TORNADO ALLEY
I am a self-proclaimed “storm chaser” of sorts. Not like the craziness of the characters played by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt in the acclaimed “Twister” movie but one awe-struck by the tornado created in “The Wizard of Oz”, still considered to be the most realistic special effects of all time. The hypnotic and terrifying tornado created by MGM stuck in my mind years before I became a reporter, then a News Director. But no chance ever came my way to see a real tornado or the in-person aftermath of their destruction and capricious nature as I was working in California or Wyoming, where twisters are as scarce as a bayou in both those states.
I had a rare opportunity in 1978 when an unheard-of December tornado struck Shreveport and Bossier City in northwest Louisiana just before two in the morning on a Sunday. Dr. Ted Fujita had traveled to Shreveport to observe the damage that took the lives of two sisters in Bossier City and rate the tornado’s power on the scale he had invented and was named after him, the F scale, rating the storms from 0 to 5, weakest to strongest. I had brought a copy of a National Geographic from 1971 that showed Dr. Fujita creating tornadoes in a laboratory at the University of Chicago. I met him and asked him to autograph his picture and he was flattered as he told me no one had ever asked him for an autograph before.
Dr, Fujita’s stories about tornadoes fascinated me, especially when he told me he had never even seen a tornado, let alone been in one’s path. I asked him if he thought Dr. Richter had ever been through an earthquake or if Saffir or Simpson had ever been through a hurricane and he and I laughed about the irony of the question.
Dr. Fujita finally did see a tornado four years after our meeting and six years before he died. And like Dr. Fujita, I had never seen one…. not even last Wednesday’s tornadoes that tore up South Slidell. But Wednesday did find me being hustled into a first story safe room at a local hospital as the tornado warnings rang out in Slidell.
After I left, I saw the destruction caused by what must have been a series of F-1 to F-3 tornadoes. I had, as a newsman, seen the aftermath of huge twisters in Tuscaloosa in 2011 and in Xenia, Ohio in 1974, where an F-5 had simply erased a mile-wide swath through that southern Ohio city in April of that year. And except for a funnel cloud about 14 years ago in Slidell, which bounced over and damaged the building I’m in today, I hadn’t experienced the personal damage that these violent storms can create.
April 10th’s damage was much more personal to me. The beginning of the most violent of the twisters that hit Slidell, probably a borderline F-3 that hit town, had to have literally dropped down and eviscerated the shopping center sign where our businesses are relocating this spring, missing our newly-leased bays by less than 100 feet. It destroyed the roof of an automotive shop about 150 feet away, continuing its path across both sides of Pontchartrain Drive, removing most of the roof of another place we once occupied at 3401 Pontchartrain Drive and ended its trip along our highway, leaving severely damaging businesses and apartment buildings in their wake, including those belonging to clients of mine.
Remembering Dr. Fujita’s lessons and having lived in tornado-obsessed Oklahoma for a couple of years, it appeared that at least three tornadoes hit our city. Fortunately, no one was killed or sustained more than minor injuries. There were several downbursts as well, one hitting three trees and damaging my daughter’s truck. The bigger tornadoes hit Old Spanish Trail where the destruction included two large apartment complexes, a church and one of the biggest construction companies in town.
But the good news is that this city, like so many South Louisiana communities, had the experience, the skills and the heart to spring into action even as the storms moved out of the metro area and into Mississippi. That’s what responding to hurricane aftermaths provides for cities like Slidell. Some businesses will be weeks or longer before they are ready to resume business as usual but by the time you read this, power should be restored to all of the affected areas and perhaps as many of half of the shops and stores will be back in operation in some way or another. Homes will be repaired or rebuilt. And most of Slidell will have at least a quick breather before the next hurricane season comes in June. -0-

GOING HOME
Home is where the heart is but for our family businesses, home was 3805 Pontchartrain Drive in Slidell. For eight years, the predecessor of this publication, Bargains Plus and other publications, either developed their reputations, reached their growth potential or began as a totally new entity. Starting with two suites, we expanded to three. Then came August 29th, 2005.
Like thousands of us, Katrina relocated our offices with 4 1/2 feet of lake water and we were forced to move several times, once for a brief stay on West Gause, once for about a year back on Pontchartrain a half mile from our first location at 3805 and then to Olde Towne, where we purchased a law office where we have now resided for the past 17 years.
