NWM November 2025

DEAR READER

I know what you’re thinking… it’s only November and North Wales Magazine have gone and put a Christmas tree on the front cover! Why, oh why, does Christmas seem to arrive earlier and earlier every single year?

Well, I have a good reason for promoting Christmas in November, and it all comes down to… being organised!! Yes that’s right, I’m all for getting your Christmas shopping done as early as possible, so that you can spend the run up to the big day actually enjoying the festivities.

So it’s with that in mind that we have our fabulous 2025 Christmas Gift Guide on page 35. We have done the leg work on where to find the best presents this year so that you don’t have to. Whoever you are buying for, there are some great ideas in the guide – and you can also rest easy knowing that you have done your bit for the local economy to boot.

It is estimated that for every £10 spent with a local business, £3.80 stays within the local

area. In fact, it is believed that if we all spent just £5 per week in our local independent shops as opposed to online, then the added boost to local economies would be a whopping £13.5 billion annually.

So embrace the shopping early. Spend your time researching gifts that won’t just please the recipient, but that will help to improve North Wales as whole. And when it’s all bought and wrapped in November, you can put your feet up in December while watching a Christmas film with a mince pie (or two)…

from you!

November is a time of preparation and activity for the red squirrel, as autumn is when their natural food sources are most available. While squirrels don't actually hibernate, they are much less active in winter – in very bad weather, they tend to stay in their dreys – meaning that November is a great time to spot them as they stock up on vital supplies. And there is no better place to go red squirrel spotting than on Angelsey… From Plas Newydd’s private red squirrel woodland to the dedicated red squirrel feeders in Newborough Forest, your odds of spotting one of these rare creatures is actually much higher on the island, as it is home to 60% of Wales’ entire red squirrel population.

Rhyl

Bethany Birch visits Rhyl, and discovers a seaside town with a spectacular beach…

Perched on the northern coast of North Wales, Rhyl is a seaside town and community in Denbighshire that has long captured the hearts of visitors. Sitting at the mouth of the River Clwyd, this coastal town is known for its miles of sandy beaches stretching along a two-mile promenade. November is a wonderful time to visit, as autumn deepens and the gentle tinkle of Christmas bells begins to fill the crisp sea air.

As the seasons shift, the weather around Rhyl can be a bit hit or miss – typical of British weather – with blustery winds and downpours keeping visitors on their toes. But don’t let that put you off! There’s plenty to enjoy, whether you’re donning your raincoat and wellies for a bracing stomp along the beach, spending an afternoon at the arcade or amusement park, or cosying up in one of the town’s many cafés or pubs. On sunnier days, the fresh sea air invites you outdoors, whether for a scenic walk along the coast, a gentle cycle ride, or simply watching the late-autumn waves roll in along the expansive

The promenade remains a popular spot, even as the summer crowds wane. The funfair and amusements might be quieter, but the atmosphere is far from dull. Rhyl Harbour, a short stroll from the beach, has been rejuvenated into a bustling hub with new cafés, shops, and seafood restaurants that serve up local catches, perfect for a warming meal after a walk in the chilly breeze. Notably, the Queen’s Market redevelopment has introduced 16 food and retail units, a double-sided bar, and a spacious events venue, all housed in a modernised historic building.

Meanwhile, the newly refurbished Rhyl Pavilion continues to be a cultural beacon, offering a packed schedule of music, theatre, and comedy shows that brighten the darker evenings and bring the community together. This is just one part of a broader £65 million investment in Rhyl, which also includes the SC2 Waterpark, the 1891 Restaurant, and other key regeneration projects revitalising the town. Its ongoing regeneration efforts blend the charm of its Victorian seaside heritage with exciting new developments, breathing fresh life into this once booming resort. This blend

On sunnier days, the fresh sea air invites you outdoors, whether for a scenic walk along the coast, a gentle cycle ride, or simply watching the late-autumn waves roll in along the expansive seafront.

Getting to Rhyl couldn’t be easier. Well connected by train and road, it’s a popular choice for a short autumn getaway or a day trip from nearby cities

of old and new allows you to explore traditional attractions like the Rhyl Little Theatre and the Pont-y-Ddraig Harbour Bridge, while also enjoying the newer leisure spots born from recent revitalisation projects.

History lovers will find plenty to discover here. The Rhyl Miniature Railway, operating into late autumn weekends, offers a nostalgic journey perfect for families and railway enthusiasts alike. In the meantime, the Rhyl Museum offers fascinating insights into the town’s past, from its days as a Victorian hotspot to its role in regional maritime history.

Nature lovers won’t be disappointed either. Beyond the sands of Rhyl, the nearby Clwydian Range and Dee Estuary provide excellent opportunities for exploration and wildlife spotting. November is a great time for birdwatching along the estuary, where migratory birds settle for the winter months. Just a short drive inland, Loggerheads Country Park showcases peaceful woodlands with stunning autumnal colours, ideal for hiking, photography, or simply soaking up a moment of tranquillity away from the coast.

Closer to town, Brickfield Pond nature reserve offers a peaceful pocket of greenery for short walks or birdwatching. And while the Marine Lake’s water sports quieten down for winter, it remains a unique feature of Rhyl’s landscape. The Rhyl Events Arena, though livelier in warmer months, also reflects the town’s ongoing focus on arts, entertainment, and community life throughout the year.

