A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the New London Barn Playhouse!
The snow has melted, summer is finally here, and we once again raise the curtain on another exciting season within the Barn Playhouse! The winter has been jam-packed with auditions and interviews. With over 1,500 applicants from all over the country, we are filling nearly 140 positions for talented artists to join us this summer. The Barn Playhouse continues to offer a unique opportunity to see young, Broadway- caliber talent right here on Main Street in New London.
With that said, the Barn Playhouse isn’t just for summer programming anymore. The year has continued to be a unique and rewarding one with growing programs and community partnerships. Our Fleming Center for Artistic Development has been flourishing with educational programming and performances. With over 500 students involved in educational programs and over 4,000 audience members attending performances over the last 9 months, we are trailblazing into a leading performing arts and education center in New England while continuing to serve our patrons, partners, and the greater community. If you have not yet joined us in this wonderful facility, we hope you will visit in the future.
We invite you to sit back (perhaps on a pillow) and be transported. You do not want to miss any moment of another exciting summer at the Barn Playhouse, as you see a side-splitting romp in an English countryside cottage that will leave you in stitches and a hair raising, toe-tapping musical straight from the 60’s that will have you dancing in the aisles. Join us and take in the celebrated songs of a classic Disney tale filled with magic, joy, and family or a new musical about love, romance and the way our lives are forever changed by the people who enter it. You will find delight in a glorious musical that helps us find our voice and a slew of exciting events to entertain you all summer long. It promises to be a season filled with laughter, empathy, perseverance, and joy.
I want to take this moment to thank you for making the Barn Playhouse a part of your story. We are proud to embark on our 93rd year of producing high-quality theater in this community. Whether you have enjoyed performances at the Barn since you were a child, tread the boards yourself, or have only recently discovered us, we are honored that you include us in your summer.
We thank you for being a part of our family and for your generous support.

Welcome back to the Barn Playhous! Thanks for joining us for our 93rd season! We are excited to welcome our newest group of interns - actors, stage managers, and technical staff, all eager to learn about working in professional theater and ready to entertain you. In addition to our professional productions, our summer Education Programs provide fabulous opportunities with camps and classes for children and teenagers to learn about storytelling, acting, singing, dancing, and working with others to create art! The Junior Interns have several performances throughout the summer, and they are an excellent way for children to experience theater. Please be sure to enjoy their productions this summer.
We set our sights on creativity, opportunity, and a devotion to achieve Theater Excellence. We will invest to produce the best performances and showcase top talent, be valued as the region’s leading source for exceptional and accessible education, and broaden our financial model to achieve sustainability and growth.

