It brings me great joy to welcome you back to the New London Barn Playhouse.
It has been nearly three years since we have been able to open the Barn Playhouse doors and invite you in to be entertained within these hallowed walls. In the summer of 2021, we celebrated the ability to come back together during our “Summer Under the Stars”, but there is nothing like being back in the Barn. Welcome home!
As we look back on all that we have experienced in these past months, we feel great excitement in the fact that we are together, celebrating the 90th Summer Season of the New London Barn Playhouse. We hope that you will be transported and relish in the ability to enjoy live theater, in-person, indoors, once again. We celebrate a remarkable 90 years of theater within these walls and a rich history of so many productions beloved by generations of Barn audiences.
While we celebrate this historic milestone, additionally, we celebrate an opportunity to invite you into the new spaces of the Barn Playhouse, including the stunning new Fleming Center for Artistic Development. We have been humbled by the enthusiasm and support for our Play A Part campaign. Enhancements to our organization have become a reality
before our eyes. None of this would have been possible without the gifts from so many who love the Barn Playhouse. We are incredibly grateful for this support, and we hope you enjoy these enhancements to your Barn experience.
We now invite you to sit back (perhaps on a pillow) and be transported to new worlds. Perhaps you will now enter the world of an intense Broadway audition and experience the powerful feeling of doing what you love at all costs. You might find yourself inside a quaint perfumerie where love blooms between two unlikely companions. You may enter a Parisian apartment where hijinks emerge behind every door. Perhaps, you will join the world of a taverna in the Greek Isles where music resonates in every moment and family prevails. You might take a journey that has you kicking off your Sunday shoes. Finally, you may find yourself discovering someone special under the Northern Lights. It is our honor to share music, laughter, tears, and joy with you for another exciting season.
We continue to be deeply proud of our past, our tradition, and our history. It is a privilege to be a part of the legacy of this great theater while continuing to grow, evolve, and welcome the next generation of great actors and theater professionals.
We thank you for being a part of our family and for your generous support.

YOUR THEATER FOR THE SUMMER!
Dear Theatergoer & Patron of the Barn:
Welcome back to the Barn Playhouse!
Much has changed since your last visit here. The historic timbers of the Main Stage have new companions. The familiar weathered beams are now joined by new ones, freshly formed and forged.
Yes, the New London Barn Playhouse has changed a great deal since your last visit—sweeping improvements have transformed the campus. With gifts from over 620 individuals and families, the Barn has changed costumes many times over. Great boulders were dug up from the old disheveled parking lot to become elements of a new landscape. A circular courtyard was built between Red House and the Theater, in the best New England tradition. Bricks by the thousands were laid to guide you to the main stage. The familiar but sagging porch was rebuilt. To me, it resembles a sturdy wooden ship steaming down Main Street displaying a mighty new deck that allows for nightly viewings of the “passengers” below. A third building, the Fleming Center, rises up from the ground to complete the symmetry of the campus. By night, soft lights now grace the summer pathways, leading conversationists in different directions. By day, the modernized tech shops hum with activity in spacious new state-of-the-art quarters. We improved the air quality, rest facilities, and even the floor in the Fleming Center that support our young dancers’ feet.
The board, staff and company of the New London Barn Playhouse deeply appreciate each and every gift that enables and sustains our season, a season that no longer ends in September but will now continue with community educational programs and offerings throughout the year.
We trust you’ll find the enhancements as pleasing as the performances. Take a look around at what your gifts have built—a true center for the arts on Main Street in the heart of New London. Next time you’re strolling up the front walkway to the Fleming Center, stop and look down. You’ll see a heart formed in red bricks, which represents the heart and spirit of the performing arts that will take place on this campus, not only this summer but for years to come.
Enjoy the show!

WAYS TO GIVE
Producing a full summer season of professional theater is costly. Ticket sales cover only about 60% of our annual operating expenses. The balance comes from the contributions of our patrons and friends – and it is those contributions that enable us to produce extraordinary work.
Please consider a gift in support of the music, laughter, and fantastic performances that you see on our stage summer after summer.
THE ANNUAL CAMPAIGN
Ticket sales only provide 60% of the revenue needed to create the theater you love. Supporting the Annual Campaign helps to make the 2022 Summer Season possible and supports operations for the current season only.
THE DEMILLE FUND
Established in 2017, this special fund honors the legacy of Tom DeMille for his and his wife Wynne’s decades of unflappable commitment to the Barn, doing whatever was needed to move the Barn forward.
Contributions to the DeMille Fund will be designated as multi-year, general purpose gifts directed wherever they are needed most.
THE NORMAN LEGER SOCIETY
Norman Leger purchased the New London Barn Playhouse in 1955 and over the next 50 years guided the Barn through artistic developments, financial dilemmas, building renovations, and a changing world. His legacy is enormous and his memorial is the beloved Barn Playhouse.
You can honor his legacy by following in his footsteps with a planned gift, which can take many forms such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, and deferred gifts.
Consider a gift to the Barn Playhouse today and support our legacy of music, laughter, and award-winning theater!

