THE CITY OF NEW YORK MAYOR’S OFFICE OF MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT NEW YORK, NY 10019 Dear Friends,

July 11 - August 7, 2016

Welcome to the 2016 New York Musical Festival! For thirteen years, the New York Musical Festival has offered New Yorkers a wonderful opportunity to experience new and captivating works in the increasingly diverse world of musical theater. Home to innovative storytellers adding new perspectives to the theater landscape, NYMF helps to collectively advance artistic voices within the City through public performance. The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment proudly supports NYMF and the work of staff members and partners who are expanding the bounds of musical theater while providing training and job opportunities within the Off- and Off-Off-Broadway communities. Each year we work with the hundreds of film, television, digital, and commercial projects that film on location in the five boroughs. Under the Media and Entertainment umbrella, the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting is celebrating its 50th Anniversary year with a full range of exciting events surrounding these domains and including the recent additions of music, digital content, and publishing to our portfolio. This summer, in addition to supporting NYMF, we are presenting Broadway and Off-Broadway free public performances in City parks and areas throughout the five boroughs where live performances do not regularly take place. Actively pursuing more ways to support the theater communities at all levels within the bedrock of the industry, we support educational and workforce development program partners, and have expanded existing programs to include new opportunities open to theaters. We continue efforts to provide relevant programming within the “Made in NY” Talk series that encourages industry professionals from a variety of fields to share firsthand knowledge about their careers with students and interested New Yorkers. Learn more by visiting our website – www.nyc.gov/mome – and follow us on Twitter – @madeinny – and discover everything New York City has to offer the creative community. Enjoy the Festival! Sincerely,

Julie Menin, Commissioner Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment

From West Side Story to Rent, from Annie to If/Then, from On the Town to Hamilton, one thing is certain: musicals and New York City go hand in hand. Though song and dance have long played an important role in storytelling, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century in New York that libretto, music, and lyrics came together for the first time to form what we know today as the “book musical.” It is clear that even the earliest musicals were shaped and nourished by this city, influenced by the rumble of the subway train and the rattle of the taxis. Even when it is not explicitly stated, New York City is a character in so many of the musicals we love, just as musical theater is part of the identity of New York. In 2004, The New York Musical Theatre Festival was launched to provide a platform for artists to continue to mount exciting new works in the heart of New York’s theater district. The name has changed slightly, but the essence remains the same. NYMF combines a grassroots festival model with a technical framework geared specifically to musicals. The Festival provides or subsidizes all the key components needed to realize a show, from theaters and technical equipment to marketing support and industry and audience outreach, giving independent artists and early-career producers resources and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise access or afford. In 2013, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award that recognized a decade of creating and nurturing new musical theater. Since the first Festival, more than 400 shows have been presented, featuring thousands of artists. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have gone on to further successes on and Off-Broadway, across the country, and around the globe – reaching millions of theatergoers worldwide.

2016 NYMF ABOUT NYMF DRAMATURGS WORK HERE NYMF AND THE ROLE OF DRAMATURGY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MUSICALS

BY THOMAS CARUSO

As a director in New York City, I’m passionate about developing new musicals. I’ve had some of my best collaborative experiences at the New York Musical Festival. The first: a musical called WOOD by Dan Collins and Julianne Wick Davis in 2008. More recently, at 2014 NYMF, I directed the musical comedy ACADEMIA NUTS, by Julian Blackmore, Becca Anderson, and Dan Marshall. I’m proud to say the production won the NYMF Award for Best Musical sponsored by Play-by-Play, as well as a few others. These projects were undoubtedly two of the most rewarding, collaborative experiences because of the role that dramaturgy played in both. What dramaturgs do and how they fit into the puzzle of new musical theater collaboration is enigmatic, and therefore, probably the most misunderstood art form in theater today. So…what does a dramaturg do? In my experience, a dramaturg helps the creative team decipher the tone and structure of a piece, suggest storytelling devices, point out anachronisms, research time periods, and offer a perspective on issues of social consciousness depending on the musical’s subject matter.