As November gradually nudges the town towards the festive season, Rhyl begins to sparkle with early celebrations. Local markets, light switch-on events, and community gatherings bring a festive buzz to the area. Shops fill with unique gifts and seasonal treats, and cafés serve comforting drinks and baked goods, perfect rewards after a brisk beach walk. Getting to Rhyl couldn’t be easier. Well connected by train and road, it’s a popular choice for a short autumn getaway or

a day trip from nearby cities. Just a short drive away lie the neighbouring towns of Prestatyn and its popular Prestatyn Beach, Talacre with its striking sandy shores and lighthouse, and the historic town of Abergele are all within easy reach from Rhyl via the nearby A55 – the main artery running across the north of Wales.

Whether you’re drawn by the fresh air and vast sandy beaches, the rich cultural scene, or the chance to explore the beautiful natural surroundings, Rhyl offers an authentic North Wales coastal experience all year round. So pull on your coat, grab your beanie and a dose of good spirits, and set off to discover Rhyl. n

In a world of online booking sites and endless choice, travel has never been more convenient – or more confusing. That’s why personal travel consultants have never been more valuable. Behind each and every holiday that Tailormade Escapes plan are hundreds of moving parts that all need to come together perfectly, and that’s what directors Ian Pritchard-Jones and Rich Goodwin love doing.

The word consultant can sound expensive, but the service provided by Tailormade Escapes is completely free. They are paid by the tour operators, not by their clients, so you get all the expertise and support at no extra cost. They use over 450 trusted suppliers to find the right holiday for every traveller – whether that’s a five-star escape, a river cruise, or a multi-centre adventure. And every trip that they book is fully protected by ATOL, so your money and travel plans are always safe.

Cruising, for example, has changed dramatically. From boutique ships to “ship-within-a-ship” concepts like Celebrity’s The Retreat and MSC’s Yacht Club, there’s something for everyone. You unpack once, see the world, and enjoy fine dining and entertainment at sea. River cruising has also become hugely popular – perfect for culture lovers who like to explore new cities without ever changing hotels.

And then there’s Mauritius, one of Rich and Ian’s personal favourites. With no jet lag, year-round sunshine, world-class golf, tennis, and spa facilities, it’s paradise perfected. The Beachcomber Hotels there offer superb service, and a unique “Dine Around” programme that lets you experience multiple restaurants during your stay. It’s the ideal mix of relaxation, exploration, and luxury.

At Tailormade Escapes, everything that they do is about care, connection, and detail. Ian and Rich take time to get to know each of their clients, listen to what matters most, and craft a holiday that feels effortless.

And their biggest USP is that they genuinely care. Every trip means something to them, and their clients become part of the Tailormade Escapes family.

So whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, planning a family reunion, or simply ready for a well-deserved break, Tailormade Escapes will make sure it’s personal from start to finish.

Because booking a holiday shouldn’t feel like a chore — it should feel like the beginning of the adventure. n

Unleashed

The children’s series taking over bedtime…

What does a Financial Hall of Famer do to unwind? Meditate? Golf? Not Karl Hartey. He writes children’s books – about his two fluffy Newfipoos, Mollie and Tobie.

Now with over 35 titles and counting, the Mollie and Tobie series has become a global hit – capturing imaginations, tickling funny bones, and reminding parents that a great bedtime story beats screen time every time.

Each tale stars Mollie, the wise and calm black Newfipoo, and Tobie, a chocolate-brown ball of mischief. Real-life dogs turned fictional heroes, their adventures take young readers on unforgettable journeys – from Cornish beaches to Greek islands, Dubai deserts to Canadian forests.

They even stay local in Shropshire Tails 2, where the duo visit the iconic British Ironworks Centre, proving you don’t need a

passport for a great adventure – just imagination and a fluffy best friend.

The stories are rich in humour, heart, and culture – often ending with a good giggle and a gentle message about kindness, friendship, or simply never giving up.

Recent hits include Mollie and Tobie: Canadian Caper, Palm Springs Paws, Santa Barbara Tails, and South Beach Tails – each one combining local flavour with big adventure and Tobie’s unfiltered chaos.

But 2025 marks two big moments for the series. First: the launch of Code Name P.A.W. – a brand-new spy spin-off for older readers aged 8–14. In this thrilling new arc, Mollie and Tobie are recruited into a secret animal intelligence agency. Expect gadgets, danger, disguises…

and Tobie somehow setting off alarms he was meant to disable.

And second: the release of their most magical book yet – Mollie and Tobie: The Great Christmas Rescue. When Santa’s sleigh gets stuck, there’s only one duo to call. Packed with snow, sleigh rides and sausage-fuelled heroics, it’s the ultimate festive read.

All the books are beautifully illustrated with lifelike, photo-style images that bring Mollie and Tobie to life – making them feel like part of the family.

For Karl, these stories are more than just books. “They’re a way to connect generations,” he says. “Parents reading to their kids. Grandparents laughing along. And children discovering the magic of using their own imagination instead of another screen.”

Whether you’re cuddled up by the fire, reading one chapter a night, or gifting the latest adventure to a young bookworm — Mollie and Tobie promises stories full of joy, courage and a few perfectly-timed burps.

