Mostteenagersfirmlybelieveeveryadult lacksanIQ.Theyfeeladultsthinktheyknow everything,havenosenseofhumour,expect youtolistenandalwaysdowhattheysay!

Beingateenagercanbetricky,but communicationisvital.

Thensomeonebreaksthroughyourteenage brainlessexteriorandshowsyouitisokayto haveanadultinyourlifethatyourespect, andtheyrespectyou.

Asateenager,Iwasluckytoworkwithmany caringandsupportivefolksatmyuncle's restaurant.Eachofthemprovidedadifferent insightintolifeandwhatitmeanttobea goodperson.

OnesuchpersonwasAnne,whohadthis unbelievable,wonderfulsenseofhumour. ThatwaswhyIwasdrawntoher.Shealways hadasmileandneverappearedtoletthe worldgetherdown.Shecouldlaughat anythingandmakeyoufeellikeyouhad beenfriendsforever.

Iwasasupershyguybackthen.I wouldgetnervousjustlooking

atayounglady.Annerecognisedthatand wasforeverhelpingmebreakoutofmy shell.Shewouldputmeinsituationswhere Ihadtochatwithyoungladiesatthe restaurant.Shewouldsay,"Youtakethat table,"knowingtherewasagoodchanceI wouldnervouslyspillsomething.Butyou know,itslowlybuiltmyconfidenceand allowedmetogrowasaperson.Ofcourse, shewouldthensay,"Youshouldaskher out."

Lookingback,Iunderstandallshedidfor me.Shedidn'thaveto,butshewantedto becausewewerefriends.Maybeshe rememberedbeingyoungandshy,tryingto figureitout.

Shecaredaboutthepeoplesheworkedwith andseemedtounderstandthatajobwas justajob,butafriendshipwasalifetime.

Anytimeweranintoeachother,evenyears later,shewouldgivemethatsmile,andwe wouldspendtimecatchingup.

Afewyearsback,wesatandhadcoffee oncemore.Lifehadchanged

her.Iwassohappythatsherecognisedme. Wechattedaboutourtimetogetherall thoseyearsago.Sherememberedwork storiesIhadnotthoughtaboutinyears!Like always,herwarmsmilefilledtheroomwith loveandprovidedonemorelaughtogether.

Ihaveenteredadifferentkindofenduranceevent for2025.Itiswhatisknownasajourneyrun.The LastAnnualVolStateRoadRaceisa314-mile journeyfromDorenaLanding,Missouri,through TennesseetoCastleRock,Georgia.Participantsare totallyreliantupontheirownphysicalandmental resources.Withintendays,theVol-Statersmust maketheirwaybyfoot,alonghighwaysand backroads,upmountainsanddownvalleys,while accountingforalloftheirmostbasicneeds:"What willIeat?""WhenwillIfindwater?""WherewillI sleep?"Nocrewingorpacingisallowed,andthere arenoofficialaidstations.

Iamlimitedbyalackofflexionasaresultofmy replacementknees,likelycausedbyanexcessive build-upofscartissue.Itismuchmoredifficultfor metonegotiatehillsandstairsthanitusedtobe.

Therefore,Iwillhavetowork harderthanIwouldhaveyears ago.Iwillhavetotryto compensatebypreparingmybody morethoroughlyandinadifferent way.

Limitationscanleadtocreativealternatives.When weareolder,wearecontinuallyhavingtoinvent newwaystocompensateforourdecliningphysical strength,flexibility,mobilityandshort-term memory.Aslongasweliveindependentlyonour own,wehavetokeepadaptingtonewobstaclesin ordertofunctionsmoothly.Andwedo.Wemay havetoalterhowwegetinandoutofabathtub(I haveadaptedbyonlyhavingshowers),howwe prepareourmeals(e.g.openingcontainers,storing dishes),howweclean,howwetransportourselves indoorsandoutdoors,howwegetupanddown fromchairsandbeds,howwerememberorrecord importantdatesandmedications,andmore.We learnfromothersorfigureoutmethodsthatwork forus.Asoneexample,Idesignedmodifiedstairsto makeiteasierformetoaccessmybasement.

NowIamwonderingifIcancomeupwitha differentwayofwalkingthatwillallowmetomove morequicklywhilereducingcumulativemuscle fatigueandstressonmybody.Iamgoingto experimentwithtechniquesandseeifIcanfind anythingthatIlike.

Limitations Overcoming

TherewasafamousAustralianultrarunnernamed CliffYoung,whoseM70worldrecordfor6DaysI triedtosurpasssomeyearsago.Hewasanunknown whenhewontheinauguralSydneytoMelbourne Ultramarathonin1983attheageof61.Youngwasa farmerandspentmuchofhistimeroundingupa herdoftwothousandsheepbyfoot.Overtheyears, hedevelopedhisownefficientstyle,whichbecame knownastheYoungShufflewhenheraced.There havebeenafewimpactfulinnovationsinthehistory oftrackandfield.Probablythemostfamousisthe FosburyFlop,thehighjumptechniqueofjumping backwardsandarchingyourbodyoverthebar,first comingtotheworld'sattentionduringDick Fosbury'sgoldperformanceatthe1968Olympics.