Recently, I had the honor of directing SOUTHERN COMFORT, a new musical by the team I first met back when working on WOOD. This was a show I directed three times, first at CAP21 in 2011, then at Barrington Stage in 2013, and most recently in a critically acclaimed production this past winter at The Public Theater in NYC, where it was nominated for both a Lortel Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best OffBroadway Musical. During its most recent incarnation at The Public, we were fortunate enough to have Dr. Polly Carl as our dramaturg. Polly was instrumental in nuancing certain character arcs and conflicts, but even more importantly, as a transgender man, he helped to enlighten us about what it means to be transgender in America today, a central theme of the show. With ACADEMIA NUTS, we worked extensively with Mary Kate Burke and were additionally assigned a dramaturg by NYMF, Tralen Doler. Developing a new musical is full of challenges. Sometimes writers, composers, lyricists, and directors are so close to the work, it’s hard to see what’s on the page. It is a brilliant choice by NYMF to have the foresight to assign a dramaturg to each developmental reading and Next Link Project production presented in the Festival. While adding a new person to a creative team can feel a bit like speed dating at first, in my experience, NYMF’s dramaturgs bring a fresh energy and perspective that have helped elevate every production on which I’ve had the pleasure of working. 2016 NYMF ABOUT NYMF THE NEXT LINK PROJECT A flagship of the Festival, NYMF’s Next Link Project is an innovative writers’ service program open to any writer – produced or unproduced, with or without agency representation. The program receives hundreds of submissions from all over the world each fall, and every script and demo recording is reviewed by numerous members of NYMF’s Reading Committee. A double-blind screening process, designed to ensure that the quality of the work and not the name of the author guides our readers, culminates in a select group of finalists being reviewed by a Grand Jury of leading musical theater artists and producers. Finally, up to ten shows are awarded production spots in the Festival. Once selected, the writing teams embark on an intense development process in preparation for their Festival productions with help from NYMF every step of the way. NYMF offers guidance in many forms, including varied seminars – on fundraising, marketing, producing, and more – led by industry professionals, networking events, dramaturgical support, a $5000 production subsidy, casting assistance, and the immense marketing and industry exposure that comes with appearing at NYMF.

2016 NYMF ABOUT NYMF STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The NYMF Student Leadership Program (SLP) provides training and mentoring to students interested in careers in musical theater. NYMF accepts applications each spring from both undergraduate and graduate students, ultimately selecting a group of student leaders. They are assigned roles of producer, director, stage manager, casting director, or marketing director – depending on their areas of interest – under the mentorship and supervision of Festival staff.

NYMF provides both a production budget and the Festival’s technical resources to underwrite an original concert devised and assembled by the SLP team. In addition to the students serving on the creative team, the concert is entirely written and performed by their fellow students. NYMF strives to include students from as many schools as possible in the SLP and gives students the chance to forge meaningful relationships with their peers at other institutions. This year’s SLP participants hail from Emerson College, Marymount Manhattan College, Pace University, Point Park University, and the University of Notre Dame.

These new pieces are inspiring, and represent our current culture in a way that’s never been done before. In a world bombarded by technology, detachment, and a loss of empathy, musical theater strives to be a platform of true community, communion, and communication, where everyone’s stories are being told and everyone’s voices are being heard. And, when lyric, melody, and story come together in perfect synthesis, the impact is like no other. I’m so excited to see what this year of new musicals brings!” —Jessie Mueller “In a Festival season that celebrates and empowers women’s voices, we are thrilled to have Jessie, an originator of strong and complex female roles in new Broadway musicals, joining us as Honorary Chair.” —Rachel Sussman, Director of Programming & Artist Services at the New York Musical Festival JESSIE MUELLER: 2016 Tony nominee for her portrayal of Jenna in Sara Bareilles’ new musical, Waitress. Mueller won the 2014 Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and a 2015 Grammy Award for her performance as Carole King in Beautiful, The Carole King Musical. She made her Broadway debut opposite Harry Connick Jr. in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, for which she received Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations. She was also seen on Broadway in The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Drama Desk nomination) and Nice Work If You Can Get It. In her native Chicago, Mueller has won acclaim for starring roles in She Loves Me (Joseph Jefferson Award), Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, Curtains and Carousel (Joseph Jefferson Award), among other musicals.

