Tailor your search to specific activities, including birdwatching, camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, or shooting. Mark favorite locations to quickly find them again. Feral hogs are highly destructive and prolific pests. They cause significant damage to wildlife habitat, compete with native wildlife for food, prey upon native wildlife, destroy nests of birds such as turkeys, degrade natural areas and agricultural fields, pollute ponds and streams, and spread diseases to livestock, people, and pets. Feral hogs are a menace that must be eliminated in Missouri. Report Feral Hogs ◾ Report feral hog sightings and damage to 573-522-4115, ext. 3296. ◾ Releasing hogs into the wild is illegal. If you see someone releasing hogs, report violators to your local conservation agent. ◾ During deer and turkey seasons, opportunistic take of feral hogs by hunt ers with an unfilled deer or turkey hunting permit is allowed on lands owned, leased, or managed by the Conservation Department. Outside of deer and turkey seasons, the taking of feral hogs is prohibited on lands owned, leased, or managed by the Conservation Department. The Conservation Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Ani mal and Plant Health Inspection Service, along with private landowners and other partners, are working to eliminate feral hogs in Missouri. Hogs are social animals that travel in groups called sounders. Shooting one or two hogs scatters the sounder and makes trapping efforts aimed at catching the entire group at once more difficult. With their high reproductive rate, remov ing only one or two hogs does not help to reduce populations. Anyone who observes a feral hog or damage caused by feral hogs should report it to the Conservation Department rather than shooting the animal. Feral Hogs GENERAL INFORMATION

Often, after returning from a trip, the hunter simply puts his first aid kit away with the other gear, but if it was used for any purpose, tha gets put away incomplete Inst ocking your kit before your n estock it as soon as you retu you plan on traveling again soon

can also be purchased from any vendor for $2.

If you want to make your own kit, do a little bit of research on what you should include for the type of trip you ’ re taking Keep in mind the terrain, weather and the number of people going with you Along with the essential medicines and bandages, remember to include some type of easy reference manual that can

provide you with first aid instructions should something happen

At right is a basic list of items to in

Because first aid kits aren't used very often, the supplies can get damaged or expire Kits protect their contents to a certain extent, but hunting trips are rough on gear, no matter how protected it is Moisture and harsh treatment can ruin supplies Once packages get ripped open they lose their sterility Medications and ointments can expire For this rea son, check your kit before and after every trip

have a new interactive online offering in addition to existing hunter education courses. The Missouri Depart ment of Conservation (MDC) has expanded its partnership with the hunter safety course

Kalkomey Enterpris es, LLC, to offer a new fun and engaging, game-style learn ing option through the online site ilearntohunt.com/.

“This new immersive, sce nario-based offering allows hunter education participants to have game-like experienc es by creating avatars and se lecting their preferred game species and geographies,” explained MDC Hunter Educa tion and Shooting Range Co ordinator Justin McGuire.

the new online offering at player.vimeo.com/ 706253380?h=0a9f3bc413.

McGuire added that the new online option provides immediate quality feedback on real-time decision making for more than 50 in-course

exercises. “They’re really fun and engaging, and they still cover all of our hunter educa tion standards,” he said.

The new online offering will place participants based on their age at the time of registration. Participants 1115 years of age will complete the knowledge portion online but will still be required to take an in-person skills ses sion. Participants 16 years of age and older can complete the entire certification re quirement through the online course.

The cost for the new online Interactive Knowledge Course is $39.95 paid to the online course provider. The price of the online Traditional Knowl edge Course is $24.95. The self-study guide and class room sessions are free, along with the in-person skill ses sion and final exam.

Missouri’s hunter educa tion course is required for any hunter born on or after Jan. 1, 1967, unless exempt. MDC offers a two-step format for hunters 11 to 15 years of age that consists of a knowledge portion taken online, through a self-study guide, or in a classroom setting followed by a four-hour skills session and final exam. Missouri residents 16 years of age and older can complete the entire program online without the need for

a skill session. Learn more about MDC’s Hunter Educa tion program at mdc.mo.gov/ huntereducation.

“MDC has a proud history of providing hunter education going back to 1957 when it began as a voluntary course in Missouri,” said McGuire. “Since then, MDC has provid ed hunter education training and certification to about 1.4 million Missourians.”

