When you first meet Hillary White, you first notice how bright her eyes sparkle. Her stare shows strength, joy, love, and a triumphant glare. The stare of someone given severe life challenges yet refused to let anger win. The Beginning Hillary (50) and Jason (51) met on the first day of freshman-year college orientation. They somehow sat next to each other, and the rest was history. It was a connection at first sight. Hillary would go on and graduate with a degree in Biology. Jason had other plans for his path. After a year and a half at college, he decided his time would be served in the Air Force. Six days after Hillary graduated college, with all their friends and family gathered, they married. They then headed off to start their lives together as a military family. Jason served in the Air Force for 21 years. Throughout those years, Hillary learned to adapt and overcome job obstacles, from moving from duty station to duty station. They would go through seven duty stations nationwide before Jason retired in Virginia. While in the military, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Park University and a Master’s in Public Administration from Norwich University. Together, they faced the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Love Through a Phone Call It is usually during a stressful time in the military lifestyle when the most unexpected blessings can come. For Hillary and Jason, that moment came with an unexpected phone call asking if they would be ready to adopt a baby. At this time, they knew they could not have a child of their own and saw this as a sign that without knowing what being a parent entails, to welcome and love this baby into their home. So they said yes. They were moving from Hawaii to Spokane, yet they found a way to get what was needed from social workers and the legal team to welcome their baby home. Hillary got the call, “The birth mom is in labor.” She immediately booked her flight to take care across the States so that she could meet her son. In the quiet embrace of a hospital room, Hillary’s heart fluttered with anticipation, hands trembling with excitement and nervousness. As the door swung open, a cradled tiny bundle wrapped in a soft blanket—a newborn baby boy, Andrew, was welcomed into the loving arms of his adoptive mother. In the beautiful chaos of meeting their new baby, Jason had to stay behind because their household goods had just arrived in Spokane from Hawaii. As soon as the last item was signed for, Jason was on a flight to meet his son. In the following days, sleepless nights became a symphony of lullabies and murmurs as Hillary and Jason marveled at the beautiful, life-altering responsibility that had entered their world. Each diaper change, every coo and giggle, became a celebration of the unique journey they were about to embark on together. Unbroken Hillary’s life took an unexpected turn when a routine medical procedure went awry due to an unfortunate medical malpractice case.

© Best Version Media Instead of succumbing to despair, she embarked on a courageous journey of resilience and determination. Faced with physical and emotional challenges, Hillary sought justice for the negligence that had altered the course of her life. She navigated the legal complexities with unwavering strength, standing up against the system that had failed her. Hillary underwent numerous corrective surgeries and rehabilitation, displaying an extraordinary spirit that inspired those around her. Though wheelchair-bound, Hillary says she has forgiven the events that led her to this moment. In those moments, she saw the pillar of strength and support her husband offered, especially as he was recalled from Iraq to aid her. Never did she feel like she was alone. Home is Where the Military Takes Us Though Hillary and Jason are native Kentuckians, the Liberty Knolls Neighborhood is now their home. Andrew is a Colonial Forge High School sophomore and part of the cross-country team. He also plays basketball with Stafford Parks and Rec. He is also very close to becoming an Eagle Scout! Go, Andrew! Hillary is part of the executive board of the PTSO for Colonial Forge High School and is part of the Scout Committee. When Hillary isn’t spending time with their family dog, Abigail Addams, an 8-and-a-half-year-old French Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix, she loves to work on puzzles and crotchets.

