Pilates builds a strong core, simultaneously increases strength and flexibility, and improves posture, stability, and alignment. It also emphasizes complete concentration on smooth movement and proper breathing. You become acutely aware of how your body feels, where it is in space, and how best to control its movement. Many describe this feeling as being more “connected” to your body. Joseph Pilates called his method “Contrology” because of the benefits of balancing the body, mind, and spirit.
Pilates applied to sports can be loosely divided into three categories: twisting sports, endurance sports, and stability sports.
Twisting sports require athletes to simultaneously move both the upper and lower body, often in opposing directions. Mobility in the spine and hips, strong abs, and deep conditioning of pelvic muscles help with the torquing used in these sports. Pilates exercises help the upper back and shoulder girdle to be evenly conditioned and taken through a full range of motion. Control of the transverse abdominus (lower abs) and deeper pelvic muscles can help avoid a sports hernia, which can develop through repeated torquing in the pelvis. In addition to golf and tennis, other twisting sports include skiing, soccer, football, hockey, and baseball.
Endurance sports are usually linear in nature, with athletes in repetitive motion in one direction with little lateral movement. Examples include swimming, running, hiking, and cycling. Pilates helps to develop fluid movement and the mind-body connection, training muscles to fire correctly in sync with each other. Working against spring resistance in Pilates enables the body to keep continual muscle engagement, enhancing the athlete’s ability to hold certain positions with proper alignment and without discomfort. Deep ribcage breathing in Pilates increases oxygenation and stamina, and the diaphragm can expand fully. Adding Pilates to their repertoire can help endurance athletes restore muscle balance in the arms and legs and move more efficiently.
Stability sports require the body to hold a stable position while making precise movements around a strong center. These sports include weightlifting, surfing, equestrian, and martial arts. The core training provided by a Pilates practice can enable the athlete to hold proper form while moving freely through their extremities. The breath control and flowing movement in Pilates help the athlete to focus as they prepare to make dynamic movements from their anchored core.
There are many overlaps between these three categories of sport, but the overall balance and benefits of a Pilates program will enhance any sport
you choose. There are many testimonials online of athletes who have used Pilates to recover from injury, improve function, and stay strong while avoiding overtraining. You may have heard about elite athletes using Pilates to improve their performance, but weekend warriors and gym rats can also benefit. Consider adding Pilates to your regimen and level up your game!

The Castillo family, led by Alvaro Castillo, has recently made Stafford their home, bringing with them a strong sense of community and a deep commitment to family. Alvaro, 45, is the proud father of three children: Sarah, 17, Callen, 14, and Oliver (Ollie), 13. Alvaro’s mother, Mia Donado, 64, will soon join them from Ecuador.
Alvaro’s journey to Stafford is a testament to his dedication to his children. After his ex-wife’s new husband got a job in the area, the proposed change in joint custody prompted Alvaro to make a life-changing decision. He left his high-paying job in federal government contracting to maintain his 50/50 custody arrangement.
“I moved without hesitation,” Alvaro shared, reflecting on his decision to prioritize being a present and fully involved parent. After renting for a year, he decided to plant roots in Stafford by purchasing a home, ensuring stability for his family.
Sarah, the eldest, is an ambitious and active teenager. She works the front desk at Pixie’s Pole Gym, a business owned by Alvaro, and has her sights set

on becoming a pilot in the Air Force. Sarah also wrestles and plays lacrosse, balancing her rigorous training and academic responsibilities.
Callen and Ollie, just a year apart in age, are inseparable. They attend Mountain View High School and AG Wright Middle School, respectively, and enjoy spending their weekends engaging in various activities with their father. From building intricate Lego sets to off-roading adventures and watching culturally significant movies, the trio finds joy in each other’s company.
Alvaro’s mother, Mia, will soon join the family, adding another layer of warmth and support to their household. Her upcoming move from Ecuador to Stafford is a significant transition, and the family is preparing to welcome her and introduce her to everything they love about the area.
