TIMELESS BEAUTY OF DALTILE

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.
What do Leonardo da Vinci and this Italian girl have in common? With my Italian heritage, my heart has a special place for stylish tile and stone design. I was captivated when I recently interviewed a Daltile representative at the NK Floor showroom. Daltile is a 77-year-old company that started in Dallas, Texas, and is leading with innovation. They are in every business segment, including commercial, residential, industrial, and remodels. They are respected among builders and architects. Daltile products include tile, natural stone, granite, porcelain, glass, and metals for the interior and exterior. They also sell slabs for fabrication. They have so much to offer, from price-friendly to higher-end products. Daltile has a quality product for every stone passion.
So why choose tile? Tile is beautiful, and its style and color options are limitless for indoor and outdoor spaces. It is durable and stands the test of time. Tile is stainproof, scratchproof, waterproof, fire resistant, and easy to clean and maintain. Daltile products are environment friendly and include Microban® technology, which continuously fights the growth of up to 99% of bacteria on the surface. They have slip-proof technology for safety. By purchasing Daltile stone, you are acquiring your unique piece of the earth. Its color variance and one-of-a-kind
presence are what make it distinct. Ceramics and porcelain are more controlled, uniform, and can be replicated.
When you come into the NK Floors showroom to see our Daltile display, you will experience marble attaché, fabric, wood-looking tile, outdoor stone for nature showers, and color scheme mosaics for all appetites. We are knowledgeable about current design trends. This year coastal retreat, quiet luxury, modern rurality, retro revisited, and biophilic essence are hot looks for homes and businesses.
NK Floors is a Daltile dealer that will work with our consumers to design the space of their dreams. We create the room with the products you love. At the NK Floors showroom, our team will help coordinate all aspects of your design, whether it be a backsplash blending with paint, the kitchen floor complementing cabinets or a beautiful shower that melds with a trendy bathroom backsplash and vanity. We then help you envision your tile layout: diagonal, horizontal, vertical, staggered, or on a break-joint. Our installers know how to accommodate your design with skill. NK Floors tile installs include professional products and superior installation, with exemplary customer service from start to finish.

Leila Abel’s life story is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of loved ones. From overcoming personal hardships to building a successful career and giving back to her community, Leila’s journey is inspiring and heartwarming. Leila’s home is a bustling and dynamic place filled with love and activity. Her husband, Jeff, is a steady presence, providing unwavering support and companionship. Although their sons, Zach and Erik, are grown, they remain closely knit. Zach, who works at a local bank, moved back in with Leila and Jeff after buying a house with Erik in 2019, which the brothers rent out.
“We all get along swimmingly, so I don’t think he’s going anywhere. He is an awesome roommate,” Leila shared, reflecting the warmth and camaraderie that defines their family dynamic. Erik, currently serving overseas in the military, married Mackenzie in June 2023. Though Erik is far away, Mackenzie stays with Leila and Jeff occasionally, adding to the lively household.
Leila’s journey to her current role as a software test lead for the Department of Defense (DoD) is just one example of her perseverance. Her brother, Gary Garrett II, was pivotal in recommending her to a government contracting company. Despite initial concerns about the distance she would need to commute, Leila was given an opportunity that set the stage for her career. “I had the greatest boss, Greg Gillette. While I worked for him, he allowed me the freedom to pursue job-related interests,” Leila recalled. This supportive environment enabled her to develop her skills.
Leila has never quite stopped developing and fostering her skills and education, and she’s worked incredibly hard for everything she has. After being kicked out of high school during her senior year, she earned her GED and, later, her high school diploma.
“Shortly after, I became divorced and a single mother,” she recounted. The struggles were immense, from moving annually to facing homelessness. “It’s very worrisome wondering how you’re going to feed your child and where you’re going to live,” she recalled. But Leila’s resilience shone through, guiding her through these challenges.