He added that MDC’s hunter education offerings have changed over the years to meet the changing needs of the public. “The new offer ings are a perfect example,” McGuire said. “Participants of all ages will find these interac tive courses engaging and fun with just the right amount of challenge.”

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites landowners, land managers, and contractors to harness the power of prescribed fire to both achieve their landmanagement goals and ben efit native plants and wildlife through the updated training -- Prescribed Burning for Mis souri Land Managers.

Prescribed burning mim ics the historical occurrence of fire that shaped our plant communities, but it is con ducted under a prescription of specified environmental con ditions, such as temperature, humidity, fuel moisture, wind speed and direction.

Landowners, land man agers, and contractors can become certified prescribed

burn managers through a self-paced three-hour online prescribed burn course fol lowed by an all-day field ex ercise to demonstrate skills learned. There is a $25 fee for the online course, but the cost may be covered through a coupon or agency code from an MDC private land conserva tionist.

Special Provision During the Firearms Deer Season: During the November portion statewide and antlerless portion in open counties, shot must be no larger than No. 4. This restriction does not apply to landowners hunting on land they own.

About Pheasants

Ring-necked pheasants were introduced to the United States from China in the 1880s and have become one of the nation’s most popular game birds. Unlike many species not native to an area, pheasants have few negative impacts on native wildlife.

Pheasants have been able to thrive in agricultural areas where some native species, such as prairie chickens, have not. Early agricultural practices including the planting of small grain crops, large native grass hayfields, and weedy crop fields provided excellent nesting and brood-rearing habitat for the birds.

Pheasant hunting requires little equipment and is a great way to spend time outdoors with family and friends.

Pheasant Populations

Intensification of agriculture and the loss of Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP, acres throughout the Midwest have led to a decrease in pheasant habitat across their established range.

To bolster populations, wild pheasants from existing populations in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota were released from 1987–2000. A few areas, mainly in northern Missouri, continue to hold steady populations of birds. Pheasant harvest in Missouri peaked in 1990 with 24,479 hunters harvesting nearly 90,000 birds. In the 2016–2017 season, 7,433 hunters took just over 22,431 birds.

Landowners in Missouri’s pheasant range can help populations by providing ample nesting and broodrearing habitat. Native warm-season grass mixes and brome fields tend to provide good nesting opportuni ties, and as with bobwhite quail, diverse patches of mixed grasses, and forbs attract hundreds of insect species that pheasant chicks must have to fuel their rapid growth.

Getting Started

Hunters may take pheasants statewide. This change was made 4 years ago because pheasants are already geographically limited in the state. And because harvest is restricted to male birds only, it does not impact the population.

Pheasant-Hunting Gear

• Hunting vest (preferably orange)

• Comfortable hunting boots

• Shotgun, generally a 12 gauge, loaded with #5 or #6 shot

• Most hunters use a more constricted shot pattern for pheasant hunting than they do for quail. A modified or full choke is recommended.

Well-trained bird dogs are an asset for hunting large, grassy fields, but a few hunters walking side-by-side across a field can also experience the explosive flush of a pheasant.

Where to Find Pheasants

Pheasants are most abundant in northwest Missouri and portions of northeast Missouri. Conservation areas with good populations of pheasants are few. For more detailed information on where to find pheasants, call MDC’s Northwest or Northeast Regional Office. As always, be sure to obtain landowner permission before hunting on private land.

Tips and Tricks

Hunting into the wind with close working dogs while being as quiet as possible helps to keep birds from becoming nervous and flushing wild or running. This is especially important after the first week or two of the season.

To hunt on other land, landowners must purchase regular permits. ◾ Must be at least 6 years old to obtain landowner permits. ◾ May use their landowner permits to take deer on their land during archery deer season and all portions of the firearms season including the antlerless portion (if their property is located in one of the open areas). ◾ Who have 75 or more acres in more than one county must comply with landowner antlerless deer limits for each county. See Page 25. ◾ May fill no-cost or reduced-cost landowner archery and/or landowner firearms any-deer permits and regular-cost per mits. However, each hunter may take only two antlered deer during the archery and firearms deer hunting seasons combined and only one antlered deer during firearms season. For example, landowners who take an antlered deer on a landowner firearms any-deer permit may not take an antlered deer on a firearms any-deer per mit. Deer taken on a managed deer hunting permit do not count toward this limit. ◾ May fill their no-cost landowner antlerless permits and also purchase and fill additional antlerless permits according to county limits shown on Page 23.