So, ditch the controller. Close the tablet. Open a book. It’s time to join the bedtime pack — and let Mollie and Tobie lead the way. n

All books — including the Christmas special and Code Name P.A.W. series — are available now on Amazon.

Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard

grapevine

It takes a year of love (and hard work!) to get the perfect bottle of wine ready for Christmas. Local winemakers Colin and Charlotte Bennett reflect on the last 12 months…

As we come into autumn, we reflect on a wonderful year 2025 has been. The harvest is complete, and we look forward to tasting the wines from an exceptional vintage.

From pruning in lovely spring weather, to a calm early summer, creating perfect conditions for flowering, followed by one of the best summers on record.

A wine makers number one saying is “great wine is made in the vineyard, not in the winery”. Wine is made through a natural process, so it’s all about the quality of the fruit. We are perfectly sited for cultivating grapes. The vines are planted on well drained, shale slate, which also adds to the unique ‘terroir’ and gives our wines their distinct characteristics.

Combine this with a scientifically proven microclimate known as the foehn effect, giving mild winters and less rainfall than surrounding areas. All this comes together to allow us a longer ripening season and to successfully grow traditional varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Our signature wines come from cool climate varieties including Solaris and Rondo, which make wonderful white, red, rosé and sparkling wines.

Earlier in the year we celebrated Welsh Wine Week, with top class food and wine pairings with our friends at Paysanne, Deganwy and Jackdaw in Conwy, and Y Marram on Anglesey, showcasing the best of local Welsh produce, paired with our wines.

We also hosted a cheese and wine pairing at Vinomondo in Conwy and invited Dylans development chef to rustle up

Our barbecues have gone down a storm this year and we are pleased to have hosted them all outdoors! From ten-hour cooked pulled pork, to locally caught seabass, tantalising the tastebuds of our guests, whilst enjoying a glass of wine or two with the view of the Snowdonia mountains. The perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Our vineyard tours are still in full flow with limited availability to the end of November. There is nothing pleases us more, than seeing the smiling faces of our guests enjoying a glass of our award-winning wines, whilst feasting on our delicious grazing boards.

This year we have added some festive events, and we are thrilled that Sarah from Paddock Flowers will be returning to host our Festive Wreath Making. We can cater for private groups of up to 28 people, so please enquire for your special event.

The vineyard is a riot of autumn colours as we turn our attention to festive period, working closely with local producers, to put together a range of Welsh Hampers that showcase the best of local food and drink. Tour vouchers are also a favourite gift at Christmas – but who wouldn’t be happy with a bottle of award-winning local wine! n

Making memories

Preserve your precious memories with The Memory Lab – North Wales’ friendly digitising service…

At The Memory Lab, they believe every photo, video, and keepsake tells a story worth saving – and this Christmas, those stories make the most meaningful gifts. Founded by Beth Ware, The Memory Lab was created with a clear ethos: to help families protect, preserve, and reconnect with their most precious moments.

The Memory Lab is a family-run, online business based in Colwyn Bay, serving customers across North Wales and the whole of the UK. They specialise in photo scanning, slide and album scanning, restoration, and VHS tape digitising – making it easy to bring your memories into the digital age, just in time to share them round the table during the festive season!

Whether it’s a box of old slides, a pile of fading prints, or hours of home video on VHS, they’ll turn your past into something you can enjoy today and treasure tomorrow. And with a USB included in every order, you’ll have your newly digitised memories at your fingertips – ready to view, share, and keep safe with loved ones.

Looking for a more unique present for a loved one this year? They also offer gift vouchers – the ideal way to give someone the joy of reliving their favourite memories.

They’ve made it easy and flexible to use their service. Locally, they offer drop-off and collection by appointment, and for customers further afield, their secure postal service options let you send items with confidence from anywhere in the UK. Everything is returned safely, along with your newly digitised keepsakes.

Digitising protects your memories from time, wear, and outdated technology. Photos fade, tapes deteriorate, and viewing equipment becomes harder to find. But by preserving them now, you ensure your memories are not only safe but easy to enjoy with family and friends for many Christmases to come.

The Memory Lab offers the following services:

J High-resolution photo, slide, and album scanning

J Professional photo restoration

Stone Circle Mead

Stone Circle Mead is a Wrexham-based business that focus on simplicity and purity.

Many of their flavours are inspired by the natural elements on offer in Wales, including foraged ingredients that make Stone Circle Mead‘s products totally entwined with the land it comes from. This is an intoxicating prospect (as mead usually is) – a synergy between skilled mead-makers and the natural world, coming together to create beautiful flavours. Each bottle of Stone Circle Mead seems intently focused on simplicity, and the honest expression of natural taste. Their traditional mead is fantastic with rich chocolate puddings, while the spiced mead, twice-fermented with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger, is delicious over ice in summer and warmed in autumn/winter – the 'granddaddy' of mulled wine. Finally, the apple & honey mead is best served chilled as an accompaniment to cheese or pork, duck or goose. And, of course, all three make a fantastic Christmas gift… www.stonecirclemeadcompany.co.uk

Marching into North Wales

The second Tattoo Cymru marched into North Wales once again this year with one of the biggest stage show casts in the UK. Nearly 300 performers wowed audiences with dazzling displays of music, dance, song and precision drill. From pipers and drummers to harpists and ukulele’s, the show had something for everyone including acts that even entertained the shows youngest fan, internet sensation “Frank the Soldier” aged just seven!