Other ventures came and went at 155 Robert Street, including Enjoy!, our food magazine, about eight years ago. Our foundation was Bargains Plus, then the name changes as social media and the internet along with email required them. But it was always Postal Plus from day one, October 15, 1997, launching my wife’s brick and mortar enterprise in the face of stiff competition in the shipping and mailing businesses. Mailboxes Etc changed to the UPS Store and several other independent stores opened, or were opened, on Gause, Pontchartrain, Olde Spanish Trail and several other locations during the years following Katrina. Postal Plus has seen ten of them come and go since 1997.
Postal Plus was up to the challenge because of who ran their operation. Hilda, my wife, then my daughter, Katie, were intertwined with the business, creating value and goodwill and willing to take the extra mile or give the extra smile in appreciation of the business. Close relations were formed over the years as virtually every city office and hundreds of Slidell and area businesses came by on at least a weekly basis. Small enterprises came to Postal Plus for a budget startup and a business address, affordable shipping and mailing options and the experience of making sure clients remained friends instead of merely customers.
When Katie took the business ownership in January, her inner business woman opened up. Looking at an opportunity to return to
continued from Going Home, on pp 2
an area that had been where her adult business life began, Katie is making choices and decisions formed from her years on the job. Finding a perfect space back at…..you guessed it……3805 Pontchartrain…..Katie made the decision to go back to the same shopping center where she and her mother began. She’ll have the space and the layout to better serve her client base, which is concentrated in South Slidell.
The move will come this spring as Postal Plus’s build out began this month. Our other ventures will move as well but the focus will be on Postal Plus. No one in the Slidell market understands the shipping and mailing business like Postal Plus and with the changes by the Post Office regarding requirements for opening a mailbox, no one in the independent postal market has the experience to handle it as well as Katie’s team.
Postal Plus has been blessed over the past 26 1/2 years and the blessings are mutual between them and the community. Yes, you can go back home again. See you at the house fairly soon.

CHINESE FRINGE TREE (Chionanthus retusus)
Originating from China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, the Chinese Fringe Tree, Chionanthus retusus, is a staple in traditional southern landscape design. It adds a premium aesthetic to the area with its shiny dark green leaves, lightly striped bark, and showy white flowers. Recently, several trees in the Mandeville-Covington area went into full bloom and stirred up interest amongst the gardening public. Let’s take a deep dive into this showstopper of a plant.
The plant is a small ornamental tree growing upwards of 20 ft and between 15-20 ft wide. It displays a deciduous habit with leaves emerging oppositely down the stem in late winter and early spring. The bark offers aesthetic interest with its light color and exfoliating striations that give a striped effect. In early spring, usually around March, white flowers hang in 4-inch-long panicles. These fragrant flowers emerge from the tips of new spring shoots and completely cover the tree creating an impressive snow-like appearance. These characteristics make Chinese Fringe Tree a great plant for use in specimen, focal, or accent style plantings. Excellent way to add aesthetic value to decks, patios, and courtyards.
Chinese Fringe Tree is tolerant of many light conditions but perform best in sunnier areas. Plants in heavy shade will result in poor flower production. It is also adaptive to a wide range of soil conditions but performs best in a well-drained soil with a good amount of organic matter. It prefers a slightly acidic soil condition (below pH of 6). Conduct a soil test to determine current soil pH and follow recommendations on lowering or raising if needed. Water deeply after planting and supplement irrigation water during the first couple of years. Refer to the soil report to learn of nutrient deficiencies. A fertilizer program can be implemented at the start of year two and should focus on applying amendments that add supply deficient nutrients. Aim to buildup levels of phosphorus and potassium so that the only nutrient added each spring is nitrogen.
Chinese Fringe Tree is popular when it’s in bloom. In the current market, you can find container grown plants for sale, but you may need to expand your search a bit. This is an excellent plant for our region but it’s not the easiest to propagate. Most nursery people are growing out seedlings into 2- and 3-year-old sellable trees. This takes some time and fringe tree seedlings don’t grow very straight, requiring more room than other similar type trees. So, even if it takes a little time to find a plant, you’ll forget about it next spring when it blooms and all your neighbors start asking about it!
Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com
I hope you all have enjoyed the beautiful weekend we had. It was so nice to be outside working in the yard cutting grass, planting flowers, and just enjoying the cool breeze and sunshine. Yep, I spent all day Saturday piddling in the yard. Sunday I did some painting. I am proud to say I am now two projects ahead! That is a MAJOR accomplishment for me!
