DEAR READER
Our first thoughts tend to swing towards a bit of DIY, followed by a relaxing barbeque in the garden. But what if you did something different this year, and had your very own mini staycation?
I know I always harp on about how beautiful North Wales is, and how lucky we are to live in such a unique region, but have you ever looked at the area through the eyes of a tourist? And have you ever taken a few days out in a row to explore some unchartered territory and really get to know North Wales?
A great place to start is the Isle of Anglesey. We focus on the east of the island this month, on pages 15 and 16, and you can really see just how much there is to do on Ynys Môn. From historic castles to educational boat tours, beautiful beaches to quaint high streets,
Anglesey has it all. Not to mention a plethora of cafés and restaurants for you to recharge your batteries once you’ve got your steps in exploring!
Of course, one of the bank holiday weekends might be put to best use by actually going away for a couple of nights. And the good thing about North Wales is that you don’t have to travel far to get a completely different change of scene. If you live by the coast, why not camp in the countryside? And if you live inland, why not bag yourself a seaside retreat? We have plenty of accommodation inspiration on pages 35 and 36, so turn the page and get planning your best May yet…

The critically acclaimed production calls in to Llandudno this month…
Stephen Daldry’s landmark National Theatre production of J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls arrives at Venue Cymru on 13th May as part of its critically acclaimed UK tour. First staged in 1992, this radical reimagining of Priestley’s classic thriller has since become a global phenomenon, seen by over five million theatregoers worldwide and winning more than 19 major awards, including Olivier and Tony Awards.
Daldry’s vision breathed new life into a play long associated with amateur dramatics. “It took some time researching Priestley and his motivations before I realised this was a much more radical piece than it had become known as,” he recalls. Originally written during WWII but set in 1912, the play explores class, responsibility, and the ripple effects of our actions – questions that remain chillingly relevant.
When Inspector Goole unexpectedly interrupts the wealthy Birling family’s dinner party with news of a young woman’s death, a web of secrets unravels, forcing each character –and the audience – to examine their conscience.
The 2024-25 cast is led by RSC and National Theatre regular Tim Treloar as Inspector Goole. He’s joined by Jackie Morrison (The Last Ship, Dirty Dancing) as Mrs Birling, Jeffrey Harmer returning as Mr Birling, Tom Chapman as Gerald Croft, Leona Allen as Sheila, George Rowlands reprising his role as Eric, and Alice Darling as Edna.
Since its premiere, Daldry’s production has remained largely unchanged – an unusual feat for a theatre piece touring for over three decades. “It’s a work from a younger version of myself,” he says. “I’m not sure now if I would have done quite
the same production or been as bold as I was in my twenties.” He believes the themes remain more vital than ever. “The welfare state is in crisis. Questions around how we care for one another – economically, socially, morally – are more acute today than they’ve ever been. This play still feels like a call to action.”
Described as a morality play, a ghost story, and even a "time play" referencing Priestley’s theories on multiple timelines and second chances, An Inspector Calls speaks to every generation differently – but powerfully. “JB Priestley had this theory, as I remember, that we have parallel lives in parallel time zones. So, your behaviour, and your attitudes can determine the life that you are living now in this world, and there are multiple universes. It sounds like The Matrix,” Daldry explains. n

East AngleseyDiscovering
Bethany Birch visits the eastern side of the Isle of Anglesey, and finds a coastal haven that is set to delight…
The Isle of Anglesey is known for its beauty, with its scenic coastline and impressive views it's near impossible not to win you over. The East side of this stunning island is home to some ever-popular towns and villages. Beaumaris, Menai Bridge, Red Wharf Bay and Moelfre are just a few of the gems along this coastline. From wildlife to coastal walks, and from scenic shores to historic castles, East Anglesey has plenty to offer year-round.
If you’re in search of natural beauty, then the East offers this in abundance. Long stretches of sandy beaches, breathtaking views across Menai Strait, rolling hills and rugged cliff sides create a canvas of wild wonderment. Slip on your walking boots and soak up the scenery and spring sunshine with a walk along the Menai Strait coastal path stretch, this ramble offers incredible views and is a great way to see the area by foot. Keep an eye out for local seals and birds!
For those wanting a longer adventure, the Anglesey Coastal Path extends further along the eastern coast, leading to more remote beaches and passing through the villages of Benllech and Moelfre. The golden sands of Benllech draw plenty of visitors year-round, especially throughout the summer months, and for good reason! The waters are calm and safe, and the long stretch of sand means plenty of space for picnic blankets, windbreakers and beach games. There’s also a lovely short walk along the beach or through the
woodland and into the village; why not stop at one of the local restaurants for dinner after a full-day in the waves?
Another gorgeous spot is the village of Moelfre, situated on the north-east side of the island. Offering another lovely beach, different to Benllechs in appeal and size, this beach is a charming pebble cove. The small, sheltered bay, slipway and shingles make it the perfect spot for launching boats, sailing, fishing and picnics. Interestingly, the name 'Moelfre' translates to 'bald or barren hill' in English, a reference to the hills that rise behind the village when viewed from the sea.
Nestled between the villages of Benllech and Pentraeth, Red Wharf Bay, also known as Traeth Coch, is a beautiful village and sandy bay. The wide beach provides plenty of room for beach days, be sure to take your nets to explore some of Traeth Coch's rock pools that are regularly being replenished due to the abnormal tides. The bay lies between the towns of Pentraeth and Benllech, so a walk between the two towns is even more special taking in the sights of Red Wharf Bay.
Just inland from Red Wharf Bay lies Pentraeth Forest, a hidden gem perfect for those who love woodland walks. This peaceful forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including red
With stunning views stretching from the Menai Strait to the Carneddau mountains and Snowdonia, the list wouldn't be complete without a mention of the popular town of Beaumaris
squirrels, one of Anglesey’s conservation success stories. With a network of walking trails weaving through the trees, it's an excellent place for a shaded stroll or a quiet escape from the coastal winds.
To the east, the village of Llanddona offers a peaceful beach and coastal views, making it a lovely spot for a more secluded day by the sea. Llanddona provides a great alternative to some of the busier, more tourist-heavy coastal towns. Just a 20-minute drive from Llanddona is Penmon Point. From here, you can see the famous Puffin Island (Ynys Seiriol), a small, uninhabited island that’s home to a variety of wildlife, including the puffins that visit in summer! The island is now a bird sanctuary and nesting site for seabirds, including puffins, razorbills and kittiwakes. Boat trips around the island provide an excellent chance to see these birds during the breeding season from April to July.
The area is also rich in history, with Penmon Priory and its ancient well adding a touch of heritage to the stunning surroundings. The picturesque coastline and the charming lighthouse (built in 1838) at Penmon Point make this an ideal spot for a walk or a scenic photography opportunity –it’s also a popular spot for fishermen and wildlife enthusiasts.
With stunning views stretching from the Menai Strait to the Carneddau mountains and Snowdonia, the list wouldn't be complete without a mention of the popular town of Beaumaris. Step back in history with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Beaumaris Castle – the last of Edward I's iron ring of castles along the North Wales coast. From castles
to cafés the town isn’t short on things to see and do, enjoy a drink or bite to eat in one of the local eateries before browsing the shops and taking in the views.
With its blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and coastal charm, East Anglesey offers something for everyone. Whether you’re drawn to its scenic walks, the fascinating wildlife, or the rich heritage, this corner of the island promises unforgettable experiences that cater to both outdoor adventurers and history buffs. n

