THEATRE OF SANCTUARY

Nottingham Playhouse has set up a brand-new programme for women refugee and asylum seekers, as part of its renewed Theatre of Sanctuary status. Working with Second Chance Learning Academy, the course was funded by the Welcome Grant from Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service.

The programme was set up to support women develop confidence in using spoken English. The sessions let them safely explore language in a single gender environment.

Between 12-15 women have attended each week, from a wide variety of origin countries, with a freelance participation leader providing stimulus materials and ideas. This can range from spoken word games to improve English language to expressing emotions and experiences through physical movement. Shugufa Afzali and a number of volunteers from Second Chance Learning Academy supported the sessions. The group also visited Nottingham Castle and Nottingham Contemporary, to broaden their horizons on other cultural venues and introduce them to unfamiliar places they may not have felt comfortable visiting previously.

Some of the group also watched A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini recently, a play set during the Afghanistan war, which resonated with many of them. It was also an opportunity to attend a theatre production for the first time, and the feedback was that they felt very welcomed and safe.

Tara Lopez, Director of Participation at Nottingham Playhouse, said: “We were thrilled to be able to work with Second Chance Learning Academy to support

their work around Women's Confidence with a bespoke series of theatre sessions. Theatre can be a wonderful vehicle for increasing confidence and allowing space for social connection. We hope the project did this for all the participants, as well as increasing their connection with Nottingham Playhouse and the cultural sector as a whole.

“Projects like this are a huge part of how we can ensure new arrivals to Nottingham feel welcome and accepted within our venue - an ongoing commitment that we have made as part of being a Theatre of Sanctuary.”

The participants have found the sessions provide a new and engaging way to learn English and develop self-confidence. Quotes from participants include:

First participant: “The group is very useful for me. The teaching is new and different. Normally, you write all the time and save it, and when you finish, you don’t remember anything. But the group very useful because they have new good ideas for teaching.”

Participant two: “For me, the group is very excellent group because our teacher is best one, her teaching process is very nice. It encourages and enhances the ability to have conversation with others and interact confidently.

In this class, we behave like we did in our childhood. We can relax, no tension, forget about family, we enjoy it here like we are small kids.”

In addition to the Women’s Confidence group, Nottingham Playhouse has also hosted Second Chance Learning’s two International Women’s Day events, a Job Fair and an Asylum Seeker’s Welcome Event. It is hoped that the Women’s Confidence in Theatre Group can continue with further funding. Second Chance Learning are launching a new project for Women Asylum Seekers in September, which will also be hosted by Nottingham Playhouse. Other ongoing projects include the Conversation Café, a weekly drop-in facility open to all refugees and asylum seekers, to help improve their English, meet others and feel welcome in a safe space.

GOOSE FAIR

Enjoy all the fun of the fair at the Forest Recreation Ground this autumn

Goosey the Goose Fair goose has taken up its perch on the Mansfield Road roundabout once again, heralding the return of one of the largest travelling funfairs in Europe later this month. With more than 350 rides and attractions and thrills aplenty for all ages, Goose Fair has been staged annually in Nottingham since at least 1284.

Half a million visitors are expected to attend the ten-day event. The consumer spend for last year’s fair was estimated to be £10 million, including £1.2 million spent on transport to and from the event. Goose Fair generated a significant economic uplift for the city, bringing more local and regional visitors to the area.

New rides this year include the steampunk-themed Time Machine, and Skyfall, the world’s tallest portable drop tower standing at an impressive 80-metres high. There will also be lots of returning favourites such as Atmosfear, Matterhorn, Starflyer, Magic Mouse, Aerospace, and a giant wheel giving panoramic views across the fair and the city beyond. All the Goose Fair classics will be in attendance too, such as Waltzers, Dodgems, Gallopers, and the Cake Walk – the only ride still operating that featured when the fair was held at Old Market Square – plus lots of side-show games such as hook-a-duck, hoopla, darts, and basketball.

Following a hugely successful trial last year, SEND sessions will be returning for 2025, taking place on Sundays from 12pm-1pm. These sessions allow children

and people with special educational needs and disabilities to enjoy the fair without the loud noises and bright lights.

Food is always a highlight at the fair and along with the traditional fairground favourites of mushy peas and Cocks-on-Sticks, visitors will be able to eat their way around the world with a diverse range of food from Greek and Caribbean to Chinese cuisines.

Baresca

Simple Spanish-style eats are served in this relaxed yet lively bar inspired by the spirit of tapas, but bold in taking influence from international flavours.

Baresca isn’t new to the cities tapas offering but I have visited more times in the last couple of years than I had in the previous 7 it has been open and so looking for an alternative to a sunday lunch while in town we headed there. Tapas restaurants meet a couple of my ‘nice to have’ criteria immediately (likely to serve nice fizzy wine/can serve a small snack to a 3 course meal) and Baresca also serves families really well. On the Sunday we visited there was an equal mix of couples and families with children dining.

On arrival (having not booked) the host asked another table

that had just been seated if they would mind relocating to the window so we could slot the pram in next to the table. I inwardly cringed – hating my reproductive decisions putting anyone out in any way. But the world is full of kind and generous people and the couple at the table happily moved so we could fit the pram in. A warmth washed over me and I thanked everyone involved at least 3 more times than was necessary.

On this Sunday Baresca were offering a ‘sunday lunch’ option with a fixed price that involved 2 roast meat options with a spanish twist, patatas bravas and a vegetable side. I was tempted

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

but The Northerner wanted tapas so we ordered from the main menu and conversation turned to why we went to Baresca so often.

Much like anywhere you visit regularly we have ‘favourite’ dishes and proceeded to order them all and added a flatbread to ‘expand our horizons’. The flatbread was nice but the ratio of pesto was off, it overpowered the subtle cheese and thin bread. The tomatoes were the star, sweet and seasoned well, something that shouldn’t be as rare a phenomenom as it is.

The meatballs were soft and had a lovely spicing, finished well by the grated cheese on top they were my favourite dish. The patatas bravas were elevated by a rich tomato stew with a perfect amount of heat and crispy, fluffy potatoes.

The fish tacos could have done with a few more leaves but the fish was perfectly cooked and the pickled onions added the right amount of vinegar to cut through the rich mayo. You can get more authentic taco’s elsewhere (as evidenced by the taco shell) but you cannot fault the flavour of these and they don’t end up all over you when you eat them.

The salmon tikka had the powdery crunch of a dry rub but this didn’t overwhelm the fish, again this could have done with a few more leaves but I could just as easily criticise our ordering (complete lack of vegetable dishes) and the menu’s lack of a salad option.

The sweet and sticky crispy PX beef has been on the menu since the restaurant opened and is as good today as it has always been. I am baffled at how a tapas resturant (along with others in the city) can make this dish better than most native restaurants. The only element of the dish that I can see changed is the portion sizes are slighty smaller – not something I have an issue with but this might put off hungrier dinners.

After we finished the final part of the ‘Why do we come to Baresca so much?’ question was answered, the dishes are all simple, taste great and the whole experience is EASY. Fancy a drink at the bar with a few olives? EASY. Sunday lunch without a booking? EASY. Weather a bit warmer and want to sit outside – EASY. Kids in tow and want a pizza flatbread and chips without subjecting parents to crap food – EASY. Baby changing on the same floor as the restaurant with a toilet for parents as well – EASY. And I like easy.

Those who enjoy a weekly ritual of enjoying a sumptuous steak dinner can now visit the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill on Wollaton Street where a special Thursday steak and wine offer has been put together to satisfy those early weekend steak fixes.

Jolanta Szulczynska, food and beverage manager said: “Steak has remained one of the most popular dinner items for decades and the UK’s appetite for a juicy, expertly cooked cut is as popular as ever.

“The idea behind our new Steak Night is to give guests the chance to kick off their weekends by enjoying a delicious but simply cooked steak in the glamourous surroundings of a Marco Pierre White restaurant.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a meal out, afterwork treat or even the date night you’ve talked about for months. We’d like to think we’re making Thursday officially Steak Night here in Nottingham.”

Guests who pop in to will be able to enjoy steak and wine which includes a flat iron or rump steak, Koffmann chips and a drink for just £19.95.

Jolanta added: “Steak and chips is a perpetual favourite among our guests. What we find is that to really make the dish sing you need the best quality meat.

“We use the finest quality reserve beef from Campbell Brothers which has been providing steaks since 1902. The exclusively grass-fed steer and heifer cattle is traditionally aged and then graded to Marco’s exacting standards. Finally, it’s seasoned and cooked to the guest’s liking before resting by our expertly trained grill chefs all of which helps elevate guests’ midweek dining experience.

“Our restaurant is all about quality food being served by a friendly team in an inspiring environment and this offer makes a visit here even more enjoyable and we can’t wait to welcome guests old and new to enjoy a fabulous juicy steak dinner.”

Obam Stairlifts Celebrates 25th Birthday

Obam Stairlifts celebrates its 25th birthday in August 2025 by giving back to the community through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The family business is donating two new straight stairlifts to nominated causes in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, marking a quartercentury of helping people stay in the homes they love.

Who can nominate someone for a free straight stairlift?

Anyone can nominate someone they know who would benefit from a straight stairlift donation. You might know an elderly neighbour struggling with stairs, a family member recovering from surgery, or someone with mobility challenges who can't afford this life-changing

equipment. The nomination process is simple and open to everyone.

What straight stairlifts are being donated?

