Repairs made easy: Parts for electric parking brakes directly from the OEM Let’s face it: cars are a complicated business. Vehicle technologies today are advancing faster than ever, parts and products have become more and more complex. While many of these new developments directly benefit the safety and comfort of the driver, the associated repairs often present workshops with a difficult and time-consuming task.

STRIVING FOR A SUSTAINABLE AFTERMARKET

Among the most urgent issues facing contemporary society, environmental sustainability is perhaps the most decisive. The reflection on how to leave a better world to our descendants - accelerated by the current pandemic - and the international initiatives aimed at reducing CO2 emissions, must necessarily take also into account the automotive industry, which must do its part and contribute concretely to reducing the overall environmental impact of its activities and products.

The aftermarket sector must also stand up to these challenges, particularly since it is increasingly urged by the automakers oriented to the irreversible process of decarbonizing the planet and to energy efficiency strategies with the support of the various national governments (Paris Agreement 2030) with fiscal and administrative policies. These demands consider electric mobility to be a concrete solution for reducing and curbing concentrations of pollutants, above all in urban areas, bearing in mind that climate change can be prevented, especially by using energy generated from renewable sources.

As part of this virtuous process aimed at reducing the environmental impact in the manufacturing (and disposal) of motor vehicles, everyone in the automotive industry - already struggling with disruptive trends such as self-driving vehicles and connected cars, digitalization, Big Data - is called to do his part, starting from the processes upstream of the production chain.

AFTERMARKET AND SUSTAINABILITY The commitment towards environmental sustainability of the aftermarket supply chain and its operators entails different tasks and impacts.

Component manufacturers should reduce the emissions generated by their production processes and control the indirect emissions of their energy suppliers. Together with automakers, the component manufacturers constitute an eco-system that proceeds together towards decarbonisation, also including distribution and logistics. Repairers too, must also become an active part of this system, adopting correct behaviours and preparing to face the deep changes of the mobility world. Car repairers and body shops are already experiencing the effects of a car fleet that is orienting to hybrid and electric engines in an irreversible process.

TOWARDS ELECTRIC MOBILITY It is not the cars we use every day that contribute the most to greenhouse gas emissions: road transport accounts for about 11.9% of global greenhouse gas emissions and about 16-18% of CO2 emissions, while the auto industry generates about half (source: Bain & Company, 2021).

However vehicles must contribute to the overall reduction of emissions. And Italy has one of the oldest car fleet in Europe: out of 38.5 million cars on the road, 30% are over 15 years (Euro 0-3).

Adding Euro 4 models (10.4 million), obsolete cars are 56.4% of the total vehicles in circulation (UNRAE 2020 data). But things are changing.

The Italian car market, hit by the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, closed 2020 with a -27.9% drop, just over 1.38 million new registrations (Anfia 2021 data). Negative results, whose

effects have been limited by government incentives that led to the scrapping of over 120 thousand cars, savings more than 155 thousand tons of CO2 compared to the annual average. During 2020, the registrations of traditional-powered cars (-41% diesel and -39% petrol powered) decreased, yet alternative engines grew by 35%.

And sales of hybrid and electric cars, thanks to the positive effects of the Ecobonus, increased by 122%!

CHALLENGES IN THE PIPELINE The rise of electric mobility represents a rather defined response to the environmental emergency and the aftermarket world is facing important challenges: the transition to greener models and the companies’ energy policy while continuing to operate on the contemporary market, still made up of petrol and diesel powered cars, and getting ready for the radical change that will come when the volume of electric cars becomes significant and will involve structural changes throughout the supply chain. In electric vehicles, for example, engine and gearbox components are expected to decrease by up to 70%, a reduction that will have a major impact on production, distribution, inventories and logistics. In the car repair shop, the complexity of tasks will increases and adequate training will be needed.

The relationship with customers will also change, so that new services and partnerships with specialized operators (insurance companies, fleet operators, energy suppliers) need to be developed timely. The environmental emergency must be transformed into a positive driving factor full of new opportunities. 

This is a sensible move because the engines in question have a deserved reputation for their longevity. Because of the high mileage achieved during these vehicles’ lifetimes, therefore, a second timing belt change may well be necessary. If not already carried out, the oil pump belt should also be replaced at that stage. And the new PRO kits mean that mechanics have all the parts immediately to hand for just such an eventuality.

Tip: If you want to play absolutely safe, the oil pump belt should always be replaced at the same time as the water pump because changing the timing belt is a really time-consuming repair. It

is therefore more efficient and safer to replace such minor consumables at the same time, especially as they have already been removed. The PRO kits are therefore actually always the right choice.

Workshops love the PRO kits. The idea of sustainable development has become one of the most important topics of public debate on how we should shape the future of our economy. It must also include a sustainable automotive aftermarket. However, there are obstacles in the way of achieving this which need to be removed as quickly as possible.

Sustainable development means management that burdens the natural environment as little as possible, all with the thought that we would have something to leave for future generations. It is primarily about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the consumption of raw materials, and over time creating a circular economy in which products, materials and raw materials are used for as long as possible and the generation of waste is reduced to a minimum.

CAR SCRAP IS FLOODING THE MARKET The growth of Polish GDP over the three decades, i.e. since the political transformation, has reached an impressive level. Today, Poland is perceived as a country of success, which, even in the covid crisis, makes up for the distance that separates it from highly developed economies. Despite this progress, Polish society still lags behind the wealthy countries of the West in terms of wealth. At the same time, we observe a growing wealth differentiation.

- It is also visible in the automotive parts market.

So we have a group of the wealthiest drivers who use only authorized services, where they buy parts bearing the logos of car manufacturers. There are users who try to reduce the costs of vehicle operation, therefore they prefer to use the services of independent workshops and buy the highest quality parts, but offered under the trademarks of their actual manufacturers, who also supply these elements as Tier 1 suppliers for VM’s assembly plants. Finally, there is a group of the least affluent customers who can only afford cheaper substitutes for budget brands - says Tomasz Bęben, Some of these users are also looking for used parts by browsing offers available on various online platforms. In Poland, elements from disassembly constitute as much as a dozen or so percent of the entire parts market. For comparison, in Western Europe this share is at the level of 3-5%.

DANGEROUS DISASSEMBLY This is where we directly touch on the topic of sustainable development. A significant part of the elements offered on the Internet come from cars disassembled in the gray market. People who deal with such a hidden disassembly most often do not bother with environmental protection regulations, so used operating fluids end up in the sewage system or they are put immediately into the ground, and what remains from the dismantled vehicles, and is not fit for sale, is abandoned in suburban forests .

- Some of the used elements that are introduced to the market in this way cannot be reassembled under the law in force in Poland, due to the risk of safety. Nevertheless, such goods can be bought without any problems, because the law does not prohibit their sale. This legislative inconsistency means that the provisions contained in the 2005 regulation practically remain dead, which anyone can find out by browsing websites with offers.

You can find there, for example, thousands of used pads, brake shoes and discs, or elements of exhaust systems - adds Tomasz Bęben.

It should be mentioned that the list of parts that cannot be reassembled is very short and incomplete. The list lack of a lot of parts that should definitely be found there, because driving safety directly depends on their condition. A striking example here are the used brake calipers and steering gears. It goes without saying that improper operation of these elements may cost lives not only of users of vehicles “repaired” in this way, but also of other road users.

HOW TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT IN NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES? The aforementioned calipers and steering gears are components that are perfectly recyclable in the most ecological form, which is professional remanufacturing. In this way, full-value products are obtained, the technical condition of which is like a brand new part. Safe parts of guaranteed quality can be safely introduced to the market, where they are offered at a competitive price.

Professionally remanufactured parts are a relief not only for your wallet, but also for the environment. It is due to the fact that the so-called “core” of the part is reused, and the production process eliminates those stages that require the greatest amount of raw materials and energy. This in turn translates into much lower emissions compared to producing the same fraction from scratch.

In the ideal model of a balanced aftermarket, all parts suitable for this should go to remanufacturing plants, especially since there are dynamic companies in Poland that give parts a second life.

These are modern, well-equipped plants with the appropriate know-how and trained staff, and their products enjoy an excellent reputation, as evidenced by the fact that they are in demand on the most demanding foreign markets.

Unfortunately, the Polish reality differs from the ideal model, and this is evidenced by the following paradox that Polish companies dealing with remanufacturing are forced to import cores for remanufacturing. In this way, they contribute 

SIDE to environmental protection and contribute to the circular economy, but in other countries, not in Poland.