Let me tell you a little about the piece I am sharing with you today. I took a March Madness class, which was absolutely Fabulous! I love everyone of the five pieces we did. This was the first one. I had so much fun painting this Highland Cow. The background technique was not as hard as I thought it would be. Streaking on the different colors of paint for the long hair is a process, gotta make sure the paint is thin enough to flow evenly. And I just adore those drowsy eyes, like she doesn’t have a care in this world! The leaves are also painted on but the flowers are actually from the scrapbooking section at Hobby Lobby. Yall, 3D is the in- thing this year where crafts are concerned. I did another one like this, the only exception is I added 3 bees flying around and beside the cow’s head. I really did like one. But it walked out my door pretty quickly when my granddaughter saw it. This would look so cute in the center of a grapevine door wreath surrounded by sunflowers. It would even look cute dressing up a cabinet door in the kitchen. The places this cutie could grace are endless. Just let your imagination run wild.

TIGERS REMAIN UNIMPRESSIVE, ANEMIC
LSU’s disastrous run through the SEC continued last weekend as the Tennessee Vols were the latest team to dissect the inappropriately named Tigers, in the second three-game sweep of the Tigers of the season. This year’s version of last year’s national champions is limited to two or three position players and a couple of better than average starting pitchers.
If this is what having ten left-handed pitchers on the staff does for LSU, then let’s return to the championship days of maybe two or three at the most. And let’s find a shortstop and hitting outfielders as well.
Two bright spots for the Tigers: they still get to play the other two SEC Tiger teams, Auburn and Missouri, the only squads more pathetic in SEC play than LSU, plus the Grambling State Tigersnearly all winnable games even with this roster - along with UNO and Nichols State. LSU could conceivably go 9 and 0 in this stretch, before facing Texas A&M and Alabama with a single game against Northwestern State and concluding the regular season with a home matchup series against Ole Miss.
But make no mistake about it. This is not a reloading or even a rebuilding season for LSU. It’s a cleanup process following a series of F-2 sports tornadoes in the form of Arkansas and Tennessee with downbursts from Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Florida. Maybe Governor Landry can declare these guys a disaster area.
Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.......I am seeing things in 3D and having lots of fun! Don’t forget to check out my page on FB (We Can Do That Arts & Crafts) and see what I have been doing. You can even order one of my painted pieces if you would like.
Sincerely,

Look for the SEC to have at least two potential national championship teams in Omaha in June from among Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas A&M coming out of the Regionals and Super Regionals. It would be the fifth league team to win it all in Omaha in the past six College World Series to do so following Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and LSU. Other SEC baseball champions have included Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina. But “no Tigers, burning brightly”, in Nebraska this spring I’m afraid.

GREENHOUSE TOMATO PRODUCTION
With the right technique, growing tomatoes in the greenhouse can be a rewarding experience. Today I am going to mention some common considerations when growing greenhouse tomatoes. The first consideration is what variety to plant in the greenhouse. Choosing low quality seed or a varie-ty ill fitted to your production situation will have a major effect on your growing success. Greenhouse tomato varieties are suited for the growing conditions specific to the greenhouse. These include options such as the Trust, Match, Switch, or Blitz varieties. Greenhouse variety seeds can be purchased from a greenhouse supply catalog or from seed companies directly. Place extra seed in unopened or zip-locked containers in the freezer to store for future use.
Reducing production to one fruit bearing stem promotes more uniform, larger, better-quality fruit. This can be done by removing all lateral shoots, also called suckers, from the plant. Leave one or two of the small-est suckers at the top of the plant, as this will provide a backup terminal if the plant becomes damaged and the terminal breaks off.
Tomato flowers are considered “perfect flowers”, meaning they have both male and female parts with-in each flower. Pollination of the female flower part is required to have fruit set. There are several ways that pollination can be impeded. Examples include hot or cold temperatures, drought, high humidity, nutrient defi-ciencies or toxicities, and insufficient pollen transfer. For pollination, the best temperature range is 70 to 82 °F and a relative humidity of 70 percent. Commercial producers should use an electric pollinator to ensure good fruit set, but this is probably not necessary for hobby gardeners.
Blossom-end rot is likely the most common problem in both garden and greenhouse tomato production. It is a physiological disorder caused by a lack of adequate calcium in developing fruit. While the cause is low calci-um, drought is often the driving factor. Without a continuous supply of wa-ter, root hairs can dry out which limits the amount of calcium absorbed by the plant. The best solution is to prevent root hair damage through con-sistent water application. One misconception about greenhouse production is that there won’t be insect or disease prob-lems. In fact, the opposite is true as the green-house environment is particularly suitable for propagating pests. Examples of greenhouse tomato diseases include tomato spotted wilt virus, Botrytis gray mold, and anthracnose. The worst insect pest is the whitefly. Once a disease or insect is introduced, it can become a consistent problem. Because of this, ensure disease or insect issues do not get out of control. If a pest problem does occur, reach out to your county agent if you need assistance.
