Tony’s Take
She was such a small thing when we brought her home that mid-December day. Katie was Hilda’s and my second child, named after her paternal grandmother and middle name was taken from her maternal step grandmother. She had an older brother, Alan, the first of our two children. Both were adopted in Shreveport and came into our lives in the Swinging 70’s, a relatively carefree time between the social and political changes of the 60’s and prior to the Internet coming along in the ’80’s with cellphones to match. It was the beginning of the unraveling of American thought processes that had been forged during the country’s first two centuries.
Katie was a contented child except when she slept. Many a morning would find either her mother or me looking at her empty crib. Somewhere is the house would be Katie ,who had climbed out during the night, exploring the house our playing with our dogs, Linus and Tanya. She had a normal childhood and seemed to take life as it came her way, like the time when she stared down our neighbor’s Doberman Pinscher who had broken free and was on a beeline, headed straight towards our four-year old toddler. Katie remained calm and still, even as the dog stopped inches in front of her to avoid knocking her down. The Doberman paused, licked her once on the face and ran back to its home. Katie never crieflinched and when my heart returned to my chest from my throat, I realized how stable and trusting a daughter we had.
She was straight out of the Reader’s Digest. She played, sang and ran, competing in cheerleading, track and soccer in high school. She rarely dated but wound up marrying her high school sweetheart 15 years after her high school graduation. She loved Doc Martens and Alanis Morissette and, isn’t it ironic, her Dad loved Alanis as well and I served as the chaperone for Katie and a group of her friends when we attended a ’90’s Morissette concert at UNO. I had a ball singing along with the girls and none of them were grossed out or embarrassed.
Katie didn’t go off to college but experienced a two-week journey to Europe, visiting France, Spain, Italy and England. She began working from as a teenager at 15, a bond that was strengthened as we Scorpions shared the same November 21st birthday. Like many kids of her generation, she had her post-high school growing pains featuring the bouts and doubts of leaving her teen years while emerging as a woman. She had a first marriage and it ended like so many first marriages do It produced her first child, Kaleigh, now 22.
Katie and Postal Plus grew together, a business started and built by my wife, Hilda. Over the years, the social and business relations formed by she and her mother turned Postal Plus intoSlidell’s most trusted and client-centric business of its kind. Hilda started taking partial retirement about seven years ago and watched as Katie grew as a woman and mother, raising Kaleigh and then Millie, her younger daughter, essentially by herself while her husband continues his work overseas for an international corporation, coming home twice a year for extended time with his family.
Katie and I stayed close during these years, but in a contentious way. We were oil and water on many issues but not at work, where she remained a dutiful daughter which continues to this day. Last year, after several starts and stops, Katie decided she was ready to take the reins of Postal Plus. Her maturation was slow at first but as with any new child or venture, the excitement grew along with the responsibility and decision-making. Katie’s genuine relationships with her clients has made her a stronger, more confident, more concerned adult, a big reason folks come to Postal Plus as they did when Hilda created the same relationships during the company’s first 20 years.

Now Postal Plus will be moving to its fourth location in Slidell in its 26-year existence, but really, Postal Plus is going home. 3805 Pontchartrain Drive is where the business began in 1997 but was forced to relocate after Katrina flooded the store in 2005. Katie’s contracted for a space that will give her what she desires in design, convenience and customer satisfaction in the late spring/early summer version of Postal Plus. She’s entered a new chapter of her life now, one that has notably changed her but also vastly opened up her relationship with me. What could have devolved into jagged little pill of a father/daughter relationship has been stabilized and turned into more of a concerned partnership as her mother and I continue to age and fight the deterioration aspects of growing older. She’s still cat-like but has begun to purr a lot more these days. Uninvited is turning into Thank You. And although she is head over feet with this move, she still needs some financial backup. So, as it is with her mother, we find Katie’s hand in my pocket for just a little while longer. You’ve got kids. You oughta know.
(Editor’s Note: We wanted to have some fun with this story and Alanis Morissette’s body of work allowed us to use some of her bestknown singles and biggest album to be integrated into the narrative. We hope you’re smiling.)

