One of the best things about North Wales during August is that you can have an absolute blast no matter how tight your budget.
On the food front, you can enjoy barbeques on the beach, picnics in the park, and ice creams on the promenade – none of which are going to break the bank.
You can walk for miles – whether it’s along the Welsh Coast Path, up a mountain or through beautiful countryside – and, again, this is a fabulous (and free!) way to spend a summers day.
Swimming is also available, both in the sea and in the lakes. And, for younger children, in many of the paddling pools that are dotted along the coast.
You can go for a scenic drive and hunt down the most stunning of sunsets (see page 29 for more inspiration) – or sunrises if that’s more your thing!
You can spend hours exploring a new town
and seeing what bargains you can find in the local charity shops. And with all the money that you have saved by ‘thrifting’ you can maybe even treat yourself to a cup of tea and a piece of cake in a local, independent café.
And, of course, if you wanted to stay a bit longer in North Wales in order to do all of the above, then you can always go camping for a night or two. Nothing quite beats sleeping under the stars – and your wallet will thank you too!
But whether you are barbequing or bathing please remember to take all of your rubbish home with you. As the saying goes: “Take only photographs, and leave only footprints.”

Criccieth Castle stands proudly on a headland between the town’s two beaches. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th Century, the castle played a key role in Welsh-English conflicts before being taken by Edward I’s forces. Today, its ruins remain an enduring symbol of Criccieth’s past, with panoramic views stretching across Cardigan Bay. Walking through the site, it’s easy to imagine the history that unfolded within its walls, from medieval skirmishes to the quieter days of later centuries.
Our friendly local artist will guide you step by step from blank canvas to mini masterpiece. No experience required! Enjoy a fun, relaxed and creative evening of painting, with friends or on your own. Everyone is welcome.

Bethany Birch visits Betws-y-Coed, and finds a charming village shaped by water…
Where thick forest meets rushing rivers and the mountains begin to rise, Betws-y-Coed captures the wild, untamed beauty of North Wales in one vibrant village. Often described as the gateway to Eryri, this captivating spot is a favourite with walkers, nature lovers and families. It’s the perfect place to get back to basics, allow time to ease on and let the great outdoors do the talking.
Surrounded by the towering trees of Gwydir Forest and cradled by a network of rivers, including the Llugwy, Conwy and Machno, Betws-y-Coed is a village shaped by water and woodland. The soothing sound of rushing streams is a constant companion here, echoing off mossy boulders and stone bridges as you explore winding trails and wooded paths. Footpaths from the village centre lead straight into the forest, where you'll find peaceful lakes like Llyn Elsi, perfect for a picnic and a pause. The walk there is a steady climb, rewarded with views and solitude that feel a world away from the bustle of everyday life.
Betws-y-Coed is a popular base for those looking to explore more of Snowdonia’s dramatic landscapes — with mountain peaks, forested trails, and high passes just a short drive away. Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in Wales, is easily accessible, and the mountain towns of Llanberis and Beddgelert make for memorable day trips. For those keen to see the region from a new perspective, helicopter tours also operate locally,

jagged mountain ridges of Snowdonia. It’s a chance to take in the scale and splendour of the landscape in a way few experiences allow.
Closer to home, the scenery remains just as spectacular. One of the most visited natural attractions near the village is Swallow Falls, a tumbling, multi-tiered waterfall surrounded by trees and reached via a short woodland walk or a small fee viewpoint. The cascades are especially dramatic after rainfall, and nearby picnic benches make it easy to linger and soak in the atmosphere. There’s also the Fairy Glen — a magical, mosscovered river gorge just outside the village that feels lifted from the pages of a storybook.
Betws-y-Coed itself is small but full of charm, with stone-built cottages, art galleries, outdoor shops, and cosy cafés lining the main street. There’s a strong sense of place here, with local produce, handmade crafts, and friendly conversation never in short supply. Traditional pubs and independent restaurants serve hearty Welsh fare, ideal after a day of walking or exploring. And when the weather turns, there are few things more comforting than ducking into a local inn for a cask ale or something warm and hearty beside the fire.
The village’s history adds another layer to its appeal. Its name translates from Welsh as “prayer house in the wood,” a nod to its 6th Century origins. Reminders of its past are easy to spot, from the graceful Pont-y-Pair Bridge, a 15th Century stone arch that spans the fast-moving river, to Thomas Telford’s cast-iron Waterloo Bridge, still in use over two centuries after it was built. A stroll around the village reveals Victorian churches, slate-roofed homes, and hidden lanes that speak of lives lived at a slower, simpler pace.
Families will enjoy a stop at the Conwy Valley Railway Museum, where miniature trains and model railways delight children and spark nostalgia in adults. The full-size station still connects the village to the North Wales coast via one of Britain’s most scenic rail journeys, a line that snakes through valleys, alongside rivers and through dense

woodland, offering glimpses of waterfalls and remote farms along the way.
Despite its peaceful feel, Betws-y-Coed is easy to reach. It sits just off the A5 and welcomes visitors year-round. From springtime when the forest floor comes alive with wildflowers, to autumn when golden leaves scatter the trails. Whether you’re here for a weekend escape, a longer walking holiday, or simply passing through enroute to the mountains, it’s a place that invites you to stay a little longer.