Two high-quality straight stairlifts will be donated as part of this birthday celebration. The first is a new Access BDD HomeGlide Extra Straight Stairlift featuring a powered swivel seat. This model offers the perfect marriage of design and functionality for any straight staircase, with a slim aluminium rail that gives a modern, clean look. The HomeGlide stairlift includes a retractable seatbelt for security, a comfortable soft-touch joystick that needs minimal effort

to operate, and battery power so it works even during power cuts. It can carry up to 25 stone (160kg) and fits staircases as narrow as 740mm (29 inches).

The second donation is a new Platinum Stairlifts Ergo Straight Stairlift with a powered swivel seat. This model stands out with its customisable options, including an ergonomic seat design crafted for superior comfort during transit. The seat height, arms, backrest and footplate can be adjusted to provide comfort for most users of various shapes and sizes.

How will Obam choose the recipients?

Obam Stairlifts will carefully review all nominations and select two recipients. Each chosen nominee will receive a free straight stairlift including a 12-month parts and labour warranty. Obam will conduct a site survey before installation to ensure each recipient gets the right product for their needs and that the stairlift is suitable for the user.

Why is Obam making this donation?

This gesture reflects Obam's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and dedication to helping people maintain their independence at home. Founded in 2000 by brothers Chris and Steve Butroid alongside business partners Lee Ogden and Pete Morley, Obam has built its reputation on delivering personal, reliable service to customers across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

The company's directors have almost 100 years of combined experience in the stairlift and adaptations market. As an approved Access BDD

dealer and Platinum Stairlifts Approved Platinum Partner, Obam only employs salaried surveyors/ advisors, not salespeople, ensuring customers get the best solution for their needs.

What makes Obam different from other stairlift companies?

Obam's independence allows them to access the best mobility aids from top manufacturers worldwide. They work extensively with local authorities, occupational therapists and private individuals to deliver customised solutions for even the most challenging access issues. The company holds contracts with many local councils and participates in the Disabled Facilities Grants Scheme.

Their award-winning service includes true 24/7 engineer support, not just a call centre. This means help is always available, even on Christmas and Bank Holidays. All their mobility products come with a minimum 12-month warranty, and their manufacturer-trained engineers carry out routine servicing and repairs.

The nomination and selection process coincides with Obam's 25th birthday celebrations.

Terms and conditions apply, including the requirement for a site survey before installation. Chris Butroid, Managing Director of Obam Stairlifts, said: "Reaching our 25th birthday is a milestone we're incredibly proud of. We've spent a quarter-century helping people stay in their homes safely and comfortably. This donation scheme allows us to thank the community that has supported us throughout our journey. Don't let this opportunity pass you by - nominate someone today at obam.co.uk/birthday and help them regain their independence at home.”

Property Showcase

West Bridgford is

a vibrant suburban town located just south of the River Trent in Nottinghamshire.

Though often considered part of the greater Nottingham area due to its proximity—lying less than two miles from the city centre—it maintains its own distinct identity, blending a suburban calm with the amenities and energy of a thriving urban centre. West Bridgford is officially within the borough of Rushcliffe, and it serves as the administrative centre of the district.

The area is particularly known for its affluent character, attractive tree-lined avenues, and a strong sense of community. It's one of Nottinghamshire’s most desirable residential locations, popular with families, professionals, and retirees alike. This appeal is largely driven by its excellent schools, parks, amenities, and strong transport links. West Bridgford also enjoys a reputation for being a safe and clean area with a strong local economy and well-maintained public spaces.

One of the town’s most distinctive features is Central Avenue, its bustling high street and commercial heart. Central Avenue offers a lively mix of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, and salons, alongside well-known retail names. The area has a cosmopolitan feel, with a wide variety of cuisines and boutique stores contributing to the town's character. Farmers' markets and food festivals are also held regularly, showcasing local produce and artisanal products.

West Bridgford has a strong café culture, with numerous places to enjoy brunch, coffee, or evening drinks, making it a social hub for both locals

and visitors. In recent years, the hospitality sector has flourished here, with many establishments offering al fresco dining and attracting a broad demographic, from young professionals to families and older residents.

The area is also known for its sporting pedigree. Just across the River Trent from West Bridgford lies a cluster of world-famous sports venues. Most notably, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world, is located here and serves as the home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. It regularly hosts international Test matches and one-day games. Not far

away is the City Ground, home to Nottingham Forest Football Club, and also nearby is Meadow Lane, where Notts County - one of the oldest professional football clubs - plays. The National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, a short drive away, further enhances the area’s sporting credentials by offering facilities for rowing, kayaking, and other water-based activities.

Education is a major draw for families moving to West Bridgford. The town is served by several highly regarded primary and secondary schools. Notable among these is West Bridgford School, consistently ranked among

the top-performing secondary schools in Nottinghamshire. Other schools like Rushcliffe School and The Becket School also have strong reputations. The educational standards, coupled with plentiful green spaces, make West Bridgford particularly attractive for those seeking a familyfriendly environment.

Parks and open spaces play a vital role in the town’s identity. West Bridgford is dotted with several parks, most notably Bridgford Park, which lies just off Central Avenue and is a focal point for community events and leisure. The park features formal gardens, open green space, a play area, and the West Bridgford Library, which itself acts as a community hub with exhibitions, children’s activities, and study spaces.

Along the River Trent, the Embankment provides scenic walks, cycling paths, and places for riverside picnics, further enhancing the area's appeal for those who

enjoy outdoor activities. Transport links in West Bridgford are excellent. Although it does not have its own train station, Nottingham Station is only a short distance away and is easily accessible via frequent bus routes or a short car journey. From there, trains connect to major cities such as London, Birmingham, Leeds, and Sheffield. Road access is equally good, with the A52 and A60 running nearby, linking the town to the national road network. There are also numerous cycling routes, and the town has made efforts in recent years to promote sustainable travel.

Housing in West Bridgford is diverse, ranging from grand Victorian and Edwardian homes to modern apartments and townhouses. The property market is competitive, with demand consistently high, especially in areas close to good schools and Central Avenue. Architectural character is wellpreserved in many parts of the town, with leafy streets and well-kept gardens giving it a distinctly upmarket suburban charm.

Culturally, the area is active and engaged. In addition to markets and food festivals, West Bridgford hosts regular events including outdoor cinema screenings, live music, community fairs, and seasonal celebrations such as the Christmas lights switch-on. There is a strong sense of local

pride, and this is reflected in the active participation of residents in community groups, environmental initiatives, and local governance.

Education

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A SECONDARY SCHOOL

Choosing a secondary school is one of the most significant decisions a family will make. It is not just about the next few years of learning and growth; it is about laying the foundation for a bright future. Henry Price, Headmaster of Oakham School, shares some valuable advice on what to consider when embarking on this journey.

Start with the Big Questions

Single-sex or co-education? Boarding or day? These choices shape your child’s experience and friendships. At Oakham School, we believe that boys and girls thrive when they live and learn together – whether day or boarding pupils – in a full boarding environment.

When you Visit

Observe how pupils interact, how staff engage, and the general tone of the school. Does it feel purposeful and warm? Look for authenticity, not perfection. Are pupils happy, engaged, and proud of their environment? Facilities matter in how they support learning and wellbeing. Look for spaces that feel utilised and well maintained.

Academic Breadth and Balance

Strong results matter, but a great school offers more than grades. Seek a curriculum that offers breadth and depth for your child, enriched by opportunities in sport, music, drama, and service. At Oakham, we offer A-levels, BTECs, and the IB Diploma to suit different learning styles and ambitions. We focus on developing skills like communication, research and self-management, as well as leadership, collaboration, and digital literacy. Our carefully

structured 6-day-a-week timetable creates space for learning beyond the classroom, supported study, and meaningful enrichment.

Outstanding Pastoral Care

Adolescence is a time of change. A school must provide a nurturing environment where pupils feel known, challenged, and supported. Ask about pastoral structures – who will care for your child day to day? At Oakham, we are proud of our house system and staff who provide a 24/7 culture of care.

Know Your Child and Be Open

Every child is different. Trust their instincts and consider where they will thrive. Be honest about their needs – academic, creative, or sporting –

and ask can the school cater for it? Be honest and open with them and expect the same in return. That kind of mutual understanding is the foundation of a successful partnership.

Trust Your Instincts

Above all, after a visit, ask yourself: did it feel right? Did the school reflect your values and understand your child? Look for trust, look for warmth, and above all, look for a place where your child can truly flourish and you feel comfortable supporting them.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING PRESENT

Schools place a lot of emphasis on school attendance - and for good reason. As a parent, of course you want your child to attend school regularly, but having the odd day off here and there doesn’t matter does it?

Taking too many “ad hoc” days off can have a major impact on a child’s success and can potentially hold them back educationally, socially and personally.

Whilst the government would expect every child to achieve 100% attendance rate, 95% attendance in school is still considered good. But even at 95% attendance, your child will have still missed 9 days of learning, which is equivalent to 50 hours of teaching. With 90% attendance, that doubles to nearly 100 hours of teaching! That’s a lot to catch up on, especially if your child is facing SATs or GCSEs and A-levels.

Data from a government report in 2019 showed that 84% of Key Stage 2 pupils who had 100% attendance achieved the expected standard, compared to 40% of pupils who were persistently absent across the key stage.* And that was before the repercussions of Covid and lockdown, which impacted a whole generation of children and

their education.