Completing her bachelor’s degree took 17 years, but it was a crucial step in securing a better future for her children.
“I wanted them to see that college was an option if they wanted to go that route. I wanted them to see that you persevere through bad times and that things can change,” Leila explained. She shared a poignant story from a challenging period when the economy forced her family to move and live in a small house without air conditioning. “Every night, I would clean the kitchen floor, and we would sleep in the kitchen on the linoleum floor because that was the coolest place to sleep. The house

heated up like a large oven,” she recounted. Despite these hardships, Leila’s determination to provide for her family never wavered.
Her brother, Gary Russell Garrett II, played a pivotal role in her life, giving her a stable place to live during her most challenging times. “My life would have been so different if my brother hadn’t provided me with an affordable, stable place to live,” she said.
Since then, she’s obtained her master’s degree and is a Class A residential builder. She’s a proud business owner in a male-dominated industry and the owner of One Way Construction.
“My grandfather and father had a construction business years ago called One Way Construction, where I took the name,” Leila explained. In honor of both her grandfather and brother, she helps others achieve their dreams of home ownership. Because of her past hardships, she approaches her business a bit differently and knows personally how life can change in an instant— for better or worse.
Recognizing the rising construction costs, she has explored financing options for customers with less-than-perfect credit or those needing financial assistance. Looking ahead, Leila

dreams of addressing homelessness through establishing a nonprofit.
“My biggest wish is to address homelessness. Realistically, I know I can’t end it,” she admitted. Her vision is to offer a leg up to those in need, helping them get back on their feet and providing the stability they need to rebuild their lives.
“I would love to start a nonprofit organization (NPO) to provide temporary housing to veterans, single parents, recovering addicts, and anyone who needs a boost while trying to get or stay on track,” she shared. Leila’s vision for her nonprofit is comprehensive, aiming to provide not just housing but also job training and resources to help individuals transition to permanent housing and stable employment.

Until that dream comes to fruition, Leila offers her talents elsewhere. Outside of work, Leila is passionate about reading and volunteering. She has a special connection with author Andrew Sweet, for whom she occasionally beta-reads.

“If you check out his books, you will find my name inside the cover of a few,” she noted proudly. Leila’s love for animals also shines through her volunteer work. She has fostered for local shelters and regularly helps out with One By One Death Row Dog Rescue. “I like to help people and animals,” Leila said simply, capturing her generous spirit. Leila’s ties to Virginia run deep, and she appreciates the state’s beauty. “I am also a huge fan of four seasons, although I could do without this humidity,” she admitted with a smile. One of her favorite pastimes is driving through backroads to see how areas have grown and changed over the years. “I’ve lived here my whole life,” she said, and her love for the community in Stafford and the greater Fredericksburg area is evident in her efforts to give back.
When she isn’t working or volunteering, Leila looks forward to her vacations—something that wasn’t possible when she struggled to make ends meet. She doesn’t take her time off for granted, and she looks forward to precious time and opportunities to reconnect with her grown sons and her husband.
Looking ahead, she is excited about an upcoming cruise with Zach. “I am very much looking forward to spending Mom and son time with him!” she exclaimed. Future vacations will be “wherever Erik is stationed,” she said.
“I very much look forward to those, she said. “I don’t care where we go; I just want to see him. I
haven’t seen him in over a year, which crushes my soul.”
Jeff likes to lift Leila’s spirits with a camping trip so they can be surrounded by nature. The couple also loves riding ATVs.
“When we have a little time, we go to Funland and ‘kill dinosaurs’ [play Jurassic Park],” Leila said. “We’ve long mastered the game, but still enjoy it.”
The two also love Texas Roadhouse and Pizza Hut, which hold dear memories for Leila and remind her of “hanging out after high school football games.”
Alpine Chef and the Four Seasons are also favorite spots for dinner and brunch if they can slow down and savor the weekends. They also love checking out local events and festivals in the area.
Leila’s household also includes three beloved dogs: Hank, a Cavapoo; Phoebe, a mini poodle; and Hershey, a toy poodle. There’s Shadow, affectionately known as Fat Fat, a fluffy cat who thinks he’s a dog. “Fat Fat followed Niko, our German shepherd who passed away last year, everywhere; that’s how he learned to act like a dog,” Leila explained. Each pet adds joy and warmth to their home, underscoring the loving and caring environment that Leila and her family have created.
Leila’s story is a testament to hard work and perseverance; she’s overcome various obstacles throughout her life, and she has her sights set on creating even more of a lasting impact in the

community with her future aspirations of establishing a nonprofit organization to help combat homelessness. Her story proves that someone can change their story with grit and determination, and she looks forward to assisting others to create their happy endings.

