DearNeighbors of Courthouse!

As the leaves turn and a crispness fills the air, we embrace all the wonderful things that fall brings to our community. From pumpkin patches and fall festivals to cozy bowls of soup and football games, this season is all about savoring the little moments and rejoicing that the Virginia humidity has FINALLY dissipated!

This month, we’re thrilled to introduce you to the Loescher family—an athletic family making waves in Stafford. Whether they’re running local races or cheering on their kids at high school sporting events, the Loeschers embody the active and tight-knit spirit of our community. Their passion for sports and family truly brings people together, making them a perfect fit for our Stafford neighborhoods.

October also marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we are proud to highlight Bradford Jenner and his team at Affordable Automotive, who are supporting Brakes for Breasts by offering free brake pads and donating proceeds to fund breast cancer vaccine research. It’s a cause close to many hearts, and we encourage everyone to support this local initiative and other fundraisers that arise this October.

Plus, we have fun fall events for your family, a hearty soup recipe, new business sponsors, and much more in the following pages. Happy fall, Neighbors of Courthouse!

Happy reading, Mallory Hardgrove

The Home Doctor: Transforming Homes, One Project at

For nearly 12 years, Phillip Gehrig, founder of The Home Doctor, has been providing the community with expert exterior remodeling services. Specializing in windows, roofing, siding, gutters, doors, and attic insulation, The Home Doctor has earned a reputation for its unwavering commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. “The philosophy behind our business is simple: if we take care of our customers, offer good products, and fair prices, success will follow,” says Gehrig.

Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Gehrig didn’t set out to start a home remodeling business. What began as a summer job turned into a long-lasting career and, eventually, the founding of The Home Doctor. “I got into this line of work by accident, really,” he admits. “But 12 years later, here we are, helping people transform their homes.”

What sets The Home Doctor apart is its dedication to doing things the right way. “We don’t chase making money,” Gehrig explains. “We chase success by taking care of people and doing the right thing. The money will come with it.”

This customer-first approach has earned the company a loyal following in Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and North Carolina, with plans to expand into Florida and the greater Philadelphia area soon.

One of Gehrig’s most rewarding aspects of his work is interacting with homeowners and employees.

“Every day is different,” he says. “It’s always a new challenge, a new house, a new homeowner. I love that it’s not the same repetitive thing day after day.” This variety keeps the job fresh and exciting, and it’s clear that Gehrig’s passion for helping others drives the company’s success.

a Time

The Home Doctor’s growth has been impressive, but Gehrig still maintains a relaxed attitude when it comes to the ups and downs of running a business.

“When it rains, it pours,” he jokes.

“Maybe we have a tough week in sales, but that just means next week’s going to be great. Every obstacle is easy to overcome if you give it some time.”

Gehrig’s message to the community is simple: “Give The Home Doctor a shot. Worst case scenario: you don’t hire us. Best case scenario: we transform your home and make your dreams come true for a better price than the competition.”

Outside of work, Gehrig enjoys life in Manassas, Virginia, where he lives with his wife and two dogs.

“We moved out here for more space, and we’ve really come to love the countryside,” he shares. Though he grew up in the city, he now appreciates the quieter, more rural lifestyle.

As The Home Doctor continues to grow and expand, Gehrig remains focused on what matters most: his customers. “If you or someone you know needs our services, give us a call. We’d be happy to help.”

KEEPING PACE WITH THE K s : The Loescher Family’s Athletic Legacy in Stafford

The first letter of their names isn’t the only thing the Loescher family has in common. Kristen, Ken, Kayla (21), Kendall (19), and Kate (17) all have a passion for athletics and academics, but each has carved their own path and made their mark in the Stafford community.

Kristen and Ken’s story began at Cedarville University in Ohio, where they were both on the cross country and track teams. Kristen humorously recalls her lessthan-stellar cross-country performance:

“At the time, I was NOT a distance runner, but the cross country coach asked me to join the team after my freshman year of track because he said it would help me build endurance for the 400m hurdles,” Kristen explained. “Let’s just say that I was asked to return to the cross-country team for a second year because of my excellent van-driving skills, not my running skills.” Kristen landed the honor of driving the van for the girl’s team, and “Coach King knew he could count on me not to lose him in traffic— I think he also knew he didn’t have to count on me to be one of his top seven runners at the meet,” Kristen laughed.

