day, as they can contain high levels of sugar, and they should always be consumed with a meal to minimise the impact on your teeth. Carrying a water bottle around with you and refilling it throughout the day may help you to remember to drink regularly.

Fruits and vegetables can also help to hydrate you. They contain electrolytes, which are minerals that play a role in fluid balance, and your body needs adequate levels of electrolytes to function optimally. Cucumbers, celery, strawberries and watermelons are all great options as they contain over 90% of water.

Hydration is a fundamental part of maintaining heart health. By staying hydrated, you help your heart to function efficiently, reducing stress on your heart and supporting your overall wellbeing.

flight anxiety

Experts reveal five ways to combat flight anxiety this summer

With summer just around the corner, many Brits are eagerly planning their holidays abroad. However, for those who experience flight anxiety, the thought of boarding a plane can cast a shadow over their travel plans.

To help you enjoy a stress-free journey, CBD experts at Brown’s CBD have compiled five incredible tips to help tackle flight anxiety. From relaxation techniques to strategic seating choices, this expert advice is perfect for those who struggle with their mental health whilst travelling.

Master the 5-4-3-2-1

technique

One of the most effective ways to manage anxiety in any situation, including during a flight, is the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. This method helps to refocus your mind and calm your nerves by engaging your senses. Here's how it works:

5. Look for five things you can see. Note details, such as the pattern on the seat in front of you or the colour of the cabin.

4. Find four things you can touch. Feel the texture of your seat, the in-flight magazine, or even your clothing.

3. Listen for three different sounds. This could be the hum of the engine, the chatter of passengers, or the announcements over the intercom.

2. Identify two things you can smell. Although this can sometimes be more challenging on a plane, you might notice the scent of food or your hand lotion.

1. Focus on one thing you can taste. This could be the food you're eating, or the lasting taste of chewing gum or mints. By actively engaging the senses, the 5-43-2-1 technique helps redirect the mind away from anxiety-provoking thoughts and towards the present moment. This method of sensory focus is known to reduce the intensity of the anxiety response by interrupting the cycle of worry and rumination.

Choose a seat over the wings

Where you sit on a plane can significantly impact your comfort level, especially if turbulence triggers your anxiety. To help reduce anxiety, it’s recommended to choose a seat over the wings, as this part of the plane typically experiences less turbulence compared to the front or rear sections. Additionally, sitting over the wings can provide a more balanced ride, which can help soothe frayed nerves.

Time your meals wisely

Eating at the right time can play a crucial

role in managing flight anxiety. To help calm your nerves, it is recommended to avoid meals during the flight and instead eat before or after your journey. Eating before a flight can help you feel more settled and reduce the risk of an upset stomach due to nerves.

Get some sleep

Getting some rest during your flight will help to alleviate anxiety and make the duration of the journey feel much shorter. Here are a few valuable tips to aid sleep when flying:

Bring a travel pillow or blanket: Comfort is a key component in creating a sleepconductive environment. Purchasing a supportive neck pillow and a cosy blanket can make a significant difference when flying.

Use earbuds or noise-cancelling headphones: Blocking out the ambient noises of the plane can create a peaceful environment.

Wear an eye mask: An eye mask can help you block out light and fall asleep more easily.

Practice deep breathing: Deep breathing exercises can help you to feel relaxed and prepare your body for sleep.

Incorporate relaxation techniques

Incorporating relaxation techniques into your pre-flight and in-flight routine can help keep anxiety at bay. Here are a few suggestions:

Meditation apps: Apps like Calm or Headspace offer guided meditations that are specifically designed to help ease travel anxiety.

Progressive muscle relaxation: Tensing and slowly releasing different muscle groups in your body can help to alleviate physical tension,

Aromatherapy: Essential oils such as lavender and chamomile are known to produce calming effects. Consider bringing a small bottle of liquid or a lotion to dab on your wrists before a flight.

Lawrence Brown, director of Brown’s CBD, commented on the study:

“Between 33% and 40% of the population experience some form of flight anxiety, making it a common concern among travellers. However, by implementing effective strategies, you can transform your flying experience from a source of stress into a manageable, and even enjoyable, part of your holiday.