The family’s cat, Lyra, is also an essential part of their home, adding a touch of playfulness and comfort.
Stafford has quickly become a place of enjoyment and exploration for the Castillo family. Alvaro loves the area’s natural beauty, particularly Government Island, where he and his children take long hikes.
“I love boating in the area,” Alvaro explained, adding that Aquia Landing Park also offers fishing, swimming, and birdwatching.
Along with the birds, the Castillo family appreciates the local dining options. They often frequent spots like Juicy Bucket for its delicious seafood, Hibachi for its sizzling Japanese dishes, and Oni Sushi for its fresh and flavorful sushi.
“We also enjoy time at local attractions like Stafford Civil War Park and Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve,” Alvaro added. The Castillos certainly stay active, and activity and inclusion are the focus of Alvaro’s business as well.
Pixie’s Pole Gym is more than just a fitness center; it’s a community hub. Alvaro, along with his business partner, Tabatha Ley, whom he met through their shared love of dance, aims to build a welcoming environment where people can explore alternative fitness programs.
“Neighbors and community play a vital role in enhancing our quality of life,” Alvaro said, emphasizing the importance of fostering connections. “Being part of a strong community means having people who can offer help in times of need, share in celebrations, and contribute to a safe and nurturing environment.”
Alvaro hopes to encourage more people to experience the supportive and inclusive community they have created through regular open houses and events at the gym and by reaching out to neighbors.
While they love their neighborhood and new life in Stafford, the Castillo family also enjoys vacations whenever possible. Vacation time often means visiting relatives in Miami and Colombia, with the occasional trip wherever affordable flights are available. These trips allow the family to reconnect with loved ones and immerse themselves in different cultures, strengthening their family bonds.
The Castillo family’s story is about love, sacrifice, and community. Alvaro’s unwavering commitment to his children and his efforts to build a supportive environment at Pixie’s Pole Gym reflect the values that guide this close-knit family. As they continue to settle into Stafford, the Castillo family is not just building a home but also contributing to the community that surrounds them.
White Plumbing Company, LLC is a family-owned business that provides plumbing, gas, and backflow services. They also offer service agreements for all the plumbing needs in a home, paired with friendly service that has earned them a loyal customer base.
Owner Gregory White’s journey into plumbing began early, deeply rooted in family traditions. “My uncle owned a plumbing company when I was growing up, and I can remember spending my days off from school and summers in the trucks with my cousins and father,” he recalled. This immersive exposure to the trade made plumbing a natural career choice. “Most of the men in my family were plumbers,” he said, highlighting the generational knowledge and skills passed down to him.
White Plumbing Company LLC operates on a philosophy that puts the customer first. “Seventy-five percent of our job is customer service, and twenty-five percent is plumbing and service,” White explained. This perspective shapes every interaction and service call. “Dealing with the public, they have to trust you and believe that you are giving a fair price for quality service,” he added. Building trust through honesty and quality work is at the core of their operations, ensuring customers feel confident and satisfied with the services provided.
White finds his biggest inspiration in the satisfaction of his customers. “When the customer is happy with the services rendered, that is what I enjoy most about what I do,” he says. It’s not just about fixing pipes; it’s about solving problems that others couldn’t. “Especially when they tell me other plumbers have been to their home and could not figure out the issue,” he shared. This sense of accomplishment and the positive feedback from clients fuel his passion for the job.
White is also actively involved in his community outside of his professional life. “I attend Grace Church, where I am an usher and part of the security and hospitality ministry,” he said. His commitment to serving others extends beyond plumbing, reflecting his dedication to his community. He enjoys various hobbies: bowling, fishing, boating, and tennis.
“I often play tennis at any open court but have not tried pickleball,” he noted. Recently, he accepted the position of Community Service Coordinator for his motorcycle club, combining his love for motorcycles with his passion for community service. “I like to stay active and live life to the fullest-Carpe Diem,” he emphasized, encapsulating his approach to life and work.