Visit a castle
Beaumaris has been deemed as the most technically perfect castle in Britain. Featuring classic proportions and perfect symmetry, Beaumaris was built according to Edward I’s ingenious ‘walls within walls’ plan on the Isle of Anglesey. Work began in the summer of 1295, overseen by Master James of St George, but it was never officially finished due to lack of funds. Work finally came to a halt in 1330 – with the castle still not built to its intended height – by which time a whopping £15,000 had been spent. Today it makes for a fabulous day out, so go and visit before exploring Beaumaris itself…

It’s well known that spending time outdoors boosts both mental and physical wellbeing. With weekly themes to inspire you and plenty of ideas to get you started, it’s the perfect way to slow down and make your daily routine just that little bit more wild.
Why not make some time to watch sparrows squabble outside your window, pause to smell a flower on your walk to the shops, or spot a butterfly soaking up the sun? So take inspiration from the space that you have, whether it is large or small, and plan what you can do with it accordingly. Both the type of soil that you have and the orientation of your garden will dictate the finished look, so do your research on the type of plants that will thrive in your particular garden. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either – there are plenty of places to go for advice…

Legends of the
Mabinogion
Dene Bebbington steps back in time to discover the fascinating stories told by our ancestors…
Many centuries ago storytelling bards tramped around Wales passing on dramatic tales infused with myths and history in return for food and a roof over their head. Over time these word-of-mouth stories got embellished but were eventually written down in the Red Book of Hergest, otherwise they could have been lost to posterity. So what do they tell us about Celtic mythology?
Dating back to the late 11th Century, the Mabinogion consists of 11 stories written in Middle Welsh. Translated to English in the 1800s, by Lady Charlotte Guest, there are four branches complemented by a few other mythical Welsh stories. Today we'd consider them to be fantasy since they contain magic, giants and strange creatures. For people who didn't travel much beyond their settlement it must have been amazing to hear a bard recount wondrous adventures, yet they contain a lot of violence typical of those times.
It seems that the title Mabinogion is an incorrect word from Guest's translation because she wrongly assumed it's plural for mabinogi, a word appearing only once in the Welsh manuscripts and which may have been a scribe's mistake. However, one philologist thinks it may be material related to the god Maponos (great son) and we know that the Welsh word “mab” means a son or youth.
We should bear in mind, as Guest points out in her original introduction to the translation, that Welsh place names tend to refer to an event, whether real or legendary. This is one way that happenings in the Mabinogion have left a permanent mark on Wales. Llyn Morwynion (Lake of the Maidens) is where Blodeuedd's maidens are said to have drowned when fleeing from the wizard Gwydion. Blodeuedd survived because, rather than kill her, Gwydion turned
In The Dream of Maxen Wledig the Roman emperor dreams about a beautiful maiden adorned with gold and precious stones. Upon waking, the dream has such a profound influence upon him that he seeks advice and is recommended to send messengers around the world in a quest to find what he'd dreamed of. Thirteen set off and finally explore Britain. Crossing into Wales they reach Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and exclaim that they've discovered “the rugged land that our master saw”.
From here they head north-west to the island of Anglesey and remark that it's “the land our master saw in his sleep”. They then sight a castle
matching that in his dream and enquire of the lady within whether she'll marry the emperor, then his messengers return to Rome with her response. To win her over he returns with an army to conquer Britain.
Dreams that somehow see actual faraway places and people aren't the only fantastical aspect of the Mabinogion set amidst the adventures and plots of warriors, kings and emperors. Ceridwen lived by Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) with her husband Tegid Voel and son and daughter. Their son, Avagddu, unlike his beautiful sister Creirwy was ugly, leaving Ceridwen worried that he'd be rejected by men of noble birth such as King Arthur's knights of the round table. To bless him with the gift of seeing the future she boiled a cauldron of inspiration and science for a year and a day to produce three blessed drops. Thanks to this and other feats she performed in the story of Taliesin she's considered by some pagans to be a Celtic goddess of inspiration and rebirth.
Also mentioned in Taliesin is the long gone Deganwy Castle where King Maelgwn of Gwynedd hosted “all the number of his lords and of both degrees, both spiritual and temporal, and with a vast and thronged host of knights and squires”
at Christmastide for a discussion. A cauldron appears in an earlier part of the Mabinogion in the story Branwen the Daughter of Llyr. King Matholwch travels across the Irish Sea to Harlech to ask to marry Branwen, sister of the giant king Brân the Blessed (Bendigeidfran). He agrees, but his halfbrother Efnisien is affronted that his permission too was not sought and in cruel revenge mutilates Matholwch's horses.
The Irish king is appeased by Brân's offer of Pair Dadeni (the cauldron of rebirth) that possesses magical powers to bring the dead back to life. But there's a catch because the revenants can't hear or speak. In remembrance of this legend is a statue outside Harlech Castle depicting Bendigeidfran on his horse with the body of his nephew Gwern, killed when they went to war against Ireland.
Though the Mabinogion tales read as old-fashioned, those written words are as much a reminder of Wales' ancient past as the castles that feature in them.