In all seasons and all weather, it remains one of Wales’ most inviting places to pause, breathe, and reconnect with nature. This is a must visit to add to your summer bucket list, whether for a day, weekend or even longer. n

An easy 20-minute drive from Betws-y-Coed, The Old Stag in Llangernyw is your typical traditional family owned, dog-friendly country pub. Originally built as a farm in 1640, The Old Stag was converted to a hotel in the late 1800's and into the current pub in the late 1970's. Situated in the shadow of the famous yew tree, which is reported to be at least 4,500 years old and is one of the oldest living things in the world, The Old Stag offers everything a country pub should, with a fresh menu offering a choice of daily specials. The minute you walk through the old oak door of the pub you are engrossed by the thousands of ancient and weird artefacts which adorn the ceilings and walls of the pub. The warmth and glow of the open fires radiate through the pub and the low oak beam on the ceilings hold a history of their own - ask King Charles as he recently visited the pub and even served some customers!

Relax in style in the heart of Betwsy-Coed and be soothed by the sound of the river…
Swn-y-Dwr is a wonderful place to take a break in Eryri. It is suitable for families, and for groups of friends wanting to relax or to engage in the many outdoor activities that Snowdonia National Park has to offer.
Located on the banks of the River Llugwy, two minutes from Betws-y-Coed town centre – just over the famous Pont-y-Pair bridge – Swn-y-Dwr is quite probably the best place to experience the peace and tranquillity of the natural splendour of North Wales.
This traditional holiday cottage, which sleeps up to 11 people, boasts a modern, contemporary feel. Set over three floors, Swn-y-Dwr has five bedrooms, landscaped gardens and a small balcony overlooking the river. Ideal for both families and groups of friends, this cottage is a very affordable place to take a break.
Swn-y-Dwr takes its name from the Welsh for “the sound of water” and as such is a very apt description of the soothing ambience created by the nearby river which flows serenely by the landscaped gardens of Swn-y-Dwr. n

Aber Bay Holiday Park near Aberystwyth – part of the Allens Caravans group – is, for the first time, introducing pop-up camping at its idyllic on-the-beach location.
The park, which is situated in the sheltered and picturesque Clarach Bay, with rolling hills in the background just a stone's throw from Aberystwyth, is creating a camping field with its own facilities for this summer and has also recently installed new glamping pods alongside its other accommodation options, which include cosy caravans and luxury holiday homes and lodges.
Aber Bay Holiday Park's beach-front location means that holidaymakers can literally step out of their accommodation and straight onto the beach. And, while it boasts spectacular views, the holiday park also has a beachside clubhouse, an indoor heated pool, entertainment, games room, outdoor play area and a restaurant with dishes made from locally sourced ingredients – making it the perfect place for family holidays. The pop-up camping pitches will be available throughout the month of August and include use of all the park facilities, which include indoor heated pool, entertainment, games room, outdoor play area, reception, launderette, shop, restaurant and bar. The camping field will have pop-up showers and washing up and toilet facilities, and prices are likely to start at around £25 - £35 per tent per night, giving a great budget option for such a stunning location.
Allens Caravans is family-run and has been providing holidays for the nation since the 1950s. CEO James Allen says: "With our history of providing holidays for the nation, we have
seen many different styles of accommodation, and we know what holidaymakers are looking for when it comes to flexible, modern spaces. We want to give as many options to people, and families, as possible, including the most cost-effective options, which is why we are offering the chance to camp with us this August."
Aber Bay has also just launched new luxuriously stylish glamping pods, which are the ultimate ‘tiny homes' getaway with flexible boutique-style living and sleeping spaces for six, plus a hot tub: perfect for families looking for a mini break. Allen continues: "A new generation of travellers want a more eco-conscious, unique, and Instagrammable stay. Guests want to minimize their carbon footprint while enjoying nature. We can't wait to start welcoming our camping guests to experience our beautiful park."
Allens Caravans' other parks include Sunbeach, which is located on the shores of Cardigan Bay and the countryside escapes of Abbot's Salford and Bredon View close to the Cotswolds.

