OUR MISSION | REACH people for Christ. ROOT people in Christ. And RELEASE people to serve Christ.

The Summer Playlist

Pastor Sarah Palsma & Pastor Chris Jacobsen

What are the sounds that tell you summer is here? The crack of lightning and rumbles of thunder on a hot, stormy day? The plop, splatter, and squeal of children jumping in the pool? The honking of traffic on a long road trip? The gentle hum of bees in a garden? Summer has a different rhythm and sound. The season of summer invites us to slow down and enjoy God’s gifts in creation. The Psalms remind us that the music of creation and our lives is meant to declare praise to God. In summer, as in every season, we are invited to “sing to the Lord a new song” (Ps. 149:2).

In this season, the church is invited to listen well to the Spirit, who invites us to tune our hearts and minds to God. The summer playlist at New Hope includes the majestic sounds of a new Walker organ to enhance our music ministry and support the varied styles of our church’s diverse music literature, from hymns to gospel to contemporary praise and worship The joyful noise of children diving into friendship with God at “Scuba VBS ” The pleasant chatter of adults fellowshipping with one another over coffee and cookies after worship The quiet wonder of dwelling in scripture as we engage in a sermon series on the book of Judges: Messy People, Merciful God. The excited cacophony of acts of service on the youth mission trip. The steady rhythms of prayer, rest, and renewal.

What new song is the Spirit inviting you to join in this summer? We hope that you will tune into New Hope’s summer playlist and experience Jesus’ invitation to take a real rest and “learn the unforced rhythms of grace” (Matt. 11:29, The Message).

Reach people for christ. Root people in Christ. Release People to serve Christ.

Thank you!

I thank my God every time I think of you! I always pray with joy, whenever I pray for you all, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now – Philippians 1:3-5

The church is a people, and we are extremely grateful for everyone who gives of their time and energy on Sunday mornings and throughout the week to welcome people to hear and experience the good news of Jesus Christ at New Hope. There’s always a lot going on so we wanted to take a moment to thank many of you who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make New Hope a hospitable and welcoming place.

From the care of Jeanne Skinner and the Garden Club, who weed, mulch, and plant to help us enjoy the beauty of creation, to the compassionate security presence of Deputy Doug and other Delaware County Officers, to Dave and Ina Jensen and all the Greeters who welcome you by name and encourage you to wear a name tag so you can be seen and known, to Charlie Bynner and all the dependable Ushers who guide you into worship, to the fantastic fellowship duo of Mark and Penny Dutton and many others who fill your bellies with delicious treats and offer a warm, comforting cup of coffee or tea, to Kathy Wisne and members of the Prayer Team who continue to care for you in prayer long after the worship service has ended, to Beverly Robinson and the Evangelism Team who write welcome notes, birthday cards, and anniversary cards to make sure you know how deeply loved you are and that you belong here. To the many teachers, singers, musicians, nursery caregivers, and tech helpers, thank you. Thank you all for your leadership and serving in Christ’s name.

You are encouraged to say thank you the next time you see any of these people working for the Lord. You are also invited to prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to participate in any of these areas of service. Contact Pastor Sarah if you’d like to get connected and serve.

A New Organ for a New Era

org

This summer is a unique and special time for our music ministry and congregation as we receive and install the new Walker digital organ! We are very excited to have this magnificent instrument at our disposal to enhance our diverse styles of worship and benefit our community. The organ will arrive on Tuesday, May 28th, and installation will occur over the next two weeks. To celebrate the completion of this project, we will dedicate the new instrument in an exceptional worship service at 10 am on Sunday, June 30th. This service will feature significant choral works such as "Let All The World in Every Corner Sing" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as contemporary collaborations with our band on modern anthems and the festivities do not stop there!

On Sunday, July 28th, at 4 pm, Dr. Damin Spritzer will join us from the University of Oklahoma to perform an inaugural community organ recital. We are incredibly excited to host Dr. Spritzer, as she is one of the most acclaimed American concert organists today. This concert will provide New Hope with an opportunity to introduce the organ to our local community which is incredibly exciting because our instrument will be the first Walker digital organ in all of central Ohio. While this may be a casual conversation to some, this summer's events conclude the extensive endeavor of purchasing a new organ that began in the summer of 2022.

