Dear Friends,
Each year I selfishly write a piece about getting organized, getting rid of unused or unneeded items to donate to the Newark Senior Center flea market. The April and October sales are one of our best fundraisers. Each year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our community as they are excited to support this fundraiser through donations, volunteering and yes – shopping!
After a little research, there are studies that support what I experience first-hand. According to the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, people who described their homes as cluttered or full of unfinished projects were more depressed, fatigued, and had a higher level of stress hormones than those who felt their homes were restful and restorative. When you are in a place that is filled with clutter, it can be overwhelming. Some people find it difficult to take the first step to begin the process. One of my favorite quotes is “the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”, Lao Tzu.
Some things are easier to do with a friend or family member. Although thinking about tackling the whole house may be unimaginable, consider starting with a drawer, a closet, even that storage area that you have not looked in for years. Marie Kondo, a professional organizer embraces the concept of keeping only those things that bring you joy. Please consider supporting the April Flea market by clearing the clutter and making room for new treasures that actually may bring you joy.
The Flea Markets also provide wonderful volunteer opportunities. Even if you only have a few hours we are certain to need your help. Please see page 47 for more information about this wonderful event.

As temperatures rise and the days grow longer, outdoor activities like walking and jogging are great for both physical and mental health, but a few precautions can help you make the most of them.
• Warmer weather increases the risk of dehydration, so drink plenty of water before, during, and after your walk to avoid fatigue or dizziness.
• Dress in light, breathable layers to adjust to changing temperatures, and wear bright or reflective clothing if walking in the early morning or evening.
• Protect your skin from UV rays by applying sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, and using a hat for extra shade.
• Choose safe walking routes by sticking to well-lit paths and sidewalks, avoiding busy roads, and letting someone know your route if walking in a secluded area.
• Listen to your body, taking breaks and hydrating if you feel dizzy, fatigued, or short of breath, and don’t push yourself too hard, especially if you’re not used to outdoor exercise.
Walking outside can boost your mood, improve cardiovascular health, and provide a mental reset, so take advantage of the fresh air and beautiful weather while keeping safety in mind. By making small adjustments, you can enjoy all the beneits of outdoor activity while staying healthy and protected this season.

Yoga is one of the best ways to keep yourself feeling lively and healthy as you age! Slow and gentle yoga with a holistic approach that focuses on strength, balance, flexibility, bringing mobility to the joints and breath control. Poses, when practiced regularly, will contribute to improvement of physical strength, mental clarity and the cognitive connection to both. We will be doing standing poses and poses on the floor. Remember to bring your mat.