RATIONAL ARGUMENTS Is it possible to introduce provisions rationally regulating the trade in used parts, taking into account both safety and environmental issues?

Of course yes. However, this requires the will of the legislators, who will take into account substantive arguments from experts and enterprises operating in the independent automotive sector.

There are examples of recently introduced and planned changes that contribute for sustainable development in the aftermarket, e.g. the recently introduced electronic BDO register (waste database). Although this database is still imperfect, it allows to monitor what is happening with the waste generated in the workshops. Another prepared solution in Poland is the proposed “Lubricants Act”, which provides for the introduction of a deposit in the trade in lubricating oils and other tools that will force the appropriate disposal of waste oils, making it impossible to use them, inter alia, for firing heating stoves and thus poisoning the air.

It should be emphasized here that the obligations resulting from these regulations, which must be met by automotive companies, constitute an additional burden for small and medium-sized enterprises, especially now, in times of a pandemic.

However, the industry does not avoid them and scrupulously implements them. Enterprises from the independent automotive market are also implementing voluntary plans aimed at broadly understood environmental protection, including the reduction of the so-called carbon footprint.

It would be great if all these sustainability efforts in the aftermarket were backed up by long-awaited legislative changes. 

If we are talking about a sustainable future, then, first of all, it is worth mentioning what it is and the main aspects it concerns: Sustainability is most often defined as meeting the present’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

Three key aspects are addressed in this regard: economy, environment, and social.

There are two most frequently mentioned industries when we speak about sustainable future – electricity generation and automotive. There is one thing that is common for both sectors - the use of fossil fuels. Talking about the automotive segment, on the one hand, we have information from UNECE that the transport sector remains the primary source of urban air pollution in most countries, contributing up to 80% of urban air pollution in some cities (Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles, 2014). But on the other hand, the car is the most recycled consumer product in the United States.

Speaking about the automotive aftermarket, we need to mention that there is nothing to worry about. The changes in the industry will not happen by surprise. Aftermarket depends on the car parc as the most critical factor affecting the whole market. If we take, for example, the European country with a fleet of 30-40 million, we will see that sales of new cars by 90-95% go to the renewal of the fleet, and not to increase it. Usually, sales of new cars in such markets are 1.5-2 million cars per year.

If we assume that all the cars sold will be zero

emissions and all of them will replace only vehicles with gasoline and diesel engines, then the total parc’s replacement will take 20 years, quite enough time to prepare for such evolutionary changes.

With the example of Norway, we can see that it will not happen in 1 or 2 or 5 years.

The second point – the automotive industry already has very high recycling standards, and the 3R (Reduce, Reuse Recycle) principle applies significantly to the automotive business.

“Reduce” means a reduction in the use of the vehicle, which means lower mileage. The lower is the mileage; the lower is the volume of wear&tear parts like brake pads/discs, plugs, filters, tires, and others. This “reduce” is currently driven by a significant increase in the use of personal mobility devices such as scooters, electric bicycles, gyro scooters, monowheels. Such devices are widely used for short trips (usually less than 1 mile) and reduce cars’ use.

“Re-use”- a vast number of automotive parts like starters, alternators, steering components, and many other spare parts are remanufactured and/ or repaired by independent suppliers around the world. 

ENVIRONMENT & ENERGY COMMUNICATION MOBILITY MEDICAL

Recycling, as already mentioned at the beginning of the article, the automotive industry is one of the most advanced in this matter. Currently, almost 100 percent of cars are recycled in the United States. The U.S. auto recycling industry is a critical, market-oriented industry with annual sales of more than $ 32 billion. The sector employs more than 140,000 people in more than 9,000 locations across the country.

Every year, the steel industry processes more than 18 million tons of steel from cars. Approximately 86 percent of the vehicle’s material is recycled, re-used, or used for energy recovery. About 60 percent of the passenger vehicle consists of steel and iron. The steel used to make a brand-new car contains at least 25 percent recycled content.

Recycled steel from the old car is used to make the car body, hood, trunk, door, and quarter panels.

Furthermore, speaking about parts, there is another 3R principle – Repair, Remanufacture, Recycle.

“Repair” - are parts in which only the broken or worn parts are changed or even repaired. This is cost-saving and reduces environmental impact.

However, the other parts that remain intact and have not been replaced will have some wear; this makes the repaired parts more susceptible to re-destruction, as most of the pieces will stay ‘old.’

“Remanufacture” - is when the internal parts of a whole part are removed, cleaned, and inspected; only the “shell” remains intact. All critical parts of the product are replaced with new components.

Replacing these internal parts gives the restored product a second life, and that is why these parts can be treated just as well as the new ones because most of their composition is new.

Here is a list of parts that are usually repaired or remanufactured.

For example, for alternators and starters, 50 - 65%, depending on the country, are repaired and/or remanufactured. On average, restored parts are 25 - 40% cheaper than new ones and significantly save raw materials and energy. Recycling is when the part is thoroughly cleaned and melted back into the raw material or as close to the original state as possible.

On average, 90% of automotive parts are repaired, remanufactured, or recycled.

So the bottom line is that the automotive industry, including car manufactures, parts manufacturers, and the whole aftersales segment, are really on the edge of the circular economy. All 3 points of sustainable future that are usually referred to as planet, people, profit are really in use in the automotive industry. Car sales and aftersales provide jobs for many local professionals, make a profit for the whole supply chain from manufacturers to the smallest repair shop, and have the deepest recycling penetration on all levels. 

And we welcome it. Obviously, (no matter how much space missions advance) at the moment we only have one planet, the one we inhabit, and it depends on us to minimize the negative impacts that the passage of humanity infringes on it.

specifically incorporates the environment and the responsibility of companies in it, and that (reactivated) claims that all signatories pursue the implementation of the SDGs. SECTORALLY SPEAKING The UN Global Compact is gathering a multitude of support among companies and sectors of the automotive industry at all levels, global, national, local and private.

And we will proudly mention (and by way of example, for not being exhaustive) three proper names of automotive actors in Spain among the signatories: SERNAUTO, Grupo Antolín and, recently, the announcement in its last congress this February, the addition of FACONAUTO (concessionaires of vehicle manufacturers).

COVENANTS Nothing is free. Many of the advances and comforts we enjoy have taken their toll on the planet and today, with a clear and documented awareness of the havoc wreaked on it, attempts are being made to protect the environment as much as possible, creating alliances that unify the efforts of all groups in the same direction.

We are not going to mention them all, nor to explain their uneven follow-up (let's hope that the United States and its new administration, together with China will join the Davos meetings), but perhaps we could highlight among them the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) created in September 2015 to raise awareness about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, or the UN Global Compact that, among its 10 universal principles,

The automotive sector is one of the strongest sectors in the economies of developed countries (in Spain, in 2019, it contributed 8.5% to GDP directly and up to 11% accounting for indirect contributions). It is also one that has been most concerned and invested so that sustainability is increasing. This is in terms of vehicles and their emissions, the minimizing of the carbon footprint of vehicle component production plants, and aftersales interventions, including controlling end-of-life in treatment centers, which have been protocolized and regularized to the limit.

MANDATORY Our sector, being important, has always been in the spotlight, and for this reason it has seen how the demands of governments have become increasingly restrictive in pursuit of the protection of citizens and the health of the planet.

This has resulted in requirements in the engineering of vehicle engines (and upstream in the components that make them up), and the promotion of cleaner propulsion alternatives (although it would be necessary to debate which ones are really based on their manufacture, to propulsion power or infrastructure). 

SIDE Also, the appearance of increasingly stricter regulations regarding emissions and urban circulation, with delimited zones and time slots that prohibit the circulation of vehicles (in the controversial Madrid Central in the capital of Spain, in Barcelona the also highly protested ZBE -Low Emission Zones-) and that entail many difficulties for the participants (the workshops have raised their complaints before the administrations for the difficulties that they cause them to carry out their business) and, of course, huge economic investments and in time for professional training at all levels, from component manufacturers, constructors, distributors and workshops.

INSIGHTS FROM THE AFTERMARKET WORLD AND BEYOND RESPONSIBILITY But you have to ‘break a spear’ for the automotive industry in all its arenas and say loudly that the sector has responded more than any other. Understanding of the characteristics of sustainable development, that ensure the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, is intensifying day after day.

Not only out of obligation, but also because of the social responsibility and commitment of companies and organizations and, therefore, on many occasions it is included in the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) documents since the managers themselves are clear that the future lies in opening arms to eco trends, which, at the same time, has meant reflections in work formulas that, not infrequently, have meant achieving efficiency.

