A Moment in Time By: Dave Scott Memories I shook my head in disbelief as I scanned our Hub archives looking for the perfect cover for the Hub History Page in the magazine, because there it was. Sitting in front of me was the August 21, 2012 edition of the Hub. On the cover ten years ago, Lake Ontario loomed large with the Toronto skyline in the background and in the mist was a young lady in the last length of her swim for shore and history! Most folks in the country followed the crazy adventure that Annaleise took us on for those 20some hours. A wave of memories of the crew flashed across my mind as I looked back at the photos. For that brief moment in time, we were cemented as one through our experience.
Drive Challenges in life are nothing new to all of us. It is how we react and the character within each of us that determines the outcome. It is the drive to succeed in the face of adversity when we help others. As we face wave upon wave of sacrifice to finish what we started. It is the moment you understand that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
The Longest Night The dark sky melted into the surrounding lake. You could sense the waves rising from the onslaught of the stormy Lake Ontario weather that was about to hit. Could we, should we, try to push through what was going to be a night no one on the crew would ever forget? Yes. The petite young lady was swimming within the diamond formation of boats that tightly surrounded her, small lights bobbing up and down as the large rolling waves pushed her back to the same spot she was just in. She just kept swimming hour after hour, wave upon wave, until the sun began to rise over the horizon and the lake released her from its grip.
accept that, but nothing prepares you for the actual challenges when the day arrives. Physically, you can be in the best shape of your life, but in the end, it is the strength of your mind that will carry you. There is one other crucial factor. That being the folks sharing your journey with you. In this swimmer’s case, it was a crew who totally believed in her and put forth the love and energy that very well could have been the X factor that day. The funny thing about hitting the wall is that some folks quit, and others push through. That morning, after fuelling, a positive pep talk from her coach and with the swim pacers hitting the water to join her, we watched as her swim stroke regained power, and that toothy smile came back to life. We all knew nothing was going to stop her from reaching the shoreline of Toronto!
Crew Thinking back of all the folks that helped make her dream come true, I get a little misty. We built the crew with folks that could work together and trust one another when situations might get sticky. Most folks don’t know that the crew trained endless hours on the lake and land, both day and night, to be prepared for any situation that could occur, to keep Annaleise safe and moving forward. Everyone had a role to play in the success of the crossing, and they did just that. Did any of us realize going in just how enormous the crossing would get and the amount of money it would raise for Camp Trillium? I don't think so. Our PR guy and I talked a little beforehand and prepared, but in his words, when the media circus arrived, we knew then it was bigger than we ever imagined. There was a huge hometown welcome for Annaleise and the crew. Which led all the way to Ottawa to meet the Prime Minister. It was one heck of a ride!
What we saw that morning was an exhausted swimmer, who literally appeared to be sleeping as she swam. I remember thinking this is over. She is done.
Lives have changed and folks have moved on in every direction to take on fresh adventures in the ten years since. Some of us have lost contact, and a member of our crew has passed.
For anyone who has done any type of endurance training for a long-distance event, you realize that there is going to be pain and suffering. To accomplish your goal, you have to understand and
Life in that moment in time was something we all shared ten years ago, and come hell or high water, nothing can take that from us! Thank you to all who made it possible.

