Q: Is spring really the best time for pruning and planting trees, or can fall be a good time too?
Patrick Wade: While many people associate tree care with spring, fall is actually an optimal time for pruning and planting trees in many parts of the country, including Virginia. The fall temperatures here are relatively mild, and the soil remains soft and warm enough for trees to take root quickly. Plus, the intense heat and sun of summer that tend to dry out the soil have subsided by then..
Q: What makes fall a particularly good time for planting new trees?
Patrick Wade: Planting in the fall gives new trees an extra growing season before they have to deal with the stresses of summer. Some worry that new trees might not survive the winter, but that’s a misconception. Trees go dormant in the winter, which actually slows down their energy consumption, allowing them to conserve resources. It’s also a great time to fertilize trees with fall and winter products to enrich the soil during the dormant season.
Q: What should homeowners consider when it comes to tree removal or trimming in the fall?
Patrick Wade: Fall is an excellent time to remove any large trees that look alarming or to trim dead limbs. It’s crucial to address these issues before winter storms hit, which can cause weakened or dead branches to fall and potentially
damage property. Regular maintenance and trimming help ensure that trees stay healthy and safe throughout the year.
Q: Can you tell us more about ArborTech Tree & Landscaping Service and what sets your company apart?
Patrick Wade: ArborTech Tree & Landscaping Service is based in Richardsville, Virginia, and we’re dedicated to excellence in both tree and landscaping services. We cater to clients in Stafford, offering a wide range of services including tree removals, pruning and trimming, hazardous removals, land and lot clearing, storm cleanup, and more. We hold several credentials, including BBB accreditation with an A+ rating, ISA certification, and membership in the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA).
Q: How do you prefer to communicate with clients, and why?
Patrick Wade: I prefer phone calls over other forms of leads because they offer direct communication with clients. This allows me to understand their needs better and schedule appointments right away. The recording feature of phone calls is also incredibly useful, as I can revisit conversations to make sure I didn’t miss any important details.

Marie King, the driving force behind Lok Custom, Lok Fashion Academy, and Lok Fashion Institute, is a name synonymous with fashion and education in the Stafford area. As a fashion designer, owner, and founder of these thriving ventures, Marie has devoted her life to empowering others through her unwavering dedication to style and nurturing new talent.
Marie’s unwavering commitment to her craft and the education of others is evident in everything she does. “I wanted to create a space where creativity could flourish, where people could learn and grow in this industry I love,” she said, describing the mission behind her fashion academy and institute.
At the heart of her educational endeavors is the Lok Fashion Institute and Academy, which prepares students for a career in fashion by providing them with a dynamic and immersive experience. “We give students a fun experience with authentic learning and project-based activities,” Marie shared. The Institute and Academy foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and independent learning while maintaining a solid career focus and an international perspective. Marie emphasized the importance of inclusiveness and community within the academy, noting, “We want our students to feel like they are part of something bigger, where they can express themselves freely and grow personally and professionally.”
Marie’s own journey in fashion was fostered by her mother, another fashion designer.
“I can’t remember when I wasn’t sewing,” Marie said, her love for design palpable. Growing up in the Caribbean, Marie made all her clothes and even dolls as a young girl. Her love for design has been a constant, a passion that has driven her to excel in her field. Her educational background is as rich as her career, with years of study in fashion design, internships that honed her skills, and experiences that shaped her unique perspective.
Marie has called Stafford home now for over 30 years, but she has a storied history of living in various places and being immersed in various cultures. She first came to the States at age 16 with her mother, calling New York home. Her love for fashion blossomed there, and she took a more formal approach. Like her mother, she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and immediately found work in the renowned Garment District of New York. She worked for Maharaja Designs, living in New Delhi, India, for five years, where she met her former husband, who was in embassy detail at the time, and returned to New York as a project manager. As project manager, she worked closely with FIT graduates, fostering their love of design and fashion and helping them launch into their careers in the fashion industry.