Firearms Trusts: Who Needs Them and Why?
Approximately one out of every three Americans own a firearm, with many owning more than one. Possessing such a heavily regulated item requires unique solutions for sharing, gifting, and transferring such property. Yet, many gun owners commit accidental felonies when trying to use and share their firearms. Gun trusts exist to prevent this, giving owners the freedom to use and share their property according to their wishes.
Navigating NFA Weapons:
The National Firearms Act of 1934 mandates specific requirements for weapons such as machine guns, short-barrel rifles, short-barrel shotguns, silencers, explosives, and any other weapons (AOWs). Such weapons must be registered, and owners must undergo background checks in addition to specific transfer and possession requirements.
Accidental felonies can occur when ‘constructive possession’ occurs with a non-registered person. If a roommate or family member has knowledge and ability to access a weapon, it is considered constructive possession. For instance, a spouse who is not a registered owner may be committing an ‘accidental felony’ along with the owner if they can access an NFA weapon. This could open them and the firearm owner to fines, penalties, and imprisonment if prosecuted.
Transfer of NFA weapons can also lead to accidental felonies. This includes selling, giving away, and even loaning the weapon. So, if a registered owner were to lend a silencer or other NFA-defined weapon to a friend, this friend would now be in felonious possession. By naming beneficiaries in a gun trust, this accidental felony can be avoided. Gun trusts still allow for recreational use

and enjoyment of such property now and help protect the owner’s interest and best wishes.
Why Are Gun Trusts Valuable?:
• Shared Access/Ownership: Gun trusts can allow beneficiaries listed in the trust to possess and use firearms. This creates ease of access for those in the trust and helps to prevent accidental felonies from occurring.
• Ease of Transfer: When beneficiaries are named in a gun trust, NFA firearms may be easily transferred according to the law.
• Probate Avoidance: The firearms in a gun trust pass directly to the named beneficiaries, so probate can be avoided, and the executor of the estate can avoid potential legal problems. Probate can also be expensive, so preparing for the transfer of firearms ahead of time can save money later.
Whether your firearms hold monetary or sentimental value, ensuring that they are transferred according to your best wishes can be accomplished through a gun trust. They allow owners to enjoy their firearms responsibly in their lifetime and ensure seamless transfer to future generations. By adhering to federal and state regulations, you can know that your firearms will be handled according to your wishes.
If you own NFA weapons, consider the protection provided by a gun trust. It can help preserve your legacy for future generations and give you the freedom to use and share your property responsibly according to the law. HB Law can provide uniquely tailored solutions, such as gun trusts for special assets like firearms, to best meet your needs.

August represents new beginnings and opportunities.

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader involved in the Rotary Club of Stafford and a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service Above Self.”
College Students
• Follow all social media the college or university offers that involves your student(s).
• Do the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This allows you to see their educational records. Google FERPA
• Check the tuition, room and board deadlines.
• Create a physical three ring binder/digital binder for the college years.
• Many colleges don’t guarantee 2nd year housing and the apartment and roommate hunt can begin as early as October of freshman year. Living Learning Communities (LLC) are also an option.
• Attend Family Weekends
• Attend career fairs and look for internships for next summer. Many corporations open their applications in the early fall and close in November and December.
• How does your student want to communicate with you and how often?
• What medical forms are recommended for college students like HIPPA and Medical Directives.
High School
Parents of college bound seniors, your students should be filling out the Common Application or specific college applications now. All high school students should consider the tips below:
• Do you have a professional presence on LinkedIn?
• Is your social media open or private? Colleges, businesses and the military will look at it. If there is any questionable material on it, take it down now. Go on college tours now even if your student isn’t interested. In person is best, but you can also do the virtual tours on the college websites. The information session provides clear expectations of what is needed to attend that college.
• Sign up for with counselors when colleges attend your high school
• Take the October Practice SAT (PSAT) every year. If your school doesn’t offer it, pay for it. It is $18 - $20.

