Tony’s Take

LSU WOMEN’S SPORTS OUTDISTANCING LSU MEN’S SPORTS

The Tigers’ starting pitchers Luke Holman, Gage Jump and Thatcher Hurd had been so successful before Starkville that LSU rarely found themselves in situations where neither the middle relievers/spot starters nor the evolving late inning/closer slots caused concern and LSU is well on its way to creating a strong closer with sophomore right hander Gavin Guidry. But what lurked in the background was the lack of first tier SEC outfielders either in the field or at bat. Mississippi State exposed those weaknesses, along with others, such as mental mistakes and other shoddy plays in the field.

With ten lefties and ten right-handed pitchers, all healthy, the Tigers should be ready for any SEC series to either be swept or won, 2-1, by this powerhouse. But the Tigers are an inconsistent team, up and down at the plate and average power numbers at best, led by Hayden Travinski, , Tommy “Tank” White, Alex Millazo, Jared Jones and freshman Steven “Monster”Milam. No Dylan Crews here and only White shows any early season creds to return as an All American, still hitting smart and powerful and perhaps being the finest defensive third baseman in college baseball. There’s still most of the season to go but Johnson has a lot of work and experimentation to go before he can repeat as college’s national champions or even return to Omaha for that chance.

LSU basketball, too, shows inconsistency, especially in outside shooting and offensive boards. This squad will meander through a meaningless NIT tournament after a one and done in the SEC Championship series.

LSU’s women, however, have the country’s strongest field of winter and spring sports teams with the country’s only undefeated softball squad, a top ten gymnastics team and the defending national champions in ladies’ basketball, led by two all conference players and one All American. The Lady basketball Tigers show they still have a thin and not overly talented bench and have trouble making 3’s but continue to be among the nation’s finest squads defensively and on the boards. LSU gymnastics has been the most consistent women’s team in terms of winning and attracting top talent over the past five years and LSU ladies track is one of the standard bearers around the nation for three decades.

LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson thought he had a roster the way he’s been wanting it constructed in his third year with the addition of a plethora of left-handed pitchers and the deepest and most experienced catching staff in the nation. There was no Paul Skenes returning to Baton Rouge after the All American went pro last year but the versatility and health of the pitchers was the best it has been in Tigertown since well……maybe ever. These Tigers, the defending national champions, were ranked number two in the country when they were derailed by Mississippi State, losing two out of three to the Bulldogs and with two of those games not even close.
Back to LSU baseball. The SEC has produced the last four national champions in Florida, Mississippi State, Mississippi and LSU. #1 Arkansas seems to have the inside track for making it a fifth straight SEC/national title in 2024. #2 LSU, #4 Texas A&M, #5 Tennessee, #8 Florida and #9 Vanderbilt show the extraordinary strength of the league and #14 Alabama, #18 Auburn and #20 South Carolina give the SEC 45% of the top 20 teams in the nation. That doesn’t count either Ole Miss or Mississippi State and after what we heard from eastern Mississippi this past weekend, adding State should make it an an even 50% of the best baseball teams. Unless Johnson and his staff get very busy curing some of the obvious Tiger ills this March, the spring will be a rough experience for LSU. Johnson should be able to do this but he’d better hurry; Florida at Alex Box and Arkansas in Fayetteville are the next two league opponents and LSU could find themselves close to the bottom of the SEC West by April 1st . And that’s not an April Fool’s projection.
LOUISIANA IRISH-ITALIAN PARADE (METAIRIE) NOON

WEED ALERT: COMMON VETCH

A lot of people think of warm weather when they think of spring. It’s the season that directly follows winter so you can’t blame them. As we get closer and closer to spring some folks start noticing certain weeds in lawn and flowerbed situations that are growing and thriving in early spring weather patterns like cool nights, increasing day light, and increasing day temperatures. This is the peak season for a cool-season plant. It’s the same reason pansies, snapdragons, and petunias look like they are on steroids during this same time. Just like bedding plants and other annuals, weeds offer cool-season types that thrive during this time of year. One of the more common weeds that I am seeing now is common vetch and all of its pea-like flowers.