Herb Carnegie ~ HOCKEY HALL OF FAME “May it be said that we tried to leave this society better than we found it.” ~ Herb Carnegie Like so many, when I was young I wanted to be a hockey player. I was small but a very strong skater. As much time as possible was spent at our neighbourhood outdoor rink every winter. I was in my element during innumerable pickup games and often stayed on the ice practicing my skills late at night after everyone else had gone home. In my PeeWee year, age eleven, I was one of the participants in the newly-formed Future Aces Hockey School. About twenty of us practiced twice a week at Mitchell Field, the local outdoor artificial ice rink. I didn’t learn until decades later that it was the first registered hockey school in Canada, established in 1955. Starting the next year, we played in the North York Hockey League. My age group teams were league champions for the four years I played, up to age sixteen. Still, the main goal of the Future Aces program was not winning, but teaching us how to play the game and how to be upstanding citizens. The idea of the hockey school was conceived by the outstanding, just retired player, Herb Carnegie, who will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame posthumously this November. Unfortunately, he did not live to receive the prestigious honour in person, having died in 2012. My memories of him are still very much alive, especially from that winter on the ice over 65 years ago. He was a superb skater and a patient, knowledgeable instructor. We all loved listening to him explain the game for us. As a young man, he had been one of the best hockey players in the country. During his peak
years, he played for the Quebec Aces in the Quebec Senior League. Among his teammates was Jean Beliveau and the coach was Punch Imlach. Why didn’t he play in the NHL? He was black. No team owner would sign a black player. Conn Smythe, the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was quoted as saying he would give ten thousand dollars to anyone who could turn Carnegie white. Herb is widely considered as the best black player never to have been in the NHL. He was at the top of his game in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. The colour barrier wasn’t broken in hockey until 1958. Carnegie retired from hockey in 1954 at the age of 34. In his book, “A Fly in a Pail of Milk”, he states that he was angry, defeated, frustrated and humiliated. What resonates most for me is how he dealt with overt racism and the insurmountable barrier to his hockey goal. As he looked back on his life, he was able to say his experience taught him that a young man’s thwarted dream can lead to other dreams being realized later in life. One test we all face is how we handle life’s obstacles. Herb Carnegie went on to a very successful career in the insurance industry, was the two-time Canadian Senior Golf Champion and wrote the Future Aces Creed, which is displayed in many schools. For me, Mr. Carnegie has always been an example of how to handle your circumstances with grace and positivity. Why is it that racism still exists? The impact of racism is that a set of humans is socially, culturally and politically excluded, declared ineligible to be equal participants in society because of their skin colour. It is utterly demeaning for them. Racism is a system of advantage based on race. I think many people, myself included, underestimate the depths of racism. People tend to feel and act more positively toward those they consider to be like them and be part of their “ingroup”. This means that they are more likely to treat people from outside their social circles less favourably. Studies demonstrate that the amount of exposure a child has to other racial groups early in life affects how they will think about and act toward those groups when they are adults. Passivism is also an issue. For example, overlooking or denying the existence of racism encourages others to do the same. We need to
all become anti-racist. White people hold a disproportionate percentage of the power and economic advantage. Because I am white, I have the privilege to not think about racism. However, that is not right. We live individually but, as a society, we can only be judged collectively. James Baldwin wrote, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed that is not faced.” Talking about race is hard because it doesn’t allow one to pretend racism doesn’t exist. And sadly, when one is accustomed to privilege, equality can feel like oppression. I believe in the concepts of fairness and equality and acknowledge that I have much to learn in my quest to be a more worthy human being. I do know I am fortunate to have met and listened to a man of such quality, in my eyes, as Herb Carnegie, at such an impressionable age. He was a person of high moral character and exceptional talent, yet the road to his greatest athletic goal was blocked. All he wanted was an equal chance. I knew that concrete example at an early age and I had the opportunity, firsthand, to observe how he dealt with it. I am thrilled that Herb Carnegie is being recognized by the hockey world for his talent and his character. But I am saddened by the fact that it has taken far too long. If you are a reader of my articles, you know that I am slowly learning about Stoicism. Marcus Aurelius said, “As you move forward along the path of reason, people will stand in your way. They will never be able to keep you from doing what is sound.” As a society, we must keep trying to move forward along that path regardless of those who would block it. Mr. Carnegie exemplified that effort. Let’s all try to leave this society better than we found it.

Regardless of who you are or where you are in life, you will likely encounter situations where you want something different for yourself. New learning curves are something I typically enjoy very much! Recovering from my latest concussion has brought about a fair share of unexpected ones. That being said, I have chosen to sink into these great reminders in the school of life and allow myself to be open to new growth opportunities. MINDSET. Wow!! Now that is a powerful and non-negotiable part of the equation if you desire or have “fallen into” a situation that requires change and improvement. For me, it was the powerful recognition that this injury was different. To do nothing would certainly not serve me. I needed help beyond my own skill and knowledge. I was going to have to adjust and make changes to get better and it became clear this was going to take time and that there would be days that felt like setbacks, or even some limitations. It has also required financial investment, resources, time, energy, effort, know-how, support and motivation. Fortunately, there was also the recognition that there is always a way for each of us, regardless of the situation, to find a solution that is Better Than, and begin.