But while Kristen had her sights on the road and getting the team to their away meets safely, Ken had his sights on Kristen. The couple quickly became college sweethearts, and their love blossomed into a lasting partnership. Today, they navigate careers, family life, and a thriving event business while passing on their passion for running to their three daughters.

Building a Life in Stafford

The Loescher family moved to Stafford in 2016, driven by Ken’s job at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in Springfield and their desire for a shorter commute. They initially settled in Embrey Mill but moved to the Colonial Forge neighborhood in 2018 to be closer to the high school and enjoy more space. Kristen’s role at the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sports Center made Embrey Mill an ideal location for the family. Still, their ultimate decision was also influenced by the excellent school system, which they knew would provide their daughters with a solid academic and athletic foundation.

Kristen, who holds a degree in Elementary Education, found her passion in the fitness industry after moving to Virginia. Over the years, she worked at the Rappahannock Area YMCA, eventually managing the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sports Center and Pure Barre Stafford. But it was in 2019, alongside Ken, that Kristen’s entrepreneurial spirit took center stage.

Together, they launched Arsenal Events, a race timing and event management company.

“Everyone remembers what 2020 was like, so let’s just say that it was NOT a good year to launch an events-based business,” Kristen explained. “Thankfully, through the support of the local running community, our faithful business partners, and one perfectly-timed grant, the business survived and is thriving now!” Arsenal Events organizes the Stafford Race Series today, which includes the Spring Fever 5K at Stafford Hospital, the Go for Bo race hosted by Ebenezer UMC at Stafford Regional Airport, and the Halloween 5K and Frosty 5K both held at Embrey Mill Park. In addition, they provide timing services for 50-70 races yearly.

For the Loeschers, the Stafford community has been a source of connection and joy, with many friendships forged at local races and high school sporting events. Kristen says it best: “It’s such a convenient, peaceful, and fun place to live, but we especially love the people in this area. There are so many active families and individuals, and we love connecting with them at races we host or time and at high school sporting events.”

The Next Generation: Kayla, Kendall, and Kate

The Loescher daughters have all followed in their parents’ footsteps, excelling academically and athletically.

Kayla Loescher, the eldest, set the pace for her sisters at Colonial Forge High School, where she was a standout in track and cross country. Now a senior at Hillsdale College in Michigan, she’s double-majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics, all while continuing to run competitively.

Kayla’s summers have been equally impressive, with internships at Hillsdale, Montana State University, and the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. This past summer, she lived at home and commuted to D.C., giving her a taste of the daily grind. In her downtime, Kayla enjoys baking and is known as the family’s #1 Nisu (a Finnish bread) baker.

Kendall, the middle Loescher sister, made her mark at Colonial Forge as a field hockey standout. Her senior year was particularly memorable, as her team made it to the State Semifinals, and she was named Region 6B Player of the Year.

Now a student at Grand Canyon University in Arizona, where she’s majoring in Economics, Kendall is known for her strong work ethic. She balances her studies with working at Jersey Mike’s in Stafford and Arizona. In her spare time, Kendall loves hiking around beautiful Sedona and attending concerts with friends.

The youngest Loescher, Kate, has already made a name for herself on the track. Known as “Killer Kate,” she holds all of Colonial Forge’s school records from the 800m- 3200m in track to the 5,000m in cross country. Her junior year was particularly stellar, with runner-up finishes in cross country and indoor track and a state title in the outdoor 3200m.

While still considering her college options, Kate is being recruited by several top-tier programs. When she’s not busy with school and training, she helps out with the family business, Arsenal Events.