Soon after, Marie was launched into life as a military spouse, marrying a Marine and uprooting her life in New York to move to Camp Lejeune.
“I didn’t work when we moved to Camp Lejeune,” she recalled, “because nothing there paid me what I was worth.” Finding work– especially meaningful work– and maintaining one’s own high-paying career is a struggle that any military spouse can relate to, and Marie was no different. She decided to immerse herself in hobbies and volunteering and get acclimated to her new life.
“Being a military wife, wherever you are, you make it home,” Marie explained. She did just that: playing tennis, riding horses, volunteering for Navy Relief, and– of course– still sewing. Friends caught on, and it was then that Marie decided to launch her first business. When she moved to the Quantico area, she launched her umbrella of Lok businesses. Her now-grown son, Khal, still lives in the area, so she has some local family, but many of her clients and former students have also earned that title.
It’s not uncommon for Marie to design a wedding dress for a former student and join in the fun at the wedding celebration years after their graduation from Lok Academy. She enjoys watching her students grow up and still serves as a mentor to many. She’ll proudly share stories of her past students as the walls of her design studio are adorned with their runway photographs and showcases of their unique, custom designs.
What she enjoys most about living in the area is the sense of community and the connections she has formed. “I enjoy meeting people at work and socially,” she remarked, underscoring her outgoing nature and deep love for her community.
Marie’s interests extend far beyond her professional life. She has a deep love for the culinary arts, theater, and travel. Her appreciation for good food is matched by her love of the arts, mainly theater– she’ll find any excuse to take in a show at Riverside or head north to Broadway– and her desire to explore the world.
“I enjoy experiencing the culinary scene in our area,” she shared, listing New Orleans Bistro, Sky Bar, and Zibibbo 73 among her favorite local spots. Her adventurous spirit and global perspective are evident in her travels to the Eastern Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, and West Africa and in her designs as well.
“Traveling opens your eyes to new influences and different colors,” Marie explained. “You design and adapt as you go.” Marie loves adapting old patterns and designs and making them her own. “If you want a run-of-the-mill thing, go to the store,” Marie said. “When you know your subject matter, you can change and create something new and exciting–when you don’t, you must go by the book, which becomes boring.”
Boring isn’t in Marie’s vocabulary. She loves creating custom designs and unleashing her creativity. For example, she’s currently making a tailor-made suit for a Black Santa Claus; evidence of her travels is woven into the design.
When she’s not working, mentoring young designers, or traveling, Marie enjoys the area’s natural beauty, mainly the walking trail on Government Island. “The walking trail on Government Island gives you an appreciation for nature,” she noted.
Marie King is not just a fashion designer; she is a community figure, a mentor, and a woman of varied interests and deep connections to her surroundings. She’s woven her story of passion and creativity into the heart of her businesses and the community she’s created here in Stafford– and we can’t wait to see what she designs next!

Parents and Teachers, what an incredible role we have! As we emerge into the 2024-2025 school year, may we focus on one of life’s most important callings: mentoring the youth in our paths. Our mission field is the youth in our community, on our school campuses, and around our dinner tables. There is no greater way to impact our future. Here are some tangible ways to mentor:
Share knowledge and experiences.
Everyone is a teacher. We all have truths from life, trade, education, and trials to impart. However, mentoring is more than just sharing what we know; it is about inspiring change. It uses what we have and allows others to use it as a springboard to go further.
Model what is expected of others.
A good mentor will always display the character, patterns, and behavior of what is expected in those they lead. A mentor is not perfect, but even in failures, good mentors display how to recover, correct, and try again. Good mentors are servant leaders. They display the ability to both follow and lead. Youth flourish when they serve or participate alongside someone they admire, whether a coach, teacher, parent, or older sibling. The mentor’s goal is always to be a better example to those who follow.
Verbalize that you care and show it. One of the most valuable gifts we can give another is encouragement. Former President Theodore Roosevelt stated, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Love and genuine care are the optimal climate for growth. Praise improvements, not perfection. Express your desire for growth and what is best for your mentees. Speaking truth into the lives of youth and mentioning strengths will lift any weary soul. Our young people are in dire need of this today.
