By Dave Scott Most teenagers firmly believe every adult lacks an IQ. They feel adults think they know everything, have no sense of humour, expect you to listen and always do what they say!

Then someone breaks through your teenage brainless exterior and shows you it is okay to have an adult in your life that you respect, and they respect you.

at a young lady. Anne recognised that and was forever helping me break out of my shell. She would put me in situations where I had to chat with young ladies at the restaurant. She would say, "You take that table," knowing there was a good chance I would nervously spill something. But you know, it slowly built my confidence and allowed me to grow as a person. Of course, she would then say, "You should ask her out."

As a teenager, I was lucky to work with many caring and supportive folks at my uncle's restaurant. Each of them provided a different insight into life and what it meant to be a good person.

Looking back, I understand all she did for me. She didn't have to, but she wanted to because we were friends. Maybe she remembered being young and shy, trying to figure it out.

One such person was Anne, who had this unbelievable, wonderful sense of humour.

That was why I was drawn to her. She always had a smile and never appeared to let the world get her down. She could laugh at anything and make you feel like you had been friends forever.

She cared about the people she worked with and seemed to understand that a job was just a job, but a friendship was a lifetime.

Ingredients 1 cup packed Medjool dates 2 Tbsp nut or seed butter 2 Tbsp Chia seeds 1 cup dark chocolate chips 2 Tsp raw cacao butter

Directions Remove pits from dates. Add dates, Chia seeds, and nut butter to a food processor. Blend until a sticky ball forms. Roll mixture into 1-inch balls and place in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Melt chocolate and cacao butter in a double boiler. Remove Chia bites from freezer and insert toothpicks in each one. Roll and coat in melted chocolate and place back in freezer for another 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy! Keep refrigerated in a container for 1 week.

Bromberg I have entered a different kind of endurance event for 2025. It is what is known as a journey run. The Last Annual Vol State Road Race is a 314-mile journey from Dorena Landing, Missouri, through Tennessee to Castle Rock, Georgia. Participants are totally reliant upon their own physical and mental resources. Within ten days, the Vol-Staters must make their way by foot, along highways and backroads, up mountains and down valleys, while accounting for all of their most basic needs: "What will I eat?" "When will I find water?" "Where will I sleep?" No crewing or pacing is allowed, and there are no official aid stations.

I am limited by a lack of flexion as a result of my replacement knees, likely caused by an excessive build-up of scar tissue. It is much more difficult for me to negotiate hills and stairs than it used to be.

Therefore, I will have to work harder than I would have years ago. I will have to try to compensate by preparing my body more thoroughly and in a different way.

Limitations can lead to creative alternatives. When we are older, we are continually having to invent new ways to compensate for our declining physical strength, flexibility, mobility and short-term memory. As long as we live independently on our own, we have to keep adapting to new obstacles in order to function smoothly. And we do. We may have to alter how we get in and out of a bathtub (I have adapted by only having showers), how we prepare our meals (e.g. opening containers, storing dishes), how we clean, how we transport ourselves indoors and outdoors, how we get up and down from chairs and beds, how we remember or record important dates and medications, and more. We learn from others or figure out methods that work for us. As one example, I designed modified stairs to make it easier for me to access my basement.

Now I am wondering if I can come up with a different way of walking that will allow me to move more quickly while reducing cumulative muscle fatigue and stress on my body. I am going to experiment with techniques and see if I can find anything that I like.

There was a famous Australian ultrarunner named Cliff Young, whose M70 world record for 6 Days I tried to surpass some years ago. He was an unknown when he won the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1983 at the age of 61. Young was a farmer and spent much of his time rounding up a herd of two thousand sheep by foot. Over the years, he developed his own efficient style, which became known as the Young Shuffle when he raced. There have been a few impactful innovations in the history of track and field. Probably the most famous is the Fosbury Flop, the high jump technique of jumping backwards and arching your body over the bar, first coming to the world's attention during Dick Fosbury's gold performance at the 1968 Olympics.

Maybe I can make a refinement to my walking style that will enable me to continue to partake in very long-distance races with some success while competing against those who run at least part of the time. I believe it will be interesting trying and will help to motivate me in training. I certainly don't believe in just accepting that I can't do something without making an effort to figure out a solution. It could be said that the only way around a problem is through it.

In general, fast walkers take smaller steps rather than longer steps. That is the technique I was taught in the North Shore walkers group. Excessively long strides use up more energy and, thus, increase fatigue. A faster turnover will decrease the impact

forces of each stride. I also think my stride length is getting shorter simply because I am aging.

This is an additional challenge. Not only am I not running, but my walking speed is getting slower.

That is motivating me to try something a bit different because my desire to compete remains the same as ever. There are lots of events I would like to do and people I would like to spend time with again.

I believe it is important for me to start thinking in terms of possibilities rather than limitations. Ideally, I want to develop an approach that will enable me to walk more quickly than I do now, without getting overly fatigued and without causing any injuries or irritations like shin splints or foot blisters. It would also be amazing if I could move in a way that alleviated the leaning issue that I am prone to after many hours on my feet.

One of the best things about running races is that there is so much variety. I spent many happy years competing in track races, speed events such as 5 and 10 km, 24-hour events and finally, multi-days. This year, I hope to do my first journey run. For this event, I will also have to become comfortable travelling with a pack on my back, carrying the supplies I will need for the 314 miles, and likely with trekking poles. So, I already have that to practice with over the next number of months. And maybe I will get to train with a refined method of locomotion as well. The fun is in the trying!

Barb Anstead, RHN, Metabolic Balance Coach February is known as Heart Month. I invite you to explore the aspects of life that affect and influence your heart, not just this month but as often as possible.

