Dear Friends,

Many in our community are concerned about the policy changes at the Federal level. I want to share potential impact to the Newark Senior Center which relies on a diverse funding stream. There are several programs that rely on funding that originates with the Federal Government.

The Meals on Wheels program receives partial funding through the Older Americans Act (OAA). This funding helps older adults live independently and remain a part of the community. OAA programs include services related to nutrition (Meals on Wheels), health and wellness, and caregiver support (the Caregiver Resource Center at the NSC). The investment made in our programs and services is a tremendous cost savings to individuals, families, and ultimately the state.

The Federal Transportation Authority provides support for our transportation program. Our busses are procured through a grant process. The goal of this funding is to meet the transportation needs of older adults and people with disabilities. The transportation program at the NSC provides an affordable option to help fight the devastating effects of isolation. We currently have 5 busses that serve the Greater Newark Area – all funded through this program.

Both the Meals on Wheels program and our Transportation program support the most vulnerable in our community. If individuals are not able to continue living in the community - with a little help –the next level of care currently costs approximately $7,425 per month for an assisted living facility.

Please don’t mistake this for me asking you for money. Many in our community already give generously to our annual appeal and support our fundraising efforts by giving of their time, talent and treasure. This is a request for you to reach out to our State legislators and Congressional Delegation. Since Delaware is such a small state, they will all recognize the Newark Senior Center. What is important is that they know how much the Newark Senior Center means to so many in our community. If you are a Meals on Wheels recipient or volunteer, you have first-hand knowledge of the benefits of MOW. We all know the devastating effects of isolation. Please share your story or the stories of those you have come to know here at the Center.

We are also concerned about the impact to our members through Medicare and Social Security. Please advocate for these valuable programs that you have paid into your entire working life. These sources of income and support are critical.

I am a great believer in “think globally but act locally”. This is something we can all do to support organizations that truly are a good investment in our community or to simply make a difference in the lives of others.

Newark Senior Center Board of Directors is composed of up to 18 members of our community. Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except July & August) at 5:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest.

NSC TRANSPORTATION

Bus service available Monday - Friday Cost: $4/day

• Participants who would like to use the Newark Senior Center transportation system must register for a ride at least 24 hours in advance.

• Registration is available online at www.newarkseniorcenter.com, by phone at 302-737-2336 or in person at the Reception Desk. Do not leave a voice message for a bus reservation or a cancellation.

• Payment ($4/day) must be made at the time of the reservation. NSC accepts major credit cards, cash or check (in person).

• Cancellations must be made by 2pm the day before your ride in order to receive a credit.

REMINDER FOR NSC BUS RIDERS

In order to receive credit for cancelling a NSC Bus Ride, you must speak with an NSC Staff member before 2pm the day before the ride you wish to cancel. CREDITS WILL NOT BE ISSUED FOR MISSED RIDES OR RIDES CANCELLED AFTER 2PM THE DAY BEFORE. VOICEMAILS DO NOT COUNT.

JEWELRY WORKSHOP: LEARN, MAKE, REPAIR, SHARE WITH DAVID HAUKE

Join David to do jewelry work. Tools, materials, instruction available. While David is not a Jeweler or Gemologist, he will be there and available to help with repairs and offer input on jewelry making. If you are already doing jewelry, bring your own skills to share. MEALS ON WHEELS

Hot, nutritious, midday meals - freshly prepared in the NSC Kitchen and delivered to homebound clients by dedicated volunteers Monday - Friday.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR MEALS ON WHEELS? Individuals are age 60+ and/or physically disabled; they may be homebound, unable to prepare an adequate meal, have a chronic disease or condition, be recovering from an illness or injury, or be very frail & lacking family support.

HOW DO I ARRANGE TO RECEIVE MEALS? For meal delivery in the City of Newark, call NSC at 737-5747. For meal delivery in the Greater Newark area, call City Fare Nutrition Program: 421-3734. General Information about Meals on Wheels can be obtained by calling Meals on Wheels Delaware: (302)656-3257

HOW MUCH DOES MOW COST? Clients make a donation toward the cost of their meals based on their individual financial situation. Meals on Wheels staff work with clients to establish suggested donation levels. Providers then send a monthly statement to client or family members showing how many meals were received and the suggested donation.

WHO CAN REFER A PERSON FOR MEALS ON WHEELS? Anyone can refer someone for Meals on Wheels - Family members, friends, caregivers, churches, doctors, nurses...

TIPS TO HELP PREVENT FALLS.

• Find an exercise or balance class: stability, strength and balance. Fitness Access pass at the NSC is just $30 per month and includes pool, fitness center, and instructed exercise classes.

• Be present and aware of your surroundings.

• Talk to your doctor if you have fallen.

• Review your medications – look at side effects – many may cause dizziness.

• Get vision and hearing checked.

• Keep home safe – remove tripping hazards, well lit, non - skid mats in bathrooms, grab bars.

• Ask your family for help.

• If you feel yourself falling: stay bent, protect your head – tuck your chin, land on the “meat”, don’t brace yourself.

