EARLY ORTHODONTIC EVALUATIONS: WHAT AGE IS THE SWEET SPOT FOR YOUR CHILD?

As a parent, you want to ensure your child’s smile develops beautifully and functionally. One of the most important steps you can take is scheduling an early orthodontic evaluation at the right time. At Rappahannock Orthodontics, we follow the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that children receive their first orthodontic assessment around age 7.
Why Age 7 Is the Sweet Spot
By age 7, most children have developed their first permanent molars and several permanent front teeth. This mixed dentition stage offers orthodontists valuable insights into how the jaw is developing and whether the permanent teeth will have sufficient space to erupt properly. At this age, we can identify potential issues while your child’s bones are still growing and more responsive to treatment.
The Power of Prevention
Early orthodontic evaluations aren’t about rushing into treatment—they’re about strategic planning. During this assessment, we can detect problems such as crowding, spacing issues, crossbites, underbites, or habits like thumb sucking that may affect dental development. Identifying these concerns early enables us to monitor growth patterns and intervene at the optimal time, potentially preventing the need for more complex treatments later.
Some issues are much easier to address during childhood when the jaw bones are still developing. For example, palatal expansion to create space for crowded teeth is more effective in younger patients. Early intervention can also guide proper jaw growth, potentially reducing the need for future tooth extractions or jaw surgery.
What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit
Your child’s initial orthodontic evaluation at Rappahannock Orthodontics will be thorough yet comfortable. We’ll examine your child’s teeth, jaws, and bite relationship, looking for signs of current or developing problems. Most offices, including ours, will take digital x-rays as well as a 3D scan of the teeth for all new patients to get a complete picture of tooth and jaw development.

During this visit, we’ll discuss our findings with you and your child, explaining any concerns in easy-to-understand terms. If treatment isn’t immediately necessary, we’ll establish a monitoring schedule to track development. If early treatment would be beneficial, we’ll outline a customized plan and timeline.
The Bottom Line
Remember, you’re never too old to begin orthodontic treatment, but starting evaluations early gives you and your child the advantage of choice and optimal timing. Early assessment doesn’t mean early treatment for everyone—it means being proactive about your child’s oral health future. Ensure your child’s smile develops with confidence. Please schedule a consultation with Rappahannock Orthodontics and see us at one of our convenient locations in the Amyclae and Chatham offices.

A LOVE STORY SERVED FRESH: A LOVE STORY SERVED FRESH:
Meet Maria and Will Negron Meet Maria and Will Negron © Best Version Media

In the heart of Fredericksburg, where history meets hospitality, Maria and Will Negron have been serving up more than just delicious food—they’ve been dishing out life lessons, love stories, and authentic connections for nearly three decades. This dynamic duo has transformed their passion for food and people into a thriving business that nourishes both body and soul in the local community.
Roots Run Deep
Maria’s connection to the area spans generations, with her family settling in Spotsylvania in the 1980s when her great-grandmother made the bold move from the West Coast. “After Maria finished at the University of Virginia, it just made sense to settle here,” Will explains about their decision to make this region their permanent home.
“In 1996, I arrived in Charlottesville on a Greyhound bus with only two suitcases,” Will laughs. Charlottesville, would be the beginning of this together forever story. For 27 years, they’ve watched their community grow and change while remaining a steadfast cornerstone of the local food scene.
The couple’s appreciation for their location goes beyond mere convenience. “We love the centrality of where we are. The beach, the mountains, the country, and major cities are all within a 4-hour drive,” they share enthusiastically. This geographic sweet spot perfectly complements their adventurous spirits and love for exploration, whether they’re seeking culinary inspiration or simply enjoying a spontaneous getaway.
A Modern Fairy Tale
Their love story reads like something out of a romantic comedy, complete with 90s nostalgia and a healthy dose of fate. “Will and I love telling the story of how we met 31 years ago!! We were young and oh so foolish in our late teens,” Maria recalls with evident fondness. The meet-cute happened at the mall—because