• If you have taken Algebra 2, you are ready to take the SAT.
• Paid or Unpaid Internships in high school are important. It’s an opportunity for students to learn what they may or may not be interested in. It can save time and money.
• Attend tutoring
• Participate in clubs or create one.
• Show leadership in your classroom, on a sports/ academic team or be a part of the Leadership class or student government at your school?
• What is your student’s grade point average (GPA)?
• Create a 3 ring binder for your students to keep certificates, awards, acknowledgements received throughout their high school career.
Middle School
This is the time to shore up the gaps students may still have in preparation for high school. If your student is behind, it’s time to double down and help them. Ask the school counselor and specialists for tips. These years are challenging for students as they go through puberty. The goal is to have them at grade level in reading and math before 9th grade begins. If your student is at or above grade level, then the goal is for them to maintain that and not stagnate. I recommend looking at the high school tips above and a few tips below:
• Google Career Cluster Survey and have your student take it and answer it honestly. It correlates to Career Paths.
• 7th grade parents create a 5 year plan with the counselor.
• 8th grade parents create a 4 year plan and go on official and unofficial college tours. The College Fair in the Fall at the Spotsylvania Mall is a great opportunity.
• Take the PSAT
Elementary School
You are your child’s first teacher. Reading to your child on a regular basis before school begins helps create the love of reading and sets the foundation before elementary school starts. Do not underestimate the power and positive impact of reading. The goal is to make sure your student is on grade level in reading and math by the end of third grade.
• You, the teacher, the counselor and school administration are on the same team.
• Attend all parent-teacher conferences.
• Ask for copies of all or results from all assessments given for your student.
• Always be professional and communicate the positive and negative issues with the teacher first. If you aren’t satisfied with the results then move to the administration.
• The school specialists are also resources for families.
By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.

Comfort Paws, LLC, an integrative veterinary practice based in Stafford, Virginia, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for pets through a variety of specialized services. Founded by Dr. Katrina Spies, Comfort Paws offers pain management services such as acupuncture, rehabilitation, laser therapy, herbal medicine, quality of life assessments, hospice and palliative care, and food therapy. To ensure accessibility for all pet parents, the practice provides house calls, in-clinic, and telehealth appointments.
Dr. Katrina Spies has been an active member of the Northern Virginia veterinary community for over 15 years, primarily working as a small animal emergency veterinarian. Reflecting on her extensive experience, she shared, “While I found it rewarding to assist animals in emergent situations, I often felt limited in my ability to provide comprehensive, ongoing care and pain management for many senior or lame patients.” This realization sparked her journey into integrative medicine in 2020, leading to the creation of Comfort Paws.
Driven by a passion to enhance the well-being of pets, Dr. Spies pursued various certifications to broaden her expertise. She explained, “I earned certifications as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian (CHPV), Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinarian (CCRV), and Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA).” Additionally, she is working towards becoming a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP), Certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist (CVCH), and Certified Veterinary Food Therapist (CVFT). Her dedication to continuous learning underscores her commitment to providing individualized, integrative care.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Spies enjoys a fulfilling personal life in Stafford with her husband, two dogs, and a parrot. Originally from the Midwest, the Spies are avid fans of the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers. They love traveling, especially to sunny destinations.

Dr. Spies and her team at Comfort Paws are eager to become more involved in the community. She invites local businesses and organizations to reach out if they are interested in hosting talks or workshops to promote pet wellness and education. “Comfort Paws would love to become more involved in our community,” she emphasized.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit Comfort Paws’ website or contact them directly. Dr. Spies and her team look forward to serving the community and enhancing the lives of pets and their families.

At Comfort Paws, the philosophy is simple yet profound: “We believe pets have the right to live their best lives possible and to age gracefully, free from pain.” This mission is at the heart of their services, which aim to keep pets healthy longer, help them recover from injuries more quickly, and maintain their dignity and independence as they age.