Give your time.
Nothing says that you care more than T.I.M.E. Time is one of life’s most valuable and limited resources. It demands prioritization and careful thought of its investment. Our youth probably need our time more than anything else. They need time for us to listen, not just to their words but to their hearts. Giving this precious gift shows love and respect.
Launch into this school year as a mentor, giving our youth hope and significance. Share your knowledge, good example, time, and encouragement. Our future depends on it!
The time you’ve been planning for is now.

Effective communication is crucial for ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned regarding your student(s). This principle applies across K-12 levels, college, and for students seeking opportunities such as internships for the upcoming summer or sooner.
As parents and guardians, we often assume we have ample time, only to find ourselves scrambling, playing catch-up, and doing damage control. Drawing from my experiences with my four sons, here are some valuable tips I’ve learned:
K-12 families
• Look at the school calendar and mark all of the grading periods for the year on your personal and family calendars.
• Request a conference with your student’s teacher at the first grading period and ask for a copy of any benchmarks/assessments from the beginning of the school year.
• If your student is struggling, do the following:
º Ask if the reading or math specialists/department heads can help.
º Does the teacher provide tutoring before or after school?
º Is there help during the school day?
º Look for free online resources or look for a tutor for your student. It’s better to invest and address the gaps early.
Higher Education Families
• Ask your students if they need help and the dates of their upcoming midterm exams.
• Encourage your students to attend professor’s office hours and tutoring provided by the college or university.
• Take note of the drop and withdrawal dates for classes.
• Protect the grade point average.
• Encourage your students to find a study group and to use the library.
• Have your students set up an appointment with the advisor to review their courses and their current and four year plan to ensure they are on track.
• Attend Career Fairs in the Fall. Bring your resume and look professional.
College Applicants
• Know the due dates for college applications.
• Finish the Common Application essay and/or the colleges specific essays.
• Ask for letters of recommendations, if you’ve not already done so and make sure they get uploaded to your high school’s platform.
• Make an appointment with your counselor to make sure you aren’t missing anything, and to find out what the process is for requesting transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. Your counselor is your best friend in this process.
• Keep your grades up. No slacking at all this year. Colleges look poorly on it.
• Tour the top five colleges - In person is best, but virtual is also available.
Internships
• Summer 2025 applications are open for many large corporations. Some deadlines have already passed for 2025, like Google. I saw a deadline of July 21, 2024 for some summer 2025 internships. Some of the banking industry companies hire two years ahead. Yes, some will hire for summer 2026.
• Many summer 2025 acceptances are given in November and December. This allows for all background checks and other processes the company does for employment.
• Look at local companies and small businesses that offer internships and have partnerships with your local high schools and colleges.
• Check your social media and ensure there is nothing on it that will ruin the opportunity to get an internship.
• Update your LinkedIn page and resume. If you don’t have one, then create one today.
There is something so special in the early leaves drifting from the trees - as if we are all to be allowed a chance to peel, to refresh, to start again.

Life can be stressful. Whether you’re working, retired, or somewhere in between, everyone faces challenges such as deadlines, financial issues, and difficult relationships. These stressors can take a toll on our well-being, making it essential to find ways to reduce stress and enhance our quality of life. One often-overlooked solution is the power of outdoor living spaces.
At Artscapes, we understand the impact that thoughtfully designed outdoor areas can have on your life. Our mission is to create spaces that not only beautify your property but also contribute to your mental and physical well-being. Research supports the idea that being outdoors has significant health benefits, and we’re here to help you harness those benefits right at home.
Numerous studies highlight the positive effects of spending time outdoors. Research shows that people who spend time outside are generally happier, less stressed, and more content. For example, a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research found that spending just 20 minutes a day in an outdoor space improves overall well-being, even without physical activity. Beyond mental health, being close to nature also offers physical health benefits, such as reducing the risk of Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and even premature death. In short, being outside is good for you, both mentally and physically.
