How 100 Challenges and N ottinghamHelped RebuildMe My Life
It’s a cold Winter night in Nottingham, circa 2023. I was at home, alone, swiping through reels until the early hours, again. My life had become a cycle of work, screens, and sleep. I tucked myself into bed that night, and I realised that, if I didn’t change now, nothing would. So, the next day I started work on a list of 100 things I’d always wanted to do. I’m talking wild adventures to new countries and practical skills that I’d put off for ages, and I gave myself just four years to finish them. So far, I’ve ticked off 44 of the 100 challenges on Project Bucket List, and each one has reshaped me in ways I never expected.
Nottingham: where the roots are
Many of the moments that changed me most didn’t happen abroad or up the side of glaciers, or on horseback in Arizona, but here in Nottinghamshire. At the very start of the project, I joined the Friends of Colwick Woods to plant one hundred trees. Decades from now, when those trees tower over Colwick, I’ll know I helped put them there.
At Sherwood Observatory, I held my eye to the telescope and saw Saturn’s rings properly for the first time since I was a kid. For a moment, I was ten years old again, excitable and full of awe about the scale of the universe. You can find wonder on a hilltop, just south of Mansfield, if you know where to look.
I joined the Nottinghamshire Beekeeper’s association for a weekend too. I was
invited into a tight knit yet welcoming community of wildlife enthusiasts. They held such a deep love and appreciation for the world around them, so it was impossible to come away without a warm feeling in my chest.
And at the Buddhist Centre, I took a 6 week course where I meditated with strangers. There are so many different views from so many different people in our city. Honestly, it’s worth starting a conversation with someone new to see how they experience the world. Even foraging in Nottingham’s parks taught me to see the familiar with new eyes - paths I’d walked a hundred times suddenly became treasure hunts.
What the list really taught me
This list of 100 things has given me a new lease on life. It’s changed my view on everything, one goal at a time, but the truth is, the biggest change hasn’t been ticking items off a list. It’s realising that nobody is coming to save you. No one will swoop in and fix your life. That responsibility belongs to you. It’s frightening, but once you embrace it, you realise how freeing it is. Once you stop waiting, you can start building!
I’ve tasted wines direct from a vineyard, climbed glaciers and walked marathons for charity. I’ve seen bioluminescent algae, taken a speedboat across
Windermere, and explored Monument Valley on horseback. These adventures all happened because Nottingham has given me the foundation to test this experiment in living differently. If anybody ever asks me how to start their list, I’ll point right here at home.
What’s next
I’ve got 56 challenges left. Some are big: learning to fly, climbing the UK’s three highest peaks, writing and recording a song. What I’m beginning to realise is that the list itself isn’t magic. That’s not to say it’s not important - it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done! But it’s the mindset of opening doors and exploring the world around me that’s been the gamechanger. I’ve got a lot more that I can do around Nottingham. Catching a fish, trying falconry, a cooking class, and joining a conservation effort are all coming up.
There’s so much at our doorstep that’s broken me out of my shell. Visit Sherwood Observatory on a clear night. Plant a tree at Colwick. Try a class in Hockley. Write it down, give yourself a deadline, and see how quickly life changes for you Sometimes the first step is right outside your front door, and for you and me, that door opens onto Nottingham.

Visitors to Attenborough Nature Reserve have until the end of the month to view a range of fabulous work by local artist Jake Sexton who has been a regular visitor to the reserve all his life.
Jake, thirteen, from Attenborough, draws inspiration from the natural world around him having been a regular visitor with his parents – Tim and Alena Sexton - who both have close ties to the reserve.
Using watercolours, Jake creates lifelike paintings of a wide range of subjects, including birds of prey, moths and fungi. His detailed work reflects a deep appreciation of nature and a keen eye for capturing its beauty on paper.
Speaking about the exhibition, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s Head of Communications, Erin McDaid said: “Jake is an amazing artist
and his talent belies his years. Jake’s mum Alena works in the popular café at Attenborough Nature Centre and his dad Tim is a well known local naturalist who worked at the centre for many years and now works for the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. Jake’s talent speaks for itself – but the links with the family and the reserve and centre make the exhibition extra special and we hope many more people will come along to view it before the end of the month
Jakes exhibition will run at Attenborough Nature Centre, Nottingham until Friday 31st October.