Cllr Beverly Parry Jones, Armed Forces Champion said: “Tattoo Cymru is always a highlight in Wrexham’s events calendar. It’s a wonderful way to bring people together, celebrate the talents of our military and community performers, and reflect on the stories and sacrifices made by those who served.”

The shows producer Gareth Butler said: “For those who have been before, Tattoo Cymru is a chance to experience the energy, skill and pageantry that make it such a standout event in the Welsh calendar. For first-time visitors, it’s an opportunity to see a unique mix of tradition and performance that you won’t find anywhere else in Wales. We are so grateful to our hosting partner Wrexham Lager, and our main events sponsors North Wales Magazine and Number 25 Bar and Bistro. Thanks also to our supporters’ essentials magazine, Wrexham Supporters Trust, WXM Photography and Wrexham County Borough Council and our wonderful volunteers”

This year’s show welcomed performances from The Fron Male Voice Choir, The Royal Welch Fusiliers Corps of Drums, Emmay School of Irish Dancing from Connah’s Quay, Champion Welsh Closcio dancer Daniel Jones and a moving performance from Ava Gordon Butler and Duo Lumière commemorating the liberation of the concentration camps, The Scots Guard Association Pipes and Drums, The Yorkshire Volunteers Band & Corps of Drums, Acceler8 Brass Band, The George Formby Society, The Greater Manchester RAFAC Wing Band & Corps of Drums, 145 Squadron Drill Display Team, Tameside Sea Cadets who all joined together for the show’s majestic grand finale. Tattoo Cymru once again promoted the fantastic work carried out by veterans’ charity The Not Forgotten. The evening was once again Narrated by Gareth Casey-Morris. n

Conwy has always been of extreme interest to history fans, on account of its well-preserved town walls but principally because of the large, castle-shaped thing just beyond Telford’s suspension bridge. And yes, Conwy Castle is a miraculously well maintained, historically significant and globally recognised icon of medieval architecture, and an absolute must-see for tourists and history buffs alike.

Food for thought

and spent nine years extending and adorning it into one of the most impressive homes in North Wales (his initials and family crest are carved into the woodwork at any given opportunity). A well-travelled Tudor diplomat, he picked up a nasty leg wound fighting the French at Boulogne. However, that didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for French wine, which he imported into Conwy in vast amounts, much as my Dad used to do in the 1990s. Great minds etc!

However, there is another site within Conwy’s walls which keeps its light under something of a bushel, but do not be fooled by its apparent modesty. So modest, in fact that I’d been walking past Plas Mawr unawares for years. To my eternal discredit, I thought it was a simple two-up, three down Elizabethan town house that had enjoyed a touch of restoration, but that is merely the gatehouse. Step inside and you’ll find, Tardis-like, a grand and opulent home stretching back all the way up Crown Lane, built around stunning courtyards and gardens.

Cadw have done such an extraordinary job over the years of restoring the building to its 16th Century golden age – as detailed in a video that you can watch inside – that it’s easy to imagine yourself living there in the late 1500s, gossiping about various traitor-scandals and wondering if it be grouse or baked peahen for supper after evensong.

The original owner, Robert Wynn bought the house in 1576

MOULES MARINIÈRES DU PAYS DE GALLES

Ingredients

Serves 2 (mains) 4 (starters)

120g butter

I would urge anyone who hasn’t visited Plas Mawr, tourist or resident, to rope off a few hours to visit and spend as much time there as you can. It’s the perfect place to declutter the mind and divest oneself of 21st Century tribulations. Plus, if you have children, they can be dressed up in Elizabethan costumes and taught how to say, ‘forsooth’ and ‘prithee.’

Even as far back as Robert Wynn’s time, Conwy residents would have looked forward to November as the local mussels, then as now, reach their peak. As the days shorten, a kind of solace can be found on Conwy quay and bought in bags by the kilo. There are lots of different ways to prepare them, but my go-to recipe for Conwy mussels is invariably the classic Marinières method, Clipped from the pages of that towering literary behemoth, North Wales Fish & Seafood – the perfect Christmas gift, hint, hint – this is Toby Watson’s version of that all-time classic. n

2 finely sliced shallots and 1 very finely chopped leek

400 ml white wine

2.5kg mussels

Small bunch of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

100 ml double cream

1 clove of roughly chopped garlic

Crusty bread

Heat the butter in a large heavy bottomed pot on low heat, once it has melted add the garlic, leek and shallots and cook until soft. Throw in the white wine, a good pinch of salt and cracked pepper. Reduce by a third, then throw in the mussels and cover with a lid. After seven minutes shake the pot, throw in the cream and flat leaf parsley. Return the lid for a further two minutes. Serve straight away with crusty bread.

Meet the

Chef

We ask Luke Selby, future Chef Partner at Palé Hall, all about his exciting new role…

Why are you taking on the Chef Partner position at Palé Hall?

I’ve always known that my next step would take me back to the countryside. There’s something about working and living in a rural setting that really appeals to me – the space, the landscape, the connection to the land. I’ve spent a fair bit of time fishing in that part of North Wales, not far from Snowdonia, and it’s always stayed with me as somewhere I’d love to spend more time.

What makes Palé Hall so special?