White also appreciates the humor in some of the more challenging jobs. He recalls an incident involving a tool known as a honey dipper.
“When you have to bring this tool out, there is nothing sweet about it,” he laughed, recalling one of his son’s first experiences on a call with him.
“Just thinking of it, I am smiling. I cannot portray what I am thinking in words. You would have had to be there,” White reminisced. These moments of shared laughter and learning highlight the family-oriented and fun-loving spirit of the business.
Gregory White offers a straightforward yet powerful message to the community: “If you want it right, call White.” This motto encapsulates the essence of White Plumbing Company LLC—dedicated, trustworthy, and committed to excellence.
White Plumbing Company LLC stands out for its technical expertise and unwavering commitment to customer service and community involvement. The blend of family tradition, customer-centric philosophy, and active community engagement makes it more than just a plumbing service; it is a valued partner in the community. With every service call, they strive to uphold the legacy of quality and trust built over generations, ensuring that the community knows they can rely on White Plumbing Company LLC when it comes to plumbing, gas, and backflow services.

Home improvement begins in the mind. It is the culmination of hopes and dreams. Home improvement anticipates change that will bring happiness, value, and identity. What is the blueprint for choosing the companies to dream with you and make those dreams come true? Like a floor plan on a blueprint, a company’s core values help lay out key components. Core values identify which attributes a family, institution, or business possesses. Choosing companies for your home improvement investment that align with your core values is essential. You will see these ideals carried out in the craft, communication, and customer service you receive during your project. At NK Floors, we hold these core values to the highest standard. Let me explain why we believe they are crucial to our customers and homeowners by listing our core values as a flooring company and applying them to home improvement.
NK Floors is committed to offering quality in the flooring products and services we provide. Our company partners with leading flooring manufacturers to offer our customers top-quality products. For a home improvement, quality matters if you are looking for window replacement, fresh interior paint with accent walls, a kitchen renovation, or an upgrade to your lighting. What is the quality of the products you are purchasing and having installed? If you are hiring a company to do the home improvement, are they certified and trained in their expertise? Trades must take ownership of their knowledge and craftsmanship. Our company offers installer certifications and classes. What about the companies you will hire? Are they top-quality? Home improvements can add value to your home, so choose carefully.
NK Floors team members are expected to be honest and dependable. Our team strives to have a reputation where our actions match our words. Our goal is to do it right the first time. When considering different companies for home improvement, check their reputability and reviews. Get referrals. No company is perfect, but the consensus should be that they are honest and dependable, and most people are satisfied with their prices, products, and results.
NK Floors team members are expected to put their best effort into every aspect of their work. Superior skills, effective procedures, and continuous improvement are foundational to our company. There is a process for each project in your home. Adequate procedures in construction and renovation ensure a lasting home improvement. The plan for the home upgrade should accompany
momentum from start to finish. Following through on the job allows the project to be completed promptly, tidily, and organized.
4. Effective Communication
NK Floors strives to be direct and timely in communicating with customers and is mindful of concerns. Our goal is to understand and carry out the needs of our clients. You will conduct several vital conversations before any contractor or interior designer enters your home. Are they listening to your ideas while imparting their knowledge, or are they just pushing to make a sale? Are they listening to concerns about products and installation? Customer satisfaction and communication must be prioritized before, during, and after the home renovation.
NK Floor team members strive to interact with positive attitudes and respectful demeanors. Any home improvement project can be stressful. When communicating with the business entrusted to beautify your castle, they must remain respectful and act on the customer’s behalf. Be sure to communicate suitable times to be in the home and how to maneuver around pets and other family members during the project.
NK Floors is prepared to adapt and make changes when necessary. We are ready to innovate and excel to increase our efficiency and productivity. Life happens, and our team is prepared to accommodate you when it does. Variables in home improvement include schedules, weather, finances, permits, product availability, colors, design choices, etc.… When obstacles arise, qualified companies will think critically to find a solution. Be sure your team of experienced home improvement companies can tailor to all that may come your way during your renovation.
