DEAR READER
Well summer has finally arrived! Here’s to a couple of months of BBQ’s, reading in the garden, building sandcastles on the beach, camping and maybe even attending a festival or two. At least, we can hope! But I have every confidence in the great Welsh weather…
After all, when the weather is on our side there is no better place in the world than North Wales. From lakes and mountains to beaches and beautiful countryside, we really do have it all. But whatever activity you are taking part in there is one thing that you must always consider – and that’s staying safe.
We have a great article on page 25 about how to keep safe if you’re planning on climbing a mountain or two this summer. So read on and take note, because it could just save a life.
But it’s not just mountains that you need to be aware of. Lakes and reservoirs present their own dangers, and it’s absolutely vital to
do your research and be prepared before you take a swim.
And while on the beach, you need to look out for both jellyfish and weever fish – neither of which you want to come too close to! And please, please plan for the tides – there has been more than enough vehicles lost to the sea on Black Rock Sands already this year…
Wishing you a very sunny (and safe!) summer,
Kate Hamilton Editor

Talacre is an impressive sandy beach located near Prestatyn. It is home to the Grade II listed Point of Ayr Lighthouse that dates back to 1776, but which was decommissioned in 1884. Beddgelert Exploring
Bethany Birch visits Beddgelert, and discovers a picturesque village built around a legend…
Known for the legendary tale of Gelert’s grave, the picturesque village of Beddgelert is steeped in mystical folklore that continues to draw visitors from near and far. Yet this picturesque stone-built village offers far more than just one legend – it is a place of charm, history and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination in North Wales.
Close to the scenic Aberglaslyn Pass to the south, Nant Gwynant to the east, and Snowdon to the north, Beddgelert is perfectly positioned for those looking to explore some of Snowdonia’s most iconic landscapes. Whether you’re planning a full week of adventure or simply a peaceful weekend retreat, the village provides an ideal base for anyone seeking fresh air, fantastic views, and a sense of calm.
At its heart, Beddgelert feels like a postcard come to life. Its stone cottages, flower-lined bridges and clear-flowing river create a timeless setting that is hard to forget. Strolling through the village, you’ll find inviting cafés, independent shops and a selection of cosy B&Bs and hotels that make the most of the area’s tranquil atmosphere. Whether you're warming up with a pot of tea in a snug corner after a day of hiking, or enjoying an ice cream by the riverside on a sunny afternoon, the village has a way of making you slow down and take it all in.
The legend of Gelert is still very much part of the village’s

mistakenly killed his faithful hound Gelert, thinking the dog had harmed his child. In truth, Gelert had defended the child from a wolf. Overcome with grief, the prince is said to have buried the dog here – hence the name Beddgelert, which means “Gelert’s grave.” Today, visitors can follow a short riverside walk to the supposed site of the grave, where a simple monument tells the story in both Welsh and English. Whether or not you believe the tale, the walk itself is worth doing for the scenery alone.
But the legend is only one chapter in Beddgelert’s long history. The area has been inhabited for centuries, and you can still see signs of its past in the remnants of copper mines nearby, as well as in the surrounding landscape shaped by generations of farming and rural life. History lovers might also enjoy a visit to nearby Sygun Copper Mine, where you can explore winding tunnels and learn about life underground in Victorian times.
Nature is ever-present here, with an array of walks and trails suited to all abilities. The Aberglaslyn Pass, just a short distance from the village, is a particular highlight. This dramatic gorge offers a walking route along the banks of the Glaslyn River, weaving through ancient woodland and rocky outcrops. It’s a firm favourite with both photographers and nature lovers.
Alternatively, for a gentler stroll, there are circular routes through the valley and beyond, often with Snowdonia’s peaks providing a striking backdrop. These peaceful paths are perfect for a slower pace, be sure to pack a picnic and enjoy an afternoon surrounded by nature, with the sounds of the river and birdsong for company.
For those seeking something more challenging, Beddgelert provides access to the quieter southern approaches of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), including the Rhyd Ddu and Snowdon Ranger paths. These offer a more peaceful route to the summit

compared to the often busier Llanberis or Pyg tracks, and reward climbers with sweeping views across the national park.
Despite its popularity, Beddgelert has managed to retain its sense of peace and community. It’s the kind of place where conversations are had over garden walls and visitors are made to feel welcome the moment they arrive. Many return year after year, drawn not only by the beauty of the place but by the atmosphere it fosters.
In spring and summer, the village comes alive with colour as flowers spill from baskets and the surrounding hills glow with greens and purples. July is a wonderful time to visit, with the village bustling, nature in full bloom and (hopefully) the weather on your side for a walk and picnic! Then autumn arrives, and this season brings a different magic, as the woodlands shift to amber and gold, while winter wraps the valley in mist and frost, making it a haven for those who love a crisp countryside escape.
If you’re planning a trip to North Wales in 2025, make sure Beddgelert is firmly on your list. Whether you come for the legend, the landscapes or simply the pleasure of wandering through a beautiful village with a coffee in hand, you’ll find something here that lingers long after you’ve gone. In every direction, there’s a view to stop you in your tracks, and in every season, a reason to return. n