It’s a magical place. The history of the house, the breathtaking countryside that surrounds it, and the wealth of incredible ingredients right on its doorstep – it all comes together in such a unique way. Wales is this wonderfully rich pocket of Britain, full of extraordinary produce and passionate people. There’s a deep sense of place here.

Have you spent much time in North Wales before?

I’ve visited over the years, mostly on holidays, and I’ve always felt an immediate connection with the area. It’s stunningly beautiful and so peaceful, and the people are genuinely some of the warmest I’ve met. North Wales isn’t necessarily the first place people think of when they talk about great restaurants, but the hospitality here is second to none. There’s a generosity of spirit that I find really inspiring.

What are you most looking forward to when it comes to living and working in the area?

I’m really excited about becoming part of the community – not just within the team at Palé Hall but also with the local farmers, producers and artisans. My role goes far beyond the kitchen: I’ll be overseeing the entire food and beverage offering across the estate, so there’s a real opportunity to create something cohesive and special, deeply rooted in the region.

Can you explain more about your role at Palé Hall

It’s a broad role, which is exactly what excites me. I’ll be responsible for the food offering throughout the main hotel –from the fine dining restaurant, which will relaunch in 2026, to breakfast, room service and events. I’ll also be looking after The Bryntirion Inn, a beautiful 300-year-old inn with rooms that sits on the estate, as well as the shoot hospitality we run for a few special days each year. It’s a chance to shape a full culinary journey for guests.

How do you see the hotel evolving once you step into your position in early 2026?

The idea is for a stay at Palé Hall to become more of a true culinary escape. Food is already a big part of why people visit, but we want to take that further – to offer the ultimate foodie weekend. Guests might dine one night in the main restaurant, the next at The Bryntirion Inn, enjoy an exceptional breakfast, wander through the kitchen garden, learn about local Welsh produce, and, of course, drink some brilliant wine and cocktails. It’s about creating an experience that’s both luxurious and deeply connected to its surroundings.

How do you plan to work with neighbouring producers and suppliers in the area?

This is a part of the role I’m really excited about. I’ll be spending a lot of time visiting suppliers across the region, building genuine relationships and bringing their incredible produce into our restaurants. There are so many lesserknown producers doing outstanding work, and I’d love to help shine a light on them – to put their ingredients on the plate and share their stories with our guests.

Tell us more about sustainability practices surrounding your work at Palé Hall.

Sustainability will be at the heart of what we do. We’ll be looking at zero-waste practices and constantly developing the kitchen garden, with the aim of becoming as self-sufficient as possible. Sourcing will be almost exclusively from Wales and the nearby English border, supporting local wherever we can.

How do you hope your appointment will help shape how people see North Wales as a food destination?

North Wales already has some brilliant restaurants, but there’s still room for it to grow as a culinary destination on a global stage. If we can play a part in encouraging more food lovers to travel here – to explore, to eat, to experience – then that’s something I’d be incredibly proud of. We’ve got ambitious plans for the years ahead and hope that, in time, Palé Hall will become a name that food lovers around the world recognise and want to experience for themselves. n

Cocktail of the month

The Mulled Manhattan

As the days grow shorter and the chill sets in, there’s something irresistible about a cocktail that can warm you from the inside out. For November at Number 25, we’re turning to one of the most timeless drinks in the cocktails, the Manhattan. We at Number 25 are giving it a seasonal twist that’s perfect for the approach of winter, and promptly named it the Mulled Manhattan.

The original Manhattan dates back to the late 19th Century, with stories placing its origin in New York City’s Manhattan Club around the 1880s. It’s a cocktail that has stood the test of time, beloved for its perfect balance of sweetness, strength, and spice. Traditionally, it combines rye or bourbon with sweet vermouth and a dash or two of Angostura bitters, stirred over ice and served straight up with a cherry or an orange twist. The result is smooth, aromatic, and deeply satisfying model of cocktail simplicity and sophistication.

The Manhattan is a drink that suits November perfectly. Its deep amber hue and warming notes of whisky and spice mirror the changing season fires crackling, leaves turning, and the first signs of frost. It’s a drink for slower evenings, for sipping rather than slinging back, and for savouring the richness of autumn before the rush of December begins.

At Number 25, we’ve reimagined this classic for the season with our Mulled Manhattan. We’ve taken the essence of

mulled wine, that comforting blend of red wine, sugar, cinnamon, clove, star anise and orange zest, and reduced it into a syrupy infusion. A small measure of this mulled wine reduction is stirred into the traditional Manhattan mix of bourbon, sweet vermouth, and bitters. The result is a cocktail that bridges the gap between two great winter warmers: the elegance of the Manhattan and the nostalgic comfort of mulled wine.

The aroma alone evokes the spirit of Bonfire Night and the promise of Christmas to come, while the flavour remains balanced and refined. It’s familiar yet exciting, festive without being overindulgent – which is exactly what November calls for.

Join us this month at Number 25 and settle in with our Mulled Manhattan. A classic reborn for the season of spice and firelight. n

Raise your Glass

Château Doisy-Daëne, Bordeaux Grand Vin

Sec, Dubordieu 2022 £29.95

Doisy-Daëne is famous for its intense, long lived sweet Sauternes, but this dry white made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc has a complexity and richness that is hard to beat. Crisp, appley, peachy and with a creamy vanilla note from some barrel ageing, this is perfect with meaty white fish like cod, John Dory or turbot.