The benefits of outdoor living extend beyond simply being in nature. Our modern lives are predominantly spent indoors, where we are exposed to artificial environments that may harbor allergens like dust and mildew. These factors can lead to health issues such as low energy or mild headaches. Being outside offers a respite from indoor allergens and the monotonous routine of indoor living. Outdoor environments offer fresh air, sunlight, and the opportunity to experience nature in its purest form. The sensation of a breeze on your skin or the warmth of the sun can rejuvenate the spirit and provide a much-needed break from the confines of climate-controlled spaces.
While parks and forests are wonderful, having a personal outdoor space at home can offer you the benefits of nature daily. At Artscapes, we specialize in designing outdoor living rooms that inspire you to spend more time outside. Whether it’s for yoga,
meditation, dining with friends, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee, these spaces encourage you to relax and connect with nature.
Our designs aim to harmonize with the natural landscape, creating spaces that are both functional and beautiful. We believe that connecting with nature is the “antidote to tech overload,” offering a retreat from the constant buzz of technology and a chance to unwind and recharge.
If you’re inspired to create your own outdoor living area, here are some ideas to consider:
• Add a Fire Pit or Fireplace: Create a cozy gathering spot for family and friends to enjoy year-round.
• Build a Patio: Enjoy dining, lounging, or soaking in a hot tub on a well-designed patio. Incorporate seasonal container gardens for added beauty.
• Incorporate Native Plants: Enhance your space with native flowers and shrubs that attract butterflies and birds, adding to the enjoyment of your outdoor time.
• Ensure a Well-Maintained Property: Maintain an open space for yoga, meditation, or other activities.
• Create Walkways and Steps: Make your property easily navigable with pathways that encourage exploration.
Designing and building an outdoor living space is an exciting endeavor, but it’s crucial to choose the right company for the job. At Artscapes, we recognize that every property and homeowner is unique, and we’re committed to creating custom spaces that meet your specific needs.
We’ll work closely with you to understand how you envision using your space, whether it’s for hobbies, relaxation, or family gatherings. Our goal is to enhance the natural beauty of your property while providing you with a space that brings joy and relaxation to your life.
Let’s Get Started
Are you ready to transform your Virginia home with a stunning outdoor living area? At Artscapes, we’re eager to help you create a space that enhances your life and allows you to enjoy the outdoors to the fullest. Contact us today to discuss your project and begin planning the outdoor living space of your dreams. We can’t wait to see how your new space will enrich your life.

Home improvement begins in the mind. It is the culmination of hopes and dreams. Home improvement anticipates change that will bring happiness, value, and identity. What is the blueprint for choosing the companies to dream with you and make those dreams come true? Like a floor plan on a blueprint, a company’s core values help lay out key components. Core values identify which attributes a family, institution, or business possesses. Choosing companies for your home improvement investment that align with your core values is essential. You will see these ideals carried out in the craft, communication, and customer service you receive during your project. At NK Floors, we hold these core values to the highest standard. Let me explain why we believe they are crucial to our customers and homeowners by listing our core values as a flooring company and applying them to home improvement.
NK Floors is committed to offering quality in the flooring products and services we provide. Our company partners with leading flooring manufacturers to offer our customers top-quality products. For a home improvement, quality matters if you are looking for window replacement, fresh interior paint with accent walls, a kitchen renovation, or an upgrade to your lighting. What is the quality of the products you are purchasing and having installed? If you are hiring a company to do the home improvement, are they certified and trained in their expertise? Trades must take ownership of their knowledge and craftsmanship. Our company offers installer certifications and classes. What about the companies you will hire? Are they top-quality? Home improvements can add value to your home, so choose carefully.
2. Integrity
NK Floors team members are expected to be honest and dependable. Our team strives to have a reputation where our actions match our words. Our goal is to do it right the first time. When considering different companies for home improvement, check their reputability and reviews. Get referrals. No company is perfect, but the consensus should be that they are honest and dependable, and most people are satisfied with their prices, products, and results.