Dr. Spies finds immense inspiration in the tangible improvements she sees in her patients’ lives. “My greatest inspiration comes from witnessing the significant improvements in my patients’ quality of life that can result from even small changes,” she said. She also takes great joy in educating pet owners on how to best support their furry friends, stating, “This personalized approach and client education allow me to make a meaningful impact on both the pets and their families.”
In an effort to foster community engagement, Dr. Spies encourages pet owners to explore integrative veterinary care. “Comfort Paws collaborates closely with your primary care veterinarian to provide complementary services that support comprehensive care for your pets,” she noted. By integrating various therapeutic approaches, the team at Comfort Paws aims to deliver the best possible outcomes for their patients.

And there’s no need to apologize for bad breath or gassy patients with Dr. Spies as she lost her sense of smell in a childhood accident: “I’m the last one to notice!” Dr. Spies laughed.

Helping Pets Thrive During the Back-to-School Transition
As families gear up for the new school year, it’s crucial to remember our furry companions who also feel the impact of changing routines. Our beloved dogs and cats experience stress during this transition, making it essential to consider their well-being alongside our own preparations.
Establish New Routines
Just like children, pets thrive on routine. Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, walks, playtime, and bedtime to provide stability and a sense of security. Predictability alleviates anxiety and smooths the transition to the new schedule.
Prioritize Exercise and Socialization
Regular exercise and social interaction are vital for physical and emotional health and preventing obesity and destructive behaviors. Dogs need daily walks and play sessions that stimulate their minds and bodies. When appropriate, consider arranging supervised playdates with other dogs.
Cats need physical activity, too! To satisfy their natural instincts, provide climbing structures, scratching posts, interactive toys, and activities that mimic hunting, like chasing laser pointers or feather toys. Some cats even enjoy supervised outdoor exploration on a harness and leash.

Create a Safe Haven
The hustle and bustle of the school year can overwhelm pets. Designate a quiet, comfortable space to retreat to when pets need solitude. Include favorite toys and a cozy bed, and use a pheromone diffuser, such as Feliway (cats) and Adaptil (dogs), to promote calmness and reduce anxiety. Secure trash bins and remove potential hazards to pet-proof the environment and prevent accidents or ingestion of harmful substances.
Stimulate Their Minds
Combat boredom by introducing stimulating activities that challenge problem-solving skills. Treat-dispensing toys and puzzle feeders keep pets engaged, especially when home alone. In your absence, play soothing music or an animal-themed show for auditory stimulation.
Healthy Eating and Hydration
Proper nutrition is fundamental for everyone’s health! Feed pets high-quality food appropriate for their age, size, and breed—ask your veterinarian for recommendations tailored to your pet’s specific needs. Avoid table scraps and toxic foods, like xylitol (artificial sweetener), chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, grapes, and onions. Be sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water to stay hydrated.
Schedule A Health Check-Up
An annual physical exam with your veterinarian, along with vaccinations, preventive care for parasites, and routine screenings, are crucial for preventing and detecting health issues early on. Discuss concerns

with your veterinarian and follow through with recommendations for maintaining your pet’s health.
As you prepare for the upcoming school year, remember to prioritize your pets’ needs as well. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can create a smooth transition and foster happiness and well-being throughout the year. Here’s to a successful school year for all members of your family— two- and four-legged alike!

BEAUTY IN OUR BACKYARD
It has been a little over two years since our family moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia. Fredericksburg is quite different from our hometown, with its hustle and proximity to our nation’s capital. Nicely situated in this new place we call home, our eyes have been opened to the many gems of nature and history embedded in our local community and nearby towns. Our family time explorations have led us to walks that made us feel like we should be in the midst of an enchanted forest with fairies, caverns of stalagmites and stalactites creating a scene that is a reminder of Lord of the Rings, and battlefields where soldiers stood and fought for what they believed in. What beauty, rich in creation and history, right in our backyard!
You may have lived in Virginia all of your life, or maybe you are a newcomer to the area, but you don’t have to wait any longer to take in its breathtaking beauty. Summertime sunrises and sunsets that display the splendor of heaven can be found in our local Shenandoah National Park. You can easily find the park and all the sunrise and sunset lookout points from the National Park App. Pack a breakfast, lunch, or dinner and enjoy the majesty of this local national park. You can also find hikes for every adventure seeker in the family. The app lists the hikes, severity, and estimated completion time, so any hiker-- novice or veteran can enjoy a plethora of wildlife. White-tailed deer, black bears, bobcats, squirrels, lizards, snakes, and turtles roam freely. Bird watchers love the landscape of the Blue Ridge, which has more than 190 birds to observe and enjoy. Stargazing is another activity that can be cherished with friends and family. The easy accessibility of Skyline Drive allows the stargazer to capture the luminescence of the moon, Milky Way, and clusters of constellations.