Is there any better way to bid the day goodbye than by watching the sun melt into the horizon? North Wales is home to some of the most striking and unforgettable sunsets I’ve ever witnessed. In summer, I often find myself racing to a favourite vantage point, eager to see the sky ignite in crimson and gold. Life is made up of these simple joys – wisps of cloud brushed with apricot and auburn, the fading sun casting a warm glow across the deepening blue. I often watch in silence, soaking it all in, holding onto that final flicker of light before it slips beneath the sea.
The beauty of North Wales lies in its variety. Whether you’re after a romantic beachside picnic, a family-friendly stroll, or a challenging hike that rewards you with a panoramic view, there’s a sunset spot with your name on it. Along the north coast and western edges, are where the sunsets truly steal the show.
Few things feel more romantic than watching the sun go down hand in hand with your favourite person. Pack a picnic blanket, a flask of hot chocolate or something sparkling, and settle in for an unforgettable evening.
Llanddwyn Island in Anglesey is a perfect pick for sunset chasers. A designated National Nature Reserve, the island offers enchanting views over the Irish Sea and the distant peaks of Snowdonia. Another top contender is Porth Iago on the Llŷn Peninsula. This secluded sandy cove is tucked away between dramatic headlands and faces west. Pwllheli Beach is also a local favourite, its wide beach and easy access making it a go-to for evening strolls as the sun dips, other notable sunset spots are Black Rock Sands and
Similarly, Porthor (Whistling Sands) and Morfa Nefyn are also great options – particularly in August and early September, when the sun still sets in a northwesterly direction. Porthor’s sheltered setting makes it a lovely, low-key spot to soak in the last light of day. Over at Morfa
Nefyn, the stretch out toward Porthdinllaen offers a more dramatic perspective. From the golf course, coastal path or near the iconic Ty Coch Inn, you’ll get stunning views as the sun sinks into the sea. West Shore Beach in Llandudno also deserves a mention, quieter than its North Shore counterpart, it offers calming views towards Anglesey and Puffin Island.
Why not gain a bit of height and earn that golden-hour glow with a rewarding hike? Just be mindful of the time, and plan your descent carefully – especially if you’ll be coming down in fading light.
The summit of Snowdon is perhaps the most iconic choice. If you time it right, you’ll witness the last rays of sun kissing the mountain peaks, with panoramic views across the landscape. A more accessible but equally striking alternative is the Llanberis Pass, where you can perch on
a crag and watch the peaks turn gold. Conwy Mountain is another great option for a shorter hike with a big payoff. The summit offers sweeping views of the estuary, town walls and coastline.
Or head to the Great Orme in Llandudno, where you can either hike up or take the historic tram or cable car. The reward? Expansive views that stretch far out to sea, with the town and coastline bathed in orange below you. For another elevated experience, head inland slightly to Jam Pot Hill (Melin Foel Fawr) above Mynytho on the Llŷn, where a short uphill walk will gift you 360-degree views across Cardigan Bay and beyond.
You don’t need to trek up a mountain or seek out secret coves to enjoy a good sunset. Some of the best spots are easily accessible and perfect for an impromptu outing. Barmouth Beach is a favourite for many. Facing west and boasting a wide sandy expanse, it’s made for barefoot walks and fish and chips as the sky turns molten. Talacre Beach is another family-friendly spot, complete with its iconic Point of Ayr lighthouse. Dinas Dinlle Beach, near Caernarfon, is equally charming, its position offers views over the Llŷn Peninsula and Snowdonia.
For something a little different, consider the Conwy Town Walls or estuary. Strolling along the ancient walls as the sun sets over the water is a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Llandudno Pier is also a sunset favourite, the Victorian structure stretches into the sea and offers sweeping westward views.
And for a picture-perfect finale, Harlech Castle provides a fairy-tale frame to the setting sun. The elevated position of the fortress means uninterrupted views of the coast. Just a little further around the bay, Criccieth Castle offers another striking vantage point where you can watch the sun drop behind the craggy outline of the Llŷn Peninsula.
Speaking of the Llŷn, while the south is famed for its spectacular sunrises thanks to its orientation, the northern coastline is peppered with some great sunset spots that are well worth a visit.
A final note on timing
August is a wonderful month to seek out sunsets. There’s still plenty of light to play with: at the beginning of the month, sunset is around 9:30 PM, gradually drawing back to between 8:00 and 8:30 PM by the end. This gives ample time to plan an evening adventure, whether you’re staying close to home or venturing further afield.
These are just a handful of the abundance of stunning sunset spots that we have on our doorstep here, be sure to head out and explore for yourselves! But don’t be too quick to leave once the sun has dipped below the horizon. Many sunset seekers miss the magic that follows –those soft purples, rich pinks and lingering golds that paint the sky in the twenty minutes or so after the sun disappears. It’s a slow, beautiful farewell to the day, and one well worth staying to see.
Wherever you are in North Wales this summer, whether on a mountain, by a lake, or simply sitting on a quiet bench, take a moment to pause, look up, and savour it. Watching the sunset is a gentle act of mindfulness and appreciation. You’ll never regret chasing the sun. n

wind direction will change throughout the day. Make sure you know how they will affect your day and plan around the forecast!
When packing for your day, drinks and snacks are top of the list, but waterproofs and well-fitting walking shoes are essential for all if you are heading to the hills or along the coast path, whatever the forecast. If your plans involve the
beach, leave the inflatables at home; they should only be used in swimming pools.
It’s great to challenge the kids, but knowing when they’re beat and changing the plan before they go into meltdown is a vital skill especially halfway up a mountain! Stop for your picnic and head back down while everyone is still enjoying themselves; there’s always another day!
Many beaches in North Wales are not lifeguarded, and neither are the rivers and lakes, so it’s a good idea to respect the water and gen up on some simple water safety skills. If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember, Float to Live. Tilt your head back, relax and move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat. Everyone floats differently, so why not play the ‘Find your Float’ game with your family. How do you float? Flat on your back or with your legs dangling?
If you see someone else in trouble in the water this summer, remember CALL 999 to get help, TELL the struggling person to float on their back, and THROW them something that floats.

