Reception

Dear Friends,

Volunteering is a work of HeART! That is the theme chosen for this year’s volunteer reception. Maura, our Volunteer Coordinator has been working very hard to plan a special event to recognize the amazing contributions of our volunteers. She is also planning to feature some of the beautiful artwork from our art students.

Each month, our volunteers dedicate more than 1,000 hours in service to the NSC. Meals on Wheels and Meeting of Minds volunteers are critical to the success of these two programs providing just under 800 hours of service each month. The front desk volunteers are the face of the NSC to all of our members. They do an amazing job pleasantly greeting our guests and responding to requests, registering for programs and memberships and providing valuable information about programs, services, and resources.

Our special event volunteers are truly incredible! We just completed a record setting flea market and book sale with dozens of volunteers giving hours of time and effort to sort, organize, setup, sell and clean up an unbelievable amount of merchandise donated by our community. It was so good to see so many new volunteers and of course our dedicated veterans. Some of our volunteers have been participating in this event for 20 years!

Our volunteer facilitators, group leaders and instructors make the NSC a model center. We know the value of the years of experience of our members. We are also very grateful that they are willing to share their time to enhance the lives of others.

The NSC has always been privileged to benefit from the guidance of our Board of Directors. The current Board is probably one of the most active that we have ever had. More of our Board members see the day to day operations of the Center and gain a better understanding of the importance of the NSC in the lives of our members.

If you are one of our treasured volunteers with so much heart – please consider joining us on June 10th from 4:00 – 6:00 for our Volunteer Appreciation Happy Hour! Please see page 7 for details. Thank you!

The Center is now OPEN Monday & Thursday till 7pm with access to the Library, Billiards Room & Patio 1

The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.

COMMUNITY NEWS

“What’s Your Story?” JOYCE

Tuesday, June 10th

11:00am

Joyce will talk about her 15 years of experience as a volunteer for the Delaware Medicare Assistance Bureau — what the duties entailed and the benefits she enjoyed. According to Joyce, “If you find helping others to be rewarding, this is opportunity to do so. And also the opportunity to meet all kinds of interesting people.”

GARY

Tuesday, July 8th

11:00am

Gary started teaching in Cecil County the fall of 1977. A 7th grade girl had an airplane necklace; her dad was a mechanic at Summit Airport. I learned I could take lessons & learn to fly. I took lessons at Cecil airport from a Norwegian instructor, Han. We were practicing take-offs and landings. Hans told me to do 3 more good ones - I was 800 feet up when I realized I was alone! I was well trained, knew what I HAD to do. I did 3 more good ones, parked the plane, greeted by applause. The 1st solo ritual of cutting out the back of my shirt and singing it was performed. And now I’m looking into working with an instructor to get “current” and be able to fly again.

Please contact Heather if you would like to share your story. 302-737-2336 x127

Jada's Journal

This month is a great time to show support for the men in our lives and remind each other that mental health matters.

Sometimes, all it takes is a small gesture to brighten someone’s day. A friendly conversation, a walk with a neighbor, or just checking in can go a long way. If you know a man who seems quieter than usual or a little down, don’t be afraid to ask how he’s doing. You don’t need to have all the answers—just listening can make a big difference. Encourage him to talk, take time for himself, or join an activity that brings joy. Sometimes, older men are used to handling things alone, but we all need support now and then.

If you’re struggling yourself, remember it’s okay to open up and talk to someone you trust. Let’s use June to remind each other to slow down, connect, and care.

A little kindness and understanding can go a long way—for others and for ourselves.

REASONS TO BELIEVE

Mondays, July 7th - 28th

Presenter: Dr. Gerald Culley

1:00pm

Traditional faith is not in fashion these days. The media are filled with skepticism toward the Bible. We hear that a book compiled many centuries ago must be riddled with myth, legend, folktale, and outright fiction. To think that it’s a reliable source of history is naïve, and to make it the basis of a personal religious faith is pure folly. This is the 21st century: an age of practical politics, personal computing, and social networking! But did you know…A hard look at this ancient book reveals that it is historically accurate, archaeologically supported, and scientifically sound! We will explore these paths in a four-week series! No Cost. Please register at the Reception Desk

PROFILES IN COURAGE IN DELAWARE’S AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY

Wednesday, July 9th 10:00am

Presenter: Syl Wolford

During the early part of the 20th century many challenges faced Delaware’s African American Communities. Access to quality education, elimination of the threat of lynchings, access to political power and allowing women to voter are just a few of them. Many courageous African Americans made sacrifices to remove these obstacles to first class citizenship for African Americans. Alice Dubar Nelson fought to eliminate lynchings, Blanche Stubbs worked to make sure African American women got the right to vote, Reverend/Dr. Wm Jason dedicated twenty-five years to the institution which we now recognize as Delaware State University and Thomas Postle broke the glass ceiling and became the first African American to be elected to office. These courageous African Americans should not be forgotten and should be celebrated. My presentation of July 9, 2025 will bring this courageous individuals back to life and show how we benefit today from the sacrifices which they made. No cost. Register at the Front Desk

Record Breaking April Flea Market: $50,000!

By now you may have heard that our April Flea Market & Book Sale was our largest ever, grossing $50,000. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to help us break previous records. When the total was posted in the lobby, many asked what we were going to do with "all that money?" - a fair question!

The Center's fiscal year is July 1 - June 30th. We do include fundraisers in the budget and sometimes these fundraisers exceed our budget. There are also times when our expenses exceed our budget. This is one of the reasons NSC has worked so hard to cutivate diverse streams of funding.

To give you perspective, in order to keep NSC safe and accessible for our members, we spend:

• $6,700/month on cleaning the facility

• $2,000/month on paper products like toilet paper, paper towels etc

• $16,600 on snow removal

• $1,000/month to have the lawn mowed

• $4,400/month to insure our building & property

PAUSE. VERIFY. HELP PREVENT SCAMS (aarp.org)

1. Pause. Don't let anyone rush you into a decision, especially if it involves money or sharing personal information or codes. Take time to evaluate any requests especially if asked to pay in less common ways.

2. Verify. Confirm who the person really is. Does the story or request make sense? Contact the supposed family member, organization or bank using a phone number you trust, such as a number from a statement or the back of your card. You can't always trust numbers found online.

3. Help prevent scams. Know what to look for. Keep up with scammers' latest tactics and talk to friends and family about scams so they can help protect themselves.

4. Don’t be afraid to talk to friends, neighbors, family or NSC staff. If something makes you uncomfortable – there is probably reason for concern.