Common vetch, Vicia sativa, is an annual plant in the bean family, Fabaceae. This is an interesting family of plants because it includes trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants that can all be recognized by the seed pod made after flowering. So yeah, that means that water locust trees (Gleditsia aquatica), soybean plant (Glycine max), and common vetch (V. sativa) all share a common ancestor! Members of this family utilize mycorrhizal fungi to fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and convert it to plant available nitrogen (NO3) so that there is always a source of usable nitrogen within the root zone.

The plant itself is easy to identify due to its compound leaf and pea-like flower. The leaves of common vetch are made up of 5-6 pairs of leaflets and emerge alternately down the stem. Tendrils can be seen at the tips of leaves and provide a way for the plant to climb onto structures or nearby plants.

The flowers are pea-shaped and somewhat inconspicuous because they occur in leaf axils, the area between the stem and the petiole (stem of a leaf). The upper petal flares up because it’s wider and displays a notch at the tip. The lateral petals are more of an oval shape and can be a slightly darker color than the upper petal. The color of the flower can be various shades of purple or lavender. Sometimes a darker purple can appear as blue. Once flowers are pollinated a 1-3 inch seed pod forms, eventually turning black when mature.

This plant doesn’t always identify as a weed, a plant growing out of place. Organic and sustainable producers will use this plant as a cool season cover crop to help regenerate and maintain soil health. Naturalist minded folks enjoy the dainty growth habit and flower show of this plant treating it like a wildflower. Hunters will even add this plant to a fall winter wildlife food plot. These folks have no issue with it at all! However, sometimes weed pressure gets out of hand in a flower bed or home lawn and steps need to be taken.

To control this plant growing in a flower bed situation you can always hand pull. Common vetch has a weak taproot that tends to break off at soil level. Think about using an assisted weeder tool to help remove plants along with root systems. Also, look to hand pull as plants appear so you don’t get overwhelmed. For those situations, one might want help from a conventional insecticide. The only option in a flowerbed situation is glyphosate. It will need to be applied from a shielded sprayer because glyphosate is non-selective and will injure any plant with green leaves. Some folks get crafty and use a large sheet of cardboard to physical block desirable plant from any unintended spray drift. To control this plant in a lawn situation, start by growing healthy turfgrass. Take soil samples and add deficient plant nutrients via fertilizer. Provide supplemental irrigation during long stretches of drought. Under sufficient light conditions, all warm season turfgrasses should outcompete common vetch. Look to improve sunlight conditions in shadier areas of the lawn. Some situations may require you to expand a flowerbed or mulched area. Conventional control in a home lawn can be achieved via pre-emergent and post emergent herbicides. An application of dithiopyr (Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper II containing Dimension) in mid-September will reduce initial germination and an application of a 4-way herbicide (Weed B Gon Max for Southern Lawns or Fertilome Weed Free Zone) in late winter will get the rest.

Hi, Everyone!

Hope you all had a festive St. Patrick’s Day, even though it rained most of the day. I decided to stay at the house and do some painting. Today was the perfect day to paint.

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

My favorite Canadian artist designed this adorable little bunny. Of Course, I didn’t have the exact surface that she used so I had to dig in my stash. I think this piece of wood works well. And it was so much to paint! The first thing that I did with this piece was base the background with Whispering Turquoise, then I stencilled the entire background with warm white polka dots and shaded the edges with Stormy. Added the bunny, tulips and enjoyed my rainy day. Most of the colors used in this are all new colors from Deco Art. Some of the colors include Baby Duck (the yellow tulip), Stormy (the shading around the edge of the board), Salted Caramel (the shading on the bunny), and New Leaf (the highlight on the leaves. This one is for Easter, I will paint another one for Spring. I really enjoyed painting this.

What will be your next project? Mine.....I have a lot of prospects, so I haven’t really decided. But I Know it will be fun! I wish you all a very Happy Easter!!!