NK Floors adheres to these core values to offer our customers next-level, precision flooring. Floors for every walk of life can only be laid when we follow these ideals in quality, integrity, superior work ethic, effective communication, respect, and flexibility. Clarify your core values for your next home renovation and use them as a blueprint to find the products and companies you seek to help you create your dream home.
Parents and Teachers, what an incredible role we have! As we emerge into the 2024-2025 school year, may we focus on one of life’s most important callings: mentoring the youth in our paths. Our mission field is the youth in our community, on our school campuses, and around our dinner tables. There is no greater way to impact our future. Here are some tangible ways to mentor:
Share knowledge and experiences. Everyone is a teacher. We all have truths from life, trade, education, and trials to impart. However, mentoring is more than just sharing what we know; it is about inspiring change. It uses what we have and allows others to use it as a springboard to go further.
Model what is expected of others.
A good mentor will always display the character, patterns, and behavior of what is expected in those they lead. A mentor is not perfect, but even in failures, good mentors display how to recover, correct, and try again. Good mentors are servant leaders. They display the ability to both follow and lead. Youth flourish when they serve or participate alongside someone they admire, whether a coach, teacher, parent, or older sibling. The mentor’s goal is always to be a better example to those who follow.

Verbalize that you care and show it. One of the most valuable gifts we can give another is encouragement. Former President Theodore Roosevelt stated, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Love and genuine care are the optimal climate for growth. Praise improvements, not perfection. Express your desire for growth and what is best for your mentees. Speaking truth into the lives of youth and mentioning strengths will lift any weary soul. Our young people are in dire need of this today.
Give your time.
Nothing says that you care more than T.I.M.E. Time is one of life’s most valuable and limited resources. It demands prioritization and careful thought of its investment. Our youth probably need our time more than anything else. They need time for us to listen, not just to their words but to their hearts. Giving this precious gift shows love and respect.
Launch into this school year as a mentor, giving our youth hope and significance. Share your knowledge, good example, time, and encouragement. Our future depends on it!

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a timely reminder to learn how to recognize pain in our pets. Dogs and cats can’t tell us when they’re in pain, and their natural instinct to hide discomfort makes it even harder to detect. As pet parents, it’s up to us to notice the subtle clues they give us so we can get them help quickly.
Pain can arise from surgeries, dental disease, ear and skin infections, trauma, osteoarthritis, and even emotional stress. It generally comes in two forms: acute and chronic. Acute pain is sudden and often easier to spot, while chronic pain develops over time and is frequently mistaken for aging or “slowing down.” Therefore, it’s crucial to watch for subtle signs that may indicate your pet is in pain.
One of the first indicators of pain is a change in behavior. Has your playful dog become less active, or is your usually social cat hiding more? These shifts could signal that something isn’t right. Painful dogs and cats may withdraw, lose interest in play, or show signs of anxiety or aggression.
Pain can also alter your pet’s daily habits. A dog that eagerly eats might avoid going downstairs to the food bowl, or a cat might start avoiding the litter box. Sleep patterns can change, too—your pet might sleep more than usual or struggle to get comfortable at night.
For more tips and tools to spot pain, check out the following resources:
• The Feline Grimace Scale: felinegrimacescale.com
• Zoetis Petcare’s OA Checklist: zoetispetcare.com/checklist/osteoarthritis-checklist
• The Feline Musculoskeletal Pain Index (FMPI): painfreecats.org
• International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM): ivapm.org/caregiver-resources
Physical symptoms are another clue. Is your dog limping or struggling to rise after resting? Has your cat stopped jumping onto their favorite perch? Stiffness, difficulty posturing to use the bathroom, or a hunched back can all point to pain. Even facial expressions can change in cats—flattened ears, squinted eyes, or odd whisker positioning might indicate discomfort. The Feline Grimace Scale app can help you spot these signs.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of chronic pain in pets, affecting even younger animals. This progressive joint disease causes inflammation and pain, making movement difficult. Early detection is key to managing OA, and tools like Zoetis Petcare’s OA Checklist for dogs and The Feline Musculoskeletal Pain Index for cats can help you recognize signs of this condition.