As a school with selective entry standards, at Nottingham Girls’ High School we see first hand what can happen to those who don’t attend school regularly. A child considered to be bright and talented can quickly fall behind, especially in literacy and maths, but also miss out socially and personally. Relationships with friends can suffer, alongside their academic performance which can impact their mental health. It’s a vicious circle which can be hard to break.

Whilst we don’t have all the answers, by offering an environment where girls are encouraged, inspired and love to learn, attendance does become easier to manage. A parent of two daughters at our school explains, “They love going to school and have seized the extensive opportunities, academic and vocational, available to them.”

Results, Recognition and Readiness at Trent College

Set within 45 acres of tree-lined grounds on the Nottingham-Derbyshire border, Trent College has marked a summer of celebration, from outstanding exam results to national recognition for its careers programme.

The school recently celebrated a 100% A Level pass rate, with over a third of grades at A* or A. The overwhelming majority of students applying to university secured places at their first-choice destination, including some of the UK’s most competitive courses and institutions. At GCSE, a quarter of all entries achieved the coveted top grades 8 or 9, and the school’s success was further recognised with a prestigious shortlisting for Independent School of the Year 2025 in the Student Careers category.

Central to this is Trent’s dedicated Careers Hub. From Year 7 onwards, pupils receive personalised guidance from a full-time, qualified careers team, supporting ambitions as varied as Oxbridge study, medicine abroad, gap years, overseas sports scholarships and apprenticeships. A success reflected in individual stories.

Senior Prefect Daniel Conway, at Trent since the age of seven, is heading to Southampton to study Aeronautics and Astronautics, “Trent always felt like home,” he said. Nikhil Bhanot secured a place at Liverpool to study Medicine, while

Head of School Kareena Gandhi is off to Manchester to read Management, “Trent is special because of the care shown by the teachers,” she said, “My lasting memory will be all the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Guest speakers, from West End performers to Army officers and NHS leaders, give students a taste of real-world experience, and former pupils, known as Old Tridents, also play a vital role in inspiring the next generation. This year’s ‘What’s My Line?’ event brought back 24 alumni including a criminal barrister, a platoon commander and a freelance illustrator. Year 10 pupil Katherine left the event full of ideas, “I always liked science. Now I think I could do something in that field,” she said, even considering a career in MI6 profiling.

With strong academic results, a vibrant programme of drama, music, sport and co-curricular activities, alongside an innovative careers provision and a close-knit community, Trent College is positioning itself as a school where ambition is nurtured and futures are launched.

Prospective families are invited to visit Trent College on Saturday 27th September for its annual Open Morning. Book your place at www.trentschools.net.

The college also secured a 98.9% pass rate in all A-Level and vocational courses, reflecting the high academic rigour that is expected. On average, a grade -B was achieved by students on A-Level courses in 2025 and a -Distinction (equivalent to a grade A) was achieved by students on vocational courses. Moreover, every student who wished to continue into higher education secured a university place.

Class Act for Sensory Learning

Cabins for Schools and Sensory Technology have partnered to launch a demonstration sensory cabin, designed to make high-quality sensory learning environments more accessible for schools to choose and install. To celebrate this collaboration, they are hosting a two-day “Discovery Event” in early October at their show site in Stapleford, where educators can experience firsthand how bespoke cabin solutions are transforming sensory provision in education.

The event will give headteachers, teachers and PTA members a first look at a bespoke sensory cabin. Running from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Wednesday 8 October and 12.30pm to 5.30pm on Thursday 9 October at the show site on Toton Lane, the free sessions offer one-hour bookable slots where visitors can explore the demonstration sensory room, , speak to education design and build experts, and learn about funding and planning options.

The new show cabin features a wide range of sensory equipment, from tactile panels and borealis tubes to interactive walls, floors and projectors. By opening the doors to local schools, Cabins for Schools hopes to continue to build partnerships and networking opportunities with teachers, PTAs and leaders. The partnership between Cabins for Schools and Sensory Technology was formed earlier this year, with both family-run firms recognising their shared values and commitment to going the extra mile for schools.

Anne-Marie Adams, Sales Manager at Cabins for Schools, said: “As an employee-owned, family-run business, our values are at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to partner with another local company that shares our commitment to brilliant service and going above and beyond for schools and educational settings. Schools shouldn’t have to project manage complex builds like sensory rooms – they should be free to focus on teaching. That’s where we step in, creating spaces that support children, particularly those with additional needs.”

Two Nottinghamshire family-run businesses are joining forces to raise the bar in sensory learning

Sensory Technology has been designing and installing sensory environments for schools across the UK for over two decades, delivering everything from multisensory, calming and immersive rooms to de-escalation and interactive spaces, even dark rooms for specialist needs.

Yet in many schools, converted spaces fall short, with some areas too small, poorly configured, or inadequately lit. The new modular sensory cabins solve these issues by offering fully bespoke spaces, crafted in 10-centimetre increments to ensure a perfect fit, inside and out. By combining Sensory Technology’s cutting-edge sensory equipment with Cabins for Schools’ craftsmanship, each cabin is tailored exactly to a school's needs, ensuring no compromises on quality, resulting in more effective, supportive environments that truly enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

Rob Howe, managing director of Sensory Technology, added: “From the moment we met the Cabins for Schools team earlier this year, it was obvious we were on the same page. The chance to work together on bespoke cabins to support the learning and growth of local students was an easy decision to make, and it means we can deliver something really special for schools,

without compromising on quality.”

Over the years, Cabins for Schools, which is part of Cabin Master and Arctic Cabins, has partnered with many schools to create cabins for a range of uses. Schools have transformed cabins into cosy reading nooks, dynamic forest-learning hubs, and break-out spaces, often incorporating SEND-focused design elements to support wellbeing and inclusion. For instance, George Spencer Academy in Nottingham has used its cabin as a nurturing environment that connects students with nature and supports social and emotional learning.

Established in 2020, Cabins for Schools has grown rapidly in popularity as demand for high-quality teaching and sensory spaces increases nationwide. The Discovery Days will also give schools the chance to network, share experiences and see how bespoke cabins can support both mainstream schools and special educational provision..

The show site is located at Cabin Master and Arctic Cabins on Toton Lane opposite the Japanese Water Gardens, in Stapleford, NG9 7JA.

AUTUMNAL APPLE DAY

ACTIVITIES WITH THE NATIONAL TRUST

Celebrate the bounty of the season with Apple Day activities in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. There’ll be beautiful displays, fruit pressing and tastings to try, as well as music and crafts, and even yoga for children. See what’s happening at these National Trust places near you this autumn.

Gunby Estate, Hall and Gardens, near Spilsby, Lincolnshire

Gunby Hall and Gardens will be celebrating the season in style on Sunday 28th September, from 10am to 4pm, with its much-loved Apple Day - a joyful tribute to heritage, flavour and the simple pleasures of autumn.

This year, visitors can discover over 50 varieties of apple, freshly picked from Gunby’s own orchards and gardens. Among them are some truly special cultivars, including the heritage Lincolnshire ‘Ellison’s Orange’, the rare and unusual ‘Penny Loaf’, and the ‘Hawthornden’, sometimes known as the Lincolnshire Pippin. The oldest variety grown at Gunby is the ‘Catshead’ apple, cultivated in the UK since 1629 — a living link to centuries of orchard tradition.

Craft and trade stalls will be dotted throughout the grounds, offering handmade goods, local produce and something for every taste. The house will be open for those curious about its stories, while the Orchard Gallery hosts a visually striking art display. With eight acres of gardens, from wildflower borders to tranquil ponds, the estate offers a peaceful escape into nature.

Sensible footwear and clothing suited to the weather are recommended. Standard admission applies; members and under-fives are free.

Clumber Park, Worksop, Nottinghamshire

With over 70 varieties of apples, including a National Collection, there is a lot to celebrate at Clumber Park when it comes to apples.

On Friday 17th & Saturday 18th October, there will be two days of celebrations full of apple-themed activities, demos and displays in the walled kitchen garden. Throughout both days enjoy apple pressing and

tasting, an Apple Trail, heritage apples for sale and a grafting demonstration table. In addition, there will a garden tour at 11.30 and a pruning talk at 14.00. Free event, no booking required, admission into the park applies.

The Workhouse & Infirmary, Southwell, Nottinghamshire

Running alongside Southwell's famous Bramley Apple Festival, 25th October, have fun and win a prize by taking part in the longest apple peel competition and enjoy some apple printing. We are delighted to announce the return of the Pauper Choir who will be performing a range of traditional and familiar songs throughout the day.

Playful yoga sessions will take place for children at 14.00 and join the volunteers for building tours at various times, including a BSL interpreted tour at 11.45.

Free event, no booking required. Admission charges apply to visit the property.

Woolsthorpe Manor, Belton Estate and Grantham House, Grantham, Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire’s other National Trust properties boast special apples of their own. Amongst them is one of the UK’s most famous apple trees, that which inspired Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity! You can find the inspirational tree in a peaceful orchard at Newton’s home, Woolsthorpe Manor near Grantham.

Nearby, the newly opened Grantham House features an apple tree-lined path through its stunning walled garden which can be enjoyed with free entry for everyone. Apples from both sites, as well as the orchard at Belton House, can be savoured in special cider produced by local company Zest Brewery, which is available to purchase from both Belton and Woolsthorpe.

Newark and Sherwood’s

What’s On website has officially launched, celebrating local events and activities with a vibrant new design to make it easier than ever to discover the best events, festivals and cultural experiences in the Newark and Sherwood district.