Our journey to purchase a new organ started when we began to experience technical issues and limitations with our Allen MDS-15 digital organ. The organ was generously donated by the family of Ginger Schneider in 1992, along with our beautiful Yamaha C6 7’ grand piano. While this instrument has served the congregation for the past 30 years, it is important to remember that the purpose of a digital organ is to replicate the physical presence of a real pipe organ. These electronic instruments hit the market in the 1930s with the Hammond organ, which was patented & produced by American inventor Laurens Hammond. Throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, companies continued to develop electronic organs aimed at mimicking the presence of a real pipe organ by using analog technology, manipulating tones using analog tone generation, transistors, vacuum tubes, and other technologies of the day. It was not until 1972 that the Allen Organ Company began reproducing tones in the world’s first digital musical instrument. When the Schneider family donated our current Allen Organ, the technology was only 20 years old.

NEW Walker Organ Rendering

Today, we are in a digital age, with huge technological advancements in everyday items such as smartphones, cars, and computers. In the digital organ business, the technology has become so advanced that it can be difficult to differentiate between a digital organ and a real pipe organ Walker's unique approach to tone replication, attention to detail, and product quality have earned it a reputation as "the best."

Because of this, Walker was chosen to provide digital pipe organ substitutes for some of the most famous churches in the United States. Most notably, the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine (NYC), Christ Cathedral (formerly the Crystal Cathedral), in which a Walker electronic substitute was provided while the Hazel Wright Organ was out for restoration (2019-2022), and most recently the Washington National Cathedral as the Aeolian-Skinner organ (10,647 pipes) was removed for renovation in January

When New Hope’s Allen Organ started failing, it presented us with an opportunity to work with Walker Technical, not only upgrading to a next-to-real instrument but also obtaining an instrument of adequate size, allowing for 1 More flexibility with the music our ministry offers, 2 More repertoire to be played, and 3 Open up the opportunity to offer recitals to the public as well as host outside groups that would use our instrument. This could range from guest organists coming to give recitals to outside choirs/ensembles utilizing our instrument.

The Bible tells us in Psalm 98:4-9 “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: Make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the LORD with the harp; With the harp, and the voice of psalm. With trumpets and the sound of cornet. Make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.”

We are beyond thrilled to have this custom instrument to use for worship at New Hope and are eternally grateful to God and everyone who has been there to support us along this journey.

God's Plans

I recently read a devotional about anticipation for our weekly staff meeting. The crux of the devotion was on how anticipation is not merely a feeling of "dreaded expectation of what's to come" but rather "preparation for God's plan and purpose " Think about the anticipation that Noah had prior to the rain drops falling! That's very much where we are at this very moment; we are in the preparatory stage for several changes coming to New Hope.

In the sanctuary, we have already completed the preparation in anticipation of one of those coming changes. Speaker chambers were added and enlarged to house the 28 new speakers and electrical wiring was added to power all those speakers. The last step was to hide all of the work and make it as discreet as possible.

The tech ministry will upgrade several behind-the-scenes items to improve the look and sound of our livestream production, in-house monitors, and church WIFI. The temporary booth in the side hall will be moved behind the doors to a permanent home for the livestream mixing. The TVs throughout the church will all be able to show the service. With the growing flow of data over the church's WIFI network, that too is being upgraded In anticipation of this move, Michael has done lots of planning and prep work to make these final installs go seamlessly.

Much preparation is underway in anticipation of the New Hope Columbarium. Legal documents have been submitted to the state, and policy and procedure documents are undergoing final edits. The structure has been selected, and a construction plan is in the works.

Finally, my last anticipation is finding the Lord's pick to fill Rachel Warren's shoes in leading our children's ministry program. We are all so grateful for Rachel's selfless efforts over the last 8+ years in reaching and teaching children of God's love. The search process is also underway for a new Youth Ministry Director and just like Noah's anticipation of new life after the flood, we too, prayerfully anticipate God's plan and purpose for New Hope to be fulfilled.

The Bethel Bible Series

Congratulations to the 2024 Bethel Bible Series Class! On Sunday, May 12, we honored and blessed those who had completed this intensive Bible Study. Over the course of two years, these twenty graduates memorized 240 Biblical concepts, and 40 pictorial descriptions of the Old Testament and New Testament lessons and exceeded expectations on 12 quizzes, 2 midterms, and 2 finals. New Hope has been offering the Bethel Bible Series since 1988. Everyone who completes the class has a deeper understanding of the Bible, their relationship with Jesus Christ, and their calling to be a blessing in this world. Bethel will next be offered at New Hope in the Fall of 2025.