Dene Bebbington visits Bala, and discovers a lake with hidden depths…
Stand on Bala Lake's shore and you'll enjoy a wonderful view across the water to mountains beyond. But this is no ordinary lake. Swimming below the surface, along with commonly known fish, is a species found nowhere else. To discover the origin of the lake's Welsh name – Llyn Tegid – we have to travel back centuries to a time of myth, and much further back for roots of the unique gwyniad fish.
Legend tells of a poor harpist lured away by a mysterious bird from a palace where he was playing at a banquet celebration hosted by the cruel prince Tegid Foel. Exhausted after the journey, the next day he woke up in the hills and saw the palace had been inundated by floodwaters which are now the lake.
In an alternative folkloric story, a spirit inhabited Ffynnon Gower (Gower's well) and demanded that it be covered by a lid each night to keep evil spirits out. One fateful night the normally dutiful guardian had been out drinking and forgot to put the lid on, causing water to surge out from the well to drown the old town of Bala and leaving it submerged on the lakebed.
Though those origin stories have a certain charm, Wales' largest lake at a little under four miles long by one mile wide actually formed from glaciers thousands of years ago
during the last ice age. Before its name settled to what we know it as today, in the 12th Century the lake was known as Penmelesmere, or Pymplwy meer in reference to five nearby parishes. A few centuries later it got the name Llyn Tegid –translated by some as “lake of beauty” – but is now mostly called Bala Lake thanks to the small town of Bala located at the northern end.
Glaciers are why gwyniad only lives in this lake. Usually swimming in deeper parts and feeding on plankton, it's a small type of whitefish which was caught in large numbers back in the 19th Century despite a dubious eating reputation.
Reverend Bingley noted that: “With respect to the taste, this fish is generally said to be insipid” – compared to trout and salmon also caught in the lake.
Despite not moving overly fast, wind driven boats can be no less competitive – since at the least the early 1970s the lake has hosted sailboat championships. Nowadays you can also see amazing hydrofoil boats lifted above the water's surface to race over what one person approvingly called “the Lake Garda of Wales”.
Better appreciated bounties of the area were woollen garments. The versatile wool was knitted into various items such as gloves, wigs and stockings. Word of these stockings spread well beyond North Wales to England's monarchy. Troubled King George III (aka the “Mad King”) even ordered a special black pair made by the daughter of a vicar to help soothe his rheumatic legs.
Blissfully serene at times and offering fishing, a pleasant place to enjoy nature and activities on the water, it's no wonder that Bala Lake has attracted tourists since the 1800s when railways gave those from further afield easier access to the area. The White Lion Hotel, initially a coaching inn dating to 1700, kept up with tourist expectations. An advert from 1893 stated that it'd been rebuilt and refurbished to “provide every comfort and convenience to visitors” who could afford a minimum of 49s for a one week stay. It already had a good reputation before the revamp because in 1862 it impressed writer George Borrow who praised the quality of breakfast and ale.
Boating and sailing have long been popular waterborne pastimes. To preserve the peaceful atmosphere powered boats are unwelcome and prohibited, leaving those relying on arm or sail power for motion free from risk of colliding with noisy and fast moving craft.
For hardier watersport enthusiasts willing to immerse themselves in chilly water, the British Long Distance Swimming Association holds annual events at the lake. Meanwhile, landlubbing birdwatchers can seek out a cornucopia of birds that have been spotted around the lake. With the Berwyn National Nature Reserve to the east of the lake it's a good area for avian life. Sightings range from typical birds of prey like Red Kite and Buzzard, Mallard and Goldeneye ducks to waders like Oystercatcher and Sandpiper.
Have you heard rumours that something more out of the ordinary than gwyniad lurks in the dark, cold depths of Bala Lake? Dating at least to the 1920s there's been occasional reports of a crocodile-like creature, but as with its shy Scottish counterpart Nessie, so-called Teggie is probably just mundane disturbances of the water's surface. Or wishful thinking! It's unlikely that there's a prehistoric creature inhabiting the lake to upset what some people say is a place where souls can find peace. n

Ice cream. I scream, you scream, we all scream for it, and who can blame us? On a sweltering August day, ideally near the coast, time suddenly stands still when you have a cone full of chilled ice cream in your hands. If you’re taking a break in North Wales this month, you will find yourself entirely spoiled by the rich variety of home-grown ice creams available here.
We might well thank Italy for the profusion of ice cream parlours in the area. Forte’s and Parisella’s, two ice cream icons in Conwy and Llandudno, have been cooling down over-baked tourists since the 1950s and both were set up by Italian families who had made a home in North Wales and rewarded us with their gelato recipes from the old country.
When I was younger, you’d have to content yourself with a Mr Whippy with a Flake stuck in it – or a Mini Milk if you’d blown most of your pocket money in the arcades. Nowadays, making proper ice cream is a serious business and there are an infinite variety of styles and flavours to choose from. Rare is the town in North Wales that doesn’t have at least one super-snazzy ice cream bar.
The award-winning Red Boat Ice Cream in Beaumaris has recently expanded operations, opening four more sites across North Wales, including Caernarfon, where you’ll also find Palas Caffi, and Scoops, where the distinctly Dutch angle comes courtesy of Petra Crossman-Emms (who by coincidence was Paysanne’s first ever front-of-house).
Glaslyn in Eryri National Park is a local treasure, and Cariad Gelato is another home-grown mini-industry, based in Porthmadog but also found in Abersoch – where you’d be well advised to seek out the Two Islands ice cream parlour – and Criccieth.
Criccieth is a bit of an ice cream Mecca. It was there in the 1920s that the Cadwalader family first started making their own vanilla ice cream for the locals, and nearly 100 years later, this Welsh ice cream empire is still going strong.
My perfectly reasonable advice would be to sample as many of the locally produced North Wales ice creams as you can this month, then crack on with the diet in September.
Meanwhile, use a locally made strawberry ice cream as the rich centre of this super-easy summer dessert….n
(Serves 4)
2 punnets of strawberries
2 tablespoons of sugar
Juice of two lemons
Handful of chopped mint leaves
4 passion fruit, emptied
4 tablespoons chopped toasted hazelnuts
250 mls whipped cream
4 meringue nests
Strawberry ice cream
in a bowl with the sugar, lemon juice and mint. Cling film and leave in the fridge for a few hours.
Remove some of the strawberries and keep aside. Add all the other ingredients to the main bowl bar the meringues and mix them up together. Finally break the meringues into the bowl and slowly turn the mixture. Take a ring mould and half fill it with the meringue mix. Spoon a helping of strawberry ice cream on top, then cover with more mix. Lift up the mould, with the ice cream now hidden inside, and serve with some extra strawberries as a garnish. Serve before it melts! n