TIMELY ADVICE ON AZALEAS
Now that azalea plants have finished their big spring bloom it’s now time to perform a few maintenance steps so they can look amazing for the rest of the year. Whether you grow indica azaleas, native azaleas, Robin Hill azaleas, or encore azaleas, there are always a few things to do that help with their appearance and overall health.
Pruning is the first thing that most think of when “maintaining” their azalea plants. That is because you see immediate results and you get to use cutting tools. Its time to pull out those hand pruners, bypass loppers, and pruning saws from the tool shed. Inspect your tools to make sure they work properly. Sharp blades make clean cuts and clean cuts heal faster. Make it a habit to sharpen the blades on cutting tools prior to each use.
When making pruning cuts on azalea plants, there a few guidelines to follow. Pruning needs to be done as soon as the spring flowering period is over. Other azalea types, especially the re-blooming types, set flower buds constantly and can be pruned as needed during the summer months. Indica Azaleas are a little different and produce next year’s flower buds 6-8 weeks after the spring bloom. Make it easy and prune all azaleas in the landscape at this time.
First thing should be to look for broken, diseased, or damaged stems. Remove damaged pieces by following the stem back to where it originates and cut it out. Next, look for those long shoots that seem to skyrocket above the plant. This can be done using hedge sheers, but I find you can get a much more natural look when removing these shoots individually with hand pruners. You can remove 25 to 35% of the total plant during this step. Think about how tall the bush should be in its current situation to help guide you during the process. Prune lower that the ideal height to allow the plant to grow into your desired sized. For overgrown plants that need more than 25 to 35% removed, aim to accomplish in multiple years to mitigate plant stress.
Fertilizing should always be applied directly after pruning for immediate use by the plant. Plants respond to pruning by growing, making it important for the plant to grow in a fertile soil. If a soil test analysis is available, look for deficiencies and supplement with an appropriate soil amendment. In situations where there is no soil report to use, then use one of the general azalea, camellia, and rhododendron fertilizers at the labeled rate. Once the fertilizer or amendment product has been added, water it either by hand, with the irrigation system, or time the application before a natural rain event.
While pruning and fertilizing may be some of the more popular maintenance steps related to azaleas, pest management is needed form time to time. Azalea Lace Bug damage shows up during the summer months as discolored leaf surfaces with insect signs on the lower surfaces. Red-headed Azalea Caterpillars show up later in the year but can devour foliage at an inopportune time. Both can be managed using a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid. Just make sure to read and follow the pesticide label on whatever product you decide to use. Azalea Leaf Gall show up in the spring as weird tumor like growths on new leaf tissue. It is caused by a fungal organism and happens quite often in humid climates. Collecting these strange growths and throwing them out with the trash will reduce inoculum, preventing reinfection, and it’s our top recommendation on prevention. If you see something strange going on with an azalea plant and its not described in this article, feel free to reach out and request help from your local extension office.
Hi, Everyone!
Hope you are enjoying this beautiful Easter Sunday! After all the running and cooking, I am now sitting down enjoying some “me” time. The day has been so beautiful. I enjoyed driving down to Buras this morning almost at the crack of dawn to deliver flowers to the cemetery. Stopped and saw a couple friends for a quick visit. Then back to Gretna to put some ribs on the pit. So here I sit trying to decide what I was going to share with you today. I had painted something really cute, but decided that could wait til next time.

I thought I would show you one of the bouquets that I made. I really liked this one more than the rest as it was not a really planned design. I basically used flowers from two bouquets that were purchased at the grocery store. I love the color of the roses and wanted something to bring out their beauty more and not hide it. The roses are actually a peachy rust color. I think the yellows and greens and the slight burgundy color of the other flowers did the trick. I love this bouquet! I certainly hope those who received it liked it as much as I do.
Now onto other things. My youngest grandson will be celebrating his 25th birthday next week, and going with his sister, and their parents to tour one of the colleges she has been accepted to. High School Graduation in May, her and my daughter’s birthday in June! When will I find the time to paint???? Ugh, you know I will work it in when I am not at work.
Well that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....I am going to start on it now! This will be a fun one!
Sincerely,
Paula JohnsonCASH PAID - Boats, motors and trailers, Running or not. 228-596-9582 or 228-806-9382.