Learn to dive right here in North Wales with Southsea Scuba…
Southsea Scuba was set up in 2018 by husband and wife instructor team Jon and Amanda, starting off in a very small unit which no one could find!
Initially only offering PADI courses and drysuit repairs, business soon picked up and Jon and Amanda partnered up with their first supplier, Ocean Reef. In January 2020 Jon went to Bedford for a few days to do the Ocean Reef Service Technician Course, but a few days later we went into the first dreaded lockdown… However, selling Ocean Reef Full Face Masks and offering servicing kept Southsea Scuba going through Covid and they came out the other side bigger and stronger.
Towards the end of the lockdowns they moved to larger premises at Park in the Past in Hope, Flintshire. By this time they had signed up with Beaver Sports and SEAC to increase their sales range, and shortly after they added Mares, Fourth Element, Shearwater, Miflex Hoses and Kubi to their list of suppliers.
In early 2023 the couple signed up with SSI (Scuba Schools International) to also offer their courses which they have found to be a great benefit due to their fantastic materials and flexible approach to teaching.
But Jon and Amanda didn’t stop there, in September 2023 they moved to their current unit in Rhostyllen, Wrexham, an impressive 1500 square foot (139 square metre) industrial unit which gave them room to expand their services even further – a larger workshop for drysuit repairs, a separate workshop for Regulator/BCD/Computer servicing, a well stocked shop, large compressor, multimedia classroom and a large equipment store and cleaning area.
Continuing their expansion they then added more suppliers – Santi Drysuits, SUEX DPV’s, TUSA, Waterproof, Light and Motion, Metalsub, Tovatec, Aquatec, MGE and many more.
2025 has been no different as Jon and Amanda continue to increase their services – their latest offering is from Aquatek Drysuits – made to measure, high quality drysuits made locally in Wales at a very competitive price.
This month Jon is off on another course which will expand the number and type of courses Southsea Scuba offer. Not only have they increased the products that they offer over the years, but they have also brought on board new instructors with their own skills and passions. Whereas Jon is more interested in wrecks, Lukas, Emma and Hannah are more interested in in the ecology side of diving. Lukas and Emma are also very skilled Freediving instructors and will regularly ditch their scuba gear in favour of some freediving fins – Lukas is also a very talented underwater photographer and also an excellent Mermaid instructor.
It’s been a lot of hard work over the last seven years but it has been worth it in the end to make Southsea Scuba the biggest dive centre in North Wales. n

Tall Order
The Eryri National Park, and Yr Wyddfa itself, is one of the most powerful draws of North Wales. But with great power comes great responsibility and so, if you are venturing into the mountains, please make sure that you are fully prepared…
If you intend heading onto the high ground of North Wales, and particularly the summits of Eryri, then it’s down to you and your group to be fully prepared and ready – and not to expect others to come and bail you out if things go slightly awry.
Unfortunately in this modern age of orienteering the mobile phone has replaced the map and compass in many instances, and so its no wonder that people tend to get into difficulty in the Welsh mountains.
The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team is one of the busiest in the UK, with around 200 incidents to attend to each year, and most of its time is spent helping walkers on Yr Wyddfa. Likewise the Ogwen Mountain Rescue Team responds to about 120 call outs each year. The members of both associations are on stand-by 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year – giving their time for free to assist fellow users of the great outdoors who find themselves in trouble.
And yet with careful planning, sensible behaviour and good mountain skills you can move safely in our high places and return refreshed from your day out and not wishing you had never set off. You can also help ease the burden on our mountain rescue teams!
There is an old saying among walkers that goes: ‘Remember, the summit is only half way. Coming down can be more difficult’.
And so, with that in mind, let’s look at a few ideas for staying safe in the hills and mountains of North Wales. Note, however, that in full winter conditions the summits are best left to the experienced mountaineer and mountain walker who is well equipped with ice axe and crampons.
1 – Plan your route carefully and make sure it is well within the capabilities of the weakest member of your party.
2 – Get an up-to-date weather forecast and don’t be afraid to change to an easier route or abandon your walk altogether if it seems unsuitable. Remember winds blow much stronger as you gain height, rain falls heavier and temperatures drop.
3 – Don’t be afraid of turning back if the weather deteriorates or a member of the party shows signs of fatigue or illness. ‘Better a postponement than a post-mortem’ as the late guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright wrote.
4 – Have the appropriate map and a compass and know how to read the first and use the second. GPS units are very useful but batteries can run out (carry spares) and nothing beats being able to navigate with map and compass. Remember mist and rain can be very disorientating so extra careful route finding is needed if caught in these conditions.
5 – Don’t rely on mobile phones – batteries run down and there may be no signal in the area where you are.
6 – Wear good boots and socks and the appropriate warm clothing. Carry a hat and gloves and waterproof coat and trousers (preferably Gore-tex material). Use a layering system starting with a wick away base layer and ending with a wind and waterproof outer layer. You can take layers off and put them on as the day progresses and you get hotter and colder. Other items worth taking along are a head torch, paper and pen and some spare clothing.
7 – Carry food and some form of instant energy bars (Mars bars and snickers will do at a push). And even though water is heavy always make sure you are carrying enough.
8 – If the sun is shining (and is sometimes does even in North Wales) carry sun cream and wear a sun hat. Sun and heat stroke can be just as deadly as hypothermia.
9 – Carry a decent first aid kit and a plastic survival bag with the party and keep an eye on each other. Hypothermia can creep up on the unwary and is a killer. Simple things like blisters on toes can be agonising and debilitating so know how to deal with them and act sooner rather than later.
10 - Act sensibly and walk carefully being especially cautious on rocky ground and scree. Treat steep slopes and drops with respect and avoid them if possible. The majority of mountain rescue call outs are to slips, falls and tumbles.
11 – Always let someone know where you are going and your intended route as well as what time they should expect you back. Leaving a route card or route outline is a good idea but always remember to let the person you have trusted with the details know you are back safely. Numerous mountain rescue call outs have been initiated because someone forgot to do this. Route cards and outlines should include a good outline of the route with grid references for the key points and timings too – and remember to stick to it and not change it once you are out.
12 – To summarise – Be sensible, take care, do nothing rashly
and remember your enemies names are Mr Cold, Mr Wet and Mr Hungry. Avoid these and things will go much more smoothly so stay warm, dry and keep well fed.
What to do if the worst happens
So you’ve taken all the precautions and carried all the right gear but things have gone dreadfully wrong. What should you do?
1 – Make a quick assessment of the situation and make sure that not only is the casualty in a safe position but all members of the party are too.
2 – Keep everyone calm. There will often be other walkers around who will offer to help but even if there isn’t, nothing is to be gained by panicking.
3 – Be realistic. If someone has just sat down because they are tired and hungry then there is no need to call out mountain rescue, is there?
4 – Make the casualty as comfortable as you can by adding extra clothing or covering them with it. If you can get them in a survival bag do so and see if someone can get in with them to add extra body warmth. The most important thing is to keep the casualty warm and calm. Depending on the nature of the injury it may or may not be possible to administer first aid if you know how to. Remember, if injuries are to the neck or back it is best not to move the casualty until professional help arrives.
How to call Mountain Rescue
You can contact Mountain Rescue through the police by calling 999, and asking first for the Police and then for Mountain Rescue. Mountain Rescue teams work extensively with Air Ambulance, HM Coastguard and their helicopters and search and rescue dog associations so you will be in good hands.
Once you have decided to contact Mountain Rescue have as much detail as possible ready for when you get put through.
Try and have as many of the following facts ready:
J Location of the casualty with a grid reference if known
J Condition of the casualty and assessment of injury
J Number of others in the party and gear being carried
J How the accident occurred
J Mobile phone numbers you can be contacted on n