A Short History of the New London Barn Playhouse
The New London Barn Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating summer theater in New Hampshire, a distinction that has gained it inclusion in the State’s Register of Historic Places.
In the summer of 1933, Mrs. Josephine Etter Holmes, Chair of the Department of Speech at Mount Holyoke College, came to town with four female students. With the assistance of colleagues at Colby Junior College and male actors drawn from the community, the group established the New London Players of New Hampshire. Performances began on July 11th in front of a sold-out audience at Whipple Memorial Hall. Three one-act plays were presented that night. Tickets were 50 cents; pillows a nickel. The local citizenry provided props, costumes, and ushers. That winter, Mrs. Holmes purchased the circa 1820 Everett Barn on Main Street. Local carpenter Horace Stanley was hired to turn the hayloft into a balcony and add a box office window under the front stairs. Patrons sat on long wooden benches on July 12, 1934 to see the opening night performance of the drama Milestones Dr. H. Leslie Sawyer, President of Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College), was the Barn Playhouse’s first usher.
The advent of World War II brought significant change. Most summer theaters closed, many never to reopen, but the Barn Playhouse soldiered on with a slimmed-down schedule. Mrs. Holmes sold the Playhouse in 1948 to N. Warren Weldon, who in turn sold it to Norman Leger in 1955. A Nebraska native and graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, Norman would guide the Barn Playhouse for the next half century. He introduced musical comedy by producing Finian’s Rainbow in 1956, and little by little he switched the emphasis from plays to the primarily musical comedy format of today.
The theater has undergone great changes over the years, with the addition of front and back porches, improvements to seating, stage, and production areas, and the installation of air conditioning. The Barn Playhouse’s mission has also evolved over time, with growing emphasis on the education of emerging artists. A typical company consists of a core group of about 25 Acting and Technical Interns, all carefully selected through an exhaustive casting and hiring process, who are surrounded both on the stage and behind the scenes by a cadre of theater professionals.
Many Barnies have gone on to great acclaim in the entertainment business. Sandy Dennis won two Tony Awards on Broadway and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Stephen Schwartz, famed composer of Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, and many more, served as the Barn Playhouse’s Music Director in the 1960s. Emmy Award-winner Phillip Rosenthal was the creator and chief writer for Everybody Loves Raymond, and multiple Award-winner Tom Fontana created, wrote, and produced the long-running TV series St. Elsewhere. Choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw won a Tony Award for his direction of the smash hit The Book of Mormon. Judy Kuhn, a three-time Tony Award nominee, was the original Cosette in Les Miserables on Broadway, and Kyle Jean-Baptiste (a 2013 Acting Intern) was the youngest, as well as the first African American, actor to perform the role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway. Taye Diggs, Laura Linney, and countless others have praised their time at the Barn Playhouse as being crucial to their later success.
The quality of the productions has never been better. In 2008, Carol Dunne brought a new level of artistic achievement and energy to the Barn Playhouse. Her work over seven years led to many awards, as well as a general recognition among our peers that the Barn Playhouse is the premier producer of musicals in the state. In 2015, Keith Coughlin was named Executive Artistic Director and has navigated the Barn Playhouse through wonderfully creative and challenging times.
In 2020, the Barn Playhouse was forced to cancel the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in October 2020, the Play A Part Campaign was launched and construction began to improve the experience for patrons, artists, and staff. In 2021, the pandemic was still present, so performances were presented as a “Summer Under the Stars” under a tent on the campus of Colby-Sawyer College.
In May 2022, the Play A Part campaign came to a close and projects including the new Fleming Center for Artistic Development, administrative office expansion, elevators in both buildings for accessibility, paved parking lot, theater-level restrooms, expanded porch, larger box office, and a courtyard were available for all to enjoy. This initiative created the Barn Playhouse’s new face on Main Street and will ensure this historic landmark entertains and educates many generations for years to come.
Fleming Center for Artistic Development Convenient rehearsal space, new scene shop, and a significant opportunity for new classes, camps, and community activities.
“PLAY A PART” CAMPAIGN ENSURES THE FUTURE OF THE NEW LONDON BARN PLAYHOUSE
The Play A Part Campaign was launched in August, 2020 to fund an exciting and improved future for the New London Barn Playhouse. The campaign was developed and managed internally with a committee of community volunteers, staff, and board members. All the brochures and marketing materials were designed by a ‘Barnie’ acting intern alumnus.
This next ‘act’ enabled us to take an important step forward to upgrade the facilities and work conditions, improve the patron experience, significantly
expand our education program, preserve and maintain the historic buildings, and continue to produce the highest standard of theater excellence.
The campaign successfully concluded in March, 2022. Over 620 generous donors, including 125 ‘Barnie’ alumni, helped us exceed our initial funding goal. Thank you to everyone who helped create the Barn Playhouse’s new face on Main Street and will ensure this historic landmark entertains and educates many generations for years to come.