Gary started teaching in Cecil County the fall of 1977. A 7th grade girl had an airplane necklace; her dad was a mechanic at Summit Airport. I learned I could take lessons & learn to fly. I took lessons at Cecil airport from a Norwegian instructor, Han. We were practicing take-offs and landings. Hans told me to do 3 more good ones - I was 800 feet up when I realized I was alone! I was well trained, knew what I HAD to do. I did 3 more good ones, parked the plane, greeted by applause. The 1st solo ritual of cutting out the back of my shirt and singing it was performed. MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERY

We are looking for regular or substitute drivers for several routes in the greater Newark area! Meals are delivered Monday through Friday and can be picked up between 10:30am-11am. Each route takes about 90 minutes of your time. YOU can become a Meals on Wheels volunteer if you have a valid license, insured vehicle, and pass a background check. NSC delivers an average of 200 hot meals each day plus bagged suppers to homebound clients in the greater Newark area. MEETING OF MINDS PROGRAM

VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for individuals to assist in our Meeting of Minds Program. Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 weekday/week from 9:30AM-2:15PM. As a volunteer for Meeting of Minds you can be a cheerleader, companion, and advocate! Volunteer responsibilities include assisting members with activities, creating a relaxing environment, and lunch set-up. RECEPTION DESK

We are seeking upbeat individuals with experience with computers and customer service to work at the NSC Reception Desk! Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one shift every other week. Shifts are weekdays from 9am – Noon or Noon - 3pm. Volunteers are responsible for giving tours of the Center, answering the phones, and using the computer to register people for memberships, activities, and classes. HOME REPAIR PROGRAM

NSC works with Community Services Corporation to assist homeowners who are age 62+ and living in the City of Newark by providing FREE Home Repairs.

Projects could include:

• Installing, repairing or replacing doors, windows, screens, gutters, shingles or other roofing • Outlets and light switches

• Hand & stair railings and grab bars • Minor plumbing repairs: faucets, toilets, hand held shower heads, and raised toilet seats • Building ramps & widening doorways

• Weatherstripping, caulking, air seals and insulation

Eligibility requirements:

City of Newark Resident, age 62+, homeowner, household income not to exceed $40,000, have current homeowners insurance – most retirees are eligible

TRIPS & TRAVEL

• Please sign up for trips as soon as possible and at least 40 days prior to the trip. Payments to the bus company and destinations are due & trips will be cancelled due to lack of registrations.

• You can register for trips in person or by phone, Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 3:00pm

• New trips cannot be registered for until the 1st of the month

• All trips depart from the North Entrance and are rain or shine

• Cancellation Forms are located at the Reception Desk & must be completed for ALL cancelled trips. Refunds will not be given for cancellations unless the seat can be resold. For trips costing less than $15 and ALL JITNEYS, refunds will be issued in the form of credits.

• Phone numbers & emergency contact information are required for all trip participants.

• Individuals requiring assistance – NSC offers a wheel-chair lift for Jitney Jaunts only – please notify Receptionist when you make your reservation. Individuals requiring assistance to meet basic needs must travel with a companion. A reservation must be purchased for the companion to ensure seating.

• Payment in full is due at the time of registration. Phone reservations require credit card payment.

• Please arrive 15 minutes before the published departure time.

JITNEY JAUNTS

• Jitney Jaunts are local trips using the NSC bus & are limited to 16 passengers (12 person minimum). There are no tour guides on these trips.

• When dining as a group, please keep in mind that some establishments will include a gratuity of up to 18%. Every effort is made to provide individual checks, but some restaurants cannot accommodate this request. If this is the case, checks will be provided for tables of 4.

• Jitney Jaunts are for NSC Members only. All Jitneys leave & return to the Center. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Center

We are a group of Senior Center members who like to help other seniors learn about technology. We are not a techie group, just volunteers who enjoy learning new things and helping others learn. We have over 200 members with varying levels of technology experience, many of whom are eager to help others.

WHAT WE DO

We train you on the use of lab resources, including document, photo and slide scanning; converting different types of video to a DVD or digital format. We also help with problems on devices (computer, tablet, camera, smartphone).

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer programs and classes for all levels of experience. Monday afternoon labs for club members offer oneon-one help with a more experienced club member. Thursday afternoon programs offer a variety of speakers on the latest technology. We also offer open lab sessions for Senior Center members on Mondays and Tuesdays.

HOW TO JOIN

You must be a member of the Newark Senior Center to become a member of the Technology Club. Stop by the computer lab when it is open and someone will provide you a brochure listing all the benefits and offer a membership form to complete. After you join, you will be offered classes, free instruction and free advice for your devices. You will also have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. This group is for those who enjoy bringing comfort to others. No experience necessary. 2nd & 4th Thursday of Every Month 9:30am

Bags2Mats consist of volunteers who recycle plastic bags and soft-like material to create mats for the homeless in Delaware. Join us to collect, cut and loop plastics. Volunteers are also needed to crochet and/or weave mats on our 3x6 loom. The plastic mats help to retain body heat while also keeping bedding and other belongings dry and clean.

NSC SPRING SALE

to benefit tbe Newark Senior Center

April 24th, 25th & 26th

Thursday, April 24th • 5:00pm - 7:30pm

Friday, April 25th • 9:00am - 5:00pm 11:30am - 1:oopm lunch

Saturday, April 26th • 9:00am - Noon

8:00am: All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast to benefit BSA Troop 1923

Cost: Adults $10 • Youth (12 & under) $6 • Scouts in uniform FREE Food will be available each day

Used Book Sale: April 28th - May 2nd

Volunteers are needed for many different opportunities during the week of the flea market. We need help with unloading storage containers, setting up booths, pricing, working at the booths during the sale, and cleaning up.
