Tony’s Take
DEATH VALLEY DISAGREEMENT FALLS ON DEAF EARS
We’ve had this discussion before. Clemson has been called Death Valley for a longer period than LSU. But there are two other parts to this argument: “Tiger Rag” and the actual Tiger mascot. The Clemson band plays “Tiger Rag” somewhere between tourist jazz and elevator Muzak while the LSU band knows what the New Orleans version is. And the Tigers? Are you kidding? LSU has a live Tiger; Clemson has a student Tiger mascot that looks like a Trump-era Democrat….or maybe the tiger Hobbes character from Calvin and Hobbes . While LSU’s student mascot is a much better (though not perfect ) depiction of a Bengal Tiger, he doesn’t look like he’s been a three day opioid jag like the Clemson version.
Now…on to the game. Clemson is a beautiful place to watch a game, a rare east/west oriented stadium in a setting similar to Georgia. Clemson players must be taken by bus from their west end zone locker room around the north sidelines a half mile or less to the top of a hill above the east end zone. There, a slightly overrated tradition of having the players and coaches and staff members and a few facility members trot, jog, saunter or walk down a carpeted entrance from the hilly east side to their sideline on the south side is performed. Supposedly all participants touch a Death Valley rock brought and placed there by former coach Frank Howard before they begin their less than dramatic entrance to Memorial Stadium. Compared to the entrances of most college teams, this is a meh moment. It cannot compare to the pre-game entry at Bryant Denney, Tiger Stadium, Florida State, Oklahoma, Ohio State or Notre Dame, let alone the Auburn Eagle or the USC or Florida State mascot entry on a fiery steed, complete with either sword-wielding or spear-planting.
Now - on to the game. Clemson’s offense was a perfect foil for their defense. Vanilla play-calling and a retooled LSU defense kept the score low in the first half. An unsettled Garrett Nussmeier shook off a Les Miles-style first half ending play call by Brian Kelly as the real Tigers took a 10 to 7 deficit into halftime.
But things changed. Clemson didn’t. Their vaunted defensive line, the most talented since their 2016 to 2018 teams, did little to live up to their reputation against a completely retooled LSU offensive line. Their experienced offensive team (minus a running attack) did even less. One touchdown, and that following an LSU fumble on the Louisiana tiger side of the field in the first quarter. 31 rushing yards. A preseason All-American quarterback that looked rather pedestrian for most of the game.
LSU coach Brian Kelly has faced an uphill fight to put together a comprehensive team following those that choked away three of their five first games during LSU’ past five seasons. The only hill he faced Saturday was Howard’s Rock Hill, where Clemson’s uninspiring entry onto the stadium floor was matched by an uninspiring second half against a team that began as Deaf Valley years ago and will keep that title while reclaiming, at least for this year, the right to be called Death Valley. Don’t need no rock to have the LSU Valley create an atmosphere of deathly fear on Saturday night.
The Tigers are back, thanks to the transfer portal, and since college football legend Lee Corso predicted LSU to be this year’s national champions, can we question the wisdom of this now retired 90-year old sports treasure? Texas and Alabama showed they might not be “all that” this year and although there are the Ohio States, Penn States, Georgias, Oregons and Notre Dames out there who say different, the college football world now knows that LSU remembers how to hit you in the mouth after several years of……looking like the Clemson mascot.

CLIMBING HEMPVINE, MIKANIA SCANDENS
Have you noticed the abundance of white flowers covering the vegetation in moist areas, thickets, marshes, and other moist areas while driving throughout Southeast Louisiana? It’s quite a stunning show to witness and all those flowers are a significant food source for many pollinating insects. Some may think that this plant is an invasive weed, seeing how it covers everything in sight, but it’s actually a native plant that’s been growing in this area longer than we have!
Climbing hemp vine, Mikania scandens, is a native, perennial, herbaceous, twining vine that occurs from Maine eastward to Michigan, down to Florida and westward into Texas. Typical vining plants utilize tendrils, or thread-like appendages, to attach themselves onto structures or taller growing plant material. Twining vines lack tendrils. They attach themselves to other plants by wrapping their entire stem around a structure in a helix pattern. Other plants that exhibit this growth habit include Carolina jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens), coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), and American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens).