BMC volunteers have been using sheep fleeces to make sustainable footpaths below Yr Wyddfa. The question is, why?
Fourteen BMC volunteers worked hard during the spring to create a footpath in Cwm Llan on the south-eastern flanks of Yr Wyddfa using sheep fleeces on the latest Get Stuck In event in Eryri. These events are funded by the BMC's Access & Conservation Trust as part of the Mend Our Mountains campaign.
"Fleeces are used to build paths through boggy areas where stones would just sink into the mud,” explains BMC Hill Walking Rep and Get Stuck In creator, Steve Charles. “Our 14 volunteers worked with the National Trust Footpath Team in Eryri on a very successful event – over the two days there was a total of 60m of path built: 30m using fleeces (covered with stones) and also 30m just using stone."
Work-wise, fleece is easier in a way than stone-pitching or stepping stones because it’s a lighter material and a less technical method that takes less time, skill and experience. But in other ways, it’s harder than building a path with stone because without a digger or a large group of people like the BMC volunteers, it’s quite a time-consuming task because of the sheer amount of material that needs to be dug out and then filled back in.
sheep wool fleece technique in paths was used by the Romans,” said Ifan Parry, National Trust Cymru Area Ranger with the Footpath Team in Eryri. “Now, we tend to use this technique in wet boggy ground through peatland. The wool acts like a membrane to separate the path stone from the peat so it doesn’t sink. It’s a more eco-friendly replacement to using plastic membrane. Once the wool is in and sealed, the peat is an anoxic environment so it won't rot, it will stay intact, acting like a barrier between the path and the peat. We try not to disrupt the peatland, so the wool allows water to flow through it underneath the path, preventing the surrounding peatland from drying out."
During 2023 and 2024, BMC Get Stuck In volunteers clocked up almost 500 man-hours of work in Eryri. They repaired over 520m of footpath, laid 187 stepping stones across marshy ground, reprofiled 80m of bare, eroded peat hags and cleared five helicopter bags full of plastic tree guards.
“We need to make our mountain footpaths more resilient to increased rainfall and increased use,” concludes Steve. “Our mountains need to be nurtured, because if we don't do anything, the uplands will be in a much poorer state when we hand them over to future generations. n