Joanne Hutsby, a partner in Gillotts Family Funeral Directors – which has branches in Stapleford, Eastwood, Kimberley, Selston and Heanor - has celebrated her 30-year anniversary at the firm.
Joanne is taking on the mantle of parents Barry and Elaine who ran Eastwood and District Funeral Service. In 1992 that firm merged with another family business, Gillotts in Heanor, before the Gillotts name then expanded to all five branches of the business 10 years ago.
Joanne has been involved in the business for longer than that having moved with her family into the flat above the Eastwood premises aged 11.
Joanne said: “Family life, honestly, was probably quite unusual, although I didn’t really question it at the time! The majority of the time my mum and dad were on call 24 hours a day. There was a phone that we were not allowed to answer. If it rang, it was because someone needed mum or dad because there had been a death. I just accepted it as normal.”
Joanne worked in the family business during school holidays from the age of 16 and when other career options did not appeal while she was at university, she consulted her parents and decided to join full time on graduating.
Her first job was at Gillotts’ Stapleford office, following the retirement of a member of staff there, and she began to find her feet in the funeral business aged just 21. After around 10 years at Stapleford, Joanne became a partner in the business, moving to Eastwood where the activities for the whole firm are co-ordinated, in order to take on more responsibility.
In the mid-90s Joanne stood out not just for her youth but for being a woman in a very male-dominated industry.
She said: “There were very few females in the business at that time. Quite regularly when you arrived people would go: ‘Oh, it’s a woman’. The Church of England had only just voted to allow women vicars, but I can’t remember there being any around. Now
we have probably more women than men as either ministers or celebrants, and the majority of our staff are female.”
Back when Joanne started, funerals were a far more perfunctory affair. Crematoria operated strict half hour slots and it was normal for a funeral to take place within a week of a death.
She said: “Funerals were very functional. There was so little of what we do now. You had 20 minutes and then you had to be out of the door. There was no personal music, no photos. It was kept simple. “Technology has allowed us to offer different things. Colour printers meant people could put a picture on the service sheet for the first time. More music just gradually crept in. People got ideas from going to other funerals. We started to say: ‘You don’t have to have it like this, you can have it like this’. People started to want something different.”
Over the years, Joanne has directed thousands of funerals, averaging out at around three or four a week. A crematorium funeral now lasts an hour, giving families more time to gather together and remember those who have gone.
She has helped families with many unusual requests over the years, including arranging a funeral at Ilkeston
A long-standing Nottinghamshire funeral firm partner is keeping things in the family after three decades of loyal service helping loved ones say their last goodbyes
Town Football Club. These days many people opt for less traditional vehicles with a Land Rover hearse now a popular choice. Routes are now often highly bespoke with families asking for certain check points to be included, such as the house where someone was born.
A funeral director’s job can be emotional: sudden deaths at work or the loss of a child leave families understandably heartbroken. To cope, Joanne said she tries to ensure she keeps work and home life separate, focusing on practicalities on the tougher days.
And while times have changed and funerals have taken on far more personality than they used to, some things remain the same. Families still need warmth, compassion and a professional approach when experiencing the trauma of bereavement.
Joanne said: “Those little touches you can do for someone can really mean so much.”
“As a funeral director you’re like the conductor of an orchestra. It’s important for one person to be there making sure everything goes smoothly and happens on time. Every day we aim to do well. I hope we do.”
Food & Drink
Nottingham’s dining scene is about to change forever with the arrival of KINU, a bold, independent restaurant introducing one of the UK’s first truly limitless fine dining experiences.
Blending the artistry of Japanese cuisine with vibrant pan Asian influences, KINU (pronounced Ki-noo) invites guests to indulge in an endless flow of exquisitely crafted small plates, all for a set price of £45 per head (excluding drinks and dessert).
KINU opens this October at 12 Low Pavement, Nottingham, a Grade II listed building once home to Carluccio’s. Set within Nottingham’s most glamorous Victorian street, historically a hub for merchants and now lined with luxury boutiques, the 4,400 sq ft restaurant has been reimagined into a moody, elegant 120-cover space, complete with three private dining rooms for intimate gatherings and celebrations. Surrounded by celebrated independents including Public café and Kushi-ya, KINU strengthens Low Pavement’s position as the city’s leading destination for independent dining.
Owner Goz says, “Whether indulging in KINU’s pioneering limitless dining format, a continuous flow of small plates at £45 per head (excluding drinks and dessert), or curating a personal journey through the à la carte menu, guests can shape the experience to suit their own rhythm.”
The menu embraces the full breadth of Asian cuisine, from delicate Japanese sushi and smoky robata grills, to aromatic Thai curries, bold Malaysian rendang, and fragrant wok fried noodles.
Hero plates include:
Yuzu Miso Glazed Fish – delicately glazed with sweet-savory miso and lifted by bright yuzu, a refined balance of smoky depth and citrus freshness
Smoked Short Rib Rendang – smokey, slow-cooked beef short rib with a charred blackened crust, braised until fall-off-thebone tender, finished in a rich coconut curry layered with warm spices and aromatics for a deep, indulgent flavour
Signature Xiao Long Bao – handmade fresh every day by KINU’s talented chefs, these delicate pleated dumplings are filled with steaming, aromatic broth. Served piping
Limitless Japanese & Asian Inspired Dining
hot, each bite bursts with rich flavour for a moment of pure theatre at the table
KINU has devised a drinks menu of cocktails with character - featuring three distinctive signatures that balance elegance, theatre, and originality:
Lady Gion – hibiscus and rose–infused gin shaken with lychee and lemon, to pped with prosecco and served in a coupe with an edible flower and pink shimmer
Kintsugi Sour – sake and plum liqueur balanced with citrus and shaken to a silky foam, finished with edible gold dust and a crack motif across the surface
Kinutini – vodka and sake shaken with lychee liqueur and a whisper of coconut water, served ice-cold with a single lychee pearl.
No KINU experience is complete without dessert. The highlight of the menu is Black Sesame & Caramel Harmony - nutty black sesame ice cream paired with warm miso caramel, crisp sesame brittle, tangy yuzu curd, and dark chocolate crumble, finished with a sculptural charcoal tuile. Served with tableside drama, it is a finale that balances richness, freshness, and texture, designed as much for indulgence as it is for theatre.
The look and feel of the restaurant has been designed from the heart. KINU’s interiors are original, personal,
and intentional. Every detail has been designed exclusively for this space by owner Goz, reflecting a vision of moody luxury that feels both indulgent and welcoming. Deep charcoal tones, velvet textures, Japanese birch trees, and gold accents create an atmosphere equally suited to romantic dinners, stylish celebrations, and corporate evenings.
Three private dining spaces, named Gion, Tanaka and Kintsugi, seat between 12 and 25 guests, each inspired by Japanese heritage and philosophy.
Goz explains her vision beyond food : “KINU is my labour of love, created with the intention of being more than just a place to eat. I wanted to design a space where guests feel welcomed and immersed in the experience, with every detail considered to make their time with us truly memorable and somewhere they would want to return to again and again.”
“Every detail has been designed exclusively for KINU, with originality and authenticity at its core. This isn’t a concept borrowed from elsewhere, it is a one-of-a-kind experience created especially for Nottingham’s guests. As an independent restaurant, we are proud to be part of Nottingham’s ever-growing dining scene and to offer a real alternative to the high street chains. I am so excited to finally share it with everyone.”
The Cosy Club
From breakfast to cocktails, brunch to dinner, Cosy Club Nottingham mixes historic charm with standout style in a grand restaurant, with a touch of timeless glamour.
After visiting Rudys and Delilahs I found myself on Victoria Street once again for a lunch with friends at The Cosy Club, I put my prejudice for overpriced chain bars to one side. I have drank there a couple of times and not particularly enjoyed the bar area. Loud, brightly lit and not enough seating for such a massive space. I sound as old as the hills saying it but (like its neighbours) the building is beautiful and deserves better. This is the first time I have had food and the experience was remarkably different. Upon arrival I was shown upstairs to a room I didn’t even know
existed. Tall ceilings, stained glass windows, oppulent upholstery…… it was a lot more comfortable and grand than I expected. The dining room was busy for 11.30 on a weekday with large parties enjoying brunch.
My mood (and expectations) lifted. As no one was working we decided to start with cocktails and my friend ordered a porn star martini, when it arrived it had a picture on top of it that looked like it belonged on a cruise liner in the 1920’s, we were all in awe. The waitress answered our ‘What is it?’, “how do you do that?’ questions
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.
with the simple explanation of rice paper, fine for eating. Eating? Wait what? As she left it became clear the rice paper formed a ‘skin’ on the top of the cocktail that made it quite hard to drink around and despite it being edible by the end of the drink it looked like a washed up jellyfish.
On to the food, the menu has a lot of choice with some brunch options merging into the lunchtime menu. As is now law for larger chains, the menu displayed the calories for each dish, this paralyses me and I nearly always order the lowest calorie option. Scar tissue from growing up in the 80’s and 90’s when I spent every day failing to keep within a 1000 calorie limit. Fishcakes it was.
They arrived on an art deco plate topped with hollandaise, a poached egg and rocket. The fishcakes were lightly fried and they hadn’t scrimped on the fish (as can often be the case) but it lacked depth of flavour. The perfectly poached egg and balanced hollandaise stole the show but there was a reason this was the lowest calorie main on the menu, it was a really small portion.
My friend ordered the Spanish Chicken and it looked delicious and fresh, she ate it all and said it was really good. I had immediate regret over my pious choices based on calorific value. If someone can just erase those 15 years of conditioning and brainwashing thatwouldegreatthankyou. My other friends ordered a vegan burger and poached eggs on sourdough with tomatoes, avocado etc. A kind of brunch pick and mix that I can appreciate – people can modify their order and no one is left with a black pudding/tomato booby prize.
In summary the room is beautiful, the food is good, the service is below average (slow and failing to notice customers while waiting staff were deep in conversation with each other). I probably won’t rush to go back but I had an enjoyable time and while researching this review I have realised the Cosy Club offer a menu without the calories on. I feel like someone somewhere knows there’s a type of person who would rather not be burdoned with the numbers that held such power before they knew better.
Family – due to the restrictions of the building the dining room is only accessible by stairs, they do offer a kids menu but the atmosphere is more grown up.

IT’S MORE THAN A DRIZZLE
Meet the head chef championing
Italy's Liquid Gold
LONG celebrated as a cornerstone of Italian cooking, olive oil is no longer just a base for frying or a drizzle for salad, it’s fast becoming the star of the plate.
Across the UK, chefs are putting this golden ingredient front and centre. From whipped, drizzled, churned and frozen, this liquid gold has the ability to transform any dish into something truly exciting.
Yet, despite its rich flavour and versatility, olive oil is still overlooked by many home cooks, often relegated to the back of the cupboard or seen as just a finishing touch. However, Connor Robson, head chef at luxury modern Italian restaurant Bar Gigi, is championing an olive oil revolution, and encouraging home cooks to give it the spotlight it deserves.
Here, Connor shares how to spot the best quality olive oil, and how to use it to its full potential.
IS OLIVE OIL ONLY FOR SAVOURY DISHES?
“Not at all. There has been a growing trend of olive oil being used in sweet dishes, and this is because it contrasts sweetness perfectly. The fatty flavour makes for a more rich, creamy feel, which is why chocolate and olive oil is a great combination. A drizzle on Greek yoghurt alongside honey is also a great way to benefit from its medicinal purposes too.
“At Bar Gigi, olive oil is the star of many dishes, including our Puglianinspired polenta cake, where olive oil replaces butter to create a moist, airy texture. We also churn olive oil for our Fior di Latte gelato, which gives a nutty finish that balances sweet and savoury in perfect harmony.
“As a classically trained French chef, butter has been the go-to for cooking in the past, but olive oil
can really change the game, and has such a distinctive flavour that pairs really well with desserts.”
HOW DO YOU SPOT THE BEST QUALITY OLIVE OIL?
“Each October, I travel to Manoppello with my father-in-law to hand-press olives from the family grove. Italy is home to three main olive oil trees - Frantoio, Leccino and Maraiolo - each producing oils with distinctive characters.
“In the region of Abruzzo, where the olive grove is, we use mostly Toccolano trees, which originate from Tuscany but were planted over hundreds of years ago. This type survives cold temperatures well, and the soil from the grand Sasso Apennines delivers a fresh, grassy flavour.
“The Dritta olives, which are unique to the Abruzzo region, give a spicier flavour, while the Leccino has a fruitier aftertaste, which is ideal for a range of different flavour pairings.
“When you’re looking for the best quality olive oil back home, it’s important to read the label and ensure you’re finding authentic olive oil. When searching the shelves, choose a cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, but be wary of choosing a bottle that just says, ‘olive oil’, as the chances are that it has been blended with cheaper seed oils or treated already.
“You want to buy extra virgin olive oil that has a protected designation of origin (PDO), which is a certification that states the oil has been produced within a specific region and has been pressed using traditional methods. This guarantees that the quality is there and that
the oil has not been treated in any way.”
HOW DO YOU USE OLIVE OIL AT HOME?
“Outside of using it for your cooking, extra virgin olive oil is also fantastic for preserving vegetables. I enjoy growing my own food at home and often grill delicious courgettes with fresh basil from the garden, before storing them in olive oil. This keeps them fresh in the fridge for up to two months.
“Infusing your oil is also a fun way to experiment with the flavour profile of your olive oil. Preserve roasted beetroot with a mix of balsamic and oil, or blanch green beans and store in a chilli oil mix.
“This way of preserving helps when prepping for a dinner party, or if you’re cooking for yourself and want to expand the life of your vegetables, whole also adding incredible flavour.
“One of my favourite recipes to make at home is Spaghetti Aglio e Olio, which is the ideal simple dish that celebrates the unique flavours of olive oil and fresh ingredients.