Life can be wonderfully and mysteriously quirky. There are times of subtlety and quiet, just as there are times of fury and resistance.

Among the many things I work toward in my practice, I strive to guide my clients in the "what, when, why, where, and how" nuances of their own lives. The vast number of wonders impact each of us on such a subtle but timeless level, and unless we actually bring our attention to these things, they may not get the notice they require.

Consider the pull of the moon, the undercurrent, power and incredible world beneath the surface of what otherwise may seem a calm ocean. A ripple may become a tsunami, and a gentle breeze can build into a cyclone depending on other influences.

In each and every one of us, there is an aweinspiring life force, nothing short of miraculous. Such are the rhythms of our bodies, and such are the impacts of our choices. Nutrition, lifestyle habits, thoughts, relationships, stress management, sleep habits, spiritual connection, or groundedness, to name a few.

Our every day has potential, whether to be stabilising, strengthening, and restorative or to lead to erosion, deterioration, and ultimately succumbing to our expiry date. Each of us will, as that is the rhythm of life and a cycle to which we are intimately connected.

Each of us has the ability to pivot, adjust, or improve. With the right guidance, we can tap into gentle reflection, introspection, or mindfulness to understand where we might apply new habits, decisions, or choices to assist in bringing about improvements through moderation, balance, and understanding or awareness.

Mindfulness helps us understand the importance and influences of what, when, why, where, and how, allowing us to honour and serve our bodies. These are critical components of discovering that we are all capable of a level of self-intuition.

Holistic approaches are often more of a much-needed whisper of encouragement.

Many of us experience those "Spidey senses". Gentle but powerful moments or messages of knowledge or truth that we recognise at our very core tell us something is going on in or around us. Within us, we possess an innate and wondrous connectivity to ourselves, as well as to everything around us.

Our Amygdala, or "primitive brain", is responsible for our fight or flight response, our "BS" meter, among other wonders. I surmise, along with others of great curiosity, that this is also why we "know" something is off in our bodies. This incredible self-knowledge, at the cellular level, is a capacity and awareness within.

When imbalances or health concerns arise, our intuition is a very underrated superpower. Often, it is dismissed or disregarded, especially when routine tests yield normal results, but none of us should ever stop looking for answers. You know your own body better than anyone.

Allopathic modern medicine has evolved, will continue to evolve, and is capable of wonderful things. Sometimes, these approaches are a bit like a sledgehammer.

These approaches can be lifesaving because time is of the essence, especially in an emergency.

Many of us would like to find a balance, establish a support system, or build a bridge between these different modalities, and I encourage this with my own clients.

All or nothing is likely to miss or ignore critical components. I encourage a "client/ patient-centred" approach because the individual should be the focal point.

Integrative, alternative practices are sometimes difficult to quantify, so they are often dismissed or disregarded. Holistic

approaches typically are a "tack hammer" approach, which is persistent and gentle but gets the job done.

We look for the root cause or origin, but it is important to have a qualified team because diagnostics are still critical components. We do not want to mask an issue that needs a stronger approach.

For each of you, I encourage you to honour and listen carefully to the knowledge within you. Listen to the whispers, the symptoms, the clues. The more we ignore or suppress, the louder our body will yell until the imbalance becomes a serious condition. If it resonates, book a consult!

This February, take heart. Begin to show yourself some love and create a new connection to yourself and, in turn, to one another and the world around us. Self-care and honouring the gift of your body and life will emanate and reverberate through your cells and beyond.

By Dave Scot t I was preparing for a trip and figured I best clean myself up before I headed out on the road. First to go was the beard, then the shaggy hair. I was starting to take on that hermit look.

What little hair I had left on my head matched the beard. It was everywhere and uncontrollable. So, after the shave, I was off to the barber. Over the years, I would sit in the chair and say, "Just clean it up." I have never complained. I let them do what they do best. As I sat there, I found myself looking into the mirror, going s**t, when did I start looking so old? When did all those wrinkles show up? My forehead is enormous!

The barber finished. I looked again.

Damn, she gave me an old guy haircut!

I quickly turned and said, "Please take a little more off the sides." As only a young barber could do, she looked me in the eyes and said, "No. It will not look right."

I was defeated. She was right.

Twenty hours later, I was climbing aboard a bus for a short trip. It was 5 am, and I admit I was excited because I used my age discount to save a few bucks. It was about time, I thought!

The driver was cordial and asked for my identification

to confirm my age. Well, now I feel just swell. I must look younger than I am!

In my vanity, I asked if he checked everyone. He pointed to a lady coming up the street. She was struggling through the snow. She looked weary as she dragged her small wheeled cart, the snow catching at the wheels. She was wearing a baby blue parka, something my grandma would have worn with oversized Ski-Doo mitts. Her face showed the years were piling up, and a swatch of grey hair peaked out of her parka. She was at the door now.

The bus driver looked at me and said, "She claims to be 60, but we know she is only 55. Today, I'm asking her for her ID." She slowly climbed aboard the bus, and the driver began to question her. She claimed she forgot her ID, and they argued. Now, for my sake, I was hoping she was at least 70-75.

She finally gave in and handed over her ID. The driver exclaimed, "You're only 57!"

My vanity crashed hard one more time. This lady was younger than me, and I was the oldest person on the bus. Mind you, there were only three of us, but still, it stung!

Maybe I am getting old. I go to bed at 8 pm, and I like putting on the heating pad at night and a little Vicks VapoRub on my chest. Yep, it's time to accept the facts! I am entering a new realm of my existence. The times are changing.

Well, this guy isn't changing. I am still young... kind of. I will fight to maintain my zest for life... but first, I need a nap! Where are my slippers?
