Welcome to the December Issue of Neighbors of Courthouse!
As the holiday season wraps us in its warm embrace, we’re reminded of the stories and connections that make Stafford such a remarkable place to call home. This month, we’re delighted to feature Lauren and Rich Beland, a family whose journey beautifully illustrates the deep-rooted sense of community that defines our town. From meeting as teenagers at Colonial Forge High School to raising their three children in the very place where their own story began, the Belands are woven into the fabric of Stafford’s past, present, and future.
The holiday season is also a time for giving back, and this issue includes some tips for making your charitable contributions meaningful. One organization we’re spotlighting is Saving Smiles, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support to children with cancer. Whether through monetary donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, there are so many ways to support causes like this one that truly make a difference.
We’re also excited to share the latest highlights from North Stafford and Colonial Forge, introduce Dr. Z at Stafford Smile Design, and much more!
As you celebrate the holidays, we encourage you to pause and appreciate the love and generosity that fill our lives during this special time of year. Together, let’s create memories and moments that will carry us into a bright and hopeful new year.
Wishing you a season filled with joy, connection, and the magic of community! Happy reading, neighbors!

Pilates Can Work for You Too

Thinking of trying Pilates? Whether you are super fit or recovering from an injury, Pilates is good for EVERY Body. At Club Pilates Stafford, our members come in all shapes, sizes, ages, backgrounds and fitness experience. Read these testimonials below and decide if Pilates can benefit you!
Jessica S: I’m a military spouse, mom, and a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant who has recently started Pilates. Wow! I had hip pain for over a year that traditional workouts, stretching and even physical therapy wasn’t quite eliminating completely…until Pilates. The reformer machine adds a level you cannot replicate in any other setting. I have muscle flexibility and stability that I was unable to obtain by other methods and my hip pain is completely gone! Pilates has really leveled up my fitness regimen and wellness using a challenging but low impact / high result fitness approach.
Malinda V: After completing chemo for breast cancer, I was left depleted, mentally and physically. I noticed Club Pilates open in Stafford, so I signed up for the intro class and fell in love. It was exactly what I needed. Pilates has made me stronger, more confident, improved my posture and eased chronic back pain from an old injury. Club Pilates, you have changed my life!
Tanya V: I saw Club Pilates on Facebook and decided to do the intro class. I really enjoyed it and despite being nervous, decided to sign up.
I had been having some trouble with my hip and knee and in pain most of the time; I was having to go up the stairs one step at a time as I couldn’t lead on my right leg. As a nurse, I have seen too many times how easy it is to lose mobility as you age. I also educate patients on the importance of movement and the importance of exercise and strength training. It was finally time to take my own advice.
It has been one of the best decisions I have made! I can actually run up the stairs now and have significantly less pain. I have made Pilates a priority and can easily fit the classes into my schedule.
Darrell B: I’m a retired military guy and after taking Pilates classes for several months, I can honestly say it’s made huge positive improvements in my fitness - in particular, flexibility, strength, and aer-

obic stamina. As a man who was initially skeptical about Pilates, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the physical benefits I’ve experienced.
From the very first class, I felt I was on the right path. The instructors and equipment ensured I had very controlled movements strengthening all the critical core muscles needed for sports and activities. The exercises are very challenging yet incredibly rewarding, and I’ve noticed a marked increase in my overall strength, energy and posture. Pilates has helped me develop a deeper mind-body connection, and I’m more aware of my body’s movements and alignment.
The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, easy to talk with, and supportive while encouraging me

to push my limits. The camaraderie in the classes is fantastic, and I appreciate the positive atmosphere that motivates everyone to do their best. I highly recommend Club Pilates Stafford to anyone looking for a full-body workout.
Denise S: I have attended over 50 Club Pilates Stafford classes. I love everything about it: the knowledgeable and caring instructors, the helpful receptionists, the state-of-the-art equipment, and the perfect blend and variety of classes. My body has changed. My legs, arms, abs, and core are stronger, leaner, and toned. I love going there after work and try to go 7 days a week. Attending Club Pilates is the best decision to take care of my physical well-being.