Free ways to make summer memories
From rock pooling on the coast to woodland walks and castle explorations, there are plenty of activities to keep both bigs and littles entertained this summer. Bethany Birch finds out more…
Summer holidays in North Wales offer endless opportunities to enjoy nature and create lasting memories with family and friends – all without spending a penny.
Beach Adventures and Coastal Fun
North Wales’ stunning coastline is a playground for all ages. Head to your closest beach and spend the day rock pooling in tidal pools, hunting for crabs, or building sand castles and protective moats. For the more adventurous, bring your bodyboard or paddleboard to catch the waves, or simply race across the sand dunes for a bit of friendly competition. Picnics by the shore, beach bonfires (where permitted), and beach hopping to explore different coves and bays offer great ways to enjoy the outdoors together.
Woodlands, Gardens, and Playgrounds
Explore the region’s beautiful free green spaces such as the expansive woodlands at Coed y Brenin Forest Park or the tranquil Bodnant Gardens free sections, perfect for easy family walks and spotting local wildlife. Playgrounds like West Shore Playground, Llandudno and Rhyl’s Promenade Park provide safe, fun spots for children to burn off energy, while picnic areas dotted across the region make it easy to stop for a rest and a snack amidst nature.
Castles and Heritage Sites
While many castles charge entry fees, wandering the grounds and town walls of historic places like Conwy and Caernarfon is completely free. Marvel at these medieval fortifications, explore the quaint castle towns, and soak in stunning views of the surrounding landscape. These iconic landmarks offer plenty of space for kids to run around and ignite imaginations steeped in history.
Museums and Art Galleries
Several local museums welcome visitors free of charge and offer fascinating insights into North Wales’ rich culture and history. STORIEL35 in Bangor and Oriel Môn on Anglesey showcase exhibitions suitable for all ages. Conwy Museum is another gem where families can explore maritime history and local stories without an entry fee, making it a perfect rainy day option.
Lighthouses and Coastal Walks
While visiting inside lighthouses often requires a ticket, the dramatic coastal walks around places like the Trwyn Du Lighthouse near Penmon, Anglesey provide spectacular views of the sea and cliffs. South Stack and Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse are two notable sightseeing spots located on Anglesey that are definitely worth a visit! These areas are perfect for beach combing, spotting seabirds, and enjoying peaceful moments away from the crowds.
Explore Nature’s Playgrounds
The Alice in Wonderland Trail, Llandudno
One of the most enchanting free activities this summer is the Alice in Wonderland Trail in Llandudno. This self-guided walking route celebrates Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, through 34 sculptures of characters like the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts. Follow bronze rabbit footprints embedded in the pavement as you stroll through the town’s gardens and promenades.
Beyond the coast, North Wales boasts countless scenic spots ideal for picnics, nature crafts, and wildlife watching. Collect pebbles, shells, and driftwood to create your own seaside art or painted rocks to leave as surprises for others to find. Or why not try your hand at fishing or crabbing from piers or the shoreline!
Tips for Free Summer Fun
Pack a picnic, bring plenty of water, and don’t forget sun protection to make the most of your day trips. Bring some enthusiasm and a good dose of imagination and you’re well on your way to a memorable day out in this beautiful region of the world.

WELSH PROGRAMME TO TACKLE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE WINS AWARDS
Arwain DGC’s pioneering work to reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock and the environment in Wales was recognised last month, when the programme won two prestigious awards.
The Antibiotic Guardian 2024/25 Shared Learning & Awards champions organisations and individuals who have ‘demonstrated achievements in tackling antimicrobial resistance at a local, regional, or national level.’
Arwain DGC (Defnydd Gwrthficrobaidd Cyfrifol / Responsible Antimicrobial Use) is a Welsh Government-funded programme led by Mentera, dedicated to preventing antibiotic resistance in animals and the environment.
Working with farmers, veterinarians, researchers, and industry experts, Arwain DGC implements a comprehensive, coordinated approach to reducing AMR. Activities include the promotion of antimicrobial stewardship, technological innovation, antimicrobial use monitoring, AMR surveillance, and knowledge exchange.
Arwain DGC was named overall winner in two categories ‘Animal Health, Agriculture & Food Supply’ and ‘Innovation and Technology’, and was shortlisted in the ‘Public Engagement’ category.
The programme’s work in creating a coordinated approach to AMR for livestock and the environment in Wales earned Arwain DGC its award in the ‘Animal Health, Agriculture & Food Supply’ category.
The ‘Innovation and Technology’ category award recognised Arwain’s work with project partner Welsh Lamb and Beef Producers to produce an antimicrobial use (AMU) calculator, which has yielded vital data on antibiotic use on farms in Wales.
While the nomination in the ‘Public Engagement’ category was for Arwain’s participation in the ‘One Wales, One Health’ campaign – a partnership between Public Health
Wales, Arwain DGC, and primary and secondary care organisations throughout Wales
Dewi Hughes, Mentera Animal Health Services Manager and Arwain DGC programme manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted and incredibly proud that Arwain DGC’s work has been recognised alongside such strong entries from both the animal and human health fields. This recognition demonstrates how integral reducing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is for One Health.
“These awards reflect the commitment and skill of Arwain DGC’s programme partners across the agricultural industry and academia and demonstrate the work they have undertaken to challenge AMR in livestock and the environment in Wales. We would like to thank all the farmers and vets who are involved in Arwain DGC, without whom we wouldn’t be able to do what we do." n
AMR is classed as a global ‘One Health” challenge, and there are calls for urgent multisectoral action. AMR has been described by The World Health Organisation as an issue where “without urgent action, we are heading for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries can once again kill.”
Launched in 2014, the One Health Antibiotic Guardian Campaign started as an online action-based pledge system to increase engagement in tackling AMR through improving knowledge and changing behaviour across human and animal health. Previous award winners have included UK and multinational companies and organisations.
Arwain DGC won two Antibiotic Guardian Awards