And those involved in the value chain (I repeat, at all levels) work in this field, locating talent that introduces new perspectives to arrive at more efficient solutions (which is a form of sustainability, by optimizing resources) and giving each increasing preponderance of circular economy products, sporting emblems of operational ecological responsibility (certifications from external entities or private protocols of internal creation in organizations) to be chosen by users (increasingly informed, increasingly aware) among the entire offer available in the market.

It would be necessary (according to the ANFAC employer) to scrap 19 million vehicles in Spain until 2030 to reduce that average because, although the decarbonisation of the parc is being pursued, it cannot but be orderly, progressive and without neglecting technologies, since a current diesel vehicle it emits 90% less NOx than 12-year-olds or older, thanks in part to the particulate filter.

CHALLENGES But much remains to be done. It is obvious. Immersed as we were in a change in the economic cycle, of revision and deep restructuring of the industries, which the COVID-19 pandemic has only aggravated, we have a sector that continues to be in the spotlight, and that suffers from structural problems that, to reach a solution, require the support of many wills.

If we focus on Spain, we have a complex situation with an aging fleet (12.7 years on average) with a high number of vehicles that have serious defects due to excess polluting emissions when passing the Technical Inspection of Vehicles ( ITV): 13.6%, according to the AECA-ITV entity.

But for this a renewal of the fleet is needed that is not achieved (January 2021 started with the largest historical drop in sales of new vehicles, more than 51%, since the figures were collected monthly in 1989) due to the increase in prices of vehicles . The sector (ANFAC, GANVAM, FACONAUTO ...) proposes a new tax that would penalize seniority, in order to advance decarbonization and improve air quality in cities and road safety. … AND THE AFTERMARKET? Throughout the exhibition it has been mentioned that this important business is not exempt from affectation as far as new environmental trends are concerned. Component manufacturers, in addition to working industrially to reduce the carbon footprint, work to provide spare parts for maintenance and replacement in repairs adapted to the new models that incorporate all the technological innovations that seek sustainability: lighter parts, introduction of elements of the circular economy, comprehensive management of product recycling. 

SIDE And of course, the distributors who work to transmit to the clients of the clients, the workshops, the technological training of these new components to support their customers.

So do institutions at the institutional level, which cooperate by providing all the necessary information and training in legislative matters and new technologies, and of course private companies, such as repair networks, which promote reviews in order to increase the pace of vehicles through the workshop and help them reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

INSIGHTS FROM THE AFTERMARKET WORLD AND BEYOND The workshops themselves have always worked in favor of sustainability and one of the problems they struggle with (together with SEPRONA, the specialized division of the Civil Guard) is to eradicate unfair competitors who practice repair without having control over waste that damages the environment so much.

In summary, sustainability, apart from being a trend is a vital need, and the automotive industry as a whole, as an innovative and responsible sector, has worked and works to reach a balance that involves maintaining the industrial and business wealth that sustains it while pursuing technological advances for quality of life and sustainability, although this requires that the administrations form part of a common initiative that should be the task of all.  INSIDE EDITION 23 • APRIL 2021

AUTO PARTS DISTRIBUTION SECTOR IN BRAZIL PROVES THAT IT RESISTS CRISES

It is not new that the distribution sector in Brazil is resilient, as are the other links in the aftermarket chain, such as factory, retail and vehicle repair shops. This is how several entity leaders defined the Brazilian aftermarket during the 26th edition of the Automotive Aftermarket Seminar, in November 2020, held virtually due to health protection measures in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the quarantine, as automotive maintenance was considered an essential service and the workshops maintained service, just as stores and distributors remained in operation, even though in some periods of closed doors, the market was able to move. This condition ensured that the aftermarket surpassed the year with positive results.

The word resilience could not be better applied to the aftermarket and it is not today that it faces the challenges imposed by the unstable economy and government plans for decades. There are traditional companies with a long history of acting well before the automakers settle here. Many are already over 70, 80 years old and others are coming close to a century. ANDAP - National Association of Auto Parts Distributors, completes 50 years of operation in 2021 and integrates the main distribution companies and manufacturers, with a very stable membership that brings together renowned brands and distributors with national representation.

According to the president of ANDAP, Rodrigo Carneiro, in 2020, when the global economy was put to the test with the pandemic, the Brazilian aftermarket, which has unique characteristics, remained strong and has been going through this period with great tenacity, managing to guarantee stability and also preservation of companies’ financial health. For Carneiro, among the factors that help the sector to overcome crises over decades and maintain satisfactory results as it currently happens are the growth of the circulating fleet in recent years, surpassing the 45.9 million mark, as well as the increase in the average age of vehicles that reaches almost 10 years for automobiles and trucks close to 12 years. “The demand arises in the workshops and, with the postponement of the replacement of the used car for the new one, maintenance ends up being necessary even if it is not preventive, it occurs in a corrective way”, he highlights.

Capillarity is another important point as distribution companies are able to serve in all locations with agility and speed through their branches to the thousands of stores and workshops across the country. Although the market is dynamic and in constant transformation, the distribution sector meets the demand at the speed that the sector needs and even with the emergence of new channels, such as e-commerce, the supply of auto parts through the traditional channel is vigorous

and predominant. “We have a market very different from the model in other countries, where aftermarket is not as representative because there are large associative networks that dominate the market. Here in Brazil, the aftermarket is responsible for 80% of the maintenance of the circulating fleet and relationships are a very strong characteristic in the sector ”, he comments.

For 2021, the prospects, in the view of the president of ANDAP, are to maintain the current stable pace of growth. “The focus of the distribution companies must be on the management of the business. Among the challenges of the market there is the gap that exists between the technological development of production and the management technology in the rest of the trade marketing ”, he concludes.

Sustainability - Sustainable measures, in Carneiro’s opinion, are part of the companies’ package of actions to ensure process optimization and cost reduction. The management of resources, as well as people, is essential to ensure the financial health of companies.

Carneiro tells the importance of companies looking for solutions to face the challenges imposed by the pandemic, such as engaging employees to create sustainable practices that avoid waste in all areas. The measures in this sense are favorable and represent a form of management that encourages the interaction and participation of employees to participate with suggestions, aiming at the common good, in addition to generating savings by eliminating unnecessary expenses. 

AFTER COVID-19 COMES WARM-UP 1.5

JOS VELDHUISEN Aftersales Magazine, Chief Editor One thing we have learned from 2020: that the consequences of a global pandemic are huge, including what it costs the health sector to avert such a crisis. The experiences of the past year will serve us well in the present climate discussion.

At the start of a new year, we cannot help but hope that the vaccines are successful and that we will find our way up in 2021. After the pandemic, the climate will be the next major disruptor. The economic impact of the measures to protect the climate will wipe out business models and create new ones.

CLIMATE LAW On Friday 11 December last year, the European government leaders in Brussels stood with their mouths masked-up in front of the cameras of the assembled press. They proudly reported that it

had been agreed that CO2 emissions in ten years, in 2030, must be 55 per cent lower than in 1990.

This will be laid down in a new climate law. A minus of 40 per cent had previously been agreed, but the various governments are ambitious. The Paris agreement from 2015 and the own European Green Deal from 2019 (see box) to give climate priority above all are their motives.

All measures must lead to Europe being climate neutral by 2050 and to prevent global warming by 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius. The European Parliament has even made a proposal to further reduce CO2 emissions to 60 per cent and wants not only Europe as a whole to achieve that standard, but also every EU country individually. This is the only way to prevent further global warming. In June 2021, the European Commission will have to present the content of this new climate law to the European Parliament. It also contains new, more stringent emission requirements for the automotive industry.

UNFEASIBLE Acea, the umbrella organization of car manufacturers in Europe, already saw the storm. A few days before the statement by the government leaders on December 11, they released a piece that addressed the impossibility of further CO2 reduction.

The automotive industry will only be able to satisfy the current politicians through massive bets on fully electric cars. For the time being, that seems too great a challenge for the car and parts industry.

On that 11th December evening, German news channels already speculated about the imminent demise of the German automotive industry and, surprisingly, also about the end of the current repair and maintenance sector, an item that you do not often see in the evening news. Now garage owners were given the floor, they cling to the diesel car like drowning people. The combustion engine is the basis of the business model for their workshops. It was striking that they saw the EV mainly as a customer of the dealer workshop.

For the ordinary, universal garage owner, there is no honor, it was said.

Now such a position is not unexpected, because just like us, the automotive industry in Germany relies on many small, universal SME entrepreneurs, who represent a great potential of voters. The hard lockdown for Christmas that was announced with us and our eastern neighbors did not make politicians more popular. Those entrepreneurs and their trade association also know that and so the drum was and is being played a lot.