From family events to live music, sport, historical talks, exhibitions, walking tours, theatre performances and more, the website is a one-stop destination for everything happening in the area. You can access the website at: www.whatsonnewarkandsherwood.co.uk

The What’s On website, created by Newark and Sherwood District Council, will be the central hub for all events and activities in the area, aiming to raise awareness of them, showcasing the breadth of things to do in the district for both tourists and residents, while supporting organisers, visitor attractions, venues and local groups.

Visitors to the website can search for events by date, location or keyword. A colour coded calendar will show whether the event is based in Newark, Southwell or Sherwood and beyond. More details of the listing can then be viewed, which include timings, whether an event is free or how much it costs to purchase a ticket, as well as where to find out more.

Event organisers are invited to list their events to the website free of

charge, via a simple form which will then be uploaded into the website. Whether you’re running a free or ticketed event, the What’s On website is designed to support and celebrate all the activities on offer within the district.

Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “We are fortunate to have so many incredible visitor attractions and event organisers in our district, so I’m thrilled that the What’s On website will act as a go-to destination for people to find out everything that’s happening in the local area. There really is something for everyone, whether you are interested in art, music, theatre, sport, history or culture, you can plan for your summer and beyond with this easy-to-use platform. I encourage organisers and visitor attractions to make sure their events are uploaded – listing an event is absolutely free and simple to do!”

Jessica Dumoulin, Visitor Experience Manager at RSPB, which regularly hosts events in Sherwood Forest, says: “The What’s On website is a great way for visitors from the district and beyond to search for events that will suit their interests. It’s a great tool for discovery and we hope that this will help drive awareness of our events, particularly for people who may have never attended one at Sherwood Forest before.”

Much-loved children’s book illustrator Helen Oxenbury celebrated

in her first major solo exhibition.

This autumn, the Harley Gallery in Nottinghamshire will present the first major solo exhibition by awardwinning children’s book illustrator Helen Oxenbury. Helen Oxenbury: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Other Adventures will be on display from 4 October 2025 to 4 January 2026.

From playful babies to brave adventurers, Oxenbury’s characters have charmed generations of readers. This new exhibition features over 100 original illustrations from a career spanning five decades, including We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Farmer Duck, Alice in Wonderland, So Much, Big Mama Makes the World, and Oh Dear, Look What I Got!, her 2025 reunion with Bear Hunt author Michael Rosen published by Walker Books.

Visitors will go behind the pages of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt to discover Oxenbury’s creative process – from early pencil sketches and delicate, bookmark-sized landscapes to fullpage watercolours and unpublished illustrations. Highlights include a rare, early version of the story, in which the now-familiar family looks completely different.

One of the world’s most popular and acclaimed children’s book illustrators, Oxenbury was a pioneer of the baby board book, and the exhibition includes a selection of her early books created especially for babies and toddlers. She was the first UK illustrator to recognise the importance of making books for babies, and her work continues to bring parents and children together today.

At the centre of the gallery is a new sensory play space created by textile artist Ruth Waller. Taking inspiration from a range of Helen’s illustrations, the interactive installation will be filled with fluffy clouds, swishy, swashy grass, soft toy storytelling props and much more. The installation is designed for babies, adults and children alike to crawl, play, relax and read in the heart of the exhibition. “It is impossible,” Oxenbury famously told an interviewer, “to be too much on the side of the child.”

Throughout the exhibition visitors of all ages are invited to engage in the creative process of this much-loved artist – trying their hand at writing and illustrating their own stories inspired by Oxenbury’s inclusive and imaginative approach.

A new countryside trail, inspired by We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, will take families from the Harley Gallery through ‘swishy, swashy grass’ and ‘a big dark forest’ – ending with a bear in a ‘narrow, gloomy cave’ at Creswell Crags.

Harley Foundation Director Bryony Bond said “We’re thrilled to be presenting the first major exhibition of Helen’s work here in Nottinghamshire. An internationally renowned illustrator, Helen’s extraordinary talent has long deserved this spotlight and it’s remarkable that such a significant showcase hasn’t happened until now. This exhibition also reflects our ongoing commitment to celebrating the creativity and imagination of children’s book illustrators—artists whose work offers one of the most accessible introductions to

art, sparking curiosity and opening up new worlds for young minds.”

Helen Oxenbury: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Other Adventures is showing 4 October 2025 – 4 January 2026 at the Harley Foundation, North Nottinghamshire.

Alongside the exhibition there will be We’re Going on a Bear Hunt inspired countryside trail for families. The exhibition is free to enter and there is a large, free car park. The gallery is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm. Closed Mondays. This exhibition has been co-curated by Selina Skipwith with the support of Walker Books.

194 0 s Melton Mowbray PRESENTS A VINTAGE FESTIVAL

1940s Melton Mowbray is bringing the spirit of 1940s and 1950s Britain alive with a vintage festival here in Melton Mowbray at Play Park, and at the Stockyard on the weekend of May 9th/10th 2026, 10am - 5pm.

There will be a range of exciting events taking place all around the park, stretching into and through the main town centre, onto Nottingham Street and into the Stockyard, where you can step back into the 1950s.

The 1940s event has become a popular, annual attraction in the Melton Mowbray summer events calender. This year we wanted to bring the 40s & 50s together by holding a vintage festival to celebrate both eras with one big event.

With a packed vintage festival of entertainment throughout the weekend, including live music, singing and dancing. Living history re-enactor groups from all around the country, with vintage military and civilian vehicles from the 30s and 40s in the park, and 50s and 60s in the Stockyard. All this combined with a vintagefairground providing nostalgic fun for the whole family.

Walk from the 1930 & 40s in the park, along Nottingham Street and into the Stockyard and step into the 1950s & 60s.

The 1950s in Britain represented a pivotal ere characterised by significant social, economic, and cultural transformation. Emerging from the devastation of WW2, the nation gradually embarked on a path towards recovery, with a significant advancement in living standards.

The rise of youth culture was propelled by the unprecidented popularity of Rock 'n' Roll music and new fashion trends that signified cultural liberation, in essence the 1950s functioned as a crucial bridge between post-war recovery and the onset of modern life.

We want you to experience what life was like in the 1940s & 1950s with our Vintage Festival, and feel the atmosphere made possible through the victory in Europe. It will be packed with live entertainment, 40s & 50s traders, classic cars, iconic

hot rods and full of good old-fashioned family fun and entertainment. So get yourselves dressed up and enjoy the atmosphere from a period that introduced great fashion and music, that can't help but put a smile on your face!

Trying to make sense of certain things could place you into quite a spin. People come and go, goals are reassessed and the outcome is rarely the way you imagined it would be. Its a case of re-thinking, revising and retracing your steps in an attempt to see where you may have gone wrong previously. If anyone can make tough decisions when under duress, its you. Business and personal dealings will not be straightforward and without their complications, so its important that you refuse to give up at the first hurdle.

Domestic worries keep buzzing around in your head, but neither can you seem to make any positive headway. Not everyone will do things exactly to your your liking, so do show some understanding. Financially you are growing more ambitious and you can look forward to a socially demanding time where your company will be eagerly awaited by so many.

You may not appreciate others telling you how to live your life and constantly pointing out where you went wrong. Only you are walking your path and must remain true to yourself. Leave others to their own devices and if need be, cultivate some new friendships which will be more in keeping with your own thinking patterns. It is not necessary for you to bow down to anyone.

Stand back from what you have been doing over recent weeks and take a break from some of the stress and pressure you have somehow managed to put yourself under. You’re turning over a new leaf and striking a aigh price. This is a time for happy sharing with loved ones, but its also time to take stock of what is important and what can be left to simmer on the back burner.

The pressure will lift regarding one particular personal problem enabling you to make some fresh new plans more in keeping with your requirements. Some things can be harder to face than others. Add plenty of variety to your days, stop dwelling on the past and start thinking about longer term projects. A romantic or financial risk will work to your advantage.

If you are honest about what is wrong with your life, then you can work on discovering ways of making some overdue changes. If a plan doesn’t flow, then don’t go. Romantically, there is magic in the air of the kind that makes anything seem possible. Make a clean break with the past and start as you mean to go on in any new relationship. Sometimes miracles do happen and dreams do come true.

Prepare yourself for a big adventure as you begin to put an amazing plan into action that will cause quite a stir in certain quarters. This is not the time to reveal your most innermost thoughts. Not everyone will understand your logic or reasoning as to why you intend to take a certain course of action, but most importantly, you must do what feels right for you. This is now your time.

You are making a big effort to get on top of jobs and put your affairs in order. It's important that you decide exactly what your particular new normal is to be. It's highly unlikely that you will return to your old way of life because there are too many exciting opportunities awaiting you on the horizon. A domestic worry will finally reach a conclusion.

There are times when you must work on building up your confidence in areas you have recently neglected. A major change for the better awaits you regarding a professional matter. Some astonishing news will not only put your mind at rest, but it will also spur you along to start over again, only this time, doing things so much differently.

Work issues loom ahead and the pressure is on for you to address issues as they present themselves. Dealing with snobby people who think they know it all will prove difficult, but you will find a way. Your mind will be made up regarding a domestic or romantic matter and there will be no turning back this time. You may get word from past acquaintance or friends, but only you can decide what you want to do.