Pets and Outdoor Passions

In addition to their athletic pursuits, the Loeschers share their home with two cats—Kix (14) and Keven (13)—and two Pomeranian Poodles, Karli and Ken’Z, both 6. Like the rest of the family, the cats’ names start with “K,” and Keven is “somewhat of a celebrity on the neighborhood Facebook page.” Meanwhile, Karli and Ken’Z, although from different litters, were adopted as a bonded pair and love to make their presence known by barking at every delivery driver.

The Loeschers are outdoor enthusiasts, too. They often hike at Shenandoah National Park, with White Oak Canyon being a family favorite. They also fondly recall their most memorable vacation—a trip to Kauai, Hawaii—where they explored the island’s breathtaking hikes, stunning beaches, and delicious food.

“Kauai was an unforgettable trip,” Kristen said. “The hikes were amazing, and we still talk about how much we loved the beaches and the food. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”

They also visit Michigan each summer, where Kristen’s father owns a berry farm. The girls time their visits with strawberry season to help pick berries for orders, and they enjoy the beaches and hiking spots during their stay.

This athletic family, with deep roots in the Stafford community, continues to inspire through their dedication to sports, education, and giving back—whether it’s on the track, at local races, or in the comfort of their home with their beloved pets.

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader involved in the Rotary Club of Stafford and a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service Above Self.”

The pandemic exposed various flaws in the education system and revealed many students struggling academically. However, some students excelled, even outperforming their pre-pandemic performance. What if your child is already above grade level? This can pose a challenge for families.

and I believe high-achieving and gifted students also need support. As a parent, how can you ensure your child is challenged and reaches their full potential?

To ensure your child reaches their full potential, consider these steps:

• Assess Academic Standing: Get a reading and math assessment from a reputable provider.

• Review Benchmark Results: Obtain copies of your child’s academic benchmarks from the start, middle, and end of the year.

• Meet with the Teacher: Discuss how the teacher plans to address your child’s needs for advancement.

• Explore Resources: Find out about available resources and staff to help your child stay ahead.

• Understand Growth Expectations: Aim for at least one grade level of growth.

• Request Assessments: If you suspect your child may be gifted and the school hasn’t assessed them, request testing or consult your pediatrician.

• Communicate with Your Child: Check if they are bored or seeking more challenges.

• Seek Enrichment Opportunities: Look for additional enrichment activities both in and out of school.

High expectations for all students should be standard in education. With over 30 years in the field, I’ve observed that some bright students may downplay their abilities to fit in or avoid outshining peers. Every student has unique gifts, and as I’ve told my sons, “Embrace your greatness.”

High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.

I remember crying after my first day of kindergarten because I hadn’t learned to read yet, but my mother reassured me I’d get there. As a former first-grade teacher, I believe first grade is crucial. I had an excellent teacher who managed a combined class of first through third graders, and collaborated with the teacher next door for fourth through sixth graders. This setup allowed me to learn at my level in reading and math, and the strong foundation from first through fourth grades helped me skip fifth grade and deliver the sixth-grade graduation speech. Despite many students struggling, some are thriving. I wasn’t identified as gifted, though my sister was, – Charles Kettering

Wag More, Hurt Less:

A Guide to Pain-Free Living for Your Pet

Last month, we explored the subtle signs that might reveal your furry friend is in pain. Now that you’ve recognized these signs, you might be asking, “What can I do to help?” The good news is that chronic pain in pets can be effectively managed, allowing them to lead a happier, more comfortable life. Here’s a closer look at the variety of options available to help your pet feel their best.

The Power of Modern Medications

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy: Moving Towards Comfort

When it comes to managing chronic pain, medication is often the first line of defense. Veterinarian-prescribed NSAIDs, such as carprofen and meloxicam, are tailored for dogs and cats to reduce inflammation and ease pain. If your pet doesn’t tolerate traditional NSAIDs well, newer options like grapiprant can offer relief with fewer side effects. To boost the effectiveness of these medications, pain-modulating drugs like gabapentin are often added to the mix.

But medication doesn’t stop there—joint supplements, omega-3 fatty acids, and injectable treatments like Adequan can work wonders in protecting cartilage and maintaining joint health. Monoclonal antibody injections (Librela and Solensia), as well as regenerative joint injections using stem cells and platelets can provide targeted, long-lasting relief.

