Donna Kay (McCracken) Guess, age 83 of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away on April 22, 2024 at the St. Luke’s Hospice House of Kansas City. Donna was born on July 23, 1940, in Trenton, Missouri, to Donald “Duck” and Mildred (Miller) McCracken.
Donna, the cheerleading Snow Queen of Tren ton High School, graduated with the class of 1958 in Trenton, Missouri, then furthered her education at Draughton Business School in Kansas City, while nannying for a set of twin boys. She returned to Trenton and worked at Montgomery Wards; Pickett, Anderck, & Hauck Law Firm; and finally Grundy Elec tric. Donna married Richard (Glee) Guess on July 31, 1965, at Trenton Baptist Church. The couple moved to Hamburg, Iowa where Glee served as the high school principal and Donna was the church secretary. During that time, son Chris was born. In 1968 they moved to Van Meter, Iowa where Glee became superintendent of schools. While in Van Meter, daughters Jill and Jodi
were born. Donna managed the Poverty Cafe, owned/managed The Bulldog Inn Ice Cream Shop, served as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout Leader, taught Sunday School, and managed several apartment complexes they owned. Next Donna and Glee headed to southern Iowa when Glee became superintendent of schools in Seymour from 1981-1996. While in Seymour, Donna held many jobs: dental assistant in Corydon, receptionist for Dr. Merritt of Seymour, Jafra skin care consultant, owner of Jose’s Pool Hall, donut and pizza maker for Casey’s General Store, babysitter for Tatum Starcevich, Seymour Housing manager, and owner of Eleanore’s Flower Kart in Trenton. Donna also served as a member/past president of PEO, Seymour Little League concession stand manager, and did the Seymour Scene for the radio. Perhaps her favorite claim to fame was throwing the opening pitch for the Kansas City Royals in July of 1994 after winning a contest sponsored by the Trenton McDonald’s. After Glee retired from Iowa, the Guesses moved to Glee’s hometown, Albany, MO. In Albany. Donna served as a paraprofessional for 2 students very dear to her heart. She loved those kids as her own.
Donna was an avid supporter of the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. She followed Mahomes, Coach Reid, Kelcie, and Taylor Swift, and loved it all! She treasured time spent with family, attending as many activities of her kids and grandkids as she physically could. Phone calls and FaceTime visits were always welcomed. Donna Kay was the queen of great one-liners with her quick wit. It was rare to have a conversation with her without at least one laughing spell. No one ever left the Guess home without a large meal. Donna would have a full buffet in a matter of minutes whenever company was coming. Watching son Chris coach girls basketball was her favorite past time. She faithfully watched Chris’s teams from Centerville, Glenwood, Ottumwa, Waukee High School, Waukee Northwest, and the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. She watched online and passionately yelled with each possession.
Donna is survived by her children: Chris (Sheri) Guess of Maryville, MO/Van Meter, IA; Jill (Kevin) Crall of Albia, IA; Jodi (Chatten) Scruggs of Lee’s Summit, MO. Grandchildren: Cassie (Colton) Cason and Callah of Pella, IA; Casey (Madison) Guess and Carter of Granger, IA; Cade Crall of Waukee, IA; Connor Guess of Lee’s Summit, MO; Charlee Scruggs of Fayetteville, AR. Roger Alan Schmitz, of Lawson Missouri, passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 52, surrounded by his loving family in a time of prayer, worship, and thanksgiving. We will praise God and celebrate his life with visitation on Sunday, May 5th, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at Church of the Annunciation in Kearney, MO, and Funeral Mass at 10:00am on Monday, May 6th, again at Church of the Annunciation. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Stanberry, MO, following Mass.