The white clusters of flowers are what most people see first notice when they encounter climbing hemp vine. Although white is common, some individuals may show hints or purple or pink. Flowers arise in clusters from leaf axillary buds and resemble that of boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). They typically appear in late summer during the months of August and September.
The plant itself can grow up to fifty feet if allowed to sprawl on its own. Leaves are cordate in shape with coarsely dentate margins and emerge opposite each node along the stem. The leaves are in close resemblance to morning glory, a common weedy vine seen in similar situations.
Being a native plant, climbing hempvine supports local pollinators and is a host for several different Lepidopteran species (moths and butterflies) such as the scarlet-bodied wasp moth, salt marsh moth, splotched groundling moth, and little metalmark butterfly. These insects will deposit eggs onto climbing hempvine plants. After eggs hatch, the small caterpillars will consume plant tissue before pupating and emerging as adult moths or butterflies.
Most will enjoy the beauty and ecosystem benefits of climbing hempvine, but in some situations it can be a weedy mess. For those looking clean up a garden with uninvited hempvine plants growing throughout, hand-pulling is an option, but the use of a herbicide can help. The common recommendation for controlling unwanted vines growing throughout a landscape is to locate where they root into the ground, cut the stem, and apply triclopyr herbicide directly to the root end wound. Big box stores and garden centers typically carry products labeled as cut vine and stump killers. These products include packaging that allows you to precisely apply the active ingredient to a fresh cut would on the target plant. It allows the operator to be very precise with their herbicide applications. This plant is numerous in natural areas so feel free to clean up weedy pockets of climbing hempvine to improve the aesthetics of your personal green spaces. For folks whose yards back up to natural vegetation, be observant during the growing season and prune back as needed before it becomes a weedy pest. That way you can keep the area tidy and still feel good that you are helping to conserve the South Louisiana environment.

September is Finally here! Hopefully we will be getting cooler temperatures in the next couple of months. Won’t that be nice? I can hardly wait! It will also be nice to get a break from the high electric bills.
By Paula Johnson
With that being said, I ran across an Italian Artist on the internet who had the cutest Autumn ornament designs. I thought they would make adorable coasters. I emailed the artist and ordered the designs from her. Once I received the packet I went about resizing them to fit the coasters I have. I decided to paint the scarecrow first as he is my favorite. I really like his happy face! Most scarecrows don’t have such a wonderful smile and happy eyes. I still want to add something to his though. I feel like it needs something to give it more interest. Maybe a small sunflower, a bird, what about a wooden button? He was so much fun to paint! I am going dig through my stash for a wooden button, choose a color, paint the button, and add it to the hat! That will finish it off nicely. I can hardly wait to send the artist a picture of how I envisioned her creation.
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I will be finishing the other two designs for my coasters. I can hardly wait to show you!
Sincerely Paula Johnson
It took a minute for the offense to get going but the Tiger defense was blitzing and showing athletic ability as soon as they got off the bus.
In a gritty season opener on August 30, 2025, No. 9 LSU handed fourth-ranked Clemson a 17–10 defeat at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina—marking LSU’s first season-opening win since 2019.
A Defensive Showcase
Well, the opening game jinx is off Brian Kelly’s back and it was as good of an opening Saturday that LSU could have wished for. After having Texas fall flat against Ohio State with a very poor showing from Arch Manning than see Alabama get embarrassed in Tallahassee against Florida State the night cap against Clemson was set-up as the cherry on top the proverbial dessert for the Bayou Bengals.
LSU’s defense was the clear protagonist. The Tigers completely stymied Clemson in the second half, allowing just 31 yards on 20 carries, with Clemson’s longest run only seven yards. Clemson’s offense was rendered virtually one-dimensional, limited to a quarterback-only attack as their rushing game went dormant.