BELVOIR CASTLE CELEBRATES
Record-breaking Vineyard Harvest
Belvoir Castle, one of the UK’s most iconic stately homes, has celebrated a record-breaking yield from its vineyard, marking a major milestone for the estate.
Harvesting began in late August, three weeks earlier than usual, due to exceptional growing conditions and grape quality in 2025. The harvest is expected to continue through to the end of September.
Planted six years ago on a carefully selected east-west-facing slope beneath the backdrop of the iconic Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, the vineyard has grown from strength to strength. After producing just 700 bottles of white wine in its first harvest in 2021, output soared to 22,500 bottles in 2022 and 20,000 in 2023. However, 2024 brought significant rainfall and a reduced yield of only 4,000 bottles. This year, however, the vineyard is rebounding dramatically thanks to the hot UK weather.
All Belvoir Castle wines are produced in partnership with Halfpenny Green Winery in Staffordshire. The winemaking team includes consultant Mark Bygott, Estate Manager Phil Burtt, vineyard operations lead Dave Crossland, and The Duchess of Rutland, who has played a hands-on role in the vineyard's development.
The Duchess added: “Many people know Belvoir for the incredible story of the historic castle but don’t realise the estate has a vast range of produce grown and sold on site, including honey and preserves, premium rare breed beef, as
well as our wine portfolio. I am so excited for people to enjoy our wines and taste a little bit of Belvoir Castle history.”
The two-hectare site supports four grape varieties: Solaris, Pino Prococe, Siegerrebe and Seyval Blanc. Belvoir Castle’s sparkling wines are twice fermented in the traditional method and aged for two years, ensuring a highquality product that reflects the terroir of historic estate.
“In the vast Belvoir Estate there were many excellent sites to choose from for the vineyard. We chose this site for its excellent drainage, rich limestone and ironstone soils, and perfect natural slope, which allows spring frosts to roll away from the vines,” explained the Duchess.
Building on growing consumer interest, Belvoir Castle launched vineyard tours this year, which have proven extremely popular with visitors with tickets selling out quickly. More dates are planned as the estate seeks to share its winemaking journey with the public.
“With such enthusiasm from visitors and strong early trade interest, this year is shaping up to be a turning point for Belvoir Wines,” added the Duchess. “We’re entering the next phase of development and expanding our reach while staying true to our roots.”

Nestled to the southwest of Nottingham, the trio of Beeston, Attenborough, and Bramcote offers a compelling blend of community charm, green space, and urban convenience—making them some of the most desirable areas for families, professionals, and retirees alike.
Each suburb has its own personality, but together they form a cohesive pocket of suburban life that manages to feel both peaceful and well-connected.
Starting with Beeston, the largest of the three, it’s an area that has seen significant growth in recent years, particularly due to the tram extension and regeneration projects around the town centre. The housing market here is diverse: Victorian terraces sit comfortably alongside 1930s semis, modern flats, and newly built family homes, making it attractive to a wide demographic.
Young professionals are drawn in by the easy access to Nottingham city centre and the University of Nottingham, while families value the reputable local schools, such as Alderman White School, Chilwell School, and the highly regarded Nottingham High School just a short tram ride away.
Beeston’s high street is compact but thriving, with a mix of independent shops, high-street staples, and several supermarkets, including Tesco Extra and Sainsbury’s. The Beeston Square redevelopment has brought a more modern retail and dining offering, including a cinema and new eateries. Among the locals’ favourites is The Berliner, a lively craft beer bar with a
rotating selection of ales and sourdough pizzas, while The Frustrated Chef offers sophisticated tapas and cocktails in a relaxed setting. For a more traditional pub experience, The Crown Inn delivers charm, real ale, and a bustling atmosphere that speaks to its long-standing popularity.
Just a short distance south, Attenborough is a more tranquil counterpart. Known primarily for the Attenborough Nature Reserve, this area draws in walkers, birdwatchers, and anyone in need of a quiet afternoon surrounded by lakes and wildlife. Housing in Attenborough leans more toward the semi-rural, with leafy cul-de-sacs, spacious detached
homes, and some riverside properties that enjoy stunning views. The area appeals particularly to those who want a quieter life without being too far from the action. Schooling here is well-catered for, with Chilwell School serving much of the area, and several well-rated primary schools close by, such as Meadow Lane Primary and Chetwynd Primary Academy.
Attenborough’s small village centre is modest but charming, with a few local shops and cafes, including a lovely café at the nature reserve. To the north of both Beeston and Attenborough lies Bramcote, an area well-

known for its leafy streets, excellent schooling, and generous green spaces. The housing stock here is more suburban and often larger, with a mix of midcentury homes and more recent executive-style builds, making it particularly attractive to established
Properties in Bramcote Hills and along Cow Lane are especially sought after, thanks to their proximity to green spaces and some of the best schools in the area. Bramcote College and Alderman White cater to secondary students, while Bramcote C of E Primary enjoys a strong reputation.
Bramcote is less commercial than Beeston but benefits
from its proximity to both Beeston and Wollaton for shops and amenities. However, it does offer several standout local eateries including the nearby Nurseryman, a popular family-friendly pub with an extensive menu
Community spirit runs strong across all three areas. From the community festivals in Beeston, like Oxjam, to wildlife conservation events at the Nature Reserve in Attenborough, there’s a strong sense of local pride. Weekend mornings often begin with a stroll through Highfields Park, a paddle on the boating lake, or a visit to Beeston Marina, followed by or an afternoon pint at The Star Inn, a traditional pub tucked behind the train station.
In many ways, Beeston, Attenborough, and Bramcote offer the best of both worlds: the amenities of a small town, the feel of a closeknit village, and the ease of commuting to Nottingham or even further afield via train or tram.
Whether you're a growing family looking for strong schools, a young couple after good food and a bit of nightlife, or a retiree in search of peace and community, this corner of Nottinghamshire feels just right—grounded, green, and quietly vibrant.
Why now is the best time to move to Beeston
Surrounded by historic parkland and scenic river views, Beeston is the perfect blend of vibrant town life and tranquil green spaces. Whether you're seeking bustling amenities, a strong sense of community, or seamless connections to Nottingham and beyond - Beeston offers it all.

The reserve offers free entry and features a range of trails, including the Tufted Duck route, the Skylark trail and the Kingfisher trail, offering beautiful scenic nature paths for local residents.

for winter wildfowl. It often hosts a significant proportion of the county's shoveler and diving ducks, along with larger numbers of mallards, teals and occasionally wigeons.
Nature lovers will have a brilliant experience spotting rare species, enjoying the beautiful scenery, and with the canal on your doorstep, the experience doesn’t stop!

Winter Wildlife Wonders
You might think that with shorter, colder days and the prospect of a wintery shower, the best way to appreciate wildlife at this time of year would be to open or book or pop on a natural history documentary whilst sat in a fireside chair. However, whilst a handful of creatures are hibernating, and a few favourites have headed south, winter has much to offer in terms of wildlife watching.
When the first snowfall of winter arrives, even just a light dusting, it can open up a whole new element to wildlife watching with the opportunity to look out for the tracks of mammals such as fox, deer, otter and badger.
When you’ve exhausted the opportunities presented by looking at the ground, winter is a great time to look up into the treetops. With trees bare of their leaves, many birds are easier to spot amongst the branches, and a range of species will now be forming winter roosts. Large gatherings high in the trees provide distinct benefits for birds in terms of both safety in numbers and additional, much needed, warmth. Birds to look out for include corvids such as rooks, crows and jackdaws. The
sight and sound of a large corvid roost massing is a winter wildlife spectacle to be savoured. Whilst very different to the almost balletic displays that starling flocks put on before descending into reedbeds, it is still a wonderful experience not to be missed. The best time to track down bird roosts is about an hour before sunset - look out for small flocks of birds all heading in the same direction towards safe roost spots. A good place to head is our Besthorpe Nature Reserve west of Newark, between the villages of Collingham and Besthorpe – where the island in the main lake – Mons Pool, is home to a sizable roost.
In many ways, winter is the best time of year to watch ducks, geese and swans. Firstly, Winter sees our highest numbers of birds present and the males, or drakes can be seen in their brightest plumage.

The 2025 Lights of Abraham will feature new glittering archways, interactive stepping stones, a neon forest, giant illuminated creatures including majestic swans, and colourful surprises round every corner along a trail that can take over an hour to complete.
Rupert Pugh, Development Director at the Heights, explains: “Last year’s winter trail was very popular, so this year we wanted to make sure that returning, as well as new guests have plenty of new features to enjoy. It’s going to be a stunning display. Once the park closes for the main season on November 2nd, the team will set to work installing tens of thousands of lights, illuminated figures and festive decorations. Guests will arrive via the festoon-lit riverside walkway before boarding cable cars to take a flight across the valley and up through an avenue of colour to the summit. Once at the top, the trail winds along a circular tarmac pathway past historic structures, through woodlands and across raised boardwalks. The trail is pushchair friendly, but dogs are not allowed due to the salt used to maintain the pathways in icy conditions.