Well, how quickly some in the Tiger Nation turn on a successful coach! Yes, I am talking about Jay Johnson and his baseball team. Sure, losing 2 of 3 against Mississippi State was surprising, but the Bulldogs have since given both #6 Florida & #7 Texas A&M tough weekends with each seeing the Dawgs take 1 of 3 against them as well.
Speaking of Florida, the Gators were one catch away from losing 2 of 3 to LSU instead of winning the series. Now combine those two weekends to the Bayou Bengals just getting swept by Arkansas although just losing 3 games by a total of 6 runs with one of them being in extra innings due to an uncostly error. Sure, this team is on shaky ground sitting at just 2-7 in SEC play but still 20-9 overall. While Arkansas won its 17th consecutive home game to break the record win streak at the stadium that has been the Razorbacks’ home for 29 seasons. Arkansas’ 1997 team won 16 in a row the year after the stadium opened.
However, this was by far the toughest part of the conference schedule that the Tigers will face. Sure, they have to host Vanderbilt (23-6, 6-3) before traveling to Knoxville to take on Tennessee (24-5, 5-4) in the next few weeks, but this is where we will really see who this LSU team really is all about. Is this the team who had dominant pitching and nonstop hitting from a year ago, No! But no other team in the history of NCAA Baseball has had that collection of talent where their top two players go 1st and 2nd in the MLB Draft! This team is still hitting .289 as a team to go along with a bit of a surprising team ERA of 4.24.
This is one of the times where you must take a wait and see approach. This team needs some patience and trust in the head coach to make the right decisions. Johnson already made a good move by sitting major under achieving Paxton Kling. The hitting needs to find a good compatibility while the pitching needs to be more consistent. Either the starters are solid, and the relievers give up big hits or the starters are rocky, and the relievers shut things down only to see late inning errors destroy any chance of a comeback.

No matter the concerns, we must let the process play out and let the coach make the decisions necessary to improve. He has shown the ability to not play favorites and push the right buttons to do what is necessary to secure a successful season. He is not only one of the best coaches in the LSU athletic department but one of the best in the country.
This program is still the defending national champs and having to replace 2 of the greatest players in LSU history and the best pitching/hitting duo in the program’s history. If we do not win another title, it will not be the end of the world as there have only been 5 teams to win back-to-back titles and has not happened since 2011. Not to mention, the SEC has won 5 of the last 6 national titles with 4 of those titles coming against other teams from the same conference.
Those who do not understand the game would have thought that winning last year was an easy thing to do with that talent. The problem with that mindset is you need a leader to reign in those expectations and be able to deliver on them. That team could have easily imploded, over the intense pressure, but they did not. They took the shots and kept getting back up and ended the year hoisting the trophy. The current Tigers are not on that level, but they darn sure could gel at the right time and make a long run to the College World Series! All we must do is trust the process and the head coach and let the man do his job while drowning out the outside negativity and noise.

