July 7 - July 27, 2015
Welcome to The New York Musical Theatre Festival. As the world’s premier musical theatre event, we will once again present an unrivaled display of eclectic new work through July 27. For a dozen years, the Festival has presented an astounding annual feast of culture, entertainment, and discovery in the form of musicals and concerts. Whether you’re here for a singular sensation or the full monty of all 52 offerings, this year’s events are sure to provide great joy. Our Festival campus along 42nd Street again includes The Pershing Square Signature Center, PTC Performance Space, The Laurie Beechman Theatre at the West Bank Cafe, and Theatre Row. We’re also delighted to add the charming and intimate Theater 3 on nearby West 43rd Street. These first-class venues provide exceptional patron experiences, so we hope you’ll visit them all. As always, we’re indebted to many people – to the hundreds of writers, directors, designers, producers, actors, and crew members; to the NYMF staff, each of whom carries their love of this art form to work every day; and to our board, sponsors, and donors who steadfastly provide leadership, funding, and support. NYMF 2015 WELCOME The City of New York Office of the Mayor New York, NY 10007
Dear Friends,
July 7 - July 27, 2015
It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 12th season of The New York Musical Theatre Festival. My administration is dedicated to ensuring that the tremendous diversity of our city is reflected in our extraordinary cultural life and that all people have the opportunity to experience the arts. Since 2004, The New York Musical Theatre Festival has worked to expand New York’s theater community by supporting emerging artists and showcasing innovative works that explore new and diverse viewpoints and a wide array of themes and cultures. The Festival provides artists with the resources and funding to mount full-scale productions, offering them the opportunity to share their work with a wider audience and with industry leaders. Thanks to NYMF, many of the musicals featured over the past 12 years have gone on to further productions and found great success in theaters on Broadway and around the globe. As an international capital of the performing arts, our city is proud to be known as an incubator for tomorrow’s biggest shows, and I applaud this organization for ensuring that we maintain this reputation for many years to come. On behalf of all New Yorkers, congratulations to all of the productions being featured here this month. Please accept my best wishes for a wonderful Festival, and enjoy the show! Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio Mayor TICKETS AT NYMF.ORG OR 212-352-3101

Before the music begins, I would like to thank everyone at NYMF for the important work that they continue to do year after year to help ensure that New York remains a place where new musical theatre works can be enjoyed and experienced by all. NYMF 2015 ABOUT NYMF
From West Side Story to Rent, from On the Town to In The Heights, from 42nd Street to If/Then, one thing is certain: musicals and New York City go hand in hand. Though song and dance have long played an important role in storytelling, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century in New York that book, music, and lyrics came together for the first time to form what we know today as the “book musical.” It is clear that even the earliest musicals were shaped and nourished by this city, influenced by the rumble of the subway train and the rattle of the taxis. Even when it is not explicitly stated, New York City is a character in so many of the musicals we love, just as musical theatre is part of the identity of New York. In 2004, The New York Musical Theatre Festival was launched to provide a platform for artists to continue to mount exciting new works in the heart of New York’s theatre district.
In 2013, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award that recognized a decade of creating and nurturing new musical theatre. Since the first Festival, more than 375 shows have been presented, featuring thousands of artists. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have gone on to further successes on and Off-Broadway, across the country, and around the globe – reaching millions of theatergoers worldwide.
WRITERS LIVE HERE
By making it possible for dozens of musical theatre writers each year to professionally realize their shows in three dimensions with top-notch actors, directors, and designers, NYMF gives authors the essential chance to hone their craft, their projects, and their professional networks. NYMF provides individualized attention to its many participants, including the ten Next Link Project teams who receive dramaturgical support, guidance building a creative and production team, industry networking assistance, and financial subsidies to ensure that their Festival debut is as successful as possible.
NYMF combines a grassroots festival model with a technical framework geared specifically to musicals. The Festival provides or subsidizes all the key components needed to realize a show, from theaters and technical equipment to marketing support and industry and audience outreach, giving independent artists and emerging producers resources and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise access or afford.