This year’s route is packed with surprises, from the Disco Duck Pond will sparkle with floating glitter balls and a life-sized Boom Box blasting out disco favourites, while the Rainbow Racetrack bursts into colour and sound. Inside the Jungle Barn, planets and stars will light up the play space, and the Enchanted Garden will be filled with gingerbread houses, glowing flowers and magical displays. A dramatic 60-metrelong Triangular Tunnel promises to be a showstopping highlight.
Families will also have the chance to meet some of the farm’s most popular residents after dark. Rare-breed lambs are expected in late November, while
miniature donkeys and reindeer will be settling in for the Christmas season. They’ll be joined by friendly alpacas, wallabies, Old English goats, Oxford Sandy and Black pigs, Greyface Dartmoor sheep and many more. The route also takes in indoor attractions, including the Reptiles of the World exhibit, home to West African Dwarf Crocodiles.
New for this year is Farmville, an indoor play area designed especially for under 5s, included with every ticket, and a special dog-friendly evening on Thursday, December 4, giving families the chance to bring their four-legged friends along to join the fun. To complete the experience, visitors can toast marshmallows, sip hot chocolate and enjoy festive food in the farm’s Tea Rooms, making it a full Christmas outing for all the family.
Families visiting last year’s trail described Light Post Farm as “magical”, “brilliant value for money” and praised the mix of festive lights, friendly staff, and the chance to see the animals by night. One visitor said: “Amazing scenes and lights to captivate all ages! The perfect combination at Christmas time to see all the lovely animals alongside some Christmas cheer and festive fun.”
Event director Richard Walpole said: “Our passion has always been creating memorable experiences that families can enjoy together, and Light Post Farm brings that vision to life in such a magical way. “Affordability is really important to us, and by working in partnership with the fantastic team at White Post, we’re able to offer so much more within the trail, from stepping inside the Reptiles of the World exhibit and meeting some of the farm’s incredible
animals, to enjoying time in the Jungle Barn play space.
“After the wonderful response we had last year, we’re so excited to welcome families back to discover a trail that is even more imaginative, more interactive, and filled with festive magic at every turn.”
Light Post Farm will run on selected dates from Saturday, November 22, through to Tuesday, December 23, 2025 with timed slots running from 5pm.
Tickets are £13 with family tickets for 2 adults and 2 children priced at £45, under 2s enter for free. Booking fees apply. CHRISTMAS AT LINCOLN CATHEDRAL
Lincoln Cathedral has a whole host of events taking place this autumn and winter. You can see the full range of concerts and events on the Cathedral’s website at www.lincolncathedral.com, but to whet your appetite, here are some of the highlights coming up in the next few months.
SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER, 7PM
HANDEL’S MESSIAH
Telling the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death and victorious resurrection, Messiah is always a great favourite. Enjoy a rousing Hallelujah chorus and so much more!
This year, the performance falls on the 30th anniversary of girl choristers first singing in the cathedral, and to mark the occasion the soloists for this year's Messiah performance will feature former Lincoln girls, supported by the current choir and the Lincolnshire Chamber Orchestra.
To complete your evening, you can book a pre-concert meal in Lincoln Cathedral Café, two and three course set menu options are available.
SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER, 6PM
ADVENT CAROL SERVICE
Marking the beginning of Advent, this special service begins the countdown to Christmas with traditional Advent carols, hymns and readings. Held by candlelight in a reflective atmosphere, the evening symbolises the journey towards the light and hope of Christmas.
This year, the service is being held in partnership with St Barnabas Hospice. It is open to all and free to attend. A collection will support St Barnabas, raising vital finds to continue providing compassionate palliative and endof-life care across Lincolnshire.
SATURDAY 13 AND SUNDAY 14 DECEMBER THE SNOWMAN WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA
The Snowman has been a beloved part of many families’ Christmas traditions since the picture book was first published in 1978. Just like the book, the film version is completely wordless—apart from the magical and much-loved song “Walking in the Air,” which will be performed live by a chorister from Lincoln Cathedral Choir at every show.
This heart-warming story will be brought to life by a live orchestra, filling the Cathedral with beautiful music and making the most of its stunning acoustics. The nave will be lit to create a truly magical atmosphere, making it a special experience for both children and adults. This popular event tends to sell out quickly, so book your tickets early to ensure you don’t miss out!
Performances will take place on Saturday 13 December and Sunday 14 December 2025.

Steam trains are a quintessential part of the British landscape, often seen chugging along gently in the countryside or in famous films, like chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter.
But steam train excursions are becoming increasingly popular with the public, coming in a myriad of forms from murder mystery dinners inspired by Agatha Christie to sightseeing tours of the Scottish Highlands.
Dubbed ‘The Golden Age of Travel’, the steam engine is a staple part of British history. We may be used to high-tech, highspeed trains now in the modern era, but the invention of steam trains was a vital part of the Industrial Revolution. Having been created well over 200 years ago, the steam train helped the evolution of the railway system and eventually travel all together.
Today, steam trains are considered a more beautiful and relaxing way to travel, and most set off on steam train journeys for fun rather than necessity. Steam train events and excursions are a slower-paced way of taking in the
picturesque views as you travel. Plus, they have the added bonus of offering a key piece of history to passengers. Steam train outings are run across the country and come in a variety of themes. Companies up and down the UK host elegant black-tie dinners with multiple courses or luxury afternoon teas aboard their steam trains.
Many are aimed at families, providing outings and more interesting ways of seeing the sights. And who could forget the lively seasonal events that take place throughout the year?
This winter, seasonal events will be held on almost every steam train service in the UK to celebrate Christmas.
Dress up in your favourite Christmas pyjamas and pop on that Santa hat before setting off on the cosiest Christmas train ride around.
Sip on hot chocolate and nibble on sweet treats as you enjoy steaming softly through the frozen countryside. And look out for a surprise visit from Father Christmas as he visits all the
boys and girls aboard.
Seasonal Christmas steam train events will be departing from stations all over the Midlands and surrounding areas from November to December. Make sure to secure your place on a Christmas steam train to see Father Christmas and his elves this festive season.
Make this Christmas extra special with a magical journey aboard a traditional steam-hauled train!

THESCARELABYRINTH RETURNSMAZE
4 Terrifying Nights of Fear at Notts Maze!
Notts Maze is set to transform once again this October as The Labyrinth Scare Maze returns, bringing spine-chilling thrills and unforgettable scares to Combs Farm
Running for just four nights only - 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th October 2025 - The Labyrinth is Nottinghamshire’s ultimate Halloween experience. Visitors will step into a 12-acre haunted corn maze, where live actors, immersive sets, lights, and pyrotechnics create a world of fear around every corner.
This year’s theme, Hillbilly Harvest, will plunge guests into a twisted tale of rural horror. Brave visitors must navigate the maze, uncover hidden clues, and escape the creatures lurking in the shadows. Discover the haunting tale of Whitley Farm at Notts Maze. Once a thriving homestead, it's now a place of terror.
Deep within the sprawling fields of Notts Maze lies Whitley Farm, once a thriving homestead, a picture of prosperity. It's cornfields stretching as far as the eye could see. But with the arrival of a sinister force from the depths of the earth, the land itself became corrupted, and the Whitley family fell victim to
it's malevolent influence. Now a place shrouded in terror and darkness. Legends whisper of the Whitley family, whose isolation and suspicion of outsiders led them down a path of madness and horror.
As the crops wilted and died, so too did the sanity of the Whitleys. Consumed by visions and whispers from the darkness, they turned on one another in a frenzy of violence. Those who dared approach the farm vanished without a trace, their anguished cries lost in the night. Now, Whitley Farm stands as a grim testament to the family's tragic demise, a place where nightmares roam freely and the boundary between the living and the dead is blurred.
Adventurers brave enough to venture into the farm's labyrinthine corn maze must navigate its twisting paths while evading the vengeful spirits of the Whitley family. But beware, for the darkness that claimed Whitley Farm still hungers for
souls. Will you emerge unscathed from the clutches of the hillbilly curse, or will you become its next victim?
“We’re excited to be at Combs Farm this year with our biggest and scariest event yet,” said Aaron, organiser of Notts Maze.
“The Labyrinth has become a must-do Halloween experience for thrill seekers across Nottinghamshire, and we can’t wait to welcome people into the corn once again.”
This event is strictly for 14 years and above and tickets are limited for each night and are already selling fast!

GIANT MONSTERS RETURN TO NOTTINGHAM THIS HALLOWEEN
It’s in Nottingham, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), is bringing back one of the UK’s most unique Halloween celebrations as giant monsters return to Nottingham city centre this October.
For the fourth year running, these larger-than-life creatures will transform Nottingham into a Halloween playground, drawing thousands of visitors to experience the city’s spookiest - and most playful - seasonal spectacle. 1940s Melton Mowbray is bringing the spirit of 1940s and 1950s Britain alive with a vintage festival here in Melton Mowbray at Play Park, and at the Stockyard on the weekend of May 9th/10th 2026, 10am - 5pm.
There will be a range of exciting events taking place all around the park, stretching into and through the main town centre, onto Nottingham Street and into the Stockyard, where you can step back into the 1950s.
The 1940s event has become a popular, annual attraction in the Melton Mowbray summer events calender. This year we wanted to bring the 40s & 50s together by holding a vintage festival to celebrate both eras with one big event.
With a packed vintage festival of entertainment throughout the weekend, including live music, singing and dancing. Living history re-enactor groups from all around the country, with vintage military and civilian vehicles from the 30s and 40s in the park, and 50s and 60s in the Stockyard. All this combined with a vintagefairground providing nostalgic fun for the whole family.
Walk from the 1930 & 40s in the park, along Nottingham Street and into the Stockyard and step into the 1950s & 60s.
The 1950s in Britain represented a pivotal ere characterised by significant social, economic, and cultural transformation. Emerging from the devastation of WW2, the nation gradually embarked on a path towards recovery, with a significant advancement in living standards.
The rise of youth culture was propelled by the unprecidented popularity of Rock 'n' Roll music and new fashion trends that signified cultural liberation, in essence the 1950s functioned as a crucial bridge between post-war recovery and the onset of modern life.
We want you to experience what life was like in the 1940s & 1950s with our Vintage Festival, and feel the atmosphere made possible through the victory in Europe. It will be packed with live entertainment, 40s & 50s traders, classic cars, iconic
hot rods and full of good old-fashioned family fun and entertainment. So get yourselves dressed up and enjoy the atmosphere from a period that introduced great fashion and music, that can't help but put a smile on your face!
We are still taking bookings for vintage traders, re-enactment, living history groups as well as cars from the 30s 40s, 50s and 60s.