Roger was born to Raymond and Debbi (Berry) Schmitz on March 26, 1972. At the age of seven, his family moved to a farm north of Stanberry, MO, where he loved the rural lifestyle of faith, family, and farming. While a student at Stanberry R-II High School, he excelled in both academics and sports where he still holds records for achievements in basketball. During his sophomore year of high school, he
began dating his forever love, Ellen Showen, whom he married on August 13,1994. Together they raised six sons– the best crop the NW Missouri farm boy ever grew.
Roger graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelorʼs in Education in 1994. While at Mizzou, he loved working as a student assistant to the menʼs basketball program under Coach Norm Stewart. Roger completed his Masterʼs Degree in Education at Northwest Missouri State University before returning to Stanberry for three years to teach history and coach varsity boys basketball. He then taught physical education and coached varsity boys basketball in Oak Grove, MO for four years while earning his Education Specialist degree. From 2003-2022, Roger served the Lawson R-XIV school district as assistant principal for one year, assistant superintendent for eight years, and superintendent for 11 years. In all, Roger spent 26 years serving the public schools of Missouri and was often called upon by peers to speak on behalf of public education at the state general assembly. The past year, Roger shared his gifts with St. Pius X High School as Assistant to the President. For twenty years, Roger deeply loved officiating menʼs college basketball and inspired many with his ability to continue to run the court while bravely fighting cancer.
When retiring from education he stated, “Iʼve been so blessed with a beautiful wife, awesome sons, loving parents, brother, in-laws, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, colleagues, friends, and my referee brothers. They have truly made my life special.” Those who witnessed his fight for life saw the depth of commitment to his family and were deeply impacted by his faith that sustained him each step of the way. Roger and Ellen made the decision to “speak life” when faced with a difficult diagnosis, which became the mantra they shared with others, declaring that he will “live and not die and declare the glory of the Lord!” In the 25 months of that fight, he gave 100% of his energy to his family, friends, and community of faith, sacrificing daily to maintain his determined efforts to remain present in the roles that Almighty God placed him in, without complaint for the constant suffering he was experiencing. While his outer life was fading, his inner life demonstrated a beautiful example of Christ daily to those around him.
Roger leaves behind his wife Ellen of 30 years and their six sons: Andy (Lindsey) of Columbia, MO; Kevin of Colorado Springs, CO; Jayson of Charlottesville, VA; and three sons remaining in the home: Matthew, John, and Trevor. He was the proud Grandpa to one grandson, Henry, the son of Andy and Lindsey. Other survivors include his parents, Raymond and Debbi Schmitz, brother, Doug (Tammie) Schmitz, and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the Church of the Annunciation,
MO 64060. Interment was held at the Mount

DOLLARS AUCTION SERVICE 15% DISCOUNT FOR THOSE WHO SERVE... 16100 West US Hwy 136 Bethany, MO Floral, Gifts, Home Decor 660-425-6400 The Calvary Stanberry & Island City Christian Churches (Hebrews 5:12-14, For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.) The writer of Hebrews is giving a stern rebuke to those who claim to be Christians yet by their conduct exhibit a lack of understanding about God Word. In another place we are told, (2 Peter 3:17-18 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.) As Christians we are to grow in spiritual stature much the same as one grows physically from a baby to an adult, who at one time could only digest milk, but as they grow are able to consume solid food. Spiritual growth can be realized by how the Word of God is evident in the life of a believer. How can this be achieved, one might ask? Those who attain spiritual maturity achieve this by exercising their mind by using God’s word of righteousness contained within the Bible. Yes, we are to use the Word of God in such a way so that His righteousness guides our decision making and is evident to those around us. This requires daily exercise in God’s word and prayer for guidance and wisdom. The ability to discern between good and evil brings about a level of understanding so that we are not led astray by the ever-changing attitudes of society concerning right and wrong. In the world today one of the most popular phrases is, ‘Don’t judge’ as society moves farther and farther away from any concept of holiness and righteousness. As we grow in the Grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ it will become second nature to turn away from the worldly and fleshly desires as we surrender all to Jesus. Jesus Christ, the most glorious living Word of God.