Veteran linebacker Harold Perkins Jr., returning from an ACL injury, played a game-changing role— recording five tackles, a sack, and several pressures. Other notable defensive contributions included Mansoor Delane’s interception and consistent pressure up front that disrupted Clemson’s rhythm throughout the night.
Offense Finds Balance and Resilience
LSU’s offense, coordinated by Joe Sloan, leaned into the run game successfully—posting 31 rush attempts for 108 net yards (effectively 120 when considering a sack). This balanced approach allowed them to control the clock—possessing the ball for 37:10 to Clemson’s 22:50.
Despite an early red-zone fumble and some momentum shifts—including a controversial overturned catch and a missed field goal—LSU’s “1-0 mentality” prevailed. That mindset, embodied by their “1-0” warm-up shirts, emphasized treating each game as its own fight.
Game-Breaking Moments
Clemson struck first when a fumble forced by Clemson’s defense set up a 42-yard field goal by Nolan Hauser late in the first quarter. LSU responded late in the second quarter with a 52-yard field goal from Damian Ramos, knotting the game 3–3 at halftime.
LSU took the lead in the third quarter with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Caden Durham after mounting an eight-play drive. Then, early in the fourth, Garrett Nussmeier connected with Trey’Dez Green on an 8-yard touchdown pass, pushing LSU ahead 17–10.
Clemson’s
Last Stand Falls Short
Trailing by seven, Clemson engineered a late drive into LSU territory, moving to the 15-yard line. Yet LSU’s defense held firm. On fourth-and-4, Cade Klubnik was hurried and unable to convert—his pass fell incomplete, sealing the win for LSU.
Breaking the Season-Opener Jinx
The victory was especially meaningful for LSU head coach Brian Kelly—it ended his team’s six-year seasonopening losing streak and marked his first-ever win, as LSU’s coach, in a season opener.
QB Garrett Nussmeier carried the LSU offense with 230 passing yards and orchestrated the gamewinning scoring drive. Meanwhile, Clemson’s Cade Klubnik also threw for 230 yards but was ultimately stifled in the second half.
Looking Ahead
With a season-opening win and confidence bolstered, LSU gears up for key SEC matchups this September, including contests against Florida and Mississippi after their home opener against Louisiana Tech. With more reps under them the offense should be ready for a potential big contest against the Gators while the defense is already in mid-season form and conjuring up memories of Bayou Bengal defenses of old.

SOIL TESTING
As the end of our warm season lawn’s growing season begins to wind down as the days become shorter and temperatures begin to drop, even though it doesn’t really feel like it right now, and we look toward the dormant period for our lawn, now is a great time to take a soil test to determine what deficiencies our soil may have so we can make adjustments or plans for the upcoming year. Depending upon the species of turfgrass you are growing, lime may need to be applied to raise the pH of your soil. This is typically recommended to be done over the dormant period as it can take time to adjust the pH and this allows for the adjustment to be completed by the time the turf begins growing in the Spring.
When submitting a sample for testing, it is best to take multiple, small samples compiled together to get a representation of the area being tested rather than one large sample from the area. This helps even out any irregularities within the sample and represents the area better that may have small differences in soil type, drainage, or management practices. It is recommended that if there are major, known differences in any of these, then separate samples be submitted for those areas. The more samples you submit the more detailed you can make your management practices. This can be a good first step in helping identify possible differences in plants that are healthy and thriving vs those that may be struggling a bit.
A good sample depth is typically within the rootzone of the crop being grown (Ex. 3-5 inches for lawns). Submitting your test now gives you the ability to lay out and organize a plan for next year so you aren’t caught off guard by a possibly early spring. You can get any needed fertilizer materials over the coming months as opposed to rushing to get them at the last minute once the growing season begins. Please contact your local county Extension Agent if you would like assistance interpreting your soil test results.

HERB GARDEN
Herbs are a unique group of plants valued for their flavors and fragrances. Many of the culinary herbs used in cooking and teas can be successfully grown in Mississippi gardens. Most herbs thrive in full sun, though a few will tolerate partial shade. They grow best in welldrained soil of moderate fertility with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and benefit from an organic mulch during the summer months.