Tanners Super Claret, Haut-Médoc 2019

£16.50

Bordeaux has long been a favourite place for me, having travelled there a few times over the years to visit the beautiful vineyards, and to see Wales play their first match in a major tournament in 58 years in 2016 versus Slovakia. It’s a city with very fond memories for me! The wines are incredible, and along with the famous names (with superstar pricing!) dotted around the region there are many lesser-known names that offer terrific value for money too. It’s knowing what to look for and being prepared to try new wines. Remember, it’s a huge area under vine, split into the ‘Left Bank’ and the ‘Right Bank’ of the Gironde estuary. The left bank reds are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon-led; Merlot is king everywhere else. Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot are also widely grown. The whites, including dessert wines, are made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with Muscadelle helping out too.

Tanners Sauternes – half bottle £14.90

Sauternes is truly one of the great wines of the world, and our own label comes from the famous Sichel family of Château Palmer and Angludet fame. The grapes that make this come from some VERY prestigious vineyards, and this gives a honeyed, pineapple character that works well not just with desserts, but as an apéritif or with savoury food like blue cheese or pâté.

Our fifth incarnation of our eagerly sought after Super Claret, is this superb Haut-Médoc from a much-loved château! This blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a dash of Petit Verdot, is from the excellent 2019 vintage and is ready for drinking now or will age for a few years too. Silky soft, full of blackcurrant fruit and a touch of earthiness to balance out, I’d like a glass of this with roast beef and all the trimmings.

Château La Gurgue, Margaux 2017 £37.00

Margaux, in the south of the Médoc area just north of the city, is famous for reds that are a little lighter in style, with aromatic, violet notes from the Petit Verdot grown widely in the appellation. A bit less Cabernet Sauvignon, and a bit more Merlot makes for a more approachable style that goes particularly well with game – I like this with roast partridge.

Château Montaiguillon, Montagne-SaintEmilion 2021 £19.80

A long-time favourite that is consistently good year in year out. Made from mostly Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Plummy, strawberry and blackcurrant fruit with plush, velvety tannins make this very drinkable without having to age it for years. This ensures that it pairs well with beef, mushrooms, or even a great match for the classic Christmas dinner (more on that next month!).

Pomerol, Jean-Pierre Moueix 2020 £32.00

J-P Moueix own many big names around Pomerol, and also have access to some fantastic grapes grown in the appellation, to make this classic example of a Pomerol. Rich, silky, decadent and opulent, this blend of Merlot with a dash of Cab Franc will make you swoon.

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

Could business owners be in for more tax headaches?

There is an “air of foreboding” amongst business owners in the run-up to the Chancellor’s autumn budget, according to a legal expert who advises clients across North Wales.

Edward Nutting, an agricultural and commercial property lawyer at Lanyon Bowdler in Conwy, says inheritance tax is still one of the biggest issues being raised by farming clients – and the uncertainty is showing little sign of going away.

“For many people running a business, farm or owning land/ property, inheritance tax has always been manageable with forward planning, underpinned by certain tax reliefs. But after the 2024 budget, the safety net is getting tighter – and the upcoming autumn budget could pull it even closer,” he says.

“For years, Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief meant qualifying assets could pass down land to the next generation tax-free. The big change announced in last year’s budget was that from April 2026, only the first £1 million of qualifying farm or business property will get 100% relief. Anything above that gets 50% relief, meaning half the value will now be subject to inheritance tax.

“There are also changes to the way pensions are affected. From April 2027, any unused pension funds will be included in your estate for inheritance tax – another hit for those who’ve built up a pension pot but never needed to draw on it fully.”

It is always difficult to predict the details of what may be announced in a forthcoming budget, but Edward says it’s unlikely to be good news for many.

“There is talk of the automatic uplift in Capital Gains Tax on death being scrapped and also rumours of there being a lifetime cap on Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief,” he says.

“Either of those changes would have major consequences for business owners and their families, so it’s unsurprising there is an air of foreboding amongst clients when we discuss the upcoming budget.

“What all of this uncertainty highlights is that it’s more important than ever to review ownership structures, partnership agreements, and succession plans.

“Family-run businesses have always been about long-term planning, but understanding and reviewing your tax affairs is now vital to safeguarding the future of your business.” n

More Than a School

Choosing the right school isn't about glossy promises – it's about walking through the door and knowing. This November, Rydal Penrhos invites families to do exactly that, at three key transition points that shape a child's education.

Whether you're considering Pre-School, Senior School, or Sixth Form, these November events offer real insight into school life at Rydal Penrhos – helping you to decide if it's right for your family.

Year 7 Taster Day — Thursday 13th November

Your child doesn't just tour the Senior School – they experience it. Real lessons. Subject specialists. The kind of purposeful, personal teaching that happens when class sizes are genuinely small.

Parents usually want to know three things: Will my child be happy? Will they be challenged? Will they settle well? Spending a day at Rydal Penrhos answers those questions more clearly than any prospectus could.

The day shows pastoral care in practice, how teachers strengthen core skills while encouraging independence, and allows both parents and pupils to imagine where a Rydal Penrhos education might lead.

Sixth Form Discovery Day — Tuesday 18th November

The Sixth Form years should prepare you for what comes next – not just exams, but university, careers, and adulthood. At Rydal Penrhos, that means one-to-one guidance on everything from choosing the right A-Levels to navigating UCAS, from developing effective study habits to preparing for interviews.