MEASURES To ensure that something really happens this time, the European Commission is preparing action plans and measures for various sectors. Important (proposed) measures affecting the mobility sector include: - Three quarters of the transport of goods

by road must be moved to rail and

waterways. The result is less congestion

and fewer trucks.

- There will be more kilometer and toll

charges for road use.

- Investments will be made in one million

charging points for electric cars, with the

Commission contributing strongly to the

financing, especially in sparsely populated regions.

- Consumers must have a “right to repair”:

- Companies will be fined if they unfairly

profile themselves as “green”.

- The circular economy is stimulated

The Green Deal is the Von der Leyen Commission program to combat climate change. With this Green Deal, Europe should become the first climate-neutral continent. The goal is for the European Union to stop contributing to global warming through greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest. Frans Timmermans, the first vice-president of the European Commission, is responsible for this. To make the EU climate neutral by 2050, a roadmap has been drawn up with a range of measures. The European Green Deal covers all sectors of the economy, in particular transport, energy, agriculture, ICT and infrastructure. Enormous investments are required to achieve the targets. An estimated 250 to 300 billion euros extra will have to be invested annually, including in solar and wind energy, and the transition of industries and households to new forms of energy, such as the use of hydrogen. 

Within Europe, this enables more than 98 percent of lead batteries from vehicles to be recovered and a large proportion of the materials contained to be reused. As a result, 90 percent of the materials in lead-acid batteries can be recovered and recycled. 75 percent of the lead in European lead-acid batteries is now obtained from recycled sources.

A recent example of this role is demonstrated in the company’s relationship with Maserati, for which the Dayco team designed and manufactured a tailored solution for the complete BSG (beltintegrated starter generator) hybrid system, also known as P0 Architecture, for the brand’s MHEV (mild-hybrid electric vehicle) engine, in its Ghibli Hybrid.

“To achieve Maserati’s required objectives, each component of the hybrid system has been designed to the highest standards to maximize fuel savings, reduce CO2 emissions and increase the durability of the entire system,” explained Dayco’s Vice President OE Sales and Business Development, Wouter Nijenhuis.

“This has been made possible through the compact design and use of optimized materials to produce the side-arm tensioner, the development of a new poly-V belt incorporating innovative materials and manufacturing processes to guarantee the best coefficient of friction during the lifetime of the engine, and finally, with the new damper pulley, specifically designed to protect the crankshaft of this powerful, MHEV engine.

“Emphasizing our commitment to the relationship with Maserati, the Dayco side-arm tensioner is being produced on a new, dedicated assembly line, which is state-of-the-art for this type of product and equipped with Industry 4.0 technology. Mr. Weber, in 2020, Bosch achieved its target of making all its locations carbon neutral. How important is sustainability – and of course carbon neutrality as well – for Bosch?

The Bosch Group pursues a comprehensive sustainability strategy, which focuses on six megatrends in all: climate, energy, water, urbanization, globalization, and healthcare. When it comes to climate, we set ourselves ambitious targets. In mid-2019, we were the first globally operating enterprise to announce that we would be climate neutral at all our locations worldwide by the end of 2020. According to our internal calculations, we have now achieved this target. In addition, we are continuously investing in the energy efficiency of our locations. By 2030, for example, we want to save 1.7 terawatt-hours of power. At the same time, however, we will be increasing the proportion of renewables in our power supplies. This can be done by expanding our own in-house power generation and by buying green electricity, for example. As early as 2019, Bosch was able to reduce its CO2 emissions by roughly one-third from their 2018 level of 3.3 million metric tons to 1.94 million metric tons. The Bosch Group fully offsets any unavoidable carbon emissions. But we want to get even better. In a next phase, lasting up to

2030, we want to save 15 percent of the emissions arising along the entire value chain. And we also want to pass on our knowledge outside of Bosch. The newly established business unit Bosch Climate Solutions advises manufacturing companies on becoming climate neutral as well as on developing, manufacturing and operating in a resource conserving and climate neutral way.

Bosch Automotive Aftermarket also has a whole series of examples of sustainability in action. Can you tell us about the most important ones?

We are applying various levers in order to contribute to CO2 reduction. They start with simple things such as using economical LED lightbulbs, and using or planning photovoltaic arrays at our locations. And of course, the circular economy, remanufacturing, and our Bosch eXchange program also play an important part. Our goal for the future is to avoid the waste of resources and to reduce emissions along the entire cross-company value chain from procurement to usage.

This means also taking a closer look at things such as packaging, scrapping, excessive transport and logistics effort including reshipments, and the possibility of digitalization, all the way down to workshop level. 

SIDE Obviously, the Bosch eXchange program is wellknown in our industry. How exactly does the program contribute to Bosch Automotive Aftermarket’s sustainability strategy?

HOW IMPORTANT IS SUSTAINABILITY FOR BOSCH?

The Bosch eXchange program is our high-quality solution for vehicle repairs in line with a vehicle’s current value. With it, we encourage the reuse of products and, in this way, the sustainable use of natural resources. Workshops that return old parts, thus making them available for reuse, are joining with Bosch to make a significant contribution to the circular economy. In 2019, Automotive Aftermarket was able to save 3,100 metric tons of various metals by reconditioning products. In CO2 equivalents, that’s roughly 8,600 metric tons.

In more concrete terms, binding this volume of CO2 equivalents would require 680,000 beeches a year. We’re definitely on the right course here.

For customers that go this way with us, we will make our Bosch eXchange offer even more attractive. We minimize capital commitment and simplify the return with the “deposit advantage model”.

Each old part is a resource that we want to reuse as best as possible. Additional we offer repair solutions for example in the area of electronics, where we already today repair control units und therefore avoid waste. We fully realize that the circular economy means additional complexity for all involved right now, but we want to find a simple and lean way of making more sustainability in the aftermarket possible. To achieve this, we have to simplify the processes involved. That’s what we’re working on.

Of course, there are also areas in which we’re currently not making the most of our potential in the aftermarket. I’m thinking here for example of reshipments, all the way to scrapping. What can we achieve with regard to this, if we collaborate cross-company?

Yes, that’s right, we have potential in these fields.

Along the entire value chain, there’s still some room for improvement. In my opinion we definitely need to collaborate here cross-company and

optimize the processes together. Therefore we support already today the initiatives from NEXUS and also other associations. We need to push a new mindset of collaboration, because it’s clear that lots of individuals trying to find the best solution will never achieve as much as if we work together across company boundaries. One example is the field of overstocking and also incorrect stocking. It all starts with the correct part identification. If this is not the case it gives rise to a huge reshipping effort, and in some cases to scrapping.

There are many reasons why this is so, and not all of them are trivial. But when it comes down to it, there’s definitely room for improvement here. We want to change this, and to talk with our customers about ways of doing it. We want to understand what they think we can do better, and what they think is holding them back. As concerns reshipments, it’s obvious that the quantities we see today in our industry are harmful both for our ecological footprint and for our economic efficiency as a company. So if we can make a lasting change here, we’ll be killing two birds with one stone. This is a subject we have to address.

What role can workshops play with respect to sustainability?

We see great opportunities in the digitalization of the entire value chain – from mobility users, to workshops and the trade, to automakers. A digital infrastructure would not only help us make more reliable estimates of actual requirements, but also put us in the aftermarket in a position in which we have a precise idea of what to manufacture and supply. In turn, this would create savings in both delivery costs and reshipments, and lead to sustainable operations. It would also have a positive effect on scrapping. Many products currently lie around unordered in aftermarket warehouses, until they finally become obsolete. This is avoidable.

What we want to see in the future is a constant cycle where reman and repair solutions are used where ever possible and if no longer possible to have a sensible waste management.

One final question. What is your vision of a sustainable aftermarket? What do we urgently need to start doing now, and what should we be fighting for in the long term?

I think there’s one thing we can all agree on: across all walks of life, customers’ interest in sustainable products is increasing. This interest is also playing an even greater role in individual purchasing decisions. That also goes for our industry. This is a good position to start from, and we should make the most of it. Sustainability can be a true driver of sales. Take the example of vehicle repair at a cost that is appropriate to the vehicle’s current value – whether with reconditioned or repaired parts. It is precisely products such as these that combine the ideal of sustainability with good economic efficiency for companies such as ours.