A SCYTHE OF TIME

Book and Lyrics by Alan Harris; Music and Lyrics by Mark Alan Swanson Inspired by two stories from Edgar Allan Poe, A SCYTHE OF TIME takes us to London, 1881, where the public can’t get enough of the infamously sensational Blackwood Articles, in which writers take their own lives and, in the process of dying, record their experience with death. On the other side of town, our heroine Signore Zenobia embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery of the articles in an effort to save her own magazine, and finds time pressing down on her as she composes a Blackwood Article of her very own. A bizarre tale of power and love, poetic justice and bloody revenge, A SCYTHE OF TIME shows us just how far one goes for fame and recognition in an absurd world. June Havoc Theatre 7/21 8pm, 7/23 1pm, 7/23 5pm, 7/24 5pm, 7/26 9pm

But Aya’s father, an Egyptian-American world-traveler, remained a mystery, as did her Muslim family. In this solo musical, Aya enacts the world she came from and the family she went in search of. With a range of accents, voices, and zany characters, Aya’s story deals with contemporary conflicts – identity, the culture war, Islamophobia, all while asking Eh Dah – what is this?! FOREST BOY

Book and Lyrics by Scott Gilmour; Music by Claire McKenzie On September 5th, 2011, a boy appeared in Berlin claiming to have lived in the forest with his father for the past five years. What followed were nine months of speculation, police inquiry, and a global media frenzy, as the mystery of the Forest Boy slowly unravelled.
Based on an incredible true story, FOREST BOY is a modern-day fairytale of growing up and, above all, imagination. The Pearl Theatre 7/27 8pm, 7/28 9pm, 7/29 9pm, 7/30 1pm, 8/2 5pm

FOR THE LOVE OF ORIGINALITY: HOW TO INVENT NEW STORIES IN MUSICAL THEATRE

FREEDOM RIDERS

BETA

Book by Richard Allen; Music and Lyrics by Richard Allen & Taran Gray FREEDOM RIDERS tells the story of Civil Rights activists as they risk their lives riding interstate buses in the extremely segregated South. Their end goal: to bring attention to the injustice of segregation in an action that would show the world an image of ‘burning bus America’ whose existence most Americans wanted to ignore. FREEDOM RIDERS proclaims the youthful and impatient voices of the American Civil Rights Movement. June Havoc Theatre 7/27 8pm, 7/28 5pm, 7/30 1pm, 8/2 9pm

PANEL FROM THE DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE: COLLABORATING ON THE CREATION OF A NEW MUSICAL You know what a director’s role is once a show is ready for production, but what about while it’s still being written? This panel, presented in partnership with the SDC Foundation, will examine how valuable a director’s creative contributions can be during the development of a new musical, long before it is ready for the stage. MIDNIGHT AT THE NEVER GET

NYMF @ NITE

MUSICAL SONGWRITING WORKSHOP

EDUCATIONAL

Book, Music, and Lyrics by Mark Sonnenblick; Conceived by Sam Bolen & Mark Sonnenblick Trevor Copeland and Arthur Brightman have the perfect New York romance. That’s swell. In 1965 it’s also against the law. So in the back room of The Never Get, an illegal Greenwich Village gay bar, they put together a show called Midnight – a queer nightclub act where Arthur writes love songs for Trevor to sing to a man. But as they hurtle towards the end of the decade and tensions in the Village reach a breaking point, the lovers find themselves caught in a relationship they can’t control and a movement they don’t understand. Featuring a sultry score fashioned after the American Songbook, MIDNIGHT AT THE NEVER GET imagines two men who never existed at a time that very much did. 42West NY 7/28 9pm, 7/31 7pm, 8/1 8pm