Following their success at the Pan Celtic International Music Festival in Ireland in 2023 Cor Meibion Colwyn were eager to return to Ireland. An invitation came, this time to County Kerry which was hard to resist, so the choir travelled to Tralee where they were based for the weekend.
The Tralee Rotary Club hosted the choir, and organised a joint concert with the Kerry Choral Union in support of local charities. It was a joy for Cor Meibion Colwyn to sing at the modern St Brendan's Church which had amazing acoustics. The following day they travelled to Dingle where their hosts were the West Kerry Hospice. The choir performed a prestigious concert with renowned Irish soloist Eilish Kennedy, once again to a full capacity audience, at the most westerly catholic church in Europe. The event was streamed live to nine African countries – reaching a potential audience of 30,000 and marking a first for the choir.
Cor Meibion Colwyn’s musical leaders
Since 2020 Cor Meibion Colwyn’s young musical director Owain Gethin Davies has brought dynamism and innovation to the choir. His belief is that choral singing is a universal language that has the power to unite people.
Meanwhile, their accomplished accompanist Anne Levitt moved back to North Wales intent on retiring, however a chance meeting with a Colwyn chorister resulted in her becoming an essential member of the team.

Life on the edge
North Wales is home to not one, but two species of seal – and they need our protection. Gem Simmons explains more…
Grey seals are one of Wales’ most charismatic marine mammals, instantly recognisable by their large heads and roman nose, they are a firm favourite for wildlife enthusiasts and coastal walkers alike. But Wales is lucky enough to host two species of seal: The Atlantic Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus) and the less commonly sighted Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina). Both species can be seen frolicking across the Welsh coastline but, sadly, both are facing ever-increasing threats here and across the wider UK and global populations. The UK is home to over 40% of the global population of Grey seals and around 5% of the global Harbour seal population – meaning we have a duty to try and protect them from the threats they currently face.
Collectively, Seals, Sealions and Walrus belong to a family of animals known as ‘Pinnipeds’ and the waters off the UK and Ireland are home to the Grey and Harbour species in addition to five vagrants; the Harp, Hooded, Ringed, Bearded Seals and the occasional Walrus. For most of these common and seasonal visitors, the Welsh coast, with its expanse of rocky coastline, offshore sand banks and enclosed coves provides the perfect habitat for mating, foraging and thriving. These gregarious animals live a relatively cyclic lifestyle moving through breeding, moulting, offshore foraging seasons and finally pupping
season before beginning all over again the next year. The complexities of these seasons coupled with their role as top marine predators means that they have different requirements as they move throughout their lives and grow. Requirements that are difficult to maintain even without additional threats. Unfortunately, as is the case with a vast majority of highly mobile species, protections are complex as threats exist on different spatial and temporal scales. This makes them difficult to predict, measure and mitigate. So, what can we do to
If you find a sick or injured marine animal in need of help you can call
Alongside known threats such as pollution, habitat loss, disease, and climate change, the newest fastest growing threat facing seals is disturbance. Disturbance is a change in natural behaviour caused by a stimulus such as noise or close approaches. Disturbance is largely anthropogenic (human induced) in origin and is increasing. The post covid era saw a steep rise in people reconnecting with nature and gaining greater appreciation for blue spaces and outdoor areas. Increases in coastal tourism and recreation however has seen more disturbing conduct, longer visitation times, and close approaches with coastal and marine species. It is critical to seal survival that they are afforded undisturbed rest periods hauled out on land in coastal areas. These hours are spent building up oxygen and energy reserves in preparation for hunting and foraging during the high tide as well as digesting their previous meal. Disturbance leads to increased vigilance, chronic stress, energy deficit, and other adverse behavioural responses. This may hold even more severe consequences during pupping season where disturbance can lead to temporary pup separation, physical injuries caused by stampeding colonies, delayed pup abandonment, disruption of suckling behaviours, and forced habitat move. It is important to clarify that disturbance is often unintentional and is the result of a lack of education and awareness. As coastal stakeholders, it is our role to ensure we are fully educated and have as little impact as possible during and after our visit.
The outlook may seem a bit bleak but there is still hope. There are several dedicated organisations working collaboratively across our coastlines to protect our marine species. North Wales Seal Research Organisation (NWSRO) collect seal sightings for their citizen science database to help map seal habitat, birth rates and success, site use, and threats. Reports can be submitted at nwsro.org to contribute to these conservation efforts. British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) are the UKs leading marine animal rescue
organisation on call 24/7, 365 days a year. If you find a sick or injured marine animal in need of help you can call the hotline on 01825 765546 so medics can dispatch to the location. Lastly, Marine Environmental Monitoring (MEM) coordinate the investigation of all deceased marine species by documenting the strandings and retrieving a proportion for further post mortem investigation as all these specimens carry important evidence of marine environmental health. MEM can be reached at 0800 652 0333.
As individuals, we can use our collective voice to campaign for change. Our behaviour at the coast is ultimately what needs to change: staying hidden from wildlife and giving seals space is key. Watching quietly unheard and unseen from a distance means that we can experience the fantastic array of natural behaviours that seals exhibit when not being disturbed. We can also help by avoiding posting locations of seals on social media to limit advertising them, using ethical wildlife safe certified coastal recreation companies, limiting our interactions to 15 minutes before moving on, and contributing to citizen science projects that have greater impacts on conservation management. With small changes, collectively we can help save our species on the edge. n