Liberty Knolls exudes a timeless appeal, blending modern comforts and a close-knit atmosphere. However, it was the accessibility of the homes that drew Hillary and Jason in. Their ranch-style home made it easy to add features like wheelchair ramps, wider doorways, and adapted bathroom facilities to enhance mobility and give Hillary the independence to maintain an active and self-reliant lifestyle. Independence is what Hillary had fought for during her recovery time. She says, “I’m independent because I am a survivor.” Liberty Knolls is a neighborhood for all, and Hillary loves the community she has built. Hillary loves how close their neighbors are. They are thoughtful, caring, fun, and so inviting. Whether enjoying a stroll down its picturesque sidewalks or gathering for community events, living in Liberty Knolls has been a refreshing experience for the White family. There are many moments where Hillary could have quit. Instead, she forgave and let go of that anger. There are so many lessons to learn from her. After an afternoon over lunch listening to her story, I’ve left inspired. Hillary’s journey reminds us that the human spirit is unbreakable and that we can rise, overcome, and truly live even in the face of life-altering circumstances.

Are You Sticking to Your Routines? Work/Productivity Routine: Set work hours: If possible, establish regular working hours to create a sense of structure. Prioritize tasks: Create a to-do list and prioritize tasks to stay organized and focused. It is now February, the second month of the New Year! How are those resolutions going? Are we still drinking that gallon of water? Checking in the gym? Cooking at home instead of takeout? Establishing consistent routines is not only beneficial for your everyday life, but it is the foundation of a long-term goal. Many years ago, I read the speech-turned book, “Make Your Bed,” by Admiral William H. McRaven. This powerful speech summarizes how you can change yourself and, in turn, impact the world by setting simple routines.

Mindfulness and Relaxation: Mindfulness practice: Incorporate mindfulness or meditation into your daily routine for mental well-being. Reading or hobbies: Set aside time for activities you enjoy, such as reading, hobbies, or other forms of relaxation. (I just finished the Throne of Glass series, highly recommend) Social and Family Time: Regular family time: Plan and schedule regular family or social activities to maintain connections. (Check out our calendar of events!)

Making my bed every morning has become a therapeutic routine in my household. Coming in and out of my bedroom or from a long day away to a beautifully made bed does change my mood. It reminds me that no matter what kind of day I had, there is this small accomplishment in my own home that I get to stare at.

Quality time: Ensure that you spend quality time with loved ones regularly.

Here’s a small checklist of some daily routines to enhance your year. Morning Routine: Wake up early: Start your day consistently each morning to establish a routine. Hydrate: Begin your day by drinking a glass of water to rehydrate your body. xercise: Incorporate physical activity, whethE er a short workout, stretching, or a morning walk. I have made it a goal to get on the bike for at least 20 minutes daily.

Reflection and Goal Setting: Daily reflection: Take a few minutes each day to reflect on your achievements and plan for the next day. Weekly goal setting: Set achievable weekly goals to keep yourself motivated and focused.

Mealtime Routine: Regular meals: Aim for consistent meal times to regulate your metabolism. Balanced nutrition: Include a mix of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains in your meals.

Digital Detox: Scheduled breaks from screens: Incorporate periods without electronic devices to reduce screen time. Working from home could be a challenge, so I give myself working hours just like I would if I were in an office. After work hours are a no-go, family takes priority. Bedtime screen-free: Avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime to improve sleep quality.

but Make it Pink! Every Peruvian reading this might gasp at the indignation that I have turned the traditional Pisco Sour pink! It was a worthy experiment and perfect to celebrate Valentine’s day with your significant other or your gal pals.

Crust: Combine and cut in the following ingredients with a pastry blender until crumbled. • 2/3 cup butter-flavor shortening • 1 3/4 cups flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 cups grated cheese Add 7-9 tablespoons of ice water. Using your hands, knead until dough forms a ball. Divide the dough in half and place half the dough between wax paper. Roll it out, then roll out the second half using the same method. Keep the dough in the wax paper and refrigerate while you prepare the filling. Filling: 2 or 3 chicken breasts, fully cooked in a crockpot. I sprinkle chicken breasts with 2 tablespoons of chicken bouillon and some minced fresh onion, then cover with water and cook. You will want to cook the chicken ahead of time. Add cooked chicken to the following ingredients.

