Back in 2003 when we were planning NYMF’s first season, many people doubted we’d find enough new musicals to fill our slate. Ten years later, more than 350 shows have made it to the stage at NYMF – and we’ve got as exciting a line-up as ever!

As always, NYMF has something for everyone – and more: everything from volleyball players to magicians, soap operas to nightclubs, rock-and-roll to operetta, and everything in between. And the NYMF Hub at The Pershing Square Signature Center features a café and bar, an information center and a box office – not to mention an array of free panel discussions, performances, and talkbacks with the casts and creators of this year’s shows. So join us!

Thank you to the generous community that makes this musical abundance possible: artists who practically donate their talents, producers who take risks on unfamiliar authors and titles, and donors and audiences who embrace the Festival as a valued event on New York’s cultural calendar.

More than 85 of the musicals that have premiered at NYMF have gone on to enjoy award-winning runs in our city and around the country, and we look forward to even more of the exciting shows debuting this year achieving the same success.

Welcome to the 2013 New York Musical Theatre Festival!

Like all New Yorkers, the New York City Council and I take tremendous pride in our city’s reputation as one of the world’s great cultural centers.

Among the many amazing cultural attractions that our city has to offer is the New York Musical Theatre Festival’s annual festival. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, and recently honored with a special Drama Desk Award, this three-weeklong festival has grown into the largest annual musical theatre event in the nation. From traditional musical comedies to edgy satires, to new takes on your favorite stories, there’s truly something for everyone, and I’m sure that this year’s Festival will be one of their best yet.

Before the music begins, I would like to thank the New York Musical Theatre Festival and its dedicated board and staff for all of the wonderful work that they’re doing to help support the arts and culture in New York City. Our Mission

10 Years of Creating and Nurturing New Musical Theatre

T

hough song and dance have long played an important role in storytelling, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century in New York that book, music, and lyrics came together for the first time to form what we know today as the “book musical.” Whether you attribute this moment of distinction to The Black Crook or to Show Boat, by the early 1900s it was clear that a remarkably different and uniquely American new art form was being born: musical theatre.

Like any great art form, musical theatre is shaped by the events and philosophies of the day. The strength and vitality of musical theatre lie in its ability to stay fresh and relevant. It was with that idea in mind, ten years ago, that the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) was created – to

The first Festival, staged in 2004, featured over 30 new fully staged full-length musicals and was met with critical and popular acclaim. More than 350 shows have premiered at the Festival since then, featuring more than 8,000 artists and entertaining more than 300,000 audience members. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have, in turn, gone on to further successes on and Off-Broadway, across the country, and around the globe – reaching literally millions of theatergoers worldwide.

This year, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award recognizing its first decade of creating and nurturing new musical theatre, ensuring the future of this essential art form.

NYMF is musical theater’s answer to the independent film movement, combining a grassroots festival model with a technical framework geared specifically to musicals, right in the backyard of the world’s largest theatre district – midtown Manhattan.

NYMF provides or subsidizes all the key components needed to realize a show, from theaters and technical equipment to marketing, industry, and audience outreach, giving independent artists and emerging producers resources and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise access or afford.

NYMF is for writers. By making it possible for dozens of musical theatre writers each year to professionally realize their shows in three dimensions with top-notch actors, directors, and designers, NYMF gives authors the essential chance to hone their craft, their projects, and their professional networks. NYMF provides individualized support to many of its participants, including the ten Next Link Project teams

NYMF shows range from the serious to the ridiculous, from conventional musical comedies to avant-garde works, from operetta to punk rock, and everything in between. As an audience member, you have a unique opportunity to sample an unprecedented array of work, to take risks on new artists, and to see some of the hottest musical theatre talent tackling new roles in an intimate, affordable setting.

The Festival is fueled by our year-round programs The annual Festival is the culmination of several year-round, ongoing programs that are the focus of NYMF’s mission:  The Next Link Project is our primary writer service program (see page 11).

 The NYMF Gala is our star-studded fall event celebrating the successes of the Festival (see page 19).

 NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation is our talent competition and master class designed to find extraordinary new musical theatre performers (see page 13).

 Educational Initiatives include the Student Leadership Program (see page 15), as well as our series of master classes, workshops, and panel discussions (see page 47 and calendar insert).

O

ne of NYMF’s flagship programs, NYMF’s Next Link Project is open to any writer – produced or unproduced, with or without agency representation. The program receives hundreds of submissions from all over the world each fall, and every script and demo recording are reviewed by numerous members of NYMF’s Reading Committee. A double-blind screening process, designed to ensure it is the quality of the work and not the name of the author that guides our readers, culminates in a select group of finalists being reviewed by a Grand Jury of leading musical theatre artists and producers.

Finally, ten shows are awarded production spots in the Festival.

Once selected, the writing teams embark on an intense development process in preparation for their Festival productions with help from NYMF every step of the way, including seminars on fundraising, logistics, marketing, and producing led by industry professionals; networking events; dramaturgical support; a $5,000 production subsidy; casting assistance; and the immense marketing and industry exposure that comes with appearing at NYMF.

The New York Musical Theatre Festival and Popjam Productions present

YMF’s Next Broadway Sensation (NNBS) combines singing competition and master class to discover the stars of tomorrow and give them their big break today. While receiving coaching from some of musical theatre’s leading artists and hottest emerging writers, performers compete to claim the ultimate prize: their very own solo concert produced by NYMF.