It’s this mindset that we want to extend to other aftermarket areas. I’m thinking here of the electrification of the powertrain, for example, or the computerization of vehicles, where the “reman, repair, and reuse” idea can also play a decisive role in components and systems. In my opinion, there’s absolutely no doubt that services or products such as these will be the future business models for the trade and for workshops. And for me it´s clear. We will achieve our vision of a sustainable aftermarket, if we all work together, with an open mindset and supporting cross-industry initiatives. 

Here at Delphi Technologies, a brand of BorgWarner, we embarked on our sustainability journey a number of years ago. Thanks to that early start we are well underway to expanding our efforts into all areas of the business today. Our framework of environmental, social, and governance performance (ESG) means our efforts are demonstrably long term and impactful, incorporating our resources, our people, our beliefs and our products. Alex Ashmore, tells us more about what this means in action.

Alex, thanks for speaking about sustainability. It can be quite an umbrella term, what does sustainability mean for you?

Alex Ashmore: I feel sustainability has two key elements. On one hand, it’s about recognizing where you can make meaningful changes to what and how much is used and consumed, and on the other hand what we can do to extend the service life of resources already around us.

It’s important to not forget that second part; it can be so easy to get excited about engineering new things which are sustainable, but we shouldn’t overlook our responsibility to manage what already exists.

That’s a great description. Why is it important for Delphi Technologies to be sustainable like that?

Alex Ashmore: We need to be sustainable by creating a clean, energy-efficient future for our people, customers, communities, and planet. By creating a sustainable value chain with our business we support customers and suppliers who in turn need to meet sustainability governance of their own and look to partner with companies

who are sustainable. When you’re a company as large as we are you have a responsibility to lead by example, and now we are part of the BorgWarner family our sustainability strategy has been strengthened. The two companies were incredibly well matched in the drive to serve the automotive industry and I’m pleased to say we are well aligned in our focus on sustainability.

So Delphi Technologies started making sustainability changes a number of years ago, how did it start?

Alex Ashmore: We began recycling back 13 years ago and we are still going strong. We provide parts and services for vehicles which have a lifespan of up to 25 years. One of the things we’re currently working on is our logistic footprint by maximizing shipping container space and helping lower workshop deliveries per day which can be quite high in the automotive industry. Looking ahead, we’re a leader in electrified powertrains and remanufacturing our products for electric vehicles will be an important part of our business in future. So for us sustainability really is about serving the past, present, and future of the aftermarket. 

LIQUI MOLY Throttle Valve Cleaner

Making life easier for workshops and trade Good products are just the launching pad for success in business. In order to make life easier for workshops and trade, the motor oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY supports them in many areas. This frees them from tiresome additional work and helps the sales of LIQUI MOLY products.

Along with sales employees, application engineers also support the customers of LIQUI MOLY. They are experienced workshop professionals who explain to the mechanics on site how they can optimally use LIQUI MOLY products and get the most out of them. They organise training courses both at LIQUI MOLY and locally. And they answer hundreds of technical queries every day by phone and e-mail. Customers deserve not only top products, but also top services is the motto at LIQUI MOLY. That’s why the company finds it very important that customers do not get through to an anonymous call centre, but are instead connected to their own engineer who answers every enquiry individually. Fast, unbureaucratic help is emphasised here.

This allows a reserve of various motor oils to be elegantly kept while protecting the environment. In Germany, LIQUI MOLY can optionally also deal with the disposal of used oil, take on the statutory hazardous substance management and the implementation of a skin-protection concept for employees in the workshop. This allows the workshop to concentrate on its actual business and means it no longer has to deal with tiresome administrative work. Such services may not be a part of the core business at the oil and additive manufacturer, but LIQUI MOLY customers should be supported on all sides.

You mention electrification, what is Delphi Technologies doing for vehicle electrification?

We are providing our aftermarket customers with world leading parts portfolios, including electrification. We just announced a global power electronics program for electrified vehicles providing aftermarket customers access to original equipment (OE) quality replacement parts. It’s a full service solution that provides charging equipment, in-depth expert-led training, advanced technical support, and traditional replacement parts to further help aftermarket customers service and repair the rapidly evolving electrified fleet.

Delphi Technologies provides so many more components than just electrification, how are those contributing to your sustainability?

Alex Ashmore: For combustion and hybrid vehicles, we have developed a 500+ bar gasoline direction injection (GDi) system; our highest pressure GDi system yet, enabling significant reductions in particulate emissions from petrol engines. Our range of remanufactured parts is a cornerstone of our sustainability plans. They help divert parts from landfill and provide the aftermarket with high quality, approved and reliable remanufactured parts that perform to the same specification they did when they were originally manufactured. BorgWarner also offer extensive remanufacturing programs, with their turbocharger program alone saving more than 16,000 tons of cast iron over the last 30 years.

That’s an excellent way to recycle material, how does recycling feature in your plans?

Alex Ashmore: There are 1.4 billion light duty vehicles in service across the globe today, so the more we can recycle the better. Since 2008, Delphi Technologies has collected more than 3000 tons of

core, which we’ve used in remanufactured pumps and injectors for Diesel fuel injection systems. We are making genuinely sustainable changes to our packaging, from removing plastics which aren’t recyclable to using materials that can be recycled and are recycled or made of recycled blends.

How do you know where to put your efforts for best results and what solutions to develop?

Alex Ashmore: Research and analysis is so important for something as vital as sustainability. Our workshop network provides feedback on the latest parts demands. Our diagnostics tools help us understand driver behaviors such as typical distances, speeds, and environments so we can create technologies that improve emissions for modern driving profiles. Data is critical to the ‘better’ component of our mission to help vehicles drive cleaner, better, further.

Lastly, tell me a little more about the mission you mention, what does ‘cleaner, better, further’ mean?

Alex Ashmore: It’s a mission which really helps frame sustainability as realistic actions plans. As you said sustainability can be quite a conceptual term, so breaking it down to focus areas means we can achieve measurable change. ‘Cleaner’ is where we focus on emissions, energy usage, and recycling. ‘Better’ is where we make sure we’re doing the most effective things we can to systematically improve our supply chain, through our supplier sustainability framework. ‘Further’ is how we keep vehicles maintained to deliver the same, or better, as the originally designed emissions and safety standards. The great thing about these three aspects is that they have application in everything we do; combining the best of both worlds to apply our OE expertise to the needs of the aftermarket.

We want to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to a more sustainable future. We want to help shape the aftermarket’s role in sustainability at a global level to efficiently sustain combustion, hybrid, and electric vehicles of today and tomorrow. 

Working with resources sustainably goes without saying for leading global filtration expert MANN+ HUMMEL. For example, one contribution to sustainability is the improved MANN-FILTER air filter C 24 005, with its renewed filter medium made from recycled synthetic fibers. “One square meter of filter medium now contains plastic from up to six 1.5-liter PET bottles. This meant we could triple the proportion of recycled fibers and make an important contribution to the conservation of resources,” Jens Weine, Product Range Manager Air and Cabin Air Filters at MANN-FILTER. More air filters will now follow in the footsteps of the C 24 005. The green color of their recycled fibers makes these air filters look different to the others. They meet the replacement intervals prescribed by the vehicle manufacturer even under dusty conditions, and are characterized by their

Thanks to the multilayer MICROGRADE A-S medium, the separation efficiency of the C 24 005 air filter is up to 99.5 percent , when tested with ISO-certified test dust. With its high dirt holding capacity throughout the entire service interval, the air filter requires only 30 percent of the filter medium area of traditional air filters based on cellulose media. The fibers of the renewed medium are certified according to Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, meaning they are tested for pollutants and declared non-harmful.

Sustainability is a very broad and very important topic nowadays. The same applies to NRF. At NRF we try to apply a sustainable approach throughout the organization. From making our production process more efficient to waste management.

And from custom product packaging to local distribution. NRF is even ISO14001 certified. ISO14001 is the international standard for an effective environmental management system (EMS).

EFFICIENCY IN PRODUCTION PROCESSES NRF produces engine cooling and air conditioning aftermarket parts. In total NRF has a range of 8.800 parts. NRF has own production facilities in the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. In these countries, NRF succeeds to make the production process as efficient as possible. The production machines only run when they are in use. This reduces for example the time when the furnace is used. This furnace is used to braze the fins and tubes of our coolers.

WASTE MANAGEMENT NRF also applies waste management per used material. As a result, there are separate waste streams for aluminium, copper and cardboard.

Almost no plastic is used in the packaging and production process. 

Because of these training, mechanics are better trained in the correct installation of engine cooling and air conditioning parts. This prevents again many returns.