LAW FIRM CONNECTING WITH CLIENTS THROUGH THE WELSH LANGUAGE
Speaking to someone in your native tongue often creates a natural connection – which can be particularly powerful during difficult times. As a law firm with a growing client base across North Wales, Lanyon Bowdler is increasing the number of Welsh speakers working from its Conwy office.
Two of the firm’s trainee solicitors, Alys Jones and Mia Williams, both speak Welsh as their first language, which is greatly appreciated by their Welsh-speaking clients.
Alys and Mia have recorded an episode of Lanyon Bowdler’s Legal Lounge podcast, (available in Welsh and English) when they chat with the firm’s managing partner, Brian Evans, about their route into law. Mia studied law at Liverpool University, completing her Legal Practice Course, before joining Lanyon Bowdler as a trainee solicitor in September 2023.
“I always knew I wanted to come back to North Wales after university, and while researching the various local law firms I quickly discovered Lanyon Bowdler’s reputation for their training which really made the firm stand out,” she says.
“Welsh is the first language of a lot of people in the area, and I know for example some members of my family would struggle to speak English to someone, so having lawyers who can communicate with clients in Welsh is really helpful. If they are going through a difficult time in their life, being able to speak with someone in their own language is very important.”
Alys is currently in the first year of her training contract, and she echoes Mia’s view that being able to speak with clients in their first language is hugely beneficial.
“I’m involved with something new every day, and learning something new every day – it’s been a great learning experience,” Alys explains.
“From my own experience, when I know that somebody can speak Welsh I already feel comfortable. When you speak Welsh with a stranger you feel that instant relationship being built, which is very much the case when making a connection with a client.”
For aspiring lawyers in North Wales, the message from Alys and Mia is clear: you don’t have to move to a big city to find a firm capable of providing the training and experience you need to further your career.
“Lanyon Bowdler is large enough to give you the same kind of training that you would get in a city firm,” Alys says. “The Conwy office opened in 2019 – it’s expanded every year and will continue to grow, meaning there will be more opportunities in the future as well.” n

A highlight of the school calendar, the weekend invites alumni, families and friends to return to campus for two days of celebration, connection and community. St David’s College Year 11 Prom proves great success
The St David’s College Year 11 Prom took place on a beautiful summer’s evening and what a night it was. Held in celebration of all the hard work and achievements of the students after a demanding exam season, the evening was filled with unforgettable memories. Festivities began with a stylish drinks reception in the Grade I listed Minstrel Hall at the school. Pupils arrived dressed in stunning gowns and sharp suits. Proud parents gathered to capture the moment, snapping photos on the steps and the front lawn. The celebration then moved to the Deganwy Quay Hotel, where students enjoyed a delicious three-course meal specially selected by the year group. The venue looked spectacular thanks to the dedication of volunteers, including many parents, who spent hours transforming the room into a magical setting. After dinner, the DJ kept the dance floor buzzing well into the night. www.stdavidscollege.co.uk

More than a School
Time. It’s the one thing today’s young people seem to have less and less of – time to think, to breathe, to grow at their own pace. But at Rydal Penrhos, North Wales’ leading coeducational independent school, time is treated differently.
At Rydal Penrhos, time is not something to battle with, but something given back to pupils: time to ask questions, to reflect, and to flourish on their own terms.
In a world where education too often feels rushed, rigid and impersonal, Rydal Penrhos offers something rare – and on Saturday 4th October 2025, families are invited to experience it for themselves at the school’s annual Open Day.
Where Every Pupil is Known and Valued
Step into the classrooms at Rydal Penrhos and you’ll notice it immediately: a sense of calm, and an atmosphere of attentiveness. Small class sizes allow teachers to truly know their pupils — to recognise when to stretch, when to support, and when to simply listen. A truly human approach to education.
Pupils benefit from expert, experienced teachers and a culture of genuine care. Every child receives a school-issued iPad, providing constant access to digital resources and direct communication with teachers via Microsoft Teams. Whether revising for exams or seeking extra clarity, help is always close at hand. Regular subject clinics at lunchtime and after school ensure pupils can access support exactly when they need it.
This culture of attentiveness runs through everything. It leads not only to outstanding GCSE and A-Level results, but to confidence, character, and self-belief.

Facilities are exceptional – from a new, state-of-the-art Astro Turf pitch to inspiring science labs and music suites. But it’s the people who bring the school to life. Teachers here are mentors, motivators and role models.
Beyond the classroom, opportunity continues. From international trips and sports tours to house competitions and school productions, life at Rydal Penrhos is full, vibrant and varied. These experiences are not just extras – they’re central to helping young people develop resilience, independence, and joy in learning.