The scruffy, disarming troupe of multi-cultural fools will take audiences on a spellbinding adventure, unleashing fullthrottle madness amidst enchanting, contemplative moments, before roaring to its legendary finish. The tour will travel the country, dazzling audiences at every venue, including the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, from Wednesday 29 October to Sunday 2 November.
Slava’s SnowShow, a visual and musical extravaganza, offers a dream-like vision that overflows with theatrical magic and humorous antics. The production is set within an absurd and surrealistic world of ‘fools on the loose’, a work of art in which each scene paints a picture: an unlikely shark swimming in a misty sea; clowns and the audience tangled up in a gigantic spider’s web; heart-breaking goodbyes with a coat rack on a railway platform; audience members hypnotized by giant balloons; and an out-of-thisworld snowstorm that’s sure to leave audiences spellbound.
Slava’s SnowShow is the recipient of more than 20 international awards, including an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, a Drama Desk Award, and a Tony Award
nomination. In addition to unanimous public acclaim, the production is a darling with critics who have declared it “a thing of rare theatrical beauty not to be missed” (Daily Telegraph) and confessed, “my heart leapt… [SnowShow] induces waves of giggles and sighs of pleasure.” (New York Times).
Born in a small town in central Russia, Slava Polunin discovered the art of pantomime in high school. As he grew to adulthood in Leningrad, he developed an eccentric version of the form, which he lovingly dubbed ‘Expressive Idiotism.’
From 1979 on, Slava quickly became a fixture on Russian stages and TV, sharing his gifts and continuing to redefine the art of clowning with his poetic and poignant approach to comic performance. This discovery would reach its zenith with Slava’s SnowShow, which debuted in Moscow in 1993, and then burst onto world stages at the 1996 Edinburgh Festival to universal praise and wonder.
Since its debut, the work has travelled all over the world, playing to an estimated 14 million people worldwide, with more than 12,000 performances in over 225 cities and 40 counties.

To celebrate the season, the conservation charity has curated a list of the top trails and scenic spots in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire where autumn truly comes alive. These walks are ideal for families, friends, or solo explorers looking to soak up the sights, sounds, and scents of the season.
Belton Estate, Grantham, Lincs, NG32 2LS
The spectacular sight of the autumn deer rut is not to be missed at Belton Estate. Guided walks, led by one of Belton’s rangers, are a great way to make the most of this remarkable display of nature and will be running on 16, 18, 23 and 24 October. The National Trust Unveils the Best Seasonal Walks in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire
Other guided walk highlights include monthly dog walks, an Influential Women of Belton walk around the gardens, and a special Act of Remembrance Walk on Sunday 9 November taking in some of the fascinating military history of the area. For self-led walks, visitors can enjoy spotting photogenic fungi in the grassy areas of the parkland as well as in Old Wood and around the lakes, as well as spotting fieldfares and redwings, and signs of water voles and otters.
Visit the Belton Estate website for full details: /www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/ nottinghamshire-lincolnshire/belton-estate Clumber Park, Worksop, Notts, S80 3BE With the crunching of leaves underfoot, the vibrant colours of the trees, pumpkins & gourds in the garden, and the fascinating displays of fungi through the woodland, autumn is an incredibly special time at Clumber. There is 3,800 acres of parkland and more than 20 miles of trails to discover so walks can range from a quick stretch of the legs to a long exploration of the different landscapes and habitats.
The circular lakeside walk is the most popular visitor route and looks especially stunning on a bright autumn day with reflections of the seasonal colours in the water. Keen photographers are advised to keep a look out for wildlife, particularly birds and waterfowl, and deer in quieter parts of the park.
Clumber Park also offers a variety of regular guided walks to support physical and
mental wellbeing. Full details can be found on the website at www.nationaltrusr.org.uk/ clumberpark
Gunby Estate, Hall and Gardens, Spilsby As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, Gunby offers a chance to slow down and reconnect—with nature, with history, and with others. From September through to December, visitors can enjoy a series of guided and social walks that reveal the estate’s hidden corners and invite moments of calm and curiosity.
For those drawn to stories of the past, a four-mile guided walk to Bratoft Manor leads through the wider Gunby estate, passing the remains of the medieval village and arriving at the former home of the Massingberd family. Along the way, guides share fascinating insights into the landscape’s history and wildlife. The route is linear and may be muddy or uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended. While not suitable for wheelchairs, well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome.
For a more relaxed experience, the Gunby Social Walks offer a gentle stroll and friendly conversation. Led by volunteer walk leaders, these walks are suitable for all and provide a lovely way to meet new people and enjoy the outdoors. After the walk, the tea-room is open for refreshments, and entry to the gardens is included.
Dogs on leads welcome. For more information on the walks visit: www. nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/nottinghamshirelincolnshire/gunby-estate-hall-and-gardens/ events

DARE TO KNOW - Sapere Aude
“The quality of the sixth form provision is exceptional. Students are committed and aspirational. The ‘dare to know’ challenge encourages them to be inquisitive. They feel well supported planning their next steps.” Ofsted 2022
At Toot Hill 6th Form College, we believe that every student entering this important next stage in their education deserves the opportunity to encounter the highest quality teaching, learning and wider enrichment. We offer a wide range of A-Level subjects and vocational courses, taught by expert specialist teachers.
Our motto, ‘Dare to Know’ is underpinned by our core aim: to support and secure aspirational levels of achievement for every student in our inclusive college. We are dedicated to offering an environment that is conducive to the very best learning and attainment through first class educational experiences, excellent pastoral care and bespoke careers education. By supporting our students to reach their full potential, our goal is to prepare them for the next stage of their learning journey — whether that be university, apprenticeships, or employment.
Students thrive at Toot Hill 6th Form College, where our student union motto ‘leave your legacy’ encourages all students to leave an impact on the school, college and wider community through mentoring, fundraising and community work. A large number of our alumni visit each year to share their

The college also secured a 98.9% pass rate in all A-Level and vocational courses, reflecting the high academic rigour that is expected. On average, a grade -B was achieved by students on A-Level courses in 2025 and a -Distinction (equivalent to a grade A) was achieved by students on vocational courses. Moreover, every student who wished to continue into higher education secured a university place.
We
warmly welcome you to see the college first hand, see and speak to existing staff and students and find out more detailed information about our fantastic college where we enable our young adults to ‘dare to be’!
Every parent wants to give their child the very best start in life and access to the best education possible. Before children even start school most will go to nursery and there are a couple of different options that are available.
If you are struggling to decide between pre-school at the school you will be sending your child to or nursery, we have weighed up the pros and cons of each.
DAY NURSERIES
Day nurseries offer full-time or part-time care, socialisation and development skills to young children. They can accommodate babies as young as six weeks to toddlers as old as five and, typically, their opening hours follow ‘business hours’. Therefore, parents and carers are able to arrange the care of their young children around their work and personal schedules.
Most, if not all, day nursery staff will hold a certificate in childcare training, and will offer your child age-appropriate care and activities. For example, babies are given much more personalised care, based on their individual sleep and feeding routines. Their education is based on sensory, explorative and playful activities. Toddlers receive more activities that help them develop verbal, social, creative and coordination skills. Children who are preparing to enter nursery schools are given a taste of early years education that will prepare them for the next stage.
LOCAL AUTHORITY V PRIVATE NURSERIES
Local authority (LA) day nurseries can be run by your county council or your local community. They tend to be a cheaper alternative to private day nurseries, but are often difficult to get your child into due to long waiting lists.
Private or independent day nurseries, on the other hand, tend to be run by individuals or employers. The cost, of
Nursery
know-how
course, depends on the age of your child. For example, the cost of caring for babies is higher as they need a larger staff to child ratio. Both private and LA day nurseries must be OFSTED registered and undergo regular inspections.
HOW DO NURSERIES AND PRE-SCHOOLS DIFFER?
Both follow guidelines that are provided by the Early Years Foundation Stage but private nurseries are a little different in the sense that they are able to tailor the sessions to the individual needs of each child. Though nurseries will accept children as young as six weeks, preschools tend to accept children right before school age, so it is unlikely that you would find one taking on children before they are three-years-old.
TIME AND SCHEDULES
Lots of pre-schools will run on a school schedule or may even offer a reduced schedule, for example 8am-2pm each day. If your work commitments mean that you need to arrange for childcare outside of these hours, for example from 7am-7pm, you are best to look at private nurseries as an alternative.
THE ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR CHILD
If you want your child to get into a good routine and access something more similar to school, pre-school is probably the best option for you. This is because most will have a formal curriculum and employ trained teachers. If you would prefer your child to be in a much more relaxed environment, nursery is better. Nurseries also tend to be cheaper because they do not necessarily employ trained teaching staff.
No matter where you choose to enrol your child, you can be assured that the education and care will be of the best standard and upmost importance. So when looking at care or schooling options, choose the one that's the perfect fit for both you and your child.