NYMF 2015 ABOUT NYMF THE NEXT LINK PROJECT One of NYMF’s flagship programs, NYMF’s Next Link Project is open to any writer – produced or unproduced, with or without agency representation. The program receives hundreds of submissions from all over the world each fall, and every script and demo recording is reviewed by numerous members of NYMF’s Reading Committee. A doubleblind screening process, designed to ensure that the quality of the work and not the name of the author guides our readers, culminates in a select group of finalists being reviewed by a Grand Jury of leading musical theatre artists and producers. Finally, ten shows are awarded production spots in the Festival.
NYMF’s writer service program empowers ten teams of musical theatre writers each year by providing entrepreneurial training, career networking opportunities, dramaturgical support, and other services culminating in a subsidized production in the Festival.
Once selected, the writing teams embark on an intense development process in preparation for their Festival productions with help from NYMF every step of the way. NYMF offers guidance in many forms, including varied seminars – on fundraising, marketing, producing, and more – led by industry professionals, networking events, dramaturgical support, a $5000 production subsidy, casting assistance, and the immense marketing and industry exposure that comes with appearing at NYMF. This year’s Grand Jury included Tony Award®-winning actor Michael Cerveris, OBIE and Drama Desk Award-winning actress Donna Lynne Champlin, Tony Award-winning producer Jane Dubin, Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Award-nominated actor Hunter Foster, NYMF Founder Emeritus Isaac Robert Hurwitz, theatre agent Joe Machota, OBIE Awardwinning director and producer Jonathan McCrory, Tony and GRAMMY® Award-winning actor Billy Porter, Outer Critics Circle-nominated director and choreographer Josh Prince, Tony Award and Drama Desk-nominated actor and writer Tony Sheldon, and director and writer Charles Randolph-Wright.
Being a part of the Next Link Project not only helped our team manage all the minute details of putting up a fantastic production, but it also connected us with dedicated industry members we’ve continued to work with after NYMF. We greatly expanded our understanding of producing, lined up our next project, and even got agents from our participation in Next Link.” — Becca Anderson, bookwriter and lyricist of Academia Nuts, Next Link ‘14 Photo: Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Todd Cerveris, and Jennifer Simard in Academia Nuts (Micah Joel)
Submissions for the 2016 Next Link Project will be accepted starting Fall 2015. Visit nymf.org for details on how to submit.

NYMF 2015 ABOUT NYMF NEXT BROADWAY SENSATION NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation (NNBS) combines singing competition and master class to discover the stars of tomorrow and give them their big break today. While receiving coaching from some of musical theatre’s leading artists and hottest emerging writers, performers compete to claim the ultimate prize: their very own solo concert produced by NYMF. Contestants have gone on to appear in numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including Once, American Idiot, Dogfight, F#%king Up Everything, Hair, Les Miserables, South Pacific, West Side Story, and Violet. Last year’s winner, Kathryn Allison, recently made her Broadway debut in Aladdin. NNBS auditions are open to any adult performer who has not yet appeared on Broadway. From hundreds of auditionees, 20 contestants are chosen to compete in a series of performance heats, singing for a live audience and a panel of industry judges who provide guidance and feedback to the contestants. Past celebrity judges have included Jeremy Jordan, Jonathan Groff, Marc Shaiman, J. Robert Spencer, Tom Kitt, Andrea McArdle, Lucy Simon, and Gavin Creel, among others. After the contestants are whittled down to a smaller group of Grand Finalists, each performer is assigned a mentor from among the most prominent new theatre composers. Working directly with those writers, the Finalists perform a special showcase concert sponsored by The ASCAP Foundation. After one final round of competition, a contestant is crowned NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation and begins planning his or her personal showcase concert, which takes place several months later as part of that year’s Festival!
The search is on for Broadway’s next great performer!
Being a part of NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation was an unforgettable experience. I got to be coached by and perform for one of my favorite composers Ryan Scott Oliver, and receive feedback from industry professionals. What more could I want?! I’m humbled to be this year’s winner and can’t wait to perform at one my favorite venues, The Laurie Beechman Theatre, this summer!” — Kathryn Allison, 2014 NNBS Winner Photo: Kathryn Allison and runner-up Paul Ianniello

