A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the New London Barn Playhouse!
The snow has melted, summer is finally here and we once again raise the curtain on another exciting season!
We now celebrate our 91st year, welcoming an extraordinary new Acting Company, many beloved returning Barnie alumni and accomplished guest artists from across the country. In addition to those you see on stage, we celebrate our outstanding, awardwinning designers, musicians, technical staff, administrative staff, production staff, education staff, volunteers, ushers and a new Kitchen Manager and chef! The Barn is a thriving community of over 120 individuals, all of whom are integral to our mission of providing you, our audience, with the highest quality theatrical performances comprised of emerging artists and established professionals. We celebrate each member of this vast, bustling organization and the tireless commitment, talent and passion each person brings to the Barn Playhouse.
The year has continued to be a unique and rewarding one at the Barn Playhouse. Our new Fleming Center for Artistic Development has been alive with educational programming and performances. If you have not joined us in this new facility, we hope you will visit in the future.
We now invite you to sit back (perhaps on a pillow), and be transported to new worlds. You do not want to miss any moment of another exciting summer at the Barn Playhouse, as you see a side-splitting, yet touching spelling bee, or a heart-wrenching and stunning performance by the innovative Billie Holiday. Join us and take in the celebrated songs from the classic musical, Guys and Dolls, or discover a new musical that brings the remarkable career of the beloved Carole King to life. You will find delight in the ups and downs of a New York City restaurant reservationist and embrace a blast from the past as we follow a wedding singer from the 1980s. It promises to be a season filled with joy, empathy, and perseverance. It is our honor to share music, laughter, tears and delight with you for another exciting season ahead.
We continue to be deeply proud of our past, our tradition and our history. It is a privilege to be a part of the legacy of this great theater while continuing to grow, evolve and welcome the next generation of great actors and theater professionals.
We thank you for being a part of our family and for your generous support.

YOUR THEATER FOR THE SUMMER!
Welcome to the 91st season of the Barn Playhouse!
The cavalcade of productions this season has something for everyone – from the familiar Guys and Dolls to the less-often produced Lady Day. This year’s interns come from distinguished theater training programs across the country. The costume and scenery shops have ample room for stitchers and carpenters to produce stunning outfits and sets for them. And even the bathrooms are now a short walk away.
The Barn Playhouse Board takes seriously its role as stewards of the investments you have all made in the theater. The new and refurbished venues are a direct response to the thoughts and suggestions you have shared over the years in how to make this an even better setting for your favorite productions. We are mindful of the sound groundwork that the DeMilles and Norman Leger put in place and we hope to continue to follow in their footsteps toward another century of production.
Yes, we are just 9 years away from turning 100 and have already begun to develop a strategic plan on what that will mean to the future of the Barn Playhouse. We hope that you will continue to support our work as a nonprofit theater in changing times both for a playhouse and as a community resource.
Please bring your friends. And rent a pillow to see the shows better – still a great buy at just 5¢!