EXPECTED “SWARMS”
As we move into Spring we begin preparing for the “swarms” of termites we endure each year around this time. Termites can be an extremely annoying pest in more ways than one. We will get more into that a little further down in this article but, first, we will briefly discuss another insect I’ve been getting a few calls about, periodical cicadas and the 13-year, Great Southern Brood!
Periodical cicadas spend most of their lives underground as nymphs feeding on the roots of hardwood trees. They are here every year, but they are only noticed during years when adults emerge. Let’s begin the life cycle with the adults, which live about three or four weeks. The males sing to attract a female, the females deposit their eggs in pencil-sized twigs, and the adults then die, leav-ing the eggs of the next generation to carry on the cycle. The eggs hatch in about six weeks, and the tiny nymphs fall to the ground, dig into the soil, and search for a tree root to feed on.
After 13 years of feeding on sap from tree roots, the nymphs move near the soil surface in preparation for emergence. When they sense the time is right, based on soil temperature and other cues, the nymphs will emerge, leaving ½ inch diameter holes in the ground; crawl a few feet up a tree trunk; molt one last time, leaving their empty nymphal skins attached to the tree; and move higher into the trees to enjoy their brief life as adults.
Periodical cicadas are expected to emerge in about 17 Mississippi counties in the northeast region of the state with emergence beginning in late April. But brood XIX, also known as the “Great Southern Brood,” is the largest of all broods and will also occur in parts of many other states: Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, and Oklahoma. So, what about us on the Coast? Other than the occasional annual cicada you may see, or hear most likely, coastal counties never have periodical cicadas. So, don’t be overly concerned about a cicada invasion down this far south. We should be just fine.
Termites, on the other hand, will be a much different story. Three major species of termites occur in Mississippi: eastern subterranean termites, Formosan termites, and southeastern drywood termites. All three species damage build-ings, but their distribution varies within the state. Eastern subterranean termite is a native species that occurs throughout Mississippi, as well as through much of the eastern United States. Formosan termites are not native to the United States, but now occur in portions of 25 Mississippi coun-ties and are continuing to spread. Southeastern drywood termites are also native but have the most restricted distribution; they regularly occur only in the three coastal counties.
Eastern subterranean termite swarmers are about 3/8 inch long, including the wings; the wings are white or translucent and their bodies are dark brown to black. Swarming usually occurs in the morning, and most swarms occur in the spring, though timing varies considerably depending on location. In the coastal counties, swarms may occur as early as late January with peak swarming activity in late February to early April, but swarming usually occurs from April through June in northernmost counties.
Formosan termite swarmers are about ½ inch long, including the wings, and are tan to light brown. In the southern portion of the state, Formosan termites usually swarm in late April through mid-May, usually within a week or so of Mother’s Day, but swarming is delayed into June in the central part of the state. Swarming occurs at night, usually at or shortly after dusk, and swarmers are strongly attracted to lights. In heavily infested areas, the number of swarmers coming to lights can be so large that they become a serious nuisance, resulting in delays of athletic activi-ties, music events, and other outdoor nighttime activities. Fortunately, swarm season lasts only a few weeks.
Southeastern drywood termite swarmers normally swarm in May and June, with most swarms occurring at dusk. Swarmers are yellow to light brown and about 7/16 inches long, including the wings. Southeastern drywood termite swarmers are superficially similar to Formosan termite swarmers, both in general appearance and the time of year when swarms occur. Infestations of drywood termites are relatively uncommon, even on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and dry-wood termite colonies are much smaller than those of subterranean termites.
Due to the nature of termite infestations, I recommend hiring a reputable pest control company for treating ter-mites that invade the home and other structures. For information on termites and treatments, refer to publication 2568, Protect Your House From Termites, on the Extension website extension.msstate.edu.

MOSQUITO CONTROL AROUND THE HOME
As we move into warmer temperatures and find ourselves outside more of-ten now that winter has mostly subsided, we are going to start encountering mosqui-toes much more often unfortunately. Below are a few simple steps that you can take to help reduce the risk of being bitten and to help possibly reduce the population of mosquitoes around the home.
• Remove any standing water around your home to reduce mosquito breeding. In areas where standing water is unavoidable, the use of “Bti Dunks” (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis strain) can be helpful and safe for pets and other ani-mals.
• Always wear an insect repellant containing an EPA-registered active ingredi-ent, such as DEET, when outdoors. Be sure to use a product that is labelled for skin use and not a clothing use as increased active ingredient concentrations can be harmful and not for on-the-skin use.
• If you are allergic to DEET, or would prefer to use a different product, there is an alternative containing the active ingredient Picaridin that is also effective for the deterrence of mosquitos and other disease carrying insects.
• Use of Thermacell or other insect repellent devices can be beneficial in certain instances in small areas
• Wear loose-fitting long-sleeved tops and long pants.
• Avoid being outdoors during the early morning and early evening when mos-quitoes are most active when possible