Ingredients • 3 oz of your favorite Pisco • 1 oz lavender syrup • 1 oz lime juice • 1 egg white • Sprigs of lavender Instructions 1. Put your pisco, lavender syrup, lime juice, and egg white into your shaker. 2. Shake 3. Shake until you see some severe froth 4. *We use a blender in our home. However, it is completely optional and can get the results with a shaker. It will just take a little longer. 5. Let the drink settle, and then pour. 6. Garnish with a sprig of lavender. 7. Enjoy! To assemble, line the bottom and sides of a pie dish with dough, removing the wax paper. Poke holes in the bottom crust using a fork. Pour in the filling and place the second pie crust on the top. Pinch the crust together and cut vent holes in the top. Beat an egg, mix it with a little water, and brush over the top of the pie crust, sprinkling with coarse salt. Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until the crust is golden brown.

This recently re-peaked my interest as my two beloved dogs had their annual check-up. As I voiced my concerns about starting preventive measures for hip issues common in German Sheperds, my veterinarian reminded me that she does acupuncture for pets. Struggling with excruciating pain in my right shoulder, as a single mom and waitress without health insurance, seeking relief without accruing medical bills became my mission. Within 24 hours, I found a local therapist willing to see me. Affording only a 30-minute session priced at $50 in 2002, the prospect of being pain-free outweighed the cost. RARE, BUT EVERYWHERE: A SPOTLIGHT ON LOUIE’S HUWE

Mothers are used to seeing a need and filling it. For most mothers, however, the need is less drastic than it is for Elizabeth Coulter. Her son, Louie, has a unique genetic mutation, called HUWE-1. Upon receiving the diagnosis and looking for help, Elizabeth quickly learned there was none. Well, none that focused on her son’s particular mutation. Thus, Louie’s HUWE was born. A Wave of Diagnoses and the Birth of an Organization Louie’s story began in 2012 when he was born with a myriad of health challenges. “We found out soon after his birth that there was something wrong,” Elizabeth explained. “He had trouble breathing and was not moving his arms and legs.” After months of genetic tests and no definitive answers, the Coulters moved to Baltimore to try Johns Hopkins. After a few appointments, they finally had their answer: a HUWE-1 variation. The subsequent years brought a cascade of diagnoses, including hypotonia, slow growth, autism, cortical visual impairment, and epilepsy. “Every year has brought a new diagnosis,” Elizabeth explained. After Louie’s seizures became unbearable in 2021, with 54 different seizures after he was admitted at Johns Hopkins, Coulter had a pivotal conversation with Dr. Barañano, Louie’s neurogeneticist. Elizabeth asked the doctor how to cure him. Her response: “Short of making a drug, there is nothing you can do.” Resolutely, Elizabeth told the doctor, “I’ll fund the cure if you can help find the researcher.” Coulter filed for nonprofit status and emailed a few moms who were involved with the HUWE-1 Facebook group, which included families from all over the world. The moms all agreed to help. “With that, Louie’s HUWE was born.” The Road to a Cure Through Elizabeth’s unwavering commitment, determination, and passion, she has formed the nonprofit organization, which dedicates itself to raising awareness and funds for children affected by the HUWE-1 gene mutation. This genetic anomaly manifests itself in various ways, causing epilepsy, autism, growth problems and delays, muscular issues, and more.

The group has grown to include a dozen dedicated moms, all working tirelessly towards finding a cure. Currently, the organization aims to raise $250,000 for a drug trial at Seattle Children’s Hospital, focusing on alleviating epilepsy and the various other maladies caused by the genetic mutation. Over the last two years, they’ve raised $100,000, but they remain a ways away from their goal. Rare, But Everywhere What is profoundly different about Louie’s HUWE is that it is the only organization of its kind and is recognized globally. “We want to help every child around the globe with HUWE-1, no matter how severe their variation or how far they are,” Elizabeth said. “Rare But Everywhere” is the organization’s philosophy, reflecting their commitment to aiding every child globally affected by HUWE-1, regardless of the severity of their condition or geographical location. The organization seeks to provide hope and support to families facing the challenges of this rare genetic mutation. And they’re off to a great start. What sets Louie’s HUWE apart is their remarkable commitment to ensuring that every penny raised goes directly towards finding a cure (less than 1% is allocated to overhead costs), unique in an era where administrative costs can often consume a significant portion of funds.

