2019 ABOUT NYMF
Now in its 16th year, the New York Musical Festival is the premiere musical theatre festival in the world. Over 400 new musicals have premiered at NYMF and thousands of artists and administrators have participated in Festival productions. We are extremely proud of all the alumni writers who’ve been a part of the Festival since its inception. Since a musical is the most collaborative of art forms, we’re equally proud of the artists and administrators who have launched their careers through Festival positions both onstage and off. So “hats off” to all the directors, choreographers, musical directors, arrangers and orchestrators, designers, actors, musicians, managers, publicists, producers, casting directors, stage managers, wardrobe crew, deck crew, follow-spot operators, sound engineers, properties masters, and the dozens of other positions both on and offstage, all of whom worked together to bring to life the musical that you’re about to witness. When we say “Musicals Live Here” we mean that NYMF is the platform for all these wonderful theatre artists to launch or expand their professional careers. It is fair to say that the future of musical theatre lives here as well.

The New York Musical Festival nurtures the creation, production, and public presentation of stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals to ensure the future vitality of musical theatre.
The work we’re currently doing and the expansions we plan to make in the coming years are in keeping with our mission. The nurturing of the creation, production, and public presentation of stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals ensures the future vitality of musical theatre. By providing a platform for hundreds of early-career and mid-career artists, the Festival plays an invaluable role in the national cultural landscape.

NEW YORK MUSICAL FESTIVAL SCOTT PYNE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WEST HYLER, PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Hi Friends, We are thrilled to welcome you to the 16th season of the New York Musical Festival! With 30 musical stories being told in full productions, concerts, and readings, you’re sure to find something that you love in this year’s Festival. All of our presentations are happening along two blocks of 42nd Street, the place where musical theatre dreams have been born for generations. We encourage you to have the full NYMF experience and visit all of our venues to take in all the different kinds of formats in which this year’s musicals are being presented. We’re also presenting industry-focused events like Michael Cassara’s audition workshop and The Road to NYMF Panel. Our Festival chair, Joe Iconis, is the guest artist for the NYMF songwriting workshop as well as giving an exclusive NYMF concert with a Q&A during the Festival’s third week, so there’s a good reason to come back every day of the 28 straight days of NYMF — every day of the week there’s something exciting happening! You’ll also notice there’s been a changing of the guard of the NYMF leadership team. It is our great honor to take over the reins of the Festival. As the new leadership, we want to thank all the artists and administrators past and present who have collaborated with us to bring the Festival to life, from the devoted NYMF staff that carries their love of musical theatre to work every day to our steadfast board, sponsors, and donors who provide the essential support for the celebration of musical theatre called NYMF. And to you — waiting with anticipation for the show to begin — thank you for coming to NYMF and believing in the power of musical theatre! In fellowship,
Scott Pyne

THE CITY OF NEW YORK MAYOR’S OFFICE OF MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT NEW YORK, NY 10019 Dear Friends, It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 New York Musical Festival! The New York Musical Festival (NYMF) celebrates new works of musical theatre and offers New Yorkers a wonderful and unique festival experience. Throughout the year, the festival attracts unproduced works from across the country and then develops them through innovative collaborations in order to present them on the world’s stage during this festival. Through their efforts NYMF is building the next generation of musical theatre talent and expanding audiences for small musical productions. The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment is dedicated to advancing the visibility of musical theatre through a variety of programs and initiatives. Broadway in the Boros is our annual summer program bringing free Broadway and Off-Broadway performances to public spaces to reach diverse audiences throughout the five boroughs. In addition, we launched the NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre which provides finishing funds to theatrical productions led by female-identified creatives. In the first round, we provided funds for 14 theatre productions. The next application deadline is October 2019. Also this year, we are commissioning a study on the economic and cultural impact of the New York City’s Off-Broadway and independent theatres and site-specific work, which we plan to release in the fall. Visit our website (www.nyc.gov/film) and follow us on Twitter (@madeinny) to discover everything New York City has to offer the creative community. ENJOY THE FESTIVAL!

2019 ABOUT NYMF
THE NEXT LINK PROJECT AND THE NYMF ARTIST FELLOWSHIP A flagship of the Festival, NYMF’s Next Link Project is an innovative writers’ service program open to any writer – produced or unproduced, with or without agency representation. The program receives hundreds of submissions from all over the world each fall, and every script and demo recording is reviewed by numerous members of NYMF’s Reading Committee. A double-blind screening process, designed to ensure that the quality of the work and not the name of the author guides our readers, culminates in a select group of finalists being reviewed by a Grand Jury of leading musical theatre artists and producers. Finally, up to ten shows are awarded production spots in the Festival. The 2019 NYMF Grand Jury included OBIE and Drama Desk Award winning actress Donna Lynne Champlin (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), NYMF Artistic Director West Hyler (Paramour), Tony Award-winning producer Jane Dubin (An American in Paris), Goodspeed Musicals’ Artistic Associate Anika Chapin, director Jenny Koons (Burn All Night), choreographer Lorin Latarro (Waitress), Rattlestick Artistic Director Daniella Topol, Public Theater Literary Associate Jack Phillips Moore, director Saheem Ali (Public Theater Mobile Unit’s Twelfth Night), LCT3 Associate Director Natasha Sinha, and the Artistic Director of Musical Theatre Factory Mei Ann Teo.