“By experimenting with various techniques, you can discover what works best, and with practice and perseverance you can conquer your flight anxiety and travel with a newfound sense of calm and confidence.”

Three Recycled Craft Projects to Boost Your Income

Recycling isn't just great for the environment; it can also be a lucrative hobby or side hustle. In this blog post, I'll share three creative recycled craft projects you can make and sell to earn extra cash. These projects are not only ecofriendly but also fun to create. So, let's dive in and explore some exciting crafting ideas!

Upcycled T-shirt Tote Bags

Gather old, unwanted T-shirts (the more colourful, the better) and wash them. Cut off the sleeves and the collar of the T-shirt. Turn the T-shirt inside out and sew the bottom seam shut.

Cut fringes along the bottom edge, about 1 inch apart. Tie the fringes together in double knots to create a sturdy base. Turn the bag right-side out, and voila, you have a stylish tote bag!

Customize with fabric paint, stencils, or iron-on patches for a unique touch.

Mason Jar Terrariums

Clean empty mason jars thoroughly. Layer the bottom with small stones or pebbles for drainage. Add a layer of activated charcoal to prevent mould. Add potting soil and your choice of small plants or succulents.

Decorate with tiny figurines, decorative rocks, or seashells. Place the lid back on to create a mini greenhouse effect. Water sparingly, and your terrarium is ready to sell!

Vintage Book Page Coasters

Find old, damaged books (preferably with beautiful illustrations or text). Cut book pages into square or circular shapes. Coat each page with Mod Podge or a clear adhesive. Press the pages onto ceramic tiles.

Allow them to dry completely. Apply a layer of clear sealant to make them waterproof. Attach cork or felt pads to the bottom to prevent scratching.

These recycled craft projects not only reduce waste but also offer an opportunity to make money doing something you love.

MILLENNIAL PINK

NOSTALGIA IS THE MAIN INGREDIENT IN MILLENNIAL PINK’S REVIVAL AS

IT TAKES OVER OUR HOMES ONCE AGAIN.

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

“Over the past decade, pink trends have never really left. We welcomed the 2020s with the Barbiecore trend, which saw hot pink take centre stage with its bold, unapologetic hue. As we’re now midway into 2025, we’re seeing the reemergence of Millennial Pink. This dusty rose pink hue, popular in the mid-2010s takes us back to the early days of Instagram and when the term ‘Girlboss’ was coined. Its popularity was sealed when ‘Rose Quartz’ was crowned the Pantone Colour of 2016 alongside Serenity (a calming light blue).

It’s no surprise that many of us are yearning for simpler times and we’re looking to colour psychology for that antidote. Pink with all its promises of joy, light-hearted fun is commonly associated with peace, femininity and healing. Millennial pink continues to be influential thanks to social media. The popularity of the Wicked movie and TikTok trends like ‘soft girl era’, ‘clean girl aesthetic’ and ‘demure’ have brought millennial pink back into the spotlight. Its dusty, muted shade makes it easy to pair with other colours like white, grey, beige, light blues, pastel greens and metallics like gold and brass.

In the interior world, millennial pink has made a splash once again with an eye-catching installation of a pink jungle daybed called Le Refuge by designer Marc Ange at Milan Design Week. Millennial pink has also been the go-to pick for many Scandinavian furniture brands, highlighting its clean, contemporary (yet inviting) appeal.

Even though pink has feminine connotations, its evolution (and trendiness) has made it a ‘new neutral’. Introducing it as a sofa colour makes your living room feel fresh, chic and sophisticated. It goes effortlessly with white walls or darker colours like grey or black accents, making your living room feel edgier.

When it comes to decorating with millennial pink, texture matters. Velvet or plush fabric upholstery will elevate the look, making the room more luxurious giving the room that soft and inviting feel. Layering pink on pink for accessories creates a stylish monochrome look with cushions or artwork on the walls. You can introduce darker pink accents through glass accessories and lighter pink touches with artwork. This will add more depth to the room, giving more variety and texture. If you want to keep it simple, perk up your room with fresh flowers (in pink of course) to add a cheerful touch.

Will millennial pink still be trending this time next year? We may not know the answer, but it can’t be denied that it has staying power, that’s for sure.”