HEROES SPOTLIGHT

1st SGT, UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RETIRED, KHANH NGUYEN

Meet 1st Sgt, United States Marine Corps Retired, Khanh Nguyen Khanh was born and raised in the “Air Capital of the World,” Wichita, Kansas, and is the youngest of 10 children. His father was a former South Vietnamese Air Force Imaging Analyst and came to America in 1975 after the war. His mom and the rest of the family fled communist-controlled Vietnam in 1982 and made it to America in September 1983. In the 80s and early 90s, his family became the main points of contact and sponsors, of other Vietnamese refugees who would make Kansas their new home. He grew up watching his family doing goodwill for their community, hosting gatherings at their house for socials or evening rosaries, and handing out toys to children during the holidays. He can confidently state that his family played a big part in developing the Vietnamese community in the Wichita area when he was growing up. His love of soccer ended up with an athletic scholarship to college before enlisting in the Marine Corps. He is married to the fabulous Mrs. Louie Anne Batac-Nguyen, of Capital Sake LLC, and they have two wonderful daughters. The one thing about Khanh is that he will often give unsolicited advice/ recommendations, and life lessons, to help people with their current circumstances. When he gives a speech, he commands the room. A trait he picked up while serving as a Drill Instructor on Marine Corps Depot San Diego.

How does your family feel about serving? “They are proud. I love that my daughters mimic me whenever they see me in uniform doing my thing and how my wife supports me in what I am doing.” What is your favorite part of your neighborhood? “We have some very enthusiastic people who love to make a difference in our neighborhood and our community, from hosting field meets, volunteer basketball coaching, decorating their houses for the holidays for everyone to enjoy, or just lending a helping hand, our neighborhood isn’t perfect, but it’s ours. Our home is here, and we just love it. Hi neighbors!” After 20 years in the Marine Corps, he will continue to serve by focusing on community engagement while balancing family life. Colonial Forge High School Highlights Allie Medina is a Colonial Forge junior and editor of their school newspaper, Talon Online News. Outside of writing, she plays for the Varsity soccer team. She also is co-founder and vice president of Forge’s Female Empowerment Club, which works to provide a platform for women-based acts of service.

Colonial Forge’s Freshman Orientation Night Bridges the Gap for New Students One of the most intimidating parts of early life is that first year of high school, but one of the things that can help ease the nerves is Colonial Forge’s freshman orientation night, which was hosted on Thursday. Freshman orientation is a pivotal experience for new students as they embark on their journey through high school education. It serves as an introduction to the environment of Forge, aiming to ease the transition from middle school to high school. Current eighth graders planning on attending Colonial Forge next year were welcomed in for the opportunity to tour the school and look at some of the clubs they will be able to join next year. Tables were set up in the cafeteria, which allowed numerous athletic teams and various extracurriculars to promote their activities and encourage people to join. Walking in, the Colonial Forge Cheer team lined the halls, giving a warm welcome to incoming freshmen and their families. After the new students were invited to an assembly in the auditorium, giving the newcomers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with some of the key points of academic life at Colonial Forge.

It provides a sense of assurance that they aren’t just joining a school, but a community where they can learn and create friendships.

After the tour, the rising freshmen were able to walk around and speak to the leaders of clubs offered at Colonial Forge.

Throughout the orientation, a range of topics are covered: an overview of requirements, guidance on course selection, and introductions to some of the counseling staff.