Much like many cocktails enjoying a spirited revival, the Southside is having its moment once again, just over 100 years since its earliest known incarnation. Now found on menus in some of the most respected cocktail bars, it’s a drink that sits comfortably alongside the likes of the Gimlet, the Daiquiri, and the Mint Julep.
Ask your favourite bartender or local cocktail aficionado to define the Southside, and you’re likely to get a variety of responses. Some will describe it as a Gimlet brightened with mint, while others might suggest it’s a gin-based Mint Julep, served up and citrusy. What’s universally agreed upon, though, is that the Southside is a delicate, well-balanced combination of gin, citrus, sugar, and mint, a combination that manages to be both vibrant and smooth, fresh yet refined.
As with many early 20th Century cocktails, the origin of the Southside is open to debate. My favourite theory points to the South Side neighbourhood of Chicago, where it's said that Al Capone’s gang would mix mint, citrus, and sugar with their harsh bootleg gin to make it more palatable during Prohibition. Meanwhile, others believe it hails from the Southside Sportsmen’s Club on Long Island, an elite gentleman’s retreat where refined cocktails were the order of the day.
The first known printed recipe appeared in 1917, in Hugo Ensslin’s influential book Recipes for Mixed Drinks, where it was listed as the South Side Fizz. That early version included gin, lemon and lime juice, sugar, mint, and a splash of soda. Today’s version skips the bubbles and sticks to just one citrus,
usually lime, resulting in a tighter, cleaner flavour profile.
We’re using Snowdon Summit Gin, a citrus-forward London Dry distilled with wild botanicals from the Welsh mountains. Among its standouts is red grapefruit, a bold aromatic note that brings a sharp citrus lift and subtle bitterness to the nose, the perfect match for the Southside’s minty freshness and zesty lime. It also features dried lemon peel and coriander, both high in limonene, which amplify the gin’s natural citrus clarity. The result is a cocktail that bursts with layered citrus character, balancing sweetness with bite.
Whether you subscribe to the gangster lore or the country club tale, there’s no denying the Southside's enduring appeal. It’s a cocktail that showcases gin in all its botanical glory while tempering it with a cooling lift.
Its comeback is part of a wider appreciation for preProhibition cocktails, proof that the best drinks never truly go out of style. With its light, zesty character and timeless elegance, the Southside remains not only a drink worth knowing, but one worth returning to again and again. n
Paddy Dobbs is the bar manager at Number 25 in Rhos on Sea. This local bar and bistro is home to a cosy restaurant upstairs and a welcoming cocktail bar downstairs – making it the ideal venue, whatever the occasion.
Whenever I go away, it always turns into a bit of a Busman’s Holiday. I’m a sucker for a visit to a local vineyard, brewery or distillery that I haven’t visited before, or even one I’ve been to many times before to see if anything has changed. It must drive my wife nuts, but she’s very happy to pack me off to the nearest spot that has something fermenting away so she can have a bit of peace and quiet for an hour or so!
I’m sure a few people will be venturing to warmer climes in August, or even to other parts of the UK and Ireland. If you’re about, look for what the locals are drinking, and see if there are local producers. There are some great places to visit while you’re out and about; there really is no substitute for chatting to the people who make these delicious drinks and seeing how they are made, and where they’re grown.
Velfrey Welsh Sparkling Wine NV £39.00
Established in 2016, Velfrey are based just outside Narberth in Pembrokeshire. Their traditional method fizz is superb quality, with flavours of peach, Danish pastries and buttery brioche. Do pop in and see them if you are holidaying in south-west Wales and meet all the dogs!
Château Tour de Mirambeau, Reserve Blanc, Bordeaux 2023 £16.20
Bordeaux has to be one of the best cities and regions to do a spot of vineyard visiting. More and more vineyards are opening up to the possibility of making more of the tourist industry. A must see is the Cité du Vin, which gives an insight into the history and styles of winemaking in Bordeaux. Often forgotten are the amazing white wines from the area; this excellent wine is as good on its own as with some chicken and asparagus.
Mariscal Manzanilla Sherry £15.50
If you are popping to the south of Spain this summer, you’re going to need something cold and crisp to stop you overheating. Do what the locals do and tuck into a cool glass of Fino or Manzanilla sherry, add a few green olives and a slice or two of jamon. Actually, why not sack off the queuing at the airport and just do it in the garden?
Tanners Douro Red 2021 £11.90
Porto has become a very popular destination for a long weekend, and a lot of the wine lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia are geared up to welcome visitors for tours. Port is still the main business here, but increasingly red and white wines are becoming more popular. Our Tanners Douro Red, made by Duorum, is full of vivid black and blue berry fruit, with soft tannins.
Samartzis ‘S’, Single Origin Syrah, Central Greece
2024 £15.60
If you’re following the herd down to Greece, you’ll find a whole lot of amazing wines that you might not stumble across in the UK. Panos Samartzis makes some incredible wines from indigenous varieties such as Mouhtaro and Kontoura, but also from French varieties like this Syrah. This is a lighter, yet complex style of Syrah, akin to northern Rhône styles, which works well slightly chilled at this time of year.
Vermentino di Sardegna, Melis 2023 £15.20
Wherever you go in the Mediterranean, there’s likely to be a vineyard or two. Sardinia is home to some terrific wines, and this refreshing, spritzy, peachy white from the west of the island is a great example.