Craft Projects for Plant Lovers

Craft Projects for Plant Lovers

Handcrafted furniture not only adds a personal touch to your garden, patio or balcony, it's also affordable and often much more sustainable than store-bought pieces

With some creative ideas and a bit of craftsmanship, it's easy to make unique pieces of furniture. Dr Susanne Lux, stylist for Pelargonium for Europe (PfE), shows how you can upcycle small furniture pieces incorporating plants, for a summery feel and a cheerful boho vibe.

Mediterranean DIY bench

A homemade bench, lush plants and carefully selected accessories transform a sunny little city balcony into a Mediterranean oasis of calm, creating a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. The handmade flowering seating area consists of a board with two cutouts resting on two planted tubs. The holes are the same size as the planters, allowing the geraniums and olive trees to grow freely. The perfect combination and a real space saver for a mini balcony! Tip: Slots at the back of the board allow easy removal without damaging the olive trees.

Floating picnic table

This floating picnic table on the is sure to impress your guests. To make it yourself, simply drill four holes in a rectangular plank of wood and attach it to a straight branch in a tree with ropes. Hanging lanterns and vases filled with colourful cut geraniums create a lovely ambience around

this unique garden table and are the perfect accompaniment to a summery buffet of fruit and cake.

Flower-filled garden tables

Flower pots filled with a variety of geraniums and set into the tabletop turn coffee tables into decorative highlights. With enough light, water and nutrients, these vibrant plants will bloom from spring to autumn, becoming a permanent table decoration.

To make it, use a jigsaw to cut round holes in a table top. Make sure they are big enough to hang the pots at the desired height. Remove the pots for watering and allow them to drain well before replacing them. A handmade garden table has a large built-in planter with plenty of room for

lush, colourful geraniums. These are planted in the container and add a touch of summer and fun. To recreate this summer project, simply saw a hole in the tabletop the size of the planter to be used. A rim on the planter ensures that it hangs securely.

Tip for floral tables: To protect the surface under the table from damage, make sure the planter doesn't have holes. A drainage layer, careful watering and a sheltered location will prevent the pots becoming waterlogged.

Tables with integrated plant holders can also be bought ready-made, but making your own is more personal and usually cheaper. It also has the advantage of allowing you to customise the furniture to suit your needs.

Display pieces with a twist

Unused furniture doesn't have to be thrown away; upcycling can give it a second life. Smaller pieces of furniture, such as old chairs or side tables, can be transformed in a few simple steps into stylish display items that are both sustainable and useful. A little blue paint can transform an old vintage table into a stylish feature for the patio. Pink geraniums look great against blue. This upcycled plant stand has a charming vintage feel that is the perfect backdrop for romantic geraniums.

This craft idea is easy to make, even for beginners, with a galvanised flower pot, lamp stand and saucer. Tip: Arrange several flower stands of different heights with matching geraniums next to each other.

Old wooden chairs can be transformed in no time into original display stands to show off your geraniums. Simply cut round holes in the seats with a jigsaw. Adjust the size of the holes to allow your pots of geraniums to hang at the desired height. Use waterproof spray paint matching the geraniums to make your upcycled flower stands the ultimate statement pieces.

Whether you’re working with a windowsill or a full garden plot, there’s no denying that gardening has become a lifestyle as much as a hobby. With the rise of grow-your-own culture and renewed love for all things green-fingered, products that support outdoor living and plant-filled interiors are firmly in the spotlight. A-door-able décor!

Interest in front door décor surges as homeowners look to ramp up their kerb appeal.

Homeowners looking to revamp their home’s entrance are not alone, as new research shows consumer interest in front doors are soaring.

Using data from Pinterest, eco paint brand Victory Colours found searches for the term ‘front door inspiration’ have increased 400 per cent over the last month.

The terms ‘front door design’ and ‘front door décor’ have also rocketed over the same period.

Searches

for individual door colours, including pink, green and blue, are also on the rise.

Victoria Yardley, founder of Victory Colours, said: “Your front door is part of the home’s kerb appeal and it’s amazing how a simple lick of paint can transform the look and feel of your home’s entrance.