Just as in humans, physical therapy is a game-changer for pets living with chronic pain. Imagine your pet receiving a soothing massage or a gentle joint mobilization session—these manual therapies can significantly reduce discomfort and improve flexibility. Stretching and passive range of motion (PROM) exercises help keep their joints limber and healthy.

Therapeutic exercises are another crucial component designed to strengthen muscles, improve balance, and enhance overall mobility. And because your pet’s care doesn’t end when they leave the clinic, a personalized home exercise plan (HEP) ensures they continue to make progress. When paired with a customized diet and weight management plan, rehabilitation therapy can reduce the strain on joints and help your pet stay active and pain-free.

Embracing Integrative and Holistic Therapies

For those open-minded to a holistic approach, there’s no shortage of effective options. Acupuncture, for example, is a time-tested method that can alleviate pain and promote healing in pets. Chinese herbal medications can be used alongside traditional treatments, providing an extra layer of relief.

In addition, non-invasive therapies like therapeutic laser, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), shockwave, and electrical stimulation (TENS, NMES) offer innovative ways to manage pain by enhancing circulation, reducing inflammation, and stimulating natural healing.

Tailoring the Perfect Plan for Your Pet

No two pets are the same, and their pain management shouldn’t be either. The key is finding the right blend of treatments that suit your pet’s specific needs.

By working closely with your veterinarian, you can create a customized plan that combines medications, physical therapy, and integrative therapies. This individualized approach will help your beloved companion live a happier, more comfortable life, free from the burden of chronic pain.

Pixie’s Pole Gym and Dance Academy: A Unique Approach to Fitness and Community

In Stafford, Virginia, Pixie’s Pole Gym and Dance Academy offers a different kind of fitness experience. Founded by Alvaro Castillo, the gym focuses on pole dancing and aerial arts, providing a welcoming space for people of all ages and fitness levels to explore strength and movement.

“We started this journey to create a space where everyone, regardless of their fitness level or dance background, can explore the empowering world of pole dance,” Alvaro says.

Alvaro’s interest in pole fitness began during a business trip to India, where he discovered Mallakhamb, a traditional Indian sport combining gymnastics and yoga on a vertical pole.

“Watching the athletes, I was amazed by their strength and technique,” he recalls. This inspired him to look into pole fitness when he returned to the U.S. and eventually led him to start Pixie’s Pole Gym.

Alvaro noticed a need for a more inclusive pole fitness space. “I wanted to create a gym that was welcoming to everyone,” he explains. This vision solidified when he met his business partner, Tabatha Ley, a former ballet dancer who also saw the potential of pole fitness. Together, they opened Pixie’s Pole Gym with the goal of building a supportive community.

Community is at the heart of Pixie’s Pole Gym. “The support and camaraderie here are unique,” says Alvaro. With its focus on inclusivity and personal growth, the gym provides a fresh take on fitness that resonates with its members.

“I have found, and others who have been pole dancing in the past can corroborate, that the sense of community created by pole is incomparable to anything else,” Alvaro says. In addition to its regular classes, Pixie’s Pole Gym hosts events, workshops, and private parties, making it a versatile space for both fitness and social gatherings. The gym’s emphasis on community is reflected in its warm, inviting atmosphere, where members are encouraged to connect, support one another, and celebrate their progress together.

As Pixie’s Pole Gym continues to grow, Alvaro and his team are exploring opportunities to expand their unique approach to other locations. “We are now in talks about franchising Pixie’s,” he reveals, with the goal of bringing their inclusive and empowering fitness experience to more communities. However, no matter how much they expand, Alvaro emphasizes that Stafford will always hold a special place in his heart.

“Stafford will always remain the first and most special location,” he says, reflecting on the journey that brought him from a serendipitous discovery in India to building a thriving community in Virginia.

Pixie’s Pole Gym is more than just a place to work out; it’s a space where people come together to celebrate strength, grace, and the joy of movement.

“Our gym is a sanctuary where confidence blooms, friendships are forged, and the joy of dance is accessible to all,” Alvaro sums up.