If you think your pet might be in pain, don’t wait—reach out to your vet! A thorough exam and imaging can pinpoint the cause. Early recognition allows you and your vet to create a treatment plan, whether through medication, acupuncture, physical therapy, or dietary changes. Addressing pain early can prevent it from becoming a chronic, debilitating issue.
Your pet is counting on you to notice the signs of pain and get them the help they need!
Whether you’re new to North Stafford, an incoming freshman, or just looking to try something new this year, there are plenty of exciting clubs and sports teams to explore. Joining a club or sport is a fantastic way to establish a community, especially if you’re new and want to make friends. Clubs introduce you to new people, broaden your social circle, and help you pursue your passions. Additionally, extracurricular activities are a great way to enhance your college applications, especially for rising juniors and seniors.
One of the newer clubs is the National Music Honor Society.
“We believe the National Music Honor Society is an amazing society for those who are passionate about music and actively contribute to North’s music department,” said Miyah Azrielle Samuel. This society provides an excellent environment for those who want to pursue music as a career or a hobby. Miyah noted, “We provide opportunities to practice performance skills through community service events, benefiting our members and those we serve.”
For students interested in volunteering, the National Music Honor Society offers a chance to give back to the community. “Not only do we strive to achieve partnership within the different music departments, but we spread our love for music throughout various communities,” Miyah added.
At North Nation, some clubs cater to specific cultures, ethnicities, and religions. For example, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Muslim Student Association help members build relationships with God while hosting fun events throughout the year. The African Students Association and Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (the Hispanic Student Association) provide spaces for students to connect with others with similar backgrounds.
“I would say ASA is a good club to join because it unites all the Africans at North and brings together a community that allows everyone to be themselves authentically,” said Daylin Amoako.
Orange Fever, another popular club, focuses on school spirit. Members get discounted prices at football games
and must participate in spirit activities like High Five Friday and wearing school colors at games. These clubs will welcome and support you with open arms, making your high school experience great. Being involved in these clubs is also a valuable way to demonstrate to colleges that you can work with a team and engage in your community. We at North Nation are excited to see your involvement in these clubs!
Some seniors have found passion and community in their sports and have learned important life lessons. These lessons include decision-making, teamwork, and listening skills.
Amouni Janay, a rising senior and cheer team member, described her experience as one of learning new skills and creating strong bonds.
“The cheer team is filled with people who always have your back, like a second family. It’s such a fun experience, especially if you join with no knowledge of it because you get to learn so many new skills and create new bonds with people who support you,” Amouni said. She also mentioned, “The coaches also make the experience great because they easily recognize and execute that their job is to help you and the team grow as a whole.”
J’Maia Joseph, another rising senior who plays on the girls’ basketball team, believes basketball has helped prepare her for the real world by teaching her valuable life lessons. “Basketball is not only a sport but fosters skills that immediately translate to the real world. You have to make tough decisions in short periods that could have major effects in the game, and the same goes for the real world,” J’Maia shared.
She also reflected on the personal growth she experienced through basketball: “I had a great time playing basketball for North Stafford. It taught me so much, but most importantly, it increased my mental toughness. I faced a lot of adversity playing basketball, but I have learned to overcome and adapt.”
Clubs and sports at North Stafford High School offer incredible opportunities to grow, connect, and learn valuable life skills. We look forward to seeing how you get involved and maximize your time here at North Nation!
Getting accepted to The George Mason Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC) was a surprising experience. I applied after being nominated by my journalism teacher, unsure of the details but knowing that anything to do with writing intrigued me enough to give it a shot.
After looking into it more, I found out that WJMC was a week-long conference hosted by George Mason University geared towards rising high school juniors and seniors, specifically those with an interest in journalism and media.