2019 ABOUT NYMF
JOE ICONIS • 2019 NYMF HONORARY FESTIVAL CHAIR “As a writer who has been attempting to forge a path through the treacherous wilderness of the American musical theatre for the past twelve years, I can say from firsthand experience that NYMF is a vital and necessary part of our community. The platform and the support that NYMF provides musicals at the start of their sure-tobe unpredictable lives is invaluable and necessary. I am so beyond honored to be the honorary chair for this legendary festival that has already introduced the world to so many iconic musicals. I can’t think of another festival that showcases such a wide variety of dramatic artists, subject matters, and performance techniques, all falling under that glorious, sequined umbrella known as Musical Theatre. During the NYMF season, there is a palpable excitement racing through the streets of midtown. Festival patrons run from show to show, screaming one-sentence reviews at each other as they hurry to make the next curtain. “I loved it!” “I hated it!” “I got confetti in my hair!”
Photo: Stephanie Wessels
Of course, the reviews themselves don’t matter, the thing that matters is that the community is talking about musicals. New musicals. Created by passionate artists who descend on our fair city for a few weeks in an effort to stir things up and, hopefully, add another title to the canon of Great Pieces of Musical Theatre. I am so thrilled to be the honorary ring master of this theatrical circus and can’t wait to shout my opinion on specific shows loudly at friends on 42nd Street.” — Joe Iconis JOE ICONIS is a Tony-nominated composer, lyricist, writer, and performer. He has authored the musicals Be More Chill, Broadway Bounty Hunter, Bloodsong of Love, Love in Hate Nation, and many others. The original cast recording of his musical phenomenon Be More Chill has over 300 million streams worldwide, and his song “Broadway, Here I Come!” was hailed by the New York Times as a new entry in the Great American Songbook. Joe’s songs appeared on NBC’s “Smash,” and his writing has been featured in The New York Times and The Dramatist. He has been nominated for a 2019 Tony Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Lucille Lortel Award, and is the recipient of an Ed Kleban Award, Jonathan Larson Award, and Richard Rodgers Award.

ALIVE! THE ZOMBIE MUSICAL Music and Lyrics by Josh Canfield
With the cover of the night, zombies terrorize a small town, but when morning comes they leave no trace of their feasting, just missing people. One feisty news reporter, Shelly Sheets, is on the case when she witnesses her co-worker, Eve, being kidnapped and almost eaten by the creatures. Eve is then miraculously saved by one thoughtful zombie, whose new desire is to find his lost humanity. Shelly, her love-sick camera-man Kevin, Eve, and the zombie, embark on a mystical journey with singing fairies, dancing Oracles, hidden portals, and one magical lake — all the while chased by the gruesome leader of the “eaters”, Big Z, and his comedic, brainless band of zombies. fffffffffffAAAAAAAAAA\\\\\\

FELLOWSHIP ARTIST
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Anessa Marie and Danny Bristoll A celebration of identity, love, and life through the eyes of both a trans woman and gay man in today’s society. Featuring a full jazz ensemble and music influenced by both jazz and musical theatre, both unique voices combined offer a raw and unsung exploration of gender identity and the joys and sorrows of transitions, both physical and emotional, in America today. Finding Beautiful promises to speak to anyone who has juggled finding the beauty and love within themselves and the strength to be yourself unabashedly. Writer Anessa Marie is the 2019 NYMF Fellowship Artist. hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

HEAD AND HEART
CREATED BY NYMF
Music by Various Artists It’s said that the brain isn’t fully developed until age 25, but the battle for the mind is ongoing. Logic demands the clearcut fact, the rational guide. Emotion fights for the untamable colors, a raw feeling, an intuition. So how do we, as young people, navigate the tension of logic versus emotion that is prevalent in everything we do? Brought to you by an all-female team, Head and Heart explores this question, searching for our most authentic selves through a balance between the two. Presented by the 2019 Student Leaders.

SAVAGE THE MUSICAL
Music and Lyrics by Nicolette Blount and John Waynelovich Savage is a dramatic musical inspired by the true story of 1920s Native American sharpshooter and silent film actress, Wanda Savage, as told through jazz- and-blues-influenced pop music. Wanda was a renegade performer who shot her way through circuses, vaudeville and Hollywood before landing in a Wyoming brothel. Savage is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago – the story of a divorced single mother who fought racism, sexism and abuse to make a name for herself. Her thirst for fame came at a heavy price...losing the one she loved most. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAA

THE F*CK AM I DOING?
Music by Emily Rose Simons; Lyrics by Ali Keller Turning thirty means that “Finding yourself, figuring out what you want to be, and who you want to be with” is about to get a lot less charming and a lot more sad. The F*ck Am I Doing? is a concert series for the aging millennials who are still trying to find their place, their purpose, or their person — written by aging millennials who can relate to that #struggle.

THE OLDENBURG SUITE
Music by Matthew Dylan Rose; Lyrics by James Feinberg The Oldenburg Suite is a sung-through musical about twelve tumultuous years in the lives of sculptor Claes Oldenburg, his wife, artist and art historian Coosje van Bruggen, and his brother Richard, Director of the Museum of Modern Art. A saga of seventies self-invention narrated by Andy Warhol, the show follows Claes as he struggles to overcome his audience’s preconceptions, Coosje as she becomes an artist in her own right, and Richard as he fights to lend stability to the strike-rattled MoMA. 2019 CREATED BY NYMF
STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The NYMF Student Leadership Program (SLP) provides training and mentoring to students interested in careers in musical theatre. NYMF accepts applications each spring from both undergraduate and graduate students, ultimately selecting a group of leaders. They are assigned roles of producer, director, music director, stage manager, casting director, and marketing director — depending on their areas of interest — under the mentorship and supervision of the Festival staff. NYMF provides both a production budget and the Festival’s technical resources to underwrite an original concert. In addition to the students serving on the creative team, the concert is entirely written and performed by their fellow students. NYMF strives to include students from as many schools as possible in SLP and gives them the chance to forge meaningful relationships with their peers at other institutions. This year’s SLP participants hail from University of Southern California, University of Central Oklahoma, Vassar College, and New York University. t Pho
