Tony’s Take SEC PARITY BEGINNING TO RESEMBLE THE NFL
LSU’s performance against Florida showed me that the Tigers have traded in their recent offensive prowess for something out of LSU’s past, where more than two touchdowns was reason to celebrate and most wins were by seven points or less.
But the Tiger’s ill-advised Heisman push for what has become a very ordinary, very mistake-prone, very versatility limited Garrett Nussmeir needs to end now. A fifth-year senior cannot be expected to survive a season in the SEC undefeated or even with one or two losses with the regression Nuss has shown after a gritty performance at Clemson. Either Nuss changes drastically in his game against Southeastern or the season may change dramatically for the Tigers in the win column. Nuss was told not to try and win the game by himself and he has done a remarkable job of NOT doing that with the negative play the offense has shown under his leadership.
It’s a good thing that Larry Ellison’s wife insisted the world’s richest man buy her the hottest prep quarterback from 2024 to play at Michigan because that young man today would have a legitimate chance of replacing Nuss based on #18’s anemic performances at home the past two weeks. He’s at Michigan now, learning and responding much faster than Nussmeir has over the past ten months.
What the Tigers should do is let its two backup quarterbacks play the entire game against Southeastern and let them learn the ropes before LSU has to travel to Oxford against Ole Miss and face an embarrassed South Carolina team in Baton Rouge two weeks later. The first weekend in October is a bye week and it should be used to supercharge the offense that LSU has displayed. Hopefully the Tigers can survive Ole Miss before the October schedule of South Carolina at home, Vanderbilt on the road and Texas A&M at home before the traditional bye week before a trip to Alabama.
However, LSU is not alone in its inconsistency misery. Look at Texas and Florida as two teams that should never have been ranked in the top ten nationally and the emerging returning to the pack by Alabama. The only real patsy in the 16-team league could be Mississippi State. Georgia took everything out of its play closet to beat Tennessee at home, Vandy clobbered what was supposed to be a very good Gamecocks squad, Arkansas showed its tough side against Ole Miss last weekend,Auburn is solid, Oklahoma could be the class of the league when its all said and done, Missouri has some real firepower and Kentucky is a stubborn team as well. Eleven league teams are in the top 25 nationwide. There is no Alabama mystique, no dominant Georgia squad. What remains is a surprisingly balanced 15-team league, currently led by LSU, Georgia, Texas A&M and Oklahoma but completely surrounded by Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss, Texas, Missouri, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Parity should favor LSU because the league has a bunch of good to very good quarterbacks but no visible NFL first day starters or franchise players. LSU’s defense might be the league’s best but it won’t carry them into a national championship game.
Brian Kelly has one week to get his offense on track…not great, but on track…..before the Ole Miss game. If the offensive line play doesn’t begin to approach SEC quality, if one or two big play playmakers don’t begin to emerge besides Aaron Anderson, this could be a cold and unsatisfying season for the LSU faithful. Let’s pray that Kelly and the staff can make it happen against Southeastern and Ole Miss before having to face Vandy in Nashville and Texas A&M at home, not to mention Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Oklahoma in Norman.

WHITE FUZZY GROWTH ON MEXICAN PETUNIAS.
Over the past few weeks, I have been getting calls about something strange going on with a plant that some gardeners don’t want anything to do with. Mexican petunia plantings throughout the Northshore area are experiencing strange white growths that take away from their tough as nails appearance. Once I was able to observe the symptoms with my own eye, I start to remember about a pest that popped up back in 2023 during our historic drought year.
The Mexican petunia, Ruellia simplex, has been a controversial plant to gardeners from the beginning. It also goes by the other common names such as Britton’s button and Texas petunia. It is native to Mexico and has since expanded its territory to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the warmer regions within the southeastern U.S. The plant itself has a spreading growth habit and spreads by way of rhizomes, or underground stems. We normally see it get about 2-3 feet tall and as wide as the bed or planter allows. It produces small tubular flowers that occur during the warm months, May through November. These flowers are purple/lavender in color and resemble a petunia, hence the common name. It is a tough, drought resistant plant with a long blooming season. The downside is in areas that don’t receive consistent freezing weather in winter, Mexican petunia plants can spread around and move across the landscape on their own.