THE 2015 NEW YORK MUSICAL THEATRE FESTIVAL • JULY 7-27
NYMF 2015 ABOUT NYMF STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The NYMF Student Leadership Program (SLP) provides training and mentoring to students interested in careers in musical theatre. NYMF accepts applications each spring from both undergraduate and graduate students, ultimately selecting a group of student leaders. They are assigned roles of producer, director, stage manager, casting director, or marketing director – depending on their areas of interest – under the mentorship and supervision of Festival staff.
Building the next generation of musical theatre producers and practitioners.
NYMF provides both a production budget and the Festival’s technical resources to underwrite an original concert devised and assembled by the SLP team. In addition to the students serving on the creative team, the concert is entirely written and performed by their fellow students. NYMF strives to include students from as many schools as possible in the SLP and gives students the chance to forge meaningful relationships with their peers at other institutions. This year’s SLP participants hail from Harvard University, New York University, Stanford University, The King’s College, and University of Chicago. This year, the SLP Student Leaders present an evening of new work, Beyond Words, on Saturday, July 18 at 9pm and Sunday, July 19 at 8pm. The concert will be performed at Theater 3. See page 29 for more information. Join us and see what the next generation is up to!
The Student Leadership Program is an invaluable opportunity for aspiring young theatre professionals to gain real world experience. Serving as the Marketing Director for two concert series gave me the confidence to network with professionals and taught me responsibility and creativity. Since NYMF, I have gone on to plan the social media agenda for an entire season for a thriving up-and-coming musical theatre company.” — Fatima Cadet-Diaby, 2014 Student Leader

NYMF 2015 HONORARY CHAIR The interesting thing about music-theatre is its ephemeral nature. Once you are not there, you are always not there. You can record it...(and archive it), but it’s not the same as being in the presence of that feeling and that electricity. It’s the real deal and happens in real time.” — Jeanine Tesori (DC Theater Scene)
Jeanine Tesori, NYMF 2015 Honorary Chair 2015 Tony Award® winner for Best Score for Fun Home “As our Honorary Chair, Jeanine Tesori’s landmark success as the composer of Fun Home is particularly pertinent to NYMF’s mission. Jeanine and Lisa Kron (lyrics and book) made history as the first female writing team to win the Tony Award for Fun Home’s score. Their achievement illuminates NYMF’s focus on broadening the field of emerging musical theatre writers. In her acceptance speech, Jeanine’s advice was direct: ‘For girls, you have to see it to be it.’ We are enormously proud of Jeanine’s tremendous body of work and her energetic support of our goals.” — Dan Markley, Executive Director & Producer of The New York Musical Theatre Festival JEANINE TESORI won the Tony Award for Best Original Score with Lisa Kron for the musical Fun Home, which is currently playing on Broadway. She has also written Tony-nominated scores for Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center; Thoroughly Modern Millie (lyrics, Dick Scanlan); Caroline, or Change (lyrics, Tony Kushner); and Shrek The Musical (lyrics, David LindsayAbaire). The production of Caroline, or Change at the National Theatre in London received the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Her 1997 Off-Broadway musical Violet (lyrics, Brian Crawley) opened on Broadway in 2014 and garnered four Tony nominations, including Best Musical Revival. Opera: A Blizzard on Marblehead Neck (libretto, Tony Kushner; Glimmerglass) and The Lion, The Unicorn, and Me (libretto, J. D. McClatchy, Kennedy Center). Music for plays: Mother Courage (dir. George C. Wolfe, with Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline), John Guare’s A Free Man of Color (Lincoln Center Theater, dir. George C. Wolfe), and Romeo and Juliet (Delacorte Gala). Film scores: Nights in Rodanthe, Every Day, and You’re Not You. Ms. Tesori is a member of the Dramatists Guild and was cited by the ASCAP as the first female composer to have “two new musicals running concurrently on Broadway.” She is a lecturer in music at Yale University. Most of all, she is the proud parent of Siena Rafter, a junior at LaGuardia High School for the Arts.