Well, so it ends! That is, the 24-game winning streak for the LSU Softball team. However, we will get to that small detail in a second. The same day that the streak ended, March Madness officially started with the announcement of the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournament brackets.

Of course, we see the LSU Tigers sitting at home again for this one but playing in the NIT while the Lady Tigers were disrespected in a way by only being a #3 seed but in a very tough, yet favorable bracket! The Tigers have a NET ranking of 8, went 28-5 and finished second to the No. 1 overall seed yet were on the 3 line for the third straight year. The committee under seeded LSU last year, too. But putting Iowa and LSU in each other’s path before the Women’s Final Four does set up a potential blockbuster in the final of a regional that appears to be the toughest of them all.

The one delectable thing the committee did was put Louisville in Baton Rouge as the 6 seed. It’s not quite what an LSU-Baylor potential second-round matchup would have been, but that is Van Lith’s former school. She doubled over with a “I can’t believe it” like reaction when she saw Louisville will be here. The Cardinals, of course, must get past No. 11 Middle Tennessee first, no guarantee, but it’s likely what we will see in the round of 32.

Hopefully, we will have more on this team in our next article. On the men’s side, Grambling & McNeese will be the only Louisiana representatives. With General Will Wade and his Cowboys ready to make a bit of noise in the tourney.

It was not as good of a start to SEC play for the baseball Tigers either. As they got drubbed on Friday, had an almost run rule victory made into a tight game on Saturday and then get run-ruled on Sunday! This team is by no means in trouble, but things must be shifted in the pitching staff and in the outfield. The good things are that the coaching staffs of the teams still playing (minus men’s basketball) has a pedigree of winning and are coming off national titles! Speaking of very good coaches, lets get back to softball.

Sure, this team lost the final game to Ole Miss but pulled off 24 consecutive wins to open the season. This included a major victory over Texas and let’s face it no one thought that this team would be undefeated through the entire season. The pressure is off and the streak is ended but the Lady Tigers are in a wonderful spot. An early loss helps them come back down to earth a bit and prove that they still can be beaten. Of course, late errors always hurt but this team is on very much stable ground.

The team is batting .348 while the pitchers have checked in with a 2.03 ERA. This team is solid on both

the infield and the outfield with 9 of 12 players with substantial innings all batting of .300 individually. In what could possibly be one of the best teams in Beth Torina’s tenure which should say a lot as she has been to the World Series 4 times though none in the past 7 seasons.

Hopefully, in the next article we will be talking more about how the whole athletic department is still playing meaningful games in basketball with baseball and softball on other winning streaks. Stay tuned….it should only get better from here!

GROWING GREENHOUSE TOMATOES

With the right technique, growing tomatoes in the greenhouse can be a rewarding experience. Today I am going to provide an overview of how to cultivate greenhouse tomatoes.

There are two primary cropping systems for greenhouse tomato production. One option is to produce a single crop by setting plants around mid-September and growing them until mid- to late June. In Mississippi a two-crop system is preferred instead. With a two-crop system both a spring crop and a fall crop are grown. For the fall crop, termination should be close to the end of December. For the spring crop, termination should be around mid- to late June when the temper-ature increase causes production decline.

The optimal relative humidity for growing greenhouse tomatoes is 60-70 percent, though this is often unobtainable in Mississippi. The optimum temperature range is 70 to 82 °F during the day and 62 to 64 °F at night. Nutrient deficiencies can develop below 60 °F as plants are unable to absorb some elements at cool temperatures. Do your best to avoid temperatures above 90 °F. Temperatures in the high nineties and above promote fruit splitting and other fruit quality problems. Another issue with an elevated greenhouse tempera-ture is the risk of leaf damage. Leaves lose more water to the atmosphere as their temperature increases. As long as there is adequate water available, water loss is normally compensated by an increase in water absorp-tion by the roots. As the temperature reaches the upper nineties and above, plants can lose water at a faster rate than the roots can absorb. This water loss results in leaf burning and scorching.