where else would teenagers find love in the early 90s?
But here’s where the story gets interesting: “It was not by chance that we did NOT exchange numbers the day we met, but my cousin had a huge can full of numbers that she had collected…out of the two I picked out of the bin, his number was the first one I paged.”
In an era of beepers and chance encounters, destiny had a sense of humor. Their journey together has been anything but ordinary, including memorable moments, such as appearing on the Ricki Lake show and even experiencing a private Mass with former Pope Benedict at the papal summer home in Castel Gandolfo.
Their marriage has had its tough times as well though.
“We had to buckle down and do some serious work to get where we are,” Maria explains. “Through our couples coaching work, we share our story to help others that may be struggling but have the desire to navigate marital repair.”
Their story continues to be a success, though, because of the work and effort they put into their relationship. “We have made the sweetest lemonade out of the most tart lemons, which– by the way– we drink exclusively,” Will laughs.
Blending Cultures in the Kitchen
Will, a University of Mary Washington alumnus, and Maria, who holds degrees from both the University of Virginia and Howard University, have created something special with their food truck and takeout kitchen. Will’s passion shines through in every dish, as his love of history and culture manifests in unique fusion creations that tell stories on every plate.
Their collaborative approach extends beyond the kitchen into their innovative Supper Club dinners, intimate gatherings that “boast 8-10 guests intimately enjoying both unique and nostalgic four-course meals.” These aren’t just dinners—they’re cultural experiences that connect food with heritage and community.
While Will commands the kitchen as head chef, Maria serves as his trusted sous chef, though her primary calling lies in mental health. Running her private practice, she provides therapy for children, teens, and adults, with a particular passion for helping
couples navigate infidelity. She provides her clients with the same nurturing spirit she brings to their food business.
Family First, Always
The Negrons are proud parents to three adult children—Franki, Jovani, and Jovi— who grew up immersed in the sports culture of Fredericksburg.
“Growing up in Fredericksburg, sports and school events were a regular part of our daily lives,” they recall, having coached their children in soccer through organizations like the former Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association (FASA), while also supporting them in golf and swimming.
Their parenting journey spanned both private and public education in the area, and they admit with characteristic humor: “We can’t lie, the best day was when the last one graduated!! No more school for us!” But don’t mistake this for relief—their children remain integral parts of their daily lives and business, “often helping [us] on the truck or trying to catch a bite to eat together.”
Giving Back Through Food and Connection
The Negrons understand that their role in the community extends far beyond serving meals. Their upcoming “Baking Boys to Men” series exemplifies their commitment to local youth, where Will plans to combine his culinary skills with life coaching to help middle and high school young men “develop their skills and increase their emotional intelligence while learning how to bake.”
Their establishment serves as an unofficial community center where “people stop by not just for a bite to eat but for encouragement and conversation.” This open-door policy reflects their belief that food is a universal connector, breaking down barriers and building relationships.
Adventures Near and Far
Despite their busy schedules running a restaurant, the Negrons maintain their adventurous spirits. Cape Charles ranks as a favorite destination, along with Niagara Falls and the New England coast. They’ve traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Caribbean, always seeking new experiences and culinary inspiration.
When time is limited, they embrace spontaneous local adventures: “Often we just get in the car and see where we end up when we have time.” Frequently, these impromp -

tu journeys lead them to Washington, D.C., where they explore museums and visit Eastern Market, which holds special significance for Maria, whose grandparents once lived directly across from the market on North Capitol Street.
Local Favorites and Simple Pleasures
Even food industry professionals have their go-to spots, and for the Negrons, it’s Benny’s Pizza. “We ask for the pizza cooked crisp, and it is PERFECT!” says Maria, who is from Long Island, so believe her when she says “it’s not a NY slice, but it’s the best slice in the ‘BURG!”
Their downtime preferences remain refreshingly simple: walking downtown,

spending time by the water, and engaging with their community. “We have mixed business and pleasure, shamelessly LOL!” they admit, acknowledging how their professional and personal lives have beautifully intertwined.
The Negrons represent the best of what makes small communities thrive—authentic people who’ve built something meaningful while staying true to their roots. In a world of corporate chains and impersonal service, Maria and Will continue to prove that the secret ingredient in any successful recipe is genuine human connection, served with a side of humor and a generous helping of heart.