Prospective pupils experience this firsthand: sampling A-Level teaching, meeting the Head of Sixth Form, and talking with current pupils about their own time at the school. It's an opportunity to experience a truly success-based approach –rigorous, supportive, and focused on future readiness.

Pre-School Open Morning — Saturday 22nd November

Based in beautiful Old House at the heart of the school, the PreSchool is where learners begin. Play is purposeful. Language is rich. Outdoor discovery happens daily. Every moment is designed to build curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.

What parents notice most is the quality of attention: skilled practitioners who understand early childhood development, thoughtful routines, and the kind of warmth that helps young children flourish. For families looking for early education done well, the morning shows what that looks like in practice.

Rydal Penrhos’ November events don’t just open doors; they open a conversation. Their Admissions team will follow up to reflect on the visit with you, and to consider together how the school can best support your child to realise their potential.

Book your place at one of Rydal Penrhos’ upcoming events today. n

Mind the Gap: Why Replacing a Missing Tooth Is Worth Smiling About

Losing a tooth can happen to anyone, maybe through an accident, decay, or gum problems. And if the gap doesn’t show when you smile, it’s easy to think, “I’ll just leave it.” But according to the team at West End Dental Group in Colwyn Bay, ignoring that missing tooth could cause more problems than you might imagine.

The good news? Modern dental implants offer a long-lasting, natural-looking solution that can bring both comfort and confidence back to your smile.

Why leaving a gap isn’t harmless

A missing tooth isn’t just about looks, it can quietly change how your mouth functions over time. Once a tooth is gone, the bone underneath begins to shrink, and nearby teeth can start to drift into the empty space. This can make your bite uneven and harder to clean properly, increasing the risk of gum disease and decay.

Even the tooth near the gap can move, trying to “fill” the space on its own, which can lead to more wear and tear. Over time, these small changes can affect your jawline, smile, and even the shape of your face.

As the team at West End Dental Group explains: “Replacing a missing tooth isn’t just cosmetic, it’s an important step in protecting your overall oral health.”

The beauty of dental implants

Dental implants are widely considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They work by placing a small titanium post into the jawbone, which acts just like a natural tooth root. A beautifully crafted crown is then fitted on top, blending seamlessly with your smile.

Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn’t rely on neighbouring teeth for support, which means your healthy teeth stay untouched. Even better, the implant helps preserve bone and facial structure, keeping your smile strong and youthful for years to come.

Patients love how natural implants feel, you can bite, chew, and smile with complete confidence. And with good care, they can last for decades.

Expert care close to home

At West End Dental Group, implant dentistry is something of a speciality. Under the guidance of Clinical Director Dr. Trevor Ferguson, who has nearly three decades of experience and has placed over 15,000 implants, the team combines advanced technology with a reassuringly gentle approach.

They see patients from across North Wales who want the same high-quality treatment they might expect from elite city clinics, delivered locally, with warmth and personal care.

Smile again with confidence

Whether you’ve just lost a tooth or have been living with a gap for years, a dental implant could be the most rewarding investment you make in your smile. It’s not just about replacing what’s missing, it’s about restoring comfort, confidence, and the freedom to smile without hesitation. n

To find out more or book a consultation, visit www.westend-dental.com or call 0808 164 1003 and take the first step towards a smile that feels complete again.

The People’s Champion: Saying Goodbye to Ricky Hatton

There are certain names that echo far beyond the arenas where they made their mark. For Manchester, one of those names will always be Ricky Hatton. I grew up watching his fights – that unmistakable buzz of excitement when he walked up to the ring, the chants, the pride and the sense that he wasn’t just fighting for himself but for Manchester. Ricky embodied everything I love about my home city; humour, humility and heart. He was the lad from down the road who conquered the world but never forgot his roots. When news of his death broke, like so many Mancunians, I felt as though we’d lost a piece of the city’s soul.

Watching from afar

On the day of the funeral, I found myself in Tenerife –poignantly one of Ricky’s favourite places. It felt strangely fitting to be somewhere he loved while Manchester prepared to say goodbye. Even thousands of miles away, I could feel the emotion ripple through home. Watching the coverage, I was moved to tears. That, to me, is the quiet power of funerals – the way they connect us through shared love and loss, no matter where we are. They remind us that grief isn’t confined by geography, it travels with us.

A City’s

Farewell

Manchester turned out in force for its champion. The funeral procession was everything it should have been; dignified, deeply personal and unmistakably Ricky. The sight of his cortege, being led by his Robin Reliant and welcomed by his brass band was both stirring and symbolic – a hero’s farewell.

As a funeral director, I found myself quietly admiring the care and craftmanship behind every element. Public funerals like this are complex to arrange, blending private grief with public affection. Yet this one was handled with exceptional sensitivity by Frank Massey Funeral Directors, whose work clearly reflected the family’s wishes and the city’s love. It struck that perfect Mancunian balance – respectful, heartfelt and proud.

A Coffin That Told His Story

Ricky’s coffin was a masterpiece of meaning. Designed by his family, with guidance from the Funeral Director and created by Steve Soult Ltd, it was more than a coffin – it was a tribute. Every detail spoke of him; the craftsmanship, the symbolism and most notably, the Manchester Bee. As an emblem of unity and resilience, seeing it there felt deeply poignant. It wasn’t just a nod to his roots, it was a reflection of the spirit he embodied throughout his career.