Time, trust, and teeth: the case for private dental membership at West End Dental
By the time we’ve reached adulthood, most of us have developed some kind of relationship with dentistry – be it routine, reluctant, or somewhere between a mild phobia and a recurring New Year’s resolution. Yet there’s a growing number of people who are rethinking their approach to dentistry entirely.
They’re not just booking appointments. They’re becoming members. West End Dental has turned routine oral healthcare into something far more thoughtful – and frankly, more civilised.
Beyond Check-Ups: The Rise of Preventative Membership
Private dental membership might sound like a modern luxury, but at its core, it’s an old-fashioned idea: look after something carefully, and it’s less likely to fall apart. At West End Dental, this idea is formalised into membership plans that prioritise prevention over reaction for oral healthcare. Regular examinations, thorough hygiene appointments, and proactive care form the foundation – not just for healthy teeth, but for a calmer life. There’s nothing quite like knowing you’ll be seen promptly should something go wrong, without pleading for an emergency slot. It’s dentistry, but with forward planning. Rather than dreading appointments, members begin to see them as part of their routine – like a good haircut or a reliable car service.
A Clinic Where the Waiting Room Isn’t the Highlight
Step into any of West End Dental’s locations – Colwyn Bay, Llangefni, Porthmadog, Prestatyn – and you’re greeted not with antiseptic glare or chipped clipboards, but with soft lighting, calm tones, and compassionate staff. This isn’t theatre. It’s simply a place designed with the patient in mind. Everything, from routine fillings to complex full-mouth rehabilitation, happens within a West End Dental clinic. No referrals to distant specialists. No labyrinthine appointment systems. Just a team of highly trained clinicians, all working seamlessly together supported by dedicated customer care and nursing staff. And for those who recoil at the thought of a dental drill? West End Dental has consultant anaesthetists available to provide conscious sedation, ensuring the highest levels of safety and comfort for nervous patients.
The Hidden Bonus: A Private
GP
It’s one of those benefits you don’t know you need – until suddenly, you do. As part of their membership, West End Dental patients also gain access to an online private GP service with appointments available 24/7. This benefit is included entirely free of charge. Discreet and timely, it’s a thoughtful
addition to maximise not just your oral health, but your whole health.
Not One Plan, But Many
Crucially, West End Dental recognises that not everyone wants or needs the same thing. The person with a gleaming set of veneers has different needs than the one keeping a cautious eye on an old bridge. And the family managing packed diaries isn’t looking for the same care schedule as a retiree investing in their smile. That’s why the membership options are tailored. Each plan comes with built-in access to care, priority appointments, and flexibility with monthly payments. Not boutique for boutique’s sake – but thoughtful, because that’s how good service works.
Why Private, and Why Now?
Let’s be honest: no one grows up dreaming of their dental future. But somewhere between lost retainers and postpandemic delays, it’s become clear that many dental care options aren’t nimble enough to meet modern demands. Private care offers something increasingly rare: time. Time with a clinician who isn’t under pressure to rush. Time to ask questions. Time to be heard. But at West End Dental, it’s not just time – it’s also trust. The kind built quietly, year after year, between patient and practitioner. No drama. No fanfare. Just people doing their jobs extremely well.
In Conclusion: A Smile Worth Investing In
For those who still see dentistry as a reactive chore, the idea of a dental membership might seem excessive. But for a growing number of patients across North Wales, it has become a natural part of looking after themselves.
At West End Dental, the difference isn’t just in the technology, the facilities, or the credentials. It’s in the feeling you get when you walk in and realise – this place is prepared. For your next consultation. For your next emergency. For whatever happens next. And in a world full of uncertainty, that sort of reassurance is worth smiling about. n
Beginners Guide to a 5km Run
LACE UP AND BECOME MY NEW RUNNING
BUDDY!
Due to the repetitive motion of running, we need to find ways to make the running journey enjoyable, sustainable and injury free. This applies to both new runners and seasoned runners.
Here are tips to incorporate into your weekly running training:
J Dynamic Warm-Up
This is so important to avoid starting your run feeling stiff and immobile. It takes just a few minutes before your run to help improve your performance and help prevent injuries. A good warm up increases your blood flow, mobilises joints and activates key muscles.
J Incorporate mobility into your routine
We need to supplement our running with stretching and mobility exercises to ensure our joints aren’t stiff and we lose range of motion. We need to consider the range of motion in our ankles, hips, spine and shoulders.
J Include Strength Training in your weekly routine
When you run, your calf muscles and quads absorb more than 5-8 times your body weight. If your muscles aren’t strong enough to handle the impact of these forces, your bones and joints absorb the stress. This increases the risk of injury. You need to build a strong frame to deal with the forces. Strength training improves your running efficiency, making it feel effortless.
J Build gradually
Building your aerobic fitness and strength is a gradual process and a long-term journey. Doing too much too soon could result in injury or fatigue. Work to your current fitness
level. Increase the volume and intensity gradually.
J Vary the terrain you run on
Find different surfaces to run on. Hard surfaces, like pavements and treadmills, put a lot of stress on the joints and bones. Trail running will be less impact and enforces the body to engage stabiliser muscles, improving balance, agility and overall leg strength.
J Recovery
Nothing new here… focus on your hydration, home cooking, avoid ultra-processed food and aiming for 7-8 hours sleep every night. Include active recovery with some stretching, yoga, mobility routines or using the foam roller, theragun or even a sports massage.
Scan the QR code to get started with a 6-week beginners running program. If you are already running and need a strength plan to work alongside your running schedule get in touch.
The strength workouts will be:
J Personalised and based on your ability.
J Structured around your available equipment. No need to be in a gym.
J Designed to improve your running efficiency, performance and prevent injury. n