The Belands’ Lifelong Connection to Stafford
By Mallory Hardgrove, Photos by Karen Presecan Photography & Courtesy of Lauren Beland
For Lauren and Rich Beland, Stafford isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place filled with memories, milestones, and a deep-rooted sense of community. From meeting as teenagers at Colonial Forge High School to raising three children in the same town they both grew up in, the Belands’ journey is woven into the fabric of Stafford.
Lauren and Rich’s story began when she was a freshman and he was a junior. Lauren recalls, “I had a crush on him. He was the pitcher for the CFHS Varsity baseball team.” After a game one night, Lauren gathered her courage and waited for him. They started talking, and, as Lauren puts it, “the rest is history!” This high school romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership that now includes three children and a host of shared dreams.
Today, Rich works as a budget analyst for the government, while Lauren, a teacher in Stafford County Public Schools, has dedicated 15 years to nurturing young minds. “I taught first grade and kindergarten at Rockhill Elementary, the same school I attended as a little girl,” she says. Now, she teaches kindergarten at Winding Creek Elementary, passing down her love for learning to a new generation. In addition to teaching, Lauren also channels her passion for dance by teaching at The Dance Spot.
The Belands’ three children—14-year-old Claire, 10-year-old Gabby, and 8-year-old Richie—are just as involved in the community as their parents. Claire has been dancing since she was two and has already made a name for herself, competing and winning national and regional dance titles. Recently, she was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society and is a state finalist in the 2024 Miss Virginia Junior Teen Pageant. “She’s been so focused and dedicated to her dance,” Lauren says with pride. “Watching her grow and succeed has been amazing.”
Gabby, also a competitive dancer with Claire at The Dance Spot, loves to spend her free time outdoors with friends, and fosters her creativity, art, and communication skills through her involvement with the Winding Creek Elementary School News Crew, Art Club, and Chorus. “She’s incredibly artistic,” mom beams.
Meanwhile, the youngest Beland, Richie, has followed in his father’s athletic footsteps. He plays on the U8 travel hockey team, with Rich serving as his coach. “Coaching Richie’s team has been a special bonding experience for them,” Lauren shares. “Seeing them on the ice together is such a joy.” HOMEGROWN

In addition to their careers and children’s activities, the Belands prioritize community involvement and giving back. Every holiday season, the family participates in the local angel tree program, where they pick out “angels” in need and shop for gifts to bring them some holiday cheer. “Our kids love picking angels and choosing gifts for them,” Lauren says. “It’s a small way for us to give back, but it means so much.”
Their involvement in the community doesn’t stop there. Each summer, their neighborhood, Woodlot Court, hosts an annual block party with a bounce house, food, and plenty of laughter. Lauren explains, “Our neighbors always look out for each other’s kids and homes. We love being a part of such a nice street.”
Their puppy, Toby, a 10-month-old Norwich Terrier, has also become part of the family’s story. “We surprised the kids with him for Christmas,” Lauren says. Toby recently starred as Toto in The Dance Spot’s production of *The Wizard of Oz*, a fitting role for the spirited little pup. “He’s truly become part of the family,” she laughs.

The Belands’ roots in Stafford run deep. Lauren’s connection to the area began when her father, an airline pilot for USAirways, moved the family to Stafford to be closer to Reagan National Airport. “I remember when 610 was just a single-lane road in both directions,” she reminisces. In addition to Rockhill Elementary, Lauren attended AG Wright Middle School and graduated from Colonial Forge High School in 2003.
“Our graduating class was ‘The First to Soar All Four,’” she says, referring to being the first class to attend all four years at the high school. Rich also moved to Stafford when he was six, graduating from Colonial Forge in 2001.
Their love for the area is rooted in the connections they’ve made. “What I enjoy most about this area are the people,” Lauren says. “Through the years, we’ve grown so close to friends that they’ve become family.”
Her childhood best friends, with whom she grew up dancing, now live on the same street, and their children have become inseparable. “Our families spend holidays together, celebrate special occasions, go on vacations… It really takes a village to raise kids, and I don’t know how we’d do it without them.”
The convenience of new amenities like Embrey Mill Town Center and the natural beauty of places like Government Island enriches their lives. “It’s been great having new stores and restaurants so close by,” she says. “It really helps with our busy schedules.” For outdoor adventures, they enjoy taking walks around their neighborhood and spending time at Government Island, appreciating its scenic trails and quiet atmosphere.
Traveling as a family is also a tradition. Every year, they embark on a family trip to explore different parts of the United States. This year, they visited Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where they rode horses in the mountains, attended a rodeo, hiked scenic trails, and went whitewater rafting. “We love to see new places and have those adventures together,” Lauren says. They also make annual trips to Disney World, their “happy place,” and relax at the Outer Banks with friends.
For the Beland children, these family trips provide a break from their busy schedules and a chance to make memories. This summer, Claire and Gabby traveled to Wildwood, New Jersey, to compete at the Dance Xplosion National Dance Competition. The family also enjoys trips to Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg to celebrate birthdays with friends.
Reflecting on their life in Stafford, Lauren and Rich feel fortunate to have built such a meaningful life in their hometown. Their commitment to each other, their children, and their community is evident in every story they share. As Lauren puts it, “Our village here in Stafford is so important to us. We’re lucky to live in a place where people really look out for each other.”
With a network of family, friends, and neighbors that spans decades, the Belands are more than just residents of Stafford—they are an extension of the community’s heart and soul. From high school sweethearts to parents and active community members, their story is one of love and commitment to the place they call home.