Someone you no longer wish to communicate with or stay in touch with refuses to take the hint, probably because they are thick skinned and have no embarrassment. There is excellent news on the horizon that will affect your career and financial prospects. There are lots of new beginnings to look forward to, so its important to exercise patience.

Its important that you deal with someone's tantrum firmly by putting down a few solid boundaries. Refuse to be manipulated into doing stuff you know is wrong for you, but doing it anyway just to keep the peace. If you are experiencing money worries, this is the perfect time to make a bold attempt to resolve them once and for all. Take a new approach to a situation that has been worrying you lately.

Our venues and locations showcase Ontario at its best - sparkling white in the snow, gloriously golden in the fall and sun kissed in summer - we're always on the lookout for the extraspecial.

So whether you choose a waterside gazebo, an open summer sky, a carpet of freshly fallen leaves or a blanket of crisp snow with just the two of you, a small intimate group or a larger party, Maple Leaf Weddings is right for you.

your wedding day is the one day in your life when you should live your dream

YOUR Dream WEDDING VENUE

CHOOSING A VENUE IS PERHAPS THE BIGGEST PART OF PLANNING YOUR WEDDING

Once you have decided on a location, you can begin to incorporate some of your other plans, deciding on everything from your caterer to your centre pieces. But if choosing your wedding venue is such an important part of planning your big day, how do you know you’ve picked the right place? Here are some things to consider before taking the plunge.

STRIKE A BALANCE

Before you even start looking at venues, sit down with your partner and discuss your expectations for your wedding. Make sure both of you are secure in what you want, not only from a venue but from the whole day, including a list of ‘musthaves’. The venue you pick should reflect both of your tastes and fit with the overall style of your wedding. Remember to be open minded! Maybe the ballroom can’t accommodate your needs, but a riverside cabin can.

STICK TO YOUR BUDGET

Work out with your partner what you want to spend early on. This will help you know how much you want to spend on your venue and therefore what to look for and where to start. However, try and stick to your budget. This will free up more money for other aspects of your wedding, like the dress, flowers, or catering.

LOOK FOR LOCATION

Decide on a venue that is in a convenient location for both you and your guests. By choosing a considerate location, this will ensure that as many guests as possible will be able to come and celebrate with you on your big day. It may also be beneficial for you to consider travel connections and cost as this may affect who can attend as well as the location’s convenience for you. For example, if you want a wedding abroad, what are the laws in that country surrounding marriage?

SPACE IT OUT

One of the final things to think about when choosing a wedding

and do either you or your partner have a large family? Or, perhaps you want a smaller, more intimate wedding reception. Whatever you have your heart set on, it’s important to consider the size of the venue you choose and whether it fits appropriately with your other wedding plans. If you only plan on inviting forty people, then maybe a choosing a castle is overkill. But, if you have a large guest list and a 15-piece brass band, then space is imperative, and you don’t want the dancefloor to feel too cramped.

Destinations

As Europe and North America slip into the cool embrace of autumn, Marrakesh comes alive in a gentler way.

October is the city’s sweet spot—the heat of summer has softened, the winter crowds have yet to descend, and the ochre-hued medina hums at a slower, more intoxicating pace.

Wandering through the labyrinth of souks feels like stepping into a painter’s palette—pyramids of saffron, handwoven carpets, lanterns casting filigreed shadows. The Djemaa el-Fna square, chaotic and mesmerizing in the summer months, now feels more accessible. Storytellers, snake charmers, and musicians still weave their magic, but the cooler evenings invite you to linger longer, savoring grilled lamb skewers, steaming bowls of harira soup, or freshly squeezed orange juice under the glow of lanterns.

October is the perfect time to explore the city’s cultural gems. The Bahia Palace dazzles with intricate tilework and serene courtyards, while the Saadian Tombs, hidden for centuries, reveal a golden legacy of dynastic grandeur. At the Dar Si Said Museum, you can lose yourself in centuries of Moroccan craftsmanship, from carved cedar doors to delicate jewelry. And for a quiet moment, the cobalt walls and lush greenery of the Jardin Majorelle— once the retreat of Yves Saint Laurent— offer tranquility in the heart of the city. Marrakesh is also a city to taste as much as to see. Step inside Le Jardin, tucked

away in a leafy courtyard, for modern twists on Moroccan classics. For rooftop dining with views over the medina, Nomad serves vibrant dishes that balance local tradition with international flair. If you crave pure authenticity, the bustling food stalls of Djemaa el-Fna deliver smoky brochettes, snail soup, and melt-in-your-mouth msemen flatbreads. And for a fine-dining finale, Dar Yacout offers an opulent feast in a lantern-lit riad that feels like a step back in time.

Beyond the city walls, the season beckons adventurers outward. A day trip to the Ourika Valley in the High Atlas Mountains brings crisp air, tumbling waterfalls, and terraced Berber villages. For something more otherworldly, the Agafay Desert, with its rolling stone dunes, offers sunset camel rides and starlit dinners without the long journey to the Sahara.

Back in the city, evenings belong to the rooftops. From chic riads overlooking the medina to trendy lounges in Gueliz, Marrakesh’s modern quarter, you’ll find the perfect spot to sip mint tea—or perhaps a pomegranate cocktail—as the call to prayer ripples across the skyline.

There’s a romance to October here: warm enough for linen, cool enough for comfort, infused with the thrill of discovery.

This autumn, trade falling leaves for terracotta walls, spice-laden breezes, and a city that doesn’t just welcome you—it envelopes you.

October Escapes

of European travel shifting. Once dominated by the height of summer, the most desirable months are now found in the golden weeks of autumn.

October is emerging as the new August – when Mediterranean waters still hold summer’s warmth, the sun casts a softer glow over cobblestone streets, and hotels embrace guests with a quieter, more indulgent welcome.

Beyond offering perfect temperatures for both city exploration and coastal relaxation, autumn travel also means fewer crowds, richer cultural programming, and a heightened sense of place. From Portugal’s vibrant harbours to the rolling hills of Tuscany and the sunlit Andalusian coast, here’s where to go this season.

Finca Cortesin – Andalusia for the active traveller

Cortesin feels especially magical in October. Mild days make the resort ideal for golf, padel, and outdoor exploration. Guests can play its championship course, cycle through olive groves, or visit nearby pueblos blancos before unwinding at the hotel’s Beach Club. Evenings bring cool breezes and El Jardín de Lutz’s Mediterranean menu on the terrace – the perfect reward after an active day.

Anassa – Cyprus by the sea

For family-friendly late-season sun, Anassa is Cyprus at its finest. October seas remain warm for sailing, diving, and paddleboarding, while coastal trails invite relaxed exploration. The resort’s beachfront setting, thalassotherapy spa, and Mediterranean cuisine paired with baby-go-lightly services make it a haven for last-minute escapes before winter sets in.

The Largo Porto – An autumn in Portugal’s city of wine

In Porto, autumn brings the Douro

away in the historic quarter of Largo de São Domingos, The Largo is the ideal base for vineyard visits, riverside strolls, and evenings of seasonal Portuguese gastronomy by Chef Nuno Mendes. With fewer crowds, crisp blue skies, and golden sunsets over the Dom Luís I Bridge, the city feels more intimate than ever.

Borgo Santo Pietro –Tuscany during harvest time

October turns Borgo Santo Pietro’s 300-acre estate into a living postcard, with grape harvests, olive picking, and truffle hunts in full swing. Guests can join cooking classes or savour estate-grown produce at the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant Saporium. Cooler days make exploring Siena and Florence a pleasure, while evenings by the fire bring true Tuscan comfort.

This October, Europe offers the best of both worlds – the warmth and vibrancy of summer, paired with the ease and richness of autumn. For those in the know, it’s the season when travel feels more personal and the best.

How Nature Improves Your Health

Researchers at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) are investigating how indoor plants may improve the health and wellbeing of office workers.

A team of biophilia experts have developed a ‘green’ office with more than 20 plants and a green wall in order to monitor whether, and in what ways, people working among greenery develop improved health.

Participants will have their heart rate and blood pressure monitored while working in the green office, and this will be compared to their measurements while working in a separate office space which features no plants.

The project is led by Professor Emeritus Derek Clements-Croome, who is also a visiting professor at NTU from University of Reading, with Dr Yangang Xing, an associate professor at NTU, and Dr Tatsuya Matsuoka, a visiting scholar at NTU from Shimizu, Japan.

Dr Matsuoka said: “While it’s commonly believed that being surrounded by nature is good for your health and wellbeing, we’re keen to design a methodology which can prove whether or not this is the case in an office environment.

“When you consider how many people work in offices around the world –whether onsite or from a home office – the implications for people’s wellbeing could be considerable.

“And with increasing interest in healthier work environments, our findings could help shape how offices of the future are designed and maintained for long-term health benefits.”

The study is taking place until December this year and will result in published research which will be open for the public

to read free of charge.

The chosen plants are selected based on related research carried out by the North American Space Agency (NASA) for their air-filtering abilities, primarily for their capacity to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

They include tall plants such as the kentia palm, barrier plants like the sansevieria, as well as snake plants, monsteras, the Dracaena Janet Craig and more.

A series of short tests of 30 minutes per participant will take place this summer before 24 hour tests will take place later in the year for a more detailed analysis. Participants will wear Google Fitbit 6s to monitor their blood pressure and heart rate and be asked a series of questions about their experience of working in both environments.

Their wellbeing outside of the office, including quality of sleep, will also be monitored as part of the later study.

