It was Kismet. Halftime at the NFC Championship game in Santa Clara with the home team 49ers trailing the Detroit Lions, 24 to 7 ten days ago. At the party I attended, It was a mixed rooting crowd, light royal blue and silver/white mingling with the red and gold and black of us wearing the San Francisco gear. It was the same score by which the the 49ers led the Lions at halftime during the 1957 NFL West’s playoff game, pairing two 8 and 4 teams which had won their respective home games against each other that year in the league’s normal round robin pair offs. Listen, my children, as we travel back in time 66 years ago to a sunny San Francisco Sunday in 1957……..

DIRT & DEMOLITION

A coin flip had the Niners as the home team at venerable Kezar Stadium, the high school, college and professional 60,000 seat, east/ west oriented stadium on the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park. On the south side was Polytechnic High School and on the northeast side The University of San Francisco and St. Ignatius High School. The dressing rooms were in the east end zone area and it was about a 30-minute walk from my first home in the Haight-Ashbury.

•Driveways •Roads •Land Clearing •Dirt Hauling • Ponds

Built 100 years ago in 1924, this concrete open air stadium cost only $300,00 to construct and featured a manually operated scoreboard, no flashing lights and no luxury boxes. My dad had taken me to a few 49er games a year or two before the 1957 season but never to a high school or college game there. Just prior to those days, college ball was a Sunday sport in San Francisco and my father resented pro football playing on that day. But my only time on the grass at Kezar was as a young fan or playing a few high school games there in the early ’60’s.

The 49ers were led by former LSU quarterback Y.A. Tittle, the only professional player in the NFL ever named Yelverton. He was my original “YAT”, known as “Colonel Slick” or “The Bald Eagle” for his bald head. Tittle was the epitome of professional quarterbacks of that era; limited athleticism, pocket passer, no RPO, three other running backs in the backfield with him, two receivers. The 49ers were as talented a pro team on the offensive side of the ball as the league had then: Hugh McElhenny, Joe Perry and John Henry Johnson in the backfield, Billy Wilson, Clyde Conner and R.C. Owens as receivers and a rookie quarterback named John Brody who nine years later would be the fulcrum on which the rival AFL and the NFL would merge in 1966 and become the modern National Football League. They were playing the Detroit Lions, whose featured quarterback was Bobby Layne and whose most famous player ever, Alex Karras, would reach cult status as “Mongo” in “Blazing Saddles”. The Lions couldn’t normally outscore the 49ers and the 60,000 who poured into Kezar that beautiful day hadn’t paid more than $15.00 for even the most choice tickets. Dad and I paid $6.00 each for west end zone seats, about halfway up the bowl and our backs to the wind. I really don’t remember much about the game except the 49ers took a 24 to 7 lead into the halftime locker room and kicked an early 3rd quarter field goal by Gordy Soltau. 24 to 7, 27 to 7. Kinda like the score in Slidell on January 28th except that Detroit had the lead last month. But the 49ers, led by improbable events, questionable coaching by Detroit, a case of dropsies by the Lions’ receivers and the sheer will of a superior offensive plan finally allowed the 49ers to come back, tie the game, go ahead and stop the Lions with less than a minute remaining, to return to the Super Bowl for the 8th time this January. In the 1957 pre-Super Bowl era, the Detroit Lions, incensed by the 49ers taunting them by banging on the thin wall between their respective locker rooms at Kezar, decided to kick butt in the second half. Tittle had two interceptions, broke his leg and rookie Brodie came in and couldn’t do a thing to stop the Lions’ comeback. The final score was 31 to 27, Detroit, and the only person more upset than me that evening was my mother. Mom had been at The Green Frog Market in our neighborhood, second in line, to buy the equivalent of two Super Bowl tickets for $10 each in those innocent days. Mom was not too happy about this fool’s errand and let us know it in no uncertain terms. Two weeks later, in Detroit, the Lions destroyed the Cleveland Browns, 59 to 14, in Jim Brown’s first season, to win its last professional football title. 66 years ago. Sorry, Motown, but Brock Purdy’s Eleven outdanced The Jackson Five and Diana Ross and her group were not as Supreme as the 49ers defense. San Francisco’s Tops cancelled what became a Temps appearance by Detroit and the 49er streakers out hustled The Spinners. The Motor City, featuring the tony neighborhood of Grosse Pointe, played rather Grossly in the second half. In retrospect, I’m glad my friends didn’t take my bets during the halftime pause last month. I hate to lose and throwing money after it doesn’t help the situation. Now…on to the bigger challenge of trying to stop Mahomes and his Maautomatic ability to win games in the last two minutes. And I’m not betting any bucks this Sunday against Kansas City. -0-