As someone who works closely with families every day, I’m constantly reminded how the smallest details can hold the

deepest meaning. When design comes to storytelling, a coffin transforms from something that carries a person to something that honours them.

Words That Moved a City

And wow, Adam Smith’s eulogy – heartfelt, humorous and heartbreakingly honest. His words painted a portrait of Ricky that resonated with everyone who’d ever cheered him on. There was laughter, tears, warmth in the sorrow and above all, love.

As I listened, I was moved to tears. In work, I’ve seen numerous times that the right words at the right time can bring comfort and connection. A good eulogy is more than remembrance, it’s a bridge between grief and gratitude.

What his Farewell Reminded Me

Ricky Hatton’s funeral reminded me of something simple yet profound. Funerals are not just about loss. They are about life. About telling a story so vividly that, for a moment, it feels as though the person is right there with us.

This was a service that reflected a life lived with energy, humour and courage. The life of a man who made his city proud. Watching from afar, I could still feel Manchester’s heartbeat; steady, strong and full of love. As a Mancunican, a fan and a funeral director, I felt honoured to witness such a fitting farewell. This wasn’t just a city saying goodbye to a boxing legend, it was a community saying thank you. And that’s why funerals are so important. n

November's horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)

You're stepping into the month with strong emotions and even stronger intentions. You’ve got goals, and you’re not afraid to go after them – but take time to listen to those close to you, especially around the 5th. You might learn something that shifts your thinking. Midway through the month, a bit of quiet reflection does wonders. By the end, you’ll feel braver and ready to embrace something new. Keep your actions intentional and your words kind.

TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)

This month nudges you to reassess what really feels nourishing in your life – not just familiar. Breaking old patterns takes courage, but you’re ready. A relationship could reach a turning point, and honesty will be essential. Don’t shy away from the big conversations. Things might feel a bit shaky at home mid-month, so give yourself time. By the final week, new ideas will start to take shape. Your self-respect will be your greatest strength.

GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)

You may feel stretched in several directions at once. Take a breather. A situation that’s been swept aside may surface again – deal with it gently. If your body’s sending signals, don’t ignore them. Mid-month could bring some confusion in conversations, so double-check the fine print and pause before pressing send. You’ll spot an exciting opportunity later this month – but don’t rush in. Move with interest, not impatience.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)

Emotions run deep this month, and you’ll feel them more than most. You might be longing to step back from everyday demands – and that’s okay. Some friendships or old hopes no longer fit; let them go gently. Mid-November, someone may be too stubborn to compromise, but clarity will arrive later. Health-wise, small changes stick, and you’ll start feeling more hopeful as the month draws to a close.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)

Take a breather – you’ve earned it. The first half of the month calls for stillness, and even silence, so you can hear yourself think. Around the 14th, a few things may get stuck or stall. Rather than forcing progress, let things unfold in their own time. By the end of the month, your creativity returns with a bang, and you’ll feel re-energised and inspired once more.

VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)

You’re craving answers, but the first part of the month may offer more questions instead. Travel or learning experiences could spark a new way of thinking. You’ve been focused on duty for so long – don’t forget what brings you joy. Hold off on major decisions mid-month and trust your inner knowledge. As November ends, a sense of direction returns, clearer than ever.

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)

Balance is your buzzword, and this month asks you to apply it to your emotional life too. Look closely at who and what you’re giving your time to. Mid-November might bring a few crossed wires – slow down and really listen. A fresh opportunity to build trust and security will arrive before the month is out. You’re moving towards decisions that serve your happiness – not just everyone else’s.

SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)

This is a month of letting go and starting again. Relationships come into sharper focus early on – some need space, others need cutting loose. Try not to react too quickly mid-month. Take your time and choose your words with care. By the 20th, the tide turns and you’ll be ready to take your next steps. You’re wiser than before, and more grounded too – trust that you’re on the right path.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)

This month brings a quiet check-in with your health and habits. If things haven’t been going well, this is your cue to make gentle changes. Around the 11th, avoid big decisions – there’s too much noise to think clearly. But don’t worry: your energy comes back with a flourish later in the month. By then, you’ll have a clearer sense of purpose and a fire that burns bright again.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)

November gives you the opportunity to review what – and who – brings joy to your life. Are you living from duty or desire? Someone’s casual comment might bother you, but don’t take it to heart. A moment of clarity later in the month helps you reconnect with what matters most. Get ready to move forward with something that feels truly yours – your next project could be exactly what you need.

AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)

Big themes like work, direction, and reputation are up for review. Something at home or deep within might need tending before you push ahead. Around midmonth, delays may feel frustrating – use the time to reflect rather than react. The pace will pick up again soon. As November ends, you’ll feel steadier and more aligned with where you’re heading. Let past lessons guide you into a more selfassured future.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)

This month offers a mirror to your thoughts and beliefs. Something you’ve been avoiding may come into the light – and it might surprise you. Wait before jumping to conclusions mid-month, when confusion lingers. Instead, take care of yourself and rest if needed. The New Moon gives your spirit a quiet lift. As the month wraps up, you’ll feel a sense of peace returning, along with curiosity for what’s next.