NATURALLI MI:
HELPING THE COMMUNITY EMBRACE NATURAL WELLNESS

Amirah Clowers has transformed a personal health journey into a thriving business that serves the Fredericksburg and Stafford communities. Five years ago, after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, Clowers turned to her Trinidadian heritage for healing solutions. What she discovered would not only change her life but also inspire her to help others embrace natural wellness.

From Personal Healing to Community Impact
The business, aptly named Naturally Mi, emerged from Clowers’ personal wellness journey when she sought natural alternatives to manage her hypothyroidism. Drawing on sea moss, a staple in her family’s Caribbean tradition, she experienced such powerful results that her husband encouraged her to share these benefits with others. What began as a small step has evolved into a successful venture serving both local markets and online customers.
Naturalli Mi specializes in sea moss-based products, offering everything from gels and gummies to soaps, skincare items, and smoothies. Each product is carefully crafted to support immune health, energy, and overall wellness. Clowers explains her business philosophy simply: “wellness should be natural, holistic, and accessible.” She believes that health starts from the inside out, and that nature provides the best remedies for maintaining balance and vitality in daily life.
Family as Foundation
Family serves as Clowers’ greatest inspiration, particularly her oldest daughter, who has special needs. “She motivates me every day to push through challenges and create something meaningful,” Clowers shares. As a mother of three—Jayda (22), Alanah (15), and Amare (6)—she balances her entrepreneurial pursuits with family life and education. Currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Leadership & Management at the University of Mary Washington, with an expected graduation in 2027, Clowers exemplifies the juggling act many small business owners navigate daily. The Clowers household is lively, complete with two French Bulldogs named Cash and Smokey, who, along with the children, often “help” during product creation. “Sometimes that means extra messes, but it always brings laughter into the process,” she notes, emphasizing how music and family energy keep her workdays joyful rather than burdensome.
Community Connection and Future Vision
What Clowers enjoys most about her work is the personal connection with customers. “Hearing their stories of how my products have helped them makes everything worthwhile,” she explains. This customer-focused approach reflects her broader community philosophy: “When small businesses thrive, communities thrive.”
Her message to the neighborhood is encouraging and accessible: “Natural wellness is possible and within reach.” She emphasizes that small steps toward healthier living can create transformative changes, and she feels honored to support others on their wellness journeys.
Looking ahead, Clowers has ambitious plans to expand Naturalli Mi’s reach. Her next goal involves launching a mobile food truck or trailer to serve sea moss smoothies more efficiently at community events, bringing natural wellness directly to more people throughout the region.
Through Naturalli Mi, Amirah Clowers has created more than just a business—she’s built a bridge between Caribbean healing traditions and modern community wellness needs, proving that sometimes the most powerful solutions come from returning to nature’s wisdom.

ELEVATE & EMBELLISH: INCORPORATING ACCENT RUGS FOR IMPACT AND CHARM

With the change of seasons comes the need to change décor. What better way to embellish a room with floor fashion than to add an area rug? Accent rugs are floor coverings and powerful design tools that completely transform any space. Whether working with hardwood, tile, or carpet, layering the right rug can bring warmth, texture, and personality to any room. Here’s how to use accent rugs by incorporating style, layering, and placement.
Area Rugs are Centerpieces
Area Rugs are anchor pieces in interior design and a foundation for the room’s décor. A statement rug can become the room’s centerpiece if your floors are neutral, like light oak, beige tile, or neutral laminate. To choose an area rug effectively, consider its material, pattern, and size. Wool is the gold standard because it is soft underfoot and durable. Cotton and synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester are more cost-effective. Finally, natural fibers offer durability but are less smooth to the touch. Select an inspirational piece in the room to pull ideas from, and
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK NK FLOORS FOR BRINGING YOU THIS