Elring’s gasket program for US Cars Elring – Das Original on its way to a full-range provider for the American „BIG 3“ For many years, the gasket program for US engines was of minor importance to Elring and its customers, even though the worldwide stock of US cars is likely to be around 250 million vehicles on the road.

In the process of further global expansion in the spare parts business, Elring has put a lot of effort into the last two years. The result is a portfolio of around 2,200 items, exclusively for vehicles from US manufacturers.

Extensive information A highlight within the product range is the cylinder head gasket for a V10 engine with a displacement of 8,4 L and 649 Hp for the Dodge Viper.

In addition to individual cylinderhead gaskets, the product range also includes turbocharger sets, valve cover gaskets and all other seals and gasket sets. The product management team also took care of the smaller engines, of course.

For example, the complete range of gaskets for a Ford Ecosport with a displacement of 1.0 L can be found in the product range.

As with the current range, high-resolution images of the gasket sets and the individual gaskets are shown in the Elring online catalog.

Facing the extensive new program, this is not a task that can be done overnight.

In accordance with Elring‘s strategic claim to play a key role in the US domestic gasket program in the future, the product data is also available in Aces/PIES format.

Elring’s beginnings in the US car segment ElringKlinger‘s involvement in the US car segment began with the series supply to Ford in the late 1990s. At that time Ford had decided to build the 4.0L V6 DOHC engine in Cologne, Germany. It was therefore an obvious choice to place the order for engine gaskets with ElringKlinger. But not only gaskets were supplied at that time, but also the oil pan.

In the meantime, several plants in the so-called New World have been established so that customers in the USA can be supplied directly from there. Of these plants, two stand out for their size and expertise. The plant in Toluca, Mexico and the plant in Buford, Georgia, USA. Among other items, both also produce metal-layer cylinder-head gaskets with the height-profiled and coined stoppers patented by ElringKlinger worldwide.

Only this gasket design is capable of permanently limiting the so-called sealing gap oscillations between the cylinder head and engine block. These oscillations occur to a greater extent in largevolume engines, which is reflected in Elring‘s product range.

Future Insight In order to remain at the leading edge in this product segment, the final steps towards becoming a full-range provider will be taken in 2021. The plan is to add another few hundred references so that by the end of 2021 a product range will be available that will enable Elring customers to supply their customers with gaskets for US vehicles in the required high quality.

BORG Automotive benefits from European production Many sectors in Europe, including the automotive industry, are currently being influenced by an explosive growth in freight prices and substantial delays when it comes to the delivery of goods from the Asia. BORG Automotive, representing the brands: Elstock, DRI, TMI and Lucas, is benefitting from having European production facilities.

The global arrival of Covid19 has had many consequences. One of them was freight forwarders having to stop a large part of their shipments from Asia to Europe in the first half of 2020, due to shutdowns.

This caused thousands of empty containers to be left in Europe and the United States.

When the Western European demand for goods from Asia suddenly increased in the second half of 2020, it also increased the competition among freight forwarders to get hold of the containers and thereby raised the prices and lead time substantially.

Consequences for the automotive industry The automotive industry is one of the sectors being hit by both price increases and delays, although the effect differs from company to company based on product types, among others. Insecurities and fluctuations, like those mentioned, create longer lead times and put stock capacity and the ability to deliver in general under pressure.

In some cases, the issues have a smaller effect, whereas in others they mean lost potential sales.

market. They recognize the increasing issues in the European supply chain.

It is currently expected that the freight issues in terms of goods from Asia will last far into the second half of 2021.

BEARINGS NEW GENERATION OF ECO-FRIENDLY AND RECYCLABLE SUSPENSION

While other manufacturers use plastic to furnish lightweight, flexible parts, the world leading automotive manufacturer NTN-SNR flips the script and develops a suspension strut bearing with spring support made of aluminum: more rigid and easy to recycle.

ORIGINS OF AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT While the axle weight of motor vehicles is increasing (especially for electric vehicles and the weight of the batteries), recyclability constraints are constantly being reinforced, notably with regard to plastics and elastomers. With these two challenges in mind, NTN-SNR decided to use aluminum for the part that serves as the interface between the bearing and the suspension spring of its new suspension strut bearing. This is because even if plastic offers attractive design freedom and several advantages for parts subject to low loads, it soon reaches its mechanical limits for the heavyduty application of the suspension strut bearing.

That’s why NTN-SNR is distancing itself from the reflexive use of plastic that requires reinforcement, and is turning instead to aluminum, which provides much better every day and long-term performance while increasing the recyclability value of the part.

Bearing experts, NTN-SNR has a 38% share of the OE market in Europe, all brands combined.

Also present on the aftermarket, the automotive supplier set itself the objective of creating a more axially compact bearing with a spring support that is more tolerant of spring manufacturing variance.

BENEFITS OF AN ALUMINUM SUSPENSION STRUT BEARING Conceptual work on this bearing project yielded an original design that saves money while fulfilling all its promises.

More robust and rigid than parts made of plastic, aluminum enables this new bearing to be less sensitive to variations in spring production. Unlike its plastic counterparts, there is no risk of deformation and eventual contact with the cover, causing noise and loss of function.

Thanks to a weight savings of 80 g, which represents 13% of the total weight of a reference strut bearing with plastic support, NTN-SNR’s aluminum bearing helps indirectly address the increasingly strict CO2 emissions regulations imposed on automakers.

And finally, the use of aluminum makes it easier to recycle this bearing, thereby offering a substantive response to current trends and European standards that stipulate a high rate of component recyclability.

Whereas the incineration of traditional suspension strut bearings made of nylon 66 (reinforced with glass fibers and metal inserts) is particularly polluting and allows for very little material recovery, aluminum recycles very well. Benefiting likewise from a short distribution chain, the aluminum recycling circuit (recycling, injection, reco very, recycling and reinjection) can remain entirely within national boundaries. 

SIDE A MARKET-READY INNOVATION This aluminum strut bearing was developed for heavy vehicles (categories C and D, utility vehicles), hybrids and electric vehicles, whose battery is heavier than a gasoline or diesel engine. The higher force on the bearing increases the risk of deformation of the support, so it requires a more compact strut bearing. Intended for original equipment, this innovation also applies to the aftermarket, where it could appear very soon, thanks to an R&D team dedicated exclusively to the aftermarket.

SALERI EXTENDS AFTERMARKET RANGE OF ELECTRIC AUXILIARY WATER PUMPS Saleri, the Italian designer and manufacturer of water pumps, is extending its range of electric auxiliary water pumps.

Saleri’s deep commitment to R&D over the years has resulted in many innovative solutions, such as electric pumps for the main engine circuit and for auxiliary applications. This extensive OE expertise enables the SIL Aftermarket Division to offer for an enhanced range of 43 new electric auxiliary water pumps.

Among these, the 50W electric auxiliary water pump that was designed by the company for original equipment. This water pump is based on the integration of a hydraulic system, electric motor and on-board electronic module. Impeller speed and therefore performance of the pump can be controlled via the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication protocol. Cooling responds to demand, especially during cold starts or start & stop phases, allowing optimised thermal management and emissions reduction. With the Night Breaker LED, OSRAM is the first manufacturer to offer a street-legal LED-based automotive retrofit lamp for the German market.

This development is an absolute novelty, as the Night Breaker H7-LED is the first LED retrofit lamp to pass the rigorous test procedures of TÜV Süd.

“Road approval is an important step towards which we have been working for years. With our LED lamps, drivers can legally, easily and inexpensively convert their halogen lighting to the latest technology”, says Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of OSRAM Automotive. Through extensive photometric measurements, OSRAM was able to demonstrate that the majority of vehicles fitted with the Night Breaker H7-LED comply with ECE R112 glare values or could be made 100% glare-free with minimal adjustments. This was verified by the German Federal Office for Motor Vehicles, prompting the German Federal Motor Transport Authority to grant road approval status – making it a legal replacement for H7 halogen lamps in tested vehicle models. Workshops benefit from the Night Breaker LED as well. They can offer their customers the INSIDE EDITION 23 • APRIL 2021

first legal LED retrofit lamp and all the advantages of LED technology. And this at a significantly lower price than a full LED headlight would cost.

How does Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket contribute to it?