Colwyn Bay guest house owners celebrate decade of success
Colwyn Bay guest house owners celebrating their ten-year anniversary of relocating to North Wales said the decision has “brought them closer as a family”.
Tracey and Joel Toulmin took ownership of Bryn Woodlands House in April 2015 – having made the permanent move 200 miles from Arlesey in Bedfordshire, which had been their home for 13 years prior.
Their daughter, Hermione-Rose, celebrated her tenth birthday at the guest house shortly after the family’s arrival. “It’s the best decision we ever made,” said Tracey, 54. “Our only regret is that we didn’t do it sooner. We have made a life for ourselves here, by the sea, beyond anything we had hoped for. We are incredibly grateful to all our guests and to the local community, who have accepted us as one of their own.”
Joel, 55, started out in hospitality as a silver service waiter at the age of 14. Both he and Tracey said they were fed up with working for other people and were looking for a new challenge when they bought Bryn Woodlands House.
“It took a couple of years to build the reputation and change local minds,” explained Joel. “But we turned things around and have worked hard to contribute to the area positively. Tracey sits on numerous Boards – including the Business Forum and the committee for the Place Plan, and she has her own show on Bayside Radio. We like to think that we’re now part of Colwyn Bay.”
Under Tracey and Joel’s ownership, Bryn Woodlands House has been four-star certified by Visit Wales. Numerous accolades include Luxury Bed & Breakfast Awards for ‘Best Use of Marketing & Social Media’ and ‘Best Breakfast’. The secret, Joel revealed, is the guest house’s use of local produce from Tatws Trading, Meat on the Corner and Fresh and Tasty Microgreens.
“Believe it or not, I’d never cooked until we came to Bryn Woodlands House!” laughed Joel. “Tracey taught me how to scramble an egg! Since I found my feet in the kitchen, I’ve cooked more than 70,000 breakfasts. Breakfast is one of those things you have to get spot on. Winning the ‘Best Breakfast’ award was great, but returning customers mean the most to us. You know you’ve done something right when people keep coming back.”
During the pandemic, Bryn Woodlands House helped to get PPE equipment to essential workers. Acting as a hub for seamstresses across North Wales, the Toulmins coordinated a team of dedicated volunteers who washed the handmade scrubs, hats and masks, put them into sealed bags and distributed them to local hospitals and care homes.
“It is one of our proudest achievements,” said Tracey, who also shaved her head in 2021 – raising £1,800 for Welsh Mountain Zoo. “The pandemic was a challenging time for everyone, so we were glad to be of practical help.”
Continuing to reflect on the previous decade, Tracey – a threetimes-published author and Llais Cymru's Welsh Women in Business Awards winner – said running Bryn Woodlands House has been “life-changing”.
“It’s an amazing thing to do, and I could never work for anyone else again,” she concluded. “It’s proper hard graft – changing beds on a daily basis – but it has brought us together as a family. We laugh every single day. Guests tell us: ‘You can tell you like what you do’ – and it’s true. Bryn Woodlands House is our home, but we want our guests to treat it like their home too. ‘Arrive as a guest, leave as a friend’ is the motto we live by.” n