The mysterious Luray Caverns, conveniently located close to Shenandoah National Park, are a must-see. This fantastic site is the most extensive cavern system in the East, with a unique underground landscape that includes mirrored pools, mudflows, towering columns, stalagmites, and stalactites. The paved, lit paths make it easy to explore this deep underground landscape and stand in awe of the towering cathedral ceilings. With a pitch-black background, glittering rocks, and jolting earth, the Luray Caverns are a place where you can let your imagination run wild.
In our backyard, on four battlefields-- Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Court House, and The Wilderness-brothers fought against each other for their valued ideals. At any of these historic sites, your mind can drift from the serene, peaceful landscape and nature walks to the ferocious cannon booms and blood-stained battlefields. It’s a powerful reminder of how our nation was transformed forever. Enter our nation’s past and explore the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, which contains the four battlefields, historic buildings such as Jackson’s death site and Salem Church, and exhibits and tours. It is one of 400 national parks found on the NPS app.

A vacation to distant national parks may not be possible for the remaining summer weeks, but you can enjoy the fascinating sights in beautiful Virginia.

BUILDING A LOVE FOR READING
Reading is both an imperative skill to develop from a young age, and a skill that sparks imagination, creativity, and kindergarten readiness. Dolly Parton recognized the importance of reading for young children in 1995, when she first founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
The program began small, distributing only in Parton’s home county of East Tennessee, but the growth it has seen over the past 29 years is truly astonishing. To put the growth into perspective, the first shipment of books in 1995 totalled at 1,700 books, and today, the program sends out over a million books each month, ensuring that 1 of 7 kids in the United States, who are under the age of five, are able to receive a free book monthly. Further than this, the program has now been expanded to parts of the United Kingdom, Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Australia.
Concerning the growth of the branch distributing to Spotsylvania County, since its establishment in March of 2020, it has registered almost 3,000 children. Local affiliate, Elizabeth DiDonato, who largely believes that literature is the cornerstone for early childhood development says, “A child’s brain is 90% developed in the first 2,000 days of their life.” This emphasizes the importance of early literacy for children, both in their preparation for kindergarten, and the development of their love for reading that can last a lifetime.
DiDonato continues, saying, “A child’s development is an interactive process that is not predetermined. Brains are built, not born, and the early years last forever.”
This is where Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library comes into play. This program is in place to ensure that all children have access to books, no matter their family’s financial status, and to encourage an environment within the child’s home that is conducive to reading as a family activity. DiDonato says, “The program inspires a love of reading with books, free of charge, to families, through local community partnerships.” The program aims to provide hand-selected, age-appropriate picture books to as many children as possible each month, and this number is constantly growing.

DiDonato says she urges parents to register their young children for the program because of its many benefits. She points out that if a child registers at birth, by the time they age out of the program at 5 years old, they will have received 60 different, free books.
Additionally, the technique of mailing the books to the child’s homes builds anticipation, and as DiDonato says, “The Imagination Library’s home gifting model gets children excited about owning books and inspires shared family reading by getting books directly to children at home with their names on the label.”
DiDonato goes on to say, “The benefits include improved reading skills. For example, Virginia’s fourth graders’ reading scores dropped by ten points, the biggest decline in the nation. Studies also reveal that children who start kindergarten with a higher skill set generally experience fewer grade repetitions and higher post-secondary attendance compared with those who start with weaker skills. Higher education translates to lower unemployment and higher incomes.”
Overall, the importance of literature has been proven during early childhood, and in-turn the impact that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has is huge.
To conclude, DiDonato says, “The positive views of the program and its impacts are present regardless of the demographic characteristics of the community or its participants, and longer program participation results in more positive outcomes.”
If you, or anyone you know has a child under the age of five and would be interested in registering for the program you can sign up at https://imaginationlibrary.com or contact and affiliate at Imaginationlibrary@tabumc.org.