then choose patterns, colors, or geometric shapes from this piece for the rug theme. An accent rug can also be a seasonal design piece: mix in warmer tones for fall or lighter pastels in spring to keep your décor feeling fresh.
Placement is Key
As with any centerpiece, placement draws the eye. The placement of accent rugs drastically changes the look and feel of a space. In entryways, a small carpet offers a welcoming touch. Placing one under the coffee table in the living room or under the dining room table will anchor your seating area. A runner in the hallway or kitchen can create flow and visual continuity. A plush rug at the foot of the bed adds warmth underfoot in bedrooms.
Layer
to Increase Depth
Layering rugs is a trend known for its cozy, lived-in aesthetic. Place a smaller, patterned accent rug over a larger neutral base rug to add dimension and visual excitement. This works exceptionally well in living rooms and bedrooms where you want to define separate zones

or introduce more texture. Be sure to vary sizes and materials, such as a bold, wool rug on a muted, engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl plank. Pairing placement with style, accent rugs become flooring tapestries. At NK Floors, we can bind any size carpet for any room. We have designer carpets that can be transformed into the area rug of your dreams. We offer state-of-the-art area rugs from renowned dealers such as Anderson Tuftex and Stanton. As the crisp, cool air rolls in, let us help you roll out your new area rug and turn your floors from boring to beautiful this fall!

Food is the foundation of health. A balanced diet fuels strong bones, healthy skin, a resilient immune system, and steady energy. It also helps prevent obesity, diabetes, and inflammation that can contribute to arthritis, digestive problems, or skin conditions. Choose a diet that is complete, balanced, and appropriate for your pet’s age and lifestyle. A good rule of thumb is to look for an AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) label. Overfeeding is a common pitfall, so ask your veterinary team about your pet’s daily calorie needs and how to check body condition at home. Comfort Paws also offers weight management resources at comfortpaws.com/resources.
For families interested in home-cooked diets, it is important to ensure meals meet vitamin and mineral requirements. Balance. it provides free, nutritionally balanced recipes. Pets with medical conditions may need diets designed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, which you can find at vetspecialists.com.

From a holistic perspective, foods also carry energetic properties that can support balance and help manage chronic conditions. A practitioner trained in food therapy can tailor diets to your pet’s unique constitution and needs.
Pillar 2: Emotional and Social Well-Being

Movement is preventive medicine. Regular activity maintains a healthy weight, builds strong muscles and joints, and reduces stress. When it comes to mobility, “motion is lotion.” Pets who are inactive are more prone to stiffness, arthritis, and obesity.
Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of daily activity. For dogs, try walks, fetch, or agility games. For cats, encourage climbing, toy play, or food puzzles. Senior pets may need modifications, such as short walks, rolling balls instead of long throws, or traction mats to reduce slips. The goal is safe, enjoyable movement suited to their abilities.
The Preventive Approach
Veterinary checkups and preventive care like vaccines and parasite control are essential to good health. But true wellness is an everyday commitment. By supporting your pet’s nutrition, emotional balance, and physical activity, you can help prevent disease, catch concerns early, and keep your pet comfortable, active, and thriving at every stage of life.

LYNDALE’S HONEY DO LIST:
MAKING A HOUSE A HOME, ONE TASK AT A TIME

With eight years of dedicated service, Lyndale’s Honey Do List has established itself as a trusted name in home improvement services throughout the community. Founded by Lawrence Adams, this family-oriented business operates under the heartfelt mission of “Helping People Love Their Home” – a philosophy that drives every project they undertake.
Lawrence Adams brings both personal experience and professional expertise to his role as an innovator in the home services industry. “I have a passion for helping people with projects around their home,” Lawrence explains, reflecting on what motivates him daily.
His journey began when he and his wife moved into their own home and discovered the challenges of completing necessary tasks without help. This personal experience sparked the creation of a business designed to fill that gap for others in similar situations.
The company’s core mission extends beyond simply completing tasks. “We’re in the business of helping people love their home by completing their To Do List,” Lawrence states, emphasizing how each completed project contributes to making homes more comfortable and welcoming spaces. This approach has resonated strongly with customers who appreciate having reliable, neighborhood-based support for their home improvement needs.
Lyndale’s Honey Do List specializes in TV mounting, furniture assembly, window blind installation, and assistance with various home projects. Their expertise particularly shines in situations where homeowners have attempted DIY projects that didn’t go as planned.

