Sunday, November 15, 2015 The Edison Ballroom
2015 Dear Friends, Welcome to The New York Musical Theatre Festival 2015 Gala. For the second consecutive year this event marks the greatest attendance ever for a NYMF Gala and we’re grateful to you all for being with us. This celebration is momentous for the recognition of our three distinguished honorees: Martin Grant, Darren P. DeVerna, and Casey Nicholaw. It is also an extension of our ongoing celebration of theatre artists who have chosen to create musicals as their life’s work. These composers, lyricists, and librettists are the essence of the Festival and we remain dedicated to supporting their creative pursuits. The 2015 Festival brought fifty-two unique productions, readings, and events to the West 42nd Street corridor. As is our trademark, an eclectic and diverse slate of musicals brought choice and discovery to our patrons. Most shows sold out and we filled 20,000 seats. Our Honorary Chair, Jeanine Tesori, anchored the stunning Women of Note Concert and Tom Kitt thrilled his fans with a star-studded concert chronicling the historic path of Feeling Electric to its enduring success as Next to Normal. As we celebrate the great success of 2015 tonight, our focus is trained on next summer and beyond. With your help, we will raise an historic amount of funds tonight to expand the work we do – specifically, more financial, creative, and producing support for stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals. The 2016 Festival is beginning to take shape and we’re facing the happy challenge of improving on our success, but this team is absolutely eager and capable of accomplishing that goal. Our honorees Martin, Darren, and Casey represent a cross-section of the core support system for NYMF and the musical theatre community. They have each continued to reach ever higher levels of achievement throughout their stellar careers. We honor them for having dedicated their professional lives to the theatre, particularly to musical theatre, and for their enduring contributions to the musical theatre canon and our industry. Thank you all for gathering with us this evening and we look forward to seeing you next summer! Best Wishes,
Dan Markley Executive Director & Producer

Musicals Live Here From West Side Story to Rent, from On the Town to Hamilton, from 42nd Street to If/Then, one thing is certain: musicals and New York City go hand in hand. Though song and dance have long played an important role in storytelling, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century in New York that book, music, and lyrics came together for the first time to form what we know today as the “book musical.” It is clear that even the earliest musicals were shaped and nourished by this city, influenced by the rumble of the subway train and the rattle of the taxis. Even when it is not explicitly stated, New York City is a character in so many of the musicals we love, just as musical theatre is part of the identity
Our Mission The New York Musical Theatre Festival nurtures the creation, production, and public presentation of stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals to ensure the future vitality of musical theatre.
of New York. In 2004, The New York Musical Theatre Festival was launched to provide a platform for artists to continue to mount exciting new works in the heart of New York’s theatre district. NYMF combines a grassroots festival model with a technical framework geared specifically to musicals. The Festival provides or subsidizes all the key components needed to realize a show, from theaters and technical equipment to marketing support and industry and audience outreach, giving independent artists and emerging producers resources and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise access or afford. In 2013, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award that recognized a decade of creating and nurturing new musical theatre. Since the first Festival, nearly 400 shows have been presented, featuring thousands of artists. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have gone on to further successes on and Off-Broadway, across the country, and around the globe – reaching millions of theatergoers worldwide.
“I think that new musical theatre is incredibly important because there are so many young artists out there that need a chance to develop their new works and find their own voices in a larger environment ... NYMF is the chance for those young up-and-comers to find their voice ... and really give them that real, raw, experience.” —Jeremy Jordan
Tonight’s Gala helps us raise the funds to continue nurturing and supporting new musical theatre works for the 2016 Festival and beyond. We can’t achieve this without our patrons, supporters, musical theatre fans, actors, and writers. We thank you for your continued support of new musical theatre, and of The New York Musical Theatre Festival. Please enjoy the festivities tonight as we celebrate our honorees Darren P. DeVerna, Martin Grant, and Casey Nicholaw for their contributions to the world of musical theatre! We are so happy to have you gathered here with us tonight to support our mission: ensuring the future vitality of musical theatre. Contributions from your generous bids on our auction items tonight will help to support the following programs in the 2016 Festival: The Next Link Project — Of the hundreds of applications we receive each year, 10 musicals are selected by a Grand Jury to participate in this writer service program that develops original work by the best and brightest
emerging composers, bookwriters.
lyricists,
and
Developmental Reading Series — This program is designed to make each musical as strong as possible, to give dramaturgical support in the process, and to allow the writers to gather audience feedback that informs the rewrite process. Student Leadership Program — This program provides training and mentoring to students interested in careers in musical theatre. NYMF accepts applications each spring from both undergraduate and graduate students, ultimately selecting a group of student leaders. They are assigned roles of producer, director, stage manager, casting director, or marketing director – depending on their areas of interest – under the mentorship and supervision of Festival staff. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our patrons and donors here tonight. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the festivities!