HOLIDAY-READY FLOORS © Best Version Media
The anticipation for the holidays is at its peak! The plans have been made. Christmas party dates are approaching, the food is catered, the decorations are perfect, and guests will soon arrive. But what about your floors? Are they holiday-ready? Don’t neglect this essential element when decorating with warmth and cozy vibes. Here is how your flooring can shine bright and create a place where you can build holiday memories to last a lifetime.
Be clean and neat. Nothing will quench holiday charm like an untidy floor. Our families and pets live on our floors, but it doesn’t have to look like we do. A clean, uncluttered area is the best space to create a welcoming environment for guests. First, move furniture and thoroughly vacuum. For dingy carpets, depending on the wear and stain level, opt to either have a professional clean or replace them with a high-traffic, pet-friendly remnant. For hardwoods, dust with a damp mop and clean with a wood-friendly cleaner like Bona. Avoid excess water, steam, or abrasive cleaners on wood, as it will cause damage over time and void the manufacturer’s warranty. Polish on hardwood is not recommended due to it complicating the refinishing process. For tile, avoid any cleaning products or tools that would stain or chip the tile or loosen the grout. A mild soap with water lifts most dirt and stains, or a professional tile and grout cleaner can be used with a sponge and grout brush. The key is to be consistent with cleaning before and after the holidays

Protect hard surfaces. With more traffic coming in and out of your home during this time of year, it is important to protect hardwood and vinyl from scratches. Opt to place mats at each entryway. Remember to place protective felt pads at the bottoms of chairs, couches, and furniture. During the holidays, furniture gets moved around more frequently, and you don’t want any lingering reminders of the festivities in the form of new scratches on your floors. Sweep the floor and wipe with a microfiber mop between meals and high traffic times of the day. Scuff marks can be buffed with a soft cloth, scrubbed with a damp sponge, and buffed dry.
Include seasonal area rugs. A warm, rich area carpet brings a new holiday look to your house. Color on the floor, especially on top of earthy hardwood and vinyl, adds depth and dimension while pulling in other holiday decor from the room. Not only will area rugs help preserve your floors during high-traffic gatherings, but they will also be inviting to the eye. Consider adding an area rug to the front foyer, kitchen, hallways, and living room. Placing non-slip pads beneath decorative rugs will help prevent sliding and ensure they stay in place.
With a bit of attention and care, your floors can be the unsung heroes of your holiday decor. Clean, protected, and adorned with seasonal touches, they’ll impress your guests and provide the perfect foundation for cherished holiday moments.