On the trail
The North Wales Seafood Trail is now live – its sole aim being to highlight the fantastic fish and seafood that can be found along our beautiful coast. Cai Ross finds out more…
North Wales is surrounded by over two hundred and fifty miles of stunningly beautiful coastline. At the edges of this glorious part of the world, you can explore endless ribbons of sandy beaches, sea-sprayed coastal walks, piers, marinas, harbours, the occasional Italianate architectural marvel – and plenty of traditional fishing villages straight out of the pages of an old Poldark novel.
The North Wales fishing industry itself is, alas, finding itself caught in a perfect storm, beset from all sides. Climate change and increasingly insane financial demands are doing plenty of damage to our fishing community, and the strangling regulations and bureaucracy that they have to endure are really not helping either.
The fishing industry is part of our heritage and a manyfaceted and hugely important part of the tourism and hospitality sector in North Wales. The fish and seafood milling around our coast and in shellfish farms like Menai Oysters, all support our fishmongers and suppliers, which then support our restaurants and hotels, which look after our tourists and visitors etc etc. The ‘blue sector’ is its own eco-system which needs to be supported by all of us.
Thank goodness then for the good folk at Môr Ni Gwynedd, part of Bangor University, which is working to support our local fisheries, aquaculture, and our seafood sector in general. They have now launched The Seafood Trail / Llwybr Bwyd Môr, which aims to make it much easier for everyone to take advantage of the wealth of seafood available here, and give the entire industry a boost.
Emer McCoy, who is part of the team spearheading this campaign says they drew inspiration from ‘Ecoamgueddfa’,
a sister project based on the Llŷn Peninsula that uses trails to promote sustainable tourism and celebrate the Llŷn’s rich cultural and natural heritage. And there’s the Northern Ireland Seafood Trails too which have worked really well.
Similarly, The Seafood Trail will be linking up elements like tourism, coastal walks and cycle paths to the seafood industry in all its forms – restaurants, fishmongers and fishers, making it easier for people to access the seafood sector and make it part of their plans. In so doing, they hope to transform North Wales’s image and all for the better.
“We wanted it to be something that showcases how seafood is tied to all these disparate elements,” explains Emer. “The other thing was to try and create an identity for North Wales similar to the way, for example Padstow in Cornwall is identified as a fish and seafood-centric area. You think of Padstow, straight away you think of Rick Stein and fishing trawlers and delicious seafood. We want people to think in the same immersive way about North Wales. We want people to come and explore the North Wales coastline, go for a walk here and eat there, cycle here and eat again somewhere else, and The Seafood Trail is designed to make all that easier for them.”
If you head to their website (see below), you’ll find links to all manner of fish and seafood related businesses, and not just suppliers and restaurants. As Emer told me: “There is, for example, a link to another project called Porth i’r Plat which aimed to shorten the supply chain and gives details about which fish you can find where and how best to prepare and cook them.”
You can even – shameless plug alert – find details of my cook book, North Wales Fish & Seafood on there; reason enough, surely, to take a look!
A highlight of the website is The People’s Series, which puts the people working directly within the industry front and centre. Môr Ni’s Rhianna Parry has filmed dozens of interviews and taken beautiful photos and videos, telling their story.
“I think people are going to find this fascinating,” she says. “You want to experience how people live their lives when you travel to a new place. People love a good story. The people that I interviewed were so interesting, you could write a book about each of them, like Gareth on Ynys Enlli, for example. His family have been sheep and dairy farmers on the mainland for generations but now that he’s retired and passed it on to his daughter, he’s started fishing around the island instead. When the tourists come, he catches fish, crabs and lobsters for them, his wife cooks them and then delivers them across the island on a quad bike! And there’s so much beautiful architecture and art in Ynys Enlli and I was able to capture all that in the video. There are so many stories like that: generations of the same family in the fishing world passing on their skills and their amazing tales.”
As a restaurateur this is all music to my ears (shanty-style music, specifically, with lots of concertina and rousing choruses). I’ve long thought that North Wales was an unheralded epicentre for great food, specifically seafood, that’s best enjoyed in the place where you catch it, and I think there is so much untapped potential for seafood tourism that is just out there waiting to be harnessed. Emer agrees. “We want the Seafood Trail to encourage innovation. Someone could create
seafood tours for example, taking people around the coast to all the best places over a week, with cooking sessions and beach barbecues, something like that. And they could use the Seafood Trail as a means to create interest and gather in a prospective audience. People can use it how they want to.
“In places like Italy, France and Spain, gastronomic tourism is huge. People are taken around vineyards and shown how to cook local dishes by local chefs and then you all feast together. Food is such a wonderful way to connect people and tours like that can be great, memory-making adventures. It’s all about sharing enthusiasm.” Couldn’t agree more.
Being a Gwynedd Council SPF funded project, The Seafood Trail is currently limited to the coast of Gwynedd, but the more people who use it and sign up to it, the better the chance that it could eventually cover the entire North Wales coastline. “We already have people and contacts and artists from the rest of North Wales all willing and ready to go. It is the same water after all. It’s not like the lobsters care if they’re from Amlwch or Conwy!”
As such, I urge you to have a look at the website and see what Emer and Rhianna and the rest of Team Môr Ni have been up to, and if you’re in the fishing or tourism or hospitality sector, get in contact with them and sign up. It might feel like we’re in choppy waters at the moment, but it’s innovations like this that will pull us all together and give us all a brighter future. After all, to misquote Billy Ocean, when the going gets tough, the tough go fishing. n

Fishmongers were a once ubiquitous presence in most towns and high streets. Even Camberwick Green had one, run by the fastidious Mr Carraway. Sadly, over the years they have gone the way of record shops and dwindled away, which is a pity because like record shops, they improve life considerably.
It was sad then to hear that the owners of the awardwinning Llyn Seafoods in Pwllheli are retiring after 28 years. I wish them every happiness and hope that someone else will fill the vacuum that they’ll undoubtedly leave behind.
Put simply, you can’t beat fresh fish, particularly when you have a skilled operator behind the counter who can do all the filleting and scaling for you. There are still some excellent fishmongers out there in North Wales and it’s terribly important that we use them as often as possible.
God only knows where Paysanne would be without Mermaid Seafoods in Llandudno, who have been there even longer than we have. I still have immensely fond memories of ‘Keith The Fish,’ the great stalwart who manned his seafood stand on Conwy quay for decades.
Then there’s the Menai Seafood Company in Bangor, which is a marvel. In fact, last time I was there, I needed to speak briefly to the owner, James, but had to wait a good 40 minutes for a seemingly never-ending line of customers to pick up their fish orders – a sure sign that there are plenty of folk out there who value the expertise that a decent fishmonger can bring to the table. In fact, I was there to pick up some dressed Menai crabs, and here’s what I did with one of them.

ULTIMATE CRAB COCKTAIL
Ingredients
(Serves 2)
1 dressed Menai brown crab
2 little gem lettuce
Fennel (1/4 of a bulb)
Celery (2 sticks)
Dressing:
3 tbsp Crème Fraîche
1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
1 unwaxed lemon, zested and juiced
Fine sea salt (pinch)
Put half the zest to one side, then mix all the dressing ingredients together. Then carefully spoon the brown crabmeat out of the shell and stir that into the dressing.
Finely chop the fennel and celery. Core and shred one of the little gem lettuces, and coat the lot with dressing – not so much that it’s swimming in it.
Arrange the leaves from the other lettuce as prettily as you can in either a glass dish, or a plate or in a huge martini glass. Then place a large spoonful of the fennel mix on top. Finally, spoon the white crabmeat on top of that and sprinkle the rest of the zest over it. Serve immediately with a bottle of chilled Muscadet.
Or, you can do as the Americans do, and place it all between two pieces of bread and voila! A crab salad sandwich. n