Someone will ask for your opinion, Honesty is always the best policy. Taking the lead in a project will be a creative challenge, but the results will be amazingly successful. This is now your time to really prove to the rest of the world and yourself exactly what you are capable of. A romantic gesture will show just how much you are admired, and there is a chance of a deep understanding being realised.
aries
Even though you may not want to admit it, you are looking for some kind of fulfilment or recognition. For so many years you have perhaps felt stuck and unable to move out of your current situation for lots of reasons. There is a major breakthrough on the horizon and whereas this will release you in one sense, there will be new problems and challenges to face and deal with, only different to what you have been used to before.
cancer
Tension in the air either at home or work has a lot to do with misunderstandings over some new arrangements. You don’t have to do anything special except to just continue doing what you are good at, and leave others to sort their own issues out. There are certain things that must happen before a change of direction can take place. Keep hold of both your money and sanity because once spent, its gone for good.
You should be proud of your achievements, if you have done your best, then you could not have done any better. If your conscience is clear, there is no need to worry about what may occur. Accusations or criticisms may fly, but they are not necessarily directed at you. Use your imagination and don’t let your talents go to waste. Someone is keen to learn new skills and will be looking towards you for guidance.
taurus
A project may hit a few delays and setbacks for several reasons, but this does not mean that you should give in and walk away. Someone may inadvertently let slip some information you can later use to your advantage. You may have started to doubt the strength or commitment of someone close to you, so perhaps its tIme to have a much needed talk about where things are going, and see what can be salvaged as a result.
Some people are a disappointment and are not as reliable as you. A friend may walk away from making a comment or a job half done, expecting others to pick up the pieces. Whilst their enthusiasm has half waned, your excitement and determination has only just began, and these are the first steps towards freedom and liberation. You have everything to look forward to and much more besides. These are, indeed, very exciting times.
Its only natural to feel let down if someone isn’t sticking to their word or keeping their promises. Watch out for secrecy and mixed messages because there is probably more go-ing on behind the scenes than you are perhaps aware of. A change of direction at work will be for the best in the long term as you examine your options and which doors are starting to open benefiting your advancement and future success.
Business meetings and other activities could be disrupted and rescheduled. If you want to avoid problems, don’t allow your heart to rule your head by making emotional promises about something which is a complete waste of your time and energy. Money issues will take up a lot of the weeks ahead as you start to plan for your future. You may either choose to move house or renovate your existing home.
You may not be pleased about the behaviour and attitude of someone close to you, but neither must you interfere in their personal development either. It's important that you take good care of your health and wellbeing, because you do not respond well to outside stresses and interference. Take some time off from your usual routine, and look for outside interests and pastimes. You don’t have to tell anyone your business and remember to keep your secrets and your finances safe.
You won't tolerate anyone you consider to be ill informed or just plain stupid. Major changes affecting your work could see you in a transition period between two jobs, or business ventures. Take a good hard look at your money and ask yourself if you can afford to make decisions on a whim? Health matters need addressing especially if you have found yourself under mountains of stress lately. Take a break, preferably a mini holiday.
You are about to receive a sharp lesson regarding trust after ignoring your instincts regarding one certain person. Someone is about to ask you a lot of questions, but you don’t have to answer any of them if you do not want to. Socially this should be a week of fun and laughter amongst good friends. There could even be a new romance starting which will take you unawares. You are about to find what you have been looking for.
Social arrangements are all set to become one long party whilst you meet up and connect with friends from all directions. You may find yourself at odds with your partner regarding a matter based on jealousy and obsession. There may be short term fixes put in place, but long term, deep reoccurring doubts will need addressing. A financial burden will get sorted, but like everything, it will take time.

LEARN HOW TO SKI
Ski schools at most resorts offer group and private lessons tailored to different skill levels, often starting with basic techniques like snowploughing, turning, and using the ski lifts.
Qualified instructors not only teach essential skills but also help boost your confidence on the slopes. Group lessons can be more affordable and social, while private lessons provide more individualized attention and faster progress.
When planning your first ski trip abroad, choosing the right resort is crucial. Some of the most popular destinations for beginners in Europe include resorts like La Plagne and Les Gets in France, which are known for their wide, gentle slopes and excellent ski schools. In Austria, resorts offer stunning alpine scenery and beginner-friendly terrain.
For those looking to travel further afield, resorts in North America such as Whistler in Canada or Breckenridge in the USA also cater well to newcomers with well-marked green runs and a range of lesson options. It's a good idea to research resorts that have designated beginner zones, good snow reliability, and accessible lifts.
Equally important as the destination and the lessons is making sure you have the

right ski clothing. Skiing involves long hours outdoors in cold, sometimes wet conditions, so proper gear is essential for both comfort and safety.
Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin, followed by an insulating mid-layer such as fleece or down. The outer layer, typically a waterproof ski jacket and trousers, protects against wind, snow, and rain.
Investing in good-quality clothing will make a big difference, especially if you plan to ski regularly. Don’t forget essentials like waterproof gloves or mittens, ski socks (never wear two pairs at once), a helmet for safety, and goggles to protect your eyes from snow glare and wind. Neck warmers or balaclavas are also helpful on particularly cold days.
In summary, learning to ski is a combination of proper instruction, choosing a beginnerfriendly resort, and dressing appropriately for the mountain environment.
With the right preparation and mindset, skiing can become not just a holiday activity but a lifelong passion.
whether you’re navigating your firrst bunny slope or dreaming of alpine adventures abroad, the journey starts with taking that first lesson and being properly equipped to enjoy the snow.

Spending Christmas away in a cosy cottage with your family sounds like the perfect way to unwind, reconnect, and make lasting memories. Imagine arriving at a picturesque countryside retreat, tucked away from the hustle and bustle, with frosted trees and a soft blanket of snow covering the ground. The cottage is warm and welcoming, with a crackling fire in the hearth, the scent of pine and cinnamon in the air, and fairy lights twinkling around the windows.
You spend your days going on winter walks through quiet lanes and snowy fields, wrapped up in scarves and boots, laughing and chatting as you go. Back at the cottage, you sip hot chocolate or mulled wine, play board games by the fire, and take turns cooking hearty meals in the rustic kitchen. Christmas Eve is filled with excitement as you hang stockings, bake cookies, and listen to festive music.
On Christmas morning, the whole family gathers around the tree in pyjamas, exchanging gifts and enjoying the simple pleasure of being together. A traditional Christmas dinner follows — roast turkey, all the trimmings, and a rich pudding for dessert. There's no rush, no pressure, just quality time with loved ones in a peaceful setting.
Evenings are for storytelling, movie nights, and gazing at the stars outside, far from city lights. It's a slower, more meaningful way to spend the holidays — focusing on togetherness, laughter, and rest.

How quitting smoking boosts heart health
Did you know that around 6.4 million people in the UK smoke cigarettes? Lauren Hewitt, Registered Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, reveals four tips to help you or someone you know quit smoking today.
Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in the UK. Tobacco products, such as cigarettes, contain many harmful substances, from acetone and tar to nicotine and carbon monoxide. Inhaling these can lead to ongoing complications and long-term effects on your body and your health.
Lauren Hewitt, Registered Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, explains:
“Smoking can increase your risk of many health conditions, including glaucoma,
mental health, gum disease, cancer, lung damage, chronic lung conditions, psoriasis, infertility, osteoporosis, and issues with blood clotting. It has also been found to increase inflammation and negatively impact the immune system, making you more susceptible to infection.
Smoking is associated with decreased food intake and lower body weight. This is due to the nicotine inhaled with smoking being an appetite suppressant, leaving those who smoke without the desire to eat food regularly. The smoking habit is also a behavioural alternative to eating for many and is used as a weight control method.”
What impact does smoking have on your heart?
Smoking can damage your heart and blood vessels, increasing your risk of a heart attack. The chemicals in cigarettes form a sticky coating on the walls of your arteries, which allows any fatty material passing through to get stuck.
This, in time, can clog your arteries,
causing atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Smoking can also increase your risk of blood clots and reduce the amount of oxygen getting around your body.
“When you smoke a cigarette, your blood pressure increases immediately and remains elevated for 15 to 30 minutes,” says Lauren. “Cigarettes trigger your sympathetic nervous system (SNS), or your fight-or-flight response, which causes a rise in heart rate and blood pressure. Smoking regularly can contribute to high blood pressure due to the build-up of fatty materials in your arteries.”
What are the benefits of stopping smoking?
The day that you stop smoking, your body begins to clear itself of the harmful toxins that you’ve been inhaling and begins the repair process. Soon after stopping, you’ll notice an improvement in your sense of taste and smell, you’ll feel more energetic, and you may start to breathe more easily.
Other benefits, such as better
circulation, improved lung function, and the reduction in coughing and wheezing, will also follow. You may also find that your mental health and wellbeing become better, and you feel less stressed, anxious, and depressed.
“With regards to the benefits on your heart, within six hours of stopping smoking, your heart rate and blood pressure will stabilise, and within two to twelve weeks, your blood will pump more efficiently through your heart and muscles. One year down the line, your risk of heart attacks will have halved in comparison to someone who smokes, and after 10 years, your risk of death from lung cancer will have halved in comparison to someone who smokes. 15 years on and your risk of heart attacks becomes the same as someone who has never smoked,” Lauren explains.
Four tips on how to cut down and quit smoking
Three in four smokers wish they had never picked up their first cigarette. Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. We share Lauren’s tips on how you can stop today.
1. Plan it
Set yourself a date within the next two
weeks when you are going to stop smoking. Having this in your calendar increases your chances of quitting and holds you accountable for your actions. To make this easier for yourself, remove all of your lighters, matches, ashtrays, cigarettes, and any other reminders of smoking that you may have from your house. This is the out of sight, out of mind approach, and should help to reduce your triggers and make it easier for you to quit.
2. Make a list
Write a list of all the reasons why you started smoking and then a list of all the reasons that you want to stop smoking. Compare the two, the reasons to stop will likely be longer and more impactful on your life and health than the reason why you started smoking. Keep this list handy or write it on your phone, as you may find it useful when you are having cravings and need some motivation. You might also find it useful to make a list of ways to distract yourself; these could be activities that you enjoy doing or new things that you want to try. Cooking, exercise and reading are a few examples.
3. Change your habits
People often still smoke because
they’ve formed a habit, and it has become part of their daily routine. Research has found that exercising helps to reduce the urge to some and can help the brain to produce anticraving chemicals.
Taking up exercise or a new hobby is a great way you can distract yourself from cravings, improve your fitness, and form a new healthy habit. Try and meet the physical activity guidelines of at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a week.
4. Get support
Build a support network around you. Make sure that people are aware that you’re stopping smoking, so they can support you through the process, or they may want to quit with you. Having support will motivate you to keep going and get you through the tough days. Use local stop smoking services or chat to your GP if you need any help.