“We hope that this study will pave the way for further international collaborative research into optimising inclusive biophilic design and will inform better designed work places to support human health, well-being, and contribute to one-planet health over time.”

Threads of Legacy

A City Woven in Threads

Nottingham’s story is stitched into history with lace, textiles, and craftsmanship. For generations, the city’s Lace Market was the heartbeat of creativity, a place where skilled hands turned delicate threads into works of art admired across the world. These threads carried Nottingham’s name far beyond its borders, weaving a legacy that shaped both industry and culture. But as time passed, much of that heritage slipped quietly into the background. The women who worked tirelessly in lace factories, the artisans who sustained Nottingham’s reputation, were often forgotten. Their contributions — their legacy — risk being lost.

At Red Carpet 5: Threads of Legacy, we are bringing that history back to life.

Threads of Legacy: Where Heritage Meets Today

This unique red-carpet event, hosted by Skilled Hands, is more than a fashion show. It is a celebration, an intertwining of Nottingham’s proud lace-making tradition with today’s vibrant creativity.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the runway becomes a living canvas. Each design is not just a garment but a story — a thread that connects the artistry of Nottingham’s past with the empowerment of women today.

Fashion meets heritage. Creativity meets history. And every ticket holder becomes part of the story.

Why Threads of Legacy Matters

A Tribute to Nottingham’s Lace Market: Once the global centre of lace making, Nottingham’s Lace Market embodied innovation, craftsmanship, and artistry. Our event honours this history and reminds us of its cultural importance.

Women’s Stories Rewoven: Lace makers were mostly women, working with skill and precision but often overlooked. This red carpet is their long-overdue spotlight, while also celebrating the women of today who are weaving new opportunities through craft.

Empowerment Through Creativity: Skilled Hands has trained and empowered hundreds of women in Nottingham, reviving artisan crafts such as dressmaking, bag making, jewellery design, soap making, and millinery. Threads of Legacy shines a light on this ongoing work, showing that heritage is not just to be remembered — it is to be lived and carried forward.

Be Part of the Legacy

This event is not just for Nottingham. It is for anyone who treasures heritage, fashion, creativity, and empowerment. Whether you are in Nottingham or its surrounding cities, this is your invitation to step into a story that belongs to us all.

• Your ticket is more than entry to a show ... it is your thread in Nottingham’s legacy

Do you know your numbers?

In the UK, around one in three people have High blood pressure, and nearly six million people are unaware they have it. Lauren Hewitt, Registered Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, shares how to understand your blood pressure readings and what they mean for your heart health.

What is blood pressure?

Every time your heart beats, which happens 60 to 100 times a minute, it pumps blood into your arteries. Blood pressure is the pressure of blood on the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood around your body. Your blood pressure changes to meet your body’s needs and doesn’t stay the same all the time.

Blood pressure is often measured using an electronic blood pressure machine and cuff; however, some people prefer to measure it manually using a cuff and stethoscope. Both ways are accurate and will give you a reading in the form of systolic blood pressure / diastolic blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mm/Hg).

How can you check your blood pressure readings?

Systolic blood pressure is the first or top number that you will see on your blood pressure monitor and the higher of the two. This is the maximum reading recorded when your heart contracts and pushes blood into the artery walls.

Diastolic blood pressure is the second or bottom reading on your monitor. This is the minimum recorded reading when your heart relaxes before the next contraction. During this relaxation phase, your heart refills with blood and oxygen.

Lauren Hewitt, Registered Associate Nutritionist at Heart Research UK, explains: “You should aim for your blood pressure readings to be within a healthy range throughout the day, especially at rest.

“A healthy blood pressure range is 90 / 60 mmHg to 120 / 80 mmHg. A reading below the healthy range is classed as having low blood pressure, and a higher reading of 121-140 / 81-90 mm/Hg is within a raised range. Ifyour blood pressure is above this, then you have high blood pressure and need to visit your GP. High readings range from 141-160 / 91-100 mm/Hg and mean that you should see your GP within two weeks. Very high readings are anything above 160 / 100 mm/Hg and indicate that you should visit your GP within two days.”

What are the risks of having high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, often doesn’t have any symptoms, which means that you wouldn’t

know if you had it unless you got your blood pressure checked. This explains why it is often called the ‘silent killer.’

“Every day in the UK, 350 people have a stroke or heart attack that could have been prevented,” says Lauren. “Uncontrolled and untreated high blood pressure damages the walls of your blood vessels, which results in plaque build-up and can lead to coronary heart disease and strokes.

“Having hypertension untreated for a long time can result in your heart becoming damaged due to it needing to work overtime. This can result in heart failure and be fatal. It can also increase your risk of other conditions, such as kidney disease and vascular dementia.”

How can you reduce your blood pressure?

Several different factors affect your blood pressure, including physical activity, diet and genetics. Following a healthy or unhealthy lifestyle can change your blood pressure readings.

Lauren says: “Physical activity and exercise are one of the best ways to strengthen your heart and reduce your blood pressure. Being active helps to keep your heart and blood vessels in the best shape possible, just like exercise benefits the rest of your muscles. You should aim to carry out at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, as well as two strength training sessions to keep your heart strong and working efficiently.

Dietary factors such as consuming high amounts of salt and sugar also increase your blood pressure and can influence weight gain. Eating too much salt increases the amount of sodium in your

body, which can cause fluid retention. This means that water is pulled back into your bloodstream and increases the amount of water in your blood vessels, increasing your blood pressure.

Eating too much sugar can also contribute to high blood pressure. High blood sugar levels can lead to atherosclerosis, a buildup of fatty material in your blood vessels. Sugar can also cause weight gain due to its high number of calories and lack of nutritional value, which also increases blood pressure. An easy way to reduce your blood pressure readings is to reduce your consumption of these and opt for low salt and sugar versions of foods, making sure you’re reading the food labels on packaging. Consuming too much alcohol and smoking can increase your blood pressure too, so reducing these and stopping where possible will help your heart massively.”

Inheritance & Divorce: Is Your Legacy Protected?

Partners and Solicitors at Nelsons, Emma Davies and Amanda Voakes, share their expertise and explain how inheritance can be affected during the complex process of dividing finances when a marriage ends.

The starting point

Inheritance can be a deeply personal and often contentious issue in divorce proceedings. Many people assume that inherited assets are automatically protected from division, but the reality is more nuanced. In England and Wales, the courts assess inheritance on a case-by-case basis, considering factors such as timing, financial needs, and whether the inheritance has been mingled with marital assets.

Is Inheritance Automatically Protected in Divorce?

Not always. While inheritance is generally considered a non-matrimonial asset, it can be included in a financial settlement if needed to meet the other spouse’s financial requirements.

Key Factors Courts Consider

Timing of the Inheritance

Inheritance received before or after the marriage is more capable of protection. Inheritance received during the marriage, especially if mingled with other matrimonial property, may be treated as shared.

How the Inheritance was used

If the funds were kept separate - for example, in a personal account or trust - they are easier to ring-fence. If used to purchase a matrimonial home or mingled with other assets, they may be considered part of the marital pot.

However, the financial needs of both parties and any children are the most influential factor. If one spouse cannot meet their needs without using the inheritance, the court may include it in the settlement to achieve fairness.

Expert Insight

Emma comments:

“In Family Law we often see clients surprised to learn that inheritance isn’t automatically off-limits in divorce. The best protection is proactive planning, whether through trusts in estate planning when considering preserving family wealth for future generations, nuptial agreements, or ensuring inherited assets are kept separate. These steps can make all the difference in preserving a family legacy.

The importance of nuptial agreements and ensuring that you have holistic professional advice in estate planning and when receiving inheritance should not be ignored as this could be the difference between the court finding that assets are matrimonial and should be shared or non-matrimonial which would

see them ring-fenced or only invaded to meet the parties needs if required.”

Amanda, adds:

“Estate planning isn’t just about creating a Will, it’s about safeguarding family wealth through life’s changes.

As circumstances evolve, marriage, divorce, births, or financial shifts, it’s crucial to review and adjust estate plans to ensure assets are distributed as intended, tax-efficiently, and without unnecessary disputes. A wellstructured plan provides stability for future generations and prevents costly legal battles.”

You can look to protect your inheritance in a number of ways:

Use a Trust

A discretionary trust can help control how assets are distributed and protect them from future claims. This can help prove that the inheritance should be considered nonmatrimonial.

However, it is important to know that the court will take trusts into account on divorce. The way they are treated by the court will depend on when they were created and how they have been managed during the course of the marriage.

Keep Inheritance Separate

Avoid mixing inherited funds with joint accounts or using them for shared purchases where possible.

Consider a Pre-nuptial or Post-nuptial Agreement

These agreements can clarify how inherited assets will be treated in the event of divorce.

Seek Legal Advice Early

A solicitor can help structure your inheritance and estate plan to minimise risk and maximise protection. It is also important to seek legal advice early when considering pre-nuptial agreements.

Final Thoughts

Inheritance is not automatically protected in divorce but with the right planning it can be. Our team works collaboratively across family and private client law to help clients protect, preserve, and pass on wealth securely. From estate planning and inheritance structuring to safeguarding assets during divorce, we’re here to support you through life’s legal complexities.