“One of the funniest things in this business is when people have me come over and complete a task-- especially when it’s ‘assembly gone wrong.’ Some people start a project, and we come along and finish it for them,” Lawrence shares with good humor.
This rescue approach has become so common that customers frequently express relief upon completion. As Lawrence notes, “One of the funny things I hear all the time is ‘I should’ve called you sooner,’” which is a testament to the quality and efficiency his team provides.
Beyond immediate home improvements, Lawrence views his work through a broader lens of community building and family legacy. As a devoted family man with a wife, a high school senior daughter at home, three adult children living out of state, six granddaughters, and one grandson on the way, Lawrence understands the importance of creating spaces where families can thrive.
“[I hope] to be an inspiration and leave a legacy for my family to appreciate and carry on the family business,” he explains.
The company’s community-focused approach sets them apart in the home services industry. “You have community help right in your neighborhood. We help build the community,” Lawrence emphasizes, highlighting how local support strengthens neighborhood connections and fosters a sense of belonging among residents.
Through consistent high-quality service, attention to detail, and genuine care for customer satisfaction, Lyndale’s Honey Do List continues to transform houses into homes, one project at a time.

NAMI Rappahannock:
Forty Years of Empowering Youth and Adult Mental Health Through Creativity and Community

Abigail Nyinaku is a senior at Colonial Forge High School. Outside of writing, she enjoys making art, playing the violin, and has a strong passion for legal studies. Abigail is also the current Vice President of her school’s National Honor Society and runs a handmade personalized greeting-card business, called Heartfelt, in her free time.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Rappahannock region chapter, which has served Fredericksburg and its neighboring counties of Stafford, Caroline, King George, and Spotsylvania for over forty years, is making positive strides in youth mental health outreach by creating safe spaces and innovative platforms for individuals to thrive. As the mental health of youth has become an increasingly important topic, amid rising rates of depression and anxiety experienced by youth across the United States, this organization stands out for its commitment to giving youth a voice, numerous resources, and opportunities to heal and grow.
Beginning in 1984, a notice was published in the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star newspaper announcing a support group meeting that was to be held in a basement room of a former Mary Washington Hospital site in Fall Hill. Back then, the organization was founded by Dagmar Reilly and Judith Greer, two individuals who believed that mental health support and advocacy were a crucial part of uplifting individuals in our community. With a vision focused on spreading awareness-- “To be a pillar of support in [the] community where an individual and/or their families, seeking mental health resources, can access them at no cost, discreetly and stigma-free”-- NAMI has helped to foster a community embarked on seeking change and healing for those struggling with mental health issues.
At the heart of NAMI Rappahannock’s approach to outreach across our community is a call for creativity. In the spring of 2025, the organization held its annual Youth and Young Adult Art Contest and encouraged young creators to use media — like paint, graphite, digital media, or writing— to share their art publicly. Winners of this competition had their art featured on merchandise made available to all, and were encouraged to “Bloom into Wellness.”
One prominent and recurring theme in NAMI Rappahannock’s outreach is the phrase “Come, tell your story!” With a mission statement that verifies the organization’s drive to provide mental health resources

to Rappahannock-located individuals through “education, support, connection, and advocacy,” NAMI has continued to showcase its efforts towards creating lasting change. Currently, NAMI offers both family and recovery support groups for individuals seeking to connect with others and provide support. The organization also offers various free peer-led support groups led by trained individuals to help those dealing with mental health or substance abuse recovery.
Beginning in April 2025, NAMI also adopted the Peer-to-Peer Education Program, which is an eight-session-long recovery course for adults with mental health conditions. “NAMI Peer-to-Peer is uplifting, life-saving, and an eye-opening experience that changed how I see myself,” says one attendee of the peer group sessions, “The biggest thing I gained from this class was to become my own advocate and best friend.”