WALL PANELLING THE WONDER OF
GET TO KNOW YOUR FLUTED FROM YOUR REEDED WITH NATUREWALL
Wall panelling has dominated interior trends over the last decade, and it’s easy to see why. When done well it adds interest, dimension and character wherever used.
But for homeowners considering taking the plunge, it can be daunting, especially with so much choice on the market. Fortunately, wall panelling experts Naturewall are on hand to explain the difference.
Charlie Farrar, Product Design Manager at Naturewall, said: “At Naturewall, we are big believers in making great design easy to achieve. For homeowners tackling wall panelling for the first time, it can be a minefield of information and in this guide we want to remove the jargon and help customers find their perfect panel.”
Fluted wall panels are created when vertical troughs, or concave curves, are carved into panelling.
Reminiscent of Roman columns, fluted panels create recesses that cascade striking shadows across walls. Playing with light and dark, these panels are bold and contemporary and bring strong visual appeal.
Reeded panels bring scalloped curves to walls. Round and smooth, they offer softness and subtle elegance, bringing a timeless feel to wall panelling. They are ideal for living spaces and bedrooms,
helping to evoke a sense of relaxation. And while reeded and fluted panels have curves aplenty, the same cannot be said for SlatWall. These contemporary beauties feature real wood veneered slats that are carefully bonded onto a recycled felt backing. They combine the natural beauty of real wood with strong vertical lines to bring a minimalist feel wherever they are used.
Charlie added: “Wall panelling is a great option for any home, but it’s important to find the right fit to complement the style and character of the home.”
Naturewall’s range of fluted, reeded and SlatWall panels are available now. As well as being easy to install, this fluted panelling is simple to customise to your style. Available primed or unprimed, these MDF panels are easy to customise to suit your design.
Invite a contemporary vibe into your space with reeded wood panels. Defined by vertical convex curves across the surface, this style features a ribbed texture that brings striking depth to walls.
For a stunning splashproof space, opt for SlatWall Waterproof Charcoal panelling. This style features a black wood effect and our signature slatted structure, providing a dose of drama that gives rooms a luxurious look.

Making More Room
Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.
Assess Feasibility
Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.
Plan Your Space
Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.
Structural Considerations
Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Lighting and Ventilation
Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Access
Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.
Utilities
Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.
Finishing Touches
Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.
Budget
Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.
Professional Help
Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.
By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

Entertaining this season? Discover the top tips to give your dining table an earthy, rustic touch.
Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:
“The arrival of autumn brings to mind cosy evenings, earthy foliage and rustic accents. As a season, it marks the start of many intimate gatherings and dinner parties. Aside from what’s on the menu, your dining table décor sets the vibe of the season which has risen in popularity over the last few years.
Online searches for ‘autumn home décor’ have surged, with it reaching an all-time high of 100 on Pinterest Trends in September last year. We’re expecting it to rise again this year, with high search volumes on Pinterest in July and August. Other autumn searches are also trending, with searches for ‘autumn home’ and ‘autumn table decorations’ getting high search volumes.
Even though autumn décor evokes images of warmth and comfort, there’s a certain melancholic and nostalgic feeling that captures this time of year. The trending colour palettes reflect that, with earth tones taking centre stage. Dark brown tones serve as the solid base, while burgundy, forest green, olive green and burnt orange can be introduced through accents like placemats and tableware. With the colour palette decided, capture the feeling of autumn by bringing the outdoors inside. Want to bring that crisp autumn feel to your dining table? Start with natural textures
like linen or wicker. A linen tablecloth sets the scene and lays the foundation to decorate and experiment.
The natural textures that you pick should be part of the colour palette you’re envisioning. Are you in the mood for burnt orange accents? Or do you prefer a more forest-inspired tablescape? You can bring in miniature pumpkin accessories or red ferns to bring out the earthy, rustic feel. Another way is to bring in pinecones or decorative foliage for a leafy tablescape. Besides decorations, you can create contrast with tableware. Coloured glassware is one way to do this and highlights the moody autumn vibe. Ambience plays a key role in getting your tablescape to look the part and this is where lighting comes in. Shorter days mean longer evenings, creating a more intimate atmosphere. Go for warm white light bulbs or lamps with a temperature that varies between 3300 and 4000k, which makes the room feel soft and inviting. Placing warm table lamps on your dining table will make your dinner party feel like a cosy bar.
Candles are another way to jazz up your décor and add depth to your room. You can create a layered look with tealights and fairy light candles on your dining table. Choose candles that complement your colour palette and candle holders that contrast the look - go for black or metallic for that extra bit of edge.” or more tips on how to decorate your dining room, check out our modern dining room ideas guide.

Getting your car looking like new
After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.
The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.
The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.
Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent corrosion.
Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a highquality, durable finish. Finally, a clear
coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.
Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.

Is Resolution Together right for you?
Emma Davies, Partner in Nelsons’ Family Law Team, explains the Resolution Together approach to separation.
“Suppose you’re separating and wondering how to move forward best. You may have heard about Resolution Together – an approach where one specially trained family lawyer works with both of you to help reach a fair agreement.
It’s designed for couples who want to avoid conflict, reduce costs, and stay in control of their separation. But is it right for you? Let’s consider what Resolution Together involves and help you decide with a quick checklist.”
What is Resolution Together?
Resolution Together is a one-lawyer model developed by Resolution, the national organisation of family justice professionals. It allows separating couples to work with a single lawyer who provides legal information and guidance to both parties, helping them reach joint decisions.
It’s not mediation, and it’s not traditional representation. Instead, it’s a collaborative process built on transparency, trust, and shared goals.
Is Resolution Together right for you? Take the Quiz
Answer the following questions to see if Resolution Together might be a good fit:
When it might not be suitable
Resolution Together isn’t right for every couple. It may not be appropriate if:
• There are concerns about safety, coercion, or imbalance of power.
• One party is unwilling to disclose financial information.
• You need independent legal advice or representation.
• There’s a high level of conflict or mistrust.
In these cases, other options like mediation, collaborative law, or traditional representation may be more suitable.
Next steps
If you’re curious about Resolution Together, we offer initial discovery consultations to help you explore whether it’s the right fit. We’ll explain the process, answer your questions, and help you decide how to move forward.
You don’t have to navigate separation alone—and you don’t have to go to court to find a fair solution.
Question Yes No
Are you both willing to work together to reach a fair outcome?
Do you trust each other enough to share financial information openly?
Are you both committed to avoiding court if possible?
Do you want to reduce legal costs and keep control of the process?
Are you comfortable with one lawyer guiding both of you (rather than having separate lawyers)?
Are there no safeguarding concerns (e.g. domestic abuse or coercion)?
Are you both able to communicate respectfully, even if things are difficult?
If you answered “Yes” to most of these questions, Resolution Together could be a great option for you.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the
buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

Walking in memory of her Nana Iris, Nana Jean, Grandad Ralph and all ‘Our Dementia Choir’ members, Vicky said: “The sense of togetherness you get from this event is very special. I always look forward to Memory Walk as the atmosphere is full of understanding, love and music!
“It was great to walk side-by-side, sharing experiences along the way with others affected by dementia. No-one should face dementia alone.
“I walked not only for my grandparents’ past, but also in support of the wonderful singers and carers of ‘Our Dementia Choir’ past and present who are a constant source of joy and inspiration.
“I’m proud to support the amazing work that Alzheimer’s Society does, funding research and helping people through some of the hardest and most frightening times by providing services that are such a lifeline for people living with dementia and their carers.”
On arrival, walkers were treated to a live performance from Vicky McClure’s ‘Our Dementia Choir’ together with local children from Banks Road Primary School who are learning all about dementia and how to become dementia friendly.
Joining the Memory Walk in Nottingham at the weekend was Ella Hendry (22)
who was walking in memory of her grandad. Ella said: “Sadly, my grandad passed away from this awful disease during the pandemic, which was incredibly hard for me and my family. When I saw that Alzheimer’s Society was hosting a Memory Walk in Nottingham, I knew straight away that I wanted to get involved and raise money to make sure that other families have access to the best help and support when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. I couldn’t have asked for a better grandad and I’m so glad that I got to walk today with my child to celebrate and remember my grandad’s life.”
People taking part completed either a short 2km stroll around the lake or a 6km route, taking them around more of the park including grass and woodland paths. Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Nottingham Memory Walk brought together people carers, people living with dementia, volunteers, fundraisers and Alzheimer’s Society staff who all have a role to play in tackling the biggest health crisis of our time. There are currently around a million people living with the condition, including an estimated 74,000 in the East Midlands with thousands more caring for someone with dementia.
Alzheimer’s Society hoped to raise more than £200,000 through the fundraising and donations made by walkers in Nottingham. The money raised will help people affected by dementia to support them through the hardest and most frightening times.
Tom Carter, Alzheimer’s Society Local Services Manager for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who came out to join us at Nottingham Memory Walk this weekend. It was incredibly moving, atmospheric and uplifting – by taking part, our incredible supporters are a real force for change.
"It will take a society to beat dementia and Memory Walk is a perfect example of what society in action looks like. Everyone who walks, donates or supports is part of the fight to beat dementia.”