“Front doors are all about making a statement, and if yours has seen better days, now is the time to revamp.”

According to Victoria, the best front door colours are the ones that work with your home’s character while offering a welcoming feel.

She said: “Classic navy is always a winner – it’s elegant, works with any style,

and never looks dated. Deep green shades, think heritage or olive green, are a fantastic nod to nature and feel wonderfully grounding.

“If you want something soft yet stylish, muted sage green or warm clay tones create an inviting entrance without being overpowering.

“And of course, for that timeless touch, you can’t go wrong with a rich, black –it’s the little black dress of front doors!”

But take heed, some colours can be tricky to get right on a front door.

Victoria added: “Very pale pastels tend to get washed out in bright daylight, losing their impact, while super neon or fluorescent shades might be a bit too garish for most homes.

“And while pure white seems like a safe bet, it can be a nightmare to keep clean. The goal is to pick something that suits your home’s exterior while still standing the test of time – and the British weather!”

Victory Colours’ range of Exterior Wood and Metal Eggshell paint is available now, priced at £64.95 for 2.5-litres.

Pink Kiss Exterior Wood/Metal Eggshell, £64.95
Dick Turpin Exterior Wood/ Metal Eggshell £64.95
Salamanca Red Exterior Wood /Metal Eggshell, £64.95
Royal Sapphire Exterior Wood/Metal Eggshell, £64.95

Making More Room

Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.

Assess Feasibility

Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.

Plan Your Space

Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.

Structural Considerations

Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.

Lighting and Ventilation

Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Access

Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.

Utilities

Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.

Finishing Touches

Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.

Budget

Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

Professional Help

Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.

By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

Education

INTERNATIONAL BALL

AT GRANTHAM PREPARATORY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Grantham Preparatory International School Ball, owned by International Education Systems (IES), Raises nearly £20,000 for When You Wish Upon a Star.

Grantham Preparatory International School, which is owned by International Education Systems (IES), with sister schools in South Africa, Hungary, the USA, Italy, Panama, and Portugal hosted a spectacular charity ball on Saturday, 7th June at the stunning Renaissance at Kelham Hall, raising an incredible £18,608 for national children’s charity When You Wish Upon a Star. The funds raised will go directly towards granting magical wishes for children living with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. The event was a celebration of community spirit and generosity, featuring a live auction with standout prizes including luxury holidays to Florida, fine art, and an exclusive overnight stay at Belvoir Castle, graciously donated by Her Grace The Duchess of Rutland who was in attendance, complete with butler service and dinner in the state room. Guests danced the night away to live music from Newcastle based band Hip Hop Hooray, creating an unforgettable evening for a truly meaningful cause. Martyn Wilkins, Headmaster of Grantham Preparatory International School, said: We are immensely proud

to support When You Wish Upon a Star through this incredible event. Our goal was to ensure that golden wishes can be granted to terminally ill children, and it was heart-warming to see the joy and generosity from everyone involved.

We even auctioned off two reserved parking spaces at the school and pledged to wash the lucky winners’ cars which raised an additional £1,600! I’d like to thank everyone who helped make the night such a resounding success.

Emma-Kate Wyrley-Birch, Marketing Communications & PR Lead at When You Wish Upon a Star, added: We are so grateful for the continued support from Grantham Preparatory International School. Their commitment to instilling values of kindness and compassion in their pupils is truly inspiring.

As a non-government funded charity, every penny raised helps us continue our mission of granting magical wishes for children facing unimaginable challenges; The success of the evening marks another milestone in the school’s ongoing partnership with When You Wish Upon a Star, and highlights the power of community in making wishes come true.

TIME TO CONSIDER ALL GIRLS?

It’s that stressful time of year where parents are waiting to find out which school their child will be going to next year. There’s a lot to think about - location, facilities, pastoral support and of course the school’s results

If you have a daughter, maybe it’s time to consider an all girls education? Backed by years of experience and research, here at Nottingham Girls’ High School, we believe the benefits are compelling…

GIRLS THRIVE IN ALL GIRLS SCHOOLS

There are countless reasons why girls excel in an all-girls environment. They tend to achieve better grades, develop more confidence, and maintain a more positive outlook on life compared to their peers in co-ed schools.