In a bold and innovative move, Rhoscolyn based couple John and Jennie Bailey are offering a unique opportunity to win their Welsh retreat in Rhoscolyn for just £5.
The coastal haven is the definition of modern elegance with an open-plan kitchen and dining area ideal for entertaining, and the stylish dining-living space a perfect place to relax. The property also features a family bathroom, downstairs WC, balcony, private garage and shared garden.
Properties in Rhoscolyn are few and far between with the competition offering a rare opportunity for someone to get on the property ladder in this sought-after location which has a population of just 542 residents.
The unusual decision to market the property this way came after Jennie decided she wanted people to have an opportunity to live or holiday somewhere special when they may not ordinarily be able to do so. “I realise this is quite unorthodox, but that’s what we love about it – imagine winning a home in the most idyllic place for a fiver – it’s a life changing chance for someone!” says Jennie.
The competition, which is running until 1st January, is being hosted in conjunction with Raffall – an authorised company who facilitate the entries. Raffall offers unmatched credibility for hosts and security for entrants ensuring the raffle is fair, transparent, and protected.
The initiative offers participants the chance to win the property for the price of a £5 ticket, with multiple ticket purchases earning free entries to incentivize participation and increase the odds of winning. A minimum of 150,000
Rhoscolyn couple offer exclusive opportunity to win their seaside home on Anglesey for just five pounds…
tickets need to be sold for the main prize to be given. If less than 150,000 tickets are sold, the winner will receive a cash payment amounting to 50% of the total ticket revenue generated.
Situated in Rhoscolyn, the property is just a five-minute walk away from Borthwen beach, a crescent located on the southern shore of Holyhead Island. With shallow sloping sands, and an abundance of rock pools it provides an idyllic location for families.
“This really is a once in a lifetime chance for people to live or holiday in a magical place by the sea,” concludes Jennie. “We’ve been coming here for over 30 years, and the apartment has been our home-from-home. That was before we took the leap and moved here permanently in 2023 – it was always our dream to do so. We’re only moving round the corner as we love it here so much, and we can’t wait to see our home enjoyed by a new family and for them to build their own memories here.” n

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.
An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.
Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

In the joy and excitement of an engagement, a pre-nuptial agreement can seem an unnecessary exercise. But more couples than ever before are choosing to sign a “prenup” which can set everyone’s mind at rest whatever the future may hold.
Jon Moriarty, a solicitor and partner in the family team at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Conwy, explains how pre-nuptial agreements work…
A pre-nuptial agreement is entered into by a couple before they get married, setting out how assets should be divided between them in the event of a divorce, usually centring on what property will be kept separate and what will be considered joint.
Far from being a negative thing, many couples find the process creates a shared sense of openness and security, as well as reducing disputes in the event of a marriage breakdown – crucially helping to avoid costly and lengthy court disputes.
A pre-nupial agreement can provide peace of mind for everyone, but there are certain circumstances when it would be particularly helpful, such as:
A disparity of wealth between you and your partner: Prenuptial agreements are more likely to be put in place where one partner has, or is likely to acquire, more assets than the other. It allows them to safeguard these assets, if the marriage breaks down.
To protect a business: If one partner entering the marriage is a business owner then their business also counts as a significant asset which a divorce could affect.
To protect future inheritance: A pre-nuptial agreement can protect any future inheritance that one partner expects to receive. It can also protect inherited money and assets, as well as protecting children’s inheritance.
Overseas assets: If you are marrying someone from abroad, the laws relating to your partner’s home country may have an impact on how assets are divided in the event of a divorce. A pre-nuptial agreement can include a jurisdictional clause to set out the jurisdiction in which the divorce will proceed. n
The magnificent grounds of St David’s College were transformed into a glittering scene of celebration as the award-winning Llandudno school marked its 60th Anniversary Ball. Guests from across the decades, including many former students, parents, and staff, gathered to honour the school’s proud heritage in an evening filled with music, fine dining, and heartfelt memories. One of the many highlights of the evening was a dazzling performance by Old Davidean Andy Otley, a finalist on BBC’s The Voice in 2014. Andy captivated the crowd with his soulful renditions of Rat Pack classics, pop favourites, and disco hits. A nephew of the late comedy legend Ken Dodd, his performance was as entertaining as it was musically polished. As the final song echoed across the school’s historic campus, it was clear: this was more than just a summer ball, it was a celebration of everything that makes St David’s College truly special. www.stdavidscollege.co.uk.