Cocktail of the month
The Bloody Mary
A Classic With A Spicy Kick
May brings longer days, fresher mornings, and the perfect excuse for a revitalising cocktail. This month, we’re celebrating the Bloody Mary – one of the most iconic and debated drinks in cocktail history. Known for its savoury depth, spicy kick, and reputation as a go-to lunch staple, the Bloody Mary is a drink that’s as complex as its history.
A Mysterious Origin
The origins of the Bloody Mary, like a lot of cocktails, is shrouded in mystery. The most widely accepted story traces it back to the 1920s, when Fernand Petiot, a bartender at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, began mixing vodka with tomato juice. Later, when he moved to the King Cole Bar in New York, he refined the recipe by adding Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, cayenne, and lemon juice. Over the years, the Bloody Mary has evolved, with bartenders and drinkers alike adding their own signature twists to the classic formula.
At Number 25, we’re giving this timeless cocktail a unique house spin by incorporating our very own caramelised garlic vodka. This infusion adds a subtle depth and richness, complementing the savoury nature of the drink while enhancing its umami character. The result? A bold and satisfying take on a beloved classic.
Built For Perfection
We start with 40ml of vodka, add 10ml of our house caramelised garlic vodka for the extra touch of depth. Then comes the extra flavours of Worcestershire sauce, a few dashes of tabasco, a pinch of celery salt, freshly cracked
black pepper. A squeeze of lemon juice brightens the drink. The whole drink is gently stirred with high-quality tomato juice to create the perfect balance of spice, savoury and tang.
The Perfect Garnish
No Bloody Mary is complete without a garnish, and at Number 25, we keep it classic with a crisp celery stalk. Not only does it add a refreshing crunch, but it also doubles as a stirring stick, letting you adjust the spice and seasoning with each sip.
Whether you’re after a hangover cure, a lunch-time boost, or simply a deliciously savoury cocktail, our Bloody Mary delivers on all fronts. With its history rooted in classic bartending and our house-made twist elevating its flavour, this is the perfect way to toast the arrival of spring.
So, this May, swap out the chocolate eggs and sweet treats for something with a bit more punch. Try our signature Bloody Mary and discover why this cocktail has remained a favourite for nearly a century. n

OAK TIMBER & BEAMS
Raise your Glass
Spring is a wonderful time for food, and a great opportunity to try out your food and wine matching skills. There is new season lamb, asparagus and spinach available, and the woodland is full of the heady scent of wild garlic. There is a freshness to the food available that works so well with lighter, crisper wines with plenty of acidity, and a move away from the heavier stews and roasts of autumn and winter.
Both red and white wines can work well with these fresher, lighter foods. Italian wines work particularly well, often having that vivid, crunchy fresh red fruit flavour in their reds and delicate, herbal notes in the whites. Wines from cooler climes such as Burgundy and the Loire Valley in France, and from Germany and Austria, all have that zip and zest that can be so invigorating when the sun starts to awaken from its slumber.
Valpolicella, Zeni 2023 - £14.50
The perfect match for Spring lamb, this is the vinous equivalent of a spoonful of redcurrant jelly and mint sauce on your plate! Light, fresh and herbal, with bright red cherry fruit.
Saint-Aubin 1er cru Les Frionnes, Henri Prudhon et Fils 2021 - £29.50
Beautiful nose of strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry, with an earthy complexity that is just crying out for some lamb to pair with it. This also works well with the iron rich flavours of spinach in a spanakopita.
Saumur-Champigny, Tuffe, Château du Hureau 2022 - £18.60
This organic red from the Loire Valley is the classic Spring red, vibrant and pure with flavours of violets, red cherry and plum. Great with lamb, but also with that tricky pairing, grilled asparagus, and other spring greens such as broad beans and peas.
Gavi del Comune di Gavi, La Chiara 2024£18.60
La Chiara produce one of the finest Gavi around, and this is full of refreshing Granny Smiths apple, with a creamy, honeyed finish, that is uplifting and joyous.
Quincy, Domaine de Trotereau 2022 - £18.95
This Loire Sauvignon Blanc may not be as wellknown as others such as Sancerre, but that makes it great value for money. Grapefruit and lemon flavours work excellently with asparagus, peas and the fresh chèvre cheese of the area.
Austrian wines have been improving out of sight over the last 20 years, and Grüner is the flagship variety. Crisp grapefruit and green apple notes combine with the distinctive white pepper notes often found to give a delicious wine that works well with lighter chicken dishes, fish and green veg.
Mathew Evans is the North Wales, Area Sales Manager for Tanners Wines, creating wine lists for some of the best restaurants and bars in the area. He has worked for Tanners for over 13 years and is also a Certified Educator for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. He is originally from Llandudno Junction and still lives in the area. When he’s not talking about wine, he can be found watching football at Wrexham AFC, rugby league at North Wales Crusaders RLFC or playing Masters Rugby League for North Wales Buccaneers.

Renewable energy systems for your home
Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.
An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.
Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