A Short History of the New London Barn Playhouse 91 YEARS AND COUNTING
The New London Barn Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating summer theater in New Hampshire, a distinction that has gained it inclusion in the State’s Register of Historic Places.
In the summer of 1933, Mrs. Josephine Etter Holmes, Chair of the Department of Speech at Mount Holyoke College, came to town with four female students. With the assistance of colleagues at Colby Junior College and male actors drawn from the community, the group established the New London Players of New Hampshire. Performances began on July 11th in front of a sold-out audience at Whipple Memorial Hall. Three one-act plays were presented that night. Tickets were 50 cents; pillows a nickel. The local citizenry provided props, costumes, and ushers. That winter, Mrs. Holmes purchased the circa 1820 Everett Barn on Main Street. Local carpenter Horace Stanley was hired to turn the hayloft into a balcony and add a box office window under the front stairs. Patrons sat on long wooden benches on July 12, 1934 to see the opening night performance of the drama Milestones. Dr. H. Leslie Sawyer, President of Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College), was the Barn Playhouse’s first usher.
The advent of World War II brought significant change. Most summer theaters closed, many never to reopen, but the Barn Playhouse soldiered on with a slimmed-down schedule. Mrs. Holmes sold the Playhouse in 1948 to N. Warren Weldon, who in turn sold it to Norman Leger in 1955. A Nebraska native and graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, Norman would guide the Barn Playhouse for the next half century. He introduced musical comedy by producing Finian’s Rainbow in 1956, and little by little he switched the emphasis from plays to the primarily musical comedy format of today.
Many Barnies have gone on to great acclaim in the entertainment business. Sandy Dennis won two Tony Awards on Broadway and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Stephen Schwartz, famed composer of Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, and many more, served as the Barn Playhouse’s Music Director in the 1960s. Emmy Award-winner Phillip Rosenthal was the creator and chief writer for Everybody Loves Raymond. Choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw won a Tony Award for his direction of the smash hit The Book of Mormon.
Judy Kuhn, a three-time Tony Award nominee, was the original Cosette in Les Miserables on Broadway, and Kyle Jean-Baptiste (a 2013 Acting Intern) was the youngest, as well as the first African American, actor to perform the role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway. Taye Diggs, Laura Linney, and countless others have praised their time at the Barn Playhouse as being crucial to their later success.
Our alumni community includes hundreds of individuals who are sharing their talents and gifts with the world. They are a cherished part of our history. We know many more will enter our community as new “Barnies” and continue this legacy. Here are some examples of alumni from recent years and the work they have done and continue to do. There are countless others to share, but here is a small look: Talia Suskauer ‘15 Broadway: Be More Chill, Wicked (Elphaba), Colton Ryan ‘14 Tony Award-Nominated Broadway: New York, New York, Pedro Graza ‘17 Broadway: Hamilton, Dancin’, Kennedy Caughell ‘11 Broadway: Beautiful, Paradise Square, Kathryn Allison ‘14 Broadway: Company, Aladdin, Wicked, and Alexander Robinson ‘18 Co-Producer Broadway: New York, New York, A Beautiful Noise, and The Piano Lesson.
The quality of the productions has never been better. In 2008, Carol Dunne brought a new level of artistic achievement and energy to the Barn Playhouse. Her work over seven years led to many awards, as well as a general recognition among our peers that the Barn Playhouse is the premier producer of musicals in the state. In 2015, Keith Coughlin was named Executive Artistic Director and has navigated the Barn Playhouse through wonderfully creative and challenging times.
In 2020, the Barn Playhouse was forced to cancel the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in October 2020, the Play A Part Campaign was launched and construction began to improve the experience for patrons, artists, and staff. In 2021, the pandemic was still present, so performances were presented as a “Summer Under the Stars” under a tent on the campus of Colby-Sawyer College.
In May 2022, the Play A Part campaign came to a close and projects including the new Fleming Center for Artistic Development, administrative office expansion, elevators in both buildings for accessibility, paved parking lot, theater-level restrooms, expanded porch, larger box office, and a courtyard were available for all to enjoy. This initiative created the Barn Playhouse’s new face on Main Street and will ensure this historic landmark entertains and educates many generations for years to come.

COLTON RYAN
What was your favorite show you performed in at the Barn Playhouse?
My favorite show I worked on at the Barn Playhouse was Damn Yankees because that’s where I fell in love with my fiancé. She was Lola and I was Joe, and whatever Lola wants, Lola gets!
What are you currently working on?
I’m about to open a brand new Broadway musical, New York, New York! Come on, come through!
What makes the Barn Playhouse so special?
I don’t know if it’s Chicken or the Egg, but I know that only good people are Barnies. Everyone I’ve met that’s come from that trusty old Barn Playhouse is absolutely salt of the Earth. Whether it’s something in the Cubbyland water or a testament to how good people find each other, but it’s no coincidence that Barnies are so kind, compassionate, and welcoming; those are the values painted into those iconic red wood walls. Barnie 4 Life!!!
KATHRYN ALLISON
What was your favorite show you performed in at the Barn Playhouse?
My favorite show I performed in at the Barn Playhouse was Kiss Me Kate and I played Hattie. It’s in my top 10 favorite musicals of all time so I was so excited to be a part of it. The music is so luscious and it has some of the famous golden age songs of all time. The cast was stellar and we had a great time putting it together and making eachother laugh!
What are you currently working on?
The show I am currently working on is Hercules! This is my second show with Disney and I am playing the role of Despina who is Hercules’ earthly Mother. It's been amazing bringing the show to life and to work with folks I have admired for so long. I'm also writing music and I'm in a new group called The Brat Pack that pays homage to the Rat Pack as well as jazzing up some of Broadway's most iconic tunes.
What advice do you have for the 2023 acting intern company?
The advice that I would give to the 2023 acting intern company is that your path is your own. Trust me, I still have difficulty with taking that advice. But it’s true! What is meant to be yours, will never pass you. And, keep learning! There is always more to learn in this industry and I haven't stopped taking classes since I left college.
For more than 135 years, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust has contributed to the economic health and vitality of the communities we serve.