A smarter way to mow
Mowing the lawn isn’t exactly the most exciting job in the world, so having a robot lawn mower do it for you makes life easier and less stressful. But if you’ve watched the latest Wallace and Gromit special, you might be a little worried about letting a mower loose on your garden. But the X3 Series has Segway Navimow’s self-developed technology that ensures it maps and mows precisely and without going off-piste. To navigate large spaces, the Segway Navimow X3 Series uses an advanced 3D camera and AI-assisted mapping to efficiently trim your lawn. Its mapping, coverage and location technologies help the mower to identify and navigate the space, including tricky areas like bad signal spots, trees and pathways. Its wide-angle camera also extends the mower’s view and helps it to avoid obstacles. These are now in stock at Peter Lucas Power Tools. www.peterlucaspowertools.co.uk

Law firm looking forward to major tennis event coming to
North Wales
A North Wales law firm is hoping for “game, set and match” at a tennis tournament which is coming to Wales for the first time later this year. The Lexus Wrexham Open, part of the ITF World Tennis Tour, is taking place in October, with Conwy and Oswestry-based Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors one of the event sponsors. As well as some of the best women’s tennis players in the world battling it out on the court, a range of fringe events will also be held during the week, starting with the sponsors and players welcome party on Monday 20th October. Edward Nutting, of Lanyon Bowdler, said the firm was pleased to be supporting the event at its new home in Wrexham. “We have sponsored the W100 tennis tournament in Shrewsbury for the past few years, and it made perfect sense to continue our support as it moves to Wrexham,” he said. “Lanyon Bowdler’s head office is in Shrewsbury and we are proud of our growing team in North Wales operating from our Conwy office, along with our colleagues in Oswestry, so we look forward to meeting plenty of our clients old and new during the week. “I think the fact that this tournament – one of the biggest events in women’s tennis in the UK – is coming to Wrexham just shows how vibrant North Wales is at the moment, and we are excited to be part of it.”

Hafren Furnishers celebrates milestone birthday
Hafren Furnishers, the largest independent furniture retailer in Wales, is celebrating 60 years of trading this month. The business evolved in 1965 when milk man Mike Morgan spotted a gap in the market while working his milk round in the Llanidloes and Mid Wales area. He began to offer his customers the chance to purchase small pieces of furniture direct from his milk float. Hence the business concept of Hafren Furnishers was born and has flourished ever since. Today the business is run by their son Tim Morgan, with an experienced knowledgeable team behind him. Hafren Furnishers proudly showcase the very latest furniture collections for the home and home office. The original Llanidloes site continues to operate as the flagship store. Considerable expansion and modernisation has been undertaken to offer its customers the ultimate experience. To mark their impressive 60th year, a Summer Sale will run from 21st July (to coincide with the Royal Welsh Show) until the end of August. Exclusive savings and offers will be available across all leading furniture brands storewide across both stores and online. www.hafrenfurnishers.co.uk
According to their National Retirement Forecast, 39% of people aged 22–65 are on track for a retirement income below the minimum standard – less than £14,800 for individuals or £23,100 for couples. In contrast, a moderate retirement requires £32,200 and £44,400 respectively. Additionally, 27% anticipate working longer than desired, and 15% believe they will never be able to retire. Three groups face the greatest risk:
J Generation Z: Competing financial priorities hinder savings. Among people in their 20s, 25% prioritise emergency savings and 13% cannot save at all. Over 40% risk retirement poverty, with nearly 25% only able to afford a basic lifestyle.
J Low to middle earners: Especially those in their 30s earning £20,000 - £35,000, are often saving only the minimum through automatic enrolment, putting them at long-term risk.
J Self-employed: Largely excluded from auto-enrolment, 51% are at risk of failing to meet basic retirement needs, and 23% are not saving at all.
While it’s possible to improve outcomes with increased contributions later in life, delaying action will significantly increase the effort required to bridge the savings gap. The value of your investment and any income from it can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change.

North Wales Eye Specialist Centre offers specialist procedures
A corneal transplant replaces a damaged cornea with a healthy donor one to improve vision, relieve pain, or treat disease. It’s usually done under local anesthesia. Recovery takes time, with eye drops and check-ups needed. Most transplants are successful and can greatly improve vision and quality of life. There is a small risk of complications and rejection, but the North Wales Eye Specialist Centre aims to make the procedure, and aftercare, as smooth as possible. northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