In Mississippi, herbs may be annuals planted each year, biennials that are seeded in fall and bloom the following season, hardy perennials that return year after year, or tender perennials that may survive mild winters but often need protection from freezing or must be grown as annuals.
Many popular herbs can be started from seed, while perennial varieties are often propagated by stem cuttings, layering, or crown division. Nurseries and garden centers frequently sell annual and perennial herb plants, and both seeds and plants are widely available through mail-order companies.
Since herbs are typically used in small amounts, just a few plants of each type will usually be sufficient. However, if you want to harvest large quantities, such as basil for making pesto, it’s best to plant them directly in the vegetable garden. Otherwise, a dedicated herb bed allows you to enjoy their beauty as well as their fragrance.
Herbs are relatively free of pests, which is helpful since few pesticides are labeled for use on them. If herbs are planted within the vegetable garden, care should be taken to protect them from pesticide applications meant for vegetables.
When transplanting, it’s best to use container-grown herbs to avoid disturbing their roots. Some herbs, such as borage and dill, do not transplant well when barerooted. These are best direct-seeded into the garden or started in containers.
The distinctive scents and flavors of herbs come from oils within the plant tissues. Conditions such as heavy fertilization, too much moisture, or excessive shade reduce oil content, leading to weaker flavors. In most herbs, oil concentration is at its peak just before flowering begins.
This year marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans. Before Katrina, it was estimated that over 260,000 families had pets, and around 104,000 pets were abandoned during the crisis. Many residents assumed they would return within days, leaving food and water for their animals. Tragically, thousands of these pets perished, and an estimated 88,000 animals were displaced across the Gulf Coast. The storm highlighted the vulnerability of both people and pets during emergencies.
On the front lines of what is considered the largest animal rescue operation in U.S. history was the Louisiana SPCA, working alongside organizations such as the San Diego Humane Society, the Humane Society of Broward County, the Humane Society of Missouri, and the Nebraska Humane Society. Together, they worked tirelessly to rescue and transport more than 15,000 animals, navigating the drastically altered landscape of New Orleans, which had been warped by structural damage and widespread flooding from the storm.
Hurricane Katrina served as a catalyst for change in pet evacuation preparedness in New Orleans, across the Gulf Coast, and nationwide. Lessons learned from land and water rescues, sheltering, and rehabilitative care became the foundation for new national protocols. These experiences ultimately led to legislation that transformed disaster planning for both people and pets. In 2006, two key pieces of legislation were enacted: the Louisiana Pet Evacuation Bill, signed by Governor Kathleen Blanco, and the PETS Act, approved by Congress. Both strengthened local and state disaster planning, ensuring that every parish in Louisiana now has measures in place to prevent families from having to choose between their safety and the well-being of their pets.
Families can now evacuate safely with their pets, reducing loss and suffering during disasters. Hurricane Katrina continues to influence how government agencies and animal welfare organizations plan to protect both people and animals. To help people learn more about the rescue efforts, the Louisiana SPCA has released a short film, 20 Years Stronger: Remembering Katrina. The film highlights the work of the LASPCA and the support of local and national partners during the Katrina response. It is available to watch on the Louisiana SPCA’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/@LouisianaSPCA

We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Where is this little guy going? He is much too little to be wandering around by himself at maybe three weeks old. He needs the protection of his mother and the companionship of his littermates at this age. Feral cat mothers have a formidable task, trying to feed, corral and protect their kittens. Most of them do an amazing job, but the larger the litter, the more difficult the task. Feral cat mothers move their litters frequently to keep them safe from predators. Sometimes there is a straggler, as in this case. Fortunately, this little guy was reunited with his littermates. But it is a dangerous life for them out there and many do not survive. Well, that’s nature’s way, some will say. What isn’t nature’s way is for so many people to claim cats as pets but not take care of them. Spaying and neutering are just basic pet care and the surgery can go a long way to prevent pet overpopulation and suffering. Local shelters and rescue groups have information on low cost or free spay/neuter surgery. Please don’t put it off for your kitten.