3. Superior Work Ethic
NK Floors team members are expected to put their best effort into every aspect of their work. Superior skills, effective procedures, and continuous improvement are foundational to our company. There is a process for each project in your home. Adequate procedures in construction and renovation ensure a lasting home improvement. The plan for the home upgrade should accompany
momentum from start to finish. Following through on the job allows the project to be completed promptly, tidily, and organized.
4. Effective Communication
NK Floors strives to be direct and timely in communicating with customers and is mindful of concerns. Our goal is to understand and carry out the needs of our clients. You will conduct several vital conversations before any contractor or interior designer enters your home. Are they listening to your ideas while imparting their knowledge, or are they just pushing to make a sale? Are they listening to concerns about products and installation? Customer satisfaction and communication must be prioritized before, during, and after the home renovation.
NK Floor team members strive to interact with positive attitudes and respectful demeanors. Any home improvement project can be stressful. When communicating with the business entrusted to beautify your castle, they must remain respectful and act on the customer’s behalf. Be sure to communicate suitable times to be in the home and how to maneuver around pets and other family members during the project.
6. Flexibility
NK Floors is prepared to adapt and make changes when necessary. We are ready to innovate and excel to increase our efficiency and productivity. Life happens, and our team is prepared to accommodate you when it does. Variables in home improvement include schedules, weather, finances, permits, product availability, colors, design choices, etc.… When obstacles arise, qualified companies will think critically to find a solution. Be sure your team of experienced home improvement companies can tailor to all that may come your way during your renovation.
NK Floors adheres to these core values to offer our customers next-level, precision flooring. Floors for every walk of life can only be laid when we follow these ideals in quality, integrity, superior work ethic, effective communication, respect, and flexibility. Clarify your core values for your next home renovation and use them as a blueprint to find the products and companies you seek to help you create your dream home.

WHAT’S KOMBUCHA ANYWAY?
Kombucha is a tangy, effervescent fermented tea that’s been around for over 2,000 years. This ancient elixir is packed with probiotics, antioxidants, and a delightful
zing that’ll have your taste buds dancing. Plus, it’s super customizable, so you can craft a brew that’s uniquely yours.
Step 1: Gather Your Gear
1. TEA (BLACK OR GREEN): The base of our brew.
2. SUGAR: Food for the fermentation magic.
3. SCOBY (SYMBIOTIC CULTURE OF BACTERIA AND YEAST): The star of the show.
4. STARTER TEA: Pre-made kombucha to kickstart fermentation.
5. A BIG GLASS JAR: Our fermentation station.
6. A CLOTH AND RUBBER BAND: Cover the jar and let it breathe.
7. BOTTLES WITH TIGHT-SEALING LIDS: For the second fermentation and fizz.
Step 2: Brew the Tea
Boil 4 cups of water, then add 4-5 bags of black or green tea. Steep for 5-10 minutes, then remove the tea bags. Stir in 1 cup of sugar until it dissolves. Now, let it cool to room temperature — nobody wants to scald their SCOBY!
Step 3: The SCOBY Show
Pour your cooled tea into the glass jar, then add 4 cups of water. Gently place your SCOBY into the tea. It might float, sink, or do a little dance — all perfectly normal! Add 1 cup of starter tea, cover the jar with the cloth, and secure it with the rubber band. Now, let it sit in a warm, dark spot for 7-14 days. This is where the magic happens!
Step 4: Taste Test Time
After about a week, start tasting your kombucha daily. When it’s just the right balance of sweet and tangy, it’s time to bottle up! Remove the SCOBY and 1 cup of kombucha to use as your starter tea for the next batch.
Step 5: Get Fizzy with It

With the 2024-25 Mountain View Football season on the horizon, the Wildcats have been working tirelessly since the end of their 2023-24 season. The team has been putting in countless hours in the “Lab” and isn’t shying away from hard work or hot days!