This introductory workshop led by Anna K. Jacobs (POP!; Harmony, Kansas; Teeth; Echo) takes participants through an authentic musical theater songwriting process. Participants have explored the relationship between music and language, learned key songwriting tools, discovered the power of writer and performer collaborations, performed original work, and received guidance and feedback in a safe and open environment. This weeklong experience culminates in an open presentation and songwriting master class with Ryan Scott Oliver (Jasper in Deadland, 35mm: A Musical Exhibition, Darling). Playwrights Horizons Rehearsal Studios 7/20 9:45am-12:45pm, 7/21 9:45am-12:45pm, 7/22 6:30pm-9:30pm, 7/23 9:45am-12:45pm • June Havoc Theatre 7/25 9:45am-5:45pm, 7/26 9:45am-4pm FEE $130 to participate Presentation: June Havoc Theatre 7/26 5pm TICKETS $10

2016 NYMF ARTIST SPOTLIGHT STACEY WEINGARTEN What impact has your participation in NYMF made on your career? As an early-career artist, it’s been a jump-start with no judgment – a platform to reach an audience and peers to get feedback that otherwise you might not. The first show I had at NYMF was called Les Enfants de Paris (2011) – it’s going by the title Fifth Republic now, and has been developed at the Dramatist Guild Fellowship – and NYMF allowed us to learn more about the piece as well as grow as artists in a hands-on, professional, real-world environment. Additionally, with Rescue Rue (2014) NYMF allowed us to reach potential producers in addition to the audience feedback. This is your third production in the Festival since 2011. What keeps you coming back to NYMF? The people and their passion for supporting new works of musical theater in all its glorious forms – everyone from the NYMF crew to participants and patrons. Many of these individuals are talented professionals in their own right, so it’s always a good idea to let their knowledge and energy rub off! Any surprising untold stories or favorite memories from your NYMF experiences? For Rescue Rue we did an Autism-Friendly performance. There’s a moment in the show where Rue, a dog inspired by my own rescue pup of the same name, and Squish, her one-eyed one-toothed streetdog furever friend are bonding by howling at the moon and making a wish. For the first time in our albeit short production history, we had kids sweetly howling along with Squish and Rue. The power of theater is nothing short of miraculous. Why do you believe artists should get involved with NYMF? NYMF allows you to get your hands dirty in a supportive community of crazies like yourself. Because there’s no doubt – making musicals is crazy, but it’s also magical – people bursting into song when they can’t speak, into dance when they can’t sing… there’s nothing like this uniquely American art form, and with NYMF being committed to developing new works, there’s no better place to be. Tell us a little bit about your collaboration with LUDO on Broken Bride. Well, it all started in 2009 when I went to see LUDO’s ‘Broken Bride’ Tour where they played the whole album. Not only was I smitten, I was convinced it had to be on stage and needed puppetry to complete the storytelling. I likely had no business pursuing it since I was less experienced, but my overwhelming passion for Broken Bride kept me at it – I’m grateful that all these years later, LUDO has trusted me to move forward with the project. It’s been a process of figuring out what will work best for the stage as a medium – how to clarify the storytelling, what can be shown instead of told, what songs that already exist can be recontextualized from other LUDO albums. Places like NYMF have allowed me to hone my skills and in turn be more capable of developing Broken Bride. I truly love working on this piece and am stoked to share it with NYMF this summer. Why should audiences come see Broken Bride? Because it has everything a gal (or anyone!) could want – time travel, true love, dinosaurs, the zombie apocalypse – but don’t get me wrong, while it’s playful and energetic there’s also a lot of pathos and heart running through it. Not to mention it has an infectious rock score by LUDO… who if you haven’t heard of yet, you’ll never forget after you leave. Photo: Stacey Weingarten (Larry Hamilton/Blue Photography)