In most cases, you see Mexican petunia plants used in containers and planters. They easily fill up the space and gardeners don’t have to worry about it spreading into other areas. Everything sounded fine and dandy until Summer 2023 came along. People started calling and wanting to know what is going on with their Mexican petunia plantings. Plants were being devastated by something causing white blotches on both stems and leaves leaving the plant with a measles-like appearance. After several consultations and site visits, I was able to determine the culprit. Those white blotches were a symptom of an eriophyid mite infestation.
Mites themselves are interesting organisms. From a taxonomist’s point of view, they aren’t classified as insects. Rather they are members of the class Arachnida, which some may know of as the same class as spiders. Mites are worm-like organisms, with 4 pairs of legs, and are so small their primary means of transport is the wind. For nutrition, they suck out plant juices using piercing/sucking mouthparts. Symptoms of feeding range from formation of small dots, or “stippling”, all the way to producing strange looking galls. These organisms can’t be seen by an unassisted human eye. We rely on visual feeding symptoms to learn about their presence.
The white blotches on Mexican petunia plants are symptoms of an eriophyid mite (Acalitus ruelliae) feeding on leaf and stem tissue. When observed closely, the blotches appear to be somewhat fuzzy. What you are looking at is a special type of growth distortion called erineum growth. Read about other types of eriophyid mites and you’ll learn that many people refer to them as gall mites because they cause a wide variety of interesting galls and growth disorders. So, it wasn’t powdery mildew, spittle bugs, or herbicide damage. Just feeding damage from something too small to see without a hand lens!
The basic recommendation to manage mites in landscape plants is to use some type of oil-like spray. This would include horticultural oils, neem oils, and insecticidal soaps. Read and follow the label instruction so that the product is applied properly, and good results are observed. If an application must be made, do it very late in the evening as the sun is going down because due to the nature of Mexican petunia, feel free to prune back halfway to two thirds and allow it to regrow. They will easily bounce back with regular watering and a fertilizer application.

Fall is Finally here! We just need the weather to cooperate! But, until then we can always do our Fall crafts! As promised, I have finished the second coaster in the set I have been working on. Yes, I am making more than one set of these. And no set is exactly the same. The brush strokes may be shorter or longer, a misplaced bristle, your hand may move a little differently, so they are never exactly alike, so I don’t even try. They are going to be different and that’s just the way it is. There is one more design in this series and I hope to have it done this coming week before I go to visit my granddaughter at Mississippi College for the weekend. I am putting cork on the bottom of each to keep them from scratching furniture. I am also leaving the cork a little wider than the actual coaster to pick up any dampness. I am applying four coats of varnish to the design. After these are done I have a couple of really cute Halloween pieces to show you and wait til you see the Thanksgiving cutie!!! I have everything planned out all the way to Christmas!
Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....They are all laid out waiting for me to get started. Till next time, Have fun!
Sincerely Paula Johnson
First Half: Tight Battle, Missed Chances
Well, it is not always necessary to win pretty just as long as you win! LSU went through 3 WEEKS in 1 day and did what it needed to do to come out on top! On a warm evening in Baton Rouge, the No. 3 LSU Tigers edged out the Florida Gators 20-10 in a gritty, turnover-heavy SEC opener for both teams. While Florida appeared to control much of the flow — especially early on — LSU’s opportunistic defense proved to be the difference.
Florida struck first, with Trey Smack booting a 45-yard field goal about midway through the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead. An apparent momentum-shifting play came when DJ Lagway connected with Jadan Baugh on what looked like an 87-yard touchdown, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. The Gators had to punt from deep in their own end zone.
LSU answered with a long field goal from Damian Ramos (47 yards) early in the second quarter to tie the game 3-3.
Following that, the Tigers put together a sustained 10-play, 76-yard drive capped by a 23-yard TD pass from Garrett Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas. That made it 10-3 in favor of LSU. Just before halftime, Florida matched with a similar drive: Lagway found Aidan Mizell on a 10-yard touchdown pass on third-and-9 to tie the game at 10. But as the half expired, LSU’s Ramos drilled a 45-yard field goal to send the teams into the locker room with LSU up 13-10.
Second Half: LSU Defense Dominates & Turnovers Doom
Gators
The third quarter is where LSU began to pull away. With the game still in reach early in the half, freshman safety Dashawn Spears intercepted Lagway’s pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown. That score extended LSU’s lead to 20-10 — a margin that would hold for the remainder.