From lifting sessions to fieldwork and team bonding activities, the Wildcats are gearing up to dominate the competition. Rising senior and starting wide receiver Tyler Tanks shared his perspective on balancing fun during the summer with staying focused on football.
“I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t playing football; it holds major significance in my life,” he said.
“When you become so deeply committed to something, the desire to excel becomes crucial, even if it means sacrificing other things you enjoy.”
The team has participated in numerous “Seven on Seven” football games throughout the summer. These games are a preparatory tool that helps gauge progress from the previous season. “Seven on Seven” is an American-style football format played with seven players on each team, typically without offensive or defensive linemen. The game focuses on passing, catching, and defending the pass, which helps improve timing, route running, and defensive coverage strategies in a more controlled environment.
Rising senior and cornerback Elias Hines emphasized work ethic during pre-season activities.
“It’s important to give it your all during the workouts and seven on sevens in summer,” he said. “These help you as an overall player and help you fix things you should be working on so that when the season is here, you are at your best.”
Summer workouts are vital in mentally, physically, and strategically preparing players for the season. The foundation laid during these summer sessions contributes significantly to the team’s overall success and individual player development. The Wildcats are ready to carry this momentum into the 2024-25 season and showcase the results of their hard work.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a timely reminder to learn how to recognize pain in our pets. Dogs and cats can’t tell us when they’re in pain, and their natural instinct to hide discomfort makes it even harder to detect. As pet parents, it’s up to us to notice the subtle clues they give us so we can get them help quickly.
Pain can arise from surgeries, dental disease, ear and skin infections, trauma, osteoarthritis, and even emotional stress. It generally comes in two forms: acute and chronic. Acute pain is sudden and often easier to spot, while chronic pain develops over time and is frequently mistaken for aging or “slowing down.” Therefore, it’s crucial to watch for subtle signs that may indicate your pet is in pain.
One of the first indicators of pain is a change in behavior. Has your playful dog become less active, or is your usually social cat hiding more? These shifts could signal that something isn’t right. Painful dogs and cats may withdraw, lose interest in play, or show signs of anxiety or aggression.
Pain can also alter your pet’s daily habits. A dog that eagerly eats might avoid going downstairs to the food bowl, or a cat might start avoiding the litter box. Sleep patterns can change, too—your pet might sleep more than usual or struggle to get comfortable at night.
For more tips and tools to spot pain, check out the following resources:
• The Feline Grimace Scale: felinegrimacescale.com
• Zoetis Petcare’s OA Checklist: zoetispetcare.com/checklist/osteoarthritis-checklist
• The Feline Musculoskeletal Pain Index (FMPI): painfreecats.org
• International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM): ivapm.org/caregiver-resources
Physical symptoms are another clue. Is your dog limping or struggling to rise after resting? Has your cat stopped jumping onto their favorite perch? Stiffness, difficulty posturing to use the bathroom, or a hunched back can all point to pain. Even facial expressions can change in cats—flattened ears, squinted eyes, or odd whisker positioning might indicate discomfort. The Feline Grimace Scale app can help you spot these signs.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of chronic pain in pets, affecting even younger animals. This progressive joint disease causes inflammation and pain, making movement difficult. Early detection is key to managing OA, and tools like Zoetis Petcare’s OA Checklist for dogs and The Feline Musculoskeletal Pain Index for cats can help you recognize signs of this condition.
If you think your pet might be in pain, don’t wait—reach out to your vet! A thorough exam and imaging can pinpoint the cause. Early recognition allows you and your vet to create a treatment plan, whether through medication, acupuncture, physical therapy, or dietary changes. Addressing pain early can prevent it from becoming a chronic, debilitating issue.
Your pet is counting on you to notice the signs of pain and get them the help they need!

Loisann’s Hope House, located in the heart of Fredericksburg, Virginia, stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and community support for families experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1987 by a group of concerned citizens, the organization has grown from its humble beginnings to become the region’s largest family homeless shelter, helping countless families regain stability and self-sufficiency over the years.
At the heart of Loisann’s Hope House is a deep commitment to transforming lives.