MaybeIcanmakearefinementtomywalkingstyle thatwillenablemetocontinuetopartakeinvery long-distanceraceswithsomesuccesswhile competingagainstthosewhorunatleastpartofthe time.Ibelieveitwillbeinterestingtryingandwill helptomotivatemeintraining.Icertainlydon't believeinjustacceptingthatIcan'tdosomething withoutmakinganefforttofigureoutasolution.It couldbesaidthattheonlywayaroundaproblemis throughit.

Ingeneral,fastwalkerstakesmallerstepsrather thanlongersteps.ThatisthetechniqueIwastaught intheNorthShorewalkersgroup.Excessivelylong stridesuseupmoreenergyand,thus,increase fatigue.Afasterturnoverwilldecreasetheimpact

forcesofeachstride.Ialsothinkmystridelengthis gettingshortersimplybecauseIamaging.

Thisisanadditionalchallenge.NotonlyamInot running,butmywalkingspeedisgettingslower. Thatismotivatingmetotrysomethingabit differentbecausemydesiretocompeteremainsthe sameasever.TherearelotsofeventsIwouldliketo doandpeopleIwouldliketospendtimewithagain. Ibelieveitisimportantformetostartthinkingin termsofpossibilitiesratherthanlimitations.Ideally, Iwanttodevelopanapproachthatwillenablemeto walkmorequicklythanIdonow,withoutgetting overlyfatiguedandwithoutcausinganyinjuriesor irritationslikeshinsplintsorfootblisters.Itwould alsobeamazingifIcouldmoveinawaythat alleviatedtheleaningissuethatIampronetoafter manyhoursonmyfeet.

Oneofthebestthingsaboutrunningracesisthat thereissomuchvariety.Ispentmanyhappyyears competingintrackraces,speedeventssuchas5and 10km,24-houreventsandfinally,multi-days.This year,Ihopetodomyfirstjourneyrun.Forthis event,Iwillalsohavetobecomecomfortable travellingwithapackonmyback,carryingthe suppliesIwillneedforthe314miles,andlikelywith trekkingpoles.So,Ialreadyhavethattopractice withoverthenextnumberofmonths.AndmaybeI willgettotrainwitharefinedmethodoflocomotion aswell.Thefunisinthetrying!

FebruaryisknownasHeartMonth.Iinviteyou toexploretheaspectsoflifethataffectand influenceyourheart,notjustthismonthbutas oftenaspossible.

Lifecanbewonderfullyandmysteriously quirky.Therearetimesofsubtletyandquiet, justastherearetimesoffuryandresistance. AmongthemanythingsIworktowardinmy practice,Istrivetoguidemyclientsinthe "what,when,why,where,andhow"nuancesof theirownlives.Thevastnumberofwonders impacteachofusonsuchasubtlebuttimeless level,andunlessweactuallybringour attentiontothesethings,theymaynotgetthe noticetheyrequire.

Considerthepullofthemoon,the undercurrent,powerandincredibleworld beneaththesurfaceofwhatotherwisemay seemacalmocean.Aripplemaybecomea tsunami,andagentlebreezecanbuildintoa cyclonedependingonotherinfluences.

Ineachandeveryoneofus,thereisanaweinspiringlifeforce,nothingshortof miraculous.Sucharetherhythmsofour bodies,andsucharetheimpactsofour choices.Nutrition,lifestylehabits,thoughts, relationships,stressmanagement,sleephabits, spiritualconnection,orgroundedness,to nameafew.

Oureverydayhaspotential,whethertobe stabilising,strengthening,andrestorativeortolead toerosion,deterioration,andultimately succumbingtoourexpirydate.Eachofuswill,as thatistherhythmoflifeandacycletowhichweare intimatelyconnected.

Eachofushastheabilitytopivot,adjust,or improve.Withtherightguidance,wecantapinto gentlereflection,introspection,ormindfulnessto understandwherewemightapplynewhabits, decisions,orchoicestoassistinbringingabout improvementsthroughmoderation,balance,and understandingorawareness.

Mindfulnesshelpsusunderstandtheimportance andinfluencesofwhat,when,why,where,andhow, allowingustohonourandserveourbodies.These arecriticalcomponentsofdiscoveringthatweare allcapableofalevelofself-intuition.

Holisticapproachesareoftenmoreofa much-neededwhisperofencouragement. Manyofusexperiencethose"Spidey senses".Gentlebutpowerfulmomentsor messagesofknowledgeortruththatwe recogniseatourverycoretellussomething isgoingoninoraroundus.Withinus,we possessaninnateandwondrous connectivitytoourselves,aswellasto everythingaroundus.