Stafford Smile Design Introduces Dr. Kiah Zaremba
Stafford Smile Design is a trusted dental practice offering comprehensive services to the community. Dr. Kiah Zaremba, an associate dentist with the practice for two years, is passionate about delivering routine and emergency dental care, including same-day crowns, implants, and Invisalign treatments.
“My philosophy as a dentist is to provide quality, conservative dental care,” Dr. Zaremba shares. “I strive to treat every patient to the best of my ability and give them the same care that I would give someone in my family.”
Dr. Zaremba’s journey into dentistry began at a young age, inspired by her childhood dentist, who made each visit enjoyable. During her college years at William and Mary, she joined Global Brigades and traveled to underserved communities in Panama and Honduras. “Assisting the dentist on these trips really solidified my choice to become a dentist,” she says. “Not only was the dentistry aspect fascinating, it was also very powerful to be able to help someone and give them a better quality of life by providing dental care.”
After earning her degree from Howard University’s dental school, Dr. Zaremba continued her training with a two-year general practice residency at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn. There, she learned from a team of seasoned professionals. “I’ve been really lucky to always have great mentors who inspire me in dentistry,” she recalls. “The attendings at NYU Langone modeled the

type of dentist I aspire to be—knowledgeable, personable, and caring.” Dr. Zaremba finds this same ethos at Stafford Smile Design in her work with Dr. Hughes. “I am fortunate enough to work with Dr. Hughes, who carries that same patient-centered philosophy,” she explains. “One of the things I enjoy most about my job is the people that I work with. We have a very down-toearth team who make the workday fun.”
Working in Stafford holds special meaning for Dr. Zaremba, as she’s serving in the community where she grew up. “After spending time working in New York City and Northern Virginia, I can truly say there is no place like home,” she shares. “Everyone I come across in Stafford is incredibly warm and kind.”
Dr. Zaremba’s favorite workdays at Stafford Smile Design involve food, whether it’s a holiday potluck or a Crumbl cookie taste test. The office also has a lovable Red Fox Lab named Ruby, who brings even more joy to their work environment. Outside of work, Dr. Zaremba enjoys taking tap dance classes at Amyclae Dance Academy and Pilates at Orofino Wellness. Recently married, she and her husband share a home with their three-year-old dog, Coco, who Dr. Zaremba calls “our pride and joy.”
With her commitment to quality care and love for the Stafford community, Dr. Zaremba brings a unique blend of expertise and heart to Stafford Smile Design. She and Dr. Hughers are dedicated to ensuring every patient feels genuinely cared for and valued, and their patient-centered approach is at the core of the practice.

SAVING SMILES: A MISSION TO BRIGHTEN LIVES BEYOND CANCER
In 2017, three passionate young dental professionals —Dr. Ronald Lowe, Dr. Joseph Meluni, and Dr. Lawrence Nguyen—came together with a simple yet powerful mission: to help pediatric cancer survivors get the dental care they desperately need. What began as a heartfelt initiative has since grown into Saving Smiles Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a life-changing impact on children across the nation.
Dr. Ronald Lowe, a Fredericksburg orthodontist and co-founder of the organization, recalls the driving force behind their efforts. “When a child is diagnosed with cancer, dental health becomes less of a priority,” he explains. “The family’s focus is survival, which is completely understandable. Our goal is to help educate and financially assist these families so they can get the dental care they absolutely need.”
Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can wreak havoc on a child’s oral health. From increased cavities to weakened tooth enamel, the long-term effects are often overlooked. Saving Smiles steps in to bridge this gap, working with families who may be struggling to afford dental care after a grueling battle with cancer. “We’ve helped dozens of kids since 2017,” Dr. Lowe shares, “whether it’s paying for their dental care, lifting their spirits during the holidays, or providing electric toothbrushes and education. This charity is truly for the kids.”
What makes Saving Smiles unique is its personal connection to the cause. Dr. Lowe’s journey into pediatric dental care began during his first year
of dental school, following the heartbreaking loss of a close friend to brain cancer. “Several years prior, my friend and teammate Michael Adenaike passed away from a rare form of brain cancer,” he recalls. “After seeing the emotional, physical, and financial toll cancer takes, I wanted to help in any way possible.”
This drive led him to partner with Dr. Meluni and Dr. Nguyen to launch Saving Smiles. Together, they have created a support system that not only helps children recover their smiles but also brings hope to their families during an incredibly difficult time. “We’ve met amazing families from New York, Michigan, Virginia, and even California,” Dr. Lowe says. “Hearing their stories and learning how we helped their kids has been a truly rewarding experience.”
In addition to working directly with families, Saving Smiles collaborates with other notable organizations such as the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, Jessa’s Quest, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation to expand their reach. “We’re so grateful for the partnerships we’ve built along the way,” Dr. Lowe says. “These organizations have been instrumental in identifying families who need our support.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Lowe is excited about future initiatives, including a charity golf match slated for 2025 to raise additional funds for the organization. “The support since I moved to Virginia has been amazing,” he shares. “If you feel moved by our cause, I urge you to reach out— we’re always looking for people to help.”