FINDING HER VOICE

In an all-girls environment, students learn to speak up and speak out, even those who struggle with confidence. Research by the Girls’ Day School Trust 1 shows that girls are 93% more likely to participate in class discussions compared to when boys are present.

IN THE CLASSROOM

How many girls are asked to sit next to the naughty boys in class to keep them quiet? At NGHS, we believe a girl’s education shouldn’t suffer so her male peers can stay on track. And with much smaller class sizes, we can get to know and understand your child as

an individual, tailoring our teaching approach to best meet her needs.

BREAKING STEREOTYPES

Gender stereotypes are ingrained from as early as age 7 but in an all-female environment, young girls are more likely to break free from these stereotypes and enjoy “boys’” activities. At NGHS, this might include playing football and cricket, enjoying Physics and Technology, or applying for veterinary medicine or a pilot’s licence. In fact girls in single-sex schools are 75% more likely to study advanced science courses 2 and 60% more likely to pursue STEM careers 3 .

independent schools in the area – you may be pleasantly surprised.

ALL THIS FOR LESS THAN YOU THINK

The cost of independent school education has been in the news a lot recently, but it’s an investment in your daughter’s future that you’ll never regret. You’ll give her a head start as she develops lifelong confidence, opportunities, and friendships. Compare our fees to other

Getting your car looking like new

After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.

The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.

The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.

Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent corrosion.

Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a highquality, durable finish. Finally, a clear

coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.

Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.

HOLLYGATE MEMORIAL WOODLANDS

A.M. Buckingham Independent

Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services. Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.

We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.

We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.

We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the

conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.

There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.

There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.

Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

Hospitals Charity Launches Lottery

Supporters of King’s Mill, Newark and Mansfield Community hospitals can give back by signing up to a weekly lottery with a cash prize of £25,000.

The Sherwood Forest Hospitals Charity has launched ‘Your Charity Lottery’, which enables people to make payments of £5 per month to the charity and be entered into a weekly lottery draw, with the first draw taking place on Saturday 19 July.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust, which runs the three hospitals, is supported by the Charity which helps the Trust to improve patients' lives by funding projects and services above and beyond what the NHS can fund.

The hospital Trust is the largest provider of healthcare services in Mansfield, Ashfield, and Newark and Sherwood, and is supported by many grateful patients, friends and family members who are keen to give back as a token of their appreciation.

The introduction of the lottery gives people the chance to support the charity on an ongoing basis, for the small amount of £5 per month.

By playing the weekly lottery, supporters can help the Trust to improve the lives of patients, their families, visitors and staff, and be in with a chance of winning a cash prize of up to £25,000.

The funds raised through the lottery can help to:

• Provide the little extras that make time spent in hospital more comfortable for patients and their families / visitors

• Fund environmental changes to enhance patient facilities

• Purchase the latest state-ofthe-art medical equipment to ensure patients receive the best possible care and treatment

• Help staff to access additional training, development and health and wellbeing support Ken Godber, Head of Charity Development and Corporate Partnerships at the Trust said: “The lottery will make a big difference to

what the charity can fund around the Trust. The projects that the charity has been involved in previously have had such a positive impact on our patients, visitors, and staff and we are extremely grateful for every donation received.

“We know that there are people who would like to make regular contributions to the charity. The lottery gives those people the chance to support the charity regularly in small amounts, with the incentive of a cash prize if their numbers are drawn.”

A recent project funded by the charity was improvements to the waiting area outside Ward 25 at King’s Mill Hospital. The project was made possible thanks to a £12,500 donation to children’s services in recognition of fantastic care received. The improvements, which included redecoration, new

tables, chairs and colourful wall art, have provided a welcoming and more comfortable environment for families to wait in when attending the ward for tests and reviews, or waiting for medicines to take home once they’ve been discharged. The area also serves the children’s physiotherapy department and community service.

You can find out about more projects that the charity has funded on the Sherwood Forest Hospitals website.

Sally Brook Shanahan, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Trust, said: “I’m excited to see the positive changes that can be made to our services because of people joining the lottery, and I’d like to thank all our supporters for their part in improving lives.”

A BeautifulResti ng Place

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