Bewitching Doorway

Dobbies’ Stylist, Rebecca Stanton, outlines how you can recreate the garden centre’s eerie Halloween doorscape on a budget using fang-tastic décor and a touch of DIY magic for a bewitching display that’s full of charm and chills

Rebecca says: “This year, it’s all about layering textures and lighting. Start by framing your doorway with glowing decorations or string lights draped overhead to add a dramatic effect after dark. Twinkling pumpkins hanging from above add height and interest and a light-up broomstick perched against your doorway will give your entrance a unique touch.

“To really make your Halloween décor come alive, mix different light up elements to create an all-round eerie glow. Scatter light-up pumpkins, novelty figures and LED lanterns across steps and window ledges to lead trick-ortreaters to your door, and don’t be afraid to combine warm, cool, and colourful lights. Unlike Christmas when it’s recommended to stick to a colour scheme with lighting, it’s fun to mix it up at Halloween because the more eclectic the glow, the more enchanting the effect.

“You can add a touch of warmth to your display by playing into some of the more natural autumn textures and tones. Crates stacked with pumpkins

and seasonal foliage will bring layers of autumnal character to your doorway while adding height. Mixing in these natural elements with traditional Halloween props like skeleton hands will give your doorway a rich, styled look while bringing the fright factor.

“To really personalise your doorway, keep an eye out for pieces that add a unique touch. Dobbies’ LED decorations and novelty lights offer fun and costeffective ways to decorate with minimal fuss,

and you can play around with their styling to really make your doorway your own. And, if you only buy one thing this year to make an impact, consider a spooky door knocker – these really make an impression and help set a frightfully fun tone. It’s the little touches that bring your décor to life so have fun creating a display you love.”

Making More Room

Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.

Assess Feasibility

Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.

Plan Your Space

Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.

Structural Considerations

Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.

Lighting and Ventilation

Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Access

Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.

Utilities

Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.

Finishing Touches

Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.

Budget

Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

Professional Help

Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.

By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

Halloween lighting sets the perfect eerie mood. Whether you’re aiming for creepy, fun, or whimsical, creative lighting is the key to making Halloween unforgettable.

bathroom storage

Bathroom specialists Roper

Rhodes are helping homeowners clear away the clutter in a bid to transform busy bathrooms into stylish retreats. And according to the premium bathroom brand, the toilet – or rather the space around it – is key!

Zoe Jones, Interior Designer for Roper Rhodes, said: “Every bathroom, ensuite, cloakroom and wet room has a toilet, which means every bathroom, ensuite, cloakroom and wet room can fit in some additional storage. Homeowners who keep the space around the toilet empty are missing out on lots of potential storage space, that can transform the look and feel of the entire bathroom.”

Here Zoe shares her top four tips on making the space around the toilet count:

OVER TOILET STORAGE CABINETS

Over toilet storage is an effortless way to add extra storage without sacrificing precious floorspace. These slim-profile units fit neatly above the toilet with enough space for spare towels, additional toiletries and cleaning essentials in what would otherwise be an unused part of the bathroom.

“Whether wall-mounted or part of a tall fitted furniture run, it’s a smart solution that keeps clutter out of sight and everything in its place.”

TOILET STORAGE CUPBOARDS

It's vital to consider all potential storage space in small bathrooms, and that includes the space around the toilet. Combining a toilet unit with a floorstanding cupboard or fitted tall unit creates a cohesive, furniture-led look while

dramatically increasing your storage potential.

"It is really important to look at every potential option for storage in the tightest of spaces. There is so much wasted space around the toilet it makes perfect sense to consider adding fitted furniture."

FITTED FURNITURE

Fitted bathroom furniture is a great option for making the most of every inch, and fitted furniture runs can be configured to include over the toilet storage, open shelving, tall drawer storage and more.

"Fitted bathrooms are the ultimate solution to bathroom storage woes, allowing you to make the most of your space while keeping everything neatly in place."

COUNTERTOP SPACE

Worktop space is always in demand in small bathrooms, so why not create more of it? A back-to-wall toilet unit with a fitted worktop not only conceals unsightly pipework and the cistern but also adds a convenient surface for everyday essentials.

“Style with a candle, hand lotion or reed diffuser to create a calm and curated look. For even more storage, pair with a countertop tray to neatly group smaller items together."

Autumn Gardening

As summer begins to wind down, it’s easy to assume that the best of garden life is behind us for the year. But according to Dobbies’ Plant Buyer, Nigel Lawton, autumn is one of the most exciting and important times in the gardening calendar.

Nigel explains: “There’s a real energy to early autumn gardening, it’s all about keeping that summer magic going just a little longer, while also getting your garden ready for the colder months. And late autumn is the time to think about structure, protection, and preparing your space for the best possible start next spring.”

Whether you're planting for instant colour, looking to grow your own produce, or keen to protect wildlife in the months ahead, Dobbies has everything you need to get the most out of your garden this season.

The two stages of autumn gardening

Autumn gardening falls naturally into two phases: early autumn, where the focus is on extending summer colour, and late autumn, when it’s time to protect and prepare.

Nigel says, “In early autumn, we’re still focused on maintenance jobs like deadheading and feeding, things that will keep beds and containers looking their best through September. It’s also a great time to refresh summer bedding

displays with pansies, violas and wallflowers that will carry you through to spring.”

By late autumn, gardeners should turn their attention to winter readiness. “This is when winter pruning begins, especially to reduce wind rock on larger shrubs. It’s also time to bring tender plants like citrus, fuchsias and geraniums indoors and start thinking about weatherproofing your garden space.”

Instant autumn colour

Looking to brighten your garden this autumn? Nigel recommends adding bold bedding plants such as chrysanthemums, which offer stunning colour in early autumn and are a Dobbies seasonal highlight. “Pansies and violas are classic choices that continue to perform in cooler conditions,” says Nigel. “And later in the season, mini cyclamen come into their own and are perfect for containers and hanging baskets.”

Nigel’s top tip is to; “Raise pots off the ground to improve drainage and reduce the risk of waterlogging as the weather turns wetter.”

Time to plant for spring

Autumn is also the perfect planting season to get ahead for spring. Whether you're planning borders bursting with tulips or naturalising daffodils in the lawn, this is the time to start. Claire Bishop, Senior Houseplant and Bulbs Buyer at

Dobbies, says: “To create a stunning display in your garden in the spring, you need to plan early and autumn is the ideal time to do this. We’ve just launched our full spring flowering bulb range in stores, with great value multibuy offers like 3 packs for £12 and 2 for £12 on larger value packs.

Look out for our Bulb of the Month, crocus in August, and daffodils in September, including varieties perfect for naturalising in grass or creating five months of spring blooms, from January to May.”

Nigel adds that shrubs also deserve attention this season: “Autumn is ideal for planting evergreen shrubs like skimmia, leuciothoe and sacred bamboo. These provide structure and interest throughout the colder months.” Dobbies also has an extensive range of heathers, including vibrant calluna varieties, perfect for borders and containers alike.

Senior experts at Dobbies Garden Centres share their top tips for autumn gardening success

Grow your own autumn edition

While many grow your own crops are

time to plant soft fruits like raspberries and currants, and even fruit trees. Getting them in the ground now, while it’s still warm, helps roots establish before winter.”

Gardeners should also be harvesting crops like potatoes, storing any leftovers in breathable paper bags for winter use. And as the first frosts arrive, some vegetables, brussels sprouts, turnips, leeks, cabbage will become sweeter and more flavourful. “If you’ve grown pumpkins, make sure they’re harvested before Halloween,” Nigel adds.

Autumn lawncare

After a dry summer, your lawn needs some attention, and autumn is the perfect time to focus on root health. Nigel advises: “Autumn lawn feed is higher in potassium and phosphates which encourages strong root growth. This sets your lawn up to survive the cold and bounce back come spring.”

Other helpful tips include scarifying to remove dead grass and moss, aerating to improve water movement, and applying autumn lawn dressing to replenish the soil.

Greenhouse prep

As the growing season ends, greenhouses deserve a seasonal reset. “Clean out spent crops like tomatoes and give everything a good tidy,” says Nigel. “Move in any tender plants, and make sure your greenhouse heater is ready to go. Whether you're using an electric or paraffin model, it’s better to be prepared than caught out by a sudden cold snap.”

Garden wildlife

Autumn gardening isn’t just about plants, it’s also about wildlife. “There’s a balance between tidying up your garden and leaving habitats for insects and small animals,” Nigel explains. “Don’t be too quick to cut back everything, many perennials offer seeds for birds, and shrubs with berries, like Pyracantha or crab apple trees, are fantastic for wildlife.”

Smart water use

As we head into the wetter months, it’s the perfect time to think about rainwater harvesting and protecting irrigation systems. Nigel says: “Drain down your irrigation to prevent frost damage and start collecting rainwater now, your plants (and water bill) will thank you come spring.”

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

Care in thr Community

World Mental Health Day 2025

With World Mental Health Day just around the corner on 10 October, this year’s theme “Access to services – Mental health in catastrophes and emergencies” is a timely reminder of the urgent need to ensure people can receive support during crises. Whether it’s a natural disaster, a pandemic, or conflict, such events can have profound and lasting effects on mental health. In these situations, rates of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and other stress-related conditions rise sharply. Evidence shows that timely psychological support can reduce long-term impacts and help people regain stability, yet access to care is often limited precisely when it is most needed.

At Purple House Clinic Nottingham, we are committed to ensuring people can access the right support at the right time. Our team, led by Clinical Director Dr Elizabeth Lee, offers evidence-based therapies including

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). We also provide specialist neurodiversity assessments, including evaluations for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This allows us to tailor care to individual needs, ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind during times of crisis.