My acceptance letter arrived in December and seven months later I was packing my bags, excited to make the hour drive to the GMU campus. My journey was much shorter than most, people had come from all around the country, some even traveling from places like France and Puerto Rico.
Once I arrived, I made my way to my dorm and waited for my roommate to arrive, the sign on my door indicating she was from Detroit. After we met, I made my way to “The Hub”, a congregating place where we met our color groups, the people we would be spending most of our trip with. I was with the lime group, and amongst them I met amazing people and made friends scattered across America.
That night we had our first dinner and listened to our first speaker, Alexis Johnson, an Emmy-winning correspondent based in Washington D.C.
Day two brought on an array of lessons, where we walked through simulations, teaching us how to do research and conduct persuasive arguments. We also learned about the importance of freedom of press, and where the boundaries lie. After that we got the chance to tour Planet Word and listen to speaker Doni Holloway, an award-winning multimedia journalist and WJMC alumni. He gave a heartwarming speech about how drawbacks don’t mean the end and the beauty of a full circle moment. Then we toured some iconic sights of D.C, like the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The following day, bright and early, we heard from speaker Andrias White Murdaugh, an award winning event producer and broadcast journalist. Her biggest piece of advice was “raise your hand, say yes, and give it a try.”
Kevin McCarthy, a film critic and entertainment reporter, also shared similar advice of, “just say yes”, and shared an iconic story of dancing on the news in a cheerleading outfit as an intern, just for the opportunity to be on the broadcast.
Then came the walk to the National Press Club, where we heard from speakers Nicholas Johnston, publisher of Axios, and Susan Goldberg, President and CEO of GBH. Both gave great advice, especially Nicholas Johnston who told of how work ethic will get you further in the journalism business than anything else.
Day four came quickly, the trip was almost over and yet we still had so much left to experience. Starting off with speaker, Anna Rose Layden, a young political photojournalist with a hefty portfolio, filled with intriguing photos of recent important moments in American politics.
Afterwards we got some much needed and extremely helpful advice from Dr. Alan Byrd, the dean of admissions at GMU.
From all the listening and advice we had been given, we then got the chance to put it all into practice when we got into our color groups and did story pitches, acting as writers for Axios. It taught us the importance of selling yourself and your story, and how to master brevity writing.
The final day was dedicated to exploring D.C.. Personally, I was able to go to the National Gallery of Art, the Natural History Museum, and the DC Botanical Gardens, all of which gave me a fonder appreciation for our capital city.
The next day, when all our goodbyes were said, I was able to exit WJMC knowing I had made friends and connections in states all across America, and that I was never going to forget the newfound skills I had mastered.
Loisann’s Hope House, located in the heart of Fredericksburg, Virginia, stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and community support for families experiencing homelessness.
Founded in 1987 by a group of concerned citizens, the organization has grown from its humble beginnings to become the region’s largest family homeless shelter, helping countless families regain stability and self-sufficiency over the years.
At the heart of Loisann’s Hope House is a deep commitment to transforming lives.
“Hope House has taken a lead role in the community providing vital support to children and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless,” explained board member Keith Lebor. “While our primary focus is on families needing immediate assistance, our Homeless Helpline often serves as the first point of contact for anyone in need.” Through the helpline, Loisann’s Hope House is able to guide most callers to the appropriate resources for their specific situations, ensuring they have access to services in the region.
“For those who fall within our core mission,” Lebor continued, “we offer direct support, including immediate intervention to prevent homelessness and providing temporary crisis housing and life skills training.”
The organization’s mission is to quickly move children and their families from homelessness to housing by providing a comprehensive range of services designed to address the root causes of homelessness. This mission is underpinned by a belief in the dignity of every individual and a dedication to providing a hand-up, not just a handout.
“Our mission is to break the cycle of homelessness, one family at a time,” said Lebor, who has been an active board member for almost three years and has donated to the organization personally for over six years and through his business, Olde Towne Butcher, for over a decade.