Words to GREAUX by GET READY TO PLANT SPUDS

Irish potatoes are some of the most popular grown fresh vegetables, according to U.S. consumers. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) reports that the average person consumed 29.3 pounds of fresh grown Irish potatoes in the year 2021, which is a 13% decrease from 33.7 pounds reported in 2016. Even though the per capita consumption has decreased in the last few years, potatoes are still the most popular vegetable grown in ag fields and back yards alike. Some of the reasons to explain their popularity include the common occurrence in American cuisine, ease of propagation, and long storage life.

A common misconception about potatoes is that many people believe they are the roots of the potato plant. The edible part of the potato plant is actually a modified version of a stem, a tuber. Tubers are storage organs in which the plants store energy in the form of carbohydrates. Sweet potatoes store energy in their roots, which is botanically different than a tuber. Irish potatoes also contain about 1.5g/100g of dietary fiber and around 500g/100g potassium. When prepared simply, they can be an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. To produce your own crop of potatoes, start out by acquiring seed potatoes. Garden centers and feed stores usually stock seed potatoes early in the year during the months of January and February. You will find different types available. The most common types are red and white. Some of the recommended red skin varieties include: ‘Norland’, ‘Red LaSoda’ and ‘Red Pontiac’. Recommended white skin potatoes include: ‘Norchip’, ‘Kennebec’ and ‘Yukon Gold’. Fingerling potatoes are becoming more popular in in everyday cuisine. They are described as small, elongated tubers similar to that of a finger, hence the name, and come in many different colors. Look through some of your seed catalogs for varieties like ‘Russian Blue’, ‘Red Thumb’, and ‘French Russian Banana’. Once seed potatoes have been acquired, cut each potato into 1 ½ - 2-ounce chunks (with each chunk containing 2-3 eyes) and allow them to heal 7 days in a dark, cool place before planting outside in the garden. This step allows you to produce several plants from one tuber and the healing steps allow each “seed” to heal, creating a protective callous that will keep unwanted fungi and bacteria out. Seed potatoes can be planted anytime from mid-January through the end of February. Space plants 12 inches apart for maximum yield potential. Shoots and foliage will emerge as days warm in the spring and the crop will be ready to harvest 90-120 days after planting.

Hi, Everyone! Well, the first weekend of Mardi Gras is behind us. Even with the horrible rain, I hope whoever braved the crowds Friday night and Saturday had a great time at the parades. I decided to sit this weekend out. Just don’t feel like fighting the crowds this year. Instead, I thought I would paint a simple Valentine’s pin. Since my granddaughter had so much giving the butterfly pins away I thought that may be a nice treat for someone who doesn’t have a valentine or someone who is having a bad day.

I found the little hearts at Hobby Lobby, the larger heart is one I had ordered from the woodcutter a while back. This is such a simple design and was so much fun to paint. I ended up painting 20 of the smaller hearts. I base coated them with cherry red which is a transparent color. Some of the hearts I only put one coat of paint on so the wood grain would show through, the others I put two to three coats on them. I added some polk dots with bubblegum pink, thinned the cherry red with water to make a wash and applied that to tone down the brightness of the pink. Painted on a couple of very simple roses, added a single word, used a gold paint pen to finish the edges, varnished the design, and finally glued a pin back to the heart. Finished! I am showing you three of the designs I made. Should you decide to paint some, use your imagination and just have fun. You cannot make a mistake when you do your own thing. And it’s fun to create something that is one of a kind, all your own design. Just have fun! Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....Working on Easter and having lots of fun!!! Oh! Happy Mardi Gras and Happy Valentine’s Day!!! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Tony’s Take