HEART-CENTERED ACADEMY:
CULTIVATING CONFIDENCE AND COMMUNITY

Established in 2023, Heart-Centered Academy has become more than just an educational institution; it has become synonymous with hope, offering support for students and their families. This faith-based, non-profit learning center, led by Executive Director Melissa Coleman, offers a unique blend of individualized and small-group support tailored to meet the diverse needs of children from elementary to high school.

“We offer services such as formal and informal testing, ADHD support, academic support, consultation, and advocacy,” Melissa explained. Heart-Centered Academy provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive.
“We are blessed to have providers come to Heart-Centered Academy to ensure our students’ needs are met.”
Melissa shared her journey and the philosophy that underpins the academy.
“In mid-August 2023, God called upon me to open my own facility after years of revamping and starting up different programs in various school systems,” Melissa recalled. “After sharing my testimony as a former special education teacher and a parent of a child with disabilities, the community came together and wanted to help get the building ready to accept students. Fast forward eight weeks from that day in August, we not only had a building to accept students but also opened our doors and welcomed students, their families, and our supporting providers.”
Heart-Centered Academy now has a speech pathologist, a clinical psychologist, and two therapy dogs who come to the academy and comprehensively support students’ needs. A key element of Heart-Centered Academy’s success is its emphasis on evidence-based teaching strategies tailored to each student’s unique learning needs. This individualized approach ensures that no two sessions are exactly alike.
“We teach students how they learn to ensure they can be independent and successful learners,” Melissa said, and further explained the academy’s philosophy: “We are committed to providing a positive, safe, faith-focused, and stimulating environment for children to learn, where all are valued. We intend that all children should have a love for learning, achieve their potential, and become independent life-long learners.”
The academy’s impact is palpable, with 16 regularly attending students and countless families benefiting from its consultation, advocacy, and testing services. Additionally, Heart-Centered Academy partnered with a local middle school last year, serving 102 students once a week for about eight to nine weeks.
“Our numbers continue to grow for our small yet mighty center,” Melissa proudly stated.
Melissa’s inspiration for her work stems from a deep-seated faith and a profound commitment to serving others.
“First and foremost, God is my inspiration,” she shared. “I am inspired by the families we serve and the community who have poured their hearts into us. I have seen the many sides of public and private school education. There is no perfect system, but I do believe that teachers are doing their best to meet the various needs of their students in large classroom sizes. Knowing the budget and resource challenges, Heart-Centered Academy supports not only families but also schools and their teachers.”
The joy and fulfillment Melissa derives from her work are evident in her energy and passion for the academy’s daily operations. “My enthusiasm for coming to work every day comes from seeing the success of our students, the boost in their confidence, and knowing that families have a safe place to turn to,” she said. Heart-Centered Academy is not just a place for academic growth but also a hub for community engagement and fun. The academy hosts monthly events for its students, such as stuffed animal sleepovers, camping nights, movie nights, an upcoming music night, and an end-of-summer kickoff celebration. “We invite talent from our community to make the events memorable,” Melissa mentioned.
One of the academy’s core philosophies is building confidence in its students. “Students who come to us know they are struggling and quietly seek acceptance and understanding—behavior is communication. Our students know we know how they learn, and it’s okay; in fact, it’s awesome,” Melissa emphasized. This supportive and affirming environment helps students flourish both academically and personally.
Her commitment to her family matches Melissa’s dedication to Heart-Centered Academy. She is a mother of two boys, Bradley (12) and Benny (10), and is supported by her amazing husband, John. Together, they enjoy farming, baseball, and spending time with friends.
Looking ahead, Heart-Centered Academy continues to seek ways to expand its reach and support within the community. Melissa encourages community members to visit the academy’s website at heartcenteredacademy.org for more information and to consider donating children’s books for their lending library. She also expressed her gratitude for the Fredericksburg community.
“It is a blessing— to say the least— as to how amazing our community is in supporting and uplifting one another.”
With help from the community, Heart-Centered Academy continues to thrive, making a lasting impact on its learners, fostering a love for learning, and building confidence in its students.