Access to services is not only a clinical challenge but also a systemic one. Emergencies can disrupt services, stretch resources, and exacerbate inequalities. To address this, Purple House Clinic works with organisations and community groups to provide training, workshops, and consultation. These initiatives help teams and communities better understand mental health challenges, respond effectively, and support recovery.

Research consistently highlights that early intervention and accessible, continuous care are key to mitigating the psychological impact of crises. By focusing on training and access, we can help individuals and communities navigate emergencies more effectively, build resilience, and reduce long-term distress.

On this World Mental Health Day, we encourage everyone - policymakers, healthcare providers, and community leaders - to prioritise mental health in times of crisis.

At Purple House Clinic Nottingham, we remain committed to advancing clinical care, expanding access to support, and helping people face challenges with resilience and dignity.

Join a Memory Walk

The annual charity event is a highlight in Ruth’s calendar, having first taken part in Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk 15 years ago. Each year she’s just as keen to get involved again. Supporting a cause close to her heart is important to Ruth, having witnessed her dad and now her mum living with dementia.

Ruth said: “By coming together and taking part in a Memory Walk, we can pave the way to dementia no longer devastating lives by helping to fund Alzheimer’s Society’s vital support services today and groundbreaking research for the future.

“It is so difficult to watch someone you love fade away little by little, but I’ve also seen the incredible difference support and care can make, not just to the person with dementia but their families.”

There are around one million people living with dementia in the UK today, 75,000 of those are in the East Midlands. Ruth urges people across the region to sign up to a Memory Walk near them or join her and walk together in Potters Fields Park, London, on 5 October 2025.

There are two walks happening in the East Midlands. On 28 September is the Clumber Park Memory Walk, followed by the Nottingham Memory Walk on 11 October at Wollaton Park. Both walks for free to register and start at 11am. Each walk will have two routes - a shorter one and a longer one - to make sure that everyone can get involved.

Here Ruth shares her five Memory Walks highlights and what others signing up can expect:

• There’s a huge sense of togetherness, everyone is walking for a purpose, whether it’s for those you love, those you’ve lost or for everyone living with dementia – the UK’s biggest killer. I’ll be walking for my mum Joan who is living with Alzheimer’s disease and in memory of my dad Dennis. You feel part of something that’s helping to make a difference.

• Money raised helps to fund Alzheimer’s Society’s vital dementia support and research. Last year, the charity’s Dementia Support Line answered nearly 60,000 calls from those in need.

TV presenter and Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador

Ruth Langsford is inviting people across the East Midlands to join her by signing up to one of the charity’s 12 Memory Walks this Autumn

• It’s a way to pause and reflect, embracing the moment to add a message to the Memory Tree or share stories with friends, family and strangers who understand.

• It’s great exercise and motivation to keep active in the lead up and afterwards. There are two routes on each walk, a short one or longer version, between 2km –10km. There’s evidence to suggest that physical activity improves confidence and the wellbeing of people with dementia and may slow down mental decline.

walking together to help fund vital dementia support and groundbreaking research. This Autumn, there are 12 walks across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including one at Wollaton Park in Nottingham on 11 October 2025.

Individuals or groups can also organise their own Memory Walk when and where suits them.

• The feeling of accomplishment. Knowing with every step and pound raised, you can help to end the devastation caused by dementia. And let’s face it, who doesn’t like to be awarded with a medal at the end!

This year there are 12 Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walks happening across the UK between September and October or people can organise their own walk this Autumn. Sign up for free at a walk near you, visit memorywalk.org.uk

Hollygate Memorial woodlands

A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services.

Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.

We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.

We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.

We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and

spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.

There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.

There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family

plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.

Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

Dementia Support

A recent survey published by Alzheimer’s Society found that 70% of unpaid carers say they have experienced a negative impact due to caring for someone with dementia, with 37% reporting a negative impact on their mental health and almost half reporting they feel socially isolated and have less time to do the things they enjoy, highlighting the challenges faced by those caring for people with dementia.

Hollie Wynde, Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Helpline Adviser, shares her guidance for families caring for a loved one with dementia. With one in three people born today likely to develop dementia in their lifetime, dementia impacts not just individuals but entire families and communities. Currently, one million people are living with dementia in the UK, projected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040.

Despite the prevalence of dementia, one in three people living with dementia do not have a diagnosis. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for assessing treatment and support that can help manage symptoms and prevent a crisis.

A recent study found that fewer than half of those affected by dementia are satisfied with the support available to them currently, yet over half believe increased support and professional carers who are skilled in caring for those with dementia would best help to improve the lives of those living with the condition.

Top tips for caring for someone with dementia

Hollie Wynde, Dementia Helpline Adviser, said: “Caring for someone with dementia presents unique challenges that can feel overwhelming. We receive thousands of calls to our dementia helpline every month, and we know the period before, during, and after diagnosis is particularly difficult for families. Here are my top tips for supporting a loved one with dementia:

Reassure them that they’re still them

Dementia can affect how a person sees themselves. It can knock their confidence and make them question who they are and what their role is within their family or community. Let them know you still think of them as the person they’ve always been, rather than defining them by their dementia. Focus on what they can do and how they can still contribute.

Try to understand changes in behaviour

Dementia can cause changes in mood and behaviour. Some of these are

relatively benign, such as becoming more reliant on a daily routine or wanting to eat different things. However, others can cause distress. People with dementia may become agitated, frustrated or fearful. They can think things that aren’t true or see things that aren’t there. If this happens, stay calm and try to consider what they’re thinking or feeling in that moment. Try to work out why they’re upset and provide as much reassurance as you can. Use gentle persuasion where you can but try not to argue, as this rarely helps. Sometimes it can help to provide a distraction or change the topic of conversation.

Keep up relationships with family and community

It’s important to try to keep existing relationships going as otherwise it can lead to increasing isolation, both for the person with dementia and those who support them. Join social groups, community activities, or visit dementia cafés where you can connect with others facing similar challenges.

Adapt your communication style

People with dementia may struggle to find the right words or follow the thread of conversations. They may have difficult hearing you in places with lots of background noise. Give them more time to think things through and work out what they want to say. Be patient and use short, simple sentences. Sometimes it can help to speak a little more slowly than usual, but not too much as this can actually make you

harder to understand. Maintain eye contact and use non-verbal communication, such as smiles and physical gestures – just as you would do for anyone else, but perhaps a little more deliberately. And never use infantilising or patronising language that treats them as anything less than an adult.

Prioritise your own wellbeing

It can be tough to suddenly find yourself in a caring or supporting role. It can feel very daunting. It’s important to use whatever support you can find to help you get through it, whether this be friends and family, local dementia support groups, or health and social care professionals. Don’t feel that you need to do everything by yourself. Everyone needs regular breaks to recharge their batteries and continue to do the things they love.

Support around the clock

No one can and should beat dementia alone, it will take a society. If you need support, please call our support line.” If you’re worried about dementia, Alzheimer’s Society is here to help.

LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE

The

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Charity is gearing up to save more lives than ever with the addition of a second helicopter.

The charity, which saves lives across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire has secured a spot on the production line in Italy for a new helicopter at a cost of around £7m. LNAA currently operates with one helicopter, its iconic yellow AW169. But as mission numbers rise, the doctors, paramedics and pilots who respond to an average of four missions a day, know that there are patients they can’t currently get to.

Medical Director Dr Gareth Davies said: “We want to bring our skill and experience to the side of more patients, more quickly, and across a wider area. A second aircraft is a game-changer for these patients and for us as we expand what we can do to meet the needs of the communities that we serve.”

The charity is completely funded by donations and the project has taken flight thanks to initial fundraising efforts which have raised £4m.

The Michael Cornish Charitable Trust and BNA Charitable Incorporated Organisation have each given £1m towards the second helicopter. The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust and Nottingham based company Experian have also made generous contributions to the project, along with LNAA contributing thanks to its fundraising efforts.

Michael Cornish said: “Our charitable trust has existed to help charities who have a

tangible, positive impact on communities, including saving lives. LNAA does this 365 days of the year, across a vast area, so it fits entirely with our vision. We are excited to be part of something that will unquestionably help to save lives.”

A spokesperson for BNA said: “BNA have been a major contributor over the years and are pleased to have generously donated to this important strengthening of LNAA’s cover of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.”

A spokesperson for The Jones 1986 Charitable Trust said: “The Trust has been a major supporter of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance over the years because we know how important the charity is in being able to deliver life-saving care on the scene. We're pleased that we have been able to make a sizeable donation to help ensure that LNAA can get to more patients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire”.

The plan for a second helicopter emerged after data gathered by the charity showed there are people in need who the service cannot get to with just one aircraft. In the last five years, the charity has seen a 135 percent increase in mission numbers and recent data has shown that there’s an average of 1.4 missions every day the crews are not able to currently respond to. The second helicopter will be an AW109 Grand New model and is scheduled to land at the charity in summer 2027 with a view to being fully operational by autumn that year.

LNAA’s CEO Karen Jobling said: “We are absolutely delighted to share this incredible news with our supporters. The addition of a second helicopter means that we will be able to attend more emergencies, more quickly, and provide critical care to more patients who might not otherwise have access in time. This is truly a life-changing development for the communities we are here to serve.

“Every life we save is a thanks to the people who support LNAA. The second helicopter will belong to everyone who has ever donated, fundraised, or supported us in any way. It will save many more lives, and we could not achieve this without them.”