KANSAS CITY HAS TAYLOR, SAN FRANCISCO HAS TOM “Whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl,” said Tom, “they will have performed bravely.” This is an example of a Tom Swifty, a pun in an adverb form that had a long run in my older childhood. Tom Swifties were the invention of Willard Espy (and no, he never won the ESPN trophy of the same name) who read the collection of Tom Swift adventure books (think Tom Sawyer with worse writing and an excess of adverbs). A clever and witty word smith, Espy began tinkering with the excess use of adverbs in the Swifty series. The collection has grown into the thousands and the classic Swifties are myriad: “I dropped the toothpaste”, he said, crestfallenly, “I wish Bing Crosby will bring that other comedian with him,” she said, hopefully. “All the names on these Paris street signs are in French,” he moaned, ruefully. “I just passed my graduation test,” she said, finally. Enough. Tom Swifties may not be making a comeback but the Niners needed something to counteract the alleged love nest of one Travis Kelce of the Chiefs and his possible partner, the one and only Taylor Swift. If you haven’t heard of Taylor, well, she’s the star of a credit card commercial and sings a bit. She could probably buy the Kansas City NFL franchise, I say, Swiftly, but she at least appears to be tethered to the attraction of the Chief’s All Pro receiver, who moves rather swiftly himself down the field and into position to catch passes from his All Pro quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, I note, homely. Whew! From puns to pundit. Kansas City will depend on its Mahomes to Kelce connections and a stout defense to win their fourth Super Bowl and third in the past five years while the 49ers will rely chiefly (sigh) on a more powerful offensive scheme and crunch time defense to win their sixth Lombardi Trophy and the first in 29 years. For my part, I hope the 49ers can win the game and secure the Lombardi, convincingly. While Taylor and her tight end boyfriend, Kelce, can embrace tightly at the end of the game as Travis considers retirement from pro football and I can end this pun fest.....finally. -0-

PLANNING YOUR FUTURE GARDEN

Whether you are an experienced gardener, or plan to plant your first this year, ade-quate preparation is key. Today I am going to present steps you can take now for a successful future.

By creating a gardening plan before purchasing, you can set realistic goals and not overspend on unnecessary items. Begin Heirloom Tomatoes by choosing the plants you want. For extra fun and challenge, consider new plants or plant varieties. For example, heirloom flower and vegetable varieties offer a unique assort-ment of colors and flavors. Do keep in mind this tends to be at the expense of pest and disease resistance. Another option is to integrate sustainable methods into your garden, such as the use of composting or chemical pesticide alternatives. Once you have an idea, determine the number of needed seed packets, and purchase your seeds. This guarantees even if there is a later shortage of a certain variety, you will still have the seeds you want. It also ensures you have sufficient time to start seeds before transplanting, if necessary. Seeds can be purchased through a garden center, a seed catalog, or online. Store seed display racks have reliable standard seeds but likely won’t have specialty varieties. Catalogs offer a wide arrange of seed varieties and allow the purchase of varieties that ripen at differing times. Planting this way spaces out your garden’s harvest over a longer period of time. Online seed sources have a wide selection and provide an indication of whether the seed is currently available. Online options will also have the most newly ob-tainable varieties. Apart from the plants themselves, there are other essential gardening considerations. Purchase necessary potting mix and fertilizer to ensure an adequate supply at time of use. Now is also a good time to inspect tools for rust and clean as needed. You can prevent future rust by placing a light coat of mineral oil or used motor oil on tool heads. Make sure you have an ample number of working gloves (your hands will thank you later). Me-chanic gloves are best suited for when you need the holding power, while latex or nitrile coat-ed cotton gloves are helpful for when your hands will get wet. Begin recording this year’s gardening plans in a notebook or online, which will assist with making informed decisions in the following years. No matter what your plans are for this year, the Extension Service is here to help. Search the Extension website, or contact your County’s Extension Agent, to find the advice you need. For more information on choosing what vegetable varieties to plant, see Extension Publication 3744, Variety Recommendations for Mississippi Vegetable Gardens