Despite the serious nature of their work, the Saving Smiles team approaches their mission with positivity and hope. Reflecting on their journey, Dr. Lowe finds inspiration in their beginnings. “We were really just kids ourselves when we started this foundation,” he laughs. “Two 22-year-olds and a 23-year-old saw something wrong and wanted to help. Now, seven years later, we’re all about 30 and still just as passionate about helping kids.”
Saving Smiles may have started as a small, grassroots effort, but its impact continues to grow, one smile at a time.

GIVING BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON:
TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR CHARITABLE DOLLARS COUNT
The holiday season is upon us, a time for gathering with family, reflecting on our blessings, and giving back to the community. Charitable gifting during this season is a powerful way to spread goodwill and support local organizations that are making a difference right here in Fredericksburg. Whether you’re a seasoned donor or new to the world of charitable giving, here are some tips for stretching your dollar to make the biggest impact.
Donate to Causes That Mean the Most to You
Start by considering the causes that resonate most deeply with you. When you give to organizations whose missions align with your passions, your donation feels more meaningful and has a lasting impact. For animal lovers, local rescues like the Fredericksburg SPCA work tirelessly to care for abandoned pets and find them loving homes. If supporting veterans is important to you, organizations like Leashes of Valor provide critical resources by pairing veterans with service dogs to help with PTSD and other challenges. Contributing to causes you’re passionate about creates a deeper connection and ensures your gift has personal significance.
Research Local Organizations
Consider supporting charities that focus on Fredericksburg and surrounding communities, as local nonprofits often operate on smaller budgets and rely heavily on local donations. For example, the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank provides food assistance to families in need, especially during the holiday season. Similarly, Loisann’s Hope House helps families facing homelessness by providing shelter, support, and resources to rebuild lives. Researching local organizations that align with your values ensures that your gift directly benefits the people in your community.
Donate Money Over Goods (When/If Possible)
Although donating physical goods like food, clothing, or toys can be meaningful, financial contributions often go much further. Monetary donations give organizations flexibility to use funds where they’re needed most, often allowing them to buy supplies in bulk or leverage discounts. For instance, instead of donating canned goods, a cash gift to the food bank can multiply in value, enabling them to provide more meals than what you’d spend at the store. If you still want to give physical items, check with the charity to see what’s in high demand.
Give Strategically with Matched Donations
During the holidays, many companies and organizations offer matched donations, effectively doubling (or even tripling) your contribution. Check with your employer to see if they have a matching gift program or find local businesses that run holiday campaigns to support local charities. For example, some companies in the area partner with charities to match every dollar donated by their customers, allowing you to increase the impact of your gift without additional cost.
Volunteer Your Time or Expertise
Charitable giving isn’t just about money—offering your time or expertise can be equally valuable. Many nonprofits rely on volunteers, especially during the holidays, when the need for extra hands grows. Reach out to local groups to ask if they need volunteers for holiday events or support with administrative tasks. Skilled volunteerism, such as assisting with marketing or organizing fundraising events, can also be invaluable, especially for smaller organizations with limited staff.

Spread Awareness
Raising awareness is a simple but effective way to support local organizations. Share the work of your favorite nonprofits on social media, host a small holiday gathering with a charitable theme, or even start a family tradition where loved ones donate to a cause instead of exchanging gifts. These gestures can inspire others to give and amplify the impact of local charities.
Remember Smaller, Lesser-Known Charities and Church and Community Drives
Large, well-known charities often receive a lot of attention and funding, while smaller ones sometimes go overlooked. Consider donating to lesser-known organizations that serve niche populations, like animal rescues or youth mentorship programs. Smaller nonprofits generally have fewer overhead costs, meaning that more of your donation will directly support programs and services. You can even give back by donating to a local church or community coat drive or food drive. Every little bit helps.
Giving back to the Fredericksburg community not only helps those in need but also strengthens the bonds we share as neighbors. Happy holidays, and thank you for making our community a better place to live and thrive.
There are plenty of organizations in our community that work tirelessly to improve the lives of residents in our own backyard. Here are just a few of the amazing organizations we’ve highlighted as a FXBG Neighbors team over the years:
• Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank
• S.E.R.V.E.- Stafford Emergency Relief through Volunteer Efforts
• Greater Rappahannock (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated
• Leashes of Valor
• Loisann’s Hope House
• Heart-Centered Academy
• Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