For information on insect and disease management for greenhouse tomatoes, see Extension Publication 1861, Greenhouse Tomatoes: Pest Management in Mississippi.

GROWING HERBS IN CONTAINERS
There’s not a prettier sight than seeing those long racemes hang-ing down with purple, violet, or white showy flowers during the spring, cascading down vines wrapped around trees, fences, or other obstacles. Wisteria is a beautiful plant still grown extensively as an ornamental. But it is also very invasive and listed as a Mississippi Invasive which includes Congongrass, Chinese privet, Torpedograss and many others.
The problem with wisteria lies in its growth habit. Once established, wisteria can be difficult to eradi-cate. By climbing into the canopy of trees or plants, it can shade them out, impairing those plants from effec-tively growing. Over time, wisteria will climb and twine around other plants, eventu-ally shading and girdling native plants. Wisteria can be a problem in fence rows, for-ests, and landscapes, killing or disfiguring desirable trees. Wisteria forms dense thickets, replacing the surrounding vegetation. Although these thickets may provide habitat for certain wildlife, they are a difficult barrier for human and animal activity. Wisterias are high-climbing vines reaching upward of 70 to 80 feet. In addition, wis-teria leaves, fruit, and seeds are toxic.
There are two species of wisteria that have escaped in the eastern United States: Chinese wisteria and Japanese wisteria. According to recent genetic analysis, these two species have produced fertile hybrids throughout the southeastern United States. Therefore, differentiation between the two species and the hybrid can be difficult. Both species are perennial, deciduous vines native to Asia. Chinese wisteria is native to China, while Japanese wisteria is native to Japan. Wisteria species and hybrids are not regulated in the United States or the Midsouth.
Since characteristics are similar, control methods are the same for Chinese, Japanese, and hybrid wisterias. Using products containing Glyphosate and Triclopyr work best for homeowners using the frill or cut stump method. Frill (also known as hack and squirt) requires a hatchet, machete, or ax to create an opening in the bark every 2 inches around the woody stem; the herbicide is applied in these openings. Cut stump appli-cations are made after severing the main stem. Apply herbicide to the remaining stump just inside the bark to prevent re-sprouting. Foliar ap-plications are effective when using a nonionic surfactant but be aware of surrounding foliage of wanted plant species. Please read and follow all label directions!
CELEBRATING NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK WITH THE LASPCA: MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR ANIMALS AND COMMUNITY
Welcome to National Volunteer Week, a time dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of volunteers worldwide. As we commemorate this week, we shine a spotlight on why volunteering with the Louisiana SPCA (LASPCA) can be a fulfilling and impactful experience, not just for the animals but for our entire community.
At LASPCA, we understand that helping homeless animals goes beyond adoption, although adopting a pet can be incredibly rewarding. Our organization thrives on the dedication, passion, and determination of each volunteer, who play a vital role in our daily operations and the success of our programs and services.
Becoming a volunteer at LASPCA is a straightforward process. The first step is to submit your application and participate in our online orientation. While there is a $40 fee associated with becoming a volunteer, which covers essential items like a leash, apron, t-shirt, name tag, safety whistle, and training materials, the experience and impact are priceless.
To join us as a volunteer, you must:
- Be 18 years or older to volunteer independently.
- If aged 16 or 17, obtain parent/guardian consent and follow our Buddy System guidelines.
- Commit to at least four hours of volunteer work each month.
There are diverse opportunities for volunteers to contribute, including:
1. **Dog Walking:**
Providing socialization, exercise, and enrichment to the dogs in our care through regular walks.
2. **Cat Socialization:**
Interacting with and playing with cats and kittens to enhance their shelter experience and human interaction skills.
3. **Photography:**
Capturing high-quality photos of our adoptable animals to showcase their personalities and increase adoption chances.
4. **Event Volunteering:**
Assisting at our offsite events, from greeting guests to handling animals, ensuring successful and enjoyable experiences.
5. **Fostering:**
Opening your home temporarily to animals in need, offering care, love, and support during their transition to finding permanent homes.
By volunteering with LASPCA, you become part of a community-driven effort to improve the lives of animals and promote responsible pet ownership. Together, we create meaningful connections and lasting impact. To kickstart your journey as a volunteer and register for orientation, visit www.louisianaspca.org/volunteer.
Join us during Volunteer Appreciation Week from April 17th to 23rd, and let’s make a difference together!