Whether you’re looking to try something new, challenge yourself physically, or join a vibrant and uplifting community, Pixie’s Pole Gym offers a unique fitness experience that inspires confidence, creativity, and connection.

To learn more, stop in and see Alvaro and his staff during their business hours 7am– 7pm, email pixie@pixiespolegym.com, or follow them on Facebook.

North Nation’s Road to Graduation:

A Journey of Growth and Self-Discovery

Nora Ahmad, a rising senior at North Stafford High School, is involved with the school’s DECA Club and the Book Buddy program. She harbors a strong interest in literature, journalism, business, and writing. Nora aspires to achieve her dream of becoming a published author one day.

As the new school year begins, students at North Stafford High School are settling into new routines, habits, and challenges. Each student is on their own journey, navigating personal and academic obstacles, all while working toward the ultimate goal: graduation. The faculty at North Stafford are dedicated to ensuring that every student succeeds, but the reality is that life outside of school can often get in the way of academic performance. For many students, high school is a time of growth, self-discovery, and resilience.

“Entering freshman year was a challenge for everyone, especially since it was the first year back in person after a year of lockdown due to COVID-19,” shares Erika Zillmer, a senior at North Stafford High School. Reflecting on her high school experience, Erika notes how the pandemic profoundly affected her. “If it hadn’t been for the pandemic, I might have developed a better work ethic, been less of a procrastinator, and been more extroverted.”

Sophomore year was particularly difficult for Erika. “I lost interest in my work, my future, and my friendships. My grades suffered, and I found myself surrounded by

© Best Version Media

negative influences,” she admits. But by the end of the year, Erika recognized the need for change. “I distanced myself from bad influences, reconnected with true friends, rebuilt my morals, avoided drama, and found solace in my faith.”

Junior year became a turning point for Erika, teaching her the importance of resilience and hard work. Entering her senior year, she felt prepared for the challenges ahead. “Reflecting on my high school experience, I’ve learned several key lessons that I will carry with me: be mindful of friendships, prioritize yourself, find positive motivation, maintain a good environment, value time, live in the moment, and build a relationship with God.”

High school is not only a time for academic growth but also for discovering passions and future career paths. North Stafford offers a wide range of CTE (Career and Technical Education) classes, allowing students to explore different fields and even earn certifications in areas like cosmetology and nursing.

“I didn’t have a clear direction until junior year,” Erika shares. “My main aspiration is to work in trauma care. In summary, high school

has been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and learning from mistakes. I’m excited to pursue my goal of working in trauma care.”

For other students, their goals have shifted throughout their high school years. “As a freshman, I wanted to go to law school after high school, but now I plan on becoming an ultrasound tech,” says Rayne Tramun, a junior at North Stafford.

Moanna Romulus, a CGS senior, shares her advice for those planning to attend college: “The biggest advice I can give is understanding that if your path is college, you need to be aware of the different ways they measure you.” Moanna admits that the pressure from teachers and peers weighed heavily on her and impacted her experience. “I didn’t necessarily mess around, but I do wish I took it more seriously. As of now, my goal is to be good enough for the college I want to attend.”

As seniors begin applying to colleges this October, the emotions in the air are mixed. Some students are nervously awaiting acceptance letters, while others are confidently moving forward. This month marks the end of the first quarter of the school year, and while upperclassmen focus on excelling academically, some underclassmen are simply looking forward to the holidays.

For many seniors, like Miyah Samuels, the excitement of graduation has waned over time. “Freshman year, I was super excited to see how the moments leading up to graduation would be. But as time got closer, I got less and less excited,” Miyah shares.

A highly involved student, Miyah participated in sports, clubs, student council, and formed strong bonds with teachers and friends. Despite this, the anticipation for graduation has faded. Now, instead of eagerly awaiting new high school memories, Miyah is looking forward to the experiences college will bring.

The road to graduation is different for everyone. It’s filled with highs and lows, achievements and setbacks, but the most important lesson is that with grit, determination, and a focus on personal growth, every student can reach their destination. No matter how the journey looks, North Stafford’s students are proving that they have what it takes to succeed.