A Short History of the New London Barn Playhouse 93 YEARS AND COUNTING
The New London Barn Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating summer theater in New Hampshire, a distinction that has gained it inclusion in the State’s Register of Historic Places.
In the summer of 1933, Mrs. Josephine Etter Holmes, Chair of the Department of Speech at Mount Holyoke College, came to town with four female students. With the assistance of colleagues at Colby Junior College and male actors drawn from the community, the group established the New London Players of New Hampshire. Performances began on July 11th in front of a sold-out audience at Whipple Memorial Hall. Three one-act plays were presented that night. Tickets were 50 cents; pillows a nickel. The local citizenry provided props, costumes, and ushers. That winter, Mrs. Holmes purchased the circa 1820 Everett Barn on Main Street. Local carpenter Horace Stanley was hired to turn the hayloft into a balcony and add a box office window under the front stairs. Patrons sat on long wooden benches on July 12, 1934 to see the opening night performance of the drama Milestones. Dr. H. Leslie Sawyer, President of Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College), was the Barn Playhouse’s first usher.
The advent of World War II brought significant change. Most summer theaters closed, many never to reopen, but the Barn Playhouse soldiered on with a slimmed-down schedule. Mrs. Holmes sold the Playhouse in 1948 to N. Warren Weldon, who in turn sold it to Norman Leger in 1955. A Nebraska native and graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, Norman would guide the Barn Playhouse for the next half century. He introduced musical comedy by producing Finian’s Rainbow in 1956, and little by little he switched the emphasis from plays to the primarily musical comedy format of today.
Many Barnies have gone on to great acclaim in the entertainment business. Sandy Dennis won two Tony Awards on Broadway and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Stephen Schwartz, famed composer of Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, and many more, served as the Barn Playhouse’s Music Director in the 1960s. Emmy Award-winner Phillip Rosenthal was the creator and chief writer for Everybody Loves Raymond. Choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw won a Tony Award for his direction of the smash hit The Book of Mormon. Kyle Jean-Baptiste (a 2013 Acting Intern) was the youngest, as well as the first African American, actor to perform the role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway. Taye Diggs, Laura Linney, and countless others have praised their time at the Barn Playhouse as being crucial to their later success.
Our alumni community includes hundreds of individuals who are sharing their talents and gifts with the world. They are a cherished part of our history. We know many more will enter our community as new “Barnies” and continue this legacy. Here are some examples of alumni from recent years and the work they have done and continue to do. There are countless others to share, but here is a small look: Talia Suskauer ‘15 Broadway: Be More Chill, Wicked (Elphaba), Colton Ryan ‘14 Tony Award-Nominated Broadway: New York, New York, Pedro Garza ‘17 Broadway: Hamilton, Dancin’, Kennedy Caughell ‘11 Broadway: Beautiful, Paradise Square, Kathryn Allison ‘14 Broadway: Company, Aladdin, Wicked, and Alexander Robinson ‘18 Co-Producer Broadway: New York, New York, A Beautiful Noise, and The Piano Lesson.
The quality of the productions has never been better. In 2008, Carol Dunne brought a new level of artistic achievement and energy to the Barn Playhouse. Her work over seven years led to many awards, as well as a general recognition among our peers that the Barn Playhouse is the premier producer of musicals in the state. In 2015, Keith Coughlin was named Executive Artistic Director and has navigated the Barn Playhouse through wonderfully creative and challenging times.
In 2020, the Barn Playhouse was forced to cancel the scheduled season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was able to produce a live radio play to keep the years counting. In October 2020, the Play A Part Campaign was launched and construction began to improve the experience for patrons, artists, and staff. In 2021, the pandemic was still present, so performances were presented as a “Summer Under the Stars” under a tent on the campus of Colby-Sawyer College.
In May 2022, the Play A Part campaign came to a close and projects including the new Fleming Center for Artistic Development, administrative office expansion, elevators in both buildings for accessibility, paved parking lot, theater-level restrooms, expanded porch, larger box office, and a courtyard were available for all to enjoy. This initiative created the Barn Playhouse’s new face on Main Street and will ensure this historic landmark entertains and educates many generations for years to come.

AMARA BERHAN
What was your favorite show you performed in at the Barn Playhouse?
I loved every show and role I performed at the Barn Playhouse, but my favorite would have to be playing Sarah Brown in Guys & . I cherish so many memories from that production, especially the surprise concert performances and the improv session Izzy Baker and I shared when we had to hold the show on opening night. I will always look back on that show and my summer at the Barn Playhouse with so much fondness.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently on the North American Tour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical as Arabia (one of the Lady Marmalade’s) and understudying Satine! This is a dream show for me and I’m so honored to be a part of it.
What makes the Barn Playhouse so special?
The Barn Playhouse is so special because it allows for young collegiate performers to get professional experience and learn from/work with actors and creatives that we otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to work with so early on in our careers. I learned so much during my summer at the Barn Playhouse, and I’m so proud to be a Barnie!
ALEXANDER ROBERTSON
What was your favorite show you performed in at the Barn Playhouse?
Newsies was the highlight of my time at the Barn Playhouse! To this day, it remains one of my favorite shows I’ve ever performed in. The entire creative team brought out the best in every aspect of the production. Our show was full of high energy, heart, and community—three themes that I associate dearly with my experience at NLBP in 2018.
What are you currently working on?
I was most recently seen on stage overseas as Prince Eric in a new stage adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid aboard Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish. Offstage, as a Broadway co-producer, I recently opened the Broadway revival of GYPSY starring six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald.
What advice do you have for the 2025 acting intern company?
Give yourself grace and enjoy every moment. You will meet some of the most amazing people who will stick with you throughout your artistic journey. Remember, each day is an opportunity to learn and grow. Small steps lead to big change!