NAMI’s efforts demonstrate how community engagement and creativity can transform lives. From its ongoing art contests to storytelling circles, the organization’s educational outreach to ensure that mental health remains in the public eye, and encouragement towards young people to seek help, express themselves, and find hope together continues to strengthen our community for the better, reassuring all that it is okay to seek help and providing a community filled with encouragement.

BUILDING SECOND CHANCES AND FIRST OPPORTUNITIES:
GO LOCAL FXBG CREATES PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

When local communities thrive, everyone benefits. That is the simple, yet powerful, notion that drives a grassroots movement in Fredericksburg. Go Local FXBG, a nonprofit founded by Marcus Toler and co-founded by Kitty Melerski, is creating tangible pathways to opportunity through hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world support for those who need it most.
Marcus, the organization’s Founder and Executive Director, brings a unique perspective shaped by his own experience with second chances.
“I’m inspired when I see someone get the chance I once needed,” Marcus shares. His journey from personal hardship to community leadership exemplifies the transformative power of opportunity—the same kind Go Local FXBG now provides to others, instilling hope and inspiration in those it touches.
Kitty, who serves as Co-Founder and Nonprofit Advisor, adds crucial expertise in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and community advocacy.
“I’m inspired by the overlooked voices finally being heard,” she shares. “Helping to build programs that connect funding, structure, and real opportunity to people who need it most is what excites me every day.” As a mother of two, she hopes her children will see the importance of giving back and pursue community service throughout their lives.
Three Pillars of Impact
Go Local FXBG operates through three core programs designed to address different community needs. The Second Chance Workforce program focuses on entrepreneurship and digital upskilling for returning citizens, veterans, and women seeking fresh starts after facing hardship.
The Youth Internship & Career Pathways program offers hands-on experience in business, media, and marketing to students aged 16-24, bridging the critical gap between classroom theory and real-world application.