Wine & Design is the perfect place to unwind and have fun. We offer a range of affordable private and public paint and sip parties for all ages, groups and talents. From girls nights out to birthday parties, work events to date nights, Wine & Design has you covered.

Chicken Minestrone Soup

from Karie’s Kitchen

INGREDIENTS

Small roasting chicken

• A large pot filled with water 2/3 full

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

• 2 tablespoons of fresh, minced garlic

• 1 cup fresh, chopped parsley

• 1 finely chopped sweet onion

• 2 cups chopped celery

• 2 cups sliced baby carrots

• 2 tablespoons Orrington Farms broth base chicken powder

2 tablespoons Premium Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base

• 3 cans diced tomatoes (do not strain)

• 2 cups diced zucchini (yellow and green)

• 3 cups baby spinach

• 1/4 cup parmesan cheese 1/4 cup Romano cheese

• 1 can of cooked, strained cannellini beans

• 1 pound baby pasta shells

• 1/4 stick of butter

Variation: add a cup of diced butternut squash for a fall twist.

I cook this in my kitchen in Old World Italian style with few measuring tools. Use this recipe as a guide and let your tastebuds lead you to the amounts that are “just right.” This will yield a very generous pot of hearty soup, so gather friends or place in mason jars to spread some fall cheer.

DIRECTIONS

1. Thoroughly rinse a roasting chicken, pull out the gizzards and neck, and place in a large pot.

2. Fill the large pot with enough water to boil the roasting chicken (about 2/3 full), boil, and let the chicken cook thoroughly.

3. Set aside to let cool. Keep the broth; this will be your base for the soup. Carefully remove the chicken and cool it; carefully remove the bones that may remain in the pot.

4. Add Orrington Farms broth base chicken powder and Premium Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base to the pot with chicken and broth. Add enough water to regain the volume lost in the boiling process.

5. In a separate pan, sauté olive oil, minced garlic, chopped parsley, sweet onion, chopped celery, and sliced baby carrots. Then add salt and black pepper. Set this aside.

6. Bring the pot with the chicken base broth to a gentle boil and add the diced tomatoes, zucchini, and spinach (and butternut squash if following the fall recipe). Cook at a gentle boil or simmer until the vegetables are softened.

7. While the vegetables are cooking in the soup pot, boil another small pot of water and cook the pasta shells. Strain, add butter, and sprinkle with salt. Set aside.

8. When the chicken is cool enough to touch, peel and dice it, and set it back in the pot with the broth and vegetables. Strain the cannellini beans and add them. Stir in the grated parmesan and Romano cheeses.

9. Once all the ingredients are mixed together, simmer the soup to marry all the flavors.

10. Finally, add the cooked pasta shells, or leave them on the side and add them to the soup before serving.

STEP UP YOUR STAIRCASE

Steps are a necessity as well as an architectural art. Staircases come in all shapes and sizes, including spiral, straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, winder, curved, split, ladder, and cantilever. They may be a passageway from floor to floor or a cascading embellishment ascending in the center of a room. How can a homeowner take their existing staircase to the next level?

Go from hard surface to carpet. This can done in a few ways. First, add a runner to the existing hardwood steps. Decorative runners add a softer step and are a great way to retain the warm look of a wood staircase while adding cushion, color, and design. You could also completely cover the steps with a new pad and carpet. Homeowners with young children and elderly family members go this route because of safety. The carpet can be installed in a cap-and-band (Hollywood) or waterfall style.

Sand and refinish hardwood. When dealing with a flight that needs refinishing, many factors come into play: color matching, dust, inconvenience, and downtime. Refinishing can be a cost-effective way to upgrade. Matching existing wood takes skill. One must consider factors such as wood age, sun bleaching, wood species, and geographical regions. This is where experience matters.

