Hi, this is Kevin, and I’m here with Kendra at the Open Doors Adult Day Program. What is Open Doors and how did it get started? We are an adult day program that offers support and activities for all in our community. We started when a friend’s son graduated from high school and she was looking for a place for him to attend to develop peer relationships and get out in the community. Is it just for people with disabilities, or can anyone participate? We are open to all! Can you explain a little bit more about how you are trying to be an inclusive program? We are open to all abilities. We are planning on starting some drop-in classes where everybody will also be welcome, such as sewing, baking, cooking and fitness.

A gentleman dropped by one day and said that he had never had an opportunity to have a relationship with somebody with a disability and would like to learn how. He asked for guidance on how to communicate respectfully and interact. What activities do you offer? We have many different activities, such as life skills, money basics, cooking, baking, healthy eating, gardening and woodworking, as well as fun trips like bowling and swimming. Is there a fee to attend and if so, what are the costs involved? Yes, our fees depend on the support needed. We do an assessment to determine what the needs are. The fees range from $50 to $100 for half a day and $80 to $175 for a full day. People are able to use their passport funding to pay the fees if they choose to. What are the days and times that the program is open? We are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. We are also going to be starting a drop-in option. Watch for it to come soon! Is there an age limit? No, anybody over the age of 18 is welcome! For summer, we have lowered our age to 12 and up, for summer camps. How do you feel this program is contributing to the community? Community is everyone around us! We hope to be a valued part of Simcoe, offering help to those needing the extra support. How are you currently advertising and how can people contact you if they want to register? So far, we have done a few newspaper articles, as well as Facebook and Instagram posts. People are also welcome to drop in for a tour and to meet everybody. Thank you for your time and I can’t wait to sign up to learn more about gardening and woodworking.