HOW CAN FARMERS AND LANDOWNERS MAKE THE MOST OF THE RENEWABLE ENERGY BOOM?
The renewable energy sector has exploded in recent years and it’s only going to get bigger, presenting opportunities for farmers and landowners in North Wales for potentially lucrative developments.
But how do you know when a project is right for you? It’s vital to get advice from experienced professionals from the outset – and a good place to start is a new podcast from legal experts at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, based in Conwy.
Ed Nutting is a solicitor specialising in agriculture, tourism and renewable energy, working with clients across Wales assisting with the legal issues surrounding projects such as wind turbines and solar panels.
In a recent episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast, he chats with Ed Bailey, of Baileys and Partners chartered surveyors about how the renewable energy industry has changed over the years, and how the process works for farmers and landowners.
“When I started my legal career, I remember doing the odd hydroelectric lease, assisting with feed-in tariffs, small-scale solar schemes and self-build wind turbines, but things have really moved on since then,” says Ed Nutting. “Schemes now tend to be much larger – bigger solar schemes, wind turbines are getting ever bigger and so on.”
While the feed-in tariff was a fantastic incentive for landowners to take control of energy security on their own farms, projects are now more likely to be led by external companies. This presents major opportunities but also challenges for farmers and landowners, as Ed Bailey explains:
“The new generation of renewable energy projects are on a larger scale using new technologies, which can be a bit scary for some people, so we use our experience to help farmers and landowners make the most of these really exciting opportunities.
“For instance, we are seeing new commercial businesses which we may never have heard of before contacting our clients, and an important part of our role is to ensure that farmers and landowners are not taken advantage of.
“There is a whole raft of new businesses being set up who may promise the earth and we have to put our cynical glasses on to really examine that the initial approach to the client makes sense.”
But despite these challenges, the renewable energy industry is only going in one direction, with Ed Nutting predicting a growing number of opportunities in the future.
“Even without the subsidies there is still a significant push towards renewable energy, the need to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on energy being imported, and that’s not going to change so it will continue to be a massive sector,” he says.
“We are therefore seeing a growing number of developers approaching landowners with a variety of offers – some are better than others and it’s a question of weighing up what is best for you, so it’s vital to seek professional advice from day one.” n

More than a School
When it comes to your child’s education, why wait? The right time to act is not the start of a New Year – it is the moment you realise they need something more.
There are certain points in a child’s school life that seem to invite change: the move into Reception, the beginning of Year 7, or the transition into Sixth Form. Convention dictates that these are the moments when families get to consider their school options and make a decision. But when the need for something better is already clear, why wait?
Too often, children spend months or even years in educational settings that do not bring out their best. Perhaps they are not being challenged. Perhaps they have lost their spark, or their confidence has quietly faded. Perhaps they simply feel lost in the crowd. And yet the instinct is often to wait – to “see it through” until the next term, or the end of the year.
Rydal Penrhos, a leading independent school in Colwyn Bay, encourages families to think differently. With places available throughout the academic year, from Pre-School to Sixth Form, the school supports pupils joining at the moment that is right for them – not just when the calendar says so.
Transitions can be daunting. However, with the right support and the right environment, change becomes an opportunity. Rydal Penrhos offers small class sizes, high quality teaching, and a warm, welcoming community. Every child is treated as an individual, with their talents, interests, and potential nurtured from day one – whether that be the first day in September, or any other time in the school year.
New pupils are quickly absorbed into the life of the school, where pastoral care is embedded into everyday routines and learning goes far beyond the classroom. Whether it is on the sports field, through music and drama, outdoor learning, or a wide range of clubs and trips, pupils are given every opportunity to build confidence and discover the very best version of themselves.
Academic excellence is a natural outcome of this kind of approach. In 2024, Rydal Penrhos achieved a 100% A-Level pass rate for the fifth consecutive year, while their GCSE
candidates achieved the top grades at more than four times the Welsh national average. However, while examination results matter, they are not the only measure of success. The school focuses on preparing pupils for life; instilling curiosity, resilience, creativity, and a sense of purpose.
“Our admissions journey with Rydal Penrhos was nothing short of exceptional,” explained Mr E, a Year 4 parent. “We decided to move our eldest daughter, and from the very first interaction, the school went above and beyond to welcome us as a family into their supportive community. The team took great care in understanding not only our aspirations but also our daughter's unique interests, ensuring that her journey would be shaped by more than solely academic success.
“What truly reassured us was seeing the school’s ethos in action – at every step, from our initial visit to her first days, the staff and students alike demonstrated the values that make Rydal Penrhos so special. The warmth, encouragement, and genuine commitment to nurturing individual potential and passions gave us the confidence that we had made the right choice.”
If your child is not thriving where they are – academically, socially, or emotionally – the question is not “when is the right time?” It is “why wait?” n

Training Programme Personalisation
TAMSYN GOSTAGE-NAYLOR FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF FIT EXPLAINS HOW THEY CAN PERSONALISE YOUR TRAINING PROGRAMME IN ORDER TO MAXIMISE YOUR RESULTS…
Starting training can be really hard and consistently following a training programme can be even more difficult. There are no shortcuts to staying healthy – it takes time and dedication, which is why we are here to provide knowledge, support and motivation needed to achieve your personal goals. It can also be enjoyable and sustainable when you start seeing and feeling the results of your training. As a PT, the most satisfying aspect of this job is seeing you make positive progress a realising your health and fitness goals are within reach.
Depending on where you are in your journey to achieve your health and fitness goals, we want to help you create healthy, sustainable habits that are personalised and will make you feel strong, confident, motivated and energised.
To personalise your training and establish a structured programme that will work for you, we follow a step by step process and repeat the cycle:
1. Perform a needs analysis – This is to gain an understanding of you and establish:
J Your goals
J Training history
J Injuries
J Body composition
J Current strength and condition
2. Determine your training frequency – How often do you want to train? Which days do you want to train? We need to consider your lifestyle and how to eliminate obstacles so you can train. You may need to schedule your training into your day-to-day calendar.
3. Start Training – You put the training plan into action. Consistent training, combined with proper nutrition will lead to physical changes. At 3-6 weeks of consistent training, you will notice initial changes with improved energy levels and mood due to increased physical activity and the release of endorphins in your body. At 8-12 weeks there are more noticeable improvements in strength, endurance, body composition and enhanced overall fitness, making activities of daily living easier.
4. Re-assess – We will re-assess after we have completed the initial programme. We repeat the needs analysis, set new goals and time-frames and train again. And so the cycle goes on…
To maximise results, it is important to consistently follow your structured training and maintain a healthy diet. Everyone’s body responds differently, so we will work together and track progress through regular assessments in order to make necessary adjustments to your training programme. n