• Remy’s Reign
• The Bill Carroll Foundation
• Area 11 Special Olympics
• Cooking Autism, Inc.
• The Fairy Godmother Project

Forge’s Journey into Cooking and Healthy Living

Allie Medina is a Colonial Forge senior and editor of their school newspaper, Talon Online News. Outside of writing, she plays for the Varsity soccer team. She also is co-founder and vice president of Forge’s Female Empowerment Club, which works to provide a platform for women-based acts of service.
To Colonial Forge High School, it’s important that students gain the valuable life skills that they need when making the transition into adulthood. One of these skills includes the ability to make healthy choices for yourself. Forge’s Nutrition and Wellness class does just that. The class combines practical cooking with lessons on nutrition, fostering an engaging and hands-on environment.
The class is currently taught by Ms. Shine who shares her favorite part of teaching as the connection she is able to build between her and her students.
“It’s heartwarming to see them excited about trying new recipes and sharing their own culinary experiences,” she says. These moments usually occur due to the class’s cooking labs. Students can practice the culinary concepts they learn leading up to each lab, allowing them the opportunity to apply their skills real-time.
The hands-on component is one of the most beloved aspects of the class and particularly impactful. “The ability to cook and nourish oneself and one’s family is a fundamental life skill that is often overlooked in traditional education. It’s crucial to empower students with these skills early on,” Ms. Shine shares. Students are able to gain confidence in the kitchen when participating and learning how to prepare delicious meals. Having a reward when they’re done, their yummy creations, is a motivator to put in the work it takes to develop their culinary abilities.
The cooking labs are also a gateway for students to explore their creativity while also learning about healthy eating habits. Ms. Shine explains what she hopes students take away from her cooking lessons.

“While I’d love to see some of my students become renowned chefs, my primary goal is to instill a love for cooking and baking. I hope they find joy in the process, just as I do. I also hope that students have a better understanding of the nutritional values of different foods and how to make healthy choices.”
Ms. Shine’s favorite recipe, enjoyed by students as well, is homemade fried rice. “I love how simple it is and that you can customize it with ingredients that you enjoy.”
Tyler Garrison, a student in the class this year, shares his experience and the skills he’s cultivated so far. “I have learned the importance of proper nutrition and how eating right is important.” Among the various recipes made, Tyler’s favorite is by far the chocolate cupcakes. “Chocolate cupcakes are my favorite thing we’ve made.”
Students in the Nutritional Wellness class at Colonial Forge are clearly in good hands. With the class’s combination of cooking, nutritional education, and hands-on-experiences, students are developing skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

The Importance of Community at North Stafford

Nora Ahmad, a senior at North Stafford High School, is involved with the school’s DECA Club and the Book Buddy program. She harbors a strong interest in literature, journalism, business, and writing. Nora aspires to achieve her dream of becoming a published author one day.
As the year progresses at North Nation, we are continually reminded of the extraordinary communities that enrich our school. One such group is the Muslim Student Association (MSA), a club founded in 2021 and thriving ever since. The MSA has gained significant recognition for its annual Multicultural Fair, which showcases the diverse cultures represented within the community. Highlights of the event include a fashion show, performances by the North Nation Dance Team, and martial arts demonstrations.
“We organize various events throughout the school year, including community service projects, potlucks, and social gatherings,” says Bahar Malik, MSA spokesperson and member. “Some of our past activities include volunteering at mosques, making appreciation cards for bus drivers and cafeteria workers, and hosting bake sales to raise money for charity.”
The MSA extends a warm welcome to all students, regardless of background, and encourages anyone interested to join. The club’s Instagram page emphasizes its mission: “The Muslim Student Association was created to bring together people who share a passion for community engagement.”
The MSA meets twice a month on Thursdays, and membership is free. “We encourage members to participate in as many events as possible. Our focus is on inclusivity and ensuring that all members feel welcomed,” Bahar adds.
Communities
Across North Nation
This spirit of inclusivity and connection is mirrored across North Stafford’s many clubs and organizations, including the Fellowship for Christian Athletes, Asian Culture Club (ACC), Women in STEM, tutoring clubs, and more. At North Stafford, we understand that being part of a community can profoundly impact a student’s life. Communities aren’t limited to school clubs—they can be found in neighborhoods, families, and even among co-workers.
Despite the abundance of opportunities, feelings of loneliness and isolation are not uncommon, especially during the holiday season. At North, empathy is a core value. Students who feel out of place can always turn to one of our clubs, sports teams, or even classroom communities for support and belonging.
For those who prefer different types of engagement, our diverse class offerings provide another way to form meaningful connections. Programs such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, Graphic Imaging, Cabinet Making, and Auto Body repair allow students to connect through shared interests. These activities not only foster friendships but also help students build valuable relationships with their teachers. Such connections can prove instrumental for college applications, internships, and future careers.