OurAmygdala,or"primitivebrain",is responsibleforourfightorflightresponse, our"BS"meter,amongotherwonders.I surmise,alongwithothersofgreat curiosity,thatthisisalsowhywe"know" somethingisoffinourbodies.This incredibleself-knowledge,atthecellular level,isacapacityandawarenesswithin. Whenimbalancesorhealthconcernsarise, ourintuitionisaveryunderrated superpower.Often,itisdismissedor disregarded,especiallywhenroutinetests yieldnormalresults,butnoneofusshould everstoplookingforanswers.Youknow yourownbodybetterthananyone.

Allopathicmodernmedicinehasevolved, willcontinuetoevolve,andiscapableof wonderfulthings.Sometimes,these approachesareabitlikeasledgehammer. Theseapproachescanbelifesaving becausetimeisoftheessence,especiallyin anemergency.

Manyofuswouldliketofindabalance, establishasupportsystem,orbuilda bridgebetweenthesedifferentmodalities, andIencouragethiswithmyownclients. Allornothingislikelytomissorignore criticalcomponents.Iencouragea"client/ patient-centred"approachbecausethe individualshouldbethefocalpoint. Integrative,alternativepracticesare sometimesdifficulttoquantify,sotheyare oftendismissedordisregarded.Holistic

approachestypicallyarea"tackhammer"approach, whichispersistentandgentlebutgetsthejobdone. Welookfortherootcauseororigin,butitisimportant tohaveaqualifiedteambecausediagnosticsarestill criticalcomponents.Wedonotwanttomaskanissue thatneedsastrongerapproach.

Foreachofyou,Iencourageyoutohonourandlisten carefullytotheknowledgewithinyou.Listentothe whispers,thesymptoms,theclues.Themoreweignore orsuppress,thelouderourbodywillyelluntilthe imbalancebecomesaseriouscondition.Ifitresonates, bookaconsult!

ThisFebruary,takeheart.Begintoshowyourselfsome loveandcreateanewconnectiontoyourselfand,in turn,tooneanotherandtheworldaroundus.Self-care andhonouringthegiftofyourbodyandlifewill emanateandreverberatethroughyourcellsand beyond.

IwaspreparingforatripandfiguredI bestcleanmyselfupbeforeIheaded outontheroad.Firsttogowasthe beard,thentheshaggyhair.Iwas startingtotakeonthathermitlook. WhatlittlehairIhadleftonmyhead matchedthebeard.Itwaseverywhere anduncontrollable.So,aftertheshave, Iwasofftothebarber.Overtheyears, Iwouldsitinthechairandsay,"Just cleanitup."Ihavenevercomplained.I letthemdowhattheydobest.AsIsat there,Ifoundmyselflookingintothe mirror,goings**t,whendidIstart lookingsoold?Whendidallthose wrinklesshowup?Myforeheadis enormous!

Thebarberfinished.Ilookedagain. Damn,shegavemeanoldguyhaircut! Iquicklyturnedandsaid,"Pleasetake alittlemoreoffthesides."Asonlya youngbarbercoulddo,shelookedme intheeyesandsaid,"No.Itwillnot lookright."

Iwasdefeated.Shewasright. Twentyhourslater,Iwasclimbing aboardabusforashorttrip.Itwas5 am,andIadmitIwasexcitedbecause Iusedmyagediscounttosaveafew bucks.Itwasabouttime,I thought!

Thedriverwascordialand askedformyidentification

toconfirmmyage.Well,nowIfeeljustswell.Imust lookyoungerthanIam!

Inmyvanity,Iaskedifhecheckedeveryone.He pointedtoaladycomingupthestreet.Shewas strugglingthroughthesnow.Shelookedwearyas shedraggedhersmallwheeledcart,thesnow catchingatthewheels.Shewaswearingababyblue parka,somethingmygrandmawouldhaveworn withoversizedSki-Doomitts.Herfaceshowedthe yearswerepilingup,andaswatchofgreyhair peakedoutofherparka.Shewasatthedoornow. Thebusdriverlookedatmeandsaid,"Sheclaims tobe60,butweknowsheisonly55.Today,I'm askingherforherID."

Sheslowlyclimbedaboardthebus,andthedriver begantoquestionher.Sheclaimedsheforgother ID,andtheyargued.Now,formysake,Iwashoping shewasatleast70-75.

ShefinallygaveinandhandedoverherID.The driverexclaimed,"You'reonly57!"

Myvanitycrashedhardonemoretime.Thislady wasyoungerthanme,andIwastheoldestperson onthebus.Mindyou,therewereonlythreeofus, butstill,itstung!

MaybeIamgettingold.Igotobedat8pm,andI likeputtingontheheatingpadatnightandalittle VicksVapoRubonmychest.Yep,it'stimetoaccept thefacts!Iamenteringanewrealmofmy existence.Thetimesarechanging.

Well,thisguyisn'tchanging.Iamstillyoung...kind of.Iwillfighttomaintainmyzestforlife...butfirst, Ineedanap!Wherearemyslippers?