Once considered the preserve of teenagers and metal brackets, orthodontic care has undergone a subtle transformation. Today, increasing numbers of adults are seeking to straighten their teeth not just for cosmetic reasons, but for function, health, and long-term comfort. And they’re doing so on their own terms: privately, discreetly, and under expert care.
Among the dental practices supporting this growing demand in North Wales is West End Dental, which offers aligner therapy as part of its comprehensive approach to oral health and aesthetic dentistry.
Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays designed to gradually guide the teeth into better alignment. Made from transparent medical-grade plastic, they are virtually invisible when worn and can be removed for eating, brushing, and cleaning. Each aligner is worn for around two weeks before being replaced by the next in the sequence. Treatment plans vary depending on the complexity of the case, but typically range from 6 to 18 months.
Patients today are increasingly looking for ways to improve not only their smile, but also the way their teeth function and feel. In many cases, misalignment can cause issues such as uneven wear, difficulty cleaning certain areas, or added pressure on jaw joints. Aligner treatment – when supervised by a qualified clinician – can help address these issues by improving bite and tooth positioning.
At West End Dental, patients are offered a carefully planned, clinically led approach. Every treatment begins with a full consultation and digital scan, followed by a bespoke treatment plan. The use of 3D scanning ensures that each aligner is tailored for accuracy and comfort, while also allowing patients to preview their potential outcome.
Although aligners are a medical treatment, many patients report that they also feel more confident as their teeth become straighter and more balanced. West End Dental often sees patients combining aligner treatment with other dental options such as whitening, composite bonding, or smile makeovers. In these cases, aligning the teeth provides a strong foundation for any further cosmetic enhancement, helping to ensure a more natural and long-lasting result.
Why more adults in North Wales are exploring clear aligner treatment – confidently and discreetly – at West End Dental. To find out more about Membership at West End Dental book a free consultation today – call 0808 164 1003 or
With practices in Colwyn Bay, Prestatyn, Llangefni, and Porthmadog, West End Dental is well positioned to offer clear aligner therapy in a private, professional, and calm setting. Importantly, all aspects of the treatment – consultation, aligner planning, check-ups, and final review – are carried out inhouse by registered dental clinicians. There is no need for external referrals. This ensures continuity of care and the reassurance that every stage of the process is overseen by professionals familiar with the patient’s oral health history.
For many adult patients, one of the most appealing aspects of clear aligners is how discreet they are. The transparent trays are barely noticeable in day-to-day life and fit comfortably over the teeth. Aligners also fit easily into most routines. Since they can be removed for meals and oral hygiene, patients are able to maintain their usual eating habits and cleaning routines without interference.
While many people are initially drawn to aligner treatment for cosmetic reasons, the benefits often extend well beyond appearance. Proper alignment can make teeth easier to clean, reduce the risk of gum disease, and improve how the upper and lower teeth meet when chewing.
Clear aligner treatment isn’t suitable for everyone, and the first step is always a consultation with a qualified dental professional. At West End Dental, patients are guided through a full assessment, where their goals, oral health, and suitability are carefully considered. For those who are suitable candidates, aligners can offer a flexible, discreet, and clinically effective way to improve both smile and function – without brackets, wires, or frequent adjustments.
In an age where confidence and wellbeing are increasingly linked to health, comfort, and quiet self-assurance, aligner therapy offers something refreshingly understated. For patients at West End Dental, the journey to straighter teeth is not about quick fixes or dramatic transformations – it’s about considered care, informed choices, and subtle change that feels entirely their own. n
North Wales Eye Specialist Centre offers specialist procedures
Cataract surgery is a common and safe procedure to treat cloudy vision caused by a cataract, which is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The operation usually takes 15–30 minutes and is done under local anesthesia, so you’re awake but won’t feel pain. Most people go home the same day and notice better vision within a few days. It’s one of the most successful surgeries, helping restore clear sight and improve quality of life significantly www.northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

It’s just after 6.30am and the house is quiet and still. I’ve just woken up to make my first coffee of the day and let Louie the labrador out before his breakfast. The phone rings and it’s a local nursing home. A resident has died peacefully overnight and the family have asked for us to bring her into our care. I take some personal details and thank the nurse for her kindness and patience – you never quite get used to these conversations but you do learn to handle them gently, even before sunrise. We confirm that we will attend shortly.
7:30am – Bringing someone into our care
Tristan and I arrive at the nursing home, the early morning sun is filtering through the windows. It’s quiet. Respectful. We greet the staff, offer our condolences and gently start the process of bringing their resident into our care. There’s no rush, no clinical efficiency, just dignity. Always at the front of our minds is that she is someone’s mum, sister, friend. We bring her into our care at our funeral home, ensuring she is signed in and her belongings noted. We then call the family to update them, offer our condolences and a promise we will call again the next working day to give them some time to come to terms with their loss.
9.00am – Team Meeting
We start every day with a team meeting, updating them all on what has occurred over night. We discuss the funeral due to take place later that day, so everyone knows their responsibilities beforehand to ensure everything runs smoothly.
11.00am – Meeting a Family
At our funeral home, we welcome a family we’ve had booked in to discuss arrangements for their dad, who died earlier in the week. We always give families space and time to take everything in before sitting down with us.
This part of my job always feels like a privilege – being trusted with someone’s final farewell. We sit with a cup of tea and I ask them to tell me more about him. I sit and listen. “He was a real joker,” his daughter says, with a smile. They decide on a cremation, with a celebrant leading, and are thinking about song choices. They are thinking of his favourite, Bowie. His grandson wants to read a poem. We talk through everything, gently and never let them feel rushed.
1.00pm – Lunch on the go
I grab my sandwich out of my bag, get Louie’s lead and head out on to Mostyn Street for a walk and to clear my head. He provides a lot more comfort than he knows – including to those people we stop and talk to on the way.
2.45pm – The Afternoon Funeral
We have a funeral at the Crematorium at 2.45pm, so final preparations begin the hour before. Bearers start to arrive ready for their briefing and I change into my funeral dress, shine my shoes, apply my lipstick and adjust my headband. The bearers head out first with everything we’ll need; donations box, service booklets, the photo and easel. We get the hearse and limousine out of the garage, check they are gleaming and head out to the family home.
At the crematorium, there is a good crowd gathered for the gentleman. The atmosphere is solemn but warm. The service runs without a hitch and as people leave they comment: “It was exactly as he’d have wanted it,” and that’s all we can ever hope for.
5.00pm – Winding Down
After returning to the funeral home, we update our records and get everything ready for tomorrow. It’s a quiet choreography, everyone knows their role and works together to provide the best possible service. At home, shoes off, dinner is on and my daughter is telling me about her day. There’s laundry to fold but I take a moment to sit and think about those we have helped today. Not just those who’ve died, but those left behind, trying to piece things together. That’s what our job really is – making grief feel a little less overwhelming. And I think: how lucky am I to do this? To meet people at their most vulnerable and be trusted to walk beside them, even just for a while.
11.00pm – Police Call
I’ve just turned off the lights and slipped into bed when the phone rings. It’s North Wales Police Control Room, asking for our assistance on behalf of the coroner. We dress quickly and quietly, and head out into the night to help. n