The Importance of Saying Goodbye
“Just put me out in a cardboard box” or “I want one of those cremations I’ve seen on the telly!”
These are sentiments we hear more often than you might imagine. People frequently express wishes to avoid the fuss or expense of traditional funerals, believing this makes things easier for their families. But what happens when those left behind still feel the need for closure?
Over recent months, we've supported several families through exactly this dilemma. They wanted to respect their loved one's wish for simplicity, yet found themselves struggling emotionally, needing their own way to honour the person they’d lost.
One family was divided over how best to proceed. Some felt a full funeral wasn't fitting, while others couldn't bear the thought of doing nothing at all. Ultimately, they chose a fuss-free, gentle farewell with a simple cardboard coffin and heartfelt words. It honoured their dad's wishes beautifully and provided the meaningful goodbye they all needed.
Another family initially opted for an unattended cremation but soon realised it meant missing a chance to say their final goodbye at the chapel. After discussing their feelings openly, they compromised, holding a simple, quiet service that aligned with their mum’s wish for minimal fuss yet offered them comfort.
Because funerals aren't solely for the person who's passed; they're profoundly important for those who remain.
Funerals Have Evolved
Today, funerals don't have to follow traditional expectations. Modern farewells can reflect the unique personality of your loved one and your family's needs. A farewell can be:
J Listening to a personalised playlist of favourite songs.
J An outdoor gathering with a tree-planting ceremony.
J A relaxed coffee morning or gathering at their favourite pub.
J A vibrant, colour-themed celebration.
Saying goodbye doesn't have to be sombre or traditional – it can simply be what feels right for you.
Unattended Doesn’t Have to Mean Uncared For
We understand that some people really do want no fuss. Even an unattended cremation, however, can be handled with dignity and care, locally managed by professionals you know and trust. Families are always informed of the cremation date and are welcome to say goodbye at Colwyn Bay crematorium.
If, in time, you feel the need to commemorate your loved one's life, we're always here to help – whether in a small, intimate setting or a larger memorial gathering. It’s never too late to remember someone special.
A Life Well Lived Deserves to Be Remembered
Every life is unique, filled with memories and meaning. A final goodbye should reflect this, offering comfort rather than regret.
If you’re facing this decision and aren’t sure what feels right, we’re here to listen. There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye – only what works for you. n

Law firm supports Traitors TV star in his quest to inspire Andrew Jenkins, who shot to fame in the BBC show, The Traitors, is an inspirational character, overcoming a serious brain injury which almost cost him his life at the age of 21. He now helps people overcome their own challenges and has teamed up with North Wales law firm, Lanyon Bowdler, to share his story in a new episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast. Andrew is an ambassador for the Headway charity campaign, A Life Rewritten, and recently walked 1,200km in 42 days, through Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and finishing in Wales to raise money and awareness for the charity. He said: “I was in a car crash when I was 21, and was in a coma for four weeks. When I woke from the coma, the first thing the doctor said was that I was never going to walk again. My response to that was to say I guarantee that I will walk out of this hospital, and two weeks later I had learned to walk again. I was proud to complete the 1,200km walk, and I did it to show the people who don’t believe in themselves, are told they can’t do something, that if you work hard enough you can achieve great things in life.” Debbie Humphries, of the personal injury team at Lanyon Bowdler, was among a group of staff from the firm who joined Andrew on his walk between Chirk and Melverley, and said he was an inspiration. www.lblaw.co.uk/knowledge
Look after your eyes with the North Wales Eye Specialist Centre
A pterygium (pronounced tuh-RIJ-ee-um) is a non-cancerous growth on the clear surface of the eye (called the conjunctiva) that can slowly extend onto the cornea (the front window of the eye). It’s often shaped like a wedge or triangle and usually appears on the side closest to the nose. Pterygium is commonly caused by long-term sun exposure, wind, or dust. It may cause redness, irritation, or blurry vision if it grows too far. Wearing sunglasses can help prevent it. In more serious cases, it can be removed with minor surgery if it affects vision or causes discomfort.

Pensions and inheritance tax
The government is showing no signs of changing its plans to levy inheritance tax (IHT) on pensions, warns Hartey Wealth Management. Sometimes what creates the most noise in the wake of a Budget is not what will hurt the taxpaying population most in the future. A perfect example from last October’s Budget is the set of measures aimed at increasing IHT receipts. The proposed introduction of IHT on pension benefits has not as yet produced any organised blockades of central London nor caused disruption of ministerial speeches. However, the reform is projected to yield £1,460 million extra in IHT receipts in 2029/30. For comparison, the total amount raised by IHT in 2025/26 is forecast by the OBR to be £8,700 million. The final details of the new regime are still awaited and there might be further consultation. For now, if you have any doubts about the wisdom of making further pension contributions, do take advice. www.harteywm.co.uk

New exhibitions at Ruthin Craft Centre
Ruthin Craft Centre have an amazing collection of new exhibitions opening on April 5th.
Their main galleries will show the work of Ptolemy Mann & Jessie Chorley. Ptolemy’s woven work pushes the boundaries of fine art textiles in a response to a recent visit to Japan. While there is a particularity to Jessie’s hand stitched work, each piece of fabric, and strand of embroidery thread is chosen for its inherent qualities and the memories and feelings it evokes. In the new CELF gallery there will be a selection of works from the Anita Besson Collection of ceramics, curtesy of National Museum of Wales and the Derek Williams Trust. In their Studio Printmaker Gallery, Marian Haf’s work takes inspiration from her life in rural West Wales, communicating ideas of home, community and shared experience of hiraeth. Northwest Wales potter Ian Marsh’s work will be shown in their Ceramic Portal. ruthincraftcentre.org.uk