2022 | ADMIN & PRODUCTION STAFF
SUNNY SCABORA (Assistant Technical Director) is delighted to be able to participate in the revelries at New London Barn Playhouse! He is a performance major at Midwestern State University. Some of his favorite work was as ATD for MSU’s production of Big Fish, ATD for MSU’s production of Art, and for working as both an actor (Harry/Martin) and Master Carpenter for MSU’s production of Cloud 9.
IZZY SENIOR (Administrative Intern) is thrilled to be a part of the Administrative side of the Barn Playhouse this summer! She is from Andover, Massachusetts and growing up, she frequently visited her grandparents in New London and has adored the area ever since. For the past three years, Izzy has participated in the Junior Intern Program at the Barn Playhouse and has fallen in love with the supportive community created by NLBP. She has been participating in Theater productions for the past 10 years, and has lots of experience both in front of and behind the curtain. In addition to performing, Izzy has helped backstage in multiple productions as a Director’s assistant and manages multiple social media platforms. This summer, she hopes to expand her knowledge of sales and marketing while helping out the Barn in any way she can.
CARTER SMITH (Company Manager) is thrilled to be spending the summer at The New London Barn Playhouse. After graduating from Western Connecticut State University in the spring of 2021 he was the General Manager and Marketing Director for the Granite Theatre in Westerly, Rhode Island before coming to New London. Previously he interned at The Peterborough Players in Peterborough, New Hampshire and created his own children’s theater program for the City of Groton, CT Parks and Recreation. A big thank you to his parents for the support and the New London Barn Playhouse team.
KIMBERLY ANNE TUTOR (Costume Shop Manager) discovered her passion for pattern and her passion for making in seemingly disparate worlds. The beauty she discovered in the world of abstract mathematics led her through her undergraduate studies at Bennington College where she received a B.A. in Math and Philosophy and took her as far as Paris where she studied Number Theory at the College de France. Seeking out new opportunities for creative collaboration and new mediums to represent and share her work, she left the academic math world over a decade ago to pursue a design career. As a garden designer Kimberly found big joy in the process of collaboratively making beautiful spaces while building communities. Working as a designer she found a renewed inquiry into what drives her as a visual storyteller and creative problem solver. Her love of finding the right material and tool to craft and complete a design deepened as she expanded her work into the design of sustainable clothing and knitwear. Working with textiles, she had finally found a place to integrate her abstract love of pattern and her love of building and making things. In the fall of 2021, she received a certificate in Costume Design & Wardrobe from the New York Fashion Institute of Technology. Fresh off her first production as costume designer (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Holyoke Community College), Kimberly could not be more excited to work and learn with the New London Barn Playhouse community this summer as the Costume Shop Manager.
KELSEY WALKER (Marketing/Box Office Associate) is a rising senior studying Musical Theatre and Business for Entertainment at American University in Washington, DC. Favorite recent credits include Camillo (The Winter’s Tale), Ensemble (The Boy Detective Fails), Princess of France (Love’s Labour’s Lost) at the Barn Playhouse, Sophie (Mamma Mia!), and Elle Woods (Legally Blonde). She is the Music Director of her a cappella group Dime a Dozen, and often arranges pieces for the group. A former JI, Kelsey is thrilled to return to the Barn Playhouse family and explore the business side of the Barn Playhouse this summer! In her free time she enjoys writing and playing music, video games, knitting, and experimenting with all types of recipes.
AARON A. WATSON* (Production Stage Manager) Aaron is thrilled to be coming back to the Barn! Select Credits: Titanic (Milwaukee Rep), A Christmas Carol (Broadway SF), Shining On, The World Goes ‘Round (New London Barn Playhouse), Heisenberg, The Sound of Music (Northern Stage), MacGyver The Musical (Telluride Theater), The 39 Steps (Theatreworks SV), Cruel Intentions National Tour (Maximum Entertainment), Chefs, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Bring It LIVE (Mills Entertainment), Cirque Dreams Holidaze (Cirque Dreams), The Prima Donnettes (Florida Studio Theatre), Big Fish, Little Shop of Horrors, The Adams Family Musical, (Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute).

She thanks Amy, Cynthia, and Matthew for being her inspiration this year, and Sabrina for her encouragement towards joining this lovely community.