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)
You’ve been feeling a bit hollow lately, as though something’s missing. The loss of someone – or something – you care deeply for has left its mark. On quieter days, the emptiness is harder to ignore. If this is a passing phase, hang on to the hope that things will change. But if this is how it is now, don’t just sit with the silence—fill it with something new and meaningful. Small steps can help rebuild a sense of purpose..
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)
Chasing the good life is all well and good, but the glitter doesn’t always bring contentment. Something’s off – and deep down, you know it. You’ve ticked all the boxes, yet something still feels out of reach. Life throws its fair share of curveballs, and this month, you're learning that even struggles have value. Don’t be afraid to sit with discomfort. What you discover in the process could lead to long-term fulfilment.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)
Now’s the time to speak up and share your ideas. Not everyone will agree, and some may try to shut you down, but that’s just noise. The spotlight favours you this month, especially when it comes to interviews, auditions, or anything creative. People are drawn to your optimism and wit – and let’s be honest, you’re looking rather fabulous too. By month’s end, your natural charm is likely to win over even the harshest critics..
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)
Someone close has been taking advantage, and it’s starting to weigh you down. You’re always the one picking up the pieces, but this time it’s left you drained. It's hard when affection is tied up in obligation – but enough is enough. Being kind doesn’t mean being a doormat. You’re allowed to set boundaries and demand mutual respect. Hold your head high; your time and energy are worth protecting.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)
Your energy lights up a room, and this month, it’ll lift others too. Whether it’s a fundraiser, a community project or simply cheering up a friend, you’re the spark that gets things going. Getting involved will also rekindle talents you’ve tucked away. Don’t be surprised if you feel more fulfilled than you have in a long while. As the year edges closer to its end, you’ll be clearer than ever on what you want – and who you want to be.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)
Solitude suits you this month. You’ll find comfort in quiet corners – reading, painting, or just letting your mind wander. If you’ve got important paperwork or plans to make, mid-month offers a golden window. This is a good time to think ahead without interference. A little gentle exercise will reconnect you with your physical self, reminding you how closely the mind and body are linked. Keep things simple. Keep things soft.
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)
If you’ve been waiting for someone else to lift your spirits, you might be waiting a while. Joy isn’t always found in others – it can come from fresh experiences and new ideas. Take a class, go on a short trip, or shake up your social life. The mood lifts when you find something that stirs your curiosity. Group activities could surprise you by bringing real, lasting satisfaction.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)
Someone’s throwing shade because you’re doing well – and they’re not. It’s jealousy, plain and simple. Don’t stoop to their level. You’ve worked hard for your success, and that deserves your focus. Petty games and distractions are best ignored. As the month draws on, pour your energy into what matters most. Keep your cool, protect your peace, and don’t let anyone derail your momentum.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)
A friend needs a gentle nudge of encouragement, and you’re just the one to give it. Your honesty, warmth, and big-picture thinking can help lift them out of a rut. Around the 23rd, you’d be wise to take a step back from any heated exchanges. A bit of distance will help you see the situation more clearly. Sometimes, a new view – literally or emotionally – makes all the difference.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)
Conversations this month dig deep, and you may find yourself reflecting more than usual. The emotional burden of someone else’s troubles is starting to wear on you. Take some time for yourself to process what you’re carrying. Even a short pause can be healing. You’ll still manage a bit of fun and the odd getaway, but don't underestimate the value of stillness. If something's been niggling you health-wise, don’t put off speaking to a professional.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)
You don’t have to be “on” all the time. Constantly performing for others is exhausting – and unnecessary. Take a breath. Be yourself. Even in formal settings, authenticity speaks volumes. Later in the month, you may clash with someone stubborn. Rather than push for agreement, accept your differences and move on. Not everyone has to see things your way – and that’s perfectly fine.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)
Your body’s calling out for a bit more TLC. Too much indulgence, not enough balance, and you’re starting to feel the effects. A few mindful swaps in your diet could do wonders. Plan meals ahead, keep snacks healthy, and your mood will lift with your energy. On the work front, don’t worry too much. That person who’s been making life awkward may soon be heading elsewhere – and not a moment too soon.