Choose a hard surface stair transformation. Installations expert and Operations Manager at NK Floors, Joe Lewis, skillfully explains the process. “We remove the old carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip. Next, we remove any squeaks and address other concerns about the structural integrity of the stairs. The treads and risers are then carefully cut, beginning from the bottom up, riser then tread. Once that process is complete, the treads and risers are attached with glue and nails and are caulked. Finally, the skirt boards are painted. LVP treads are usually “walk ready” in a few hours, and hardwood treads in four to six hours. I recommend using painted risers for LVP and oak treads for a brighter set of stairs.”

Replace spindles and railing systems. When altering open stairs, the railing system may need to be removed. This is an excellent time to upgrade your balusters or spindles. Replacing wood spindles with low-profile iron rods adds a trendy look. You may also switch from a vertical to a horizontal orientation.

When upgrading steps, the possibilities are endless. Choose your design, select experienced installers, and use superior products. Your results will be a look that lasts and elevates your space.

BRAKES FOR BREASTS:

HOW AFFORDABLE AUTOMOTIVE AND BRADFORD JENNER ARE DRIVING CHANGE

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for Bradford Jenner, owner of Affordable Automotive, it’s an opportunity to merge his passion for cars with a cause that hits close to home. Through the Brakes for Breasts campaign, Jenner and his team are not only offering essential vehicle services but they are also raising crucial funds for an innovative breast cancer vaccine trial.

Founded in 2011, Brakes for Breasts brings together independent auto repair shops across the country to support research for a preventive breast cancer vaccine. Affordable Automotive is one of the many businesses involved in this campaign, and for the entire month of October, they are offering free brake pads to customers who bring their vehicles in for brake service. In return, the shop donates 10% of the brake job to the Brakes for Breasts campaign, contributing to the ongoing research aimed at eradicating breast cancer.

“We have helped generate over $6,000 over the past five years, and my goal this year is to donate another $6,000 or more,” said Jenner. Supporting the breast cancer vaccine trial is something Jenner and Affordable Automotive are proud to do. “Not only do we provide a valuable service to our customers, but we also get to contribute to groundbreaking research that could change the future of breast cancer treatment.”

What makes the Brakes for Breasts initiative so impactful is its dual benefit. Customers receive free brake pads—a tangible financial relief for vehicle maintenance—while Affordable Automotive makes a donation toward the vaccine trial. The vaccine, currently in clinical trials, is designed to target a protein that fuels the growth of breast cancer cells, with the potential to prevent the disease altogether.

Jenner’s involvement in Brakes for Breasts is personal. It’s hard to find anyone that hasn’t been affected by breast cancer.

“It runs in my family,” he shared, “but thankfully, no one close to me has had to deal with it directly. I’ve been supporting this campaign for the past five years because I believe in the cause and the vaccine’s potential for good.” As the Brakes for Breasts nonprofit organization highlights, “Prevention is the cure,” and while treatment for breast cancer is more advanced and effective than it’s ever been, the group raises the great question: “Why wait until it happens to treat it? Let’s stop it before it happens.”

Jenner also highlighted more of what he loves about the nonprofit. “This group was started by two women, Laura Frank and Leigh Anne Best, who own automotive repair shops, and women are a huge part of my own shop,” Jenner said.

“I really like that all the proceeds go directly to funding research for the vaccine, not to pay a large staff or the founders. While organizations like the Susan G. Komen Foundation have certainly made an impact, very little of their funds actually go toward research.”

Since its inception, Brakes for Breasts has raised over $1.8 million, all of which directly supports the research led by Dr. Vincent Tuohy at the Cleveland Clinic. Jenner and his team at Affordable Automotive are honored to be part of this national effort.

“Knowing that we’re contributing to something as life-changing as a breast cancer vaccine is incredibly rewarding,” Jenner says. “It’s a small step in the right direction, but it’s one we can take together as a community.”

For Jenner, October isn’t just about free brake pads— it’s about making a lasting impact. “Women are a huge part of our business,” he emphasized. “We want to do our part to give back to them and support research that could potentially save lives. It’s not just about cars; it’s about driving progress in the fight against breast cancer.”

With this commitment, Affordable Automotive and Bradford Jenner are not just fixing cars—they’re helping to fix a future where breast cancer may no longer exist.