The technical challenges here are diverse and complex: For example, hybrid cars with P0 drive systems have an electric motor in the belt drive in addition to the classic combustion engine. The 48-volt mild hybrid technology plays a central role in transforming the FEAD system from a power consumer into a power supplier. With the INA FEAD KIT, we are the first supplier in the aftermarket offering a repair solution for hybrid vehicles with 48 volts. We are very well equipped for the repair of current and future hybrid vehicle generations and are constantly expanding our portfolio. This also includes other hybrid variants such as full hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

Our main carbon footprint comes from efficient logistics. For example, our new Aftermarket

Kitting Operation (AKO) in Halle an der Saale, Germany, is one important piece in the decarbonization of our supply chain. It is state-of-the-art in building ecology, efficiency, technologies and processes and makes a significant contribution to optimize our supply chain and improve the delivery performance of Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket in Europe. The goal is to supply our customers as quickly and reliably as possible at all times. The early performance operation started in August 2020. The AKO will not only supply European regional warehouses with spare parts and repair solutions, but also customers in Central Europe. The aim is to process up to 5,000 internal transport orders per hour in the future. The associated reduction in transports between the sites and the higher utilization of transport capacities will lead to a CO2 reduction of more than 2,500 tons per year. First to market with TecAlliance Instant Data Processing (IDP) enables flexible updates of TecDoc data in real-time

T

he automotive aftermarket is a highly competitive and fast-moving market. To be successful under these conditions, parts manufacturers must be first to market and make sure that the most up-to-date and accurate product data is available. TecAlliance, one of the leading data specialists connecting the digital aftermarket, is revolutionising the handling of product data with Instant Data Processing (IDP). This new interface makes it possible to update TecDoc data in real time, thus increasing flexibility and shortening the time to market for data suppliers and receivers. Pilot projects have started successfully so that in coming weeks the interface will be available to all TecDoc customers worldwide.

Up to now, TecAlliance data suppliers have been bound by a strict schedule to update the TecDoc Catalogue Database. Processing data was only possible with the TecAlliance Data Management Tools (DMM or CCU), forcing data suppliers using other product management systems to export data from that system to the TecAlliance tool for every update.

With IDP, TecAlliance has developed an API interface that makes the transfer process to the TecDoc database faster and more flexible. Parts manufacturers can update their catalogue data within seconds and at any time. For minor changes, they only need to send the net changes.

TecAlliance’s IDP interface enables all players in the international automotive aftermarket to always work with the latest and most accurate data. Instant Data Processing helps users to save time in data management, to shorten the time to market and to focus on their core business of selling parts.

The IDP feature is included in the data management tools DMM and CCU. It is also available as a stand-alone API interface for users with third-party PIM systems, eliminating time-consuming and error-prone export and import processes.

When TecAlliance presented the new interface at a Business Development Group meeting in October 2020, IDP met with great enthusiasm from the participating parts manufacturers.

IDP also offers new ways for TecDoc data receivers to benefit from the acceleration. When IDP is integrated in their processes, all data updates can be received at the same rate as on the TecDoc platform. The data receivers always have control over the data so that they can decide when they want to publish updates in their own production environments.

Pilot projects have started successfully so that in coming weeks the interface will be available to all TecDoc customers worldwide.

In 2019, 57% of Valeo’s sales were already generated by technologies that help to reduce CO2 emissions. Today, one in three vehicles worldwide is fitted with Valeo technology that helps to reduce CO2 emissions. VALEO PROVIDES GREENER MOBILITY SOLUTIONS Being green is already a reality today: Valeo has emerged as the world number one in 48V electric motors, a cost-effective electrification technology that will account for 30% of the global automotive market by 2030. This 48V technology makes electric mobility more affordable: Greener Mobility will be accessible to all.

On the Aftermarket, Valeo’s offer includes as well the Valeo StARS and Valeo i-StARS starter-alternators and Valeo ReStart, a reinforced starter. Remanufacturing makes it possible to save a great deal of energy and materials – compared with the supply of new parts. ZF anticipated this environmental goal very early in 1962 and has consequently expanded its remanufacturing program over the past years.

A broad range of vehicle components including brakes, transmissions, steering systems or torque converters are being remanufactured to original equipment quality at 15 worldwide locations by ZF – with the trend rising.

ZF IS GIVING A SECOND LIFE TO OLD COMPONENTS Remanufacturing begins in the workshop, by removing the old part from the vehicle. Arriving in one of the remanufacturing locations, ZF Aftermarket experts assess and evaluate the newcomer, dismantle, and clean it. Then they sort out any damaged individual components, dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner or recycle them. During assembly, ZF Aftermarket technicians replace defective and missing components with spare parts of original equipment quality, replace wearing parts, and update the software, if necessary.

There are only deviations from the original series product quality if the current technology is more advanced than at the time of original equipment.

In this case, a technical upgrade is included. Finally, the component is returned to the aftermarket with a new warranty, where it awaits its next use as a spare part.

“We call this process remanufacturing to emphasize that this is an industrial standard and not a repair job,” explains Erik Naumann, Head of Global Operations for the ZF Aftermarket Division.

He stresses that: “Natural resources are finite, but our remanufacturing program allows us to reduce the demand for raw materials by up to 90 percent compared to manufacturing a new product.

Additionally, we save about 90 percent in energy.

These sustainable savings of energy and material bring mobility in harmony with environment and lowers also one’s personal CO2 footprint.” 

Lighting and electronics expert HELLA has systematically positioned itself in the emerging field of vehicle body lighting from early on. HELLA opened a state-of-the-art competence centre for car body lighting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, back in 2016 and has since been driving development in the field of car body lighting forward at full speed and with a great deal of innovative strength.

Among other things, HELLA focuses on creating highly integrated lighting solutions, such as in a German premium manufacturer’s sports utility vehicle (SUV), for which HELLA co-developed the illuminated radiator grille.

The result is an unmistakable design that spectacularly highlights the front of the vehicle in striking lighting. In every respect, the premium vehicle is a pleasant contrast to the "design monotony" often encountered and creates "highlights" in the truest sense of the word. Especially in view of increasing electrification, attractive vehicle lighting is becoming more and more important, because electric vehicles no longer require classic engine cooling and open up new possibilities for vehicle design by integrating the front of the vehicle. By designing individual light signatures, the vehicles can be given a much higher degree of visual individualisation.

In the field of electric vehicles, HELLA recently planned and developed radiator grille lighting with an

individual "design character line" for both a premium and a volume manufacturer. The vehicles will both be launched in early 2021. For one of the design solutions – dynamic grill lighting – 130 LEDs are used, which are fed into a thick-walled edge light guide and create a unique crystal effect.

Another design in development is a panel of over a metre wide, which will be used in the front area of a European electric vehicle brand and which, in addition to its convincing appearance, also has a technical treat to offer: the panel has a particularly great surface quality and is also radar-permeable for automatic distance control. As a system integrator, HELLA has all the core competencies required to bring such innovations to the road. 

As the automotive industry continues to evolve and advance, brake friction products are constantly being pushed to the limits. In line with this, the expectations on manufacturers to adhere to new guidelines and reduce their environmental impact is also increasing.

TMD Friction, a global leader in manufacturing brake friction, discusses how the braking industry is adapting and how as a company its products and processes are continually changing to reduce its carbon footprint. The company also describes how, rather than merely waiting for government regulations to improve this area, it is actively drawing up new guidelines on its own.

REDUCING COPPER IN BRAKING TMD Friction is leading the industry by developing cleaner and more sustainable solutions, which include less copper in brake pads. At any one time the company´s laboratories are evaluating more than 200 different “ingredients” to see if they possess properties that will lead to new and advanced friction formulations. So it is no surprise that TMD Friction started developing copper-free friction materials very early and in 2021 was the first brake friction manufacturer to obtain approval for a copper-free friction material in the original equipment of a German high-performance vehicle – the BMW models M3 and M4. Today, more than 95% of the passenger car pads sales volume is copper-free.

THE ECO-LEVEL APPROACH OF TMD FRICTION Since the mid-1990s, TMD Friction has been using an eco-level approach. The company had significant involvement in the development of this approach, which is now recognised as an industry standard.

This eco-classification for friction products is the basis for gradually eliminating harmful substances from the manufacturing processes.

In addition to more environmentally friendly friction formulations, TMD Friction is also focusing on weight-optimised brake pads with its Lightweight Technology Program. Textar Commercial Vehicle disc brake pads in this range use a lightweight backing plate, thus reducing costs by decreasing the weight, enhancing fuel efficiency and therefore reducing CO2 emissions.

BRAKE DUST REDUCTION TMD Friction´s innovation has also extended to helping reduce emissions for brake systems. However, how can the abrasion of brake discs and pads be reduced without compromising performance?

This can only be achieved by developing of a special friction material. TMD Friction has this kind of material concept in its portfolio with the Textar e-pad range. These brake pads offer long life, low noise, minimised brake dust and great performance.