Florida threatened late, especially early in the fourth when Lagway moved the Gators into LSU territory. Down 10 and eager to make a game of it, Lagway tried a deep pass into triple coverage from around the LSU 36 on third-and-9, but it was picked off in the end zone by Tamarcus Cooley with about 6½ minutes left. Then, after forcing another punt, Florida got another chance, with the ball at LSU’s 39. But under pressure, Lagway attempted a cross-field throw in heavy coverage; cornerback DJ Pickett intercepted it with about two minutes left, ending Florida’s final hope. LSU then chewed up the clock to seal the win.
Key Performers & Numbers
DJ Lagway (Florida) had a solid showing in yardage (33 of 49 for 287 yards, one touchdown), but threw a career-high five interceptions, four of them on third-down attempts — which proved catastrophic. He was also sacked three times.
Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) threw for about 220 yards and one touchdown, but was shaky at times, including a poorly-timed interception. His offense generally was less productive on the ground, with LSU rushing for only 96 net yards.
Dashawn Spears delivered one of LSU’s defining plays — the pick-6 in the third — turning what had been a one-score game into a buffer that Florida never overcame.
LSU’s defense also recorded three sacks and forced multiple turnovers, showing resilience even after early adversity: linebacker Whit Weeks was ejected early for targeting, leaving LSU a man down on defense for much of the game.
What the Stats Tell Us:
Interestingly, Florida outperformed LSU in several traditional metrics:
More total yards (366 vs. 316)
More first downs (23 vs. 10) and much greater time of possession (about 37:46 to 22:14)
But LSU’s ability to force turnovers, capitalize on them, and make key defensive plays in critical moments tilted the outcome. Penalties also hurt Florida — including the holding call that wiped out the long touchdown to Baugh.
Implications
& Takeaways
For LSU, the win keeps them undefeated at 3-0 and sets a positive tone in SEC play. It might not have been their most explosive offensive performance, but their defense and special teams made the difference.
For Florida, this one stings. They battled, had good moments, but simply couldn’t overcome turnovers and self-inflicted damage. I do not see an ending for Billy Napier where he finishes the season at the helm in Gainsville!
Overall, LSU won with defense, opportunism, and just enough offense. Florida may have looked better on paper in many traditional stats, but the scoreboard reflects what matters: critical plays in big moments. Are there things that the Bayou Bengals have to clean-up..ABSOLUTELY! The atmosphere was wonderful; the defense is elite while the games moving forward will only get tougher and need the full support of the Tiger Faithful! This team has a shot to be special, and I fully believe that Brian Kelly will tweak the offense enough to make sure they will be rocking and rolling when it needs to get the job done!

GARDEN MYTH-BUSTING: SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION
Gardeners are passionate people, and with passion comes advice. We take it and we give it. Over the years, a surprising number of “garden tips” have taken root, even when science tells us otherwise. While some of these myths are harmless, others can lead to wasted effort, poor plant health, or unnecessary costs. Let’s debunk a few of the most com-mon myths so you can garden with confidence.
Myth #1: Gravel Improves Drainage in Pots
It seems logical that adding gravel at the bottom of a container would help water flow out more quickly. In reali-ty, it has the opposite effect. Water tends to sit above the gravel in the saturated layer of soil, which actually keeps roots wetter for longer. Why? because water does not move easily from a layer of fine-textured material to a layer of coarse-textured material. The best way to ensure good drainage is to use a high-quality potting mix or add amendments such as perlite as or pumice to improve the soil. Oh, and make sure your container has a hole or two for drainage at the bottom.
Myth #2: Watering in Full Sun Scorches Leaves
Many gardeners avoid watering midday for fear that droplets will act like magnifying glasses and burn the leaves. However, water droplets evaporate quickly in the sun, long before they could cause damage. The real reason to avoid watering during the heat of the day is efficiency, more water is lost to evaporation. After all, it’s fairly common around here to have an early afternoon shower interrupt a hot, sunny day …and we welcome it! If you see your plants are in serious need of water at 2 PM, then water them, don’t wait until morning. But yes, for best results, water in the early morning when plants can absorb moisture before the day warms up and, we do want to avoid late-evening watering to help reduce the potential for disease pathogens that may develop on wet leaves left over night.