Looking for a Sign
When someone we love dies, we often look for comfort in the chaos. Many people have reported experiencing unusual, symbolic or spiritual ‘signs’ in the days, weeks and months following a death.
Whether it is a whisper of wind in a still room, a bird behaving strangely or a sudden power cut at a meaningful moment, these events can bring comfort in the form of a message from the person you have lost. Sceptics might say they are coincidences, but for those who are grieving, they can be powerful moments of connection, reassurance and peace.
In this article, we will share some remarkable stories, including one of our own, about these signs. Signs can reflect the person’s personality, passions or favourite animal and the significance lies in what these signs mean to the person experiencing them. People have seen feathers appear where there were none before, heard songs play at the perfect moment, or even smelled familiar scents linked to someone who’s passed.
The bird at Mike Peters’ funeral
On 30 May 2025, thousands of people gathered in person and online to say farewell to Mike Peters, iconic frontman of The Alarm. The service took place at the Parish Church of St Bridget and St Cwyfan in Dyserth, with thousands of fans tuning in via livestream and crowds watching on a big screen outside.
Midway through the funeral, a bird flew into the church and calmly perched on one of Mike’s guitars. The bird, thought to be a Dipper, remained still for 30 minutes as heartfelt tributes and music filled the church. It departed just after Dafydd Iwan finished his powerful rendition of Yma o Hyd; a patriotic Welsh anthem about resilience and survival. To those watching, it provided a symbolic, soulful and entirely unforgettable presence.
The butterfly after Shawna Peter’s funeral
In December 2023, after the funeral of Tristan’s beloved grandma, Shawna Peters, something equally poignant happened. During the evening the family gathered at Number
25 Bar & Bistro in Rhos-on-Sea for a meal and to continue sharing their memories of her. While talking, a Red Admiral butterfly appeared and landed just behind the family. Anyone familiar with North Wales in December will know that it isn’t butterfly weather. And yet, there it was, delicate and determined, fluttering gently through the space.
Even more remarkable was that another Red Admiral butterfly was found resting on the dining room floor at Tristan’s home the next morning. In the heart of winter, amidst deep grief, these small visitors bring a sense of comfort that words sometimes can’t capture.
Have you experienced a Sign?
If you’ve ever experienced something unusual after someone you cared about has died; a dream, a symbol or a feeling, we’d love to hear about it. Sharing these stories helps others feel less alone and more connected in their grief. Sometimes the smallest moment can be the biggest source of comfort; and reminds us that love never really leaves. n

July horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant
ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)
Spending time with the people who matter most will do wonders for your wellbeing. Whether you’re hosting a family BBQ or catching up with mates over a cuppa, it reminds you where your heart lies. You may even reshuffle your priorities to make more room for joy. If family’s far away, build your own tribe locally. Tidying the home or ticking off domestic tasks will also bring unexpected satisfaction. Don’t be afraid to tweak a few habits for your own good.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)
You’ve got ideas by the bucketload, but it feels like no one’s really listening. A little tweak in how you put your thoughts across might make all the difference. Carve out time for your creative pursuits – they’re not just hobbies, they’re part of what makes you tick. Letting yourself have fun again will not only recharge your batteries, it’ll also deepen your bonds with those around you.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)
You’re noticing the cracks a bit more than usual. Whether it’s people letting you down, money matters dragging on, or niggles in a relationship, the weight of it all feels heavier this month. Still, don’t lose sight of the good things. A shift in focus towards something that lifts your mood – a walk, a film, a spot of music – could be just the tonic. Don’t underestimate the power of a small joy to change your whole outlook.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)
You’re craving closeness and connection – nothing superficial will do. You want your relationships to mean something, and that means opening up, even if it makes you feel vulnerable. Be careful not to cling too tightly to those you love – everyone needs room to breathe. Autumn will bring powerful chances to reinvent yourself, but right now, keep things calm and steady. As the year unfolds, your emotional truth becomes your superpower – use it wisely.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)
Stick to your goals and you'll surprise yourself with what you achieve. That said, your worth isn’t defined by how many boxes you tick. Mid-month frustrations might rattle your confidence, but shake them off. The month ends on a high with welldeserved success – and yes, you absolutely should celebrate. A little praise goes a long way, especially when you’ve earned every last bit.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)
You’re feeling a bit blocked – whether it’s writer’s block or just general life fatigue. Comparing yourself to others isn’t helping. Instead, speak your mind. You’ll find someone who sees the potential in your ideas, even if you don’t. A mid-month family gathering brings the chance to resolve disputes and tie up loose ends. And if life feels too full-on, an early morning stroll or a post-work workout could clear your head like nothing else.
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)
You’re more affected than usual by what others think – and it’s playing on your confidence. Ignore the noise and focus on your own path. If safety or finances are niggling at you, take practical steps now to feel more secure. Intimate moments with loved ones will bring comfort and clarity, especially when the world feels a bit too loud. Sometimes, all you need is one good heart by your side.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)
There’s a hunger in you this month to broaden your world – try new foods, meet new people, or learn something fascinating. The more diverse your experiences, the richer your life will feel. Embrace cultural exchanges and new faces mid-month. If you’re in a relationship, bring a bit of adventure into your usual routine – it’ll do wonders for your connection.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)
Your mind’s working overtime, always digging a little deeper, and it’s leading you to some profound realisations. Whether you’re diving into research or helping someone else through a difficult time, your insight is invaluable. A younger relative could use your guidance when it comes to financial matters. And if your thoughts feel a bit heavy, lacing up your shoes for a daily walk could do the trick.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)
You and a loved one seem to be talking in circles lately. It’s frustrating when you both want the same thing but can’t quite express it. Keep the lines of communication open – a resolution is in sight by the month’s end. Don’t skimp on sleep or skip your workouts either; your health needs a bit more love right now. If it means trimming your schedule, so be it.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)
You’re longing for closeness, but the people around you feel just out of reach. It’s tempting to retreat when things feel off, but this isn’t the time to make dramatic moves. Mid-month misunderstandings might sting, but let them settle before reacting. Clarity will come later, and with it, a chance to rebuild stronger bonds. Trust that not every connection is as fragile as it seems.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)
You feel pulled in all directions, and your own priorities keep slipping through the cracks. Legal matters, work pressures or travel plans are all crowding your mind. But don’t panic – you’re laying the groundwork for a more secure future. Late July brings a turning point, with more time and space to follow your own passions. A fresh interest or new hobby could reignite your spark.