In my practice, I encourage my clients strongly to begin with moderation and balance. Most of us are wonderfully and relatively normal, blessed to be living the lives we live in this area of the world. We get comfortable with our habits, ways, and traditions. Over the years, so many of my clients have told me stories about how discouraged they were to have jumped into different sorts of programs, plans, or memberships for a quick fix to something they desired to change. We’re not talking, just dipping the toes in and testing the waters, we’re talking, blindfolded, and both feet into the deep end of choppy water. What happens if this person doesn’t even know how to swim but they have been told it’s so much fun they just take the leap? Mindset and knowledge are crucial. You need to know what you are getting into, be clear about what your motivation and skill level are, and know what you want to get out of it. Weekend Warrior and Elitist Attitudes, without proper coaching or training, can get people injured or into a health crisis with long-term repercussions. “All or nothing” approaches, while exciting in the moment, will not serve most of us, as the vision is not realistic or sustainable. To navigate a big change in your life, regardless of the challenge, is most likely to be successful and sustainable with a clear path, a knowledgeable support team and a clear mindset. The great news is that we can focus instead on Better Than, the critical building blocks with which we can make permanent changes to our health or situation with a realistic and professionally created and guided plan to achieve our goal. We identify a desire for change or improvement. There is planning, gathering of resources, application of the steps and a timeline can even be decided on for certain goals to be achieved. Working with a professional gives each of us a better lens through which we can see whether our expectations are realistic or whether we are overreaching without the proper tools or support. They can help you recognize the process, those small but powerful steps of Better Than. Nurture the mindset to get you to a successful, sustainable outcome and optimize your intended goal. In my practice, and at Dover Apothecary, we share this level of care, commitment, and compassion towards our community, patients, and clients. We believe that each of us can be Better Than, through implementing manageable lifestyle techniques and health practices. We are dedicated to guidance through encouraging your personal involvement, understanding and the action involved in discovering a healthier you. Nutrition or supplement recommendations in person on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Appointments to book a Nutritional Consultation or Assessments, Metabolic Balance Coaching and Plans, Lifestyle Coaching or for Neurotechnology to benefit you or a loved one are through my home office in Simcoe. Some of the tools include Team, Support, Goals and Maintenance, Nutrition and Supplements, Rest, Hydration, Reduction of Inflammation, Activity, Balance, Education and Application, all designed around your specific needs. Acknowledge and celebrate your progress and success! I invite you to explore being nicer to yourself by focusing on Nutrition, Intentions, Commitment, Empowerment/Education, and Resources. Become healthier and more vital by doing life Better Than and recognizing that life can get so much easier and more rewarding with this mindset. Just start, even if it’s one glass of water more each day, a serving of vegetables or ten more steps than you did yesterday. It could also be committing to a little less each day of something you know isn’t serving you well. That is also Better Than! It’s a process and You CAN do it!

Hi, this is Kevin, and I’m here with Kendra at the Open Doors Adult Day Program. What is Open Doors and how did it get started? We are an adult day program that offers support and activities for all in our community. We started when a friend’s son graduated from high school and she was looking for a place for him to attend to develop peer relationships and get out in the community. Is it just for people with disabilities, or can anyone participate? We are open to all! Can you explain a little bit more about how you are trying to be an inclusive program? We are open to all abilities. We are planning on starting some drop-in classes where everybody will also be welcome, such as sewing, baking, cooking and fitness.
T H I S , T H AT AND THE OTHER S P O N S O R E D B Y:
SIMCOE LIONS CLUB
A gentleman dropped by one day and said that he had never had an opportunity to have a relationship with somebody with a disability and would like to learn how. He asked for guidance on how to communicate respectfully and interact. What activities do you offer? We have many different activities, such as life skills, money basics, cooking, baking, healthy eating, gardening and woodworking, as well as fun trips like bowling and swimming. Is there a fee to attend and if so, what are the costs involved? Yes, our fees depend on the support needed. We do an assessment to determine what the needs are. The fees range from $50 to $100 for half a day and $80 to $175 for a full day. People are able to use their passport funding to pay the fees if they choose to. What are the days and times that the program is open? We are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. We are also going to be starting a drop-in option. Watch for it to come soon! Is there an age limit? No, anybody over the age of 18 is welcome! For summer, we have lowered our age to 12 and up, for summer camps. How do you feel this program is contributing to the community? Community is everyone around us! We hope to be a valued part of Simcoe, offering help to those needing the extra support. How are you currently advertising and how can people contact you if they want to register? So far, we have done a few newspaper articles, as well as Facebook and Instagram posts. People are also welcome to drop in for a tour and to meet everybody. Thank you for your time and I can’t wait to sign up to learn more about gardening and woodworking.