REFLECT AND MAKE PLANS FOR NEW GARDENING YEAR

Happy New Year! As we embark on a new year, gardeners and plant enthusiasts alike are gearing up for a fresh season of growth, color and the promise of a bountiful harvest. Whether you’re a seasoned green-thumb gardener or a novice with dreams of a flourishing garden, the new year is the perfect time to sow the seeds of your botanical aspirations. Let’s explore essential tips and resolutions to help you cultivate a vibrant and thriving garden in the coming months. Before you plunge hands first into the soil, take a moment to reflect on your successes and challenges of the past growing season. Consider what worked well and what could be improved. Use this reflection as a foundation for your gardening resolutions and plans for the new year. What do you hope to achieve with your garden this year? Whether it’s enhancing curb appeal, growing your own vegetables, creating a haven for pollinators or simply enjoying a more colorful landscape, clearly define your goals. Setting specific objectives will guide your plant choices and gardening activities. I always like to make the new year an opportunity to diversify my garden. If you feel like trying something new, explore new plant varieties, colors and textures to add interest and complexity to your outdoor space. Consider incorporating native plants that are well-suited to your region. This promotes biodiversity and supports the local ecosystems. Another preparation to make is to develop a planting calendar tailored to your local climate and growing zone. Research the optimal times for planting different types of plants, considering frost dates, temperature fluctuations and seasonal changes. This strategic approach makes it possible for you to create a garden that remains in a constant state of bloom and productivity. Healthy soil is the foundation for a thriving garden; be sure to conduct a soil test to assess its composition and nutrient levels. Based on the results, amend your soil with nutrients and organic matter such as compost or wellrotted manure. Healthy soil provides the necessary nutrients and structure for plants to flourish. Consider making a commitment to incorporate some sustainable practices in your garden. You can reduce your environmental footprint by composting kitchen and garden waste, using organic fertilizers or minimizing the use of chemical pesticides.

FOSTERING WITH THE LASPCA Are you an avid animal lover and looking for a rewarding way to give back to the homeless animals in your community? Then we at the Louisiana SPCA are looking for you to join our Foster Program as a foster parent for our animals in need of a loving temporary home. Fostering is one of the key pillars of our shelter that aids in healing the homeless animals we care for daily. Becoming a foster to one of our animals allows that animal to grow outside of the shelter. As much as we care for the animals at our shelter, it can still be a stressful environment for them to stay in for long periods of time. Even short periods of time like over a holiday, for a day, or just a weekend can help offer enrichment for the animal. Nothing compares to the feeling of a home for an animal that has been without one. Animals learn to thrive with human interaction, especially if they are considered timid and nervous at the shelter. Forming a bond with their foster parent can assist in letting their guard down so that we can see their true personality shine! Once we get a better understanding of who they truly are, we can match them with the best adopter. Understanding if they prefer their independence, enjoy playing with other dogs, don’t mind young children, or are comfortable sharing their home with cats are all important factors that can help them be adopted. We rely on fosters to note those behaviors and to take all the cute pictures they can so that we can show potential adopters their best side! We have a variety of fostering opportunities available that you can sign up for. Kitten Krewe, bottle babies, medical, and behavioral fostering are all options to choose from. Kitten Krewe is for our kittens that are too small for the adoption floor but can eat food on their own. Bottle babies refer to kittens or puppies who need a foster to feed them from a bottle until they are big enough to eat on their own. Medical fosters are for those animals who have medical conditions that need to be healed or tended to before they can become adopted. In some cases they may become adoptable but still need medical care and will heal best in a foster home. Behavior fosters work with animals that need help learning to socialize with humans and will benefit from being in a quiet home for their personality to come out. If you have never fostered before, there is no need to worry because you will be matched with a seasoned foster mentor. Anytime you have a question or simply need support, your foster mentor will be able to guide you in the right direction. Our foster veterinary technician will also be in contact with you to make sure your animal is getting their proper medications and is on the correct diet. You will also be in contact with our amazing foster coordinators that will help match you with the right animal to foster. There is a whole time behind you to make sure that you and your foster animal succeed. No matter what kind of fostering you sign up for, you would be making an impact on the homeless animals of your community. To learn more about our foster care program or to sign up to become a foster, visit our website at www.louisianaspca.org/foster. -0-