Building Lifelong Skills and Healthy Habits
The communities at North Stafford also promote healthy behaviors and personal growth. Volunteer opportunities through clubs teach students the value of giving back, while shared activities help individuals discover their passions, develop communication skills, and form deeper connections.
Many teachers further enrich the school’s sense of community by hosting their own clubs or events. For example, Ms. Moss, the CNA instructor, leads HOSA (Healthcare Professionals of the Future), offering students a chance to explore healthcare careers, attend exciting events, and participate in symposiums.

A Unified North Nation Community is the heartbeat of North Nation. It’s evident at football, volleyball, and basketball games, as well as during musical performances and other school events. Being part of a community helps students feel a sense of belonging, motivating them to engage with school life fully—a vital component of achieving academic success and maintaining strong grades.
If you’re a student who hasn’t yet found your niche, consider exploring one of the many opportunities at North Stafford. There’s a place for everyone, and the connections you make here could last a lifetime.

When Is My Child Ready to Start School?

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader involved in the Rotary Club of Stafford and a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service Above Self.”
As parents, we are our children’s first teachers—whether we recognize it or not. When my family moved to Stafford, we quickly discovered that many of the local preschools had long waiting lists. Choosing the right preschool or elementary school for your child can feel as daunting as choosing a college. Will the school be a good fit? How can we be sure? The key is to start your research early and make informed decisions.
One minute, your child is an infant, and the next, they’re approaching kindergarten. But are they truly ready? How do you know when it’s the right time to start school? Should you choose a public or private school? What’s the age cutoff? The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) defines school readiness as: “School readiness describes the capabilities of children, their families, schools, and communities that best promote student success in kindergarten and beyond. Each component—children, families, schools, and communities—plays an essential role in developing school readiness. No one component can stand on its own.”
For more information, review the VDOE’s resources here:

As an education consultant with Sylvan Learning, I work with many families eager to ensure their child is ready for kindergarten or first grade. Some parents are told by teachers that their child should be reading by December of first grade. But readiness varies from child to child, and it’s important to recognize that every child develops at their own pace. I recommend reviewing the VDOE’s tips for families on preparing for kindergarten at the Virginia Early Learning Supports Webinar: https://tinyurl.com/5v6s4r9b.
As we count down the days to winter break, take a moment to reflect on your child’s next steps. The journey to elementary school should be both exciting and fun. Enjoy these precious moments—time passes quickly.

A Guide to Pluralizing Your Family Name for Holiday Cards
As the holiday season approaches, many families prepare to send out festive cards to friends and loved ones. One common question arises: how do you properly pluralize your family name?
As a former English teacher and self-proclaimed grammar nerd, I am here to save you time, mental aerobics, and help you sign-off on your holiday greeting cards. First rule of grammar nerd club: do NOT, under any circumstances, use an apostrophe. People using apostrophes, thinking it’s making their last name plural, drives me absolutely insane.
I cringe when I see it “in the wild”-- be it at a wedding, “Congrats to the Miller’s!” or one of those engraved military signs: “Home is wherever the Army sends us- The Mendez’s.” AHHHHHHHH! I want to scream.
This issue and the use of the Oxford comma WILL be the two hills I die on. See, even ending a sentence with a preposition there doesn’t bother me as much. To save yourself some trouble and potential embarrassment, look at the simple guide below.
The Basics: How to Pluralize Your Last Name
1. If your last name doesn’t end in S, X, Z, CH, or SH, simply add an -s to the end of your name.
Examples:
• The Smith family becomes The Smiths
• The Taylor family becomes The Taylors