A Sense of By: Dave Scott I have climbed the Eiffel tower in Paris, France, and looked out at that wonderful city. I have stood watching Niagara Falls with all its power and beauty, rafted the mighty Ottawa River, and stood below Big Ben in England, but to be honest, looking out on the pier in Port Dover still beats them all! Why is that? What draws us there? I pondered these questions recently, thinking it is a Doverite thing, in our gene pool! I asked a friend, who moved to Dover a number of years ago, what he thought drew him to the pier? He explained to me that the pier is magical because it allows folks to be on the water and feel safe at the same time. It provides an experience the majority of folks don’t get every day. I think he has something there. Each year, thousands of folks from out of town are drawn to take a walk out to the end of the pier and look out at the open lake before them. I decided to investigate a little more and here is some of the scientific reasoning on why we are drawn to bodies of water in this article by Carolyn Gregoire (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/ mental-benefits-water_n_5791024) Our affinity for water is even reflected in the near-universal attraction to the color blue. We're naturally drawn to aquatic hues and people associate this color with qualities like calm, openness, depth and wisdom. "We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what's broken," Nichols writes in Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier,
Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do, published in July. "We have a 'blue mind' -- and it's perfectly tailored to make us happy in all sorts of ways that go way beyond relaxing in the surf, listening to the murmur of a stream, or floating quietly in a pool." While in the restful, contemplative state associated with observing or interacting with water, it's also common to experience feelings of awe, Nichols' research has found. The emotion of awe invokes feelings of a connection to something beyond oneself, a sense of the vastness of nature and an attempt to make sense of the experience. "That switches you from a 'me' orientation to a 'we' orientation," says Nichols, citing research findings that feelings of awe can increase our capacity for connection and empathy. "When you experience that feeling of awe, you get that 'one with the universe' feeling," says Nichols. "You feel connected to yourself, the world around you, and whoever you happen to be with. That puts you in a 'we' state of mind." I remember a few times in my life feeling the vastness of the water and just how small I felt in it. Once when swimming from Pottahawk to Turkey Point, I remember stopping and looking around and seeing absolutely nothing but water. There was just a sense of calm that came over me and that simple feeling of how we are all just such a small piece of nature. The other times were with my dad out on his fishing tug as a kid - understanding the connection to the water within the family heritage. For my father, it was his calming spot in his alcoholfuelled life. Life made sense to him out there. I understand that now.
Generations by the Water by Erin Scott
Being in and around water can be calming on so many levels to us. From a sensory standpoint, there is the lull or the crash of the waves, a sound that can be soothing, along with the many colours that play within the waters. One of my favourite things about the water is how some days it is soft and clear and you can see all the way to the bottom. There is the glory of a sunset as the warm hues play across the water on a warm summer evening. Let us not forget the moon and the way in which it seems to shimmer and sparkle along the lake. There is also a feeling of oneness with the universe as a whole that we may feel when we gaze out into bodies of water. There is a reminder there that water, as beautiful as it is, also holds power.
Kal Commodore
Calm One of the deepest senses of oneness that I often feel with the water has not to do with the water but with all the people that I have shared it with. How my dad was always teaching my brother and me how to read and respect the water, telling us stories about his dad (our grandfather) and his love for the water. I have always felt that Lake Erie is a part of who I am (and not because of all the water I have accidentally swallowed over the years) but because of the shared family history that the lake will always possess for me.
Port Dover
While we can break down the scientific reasons for why we humans hold such a fascination with water (maybe because water makes up so much of what we are made of), at the end of the day, we all hold a unique relationship with water. One thing we do know for sure, though, is that like everything else in life, the lake is best enjoyed with loved ones by your side.