There are several ways to reduce greenhouse air and plant temperatures. The method I am going to highlight today is the use of a shade cloth. A shade cloth can be placed on the greenhouse or suspended above the crop within the greenhouse using wires or a similar system. The benefit of using a shade cloth on a suspen-sion system within the interior of the greenhouse is that you can easily move it in response to cloudy or sunny conditions. One disadvantage is that while there is a decrease in light penetration, there is not a same reduc-tion in heat. This is due to light being converted to heat within the greenhouse. In contrast, this process occurs before entering the greenhouse when the shade cloth is placed on the exterior. Shade cloths come in a variety of “percent shade” formulations. What is best will depend on the season and the number of expected cloudy days. A percent shade of 50 percent in May and June for the spring crop and August and September for the fall crop is recom-mended. Keep in mind that a shade cloth must be custom ordered to fit a greenhouse. Using white in the greenhouse (floor covering, bags, strings, etc.) will also assist with heat control.

CALIBRATING PUMP-UP SPRAYERS FOR SPOT TREATMENT

How much pesticide do I put in my sprayer to do an effective spray? This is a question that I get on a regular basis. Many products will tell you on the label to add a certain amount of product per gallon of water, but some tell you how much per acre to apply. Applying the correct amount of pesticide to the target weed, insect, disease etc. is key in controlling the pest.

First you should measure out a 340 square foot area that is like the area that you will be spraying. So if you are spraying a fence row where weeds are 4 foot tall then you should mark off an area of 85 feet (304 square Feet/4ft= 85 feet). Next Fill the sprayer to a known level in the spray tank with water only and make a mark on the side of the spray tank.

Next spray the 340 square foot area that you marked off. Make sure to get good cover-age and remember the technique that you use because it is important to follow the same tech-nique when you are spraying with pesticide in the tank. Using a measuring cup that has ounce markings, fill the spray tank with water back to the line that you marked on the side of the spray tank. The number of ounces that it takes to fill the spray tank back to the line on the spray tank is equal to the number of gallons per acre that you are applying. So, if it takes 50 ounces to fill tank back up then you are applying 50 GPA.

Now that you have figured out how many GPA you are applying then you need to know how much product that the pesticide label recommends applying per acre. If the label states, you need two quarts per acre of pesticide then how much would you put into the 2 ½ gallon sprayer?

GPA Gal of tank

2 quarts per acre of pesticide =64 ounce (50 gallons /2.5 gallons=20) 64 ounces /20= 3.2 ounces of pesticide for a full 2 ½ gallon sprayer

Taking time to complete these few steps will ensure that you make an effective spray application.

COGONGRASS

As spring green up is upon us, Cogongrass patches are beginning to be noticed.

The noxious weed is found most frequently in southeast Mississippi but it has been documented in the majority of Mississippi Counties. Cogongrass has no nutritional benefits for livestock and is detrimental to forage crops, lawns, and forestry land. It has been listed as one of the worst weeds in the world.

Cogongrass is easy to identify during winter dormancy, as it typically grows in a large circle with a tan color that is different from surrounding dormant grasses. Early spring green up is noticeable now along roadways, in fields, and many other areas.

The key to remember is that at this point, with research and information available, eradication is not an immediate option. Through integrated practices we can control patch size and limit the spread of seed. Management considerations include mechanical tillage and herbicides. Herbicide recommendations for Cogongrass include glyphosate and / or imazapyr. Please consult extension publications and seek input on which option best suits your scenario for management solutions to fit your needs.

Research continues to show that herbicide applications twice per year offer the best control. Start with an herbicide treatment in the early spring before blooming with the noticeable “feathery” flowers. The second treatment should be applied in the fall 4-6 weeks prior to the first frost in the fall.

More information on Cogongrass control can be found by reaching out to your local MSU Extension Agent or seeking publications on our website, https://extension.msstate.edu/.