“After learning of the amazing work Hope House was doing for the community, I dug in a little further and was amazed at how successful it is,” he explained. “For example, families exiting the program have a 94% success rate in maintaining their own housing after two years.”
“Being charitable is important,” Lebor emphasized, “but knowing your contributions are having such an incredible impact really lets you know it is worthwhile.”
Over the years, Loisann’s Hope House has developed a holistic approach to addressing homelessness, understanding that securing housing is just one part of the equation. The organization offers a variety of supportive services, including case management, financial literacy education, job training, and mental health support. These services are tailored to meet the unique needs of each family, helping them to build the skills and resources they need to maintain stable housing and achieve long-term independence.
The organization maintains its commitment to its guiding principles: everyone deserves hope; relentless commitment to family; tough love without judgment; education for independence; and accountability with care. Community involvement is integral to the success of Loisann’s Hope House. The organization thrives on the generosity and support of local businesses, faith groups, and individual volunteers who contribute their time, resources, and expertise to help families in need. This strong network of community partners enables Loisann’s Hope House to offer a wide range of services and to extend its impact far beyond what would be possible on its own.
“My passion in contributing to Hope House is derived directly from life experiences,” explained Lebor. “I believe everyone has experienced, or knows someone who has experienced, difficulty at some point in their lives. Whether those difficulties are due to bad decision making or uncontrollable circumstances, often just a leg up is all that is needed to get them back on a productive path. Providing that little bit of help offers families the confidence and, eventually, the self-esteem needed to provide for their families.”
In addition to providing direct services to families, Loisann’s Hope House is also an advocate for systemic change. The organization works to raise awareness about the issue of family homelessness and to advocate for policies that promote affordable housing and economic opportunity. Through these efforts, Loisann’s Hope House seeks not only to address the immediate needs of homeless families but also to contribute to long-term solutions that prevent homelessness from occurring in the first place.
The impact of Loisann’s Hope House is evident in the stories of the families it serves. Many families who come to the shelter are able to rebuild their lives, secure stable housing, and move forward with hope and confidence.
Four high school graduates are moving forward with hope and confidence onto college campuses this fall.
“One student is set to attend her dream school, the HBCU Virginia State University, with aspirations to study psychology,” Lebor explained. “Another plans to pursue biomedical engineering at Germanna Community College, aspiring to specialize in prosthetics. A third student aims to enter the field of criminal justice, also at Germanna. Lastly, a young woman will attend Radford University on a full scholarship, pursuing a degree in Education with dreams of becoming a teacher.”
The organization’s success is measured not just in the number of families housed but in the lasting change it creates in the lives of those it serves. Nevertheless, the numbers are still impressive. Ready to dive into the bubbly world of kombucha brewing? It's easier than you think, and the results are refreshingly delicious. Let’s get poppin’!
WHAT’S KOMBUCHA ANYWAY?
Kombucha is a tangy, effervescent fermented tea that’s been around for over 2,000 years. This ancient elixir is packed with probiotics, antioxidants, and a delightful zing that’ll have your taste buds dancing. Plus, it’s super customizable, so you can craft a brew that’s uniquely yours.
Step 1: Gather Your Gear
1. TEA (BLACK OR GREEN): The base of our brew.
2. SUGAR: Food for the fermentation magic.
3. SCOBY (SYMBIOTIC CULTURE OF BACTERIA AND YEAST): The star of the show.
4. STARTER TEA: Pre-made kombucha to kickstart fermentation.
5. A BIG GLASS JAR: Our fermentation station.
6. A CLOTH AND RUBBER BAND: Cover the jar and let it breathe.
7. BOTTLES WITH TIGHT-SEALING LIDS: For the second fermentation and fizz.
Step 2: Brew the Tea
Boil 4 cups of water, then add 4-5 bags of black or green tea. Steep for 5-10 minutes, then remove the tea bags. Stir in 1 cup of sugar until it dissolves. Now, let it cool to room temperature — nobody wants to scald their SCOBY!