2. If your last name ends in S, X, Z, CH, or SH, add an -es to the end of your name.
Examples:
• The Jones family becomes The Joneses
• The Fox family becomes The Foxes
• The Sanchez family becomes The Sanchezes
• The Finch family becomes The Finches
• The Marsh family becomes The Marshes
3. If your last name ends in a Y, the rules for regular pluralization don’t apply here!
Keep the Y and simply add -s
Examples:
• The Kennedy family becomes The Kennedys
• The Daly family becomes The Dalys
Again, because it bears repeating:
• Do not use an apostrophe to pluralize your last name under any circumstances. Your former English teachers will have a heart attack. Save lives, and do NOT use an apostrophe. Apostrophes are for possessives, not plurals!
Want an even easier way to do it?
If all else fails, if this is too big of a headache for you, or seeing “The Rodriguezes” makes you go cross-eyed, just say “family.”

Class dismissed! I hope you all have a fantastic holiday season. Enjoy spreading holiday cheer however you see fit. COMMUNITY BY MALLORY HARDGROVE

Senior Pet Holiday Guide: Cozy Comforts and Essentials for Well-Being
Engaging the Mind
The holiday season is all about making memories with loved ones—including our senior pets, who may need a little extra comfort as they age. Small changes in your pet’s environment and daily routine can bring them warmth, support, and joy. This winter, consider a few carefully selected gifts that cater to their changing needs, enhancing their comfort and well-being through the season and beyond.
Cozy Comfort
Start by giving your pet a comfortable resting place. Orthopedic memory foam pet beds are ideal for easing joint pain, and for giant breeds, a baby crib mattress can work wonders! If your pet feels the chill, consider a pet-safe heated blanket for soothing warmth. Alternatively, a cooling gel mat is ideal for pets that tend to overheat.
Enhanced Hygiene
Bond with your furry friend using a soft bristle brush to remove excess hair and mats while providing a gentle massage. At bathtime, place a yoga mat in the tub to prevent slips, and use waterless shampoo for convenient spot cleaning. Older cats can benefit from a zero-entry litter box to assist with mobility issues. You can easily make one at home by cutting out an entrance from a plastic storage bin. For pets experiencing incontinence, waterproof bed liners or incontinence pads help maintain a dry and comfortable sleeping environment.
Mobility Support
Maintaining mobility is key to a senior pet’s independence. The Help ‘Em Up Harness provides support for dogs when navigating stairs or getting in and out of vehicles. Dr. Buzby’s Toe Grips are another great option, offering traction on slippery floors by fitting onto your pet’s nails. Portable ramps and stairs make it easy for pets to reach furniture, so they can stay close by.
Keeping a senior pet mentally stimulated is just as important as physical comfort. Puzzle feeders turn mealtime into an engaging activity for both dogs and cats, while interactive toys keep their minds sharp without intense physical exertion. Cats will enjoy window perches or bird feeders for hours of sunny entertainment.
Soothing Anxiety

For pets that may feel anxious, particularly during holiday gatherings, a calming pheromone diffuser can help reduce stress and a Thunder Shirt anti-anxiety vest applies gentle pressure to help pets feel secure and swaddled. ElleVet CBD Calming Treats are also worth considering; but consult your vet before introducing any new supplements.
Pampering Extras

For pets who enjoy the outdoors but may need assistance, a pet stroller lets them enjoy fresh air without tiring them out. Don’t forget cozy winter coats, sweaters, and spending quality one-on-one time to pamper your furry friend.
As you select gifts for your senior companions this season, remember: it’s the “paw-sitive” moments we share that truly make the holidays bright. Wishing you and your pets a purr-fectly joyful season filled with warmth and tail wags!

Elevated food and water bowls are also beneficial for pets with stiff joints, making mealtime more comfortable. Omega-3 and joint supplements can be a tasty way to support joint health (consult your veterinarian for brand and dosing recommendations).
