If my calculations are correct, this is about my 220th monthly letter. I decided to try something new – something very new. I used AI – artificial intelligence. I asked editpad.org for a letter that connected independence day to the independence that seniors might experience. Below is the unedited result! All in all, it is truly amazing! I have enjoyed writing these letters over the years and am always glad to hear that many of you have enjoyed reading them. Progress, perhaps….
Independence Day, celebrated every July 4th, is a time for fireworks, barbecues, and remembering the birth of our nation. It marks the day America declared its freedom and set its own course. As seniors, you've likely experienced many Independence Days. But have you ever thought about how this national holiday mirrors the personal independence you experience in your senior years?
Just like America breaking free from another country, senior independence is about breaking free from certain constraints. These might be the daily grind of a full-time job, the responsibilities of raising children, or even the expectations of others. Retirement can be a declaration of independence, a chance to pursue hobbies, travel, or simply relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Of course, senior independence also comes with its own set of challenges. Maintaining good health becomes paramount. Staying active, eating well, and keeping up with doctor's appointments are crucial for remaining independent. Similarly, financial security is key. Managing your savings and investments wisely allows you to make your own choices without relying solely on others.
Technology plays a vital role in maintaining independence in today's world. In recent years, we've seen incredible advancements that help seniors stay connected and informed. Smartphones and tablets make it easier to video chat with loved ones, access online resources, and even manage healthcare appointments. Smart home devices can automate tasks, improving safety and convenience. Embracing these tools can significantly enhance your ability to live independently.
Just as the Founding Fathers had to work together to build a new nation, seniors can also benefit from strong support networks. Connecting with friends, family, and community organizations can provide emotional support, companionship, and practical assistance when needed. Senior centers, community events, and volunteer opportunities offer chances to socialize and stay engaged.
Independence Day reminds us of the courage and determination it takes to forge your own path. Similarly, embracing senior independence requires planning, resilience, and a willingness to adapt. By taking proactive steps to maintain your health, finances, and social connections, you can celebrate your own personal independence day every day, enjoying the freedom and fulfillment that comes with this stage of life.

“What’s Your Story?”
GARY
Tuesday, July 8th
11:00am
Gary started teaching in Cecil County the fall of 1977. A 7th grade girl had an airplane necklace; her dad was a mechanic at Summit Airport. I learned I could take lessons & learn to fly. I took lessons at Cecil airport from a Norwegian instructor, Han. We were practicing take-offs and landings. Hans told me to do 3 more good ones - I was 800 feet up when I realized I was alone! I was well trained, knew what I HAD to do. I did 3 more good ones, parked the plane, greeted by applause. The 1st solo ritual of cutting out the back of my shirt and singing it was performed. And now I’m looking into working with an instructor to get “current” and be able to fly again.
Please contact Heather if you would like to share your story. 302-737-2336 x127

A Grateful Farewell
The Newark Senior Center would like to take this opportunity to thank Joyce Hayes for her dedicated volunteerism for the past 15 years with Delaware Medicare Assistive Bureau. DMAB plays a crucial role with helping individuals navigate the Medicare system by giving guidance with choosing Medicare plans, assisting with Medicare appeals and general education on what Medicare offers.
In the past 15 years she has worked with over 600 people and has clocked over 750 volunteer hours, including annual training during her tenure as a Medicare Counselor.

Jada's Journal
by Jada Hall, NSC Fitness Center Manager
July brings warm weather, longer days, and a chance to slow down and focus on what helps us feel our best. This time of year, it’s especially important to take care of both our bodies and our minds.
Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and lighter meals can go a long way in keeping our energy up and helping us stay cool.
Staying hydrated is just as important, so keep a water bottle nearby and take small sips throughout the day.
Social connection also plays a big role in our overall health. Sharing a meal, joining a group activity, or simply talking with someone can lift our mood and remind us we’re not alone. If you’re feeling isolated, even a short visit or a few minutes of conversation can make a difference.
Walking, too, is a simple but powerful habit. A short stroll around the building, in the hallway, or outside if the weather allows this can help with circulation, mood, and sleep. There’s no need to rush or push, just moving at your own pace is enough.
This month, let’s focus on the small things that support our well-being.

REASONS TO BELIEVE
Mondays, July 7th - 28th 1:00pm
Presenter: Dr. Gerald Culley
Traditional faith is not in fashion these days. The media are filled with skepticism toward the Bible. We hear that a book compiled many centuries ago must be riddled with myth, legend, folktale, and outright fiction. To think that it’s a reliable source of history is naïve, and to make it the basis of a personal religious faith is pure folly. This is the 21st century: an age of practical politics, personal computing, and social networking! But did you know…A hard look at this ancient book reveals that it is historically accurate, archaeologically supported, and scientifically sound! We will explore these paths in a four-week series! No Cost. Please register at the Reception Desk
PROFILES IN COURAGE IN DELAWARE’S AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY
Wednesday, July 9th 10:00am
Presenter: Syl Wolford
During the early part of the 20th century many challenges faced Delaware’s African American Communities. Access to quality education, elimination of the threat of lynchings, access to political power and allowing women to vote are just a few of them. Many courageous African Americans made sacrifices to remove these obstacles to first class citizenship for African Americans. Alice Dubar Nelson fought to eliminate lynchings, Blanche Stubbs worked to make sure African American women got the right to vote, Reverend/Dr. Wm Jason dedicated twenty-five years to the institution which we now recognize as Delaware State University and Thomas Postle broke the glass ceiling and became the first African American to be elected to office. These courageous African Americans should not be forgotten and should be celebrated. My presentation of July 9, 2025 will bring this courageous individuals back to life and show how we benefit today from the sacrifices which they made. No cost. Register at the Front Desk