The goal is to equip freshmen with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the next four years. Beyond academics, freshman orientation emphasizes the importance of involvement in the school community through extracurricular activities. Students are introduced to clubs, organizations, and sports teams, encouraging them to explore their interests outside the classroom. These experiences not only enrich their student experience but also help them build lasting friendships and connections that extend beyond graduation. A highlight of freshman orientation is the tour. Guided by enthusiastic students, newcomers get acquainted with the layout of the school, discovering key locations such as the library. Navigating the school on their first day will be less daunting as students gain familiarity with their surroundings, contributing to a smoother transition into high school life.

Many students and parents had questions about the activities done inside each individual club and what their mission was. “I had a lot of fun answering questions. We got to talk about what our club means to us and kind of brag about what we do and what we stand for. We got a lot of sign-ups which is great, and we even got people in higher grades interested, that didn’t know exactly what the club was,” Emily Hicks (‘25), president of the Female Empowerment Club. As freshman orientation drew to a close, students left with more than just information— they now carry a sense of belonging, knowledge, and maybe even some newfound friends. The experience sets the foundation for a successful and fulfilling high school journey, helping students navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

North Stafford High School Highlights Nora Ahmad, currently in her junior year at North Stafford High School, is involved with the school’s DECA Club and the Book Buddy program. She harbors a strong interest in literature, journalism, business, and writing. Nora aspires to achieve her dream of becoming a published author one day.

North Stafford High School’s Literacy Committee Sparks a Love for Reading This year, North Stafford High School is starting up our Literacy Committee led by Kimberly Andros, the Literacy Coach here at NSHS. The Literacy Committee is a yearlong club designed to help improve literacy amongst North Stafford High School students. North Nation prides itself on its dedication and determination to improve literacy skills by providing multiple opportunities within the committee, such as the book club and our book buddies program, also led by Ms. Andros. The Literacy Committee dedicates itself to making reading fun. They call it ¨Books Without Boundaries¨. During the month of Hanukkah (December), they recognized many Jewish authors and famous stories. They also did the same during Thanksgiving by recognizing the first Thanksgiving, the indigenous people of America, and their traditions. North Stafford Students who have joined such committees for North in the past have said they saw significant improvements in their literacy skills and performance in their English classes. Most students who join the Literacy Committee develop a fondness for reading or already have a strong liking for reading and are looking for a place to express this enjoyment. Moving forward, the Literacy Committee is also a great way for fellow book lovers to meet new people who also enjoy reading and talking about books. Our Literacy Committee can also help students find a new enjoyment and passion for reading and writing by ensuring that they enjoy what they are doing when exercising their reading and writing skills. The literacy initiative has five featured books each semester, book clubs, and challenges, and you can even win prizes. The literacy initiative starts during Wolverine Hour in the library, which is a considerate and great way for all students to participate during school hours. If you are a North Stafford student who loves reading or if you’re looking to improve your literacy, I’d be sure to check it out.

Toilet Paper Gnome Enjoy this fun activity based on the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed. Directions: Step 1. Paint the outside of your toilet paper roll using a paint brush and your choice of paint. Step 2. While the toilet paper roll is drying, cut a few strands of white yarn making sure they are 2-3 inches. Step 3. Next, take a colored sheet of construction paper and roll from the corner inwards to create a cone shape. Tape the cone shut and cut off the remaining paper. Step 4. Touch your toilet paper roll and make sure it is dry. If it is, take your paper cone and place it on one end of the toilet paper roll covering the opening. The cone will be your gnome’s hat. Craft Materials (makes one): • • • •

1 Toilet paper roll 1 Nickel sized wooden bead White yarn Colored pompoms

Step 5. At the brim of the hat, take your wooden bead and hot glue it right where the hat ends on the toilet paper roll. Step 6. Under your wooden bead, take your strands of yarn and hot glue them directly under the nose. You can spread them out or clump them together depending on how you like the beard. Step 7. Decorate your hat however you like. You can add pompoms, stickers, or even just your own drawings. Step 8. Lastly, glue the hat on your gnome.