NYMF 2015 SUPPORT US PATRONS & SUPPORTERS NYMF’s Patrons and Supporters provide valuable funds that aid NYMF’s efforts to enable composers, librettists, and lyricists at every stage of their careers – from emerging to established – while enjoying the best of what the Festival has to offer. Patron perks include priority access to the best seats, concierge ticketing services, access to invitation-only events, our Opening Night Celebration, and more. By joining our Patrons Circle, you’ll play a critical part in nurturing the creation of new musical theatre for decades to come.
On behalf of the Staff and Board of Directors of The New York Musical Theatre Festival, we thank our many Patrons and Supporters for making NYMF 2015 possible.
$27.50
Since it was launched in 2004, NYMF has been one of the best entertainment values in New York City. The Festival promotes access to a broad and diverse audience by offering tickets to its shows for a maximum price of only $27.50. The low cost attracts many who may not otherwise be able to afford to see as much live theatre as they would like. We can offer these prices because of the generous support of people like you.
30%
Did you know that ticket sales account for only 30% of NYMF’s annual operating budget? Contributed income – from our Patrons, Supporters, and Passholders – accounts for nearly half of our annual budget. We sincerely appreciate the participation of our current Patrons and hope you will join us.
As NYMF Patrons we get to accomplish important and equally rewarding goals: (1) we help provide developmental support for a vital and dynamic art form, and (2) we are able to enjoy the extraordinary talent of the amazing artistic teams of the exciting new shows every Festival season. What more could any musical theatre fan ask for?” — George Hardy, Patron Photo: NYMF Board members and Patrons mingle at the 2015 Patron Preview. (Jake Nathanson)

NYMF 2015 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Riley Thomas is one of NYMF’s most exciting up-and-coming writers. His show Stuck won multiple awards in the 2012 Festival, and he followed that with a concert in 2013 featuring songs from four of his shows. We’re excited to welcome Riley back this year with a full production of Wearing Black. What has your participation in NYMF contributed to your career? NYMF was the ultimate kickstart to my career as both a writer and a producer. The developmental assistance has brought my work to a new level, and the Festival itself is a crash course in producing. NYMF’s greatest contribution to my career is the network of passionate people all looking to advance the medium of musical theatre. Every project I’ve worked on since has a direct tie to relationships I developed at NYMF. What keeps you coming back to NYMF? When it comes to developing my work, I simply don’t get what I need from anything other than putting it up in front of an audience. NYMF is the perfect environment to foster my kind of creativity: a well-respected platform that provides me with Broadway-caliber collaborators, supportive audiences, industry and critical feedback, exposure and more. But at the end of the day, I just enjoy it so damn much. Any surprising untold stories or favorite memories from your NYMF shows? My brother and I grew up watching the film Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Our favorite character was the wise-cracking cab driver played by Mel Johnson Jr. We quoted him so much to each other growing up that I put a line in the original script of Stuck in homage to the character. The line made it through draft after draft, surviving all the way to NYMF where the character who said it was played by none other then Mel Johnson Jr. himself! It is easily the most serendipitous moment of my career.
Why should artists participate in NYMF? No matter what stage of its life your work is in, NYMF and its network have access to anything you could possibly need to develop it. Whether it’s dramaturgical support or production/ personnel assistance, they can point you in the right direction. They’re not going to do it for you, which is the best part. You’re going to walk away from your NYMF experience having grown as an artist. I’ve often said I should be the spokesperson for NYMF, because I can’t say enough good things about it. Why should people come see Wearing Black? Watching the characters of Wearing Black struggle with love, life, and death is a gorgeous, intimate, riveting experience. It may be about death, but Evan’s journey is so dynamic it drives the action to the point where the show never wallows in itself. There’s plenty of humor, romance, and sex – it’s not all doom and gloom. If you want to be taken for a complex emotional ride by an uncomplicated show, you should come see Wearing Black.