“Hope House has taken a lead role in the community providing vital support to children and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless,” explained board member Keith Lebor. “While our primary focus is on families needing immediate assistance, our Homeless Helpline often serves as the first point of contact for anyone in need.” Through the helpline, Loisann’s Hope House is able to guide most callers to the appropriate resources for their specific situations, ensuring they have access to services in the region.
“For those who fall within our core mission,” Lebor continued, “we offer direct support, including immediate intervention to prevent homelessness and providing temporary crisis housing and life skills training.”
The organization’s mission is to quickly move children and their families from homelessness to housing by providing a comprehensive range of services designed to address the root causes of homelessness. This mission is underpinned by a belief in the dignity of every individual and a dedication to providing a hand-up, not just a handout.
“Our mission is to break the cycle of homelessness, one family at a time,” said Lebor, who has been an active board member for almost three years and has donated to the organization personally for over six years and through his business, Olde Towne Butcher, for over a decade.
“After learning of the amazing work Hope House was doing for the community, I dug in a little further and was amazed at how successful it is,” he explained. “For example, families exiting the program have a 94% success rate in maintaining their own housing after two years.”
“Being charitable is important,” Lebor emphasized, “but knowing your contributions are having such an incredible impact really lets you know it is worthwhile.”
Over the years, Loisann’s Hope House has developed a holistic approach to addressing homelessness, understanding that securing housing is just one part of the equation. The organization offers a variety of supportive services, including case management, financial literacy education, job training, and mental health support. These services are tailored to meet the unique needs of each family, helping them to build the skills and resources they need to maintain stable housing and achieve long-term independence.
The organization maintains its commitment to its guiding principles: everyone deserves hope; relentless commitment to family; tough love without judgment; education for independence; and accountability with care. Community involvement is integral to the success of Loisann’s Hope House. The organization thrives on the generosity and support of local businesses, faith groups, and individual volunteers who contribute their time, resources, and expertise to help families in need. This strong network of community partners enables Loisann’s Hope House to offer a wide range of services and to extend its impact far beyond what would be possible on its own.
“My passion in contributing to Hope House is derived directly from life experiences,” explained Lebor. “I believe everyone has experienced, or knows someone who has experienced, difficulty at some point in their lives. Whether those difficulties are due to bad decision making or uncontrollable circumstances, often just a leg up is all that is needed to get them back on a productive path. Providing that little bit of help offers families the confidence and, eventually, the self-esteem needed to provide for their families.”
In addition to providing direct services to families, Loisann’s Hope House is also an advocate for systemic change. The organization works to raise awareness about the issue of family homelessness and to advocate for policies that promote affordable housing and economic opportunity. Through these efforts, Loisann’s Hope House seeks not only to address the immediate needs of homeless families but also to contribute to long-term solutions that prevent homelessness from occurring in the first place.
The impact of Loisann’s Hope House is evident in the stories of the families it serves. Many families who come to the shelter are able to rebuild their lives, secure stable housing, and move forward with hope and confidence.
Four high school graduates are moving forward with hope and confidence onto college campuses this fall.
“One student is set to attend her dream school, the HBCU Virginia State University, with aspirations to study psychology,” Lebor explained. “Another plans to pursue biomedical engineering at Germanna Community College, aspiring to specialize in prosthetics. A third student aims to enter the field of criminal justice, also at Germanna. Lastly, a young woman will attend Radford University on a full scholarship, pursuing a degree in Education with dreams of becoming a teacher.”
The organization’s success is measured not just in the number of families housed but in the lasting change it creates in the lives of those it serves. Nevertheless, the numbers are still impressive. In fiscal year 2023, Hope House fielded nearly 16,000 helpline calls, secured permanent housing for 121 family units, and assisted nearly 300 children.
Loisann’s Hope House is more than just a shelter; it is a community of care, compassion, and empowerment. Through its dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters, the organization continues to make a profound difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness, offering them the support they need to overcome adversity and build brighter futures.