Navigating Life Transitions as a Neurodivergent Woman
At Purple House Clinic Nottingham, we often meet women who have spent years navigating life without realising they are neurodivergent. For many, the journey to understanding conditions such as autism or ADHD begins not in childhood, but much later—often during a life transition that brings long-standing challenges into sharper focus.
Neurodivergence in women and girls is frequently overlooked. Unlike the more stereotypical, male-based presentations, neurodivergent women may not show obvious behavioural difficulties. Instead, they often internalise their struggles, leading to anxiety, exhaustion, and misdiagnoses. Many go through childhood and early adulthood undiagnosed, despite experiencing significant difficulties.
Neurodivergence isn’t fixed or onesize-fits-all. It can present differently across individuals and evolve throughout life. As women move through key stages - education,
careers, relationships, parenting, or midlife - the way they experience their neurodivergence often shifts.
In childhood, many girls become adept at masking, using social mimicry to blend in, sometimes at great personal cost. They may appear to be coping well, while privately feeling overwhelmed or isolated. These early adaptations can delay recognition and support.
Later, in adult life, challenges often intensify. Even women who have excelled academically may struggle in the workplace, where unspoken social rules and executive function demands can lead to burnout and low selfesteem. These issues are frequently mislabelled as depression or anxiety, rather than being seen in the context of neurodivergence.
Motherhood can further magnify these difficulties—heightening sensory sensitivities, emotional demands, and organisational pressures.
Without a proper understanding of their neurotype, many mothers suffer in silence, feeling as though they’re failing when in fact they’re unsupported.
At Purple House Clinic Nottingham, we work closely with neurodivergent women at every stage of life. Our experienced clinicians provide tailored assessments, therapy, and neuroaffirming care that recognises each person’s unique strengths and challenges.
Life transitions don’t have to be faced alone.
With compassionate, person-centred support, neurodivergent women can move from simply surviving to truly thriving—on their own terms.

Hollygate Memorial woodlands
A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services.
Since then, we have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance our service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.
We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.
We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and
spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.
There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.
There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family
plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.
Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.
Please feel free to contact any of our offices below for more information.

father of three who was left in a coma and nearly died after catching flu is urging others to get vaccinated.
Aaron Clark 42, a garage-owner from Sutton-in-Ashfield, spent 16 days in an induced coma in King’s Mill Hospital’s intensive care unit as a result of flu in December last year. He was on a ventilator to help his breathing and a dialysis machine as his kidneys weren’t working properly.
Aaron said: “One of the first things I remember when I came round was a doctor saying to me ‘well done, we don’t have many people come back from as far as you did’.
“I had a really close call.”
Now Aaron, who had no underlying medical conditions and considered himself to be fit and healthy, is backing calls from doctors and the NHS for eligible people to take up the offer of a free flu vaccine.
He said: “I felt not quite right on the Saturday. On the Monday and Tuesday, I was in bed with what felt like flu symptoms. On the Wednesday I had what I thought was a rash, which prompted my partner Alix to ring 111 and they told me to go to the GP.
“When I got to the GP my blood oxygen levels were 72% (95% to 100% is considered normal). The reading was so low that the doctor tried three different

monitors because they thought the equipment wasn’t working properly. Within a few hours I went from thinking I had a nasty cold to being in an induced coma and on a ventilator in intensive care. I didn’t appreciate how serious flu could be.”
Ward Leader Phaedra Kay, whose team cared for Aaron while he was in the intensive care unit, said: “Aaron had multi-organ failure when he came to us and he was very seriously ill. He’s a fit and well gentleman normally and he developed a very serious type of flu, which can be extremely life-threatening for some patients.”
Aaron admits that it is difficult to put everything that happened during his illness in the correct order and he is grateful for diaries and journals kept by the hospital and Alix. He recently visited the intensive care unit to meet some of the team who cared for him to help him fully understand the time he spent in hospital and to thank the team involved in his recovery. Alix, a local artist, presented some beautiful bespoke paintings which now take pride of place in the unit.
It’s been a long journey to become well again and Aaron’s recovery is still continuing- the knock-on effects of being ill for so long were in his opinion the worst part. Having lived through the experience, Aaron has vowed to get his flu jab this year – and is urging others to do the same. Aaron said: “I’d never had the flu before – in fact I’d barely even had a
cold and hadn’t needed to visit my GP since 2017.
“It was a shock just how serious it can be and how quickly everything escalated - from thinking I might stay in bed for a little while to being whisked off in an ambulance and put to sleep.
“It shocked a lot of my family, friends and colleagues when they heard that flu was the reason I’d been so unwell and out of action for four months.”
Respiratory Consultant Dr Mark Roberts explains, “While influenza is a mild illness for most people, it can cause severe illness and can be life-threatening, especially in the elderly and others who are vulnerable. Having the vaccine often reduces symptoms if you are affected by the virus. The vaccine is very effective at preventing the spread of the virus within the community. This helps us to protect our patients and families.”
The NHS is reminding people that the flu vaccination is the best protection against becoming seriously ill. It is free for those most at risk, including older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions.
Flu vaccines are available at GP Practices, community pharmacies and school vaccination services. You can find out more information about eligibility at www.nhs.uk/nhsservices/vaccination-and-bookingservices/book-flu-vaccination

AWARDED BEST NATURAL BURIAL GROUND BY THE AGFD
Tithe Green Natural Burial has been named Best Natural Burial Ground at the annual awards hosted by the Association of Green Funeral Directors (AGFD). This national recognition highlights Tithe Green’s dedication to providing families with sustainable, dignified, and meaningful alternatives to traditional funerals.
Established as one of the UK’s first natural burial grounds, Tithe Green offers a choice of woodland and meadow settings for natural burial and ashes interments. The sites have become a place where families can find peace, comfort and connection with nature when saying goodbye to loved ones.

LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE
The
Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Charity
is
gearing up to save more lives than ever with the addition of a second helicopter.
The charity, which saves lives across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire has secured a spot on the production line in Italy for a new helicopter at a cost of around £7m. LNAA currently operates with one helicopter, its iconic yellow AW169. But as mission numbers rise, the doctors, paramedics and pilots who respond to an average of four missions a day, know that there are patients they can’t currently get to.
Medical Director Dr Gareth Davies said: “We want to bring our skill and experience to the side of more patients, more quickly, and across a wider area. A second aircraft is a game-changer for these patients and for us as we expand what we can do to meet the needs of the communities that we serve.”
The charity is completely funded by donations and the project has taken flight thanks to initial fundraising efforts which have raised £4m.
The Michael Cornish Charitable Trust and BNA Charitable Incorporated Organisation have each given £1m towards the second helicopter. The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust and Nottingham based company Experian have also made generous contributions to the project, along with LNAA contributing thanks to its fundraising efforts.
Michael Cornish said: “Our charitable trust has existed to help charities who have a
tangible, positive impact on communities, including saving lives. LNAA does this 365 days of the year, across a vast area, so it fits entirely with our vision. We are excited to be part of something that will unquestionably help to save lives.”
A spokesperson for BNA said: “BNA have been a major contributor over the years and are pleased to have generously donated to this important strengthening of LNAA’s cover of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.”
A spokesperson for The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust said: “The Trust has been a major supporter of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance over the years because we know how important the charity is in being able to deliver life-saving care on the scene. We're pleased that we have been able to make a sizeable donation to help ensure that LNAA can get to more patients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire”.
The plan for a second helicopter emerged after data gathered by the charity showed there are people in need who the service cannot get to with just one aircraft. In the last five years, the charity has seen a 135 percent increase in mission numbers and recent data has shown that there’s an average of 1.4 missions every day the crews are not able to currently respond to. The second helicopter will be an AW109 Grand New model and is scheduled to land at the charity in summer 2027 with a view to being fully operational by autumn that year.
LNAA’s CEO Karen Jobling said: “We are absolutely delighted to share this incredible news with our supporters. The addition of a second helicopter means that we will be able to attend more emergencies, more quickly, and provide critical care to more patients who might not otherwise have access in time. This is truly a life-changing development for the communities we are here to serve.
“Every life we save is a thanks to the people who support LNAA. The second helicopter will belong to everyone who has ever donated, fundraised, or supported us in any way. It will save many more lives, and we could not achieve this without them.”