DON´T WASTE – RECYCLE! For TMD Friction, environmental sustainability involves optimising production processes so that less scrap is produced and production waste is recycled. In 2019, TMD Friction recycled more than 8,000 tonnes of material. 

SIDE Furthermore, TMD Friction is also committed to reusing energy and heat generated during the production process. In France, for example, this is used to heat a public swimming pool. Great importance is also attached to eliminating health risks in everyday production processes. This means, for example, that filter systems reduce dust levels in production.

LESS PLASTIC FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT At TMD Friction packaging is being designed to be more environmentally-friendly, with plastic being avoided wherever possible. In this sense, the plastic transport protection in Textar-coated brake disc boxes was replaced by with a corrugated cardboard design. This means that almost 40 tonnes of plastic can be saved each year.

Regulations become stricter and stricter, especially in the EU, driving the automotive sector to manufacturing of vehicles with very low -or zero- emissions. It is also important to mention that this trend is not only driven by strict rules from governments, but also by the highly growing awareness among consumers. Aftermarket companies must adapt quickly and act promptly in this rapidly changing environment.

Plans for acquisition of electrical vehicles and gradual replacement of the old fleet are already in process. Especially in the case of metropolitan cities, such as Athens and Thessaloniki, this may eventually become mandatory, following Paris’ and other big cities’ example.

One important area of sustainable economizing is remanufacturing. It is proved that remanufactured products require much less raw materials and much less energy to produce than newly manufactured products. In association with strategic suppliers (e.g. BOSCH), the core of parts that is worth to be remanufactured, such as steering pumps, starters, alternators, etc., is sent back to the factory in order to be remanufactured and to be sold again as brand new, fully functional spare parts. Replacing entire units is easy, fast and costefficient, leading to high customer satisfaction.

Viacar SA intends to be more involved and run customer rewards programs that follow this strategy. For the aforementioned reasons, collaboration with more suppliers is required.

The South African aftermarket sector has exhibited strong growth since the early 2000s and is forecast to grow at 5.5% annually until 2023. While tyres remain the largest generator of revenue in the industry with 11 million tyres sold per year, service parts are next in line, followed quite closely by accessories. It is in these spaces that the industry plays a part, leaving a footprint and creating a legacy.

Sustainability can be viewed as the intersection of the triple bottom line of People, Planet and Profits, each of which are equally important and interdependent. This nested-dependency is critical, and it is important that the industry applies it to every aspect of doing business. We see this in a number of ways:

What is NEXUS position towards a more sustainable aftermarket?

The aim of NEXUS is to take leadership, inspire and educate the Automotive Aftermarket for a more sustainable future.

Sustainability – “acting green” – is becoming a Key Strategic Priority, accelerated by increasing expectations from stakeholders such as consumers, governments, business partners and investors. The industry can no longer ignore the fact, and we need to step up to the challenges we face.

The NEXUS policy for ‘Corporate Social Sustainability (CSR)’ is based on the 3 P’s concept – Planet, People, Profit – also called “triple bottom line”.

A company needs to be profitable to stay in the business long-term, but the relations to our stakeholders (whether it’s employees or outside community) and the impact on the environment shall be considered in all decision making and actions taken.

What are the actions taken in place at a corporate level?

With the NEXUS CSR policy as blueprint, we have defined the path we need to take, and how we can measure the progress.

We have set Key Performance Indicators (“KPIs”) with ambitious targets for actions items – under all three P’s (Planet, People, Profit) - where the N! Team shall try improve.

For ‘Planet’ it is worth highlighting that in 2021 we aim reduce travel/CO2 emissions with -20% versus 2019 (pre-Covid), and -30% in 2022. The N! Team are urged to use ecological transport modes, and home-office (1-2 days per week) will reduce long commutes by car. The CO2 impact will also be assessed for events, with the target to reduce our carbon footprint. We will move to a more “green digital office” with focus on measured initiatives such as recycling, using digital signatures instead of shipping documents, being lean with electricity consuming large attachments to e-mails etc. Each Nexus office has a poster on the wall reminding employees – and hopefully inspiring visitors! – of the main sustainability objectives.

We have great existing platforms where we can deploy sustainability initiatives; N! United for charity, and N! Academy where we can teach sustainability topics. There will be a dedicated section on N! Connect where we can share material on sustainability, bringing knowledge to the community.

The Strategic Committee of NEXUS have dedicated working groups analysing potential strategic sustainability initiatives for the future. NEXUS

Management are also reaching out to other industry organizations to make common progress for the industry. The last two meetings of the NEXUS Prospective Council have focused solely on sustainability.

What is the strategic plan? And how NEXUS will involve its community?

We have a great potential to make a significant impact due to the large size of the N! community, with members present in all corners of the world.

Our strategy is start from the inside - the N! Team is expected to set a best-in-class benchmark, and inspire others to follow - and roll-out initiatives to the whole community. We will use our tools, platforms and human relationships to work on solutions that can bring value to the whole community.

As an overall ambition, we would like to standardize and support one overall sustainable approach in the industry. We shall work with other partners on e.g. the definition of a “green spare part”.

Everything start from education; we all need to understand why we need to change our behaviour, and we need to acquire the knowledge to be ready for the changing future. We shall share knowledge and examples of best-in-class sustainability examples within the community.

Nexus want to stimulate business initiatives in a new green ecosystem. Sustainability initiatives can turn challenges into profitable business opportunities, and we want our whole community to benefit.

Working together will make a difference. Remember; whether improvements are small or large, they all contribute to progress.

FEBRUARY 2021 Bapcor Limited, Australia and the Asia Pacific’s largest automotive aftermarket specialist company, has spent three years developing and actioning the company’s four pillar Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy.

This detailed Bapcor ESG strategy and its related action plans outline the Australian company’s solid commitment to corporate responsibility and highly effective governance throughout all of its automotive aftermarket industry operations across Australia, New Zealand and in Thailand.

The importance placed by Bapcor in the implementation of a world class ESG strategy saw the Australian company join the United Nations Global Compact in early 2020, ensuring that all facets of its ESG strategy are aligned directly to the highest global standards of corporate, social and environmental responsibility.

Of primary importance in Bapcor’s ESG strategy is ensuring that the company’s many thousands of automotive aftermarket products are sourced

from highly ethical suppliers. As Bapcor trades with product manufacturers, marketers and distributors both locally and all over the world, in order to become a Bapcor supplier, companies must operate safe, high quality manufacturing operations. All Bapcor suppliers must also clearly display that they do not engage in modern slavery, as is also required by Australian Federal Government legislation. Bapcor achieves this by interacting with suppliers responsibly, ensuring that detailed requirements are adhered to by current and prospective product suppliers.

The second pillar of Bapcor’s ESG strategy is the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The Australian company has implemented a number of decisive and effective actions to ensure that the carbon emissions created by its operations are more than offset through a number of initiatives. The carbon emissions generated by more than 1,000 Burson Auto Parts delivery vehicles used across the entire nationwide store network are offset by the company’s integral involvement with Greenfleet. In less than two years, more than 40,000 trees have been planted across the country, with all Burson Auto Parts delivery vehicles displaying signage advising that each vehicle’s carbon emissions are offset by the Greenfleet tree planting program. Bapcor staff are also directly involved in this strategy by taking part in tree planting days, further enforcing the importance that Bapcor places in its commitment to environmental sustainability at both local and national levels.

In addition to the Greenfleet carbon offset program, all Burson Auto Parts store lighting is in the process of being modernised to LED lighting to conserve energy. Victorian and New South Wales Burson Auto Parts stores have been, or are in the process of being updated with new LED lighting, with the rest of the store network to follow. At almost 200 stores nationwide, both the immediate and long term energy savings generated by this highly responsible Bapcor environmental sustainability initiative are more than significant.

Additionally, Bapcor is committed to reducing waste and increasing recycling activity. To achieve this important ESG strategy goal, the company has formed an alliance with Wasteflex, an organisation that assists Bapcor by reducing the amount of waste that would normally be sent to landfill by optimising waste recycling.

Strong, highly effective and responsible corporate governance represents the third pillar of Bapcor’s detailed ESG strategy. With a respected team of more than 4,500 people employed across Australia, New Zealand and in Thailand, Bapcor, together with its team members’ input, has established key company values for this region’s largest automotive aftermarket industry specialised company.

The company has also optimised its health, wellbeing and workplace safety training along with providing team member access to mental health support services. These initiatives were strongly enhanced during the COVID-19 lockdown periods across Australia and New Zealand.