Myth #3: Newly Planted Trees Need to Be Staked Tightly
Staking a young tree too rigidly may seem protective, but it actually hinders development. Trees strengthen their trunks and root systems when they can sway naturally in the wind. This is why trees are wider at the base than further up the trunk. Unless a tree is in a very windy site or has a weak trunk, staking isn’t necessary. If you do stake, tie the trunk loosely to allow some flexibility and remove the supports within a year. Using an old bicycle innertube, burlap, canvas strapping, or other nonabrasive material is much better to use for support around a tree than wire or rope.
Myth #4: More Fertilizer Means Better Growth
It’s easy to believe that feeding plants more will result in faster, healthier growth. Unfortunately, overfertilizing can “burn” roots, disrupt soil biology, and even wash excess nutrients into waterways. The amount of fertilizer plants need also depends on the type of plant. For example: different lawn grasses have different fertilizer requirements; adding too much nitrogen to tomatoes can result in more shoot growth and less tomatoes. Plants thrive best with slow, balanced feeding and, most importantly, healthy soil. Getting your soil tested is a good start to see how much you need to apply to your specific crop and apply only the recommended rate(s).
Myth #5: Epsom Salt will Change the Color of Hydrangeas
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate that contains, obviously, magnesium and sulfur. We use sulfur or sulfur-based products in the form of sulfates to lower the pH in soils but, these sulfate products serve other purposes as well. The flower color of hydrangeas is determined by soil pH. The less acidic soils will promote pink flowers but, more acidic soils (below 5.5) will promote blue flowers. How? It’s aluminum in soils that promote the color change from pink to blue in hydrangea flowers since aluminum availability increases at a pH below 5.5. Using Epsom salt will not lower the pH enough because magnesium has a neutral effect on pH. So, if you want to change the color from pink to blue, use Alum (aluminum sulfate) not Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate).
Myth #6: Organic Pesticides Are Always Safe
The word “organic” often gives the impression of harmlessness, but even natural pesticides can negatively im-pact pollinators, beneficial insects, and the environment if used incorrectly. When one uses the word “poisons” when referencing pesticides keep in mind, the dose makes the poison. It’s as safe as the user applies them. Any pesticide prod-uct over-used or over-applied can become a “poison” …organic or not. Neem oil, insecticidal soaps, and pyrethrins can be effective tools, but they must be applied carefully, in moderation, and according to the label.
Gardening is full of tradition. We’ve gotten and given a lot of advice handed down over the years and, some of it holds true. But separating fact from folklore can save time, money, and even your plants. So, the next time you hear a bit of “garden wisdom,” take a moment to ask, is this fact or fiction? Do some research and rely on factual, research-based information. Your plants will thank you.

COMPOSTING
September is a great time to buy or build a compost bin. Cooler months bring many fallen leaves that are ideal for adding to your compost pile or for starting a new one. For most home garden composting, com-post bins should be at least three feet wide by three feet high. The pile needs to be big enough to maintain heat and moisture for microorganisms. Compost piles can vary in size depending on how much organic waste is available. Make sure to turn compost piles at least twice a month to ensure there is enough oxygen present.
What to add:
• Leaves
• Pine straw
• Fresh grass clippings
• Fruit and vegetable peelings and scraps
• Egg shells (do not compost eggs, only shells)
• Coffee grounds
• Tea bags
What NOT to add:
• Diseased plants or plant materials
• Weedy plants that have gone to seed. Putting these seeds back into the garden can cause many weeds to regrow.
• Grease, fats and oils, meat scraps, or bones. These may attract dogs or other animal and insect pests, and they may cause an offensive odor.
• Sawdust or wood shavings from preserved wood. These may contain harmful chemicals.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Where is this little guy going? He is much too little to be wandering around by himself at maybe three weeks old. He needs the protection of his mother and the companionship of his littermates at this age. Feral cat mothers have a formidable task, trying to feed, corral and protect their kittens. Most of them do an amazing job, but the larger the litter, the more difficult the task. Feral cat mothers move their litters frequently to keep them safe from predators. Sometimes there is a straggler, as in this case. Fortunately, this little guy was reunited with his littermates. But it is a dangerous life for them out there and many do not survive. Well, that’s nature’s way, some will say. What isn’t nature’s way is for so many people to claim cats as pets but not take care of them. Spaying and neutering are just basic pet care and the surgery can go a long way to prevent pet overpopulation and suffering. Local shelters and rescue groups have information on low cost or free spay/neuter surgery. Please don’t put it off for your kitten.
