CommunityLivingAccessandtherestofthe developmentalservicessectorarecallingonthe OntarioGovernmenttoactnowandprovide sustainablefunding.52,000peoplewith intellectual/developmentaldisabilitiesare waitingfortheopportunitytobelong—notto aservicesystembuttovibrantcommunities wheretheycancontributeandbevalued.

Takeonesimpleexampleofthistrendtoward separateness.Goingtothemoviesusedtobea collectiveexperience,enjoyedwithfriendsandin thecompanyofstrangers.Buttechnologyturned filmintoat-homeentertainment.Today,the typicalNorthAmericanbuysaboutthreemovie ticketsayearandwatches19hoursoftelevisiona week.Aritualoftogethernesshasbeen transformedintoapastimeofhomebound seclusion.

In-personsocializingisdeclining.Alonetime predictablyspikedduringthepandemic,andithas goneevenhighersince2021.Theamountoftime peoplespendhelpingorcaringforthoseoutside theirnuclearfamilyisalsodeclining.Self-imposed isolationmightbethemostimportantsocialfact ofthiscentury.TheUnitedKingdomandJapan

nowhavegovernmentministersforloneliness. Theincreaseinalonetime,thiswayoflifewithits comfortsandconveniententertainments,canbea curse.Suchanindividualpreferenceforaloneness, exercisedrepeatedlyovertime,canrewireour identities.Theconsequencesarefar-reachingfor ourhappinessandforourcommunities.

Considerthefirsthalfofthe20thcentury.Church membershipsurged.Associationsofallsorts thrived.Marriageratesreachedarecordhighafter theSecondWorldWar,andthebirthrateenjoyed afamous"boom".Developersbuilttheatres, libraries,playgrounds,andotherkindsof gatheringplaces.

Butinthesecondhalfofthecentury,peopleused theircarstomovefurtherawayfromoneanother, enablingthegrowthofsuburbsandaretreatinto backyardpatiosandmoreprivatelives.Individuals begantousetelevisionastheirprimarysourceof entertainmentandbecamelesslikelytoengagein abroadrangeofsocialactivities,suchasdinner parties,volunteeringandchurchgoing.

Now,inadditiontocarsandtelevision,weare beingshapedbysmartphones.Attheextreme end,screensoccupymorethan30percentofthe wakinglivesofthoseundertwenty.More worrisomethanwhatyoungpeopledoontheir phonesiswhattheyaren'tdoing.Theyareless

likelytohavemorethanoneclosefriendoreven hangoutwithfriendsatall.Ourlengthychildhood mightbeconsideredanextendedapprenticeship insociallearningthroughplay.Thebestkindof playisphysical,withotherkids,andunsupervised, allowingthemtofindtheirlimitsandlearntoget along.Sociallyunderdevelopedchildhoodleadsto sociallystuntedadulthood.

Allagesareisolatingthemselves.Adultsare nowadaysmorelikelytotakemeetingsfrom home,shopfromhome,beentertainedathome, andeatathome.Thewholeeconomyhas reorienteditselftoallowpeopletostaywithin theirfourwalls.Acardinalruleofmodernhome andapartmentdesignisthateveryroomisbuiltto accommodatemaximalscreentime.

Somethingabouttoday'sworlddivides people,sotheyareononesideorthe otherwithnoapparentmiddleground.If thereisamiddleground,manyofus standingtherelisteningshakeourheads andwalkawayindisbeliefatbothsides.

Iwantedtosharethisbecause,atone pointrecently,folksweretryingtooutdo eachotheraboutwhohadthebigger problemstodealwith.

Honestly,Ifounditbothsadand amusingthatthisiswhatithadcome downtoforgrownadultssoconsumed withtheiregos,unabletolookbeyond themselvesforthebettermentofothers.

WhenIwasakid,acommonphrase amongadultswas,"Bestcleanyourown doorstepsbeforeyoucleanoffothers."

Forthoseunfamiliarwiththissaying,the implicationwassimple:takecareofyour problemsinyourhomebeforeyoustart tellingothershowtoruntheir homes.Boy,howthingshave changed.

Iunderstandweallhaveissues,bigand small,andwedefinitelyneedsomeoneto talktowhocangroundusandmake senseofwhatwearedealingwith. Hereisasmallreminderforallofusto thinkbeforewetalk,toconsiderthefolks aroundusandwhattheymaybedealing with.Weshouldaskourselves,"Dowe reallyhaveitthatbad?"Iftheansweris yes,weshouldseekprofessionalhelp fromaqualifiedperson.