Step 3: The SCOBY Show
Pour your cooled tea into the glass jar, then add 4 cups of water. Gently place your SCOBY into the tea. It might float, sink, or do a little dance — all perfectly normal! Add 1 cup of starter tea, cover the jar with the cloth, and secure it with the rubber band. Now, let it sit in a warm, dark spot for 7-14 days. This is where the magic happens!
Step 4: Taste Test Time
After about a week, start tasting your kombucha daily. When it’s just the right balance of sweet and tangy, it’s time to bottle up! Remove the SCOBY and 1 cup of kombucha to use as your starter tea for the next batch.
Step 5: Get Fizzy with It
Pour your kombucha into bottles, leaving a bit of room at the top. Add fruit, herbs, or spices to flavor your brew — the sky’s the limit! Seal the bottles tightly and let them sit at room temperature for 2-7 days. This second fermentation is where the fizzy magic happens.
Step 6: Chill and Enjoy
Pop your bottles into the fridge to chill. Once they’re cold, carefully open them — they’re ready to drink! Pour a glass and savor the refreshing, fizzy goodness of your homemade kombucha.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR KOMBUCHA BLISS
• Experiment with different fruits and spices — ginger, berries, and citrus are great starters.
• Patience, Young Grasshopper: Fermentation times can vary. Trust your taste buds!
• SCOBY Hotel: Keep extra SCOBYs in a jar with some kombucha for future brews.
Brewing kombucha is like a science experiment you can drink! It’s fun, rewarding, and the perfect way to enjoy a healthy, homemade beverage. So, what are you waiting for? Get brewing, and let the kombucha party begin! Cheers to your fizzy, flavorful adventure!

Effective communication is crucial for ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned regarding your student(s). This principle applies across K-12 levels, college, and for students seeking opportunities such as internships for the upcoming summer or sooner.
As parents and guardians, we often assume we have ample time, only to find ourselves scrambling, playing catch-up, and doing damage control. Drawing from my experiences with my four sons, here are some valuable tips I’ve learned:
• Look at the school calendar and mark all of the grading periods for the year on your personal and family calendars.
• Request a conference with your student’s teacher at the first grading period and ask for a copy of any benchmarks/assessments from the beginning of the school year.
• If your student is struggling, do the following: (indent the bullet points below)
• Ask if the reading or math specialists/department heads can help.
• Does the teacher provide tutoring before or after school?
• Is there help during the school day?
• Look for free online resources or look for a tutor for your student. It’s better to invest and address the gaps early.
• Ask your students if they need help and the dates of their upcoming midterm exams.
• Encourage your students to attend professor’s office hours and tutoring provided by the college or university.
• Take note of the drop and withdrawal dates for classes.
• Protect the grade point average.
• Encourage your students to find a study group and to use the library.
• Have your students set up an appointment with the advisor to review their courses and their current and four year plan to ensure they are on track.
• Attend Career Fairs in the Fall. Bring your resume and look professional.
• Know the due dates for college applications.
• Finish the Common Application essay and/ or the colleges specific essays.
• Ask for letters of recommendations, if you’ve not already done so and make sure they get uploaded to your high school’s platform.
• Make an appointment with your counselor to make sure you aren’t missing anything, and to find out what the process is for requesting transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. Your counselor is your best friend in this process.
• Keep your grades up. No slacking at all this year. Colleges look poorly on it.
• Tour the top five colleges - In person is best, but virtual is also available.
• Summer 2025 applications are open for many large corporations. Some deadlines have already passed for 2025, like Google. I saw a deadline of July 21, 2024 for some summer 2025 internships. Some of the banking industry companies hire two years ahead. Yes, some will hire for summer 2026.
• Many summer 2025 acceptances are given in November and December. This allows for all background checks and other processes the company does for employment.
• Look at local companies and small businesses that offer internships and have partnerships with your local high schools and colleges.
• Check your social media and ensure there is nothing on it that will ruin the opportunity to get an internship.
• Update your LinkedIn page and resume. If you don’t have one, then create one today.