EMPOWERING MOTHERS THROUGH FITNESS: A SPOTLIGHT ON S.L.A.M. QUANTICO
Mommin’ ain’t easy. In the time of social media, where everyone has an opinion of what moms should be doing, how they should be parenting, and the constant barrage of unwanted criticism and critiques, it’s refreshing to find a supportive community of moms. That uplifting, fitness-focused group for many mothers, rookies and veterans alike, is Sweat Like a Mother (S.L.A.M.). Lyndsay Woods, a certified Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism Coach and an AFAA Group Fitness Instructor, owns and operates S.L.A.M. Quantico, finding her calling in combining her love for fitness and motherhood.
Founded in 2019, S.L.A.M. Quantico offers moms a unique and challenging total-body workout, but they also provide that elusive “village” that it takes to raise children. Lyndsay’s mission extends beyond a workout group; it’s about providing support for their members, who they fondly call their SLAMily.
“Our overarching mission is to bring women together not only as moms, but also as athletes who show their children that their bodies are the greatest

instruments they will ever own,” explained Woods, who began her S.L.A.M. journey in August 2021, when her family moved to Stafford. All of their classes are stroller-friendly, so moms can bring their tiniest offspring along to get a good sweat in without the worry, stress, and financial hardship of arranging childcare.
“We provide moms with a community of support to [not only] empower them through their fitness journey, but also through motherhood. We are so much more than ‘just a mom workout group,’” she added. “With our weekly playgroups, monthly book club and Mom’s Night Out events, family days, field trips, and charity work, we strive to create a modern-day village for our members.”
The supportive community allows moms to prioritize self-love and fitness, and they are encouraged to “come as they are” because “ALL mothers are athletes!” she emphasized. The group has become a “game-changer” for many, offering physical benefits, increased confidence, and a supportive community.

More than the physical benefits of working out, Sarah mentioned the “increased confidence” and community relationships: “These are the women I lean on. We are all different, but there is no judgment. The workouts are meant to meet us where we are, and we are all there to support and motivate one another,” she said, adding she’s also thankful to be a part of “this amazing group and for the friendships my daughter is creating as well.”
Morgan agreed, “For me, S.L.A.M. is that little bit of self-love that I show myself every week! Being a mom is the best job I could have ever dreamed of, but unlike other jobs, you never clock out, and it’s down right HARD! Finding S.L.A.M. early on in my postpartum journey was a godsend.” She credits the group with helping her make that time “to better myself, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.”
The variety of classes, themed events, and community engagement keep each day exciting and fun. Beyond that, others mentioned the benefits of additional relationships and friends, as Courtney explained:
“I found S.L.A.M. during a season in my life when I was struggling with loneliness and acceptance. As an adult, it is harder to find and maintain relationships. When I did the trial classes for S.L.A.M., I was immediately accepted into this amazing group and treated like a treasured friend. Everyone welcomed me into the group with open arms, and now I could not imagine my life without this wonderful group of friends.”

Celebrating Their 4 Year Anniversary
And that’s exactly what Lyndsay envisioned. Now, as a veteran spouse residing in Fredericksburg with two young sons, a husband, and a dog, Lyndsay finds solace, balance, and an outlet through S.L.A.M. through this season of her life, and she hopes the group will do the same for you.
If you’re looking for a great group of friends with the added benefit of a whole-body workout, check out S.L.A.M. Quantico, or follow them on Facebook page (@slamquantico), Instagram page (@s.l.a.m.quantico), or website (www.sweatlikeamother.com/Quantico) for more information. Lyndsay emphasized that you

Members are always supporting each other. “do not have to be affiliated with the military to join us!” They have members with and without military affiliations who live as far north as Woodbridge and south as Spotsylvania. She added that the classes are “created for ALL fitness levels, including the pregnant and postpartum population,” but everyone– mother or not– is welcome to join for a free trial, too. Classes are currently held at Loriella Park in Fredericksburg and Embrey Mill Park in Stafford. Join the SLAMily and experience the power of fitness, support, and camaraderie for yourself.