Congrats, Bethel Class of 2024: Tom, Bill, Melinda, Mary Ellen, Sue, Kevin, Bonnie, Jeanne, John, Nancy, Vicki, Barbara, Jim, Dax, Annie, Deborah, Jennifer, Scott, Debbie, Marla, and Saundra

Warrior Project

In February, more than twenty New Hope men participated in the Warrior 40 Challenge. Over six weeks, these men worked out, read, and reflected on God's word and kept a journal of their faith journeys On Saturday mornings, these men gathered together for exercise, prayer, and reflection, culminating in a final gathering of running, pushups, squats, hollow rocks, and breakfast! Feedback on the Warrior project was overwhelmingly positive, with participants saying that they felt improvement in three areas of their lives: living strong, leading strong, and loving strong. The New Hope Men's Ministry hopes to offer another round of the Warrior 40 challenge in late 2024 or early 2025.

Women’s Retreat - 2024

On Saturday, April 6, over 100 women gathered at New Hope to worship, fellowship, pray, and dwell in God’s word together The theme for the retreat this year was “Simply Be ” The retreat planning team was guided by the spirit of simplicity to offer space and time in which everyone gathered could “Be still and know God is God” (Psalm 46:10). It was a joy to be together and witness God at work within the small group gatherings, prayer time, engagement in the story of Hannah (1 Samuel 1), testimony sharing and worship.

Summer Women’s Fellowship

Women, you are invited to a painting party in the Fellowship Pavilion at New Hope on Wednesday, July 24, at 6:00 pm. Shannon Hubbs from Scioto Paint Parties will be with us to guide/teach us all the art of painting. We’ll also have time for a devotion and fellowship. Friends, relatives, and neighbors are welcome to attend. We are asking for a donation of $35 per person to cover the cost of the art supplies. Be sure to sign up at NewHopeWorship.org/adults and let us know you’re coming!

Children's Ministry

It’s very bittersweet to be writing about my time on the Children’s Ministry Team coming to an end I am beyond grateful for 8 years of serving alongside the most amazing Children’s Ministry Teammates, incredible New Hope Church staff members, and dedicated and faithful volunteers. Getting to know the families and children of New Hope has been a true gift and a season of my life that I will forever cherish. I’m so grateful to have been even a small part of the faith journeys of so many amazing children who, in turn, taught me so much. I will continue to pray that these children seek a relationship with Jesus, spend time in His word, and always carry with them the assurance of His love for each of them.

The phrase “it takes a village” comes to mind when I think back over the years. Sunday School, Kids WOW, VBS, Birthday Party for Jesus, Easter Egg Hunt and so many other programs provide incredible opportunities for children to learn more about Jesus and to learn about the great stories of our faith that grow and sustain us. They allow for children to have fun exploring their faith and to fellowship with old and new friends. None of this would be possible without the support of our staff, congregation, volunteers, and families. So, for anything and everything you have ever done or will do for Children’s Ministry at New Hope, thank you for helping to foster a village that encourages children to be disciples of Christ, rooted in God’s word, love, and prayer.

Blessings,

New Hope Preschool & Education Center

Suzie Stalter, newhopepreschool com

New Hope Preschool and Education Center’s 2023-2024 school year finished with several engaging events. We had the pleasure of having Erica Carlson, an author/magician, entertain our students with her engaging style and her live hedgehog at the end of her shows. The pavilion provided a perfect setting for this event to occur.

We celebrated our parents by having a “pastries with parents” gathering with their children. The children made special gifts and cards for their parents and gathered in the fellowship hall for some special baked goods

We finished our year with our third annual end-of-school celebration tradition. Families brought picnic blankets to enjoy hotdogs, chips, and dirt pudding. In addition, we had a petting zoo from Horse N Round, water tables for fun play, and seed planting in small pots the children decorated and took home. It was a beautiful day full of fellowship, gratitude for a wonderful year, and wishes for a safe and restful summer.

A special thank you to the staff and teachers for making this school year another remarkable year! Their hard work and dedication to their students and families make NHPEC an excellent program

In May, we offered an Art camp where students learned about four major artists who made works of art inspired by their style. Next we had Mystery camp, where each day was a surprise of activities and learning. Our third camp, the first week of June, is Down on the Farm, where the students will discover all the work and fun about animals and farm life. We will take a little break and then come back in late July and the first week of August for Summer Fun and Back to School camps. We will be serving over 160 campers this summer!

We are full in many of our classes for the 2024-2025 school year. We have openings in our morning 2-day 3’s class, afternoon 3-day 3’s class, and afternoon 3-day 4’s class. In addition, we have openings in our two-day Kindergarten Enrichment class. Please refer your friends and family to our program. We would be happy to provide a tour to share information and show them our school.