The inspiration for this youth focus arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Marcus first began working with interns. “He quickly realized the number one challenge they faced: graduating with degrees but lacking real-world experience,” the founders recall. “That gap was keeping them from securing jobs in their chosen fields.” Today, when interns tell them their time with Go Local FXBG was the first time they felt their ideas truly mattered in a professional setting, it reinforces that their work extends beyond programs—it’s about building pathways to belief, confidence, and opportunity.
The third pillar, the Local Business Accelerator, offers affordable marketing, coaching, and exposure to small businesses seeking to expand their reach and impact within the community.
Community Connection Through Events
Beyond their core programs, Go Local FXBG strengthens community bonds through creative fundraising events. Beginning this month, they’re launching weekly Trivia for a Cause nights at Brock’s Riverside Grill, with each week highlighting a different local nonprofit. They also host Silent Disco for a Cause events, making it easy for residents to enjoy themselves while supporting meaningful causes.
The organization’s reach already extends across thousands of households in Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania through their Go Local FXBG Mailer, which connects over 10,000 families per issue with local businesses and nonprofits. This communication tool serves as a vital bridge between community members and the resources available to them.
Looking Ahead
While Go Local FXBG has accomplished significant outreach in just one year, Marcus and Kitty have ambitious expansion plans. Spring 2026 will mark the official launch of their Youth Internship & Career Pathways Program and Local Business Accelerator, featuring masterminds, hands-on workshops, and structured mentorship opportunities.
“We’re building a movement powered by community—volunteers, interns, small businesses, and neighbors who want to make the region stronger together,” the founders emphasize. Their philosophy remains simple yet powerful: when local thrives, everyone thrives.
Marcus, a proud father who shares a birthday with his daughter Victoria, has called Fredericksburg home for years, building businesses and now creating this nonprofit as part of his lasting legacy. Together with Kitty’s unwavering commitment to ensuring equity and giving overlooked voices a seat at the table, they’ve created an organization that understands both struggle and possibility, promoting a sense of justice and fairness in all their endeavors.
Go Local FXBG represents more than a nonprofit—it’s a testament to the power of community collaboration and the belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed. For those interested in joining this growing movement, more information about programs, events, and volunteer opportunities can be found at golocalfxbg.org.
GRACE, SERVICE, AND SCHOLARSHIP:
WHAT BEING A DEBUTANTE TRULY MEANS
I have the honor of participating in the 2025 Cultured Pearls Debutante Cotillion, hosted by the Sisters of Ivy (SOI) Educational Foundation, Incorporated, in partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Xi Upsilon Omega Chapter. For me, being selected as a debutante is more than wearing a gown and learning the waltz. A cotillion is a tradition with deep history.
In African American culture, cotillions are spaces of pride and preparation. They are places where academic excellence is celebrated and young women are taught to develop confidence, etiquette, and leadership skills. Fundraising and service ensure that debutantes are not only introduced to society but also give back to their community. They also serve as a reminder that attributes like dignity, education, and service are not outdated but essential values to carry forward.
My first fundraiser, Yoga at the Vineyard, reflected that tradition. With the gracious sponsorship of Potomac Point Winery and Vineyard, family, friends, and neighbors came together in a beautiful setting to support scholarship. Ms. Lisa Henderson, our inspiring yoga instructor, led the class with warmth and encouragement, making everyone feel welcome. Local businesses, Beauty Bees Boutique and Clean Slate Bath & Body, also supported us by donating beauty products and candles, making our raffle baskets extra special. And because every debutante needs a signature keepsake, my debutante candle will be available online throughout the season, giving supporters a meaningful and great-smelling way to stay connected to this journey.
Every dollar raised helps provide scholarships for debutantes like me and supports charitable efforts within the local community. That combined mission is what makes this tradition so meaningful: it celebrates beauty and grace while also calling us to serve with responsibility.
Being a debutante is an honor, but even more, it is a promise to move through the world with purpose and intention. I am grateful for every sponsor, supporter, and community member who is walking with me in this season of growth, legacy, and service.

The first quarter grades are in or will be soon. If your child did well, celebrating their success is a great idea. Acknowledging a job well done, no matter how small, teaches them that hard work is valued. This can translate to future success in the workforce through bonuses, awards, or promotions. If your child is struggling, the time to act is now.
Steps to Take if Your Child’s Grades Are Slipping:
• Schedule a meeting with their teacher. Discuss specific areas of concern and potential solutions.
• Ask about tutoring options. See if the school offers free tutoring or if the teacher can recommend a local tutor.

• Talk to your child. Ask them how you can best support them. They may have ideas you haven’t considered.

Halloween Fun: Craft a Cute Lollipop Spider

Directions:

Materials:
☐ 1 round lollipop (Tootsie Pop, Dum Dum, Blow Pop, etc.)
☐ 2 black pipe cleaners (for legs)
☐ 2 small googly eyes
☐ White glue or hot glue (adult use)
☐ Scissors
1. Prepare the lollipop: Keep the lollipop in its wrapper. This will be the spider’s body.
2. Make the legs: Cut each pipe cleaner in half. You should now have 4 equal pieces. Twist them around the lollipop stick, just under the candy, so there are 8 legs (4 on each side).
3. Shape the legs: Bend each pipe cleaner piece in the middle to form jointed spider legs. Adjust until they look even.
4. Add the eyes: Glue two googly eyes onto the lollipop candy (or onto a small black paper oval you glue first, if you want a bigger head). Let dry.
5. Finish: Spread out the legs, and your lollipop spider is ready to decorate or give away.
Happy Halloween “Let the spider crawl... right into your treat bag!”

This activity is brought to you by Mora Soan, author of the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed.