The search is on for Broadway’s next undiscovered talent!

Contestants have gone on to appear in numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including American Idiot, Dogfight, F#%king Up Everything, Hair, Les Miserables, South Pacific, West Side Story, and more.

NNBS auditions are open to any adult performer who has not yet appeared on Broadway. From hundreds of auditioners, twenty contestants are chosen to compete in a series of performance heats, singing for a live audience and a panel of industry judges who provide guidance and feedback to the contestants. Past celebrity judges have included Jonathan Groff, Marc Shaiman, Tom Kitt, Andrea McArdle, Lucy Simon and Gavin Creel, among others.

After the contestants are whittled down to a smaller group of Grand Finalists, each performer is assigned a mentor from among the most prominent new theatre composers; working directly with those writers, the Finalists perform a special showcase concert sponsored

After one final round of competition, a contestant is crowned NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation and begins planning his or her personal showcase concert, to be held several months later at Broadway’s hotspot, 54 Below!

THE Student Leadership Project T

he NYMF Student Leadership Program (SLP) provides training and mentoring to students who are interested in careers in musical theatre. NYMF accepts applications each spring from both undergraduate and graduate students, ultimately selecting a group of eight to ten student leaders. As a company, these student leaders curate and produce an evening of new work for the Festival, featuring work written and performed by their fellow students.

Building the next generation of musical theatre producers and practitioners

NYMF provides both a production budget and the Festival’s own technical resources to underwrite the SLP concert. Individual student leaders are assigned roles from producer to director to literary manager to casting director, depending on their areas of interest, under the mentorship and supervision of Festival staff.

The SLP company strives to include students from as many schools as possible and gives students the chance to forge meaningful relationships with their peers at other institutions. SLP participants have hailed from Barnard College, Baruch College, Columbia University, Fordham University, The King’s College, Manhattanville College, Marymount Manhattan College, The New School, New York University, Princeton University, and The University of Florida.

madame walker and the divine dream Book and Lyrics by Steve Mackes; Music by Joseph Vernon Banks On the eve of their 1921 company convention, the associates of America’s first black millionaire businesswoman gather to pay tribute to their deceased leader.

As they re-enact the supposed divine dream that led to Madame Walker’s miracle hair formula, it remains to be seen whether or not her own daughter, Leila, will put their financial differences in the past and show up to pay her respects.

Participants will develop and write a song over the course of the week, culminating in the opportunity to perform their work and receive feedback from Tony ®-nominated composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, The Wild Party).

Susan Blackwell made an indelible impression at NYMF 2004 in the endlessly original [title of show], in a role that took her to Broadway and beyond.

Nine years later, she’s back at the Festival, playing coach Kim Brindell in Volleygirls, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

What brings you back to NYMF? I did a reading of Volleygirls a few months ago, and I completely fell in in love with the whole project: the creative team, the cast, and the material. It brought me so much joy!

Any surprising untold stories or favorite memories from [title of show]?

When we submitted [title of show] to NYMF, it told the story of four friends trying to get their show into the 1st Annual New York Musical Theatre Festival. NYMF’s founding

executive director, Kris Stewart, contacted us to make sure our submission was not some elaborate hoax we were trying to perpetrate on the Festival. Ten years later, the truth can be told. HA HA, NYMF! YOU GOT PUNKED! BURNED YA! What has your participation in NYMF contributed to your career?

Performing [title of show] at NYMF was a real turning point. It’s when we connected with a bona fide Broadway producer (Kevin

McCollum), which made it possible for the show to be produced commercially both on and Off-Broadway. That moment at NYMF changed our lives and I will forever be grateful for that.

How is NYMF different the second time around?

Let’s see… I’m ten years older, and ten years hotter. What else? We performed [title of show] in the now-defunct, awesome, dirty Belt Theater, where most of the audience was looking down on us from a balcony. It was sort of like performing in a Mexican cockfighting ring. Volleygirls is in the sparkly new Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center. NYMF smells better this time around.

What have you been doing since your last NYMF appearance?

I figured out my purpose in life: To free people’s creative self expression! Toni

Morrison said, “The function of freedom is to free others.” With the lessons I learned from making [title of show], I feel like I have been freed creatively. So I founded Susan Blackwell & Co, and I’m partnering with other like-minded, compassionate artists and thought leaders, using every tool I have – teaching, writing, performing, speaking, and interviewing – on a mission to empower people to free their creativity.

Why should artists participate in NYMF? Love of the game, son! It’s fun to tell stories with music, yo!

Besides [title of show], what is your favorite NYMF show?

It’s a three-way tie. I saw Gutenberg! The Musical! four times, and Altar Boyz four times. I love them both so much. But then, along came Volleygirls. These girls are giving those boys a run for their money....

Hunter Bell contacts Susan to see if she’d like to collaborate on an as-yet-untitled Bowen/Bell musical. Susan tells Hunter she’ll consider it, but secretly plans to tell him to “suck on it.” The next day, Hunter informs her that she’s been written into the piece, whether she likes it or not.

[title of show] sits its fat ass down in the Vineyard Theatre for an Off-Broadway run and makes an original cast recording. Susan begins teaching others to free themselves creatively in the ‘Die Vampire, Die!’ workshop.
